GOT GAY-TENTION DEFICIT DISORDER?
From the hot topics to the hot messes, here is what you may have missed last week. GOTTA FUCK 'EM ALL There’s now a Pokémon Go gay porn parody, because it’s 2016 and this is just the sort of thing we have to deal with now. Fuckémon Go: A Gay Porn Parody comes from the deranged minds at Men.com. This time around it’s last month’s smartphone obsession (what took you so long, guys?) that’s got their attention. “After a long day of mastering their ball-handling technique catching Fuckémon, Ash and his buddy, Brock, are in for a surprise. When the boys hunt down and catch a rare Peek-a-Choo, he evolves into a muscular sex god. What are these boys to do when faced with a hunky, real-life Peek-a-Choo?” REALLY, HOLLYWOOD? Matt Bomer is set to play a transgender sex worker in upcoming film Anything, which has provoked a predictably angry response from people frustrated to see yet another cis actor take on a prominent trans role. Anything is based on a play of the same name by Timothy 12 SEPTEMBER 8, 2016
McNeil. There’s been a predictable and immediate backlash over the casting of another cis actor in a trans role, echoing the response to both Jared Leto and Eddie Redmayne playing trans women in Dallas Buyers Club and The Danish Girl. GONE TOO SOON During last week's episode of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars, there was a first. Adore Delano packed up her bags and went home, making her the first queen to ever quit the franchise. "I'm thinking of going home," she tells Ru. "The critiques last night, and the vibes... It means a lot to me to just stick to my guns. I know how hard it took for me to gain that confidence and own my stardom like you taught me to." Mic. com wrote, "After a heart-to-heart with Michelle, and much pleading from the other queens to stay, Adore chooses to leave — making her the first queen in Drag Race herstory to do so — bringing the number of remaining queens to eight."
FAMILY STONE Gus Kenworthy and his family competed on a special celebrity edition of Family Feud to raise funds for Happy Hippie Foundation, Miley Cyrus's non-profit that provides assistance to LGBTQ homeless youth. When asked about what firemen do that is sexy, Kenworthy responded, "There's a lot that firemen do that I find sexy. But I am going to go with sliding down a pole." Needless to say, mom blushed. DIVA BOY Turns out you won’t have to wait until Sam Smith finishes recording his next album to hear more music from him — though he might not actually have much to do with his latest release. Independent label Flipbook Music has announced it will release Diva Boy, which it claims is Smith’s first album, recorded in 2008 — when he would have been just 16. You mention the Middle East, being from Egypt, have you seen any progress at all there in the past 4 years? Definitely not legally and legislatively. The issue is still taboo. In places it is still criminalized. But in terms of acceptance, which is another side of the story, there has been progress. Every year they do polling and the levels of acceptance are growing… far too slowly and there’s still negativity but the trend is toward increased acceptance. I read that you had suicidal thoughts? How did you make it through that dark period? I found it really difficult when I came out. I grew up being referred to as Egypt’s favorite son and then the day after I came out the press ran a headline calling me public enemy number one and that hit me really hard going from one extreme all the way to the other. What encouraged me was when I started to receive messages from LGBT youth in the Middle East thanking me for my courage. I realized that if I helped one person it was a positive experience. That brought me out of my dark place.

