Renault Pro+ at CV Show 2018 *French CV Brand on the up globally

I

n marking the twentieth occasion that Renault has exhibited at the Commercial Vehicle Show, Adam Wood, Marketing Director, Renault Pro+ UK & Ireland outlined the brand’s simple and clear vision – to become world LCV leader. “During the Renault ‘Driving Change 2011-2016’ programme, volumes increased by 40% with a 48% increase in market share in general. Market coverage extended by 24% with great success in South America in particular.” Under the latest ‘Drive the Future 2017-2022’ programme, an ambitious 40% sales growth target has been set. Key areas of concentration will be through collaborations and sales partnerships in Russia and particularly China, where Renault has joined forces with Brilliance Auto, one of the biggest automotive manufacturers in the country. Adam cited two key innovations that were created by Renault – the remote control central locking and the mass production of electric powered cars and light commercials. Now that Mitsubishi Motors has joined the Renault-Nissan Alliance, over 2.5m unit sales are achievable globally.

Steve Wilson, Renault Pro+ Product Range Manager, highlighted the thirteen products on stand at the three day NEC event, including a number of exhibits from approved conversion partners. Sortimo, for instance, is the appointed racking system supplier. Recent additions to the product line-up that were on display were the latest Kangoo Z.E. 33 with 200 km range distance in real life operation. Due this autumn is the new Renault Master Z.E. with its 120 km range. Among the specialist conversions included are various body applications such as tipper, dropside, box, lo-loader and fridge, with the latter supplied from the end of the van production line at Batilly plant in France. The Wellhouse Leisure built Lunar Camper Renault Trafic Esterela also drew huge attention. “Electric power is the future for vans, but with Renault Pro+, it is here and now,” claimed Steve.

LDV lays foundations for future growth with new models due

F

uture plans announced by LDV distributor, The Harris Group, at the CV Show 2018 pave a bright future for the Chinese LCV brand on these shores and beyond. Market penetration continues across Europe with new dealers established in the Netherlands, Malta and Cyprus, with The Harris Group looking after sales and marketing in the latter two islands. There have been positive happenings in the UK with the electric version of the V80 van, as retail giant IKEA recently took delivery of two EV80s with its 200km range distance, while major fleet operator Royal Mail is currently trialling a similar version which was displayed on its stand at the NEC. According to Brand Manager, Mark Barrett , the company is firmly focused on the future of greener motoring with impending plans to launch a plug-in hybrid, hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell propelled CV. New products are set to enter the marketplace with the Next Generation V80 due next year along with the SV63 light commercial range due then also. “The new vehicle will have increased payloads (1.3-2.5 tonnes) and lower ground clearance. An all-new D20 Euro 6 engine with torque levels up to 400 Nm and models up to 5-tonne GVW, the SV63 will incorporate innovative design, intelligent safety features, a smooth driving experience and environmentally friendly as standard,” he said. FLEETVAN&UTILITY | Summer 2018

Mark is just as enthusiastic about the pending arrival of the all-new LDV T60 Pick-up, the fi rst Chinese model to receive top crash safety ratings. “Look out also for the D90 SUV that will come with seven seats and incredible high spec, along with a host of safety technology.” “Having re-established the LDV brand and laid the foundations for future growth with a fantastic dealer network, fi nance offers, warranty and after-sales service, we are now in a great position to announce some really exciting developments for LDV over the next two years,” concluded Mark.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles achieves record sales and profitability

S

trong sales demand throughout2017andinto 2018 sees Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (VWCV) build on its record turnover and profitability. Not adversely affected by the car division’s ‘Dieselgate’ scandal within the Volkswagen Group, VWCV is in the process of designing and developing leaner and greener light commercials set for introduction into the market place inside the next three years. Dr Eckhard Scholz, Head of VWCV highlighted details of the past year’s performances with overall sales up 4% almost reaching the magical 500,000 units (shy by just 2,000). “Turnover increased by 7% to €11.9b while profit rose by 87.6% to €853m,” he said. “The key pillar is the continuous success of the multi-award winning Transporter 6 in all its forms, from van to passenger carrier to camper vans.” He admitted that it was from the

in Germany in September, where the I.D. BUZZ concept van will take centre stage.

