Haynes was emotional throughout his acceptance speech, fighting back tears as he talked about the freedom he has now to be himself. “I never made a decision to be gay,” said Haynes. “That came just as naturally as the color of my eyes. But, however, it’s up to me to be honest and open with everyone. And that’s why I’m here tonight, and why it’s so special for me. I’m asked to play so many roles as an actor. Twitter‘s top trend since Monday is the tributes from famous names and everyday folks to the legendary comedic actor, Gene Wilder. He died early Monday at home in Stamford CT, his family holding his hands, at the age of 83. A statement from the family revealed he had suffered complications from Alzheimer’s Disease and that the diagnosis had been concealed because “he simply couldn’t bear the idea of one less smile in the world.”

$23 million raised for Orlando victims ORLANDO—OneOrlando Fund as well as Equality Florida’s GoFundMe campaign and several other independent efforts have raised over $23 million for the victims of the mass shooting at Pulse Nightclub and their families. After several town hall meetings in Orlando to determine the fund’s priorities, the donations are now being disbursed based on a variety of criteria set up by the fund’s administer, attorney Ken Feinberg. In the June 12 attack, 49 victims were killed and 53 others injured. One of Feinberg’s biggest obstacles is the bickering over same-sex family claims competing with those of birth family demands. “We aren’t going to get into family arguments about the distribution of money. Work it out,” Feinberg said, suggesting that families go to probate court to determine a designated administrator. “We can’t get in the middle of this,” Feinberg said. Additionally, there were a large number of deceased victims who have relatives outside the U.S. mainland. About half of 49 patrons who were killed had ties to Puerto Rico, and others came from Mexico, Colombia, the Dominican Republic and Guatemala. Victims and their families who feel they are entitled to a portion of the proceeds from the donation drive are asked to register and fill out paperwork at www.oneorlando.org. Feinberg is the founder of Feinberg Rozen Llp, has been responsible for overseeing payouts in the September 11 Victim Compensation Fund, the Boston Marathon Bombing victims, as well as payouts in the Agent Orange settlement. Transgender inmate latest to push for hormone treatment

ST. LOUIS (AP) - A transgender inmate is suing the Missouri prison system for refusing to provide hormone therapy as she transitions to a woman, adding her voice to those of prisoners in other states who argue that denying such treatment amounts to cruel and unusual punishment. Lambda Legal filed the lawsuit in federal court in St. Louis last week on behalf of Jessica Hicklin, a 37-year old inmate serving life in prison after being convicted of first-degree murder at age 16. She is challenging a state Department of Corrections policy that bars hormone therapy for inmates who weren’t receiving it before being incarcerated. According to her lawsuit, it wasn’t until last year that medical experts determined that Hicklin has gender dysphoria, in which a person feels extreme distress because of a disconnect between their birth sex and gender identity. But in a blog posted on Lambda Legal’s website, Hicklin wrote that she felt she was a girl since she was very young. The Bureau of Justice Statistics estimates that there are 3,200 transgender inmates in the nation’s prisons and jails. nn

Appeal for relief for North Carolina transgender people RALEIGH, NC (AP) - Advocacy groups are asking an appeals court to expand a favorable ruling on transgender restroom access to cover people across North Carolina. Their move comes after a federal judge ruled preliminarily that two transgender students and an employee must be allowed to use restrooms matching their gender identity at University of North Carolina campuses. He’ll make his final decision after the case goes to trial in November. The advocacy groups said Monday the injunction is an important step, but they’re asking a federal appeals court to extend protections to all of North Carolina’s transgender residents. nn

Salem Police investigating explosion of LGBT newspaper box SALEM, MA--Police in Salem are investigating the detonation of an explosive placed inside a news box for an LGBT newspaper as a possible hate crime. The explosion of the Rainbow Times box along the Essex Street mall was reported early Tuesday. Police say it shook the downtown area and was heard up to a mile away. Capt. Conrad Prosniewski says police believe the box was specifically targeted. It reportedly has been vandalized nearly 10 times in the past. The Rainbow Times is marketed to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Publisher Gricel Ocasio says despite the past incidents with the box, the newspaper didn’t expect the situation to escalate this far. nn

Egyptian police using Grindr to hunt down LGBTs

CAIRO--The gay dating app Grindr is being utilized to find and detain members of the LGBT community in Cairo, according to sources following the activities of Egyptian police. While first reported on numerous gay blogging sites seeking to warn the LGBT community of the invasion of privacy, it was subsequently confirmed by the Jerusalem Post. According to lifestyle and entertainment magazine Cairo Scene, a source close to the city’s LGBT community claimed apps such as Grindr are “jeopardizing the safety” of many of their members. The unnamed source said authorities are using the technology to pinpoint the location of users. They said: “There have been a number of arrests in the last few months linked to these applications. “It is possible to tell a user’s position within a few hundred meters,” the source added. The personal photographs uploaded by users to their dating profiles makes them easily identifiable to police, it was reported. “It baffles me how easily people are willing to share such personal information in a country like Egypt - it is beyond stupid. “I would advise anyone to be careful when dating online.” Homosexuality is not banned in Egypt but members of the country’s LGBT population have reported experiencing hostility. In April, an Egyptian court sentenced 11 men accused of committing homosexual acts to terms of up to 12 years in jail on charges of “inciting debauchery”, the Jerusalem Post reported. Earlier this month Egypt’s grand mufti Shawki Allam said hurting gays and lesbians is “unacceptable”. nn