O
mar Sharif Jr. has been visible. As the grandson and namesake of a renowned actor and a major voice for LGBTQ rights in the Middle East and around the world, you may have seen him somewhere at some point. As he prepares to make a trip to South Florida where he will be a guest of honor at the World OutGames Silver Soirée on Thursday, September 8th, he took some time out of his busy schedule to have a chat with us. We are happy he did. When you came out in 2012, you wrote in an article, “I write this article in fear”. What are you still afraid of? That’s a really good question. I was scared. I think coming out is a very scary process no matter your background, no matter what level of support you think you’re going to have. Because it’s always a guessing game you know? It’s moving from the known to the unknown and that process isn’t easy for anyone. A lot has changed. I can tell you I am no longer afraid, now I am just proud. In the Middle East you know coming out is not an easy thing and no public figure had come out openly before I did and so no one really had an example to look to. If my story can pave the way and make things easier for one other person, then I am glad I did it. 14 SEPTEMBER 8, 2016
What does being a gay activist mean to you? You know it’s so funny because I don’t consider myself an activist. I’m just a person with a story. At the end of the day I suppose if you share your story that makes you an activist. So at a certain level, everyone that’s out, everyone that goes to the marches and participates in a pride event or participates at the OutGames is an activist of sorts because they are sharing their story. That’s the quickest way to appeal to people’s hearts and minds. Share your story. Your grandfather was a famous actor; do you feel any pressure from your bloodline? I think there were a lot of expectations on me that I would be a lot like him. You know he was a renowned women’s man, he was a sex symbol, he was you know all of these things. He was a hyper masculine Arab with a beard. But there’s no right way or wrong way to live up to expectations. I did feel a lot of pressure growing up but I no longer feel that. I’ve taken a different path and I didn’t end up in the same place but its no better or worse, it’s just different. I guess this is an easy transition, you mention that your grandfather was a ladies man, what is your love life like now? Are you seeing anyone? I am very single (laughs). I’ve been single for a couple of years now. Um. You know, I aspire to be in a committed relationship. There’s no right or wrong type of relationship but you know that’s sort of what I am looking for. I was offered a role actually to be on a reality dating show being the lead person and I didn’t think that was the right way to go about finding true love. So I think I am still exploring the best avenues to find that right person.
BRIEFENCOUNTER So many people think you’re so hot, so what kind of guy are you looking for? You know I am very fortunate that I am from a family that loves me unconditionally. We are very close and I speak to my parents all the time. So it would be someone with strong family values, a good sense of self and really the expression salt of the earth is really what I am looking for. Just someone with good values. Maybe a good Midwestern boy. (laughs) Where do you live now? I live in New York City! Yeah? What do you love most about New York? I love the energy. Every day I have something new to explore, something new to see and someone new to speak to. I’m never bored. But on the converse side, I am always tired. There’s so much to do here.
beautiful as it is, we sometimes pillar ourselves with people like ourselves. I think this is such a great unifying force and I am excited to be involved with the OutGames. Do you play any sports yourself? My favorite sport is hockey. I grew up playing hockey. Even when I was living in Egypt she used to drive me two hours everyday to the closest ice skating rink to practice my skating and to practice playing hockey. I still watch a minimum 82 hockey games per year to watch the Montreal Canadians play.
Speaking of doing a lot, I saw that you were recently honored as the Grand Marshall of Prague Pride. What was that like for you? It was really special. It was the first time I was a Grand Marshall of a pride parade. Central and Eastern Europe doesn’t have the greatest track record on LGBT rights and they are making great strides. To know that their pride went from a couple thousand a few years ago to more than 40,000 this year is remarkable. Prague can be that beacon of hope for all the neighboring states. This year you’re the guest of honor at the World OutGames Silver Soiree here in Miami. What made you want to be a part of this? I think the OutGames is a tremendous event. What I love most about it is no matter where you come from, your background or what language you speak, sports can sort of be that universal language for everyone. When we all come together and play sports there’s more that unifies us than divides us. I think so often the LGBT community itself, as diverse and as
I see that you were the national spokesperson for GLADD (Gays and Lesbians Allied Against Defamation), how did you react to the Pulse Orlando attack? (long pause) … You know the Pulse attack definitely hit me hard, both as an LGBT person and as an Arab. I am still trying to make sense of the tragedy and that’s something I’ve been speaking to a lot. What that man, and I won’t name him, I don’t think he deserves to be mentioned, is not representative of how the majority of peace loving Arabs feel. At the same time, I felt so victimized because the entire LGBT community does. I just find myself flabbergasted and confused by the sense of victimization that I feel. It’s really tough. I still struggle with it every single day. What’s ahead for you? Anything exciting? I have two projects coming soon. One of them is premiering in a couple weeks. It’s called The Secret Scripture where I have a very small role. And then another television show which they haven’t allowed me to start talking about it. Just more acting and more being visible, whether that’s in terms of speaking out or just living my life. I think it is important to stay visible. N SEPTEMBER 8, 2016 15

Logan Toledano Talks Coming Out
AND GAY LATINO CULTURE BY RENALDO SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY BY DENNIS DEAN
L
ogan Toledano is easy on the eyes. With his tanned skin, bold features and bright smile, he is warm and welcoming at first sight. But as you will learn, his well-groomed, tattoo filled exterior tells far less of a story than his heart and soul has over the years.