passenger types, including Combi, Shuttle, Caravelle, Panorama and California, that the significant proportion of profits are obtained. Dr. Scholz mentioned the challenges ahead led by industry trends, customer demands and forthcoming legislation. “Therefore”, he admitted, “we must bear in mind and include various elements in the design and development of new products such as Connectivity, Electrification, Autonomous driving, shared mobility and of course e-commerce. More details from this special briefing at the VWCV HQ in Hannover will be released leading up to the IAA CV Show, Hannover

*Latest figures for April 2018 reveal that global markets for VWCV products increased by 16.2%. Demand across Europe as well as South America, Africa and Asia-Pacific regions all contributed to the significant increase. In relation to the product line, the new Crafter performed best with a 35.4% increase in sales (4,600 units) while the Transporter remains the bread-winner with 22,000 unit sales almost 30% up over the same period last year. Take-up on the Amarok Pickup is increasing by 11.1% (6,100), while business for the Caddy range has slowed down by 3.1% (13,500 units vs. 13,900 units), mainly due to its ageing profile and intense competition from other brands with fresher models.

Ten Mercedes-Benz Vitos for Hertz Ireland

S

et for its Dublin Airport depot, Hertz Ireland has made a significant investment in expanding its fleet of MercedesBenz Commercial Vehicles with the recent addition of ten new Vito Tourer PRO 8-seater vans. Delivered in an assortment of colours, the new units have been supplied on a six-month contract hire basis. According to Eamonn Boland, Managing Director at Hertz Ireland, the new vehicles will be “primarily used to facilitate increased rental demands as the Summer period approaches.”

Each 7+1 seater vehicle is equipped with Easy-Entry function to enable comfortable access to the second seat row. Other features include comfort suspension, automatic transmission, heated power exterior mirrors, multifunction steering wheel with trip computer and Audio 15 infotainment system. Described by Mercedes-Benz as an ‘astonishingly versatile, mid-capacity

van’, standard safety features on all Vito Tourer models include Attention Assist to monitor the driver’s condition and Crosswind Assist to eliminate the effects of wind gusts. Tyre pressure monitoring is also standard, so too are twin driver and passenger airbags.

6 | INTERVIEW

One-to-One with Volker Mornhinweg, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans Jarlath Sweeney, Group Editor at Fleet Transport and Chairman of the International Van of the Year Jury caught up with Volker Mornhinweg at the recent Geneva Motor Show to talk about the new X-Class Pick-up, which recently joined the Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicle family. JS As other brands within the Pickup segment are now downsizing their engines, (similarly, as have some van manufacturers) what is the reasoning behind the introduction of the new 3.0 litre V6 on the new X-Class? VM Indeed, there is a trend for downsizing for sure and this can be done with new turbocharging technology to bring the capacity down. You have more or less the same kind of performance. With the V6, torque levels are higher at lower speeds with greater towing capacity, backed by a rock solid engine. It’s also meeting customers’ requirements and expectations from the brand. Some are looking to step into the segment and we have built up a premium-like car with good performance for them. In countries like Australia, they cannot live without the 6-cylinder. Also in South America and in Europe, we have high demands too. JS In entering this new marketplace will there be some crossover between leisure type customers and the business user, considering that the Mercedes-Benz van customer will now have the X-Class within its scope? VM What we have achieved with the V-Class (from the Vito family) can be replicated here in that we have achieved a totally different level of interest and customer demand. X-Class is a dualpurpose vehicle combining business and pleasure. Perfect as a second car in the family. FLEETVAN&UTILITY | Summer 2018

JS Relating to lifestyle and your past position as head of AMG, the performance division at Daimler, do you envisage higher performance versions to come? VM I would like to say that you will be the fi rst to know! For now, we have the X-Class with at least three engines (220d/250d from the 2.3 litre diesel and the 3.0 V6). Then we will have lots of additional parts; this is because there’s something special with our product as well as having a large range of accessories available. First of all, all our focus for the whole organisation is to understand what we are selling, educate and develop our sales teams, as it’s a totally new product for them. Coming up with a more performanceorientated version is something that we have not decided yet, but as a company, we will always have the opportunity to react later on and fulfi l these demands if they come up. JS What about North America - is there an opportunity for your CV dealers there to sell the X-Class? VM At fi rst glance we thought it might be a good idea, but after researching the market, mid-sized Pick-up sales have decreased tremendously in recent years in the United States. At the moment we do not see the market coming up in the premium segment, so therefore we are in a ‘wait and see’ position. If the market catches up to former levels and rising, we will react.