NEW LGBT HOMELESS SHELTER IN MANHATTAN NAMED AFTER BEA ARTHUR

NEW YORK—A new 18-bed LGBT homeless shelter in East Greenwich Village has been named the Bea Arthur Residence after the Golden Girls star. Due to open in February 2017, the home will provide shelter and counseling for the city’s homeless gay and transgender teens. Arthur was a lifetime supporter of LGBT rights and was a frequent contributor to the Ali Forney Center, the largest LGBT community center in the United States. Arthur, who died in 2009, bequeathed $300,000 in her will to the Ali Forney Center. “These kids at the Ali Forney Center are literally dumped by their families because of the fact that they are lesbian, gay or transgender,” Arthur told our sister publication Next before her death. “This organization really is saving lives.” nn

DOZENS OF HOMES HANG RAINBOW FLAGS AFTER GAY COUPLE TARGETED

NATICK, Mass. (AP) - Dozens of homes in Natick flew rainbow flags to show support for a gay couple who had their rainbow flag stolen and their front porch egged. Cari and Lauri Ryding hung the flag following the June massacre at a gay nightclub in Orlando. The women discovered the vandalism last week. A group of children on bicycles distributed rainbow flags to homes Sunday. More than 40 houses hung the flags on picket fences, garages, doorways and decks. The flags came from a local group that gives the flags away to area residents. Police have asked neighbors for information. There are currently no suspects. nn

Indiana OKs 6th needle exchange to curb HIV, hepatitis C

JEFFERSONVILLE, IN (AP) - Indiana’s health commissioner has declared a public health emergency in southern Indiana’s Clark County that allows local officials to start a needle-exchange to curb the spread of hepatitis C and HIV. Commissioner Dr. Jerome Adams declared the emergency Monday, making the county the sixth in Indiana to win permission for a needle-exchange following an HIV outbreak in southern Indiana linked to intravenous drug use. The five others are Fayette, Madison, Monroe, Scott and Wayne counties. Clark County spent eight months trying to work out problems with its initial needleexchange application. The county submitted a second application after ending talks with the Los Angeles-based AIDS Healthcare Foundation to pay for the program. County health Commissioner Kevin Burke says state health officials didn’t support how that foundation would have funded the program. nn

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Republican lawmaker and a son of Utah billionaire Jon Huntsman Sr. are among new board members of LGBTQ-rights group Equality Utah. Equality Utah announced Monday that Sen. Steve Urquhart and James Huntsman had been named to the organization’s Board of Directors. Urquhart, who is retiring from the Legislature, was the sponsor of Utah’s 2015 anti-discrimination law protecting gay and transgender people from being fired or denied housing. James Huntsman started film sales company Blue Fox Entertainment and spent 20 years at his father’s Huntsman Corporation. As a teenager in 1987, he was kidnapped at knifepoint from his driveway and forced to call his father to arrange a $1 million ransom. He was later rescued by FBI agents. Massachusetts prosecutor to give guidance on transgender law BOSTON (AP) - Guidance from Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey on the state’s new transgender rights law will include potential scenarios in which a person could face arrest for making an improper claim of gender identity. The law signed by Republican Gov. Charlie Baker last month extends anti-discrimination protections to public accommodations and allows transgender people to use bathrooms or locker rooms that correspond with their gender identity. The Legislature instructed Healey to provide guidance to businesses and law enforcement prior to full implementation of the measure Oct. 1. Lawmakers wanted Healey to include advice on how to deal with a hypothetical situation in which an individual falsely claims gender identity for the purpose of gaining access to an otherwise gender-segregated facility. Healey, a Democrat who strongly supported the bill, plans to submit her recommendations Thursday. A draft outline provided by aides said there have been few reports of improper claims in states that previously adopted protections for transgender people in public accommodations. Businesses therefore, would be advised

to presume that patrons are using the appropriate bathroom or locker room unless there is a compelling reason to believe otherwise. A person suspected of falsely claiming gender identity could be questioned on a limited basis, according to the outline. Businesses could remove a patron or call police in cases of illegal conduct such as loitering in public accommodations for the apparent intent of watching others; photographing or videotaping other patrons; or any kind of harassment or threats. Supporters of the new law note that in most cases such behavior already is illegal under state law regardless of gender identity. Critics of the law have suggested that male sexual predators could use the law as a pretext for entering women’s bathrooms or locker rooms. The Massachusetts Family Institute recently announced a signature drive that aims to place a question on the 2018 ballot calling for repeal of the law. Aides to Healey stressed that the attorney general was not asked to writes rules or regulations but only to offer guidance, which they said was developed after discussions with advocacy groups, business organizations and lawmakers. nn

