CELEBRITY CELEBRITYSCENE SCENE

“MDNA,” Madonna’s new album, which hit stores on March 26 as a launch to her 2012 tour, is the diva’s latest stab at being relevant. From her non-stop poppy “Give Me All Your Lovin’” collaboration with M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj, to her sleepy Super Bowl performance, Madonna has succeeded in throwing herself back into the spotlight, and holding onto it for dear life. She even managed to keep a buzz going long after her surprise performance at Ultra Music Festival ended, courtesy of a Twitter war with the electronic icon Deadmau5.

M

adonna’s—desperate—attempts at appealing to a younger audience are painfully obvious. Guest vocals from flavor-of-the-week pop singers, drug references, heavy synth backings, and even dubstep breakdowns make the album at times practically unbearable. Madonna—who comes to Miami at the American Airlines Arena on Nov. 19 and 20—is 53 years old. She’s

n o t g e t t i n g trashed at clubs and taking home strangers anymore. The “party rock” vibe of the album ultimately feels unnatural.

T

o be fair, if we look past the manufactured sound, some of the hooks and choruses do manage to stick. Pop music is meant to get stuck in your head and stay there. MDNA is no exception. The sparkling synths and loud

crippling beats, combined with Madonna’s soft girlish vocals, work in her favor. The two don’t duke it out, but rather work together effortlessly to provide a refreshing experience. Songs like “Masterpiece” strike a familiar chord. There’s a fantastic mix of throwback 80s Madonna, and new drum-heavy Madge. Amidst the shiny beats and heavy production, the album somehow manages to lose its stride at times, and in the end, likewise manages to leave the listener bored. Brownie points for still cranking out the music, but something age-appropriate might be just the refreshing album everyone is waiting for from the Queen of Pop.

How to Host a Fun and Memorable

Game Night

O

ther t h a n toys, nothing touches the kid inside each of us like playing a favorite game. This is not about sports—we will talk about those closer to Memorial Day and then summer—but good old board games. The board game has a history that parallels that of the birth of civilizations: most societies have played them, and in some of the earliest civilizations their creation predates that of the ability to read and write! There were board games found in both Pre-Dynastic and First Dynasty Egyptian burials (long before anyone had even heard of a pyramid), and the ancient people of India played Pachisi (or, as my bf Mr. Wonderful insists on calling it, “Parcheesi”).

Scrabble, Scattergories, Clue, Yahtzee, Balderdash, Trivial Pursuit, Pictionary, UNO, Monopoly—all of these familiar titles will lend themselves to a successful game party night.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN! A fun night of board games is the perfect excuse for an evening of great company and tickling the inner child (and inner competitor) in each guest. Decide how many guests you plan to invite: is this going to be a set number of guests for a tournament style play, or is it “the more the merrier” in theme and tone? I’m going to suggest the more games the better, so that none of your guests will feel left out of a good time (and a good way to ensure this is to ask everyone to bring his or her favorite game). Taboo,

The Play’s the Thing As part of theme and tone, decide if you want games from a variety of “genres” or if you want to focus on a specific type. Examples include conversation-friendly choices, like Yahtzee or checkers, or more challenging fare like Trivial Pursuit or Scrabble. Most of your guests will probably enjoy a mix of these. “Team” games (like Taboo) are perfect for partnered couples (or for singles who might like to get better acquainted with their game partner).