JS At the initial launch of the X-Class, there were two concepts premiered, highlighting two distinct versions for two marketplaces as we thought. This plan has changed subsequently, why? VM During the development phase, we had lots of discussion about this and talked about our experience and success of the V-Class and Vito in our mid-sized van offering. In the end, we decided to go and produce the one model as the price parc between a workhorse type and a premium product would be too much and our customers would not appreciate this. With the two concepts the idea was to show that we could do both, but it’s a question of demand fi nally, as maybe around 70% of customers will never drive off-road or on the Outbacks. JS How about an electric version of the X-Class like eVito and eSprinter from your new van family? VM Maybe in some areas or cities it may be feasible, but think about the main markets – on one hand they do not have sufficient charging infrastructure and secondly, these cars drive larger distances. From a general perspective I do not see a worldwide demand for an eX-Class as the main markets are more in rural areas and not developed enough with battery charging infrastructure.

MS-RT Road Technology: Adding passion to performance

H

idden within the scenic valleys of South Wales is a growing, relatively new startup company that is gaining strength in terms of reputation and sales customising Ford Commercial Vehicles. But what happens at Mamhilad Park Estate near Pontypool under the MS-RT banner is no bespoke customisation on behalf of clients. The high quality conversion is undertaken by Van-Sport under the auspices of Malcolm Wilson’s M-Sport Rally Car preparation teams and Ford Europe. Within two and half years from setup, the progress made at MS-RT Road Technology is noteworthy, as over 1,200 examples of their work on the Ford Transit and Tourneo Custom have been built, with additional creations on the Ford Transit

Connect and Ford Ranger Pick-up. Collaboration with Wellhouse Leisure, the campervan conversion specialist in Huddersfield run by David Elliot, recently sold to Lunar Campers, produces special editions of MS-RT Terrier based on the Ford Transit Tourneo Custom.

GT3 Racing, the rally stages run in our veins,” explained Ed from the MS-RT showroom at his Sunnyvale home base, where two examples of the MS-RT Ford Transit Custom flanked M-Sport’s Ford Fiesta WRC driven by Sébastien Ogier, five time World Rally Champion and reigning title holder with M-Sport Ford.

Company founders Edward Davies (who has 20 years of experience in the van conversion business) and Andrew Wheatley from M-Sport initially came up with the concept to develop and build these special vehicles. “We fuse tough and reliable Ford Commercial Vehicles with a sporting edge. Each one is created by hand. All at an affordable price. With over 20 years of motorsport experience behind us, including the World Rally Championship, Global Rallycross and

Not to be confused with Ford’s Sports Van versions, the MS-RT vehicles are positioned above these editions. All of the parts and embellishments are made and installed in-house in the facility which once was an ICI nylon spinning fabric factory dating back to 1945, and at its peak employed 5,000 people. Behind the red brick walls over 40 employees undertake the transformation job. (Derelict sections of the antiquated building make for stand out backdrops for photographs).

“We believe in dedication, quality and never following the pack. We bring together some of the most experienced designers, advanced production techniques and skilled craftsmen in our workshop. We assemble our customised vehicles especially for our clients – upgrading interiors, remodelling external features and creating the ultimate in unique commercial vehicles,” added Ed. Intricate work in making the new body kit was demonstrated by staff members during the factory visit, with Joe Pace, MSRT’s Development Director as our tour guide. He explained about the sections where the moulding takes place which had a strong ‘smell of science’ about it. Bumpers, wheel arches and other side panels are precisely manufactured, with a secret liquid material injected into the shaped steel pressing boxes in order to eliminate any air bubbles forming. To produce the new style front bumper, eight pieces of mould are put together. Trimmings squeezed out of the pressing boxes are then recycled. Th is process helps owners to minimise replacement parts after a pride-hurting incident. After several coatings of paint the kit is fitted to