In April of 2016, Toledano won the Macho – Beautiful Inside and Out Contest, one that was created by the Coming Out Cuba Foundation, to showcase hot men who do their part to help others in the community as well. Toledano, who heard about the contest from an old friend, submitted a video that showcased his charitable work over the past decade. The clip, that featured a mix of everything from his volunteer trips internationally to his fund raising efforts here at home, was enough for him to win the contest. But as we discovered, it was just a small snapshot into a collage of pain, sacrifice and successes that Toledano has created over time. Now the winner of a campaign that empowers people to come out and be proud of who they are, when we caught up with him, he couldn’t help but reflect on his own experiences as a young man. “When I came out I lost my family. My family disowned me,“ said Toledano. “I was 20 and we lived in West Palm Beach at the time. I was going through my first breakup and I felt guilty that my mother didn’t know who I really was. She was dealing with losing my brother who died and I was at a point in my life where I just needed to say something, so I did,” he added. Unfortunately, his brave step did not lead to him being greeted by hugs, kisses and support. Instead, Toledano says that he was kicked out of the house and was forced to start a new life without any idea of what to do or where to go. Looking back on the moment, Toledano says he wished he would’ve put more thought into the brave choice.

In a way I actually think that helping others is the real cure for depression.
That’s why I got so involved in the community, 26 SEPTEMBER 8, 2016
After coming out, Toledano says he stayed with his family for a couple more months. However, the awkward confrontations with family members eventually drove him away. So what did he do next? Lost and alone, he didn’t let his circumstances break him. This led him to work odd jobs while renting hotels and month-to-month rooms from friends until he got on his feet. He says that from a young age, he knew that he wanted to work in hospitals and help people. So he got his first job in one at the age of 20 and he hasn’t looked back since. Now as a proud registered nurse, Toledano works in the Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital. At 43 years old and married to the love of his life, Avi, Toledano says that he feels more confident about who is as a person now than ever before and believes that the Coming Out Cuba Foundation is something that is definitely needed. In fact, he credits it for pushing him to be even more charitable and outgoing. “I am 100 percent Mexican but this is an amazing thing that they (Coming Out Cuba Foundation) are doing. For the culture the whole coming out thing is something that is amazing. Just those words that say coming out in Cuba implies that you’re Latin and you’re gay and it’s okay. I know just how amazing it is because of my background. I don’t want to downplay it. They are doing a great thing,” he said. Osmany Cabellero, the proud President of the Coming Out Cuba Foundation, says that he is happy Toledano participated and he believes the foundation is important for several reasons. “It is essential since our mission is to reveal the gay Cuban culture pre-revolution while building a new future for the LGBTQ and Cuban communities,” said Cabellero on the significance of the foundation. “The motivation behind Macho was to be able to celebrate, award and recognize the “MACHO” winner for being “Beautiful Inside and Out” awarding a Latin-American man whose beauty and accomplishments made a difference in our community while giving a platform to his efforts and raising awareness to his charity of choice,” he added.
“
I AM 100 PERCENT MEXICAN BUT THIS IS AN AMAZING THING THAT THEY (COMING OUT CUBA FOUNDATION) ARE DOING. FOR THE CULTURE THE WHOLE COMING OUT THING IS SOMETHING THAT IS AMAZING. JUST THOSE WORDS THAT SAY COMING OUT IN CUBA IMPLIES THAT YOU’RE LATIN AND YOU’RE GAY AND IT’S OKAY.