Suggestion: Make Love Not War. You want ALL your guests to enjoy themselves, so consider banning games with a “war” theme. Understand: I’ve been playing and enjoying Risk and similar games (Axis and Allies, anyone?) since I was old enough to wear combat boots, but some games—particularly those with an objective of “conquest”—are more likely to raise the competitive hackles of some of your more aggressive (or touchy), so it is best to steer clear. Obviously, all games are competitive, but I can count on my hands, feet, and elsewhere the number of “heated” moments that have arisen when Boyfriend One launched a surprise attack against Boyfriend Two in a lull during one of the aforementioned games. You have been forewarned, General. (On the other hand, nothing’s quite as satisfying as settling an old score across a game board.) Invitations Send miniature copies of game boards with the party details printed on back. If Scrabble is on the evening’s “game card,” you could make invites by pasting letter cubes or alphabet stickers to spell out the party details. Decorations Board game boxes hanging on the wall advertise that you and your guests are gonna be getting down to some serious gaming. Use a Twister mat board as a tablecloth. If you have time and skills, build a tabletop centerpiece by gluing a house of cards together. Monopoly money, decks of playing cards, and Yahtzee and Bingo score pads can be used to make fun banners to hang over the various gaming “stations,” if you choose such a set up (see below). Set-Up Depending on the size of your home and your number of guests (and number of games), you might arrange several gaming areas to accommodate all the action: maybe it’s Backgammon on the living room floor (with plenty of throw pillows for comfort) and Monopoly in the dining room while You & Co. team up for Taboo in the sunroom. Card tables and TV trays are ideal for stationing snacks like bowls of pop corn and chips. Because games bring out the kid in everyone, think about setting up a “Candyland” with lots of miniature and economy sizes of your fave sugary treats (but don’t forget your guests who prefer more healthy offerings).

Bonus Round Game night is about friendly competition, so think about highlighting the evening’s big winners with trophies or prizes: there are inexpensive and fun gifts that make great awards at area consignment and thrift shops (many of which benefit local charities—shameless plug: check out some of the cool stuff at the new Boomerang’s thrift store on the Drive, next to Acapulco Lindo). Fill the trophy with game pieces and tokens (and candies), or go bananas and buy an inexpensive gift card for the Grand Prize winner. Send your guests home with small party favors, like travel games or card decks. Scrumptious Scrabble and Taboo Treats Besides snacks, you will want to offer some fun and easy to prepare foods for your guests to nibble upon. Here is a delicious recipe that’s a yummy variation on food that’s as familiar as childhood: Pizza on a Stick Ingredients • 1 lb. piece of dough • ½ cup of pizza sauce or crushed tomatoes • 1 ½ cups of grated mozzarella cheese • Pepperoni or other toppings • You will also need 2 or 3 baking sheet pans with non-stick baking mats or sheets. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Roll the dough into a ¼ inch thick rectangle. Be sure to use enough flour so the dough won’t stick. Layer the sauce, cheese, and pepperoni. Some of the cheese should remain exposed so that it can melt and form an “adhesive” hold the pizza together. Roll the dough into a log, starting with the long end. With kitchen shears, cut the dough into ½ inch thick buns. Place them on the non-stick sheets, leaving enough room for them to expand as they bake. Let them stand on the counter for about 20 minutes. Bake for 15-18 minutes or until golden brown and the cheese has melted and caramelized a bit. Makes about two dozen pizzas.

Eating Healthy without the Guesswork

A

week ago Sunday was National Earth Day, and what better way to celebrate, we thought, than eat at Energy Kitchen, an eco-friendly restaurant with a fresh approach to a healthy diet. The idea here is a simple one: everything on the menu is 500 calories or less. Nothing is fried—not even the fries! They are baked, and so is everything else, unless it’s steamed or grilled. Think of it as fast food, without the junk element, and you’ve got the picture of Energy Kitchen. Located next to CVS Pharmacy in a spot that once housed a chicken joint, the first impression of Energy Kitchen is efficiency. Green, white and stainless steel is the color scheme here. Three flat-screen monitors display the menu, which is broken down into categories: Breakfast, Salads, Wraps, Burgers, Entrees, Sides, Snacks and Beverages. We opted for a Veggie Tuna wrap on multi-grain ($6.49) and a Sirloin Steakhouse Burger ($6.49) on a whole wheat bun. We were given a beeper that carried the label “Please Chill While We Grill.” At Energy Kitchen, everything carries a message it seems. The plastic cups hark “Do the Math. Nothing over 500 Calories.” The window signs offer “Our Promise to You,” which essentially was a pledge from founder Anthony Leone that there were “no hidden temptations and no hidden calories” in a place where even the drinks are all nocalorie favorites. The Veggie Tuna wrap was a thickly-packed pleasure dome of flavor, that defied its listed calorie count of 342. It contained a tasty mix of cucumbers, celery, onions, peppers, lettuce tomato and low-fat mayonnaise with enough tuna to make you want to immediately swim upstream, and order another. The Sirloin Steakhouse Burger came in at 413 calories. The juicy meat was