the stripped out vehicle. As seventy-five percent of MS-RT Transit Custom sales are for the Crew Cab version, the bulkhead behind the two front seats is replaced with a new more curved one moved back to the rear of the new three-person race type bench seat with its special themed trimmings and stitching. The front seats get the same high quality treatment. Other modifications include the fitt ing of a new steering wheel and new blue toned M-Sport illumination on the dash dials, and other areas. Additional work is done on the suspension, brakes and exhaust system. Most customers specify the 170 PS version of the 2.0 litre TDCi diesel available on the Transit Custom range. Th is can be raised to 208 PS if specified, but this is carried out by M-Sport, under license. On the narrow, twisty and hilly roads around the majestical Brecon Beacons, the MS-RT Ford Transit Custom drove like a dream. Sure-footed and powerful. Many envious eyes were directed towards us as we motored along the challenging route, surrounded by the beautiful peaks, sunshine appearing in between the early summer showers.

MS-RT Pressings Text & Photos: Jarlath Sweeney – editor@fleet.ie

During the day we were chauffeured from the factory to the showroom on a specially commissioned Official Guy Martin Proper Customised Ford Transit 2-tonne, number 14 from 500 Limited Editions. In the factory we caught a glimpse of a rather special homage to multi-MotoGP Champion Valentino Rossi on a Transit Tourneo Custom, with its bright yellow 46 livery, dedicated fitt ingly to ‘The Doctor’. With authorised converters appointed in Norway, South Africa and Australia, further expansion is planned with Europe a priority. But the right partner has to be found for these oversea markets explained Ed and this may be done by fabricating the parts in-house and sending over to agents in a finished state ready for assembly from the specially packed shipping boxes. In preparation for this to happen, a second shift can be implemented to further enhance local employment and the local community in general. Currently Desmond’s Transit Centre in Derry is MS-RT’s Northern Irish dealer and a suitable appointment for the Republic is being worked on.

The new international campaign, which will be on air from May in major countries across the EMEA Region on TV, digital, radio and posters, plays on the topic of contrasts by showing plausible situations which could be easily and safely solved by the vehicles from the Fiat Professional line-up. 14 | LONG TERM TEST REPORT

Ford Transit Tourneo Custom 310 LWB Limited The Tourneo Custom’s smart technology is appreciated in that each journey is made safer and smoother. Fitted to the 130PS 2.0 litre TDCi EcoBlue 6 diesel is Ford’s new six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission with hill start assist. Combied with stop/start system, it helps to reduce fuel consumption. The Driver Alert programme constantly monitors driving behaviour and is designed to detect any changes that could be caused by fatigue. If the system identifies that the driver’s concentration is weakening, a warning icon appears in the dash display, suggesting that a break is needed. If ignored, the message is repeated and an audible warning is raised.

P

art of the Ford Transit Custom family, the Tourneo is the passenger carrier version of Ford Europe’s mid-sized, front wheel drive panel van produced in Turkey since 2012.

Up to 9 people can be carried with large luggage space behind the third set of seats. It is this flexible seat arrangement that is the Tourneo’s forte. Thirty different seating arrangements can be made. For example, when you’re not using the rear sets of seats, you can simply roll them forward. Alternatively, if a passenger needs a table, you can fold down any of the seat backs to make a flat surface. For maximum storage and luggage space, all of the seats can be taken out altogether. We haven’t gone that far on our 8-seat Tourneo Limited version, as we fi nd that folding the two sets of seats forward proves quite adequate for our load/delivery needs. Suitably placed load securing hooks have also been found to be useful on occasion. Feedback from passengers is very good as they fi nd the leather clad seats comfortable, particularly with the options of reclining seat backs and arm rests. There are also ISOfi x mounting points for children’s seats too. We are getting to know and utilise Ford SYNC system better now as it allows us to engage music, make and receive calls on mobile phones, using simple direct commands. Voice commands can also call up songs from a USB or MP3/iPod system, or stream music from a Bluetooth compatible phone. The system even reads incoming texts aloud. When it comes to storage areas, Tourneo is tops, with open and concealed compartments for iPods, etc., an extra glove box and of course, a number of drinks holders.

