The Ultimate Buddha Bowl This Buddha Bowl Harvest board epitomises everything I love most about food. Central to almost all sensory food is vibrancy, texture and flavour. What makes food even more memorable is the simple act of sharing plates and this board is built for sharing. I call it joyful food. It nourishes, feeds and restores. There’s no one single definitive Buddha bowl recipe. It’s more of a gathering place for loads of vegetables, if you will. Think of it as a fridge clean out. Roast, chop, slice and dice until you’re completely excited by what you see. Quinoa, beans, chickpeas, nuts and seeds are pantry staples in my kitchen, but feel free to replace the quinoa with bulgur wheat or couscous if that’s what you have in yours.

A proudly South African Product

I’m a coffee lover who also drinks tea, and visiting Carmién Tea has been on my list for a while. During a recent visit to Citrusdal, we decided to pop in. Carmién Tea is one of those products that make you proud to be South African. I’ll get to that part soon, but let’s start off with the tea itself. First, the packaging is incredible! You know exactly what you’re going to get, with each box carefully designed to represent what’s inside. They offer a huge range of teas for different tastes or reasons. Do you want to be more relaxed, refreshed, delighted, focused, energised, or cleansed? Don’t worry, there’s a tea for that! We were fortunate enough to taste four varieties during our visit. We tried the Green rooibos, fennel and aniseed (soothe), Masala chai with turmeric (focus), Mint and watermelon-strawberry (summerfresh), and the Red mocha. Warren was a fan of the red mocha, while I loved the watermelon, and I’m now on a mission to try all the fruity ones. They have also introduced a kids’ and babies range, as well as a range of mamma teas (including woman’s support, morning and nursing). They have a great selection for gift ideas, including double-wall tea glasses, cast iron and glass teapots, wooden boxes with a variety of tea favours, and gift sets. The tea, however, is not the only thing that makes this company so special. Carmién Tea is on a mission to provide sustainable jobs and broad based wealth creation for their farm workers as an independent marketing company. The workers own 50% of the exclusive production & packing facility – Bergendal Rooibos, thereby encouraging community development. I was blown away by their work ethics, and only wish other companies could adopt this policy. Having a school/crèche on site means that the workers are assured safety for their children while at work. They also love getting the children involved, as you can see from their recent recycle project launch. Here, the children were asked to make cards from recycled material. The cards were then sent with every purchase from their online store. The project was a great way to bring their consumers closer to the Carmién Tea farming community. It also gave the kids an opportunity to develop their creativity, as well as showing them how to eliminate waste through recycling. This is a family-run business, so a lot of love goes into the day-to-day running of the farm. They’re committed to keeping their company safe and healthy to both the customer and the environment. I am up around 7am and hit the gym at 8 - 9am then return for green tea and the start of my day in the office. I have a massive diary and long long to do list that I love ticking off as I complete tasks. I do a lot of strategy, planning and development on a day to day. Being in the kitchen is a treat but has been neglected in 2017, so there is a lot more cooking planned for 2018.

Take me through a typical food day for you: What is in store for 2018? For dinner I am out most evenings, but at least twice a week I’ll cook chicken curry and soup. I also am addicted to pizza so I try get my fix at least once a week.

Bilboa Restaurant

Last night was one of the windiest nights we've had in a while, so it was good to stay indoors. What better place for us to experience the weather, than Bilboa Restaurant in Camps Bay, where we enjoyed a beautiful and safe view of the beach. I sipped my sparkling wine and laughed at the crazy people out on the beach trying to get a good photo without getting blown away. I was happier to stay inside, thank you very much. Bilboa Restaurant is in a perfect location, right in the heart of Camps Bay, and because it's upstairs you get one of those 'this is why I live in Cape Town' views. Bilboa is a new addition to the area, open only for a few weeks when we arrived, and I was impressed at how busy the place was, as well as how many good reviews I'd already heard. The staff were incredible, and our friendly waiter, Elvis, took us through the menu - explaining how the meals could be enjoyed two ways: the chef's way, or the customer's way. I, of course, went the chef's way - I figure the kitchen staff knew a bit more about food than I do. After ordering a glass of sparkling wine for me, and a glass of the Chocolate Block wine for