40

stacked high with caramelized onions and steak sauce. The bun was steamed and the overall experience left the stomach full and the taste buds singing. As we shared a bag of 151 calorie air-baked fries ($1.99) which could have used a bit more time in the oven, we checked the nearby tables and found happy campers enjoying an enormous Buffalo Chicken Burger ($6.49) which the accompanying fanning of the lips suggested was very spicy; the signature Kitchen Chopped Salad ($7.99) with chicken, scallions, tomatoes, blue cheese, turkey bacon bits and lots of romaine; plus an energy drink called the Vaccinator ($4.99), containing orange juice, strawberries, bananas, vitamin C and nonfat vanilla yoghurt. As we rolled out, doggie bags in hand, and completely satisfied with our experience, we were surprised to discover the number of unbussed dirty tables, scraps of food and paper on the floor, and a spilled soda that had been marked by a yellow plastic “Caution” tent with a marginal attempt at clean-up. We mentioned the fact to the employees chatting amongst themselves at the register, and got cheery smiles but no obvious action to correct the situation. Oh well. We all know good help is hard to find, and we’re sure Energy Kitchen will work out the kinks. Nevertheless, the concept is a solid one, and in a city where the obesity rate is clearly on the rise, this is one restaurant that deserves to be packed for good-intentions alone. We can’t wait to return to try the Bison & Egg Breakfast Wrap ($4.99). With five egg whites and chopped premium bison, you just know that one is a winner—just like Energy Kitchen itself. Go--and tell them Guy Magazine sent you.

“Step away from the Ear Buds!” or, Is it legal to “bud” while you drive?

T

he folks behind free roadside assistance—that’s priced affordably— the American Automobile Association (AAA) and Lifehacker.com have put together an interactive map that lets you know just how legal it is in to wear headphones/earbuds in any given state. I honestly don’t know how much of an “impact” this will have in terms of driving safety, but on the other hand, that isn’t necessarily the purpose behind selling apps in the first place. Although most grownups know that they have to drive “hands-free” when talking on a cell phone to ensure optimal vehicular safety—insert laughter here—many of these same Road Warriors haven’t gotten the memo that says it’s even more dangerous to have Madonna blasting directly into your eardrums at 8,000 decibels as your motor along at 80 mph on the Drive. Rather than bore you with legalese, the map color codes which states of the Union allow you to “get your earbud on” with a breakdown of the four states (Colorado, Louisiana, Rhode Island, and Maryland) where the behavior is “mostly illegal,” the 33

where it is “mostly legal,” and the 13 (including Florida) where “it’s complicated.” (In Florida, it is illegal to wear earbuds or headphones while you’re driving—although the law says it’s cool to have a hearing aid in one or both ears—hey, this is Florida.) All this having been said—as AAA notes—something can be legal and stupid at the same time, and listening to music that’s piped straight into your waxy canals is both distracting and can impede your ability to hear the sirens of emergency vehicles as well as other important traffic sounds—like that 18-wheeler that’s heading straight for you-know-who. The app has two versions: the free one— to reel you in—and the $9.99 “expansion” which lets you participate in the app’s six “missions” scenarios. The free version let’s you experience a training exercise that doesn’t need the foam fighter plane. But the fun missions (all based on actual Second World War battles) require that you scan the model plane’s wing, which accesses the scenarios (thus requiring the forking-over of ten bucks: but it is well worth the expense).