16,000 kms on, and another enhancement is the night driving aid provided by the Auto High Beam, which automatically dips the headlamps on approaching traffic or a vehicle ahead, while the rain-sensing wipers spring into action when needed. Over half way into our year long test with the Transit Tourneo Custom, our admiration is getting stronger and stronger. Having experienced the 170 PS version in South Wales recently, the 130 PS specified on this vehicle is perfectly adequate, with plenty of pace and torque (at 385 Nm) to match our needs. Again, its superb driving position must be mentioned as it’s the best in the business with excellent all-round visibility. We’ve got used to the needs of the thirsty AdBlue tank, a good refi ll every 10,000 kms or so will quell the irritating warning alarms for a while. In these advanced Euro 6 engine emission control days, it’s par for the course for light commercials as it has been in trucks and buses for well over a decade. A flexible friend with versatility added is a good handle to put on this Ford Tourneo Custom. Th is version is in no way ‘Limited’ as the spec provided brings it up and beyond most standard cars. Iveco’s Three-Pronged Eco-Assault gathers momentum

T

here’s hardly a van manufacturer out there that doesn’t claim to have a vehicle to meet every need. However, Iveco can arguably make such a claim with more authority than most. Like any of its rivals, the Daily is available in a multiple of versions of varying lengths, heights and payload capacities. However, where it stands apart is in the choice of fuel choices available. When it comes to clean and alternative means of propulsion, Iveco leads the way through its Blue Power range of clean diesel, electric and natural gas powered light commercial vehicles. The Daily celebrates its 40th birthday this year, the fi rst model having rolled off the production lines as long ago as 1978. A fitt ing place therefore to launch the new Blue Power range in the UK and Ireland while marking the significant milestone in the Daily’s history was Goodwood House in West Sussex in southern England. The stately home of the Duke of Richmond, Goodwood is an evocative name for followers of speedsters on four wheels and four legs, hosting the Goodwood Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival events for motor racing enthusiasts, while for equine fans, Glorious Goodwood festival is one of the highlights of the British flat racing calendar. Since last year, parent company CNH Industrial, through its Iveco, New Holland AG and CASE Construction brands, has become an official supplier to the estate. Th ree fridge‐bodied Dailys are used to transport milk and fresh meat to suppliers from what is one of the largest organic farms in Europe, while Iveco also supplies a Tourys Minibus for transporting guests around the estate.

FLEETVAN&UTILITY | Summer 2018

Blue Power - three choices for a sustainable future As Martin Flach, Iveco’s Alternative Fuels Director, described it, the Blue Power range of products is about looking to a sustainable future. “Increasingly, customers are looking seriously at lowemission LCVs. And with more and more cities bringing in low emission zones and ultra-low emission zones, Iveco’s Daily Blue Power range is the fi rst of its kind to offer three choices that anticipate these changes.” Visually Daily Blue Power vehicles are distinguished from regular Dailys by the blue trim around the grille and light surrounds, while inside there is blue stitching around the steering wheel and gear lever. Blue wheels are an optional extra. Daily Hi-Matic Natural Power That three-pronged assault starts with the Daily Hi-Matic Natural Power (NP). While the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered vehicle has been around for a few years, it’s now offered with Iveco’s well regarded, ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox, the fi rst CNG-powered vehicle to be offered with an auto box, according to Iveco. Across the Daily range Martin Flach said that take-up of the Hi-Matic gearbox has been significant, accounting now for around 40% of orders, no doubt helped by a negligible price difference compared to the manual version. The Daily Hi-Matic NP can be fitted with a number of specially strengthened tanks giving a range of between 250 - 450km on CNG power. There’s also a small petrol tank with a range of about 100km - vehicles run only in CNG mode unless there is no more CNG fuel, whereupon the engine switches automatically to petrol mode.