Warren, we looked through the menu. I chose the Asparagus Hummus starter, which came with feta, cumin, tahini and flat bread, and Warren chose the Moroccan Beef Kofka with coriander, garlic, yoghurt and pine nuts. Both great, but I am such a huge fan of hummus that mine stood out the most for me. Also, I make it all the time and mine does not come out as well as. Show me your secrets, Bilboa. For our mains, we once again went with their specialties, rather than create our own. I chose the Kingklip, with pine nuts, pistachios, parsley & spinach puree. Warren, chose the Red Drum Sea Bass, with clams, olives, tomato, garlic & thyme. I don't often go for fish as a main, but I'm so glad I did, and I will choose this over and over again when I return. The show stopper of the night was definitely the dessert - Baked Chocolate, with salted hazelnuts, Kahlua Jelly, & coffee ice cream. I can't pick a fault with this restaurant. The decor is great, the view incredible, the staff so friendly, and the food delicious. It's hard to find a place that gets every single element right, but for me Bilboa did just that. I'm always impressed with people that get me to love a piece of fish. That doesn't often happen for me. Welcome to the hood, Bilboa. create Who makes up your team now and where are you based?

The team is made up of Tara (Owner, boss lady and marketing manager), Calvin (Also kind of the owner and lead web developer), 2 kids (Cole and Daniel), 3 dogs (Bear, Nala and Vader), a Cat (VonD) and a Snake (Ivy). We are currently based in Hilton, in the KZN midlands, but most of our clients are from the Western Cape ... Maybe it's a sign?

create What was your favourite project of 2017? Well, we only started in 2017 ... but if we had to choose one (really hard, there have been so many awesome ones) our favorite project so far would be Blackmeerkat Gin... The name pretty much says it all but it was also a really fun build. Also, we loved the style of the brand which made our job really easy.

Do you remember the first project you ever worked on? Yea, we decided to sponsor a few sites in the begining to build a portfolio for ourselves. My Tiny Teepee, and The Ezemvelo Honorary Airwing were among the first few we ever built as Wild Heart.

What, in your opinion, are the three most important aspects of a website. In this day and age, especially with CMSs (Content Management Systems) taking over the internet, we think that security is by far the most important aspect of a website, followed by SEO and Mobile responsiveness. We offer all of the above as a standard with all of our website packages.

Tell me more about the name, Wild Heart Design. We love South Africa, and have a huge heart for helping out up and coming businesses. We obviously also love design, and wanted our brand to portray this. We spent quite a bit of time coming up with a name and, when we thought of Wild Heart Design, it just stuck!

Are you coffee drinkers? How many cups do your team drink a day? Tara is a coffee drinker, but then how many mothers of two aren't? She probably does two or three a day. Calvin spent seven years at a digital marketing agency where coffee was on the menu every twenty minutes which now gives him the jitters and he has since become a rooibos man.

We chat to the beautiful Katharina Barth... the woman behind one of my favourite jewellery ranges: Katmeleon Jewellery Take me back... where did it all begin? It all began when I decided to take up Jewellery as one of my subjects at school. I then chose to study Jewellery Design and Manufacture at CPUT and just loved it. I have never looked back since.

How has your company changed since its conception? My style of Jewellery has changed a lot. It’s part of the learning process. You soon find that balance between your style and the customer’s. I first started with my Colour Pencil Range and then moved on to a more nature inspired range.

Tell me a bit more about your products and where can we find them/order them? My jewellery has several ranges. I like to use Sterling Silver, Brass and Copper. There are different styles that have appealed to a variety of different tastes. My jewellery has a very natural feel about it and at the same time very straight and precise lines. I sell once a month, usually the first weekend, at Made In The Cape Artisan

Take me through your creative process. My inspiration for my pieces comes from various things. A lot comes from my vast plant collection at home and then also from various cultures and countries I have visited. When I feel inspired by something I am immediately trying to make it in a metal form in my head. One of my favourite ranges is the Cactus Range. That was inspired by my great love for Cacti and the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. Once I have a design in mind I then play with the metal to get it to do what I want.

Do you remember the first piece you sold? What is your most popular product at the moment? My first piece I sold must have been one of my university pieces. It was to an ex-lecturer. My most popular items would be the Delicious Monster Range, Circle Hoops and Hexa Hoops.

I see you've added mugs to your range - tell me more about the other products you offer beside jewellery. I started with my watercolour drawings that were such a hit, I thought that having them on mugs would be amazing. I might look into making tshirts and possibly note books. I always wanted to study Fine Art and now I get to make jewellery and draw. What a dream come true.