A Reworked Spotify for Android The new Spotify for Android is an app whose time has come. The app—with a slicker look than its predecessor—has more focus on its visual presentation, including a slew of hi-rez images of artists and album covers that enhance the experience. The app also works harder to find music, with both Spotify’s own recommendations and those gleaned from profile pages and playlists from your friends. The app fully supports the Android 4.0, and includes a top-to-bottom redesign, all-new slide-out navigation, and “extreme” sound quality settings for 320kbps listening. It will soon be available for iPad, and the developer says it will add Last FM scrobbling before the app goes live in Google Play. News that is charming for even the most savage beast.

Amazon “Kindles” a “Fire” in the Tablet Race The most popular tablet on the market that utilizes Google’s Android OS is Amazon’s Kindle Fire. Released last November, the Kindle Fire has nearly doubled its piece of the Android market in just two months, with Amazon saying the tablet is its bestselling, most wished-for, and most gifted product of the millions of items it has ever sold online. That’s saying something, as nine out of 10 top Amazon.com sellers during the first quarter of 2012 were digital products. Forbes magazine (I keep my monthly copy next to my vintage Sumo wrestler porn collection) calls the tablet market a “two-horse race,” between Kindle Fire and the iPad, although they are two very different devices. Here are a couple of apps that are a must for new Kindle Fire users: iHeartRadio This is fast becoming THE preferred app for streaming music. Unlike Pandora (which I also enjoy), this lets you tune to local radio stations as well as allowing you to generate custom “stations” based on your own musical tastes. Netflix (and Hulu Plus) Apps are available for both streaming content providers for the tablet. With all the movies and TV shows available, in my opinion (which is to say in my bf’s opinion), it is well worth the monthly subscription fee. Vevo Free music videos at your fingertips! Is there a downside to this?

Guy Travel By ROBERT ELIAS DEATON

Part II—The Hotels, The Clubs, The Adventure In November 2001, Klaus Wowereit became mayor of Berlin. Now in his third term, Klaus’s favorite color is pink, and he is not subtle in showing his preference for it. Klaus, you see, is gay—which in Berlin is no big deal. In fact, it helped Klaus get elected, having admitted to his cheering fanbase, “Ich bin schwul, und das ist auch gut so.” (“I’m gay, and that’s a good thing.”) The city has been a center for gay and lesbian intellects, playboys, and creative types for nearly a century, so there’s noshortage of bars, restaurants, hotels and clubs catering to them. The trick is in the sorting, ranging from hot, really hot, to sizzling hot--just like the customers themselves.

Hotels Axel Hotel Berlin (Lietzenburger Str. 13/15, Schöneberg) Our favorite hotel in all of Berlin is the trendy Axel. With other locations in Barcelona and Buenos Aires, the “hetero friendly” gay Axel Berlin is

centrally located in Schöneberg and right up the straße from the Wittenbergplatz subway station. The minimalist rooms are designed with an open shower for the ultimate in showing off for your traveling companion or overnight guest. WIFI is free throughout the hotel, with the Urban Bar within the hotel, and a rooftop hot-top with spectacular views. Book through the hotel directly for preferred rates. (www.axelhotels.com/ berlin). When clean and cheap is the order of the day, we recommend the ArtHotel (Fuggerstr. 33, Schöneberg) where $94.00 gets you a room for two. Late risers alert: the free breakfast buffet is served at the ArtHotel until 4 p.m. At check-in, receive a free pass to Boilers Sauna (see below) and Connections Club next door plus a Vodka Redbull cocktail to supercharge your first moments in Berlin. Flat screen TV, DVD players, and Ipod stations are standard in this no smoking hotel.