UPDATE | 17 Power is provided by a 3.0 litre F1C engine that generates 136bhp and 350Nm of torque and is Euro 6 / D compliant. Compared to to the equivalent 3.0 litre diesel engine it has 12% lower NOx emissions but an impressive 76% less particulate matter. CO2 emissions are also 5% better in real-life driving in urban environments when using the automatic gearbox, mentioned Martin.

fully loaded 3-battery Daily Electric can expect to travel around 200km before re-charging. Fitment of an optional rapid charger will re-charge the batteries to about 80% in two hours.

Another reason to opt for the Hi-Matic gearbox is a 2.5% fuel saving compared to the manual equivalent. In fact, says Iveco, factoring in cheaper fuel prices, and better engine efficiency and energy value, natural gas can deliver cost savings in excess of 35% compared to diesel.

Like most electric vehicles, the Daily Electric is a pleasure to drive, though in order to maximise range, the driver does need to switch between the different modes and regenerative braking options. Loaded up with a half-tonne payload, it offers rapid acceleration in Power mode, though it was noticeable how it started to slow on a longer incline. The Eco mode should be used when acceleration isn’t required - it’s noticeably more sluggish in this sett ing, but range does improve. Equally, judicious use of regenerative braking can mean having to touch the actual brake pedal far less than you might think on downhill sections.

Taking an un-laden Luton-bodied Daily NP for a test drive, the fi rst thing we noticed was that it was noticeably quieter at startup and low speeds compared to the diesel model. We did notice that it sounded a bit ‘boomy’ at certain engine revs but overall it’s pleasantly muted and certainly we had no problems carrying on a conversation without having to raise voices. The Hi-Matic gearbox is a pleasure to use, and frankly we’d be surprised if anyone would opt for a manual after trying this out. It slips seamlessly between changes, and is rarely caught out in the wrong gear. The only caveat we noticed was a slight inclination to surge away from standstill, meaning you need to be subtle with the right foot, particularly if operating in a tight environment. As ever, the real restriction with natural gas-powered vehicles is the lack of fuel outlets. There are around 40 in the UK, with 40 more in progress, more offering Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) than CNG. In Ireland the fi rst publicly accessible, fast-fi ll CNG station at Topaz (Circle K) Dublin Port has yet to open. Daily Electric The Electric version of the Daily has been around since 2009, since then it has undergone continuous upgrades. The version offered today is the most versatile to date, with options on the number of batteries and charging solutions available. Price remains restrictive at present. A Daily Electric equipped with one battery will cost in the region of £60,000 in the UK (depending on spec), with the addition of a second or third battery adding £20,000 or £40,000 respectively. Each sodium nickel chloride battery has a real-life driving range of about 70km, so a

The latest model comes with new connected services including a new Web Monitoring Application that enables fleet managers to monitor the vehicles in real time.

On the issue of silent electric vehicles, the Daily Electric is fitted with a Pedestrian Warning Noise that emits a distinctive hum on the move. Problem is it’s annoyingly intrusive inside the cabin, so you’ll be quickly tempted to turn it off. Daily Euro 6 RDE Ready The third arrow in Iveco’s green quiver is the most conventional, but equally the one that will have broadest appeal. Using a refined version of the regular 2.3 litre F1A diesel engine with power outputs of 136bhp/350Nm and 156bhp/380Nm, it is the fi rst LCV to be tested and verified for Real Driving Emissions (i.e. RDE-ready), anticipating the challenging 2020 environmental targets. Featuring Iveco’s Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) aftertreatment system, a Start/Stop system and the fitment of Michelin Agilis+ eco-tyres, it uses up to 7 percent less fuel compared to the current version based on a real urban customer mission. Only available on 3.5t Dailys as the RDE test only applies to cars and light commercials, the RDE Ready Daily which has a premium of about £800 will be sold alongside the regular Euro 6 diesel until 2020 when RDE comes in.

Renault’s 4x4 system can Master the tough stuff

R

enault has joined the ranks of light commercial manufacturers offering all-wheel-drive versions of its larger vans with a 4x4 version of the Master. Unlike most of its rivals, which typically offer a ‘when needed’ type of allwheel drive, where the vehicle normally runs in 2WD mode until traction is lost, the Master 4x4 utilises a more traditional system where the driver manually engages 4WD. Further adding to the vehicle’s off-road capabilities, there’s also a low ratio setting.