When you're not designing, what are you doing?

When I am not designing I am either manufacturing my jewellery or busy taking Instagram photos. I have always loved photography and enjoy capturing the moment. I also have a great love for clothes and am always on the hunt for something different and unique.

Any exciting plans for 2018? 2018 will definitely be the launch of my website and then new ranges. I have finally found my groove and feel some new designs coming on. I can’t say what type of range, you will just have to wait and see.

If we were to find you at a coffee shop, where would it be and what would you be having? Seattle Coffee Shop, nestled under their warm Copper lighting, with a tall cappuccino sprinkled with cinnamon.

If you’re ambitious and love to smash your goals on Monday like a girl boss, like I used to, this is going to change your work life, I promise. I’ve only started doing this recently and it’s made a HUGE difference to what I get done during the week.

Piekenierskloof Mountain Resort Nestled high in the Cederberg, is Piekenierskloof Mountain Resort. It’s one of those places where you instantly feel relaxed. It has an air of serenity that wraps around you, like a blanket on a cold winter’s night. I had to constantly remind myself that I was there to take photos, but if I wasn’t doing a review I’d more than likely have forgotten about my phone. The resort is situated a few kilometers before Citrusdal, and only two hours from Cape Town. It overlooks the beautiful Olifants River Valley, so wherever you look you’re blessed with breathtaking views. As they say, ‘Location! Location! Location!’ – this place definitely has it all. We stayed in one of the hotel rooms, with views overlooking the mountain. The 4-star accommodation offers three different room types: honeymoon suites, deluxe double (sleeps 2), and family suites (sleeps 4). The rooms are spacious, with everything you need for a short stay. By far the best thing about the room was the bed. I don’t often sleep well when I’m not at home, but I had one of the best night’s sleep at the hotel. It also didn’t harm that we woke to the sound of much needed rain. If you’re in a bigger group or you’re looking for a longer stay, then I recommend booking into one of the chalets instead. We were lucky enough to visit one of the empty ones, and I am already making plans with friends to come back. The chalets sleep six and include a fully-fitted kitchen, a wood burning fireplace, and an undercover, built-in braai. The rates are fantastic, and the views are even better! This is a place that’s all about the details, and I was pleased to discover that two of the chalets are wheel-chair friendly. For the food lovers, like me, there is a great restaurant to visit on site. Kloof restaurant has a beautiful mountain view, and a great selection of food and beverages. They’re open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and I can highly recommend their pizzas. We had the chilli, bacon and feta, and the biltong, avo, feta and olive pizza. Want to relax even more? There is both an outdoor and indoor pool. The indoor pool is heated and has recently been revamped, and a trip to the Wellness Centre is great if you’re looking for some extra ‘me’ time. activities on offer. There is a children’s playground, a games room, outdoor chess, mini-golf, and bird watching. For the more adventurous, they offer zip lining, target shooting, hiking, and mountain bike trails. Due to the rain, we were unable to do the zip lining, but that just means we’ll have to come back (and I’m certainly okay with that!). It sounds fantastic. If you’re interested in trying it, but you’re still a little bit scared, then you can try the three course zip line instead of the seven. Although something tells me you’ll want to do more as soon as you give it a try. Luckily, we had good weather on the day we arrived so we were able to do a bit of hiking. They have two trails to choose from, and it’s a great place to get some good views over the mountain range. An afternoon of hiking followed by an evening of pizza? Yeah, I could get used to that. There are some places I enjoy but forget easily, and there are some that I go to and immediately begin making plans to return. They also have a great caravan and camping site, offering a beautiful swimming pool and even better views. The showers and toilets are on site, and with a shop and restaurant down the road, there’s everything you need at your fingertips.

We arrived at Kardoesie on a cold and rainy day. We didn’t mind though, the rain was needed and it forced us to relax. With no chance of any outdoor activities, we headed to the restaurant for cover. Warren tried their pepper steak pie, while I went for the chicken, peppadew and feta tramezzini. Both were delicious (and big), and it’s easy to see why this is such a popular stop for lunch. Attached to the restaurant is a small shop, as well as the Mengelmoes Boutique (where you’ll find leather products, jewellery, imported clothing, sunglasses, and books).

Kardoesie is not trying to be something it’s not. It’s not pretentious or fancy, and there’s something so wonderful about that simplicity.