“
“I wasn’t emotionally prepared for that reaction. I thought my mother would love me unconditionally. I remember I just had four garbage bags full of clothes and their attitude was like I did something wrong,” said Toledano. “They said I was possessed by the devil and my mother said that I would never be successful because I choose to be gay. That’s why my tattoo on my upper chest says Success Is My Revenge. That’s something that I use to push me.”
ONTHECOVER
According to Toledano, he was inspired to enter the contest when he found out that the winner would be awarded with a cash prize for the charity of their choice. Immediately, this sparked his interest because he knew that if he won, he would be able to further help Angel Faces, a charity that provides support and retreat for girls and young women with disfiguring injuries. Toledano, who works in a trauma intensive care unit, says that seeing so many girls who suffer from burns first hand led him to the charity that does great work. Since discovering the Angel Faces years ago, it has been a passion of his to help those in need. “My heart has always been attached to those who are burned because although my scars are on the inside, they have their scars on the outside so we are connected in a way. They didn’t choose to be burned and I didn’t choose to be gay and we both carry scars,” said Toledano. To me it is a great program and it helps these girls build a foundation. In a way I actually think that helping others is the real cure for depression. That’s why I got so involved in the community,” he said. In addition to continuing with his donations to Angel Faces and helping the homeless in South Florida through various volunteer efforts, Toledano says that he hopes to branch out even more and take his charitable efforts with him globally in the coming years. Again, he credits the Coming Out Cuba campaign for giving him even more inspiration to continue to give back and even take it to a next level. “I didn’t think I would win but when I was sitting there watching that video it was touching. It was like my family saw me as a bad person and look at all these things that I have done to help people, “said Toledano. “Right now I am living a life and I am happy. I am happy because I am who I wanted to be. It’s their loss. Just be proud of who you are, you know?” N SEPTEMBER 8, 2016 27

TRAVEL
L
uxury means different things to different people. For some, it’s as simple as having something done for you that you’d normally have to do yourself. For others, it implies grand-scale decadence, immersive attractions and elegant amenities that set a place or experience apart from all other options. In singular ways, these five destinations subscribe to all of those definitions, representing perfect vacation getaways for lovers of the luxe. PALMA DE MALLORCA In addition to its safe harbor for the mega-yachts of the über-wealthy, Palma de Mallorca has long been known as a popular playground for the rich and royal of Spain’s Balearic Isles. Former King Juan Carlos is often spotted taking a break from his duties at the island’s swankier watering holes, while other bold-faced names—from Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones, who until recently owned a 247-acre estate on the island, to Paris Hilton—have all made the pilgrimage to this rustically luxurious spot. For the most luxe stay of all, the Belmond La Residencia, Deia, is the leading choice. Once owned by Richard Branson, it’s the luxury hotel in which Princess Diana famously took refuge when her marriage to Charles reached its well-publicized breaking point, and it’s also the site of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 60th birthday celebration, for which the entire hotel was hired. How’s that for discriminating? Best of all, Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera are all just a short ferry ride away. LAS VEGAS The most common misconception about Las Vegas is that its primary appeal is gaming. The truth is there’s so much more to do in Sin City than take turns among the plentiful blackjack tables and slot machines. In fact, with very little effort, you can treat yourself to a luxe holiday with no gambling whatsoever—easy given that there’s more luxury per square foot here than almost anywhere in the world. Wondering where to start? There’s pampering at a memorable array of spas, like the sleek, modern BATHHOUSE Spa at the Delano, the massive 80,000-square-foot Spa at the Aria and the serenely gorgeous Spa at the Mandarin Oriental. Combined with upscale shopping experiences at the Wynn Esplanade and the Shops at Crystals, fine dining at restaurants helmed by revered chefs—Alain Ducasse’s Rivea at the Delano, Julian Serrano’s Lago at the Bellagio and Michael Mina’s Bardot Brasserie at the Aria—an assortment of shows featuring the biggest names in music and entertainment and VIP limo service to and from everything, what could make for a more decadent getaway?