The system is currently offered as an aftermarket solution by Setanta Vehicle Sales for Renault Trucks in Ireland, though Renault Trucks is indicating that it may shortly start offering the system as a standard product offering. The 4x4 conversion is done by Oberaigner GmbH, an Austrian company that has been providing specialist vehicle conversions for over 40 years, with the likes of Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and Opel among the brands for

On the inside, the control unit for selecting the various modes on the Oberaigner 4x4 system is fitted on the dash above the radio. It’s tidy enough but clearly an aftermarket fitment. Notable is the affi xed warning on the unit ‘Never use 4x4 on dry hard roads’ underpinning that the system is for hardcore off-road use. Also noticeable is that the dash warning lights for ABS and ESP come on when the 4x4 system is engaged, as these systems are disengaged in AWD mode.

which it has provided vehicles. That the Master 4x4 is intended for serious off-road work is highlighted by the fact that it offers 65mm more ground clearance on the front axles and 58mm at the back. The extra height also gives improved departure angles, and further off-road protection is offered via an engine sump guard. Offered on vehicles operating at 3,500kgs or 4,500kgs (i.e. the RWD versions of the Master), it can be fitted to panel vans, minibuses or chassis cabs, on Medium or Long Wheel Bases, and with a choice of single or twin rear wheels. As such it should appeal to businesses operating in the utilities, construction and forestry sectors where more conventional 4x4 systems just would not cut the mustard. Weighing in at 195kgs more than regular Masters means there is no great impact on load capabilities. Visually there is little to differentiate it externally from regular models apart from a discrete 4x4 badge beneath the Master moniker on the rear.

Otherwise the Master 4x4 will be familiar to anyone who has driven Renault’s large van in recent years. Controls are clear and simple to operate, and the driver has good visibility via the large mirrors. That extra ground clearance doesn’t have any noticeable impact on vehicle handling when driving on road. Power from the 163hp M9T 2.3 litre diesel on the 3.5 tonne GVW panel van provided was more than adequate, albeit with the caveat that the vehicle was unladen for the test drive. The 4x4 system is also offered on a less powerful 145hp version of the Euro 6 engine. The 4x4 system is engaged by pressing the button on the dash control, with the digital display indicating whether the 4x4 and Low ratio systems are activated. The AWD system can be engaged on the move at speeds of up to around 25km/h, though one needs to be stationary to activate the low ratio system. One may need to clutch / declutch to activate the latter as it can occasionally be a little difficult to engage. A limited opportunity to try out the 4x4 system in a quarry suggested that the Master 4x4 should be well capable of tackling rough stuff. When the 4x4 is engaged, torque is distributed 50:50 front to rear to optimise traction. Drive it on-road in 4x4 mode at more than 25km/h and a warning beep will sound. The Master 4x4 isn’t intended to be a volume seller, rather Renault sees this as an added appeal for customers who may require a van to tackle some rough stuff, thus hopefully keep them from looking elsewhere.

MAN TGE – The truck brand among vans

P

robably one of the most significant new introductions in the recent history of MAN Truck & Bus’s product line has been the TGE light commercial vehicle range. Since making its debut for the UK and Irish markets at the CV Show last year, the new TGE line-up has generated great interest and custom in the UK and across Europe, ranging from owner-driver operations to large multifunctional fleets - and has received a few accolades to date. The broad TGE range begins with the 3.0 tonne GVW and extends to 5.5 tonnes GVW. It’s available in various configurations, with the latest version, the 3.5 tonne Rear Wheel Drive model recently premiered at the CV Show 2018 at the NEC, Birmingham completing the family. Overall the MAN TGE offers a choice of drive tractions including Front Wheel Drive (FWD), Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) and All-Wheel Drive (AWD). With a selection of panel vans from 9.3m3 to 18.4m3, and both single and crew cab chassis variants offering three or seven seats respectively, there is a great choice for customers to choose from. The Combi van is primarily the people carrier variant. The TGE is powered by the Volkswagen Group’s 2.0 litre TDI turbo-diesel mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission or an optional eight-speed automatic transmission. Power outputs stretch from 102 hp to 177 hp.

