President's MESSAGE Hello Monsters! It's that time of year again: ELECTION SEASON! If you're interested in running for a position, I highly suggest that you prepare well for the officer test and the elections. There is often more to being an officer than what meets the eye. I'm not trying to scare any of you off from running or anything, but being an officer is a lot of responsibility. There will be times when you want to bang your head on the wall because of stress, maybe bawl your eyes out or run around wildly; however, there are also so many positive aspects to being an officer. I hope that you all consider trying out for a position because you never know what the job can bring you. Preparing for elections has made me realize that my term as president will soon draw to an end. Being Franklin Key Club's president has truly been an amazing experience. While I grew as a leader and as a person, the club grew right along with me. I am extremely proud of my members and humbled that I have had this opportunity to serve you all. I am also especially thankful for my wonderful executive board who has been with me this past year and has always given me support. I began my journey as an officer, carrying on my past officers' legacies. Now, I have come close to the end of my term and I have nearly finished creating my own legacy. Regardless, I hope that you all will make an impact in Key Club, not necessarily as an executive officer, but maybe as a member or an appointed officer. The options are endless. I wish you all luck for the 2015-2016 Key Club year! In Service and Friendship, Sharon Hsu

Challenge: Come to our elections to help us decide the officers for the 2015-2016 term!
Education | The Election Process Elections aren't just a time to listen to a few Key Club officer candidates talk about their passion. This is a KEY moment for you, a member, to ensure that the next year's board is fully qualified to serve you. What are the positions people can run for? President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Bulletin Editor What exactly is this process? A week after the officer workshop, there is an officer test that candidates must pass to run for an office of the Key Club board. Any Key Club in good standing (dues paid and preferably with 50 hours), regardless of experience, may run. Elections are held a week after the test; they are currently set for 1/26 and 1/27 in HK-4. What happens on election day? First, each candidate gives a speech. Then, a time is set afterward for caucus questions. What is the dress code for elections? Candidates must dress in business casual, but members may dress in casual attire. What kind of caucus questions should I ask? At the beginning of the year, I found an article written by Christina Xiao, a former Elections Committee Chair. Here are her general pieces of advice: ● Try to keep a limit of one “fun” caucus question ● Ask the same question to all candidates (ideally the same position) ● Be specific ● Ask questions that are pertinent to you If you wish for more specificity, please visit this link: "Caucusing: What to Ask" For more ideas, please see: Sample Questions from our CyberKey website

Education | Questions and Answers
About Dues As of December 4, 2014, we have 170 dues-paid members, a 10% decrease from the 2013-2014 term. To end the term without a decrease, we need at least 20 more dues-paid members. Can you help us meet that goal? What is the procedure for paying dues? Follow the instructions on the Membership Form, which may be accessed via http://franklinkeyclub.freehostia.com/index.php. Is it too late to pay dues? The on-time deadline for dues has passed. However, it isn't too late to become a registered member of Franklin Key Club. If you haven't already, pay your dues so the secretary, Andrew Yu, can sign off your hours! (Preferably by January 26) I thought providing community service is free. Why should I pay dues? By paying dues, you open opportunities for yourself and the Key Club organization at all levels. For a general breakdown: Club - $3.50
District - $4.50
International - $7.00
Field trip costs (Fall Rally North and District Convention)
Administrative & Office and Board Budget
Membership Card & Pin (one time only)
Recognition Awards
Key Leader Scholarship

Key Club Magazine International Convention Recognition Awards

Member of the Month
Left: Jess Fernandez; a sample of his best photos from Santa Run and Winter Wonderland are to the right
Hey Key Clubbers! How do you feel… that Jess “Bobby” Fernandez is January’s Member of the Month? Happy? Delighted? Ecstatic? Good. As a freshman, Jess already has a goal to reach 400 hours by the end of high school and volunteering through Franklin Key Club helps him with that. When he has free time outside of volunteering for Key Club, Jess enjoys biking, video games, and skateboarding. But even when he would rather bike or skateboard, Jess decides to volunteer anyway because “Key Club is a great place to congregate with friends and earn community service hours as well as help organize events.” This is only Jess’s first year in Key Club and he is already actively serving his community. He can be seen snapping photos throughout the service events he attends because he likes to capture the moments during key club events. In December, he took photos at the Ugly Sweater Run, the Winter Wonderland, and the Santa Run. Thank you for giving the Key Club members memories of several service events and I hope Key Club has reciprocated the favor by giving you memories of your own. You and your actions are very commendable and congratulations for being January’s Member of the Month! Continue on your spark of dedication! -Lesley Wong

The Noon Year's Eve (12/31) event at the Crocker Museum was probably one of my favorite events to volunteer at. I helped with Tot Land, which was basically playing with children the whole time, but the other jobs, such as way finding or the arts and crafts seemed pretty cool too! Besides the jobs, it was fun because the Volunteer Coordinators were generous and kind, and even let you roam around the place to look at the art on your break. It was just an overall really great experience and I would definitely volunteer there again! -Sunshine Hurtienne

Past Events (continued) The Santa Run The Santa Run (12/20) was an interesting event, especially since it was at the State Capitol. It was really fun to see all (well at least 98%) of the runners in Santa costumes. I really liked how the run ended at Macy's. I also liked the live music. Overall, it was a cool experience. -Hannah Her Above: Key Clubbers hand out water to runners at the Santa Run. (Courtesy of Jess Fernandez)
Weekend Meal Ministry The Weekend Meal Ministry (12/21) was really fun. I enjoyed cutting foods up as well as serving them to people. The thanks that I received from some was so heartfelt it made me happy. I also saw a teacher from our school there and that was a pretty surreal and cool experience! -Eileen Eto