LONDON It’s fitting that home for the British royal family would also house an escape filled with luxe delights. From the old-world elegance of the Goring Hotel (where Queen Elizabeth II is a regular guest for afternoon tea) to the sumptuous retail offerings of Bond Street and Dover Street (where Victoria Beckham opened the flagship store for her wildly successful eponymous clothing line) to the five-star hotels in May Fair and Knightsbridge (think the classically sophisticated Egerton House, the landmark Claridge’s, the esteemed Connaught and the Firmdale Hotel’s Knightsbridge outpost), luxury is London’s forte. Fill your itinerary with visits to the certified providers of goods and services to the royal household and you’ll find yourself in luxe overload. CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA If there’s one word that best describes this seaside town, it would be surreal. Santa Barbara may be heralded by many as California’s answer to the Riviera, but Carmel-by-theSea is endowed with a better claim to the title. A charming boutique-filled town commingled with an unspoiled beach dramatically surrounded by bluffs and a rugged coastline evokes the feeling of la dolce vita best embodied by the likes of Capri and St. Tropez. Among the favorite stops for an elegant stay in Carmel is the Doris Day-owned Cypress Inn in the heart of town and the Clint Eastwood-owned Mission Ranch, where the vistas (along with the company at the bar) are otherworldly. TURKS AND CAICOS Extremely elegant accommodations specializing in privacy, pristine beaches, crystal clear waters, perfect weather yearround, a steady flow of rum-inspired cocktails and not a care in the world make Turks and Caicos a standout among luxe travel getaways. Moreover, if a destination is to be judged by the star power of its regular visitors, it’s a winner on multiple levels. Among the islands’ starry visitors of late are Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who spent their holidays at Donna Karan’s villa in Parrot Cay; Justin Bieber; Christie Brinkley; and newlyweds Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello, who spent their seven-day honeymoon holed up in a remote villa at the exclusive Parrot Cay Resort. FITNESS Here, we list six benefits to getting your D wet. Missionary, doggy style, or riding; on the floor, in the club, or on the roof; spit, lube, or lotion; top, bottom, or flip; if you’re like me you like it all of the ways mentioned above and more. Sex is one of the greatest parts of life. However, sex is more than just a quick fun blast of pleasure sure to make the sheets messy. There are many health benefits to having sex. Here are six of them.
1.Calories will burn while you thrust and churn The thrusting, bouncing, grinding, rolling, and wrestling are all physical activities that will get you breathing heavy in more than one way. According to Men’s Health, “a raucous romp uses about 5 METs (metabolic equivalents), a system for gauging the intensity of physical activity. For example, a 190-pound man would burn 413 calories in an hour of vigorous sexual activity.” So, don’t skip the foreplay!
2.Relieve your stress as you jerk and caress. We can all imagine the feeling of euphoria as we come closer to the big release. According to the Wall Street Journal, “The rush of hormones boosts mood, fosters feelings of closeness and helps manage stress for days.”
3.Shoot on that chest for a great night’s rest. As most of us know, after getting off we tend to be a little groggy. To help ensure you get a good night’s rest, be sure to have sex before bed or at least give each other head.
4.Your heart will grow strong from doing it all night long.
A sexually active lifestyle is not just for the young. Having sex regularly can drastically reduce risks of heart disease. The British Psychological Society states, “In a Welsh heart disease study from 1997, the mortality risk was 50 percent lower in the group of men with high orgasmic frequency (twice a week or more) than in the group with low frequency.”
5.That fountain of goo can make a younger you. There are several factors that contribute to aging, but Dr. David Weeks, a consultant clinical psychologist and former Head of Old Age Psychology suggests, “The key ingredients for looking younger are staying active and maintaining a good sex life.”
6.Plow that hole for a happier soul! Money cannot buy happiness, but sex can. The release of endorphins during intimacy can bring upon a euphoric feeling that can last the rest of the day/ night. So my advice is to have sex daily for a happier life! One thing not to forget, cuddle after! Some of you may disagree, but make your partner(s) feel like you care when the love making is complete. The world does not revolve around you and you should respect and appreciate the person(s) that helped you achieve your climax. Always use protection and talk to your partner(s) before engaging in a sexual act. Know who you blow!