On the panel van line, the TGE comes equipped with low loading heights and an extra-wide 1,311 mm sliding side door(s) along with numerous load lashing points (14) as well as a towing capacity of up to 3.5 tonnes. TGE is made under licence from the Volkswagen Group at its new Crafter plant in Poland. LED load compartment lighting is installed as standard. Safety is paramount with the MAN TGE as Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) is fitted as standard. With EBA a visual and audible warning is raised if the driver doesn’t react to an approaching hazard and if necessary activates full braking automatically. Other optional aids include Park Steering Assist, Side Assist and Active Lane Assist. All MAN TGE van customers are supported by a nationwide commercial vehicle dealer network. The new MAN TGE has commercial vehicle experience on board and whether it’s on a construction site, in the forest or passenger transport, it will get to grips with almost any terrain easily. Inside, driver comfort is in abundance with a perfectly positione driving position with great visibility all round. Storage areas are aplenty with large, deep storage trays and bins all around the cabin. Additional space can be found by folding the seat forward or reclining the backrest of the dual passenger seat. The dashboard features four-cup holders as well as 12V, 230 and two USB charge points.

Vauxhall’s Past, Present and Future

O

n the occasion of a recent visit to Luton to see the new Opel/Vauxhall Combo at the Vauxhall Heritage Centre, a whole world from the past opened up – 115 years of automobile history from the uniquely British marque. Inside the multi-room premises is Vauxhall’s strong collection of vehicles, covering every decade since the company started building cars in 1903, the majority of which were built in Luton, at the famous Kingston Road plant.

Both inside and outside there is a selection of commercial vehicles from the ‘Griffin’ brand. These include the 1931 2-tonne truck, together with models from the Bedford days, such as the CA and CF panel vans beautifully restored and maintained by senior restorers, Andy Boddy and Terry Forder. Two years ago, the thirtieth anniversary since the last Bedford commercial vehicle manufactured was marked. Highlighted then was an early SL model HB as well as two vans that were built at either end of the Bedford production era. From the modern era, the once off electric CF model stood out, as did the compact Rascal vans.

The van to own in the fifties and early sixties was the Bedford CA. It surpassed all the opposition and was introduced in 1952 as both a panel van and chassis cowl. It proved popular for delivery drivers and roundsmen (with its sliding doors) and the cab-only version provided bodybuilders with many opportunities for specialist coachwork, such as dropsides, milk floats and mobile shops. The Dormobile was the first of many conversion carried out with elevating roofs to accommodate families on holiday as a mobile home. This example comes from the end of the production (over a quarter of a million were made between 1952 and 1969) and features the bigger one-piece windscreen and a larger radiator grille. The livery is that of the vans used at the Vauxhall plant in the early sixties.

The CF was a range of full-size panel vans produced by Bedford. This van was introduced in 1969 to replace the 17-year-old CA model and was sized to complete directly with the Ford Transit. Its design was similar to its American counterpart, the Chevrolet Van

cross the road from the Vauxhall Heritage Centre is the light commercial vehicle plant which is still producing Vivaro type vans. Last April the brand’s new owners the PSA Group announced significant investment in the longestablished facility to increase annual production from 60,000 Opel/Vauxhall units to a capacity of 100,000 Vivaros per year on the Group’s EMP2 platform from 2019. Good news indeed for the 1,800 strong workforce at the historic plant as much concern and worry was expressed about the future of the facility following the takeover by the PSA Group of the entire assets of General Motors Europe. Four years ago, Vauxhall Luton achieved the ‘Built in Quality’ (BIQ) Level 4 Certification, a top-level manufacturing benchmark. Auditors regularly visit the plant to check the assembly process against a checklist of 95 different items affecting the quality of the vans built there. Quality control is so sophisticated at Luton that activity has moved from detection to prevention, thereby achieving manufacturing excellence. In 2016, at the RoSPA Occupational Health & Safety Awards, Vauxhall scooped the Gold award in recognition for excellence in safety at its Luton plant. At one time, Luton produced vans for the Renault Nissan Alliance partnership on which the Vivaro is based. Of the 60,000 units produced last year, over 40% are sold in its home market. Up to 40% of parts and components used are sourced