ArtHotel Clubs Mutschmann’s (Martin-LutherStraße 19) is a fetish cruise bar with an international reputation. It has a strict dress code of leather, rubber or military on the weekends when it opens its doors at 10 p.m. Should you be one of the unfortunates that forgot to pack leather, the club opens to the curious on Wednesday nights and welcomes all. (www.mutschmanns.de) Tom’s Bar (Motzstraße 19) has been around since the 90s, and fancies itself as “the” first-stop on any gay man’s sweep of the gayborhood. Lately, it’s instituted a rather amusing door policy where humiliation seems to be part of the technique. (No, we were not turned away, silly rabbit. However, we did witness many hot men who were.) Triebwerk (Urbanstraße 64) This club specializes in underwear and naked nights to such an extent that you’re only allowed to wear head-to-toe clothing on one night— Mondays. Even then, you may be the only one dressed, but at least you’ll get in. KitKatClub (Köpenicker Straße 76— entrance Brückenstraße) The club is truly legendary and worth a visit just for the matchbooks alone. Opened in the mid90s by porno producer Simon Thaur and his GF Kirsten Krüger (Miss Kitty is usually

manning the door), this place is the site of the most intense fetish parties in town. Themes change daily so check its website. (www.kitkatclub.org/Home/Club)

Saunas Boiler (Mehringdamm 34) The newest bathhouse in Berlin opened in September of last year to compete with the established and larger Apollo Splash Club (Kurfürstenstraße 101). Both saunas provide the essential wet steam, dry sauna and cruising rooms, with enough hot men to pack the joints starting in the late afternoon right through to sunrise. Enhale the excitement.

Ask Arlen By DR. ARLEN LEIGHT

Dear Arlen:

I was with a few friends the other night, and I overheard one of them saying that “Rick [me] only dates a**holes.” At first I was shocked, but afterwards I realized it’s kind of the case, in the sense that I usually only date “bad boys.” Is there something wrong with that (or me)?

“Rick”

Dear “Rick,” Let me say right off, a** holes and bad boys are not the same animal. Not all a**holes are bad boys. It can be argued whether or not all bad boys are a**holes! But, to answer your question, there is nothing wrong with dating a**holes or bad boys, as long as you are happy.

You

must ask yourself when dating bad boys if you feel you are somehow giving up your own values, being used or abused, and/or getting your needs met. The reason it is not unusual for the so-called bad boy to have difficult character traits is that

Whole Eggs: Nature’s Perfect Food

B

reakfast dishes would not be quite the same without the incredible, edible egg. This healthy protein is one of the top choices when Americans sit down in the morning before heading off to work, or relax at a Sunday brunch. Yet recently eggs have been getting a bad rap, as a new health conscious fad suggests that it’s healthier to eat the egg white alone, disposing of the yolk which has been labeled as ladened with fat and cholesterol. Restaurants have jumped on the bandwagon. One can choose to have egg white only omelets, burritos, and breakfast sandwiches. Cutting down calories per sitting seems to be a wise and health conscious choice. In theory, getting rid of the fatty part of the egg should help those individuals who want to lose those last few extra pounds. The mistake in this logic is that with the affordable egg, Mother Nature has given us a complete perfect food. Toss out the yolk, and you’ll be missing out on the healthiest part of the egg! The yolk is very high in antioxidants, a spectrum of vitamins and minerals, as well as healthy cholesterol-fighting Omega-3 fats and all of the essential fatty acids. Yolks contain vitamin A, plus vitamins B6 and B12, other trace minerals, choline, foliate, lecithin and lutien (which gives egg yolks their color). B vitamins are especially helpful for nerve function, while lecithin is a natural emulsifier rich in choline, which aids in the process of fat metabolization in the body. Although the body already produces enough choline for

54

|

guy magazine

normal needs, added dietary sources aid in reducing the accumulation of fat in the liver and help repair neurological damage. Lutien is an antioxidant, which helps in the prevention of inflammation (which is a major factor in fighting heart disease), and also helps strengthen the eyes. The yolk also contains 90% of the calcium in the egg, far outweighing the egg white. Iron, phosphorus, zinc and panthothentic acid are only found in the egg yolk, but not the white. In addition, the yolks also contain all of the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. The Omega-3 fats in eggs are essential to lowering fat and cholesterol. Eating the entire egg actually raises your good HDL levels and lowers your LDL levels. This helps improve the overall cholesterol ratio and blood chemistry in your body. This helps keep the fat burning hormones in the body in check, keeping more fat from being stored and burning more of the fat that is already there. This should be duly noted by anyone who is trying to lose weight. As wonderful as the egg yolk sounds, consume it in moderation. The American Heart Association recommends consuming no more than four egg yolks a week. Eating the correct amount of yolks along with the egg whites keeps cholesterol levels within the AHA guidelines of 300mg a day. The extra calories in the egg yolk are really no extra calories at all when you look in the grand scheme of your day. Egg yolks do contain more calories than egg whites, but the yolks micro-nutrientrich density of those calories actually aids in appetite regulation. This helps you eat less and lowers overall calorie intake for the day. Oh, and one more thing: Eggs yolks contain all of the flavor! Next time you go to toss out that powerhouse of energy and nutrients, stop yourself, armed with the knowledge that you’re starting your bright, new sun-shiny day correctly.

S

tephen Fallon, the Executive Director of Latinos Salud, knows his way around an HIV/AIDS service organization, having worked in that niche of the non-profit industry since 1995. In 2000, he began working with gay and minority-based agencies and clinics that wanted to expand their HIV prevention and support services. “I’ve met some great people, helping agencies in 40 states through my consultancy,” says Fallon. Fallon, a Broward County native, recounts that he was made aware in 2008 of a sudden gap in HIV prevention service for gay Latinos. (Fallon reminds us, too, that the Greater Fort Lauderdale area now ranks second in the nation in its rate of both new HIV infections and new AIDS diagnoses: “I can’t think of a better place to devote my energies in the HIV field.”) He says that Latinos Salud’s mission is to “provide client-centered, culturally competent health education and integrated preventive health services to Broward County’s Latino residents in order to reduce the burden of communicable diseases.” The non-profit has a range of programs it offers to clients, all of which focus on HIV: prevention workshops, counseling for both HIV-negative Latino men and for persons living with HIV/AIDS. They have also recently added HIV rapid testing. Says Fallon: “Latinos Salud has a unique model for all of our services. We don’t preach, lecture, or tell our visitors to take a number. Instead, all of our services take place in a community-building context.”

58

|

guy magazine

The organization focuses on individual needs, rather than taking a “one-size-fits-all” approach. “We have networking dinners that teach Latino guys to become leaders,” says Fallon. “We help guys one-on-one if they want to develop their resumes, practice interviewing skills, or plan their next steps in a relationship. We also host fun events at the agency and off-site, where young guys find support and take pride in pulling an event together.” Fallon and his team conduct educational sessions and meetings to reach their target audience. “Our SOMOS program offers a monthly workshop that covers everything from dating vs. hooking up, to the mechanics of safer sex, to special monthly themes of interest to Latino guys, ages 18 to 30,” says Fallon. “Our JUNTOS Popular Opinion Leader program offers a four-session leadership development series each month, that empowers Latino guys 25 to 44 to create solutions in their community, all while having a great time.” To familiarize the Latino community with its work, Latinos Salud has a number of upcoming events open to the public, including a barbecue on April 28 at its 2330 Wilton Drive office, which will be open to Latino guys age 18 to 30. On May 12, the group will host a community leaders’ reunion event, open to Latinos and others. And on May 18, Fallon invites the community to their pre-AIDS Walk launch party, with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and prizes. In spite of economic challenges, and a dwindling federal budget to support many worthwhile programs, the lights are on late at Latinos Salud’s office, with staff onsite Monday through Friday between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., and sometimes later. “Any Latino gay guy can come in,” Fallon says. “You don’t have to have an appointment, or even a clear idea of what you want to do here. You’re welcome to use our guest computers, our Wi-Fi, and visit.” Fallon says that despite an apparent focus on a narrow segment, the work of Latinos Salud (which means “Healthy Latinos” in Spanish) has a far-reaching impact. “Latino guys are part of your community: one-in-five Broward residents is Latino, even if your friends do not speak to you in Spanish.” For more information, visit latinossalud.org.