Court: Gays can seek parental rights for nonbiological kids ALBANY, NY (AP) - New York’s highest court has expanded the definition of parenthood by ruling that former same-sex couples have the right to seek visitation and custody of children even when they aren’t the biological or adoptive parent. The Court of Appeals decision Tuesday resolves two cases of former same-sex couples in which the biological mothers kept the children and their ex-partners sought legal standing to see them. In one case, lower courts ruled the ex-partner had no standing. In the other, the ex-partner pays child support and was later granted visitation. The earlier definition of parenthood required a person seeking custody or visitation to have a biological or adoptive connection to the child. The Court of Appeals ruled that that standard had become “unworkable” in light of society’s “increasingly varied familial relationships.” nn

Jungwirth has a history of conflicts with previous employers, having had restraining orders taken out to prevent him for stalking in prior office settings. More recently, he has taken to using email and Facebook as a form of retaliation against those who would criticize him in any fashion. During the winter months, Jungwirth barely escaped criminal prosecution for fraud over his use of web pages advertising the BeachBear Weekend, to which he claimed ownership, and to which he was actively selling VIP passes as well as hotel packages at the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Beach Hotel. Unknown to those responding to his BeachBear Weekend offers was the fact that none of the events described or hotel accommodations were authentic. After being evicted from his apartment near the beach in Fort Lauderdale, Jungwirth disappeared from the area, with some reports of his return to Orlando where he had previously been employed. His latest reference to Wilton Manors suggests that he may

have returned to South Florida, though there have been no known spottings of the man. In what may be the latest irony in the Jungwirth saga, however, is the legal opinion that as horrible as they are, his latest spate of threats are not against the law. Rather, they are protected under Freedom of Speech in the Bill of Rights. In Elonis v. the United States, the Supreme Court decided last year that a man, Anthony Elonis, who made odious threats to kill his wife, was innocent of breaking the law. “Federal criminal liability generally does not turn solely on the results of an act without considering the defendant’s mental state,” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the majority, explaining that the court overturned the case because the government never proved that Elonis had threatening intent. Whether Jungwirth’s intent to massacre gays in Wilton Manors is authentic remains to be seen. The answer lies on the other side of Labor Day weekend. nn

I’ve never been one deeply moved by hip-hop music. Just ask my husband, who thinks hip-hop is essential to every task from washing clothes to reading the Bible. (Thank you Jesus.) And so when I was motivated by my husband to listen to Frank Ocean’s new album Blonde, I cannot be blamed for hesitating to cooperate. It was only after I discovered that his moBY tivation took RICHARD the form of HACK withholding sex that I reconsidered listening to Mr. Ocean’s Blonde. I was not yet aware that the album had debuted at Number One on the Billboard charts. I knew it was highly anticipated, of course. It had been four years, after all, since his first album blast onto the music scene with such adulation that even I could not ignore it. Channel Orange was a blend of soul, R&B and hip hop, a fusion that certainly got my attention, if only for its uniqueness. Frank Ocean’s lyrics peel back layers of emotions that are so normally in place that you feel they are essential. Or, at least, they are essential until he removes them and you feel exposed and liberated at the same

time. It’s like what happens when you have a good cry—in public. There’s a certain humiliation about the experience but at the end of the day, you feel pretty doggone good about yourself. And so it is with Frank Ocean. In addition to the lyrics, which are always supposed to say something meaningful and poignant, there is the unexpected music—some of which is so unobtrusive that it becomes soothing background music. And even when Frank finally sings his first line, it’s almost a whisper compared to other hip-hop artists’ hostility—jamming and pushing their curse words and crushed grammar down our throats as if we have no choice to accept it. Well, I have a choice, and I’ve, more often than not, refused to accept such trash as art. But this-this Blonde--art is art. I guess I should have known that I would have a bond with this singer/songwriter/performer/ lover. I had forgotten that years ago Ocean had admitted via Tumblr about the moment he realized that he was in love with a man. It was an outpouring so heart wrenching in its purity that I should have seen the genius inside at that moment. “4 summers ago, I met somebody. I was 19 years old. ,” he wrote. “We spent that summer, and the summer after, together. Everyday almost. And on the days we were together, time would glide. Most of the day I’d see him, and his smile. I’d hear

his conversation and his silence…until it was time to sleep. Sleep I would often share with him. “By the time I realized I was in love, it was malignant. It was hopeless. There was no escaping, no negotiating with the feeling. No choice. It was my first love, it changed my life. “Back then, my mind would wander to the women I had been with, the ones I cared for and thought I was in love with. I reminisced about the sentimental songs I enjoyed when I was a teenager.. The ones I played when I experienced a girlfriend for the first time. I realized they were written in a language I did not yet speak. I realized too much, too quickly. Imagine being thrown from a plane. I wasn’t in a plane though. I was in a Nissan Maxima, the same car I packed up with bags and drove to Los

Angeles in. “I sat there and told my friend how I felt. I wept as the words left my mouth. I grieved for them, knowing I could never take them back for myself. He patted my back. He said kind things. He did his best, but he wouldn’t admit the same. He had to go back inside soon, it was late and his girlfriend was waiting for him upstairs.” I’m told that Frank Ocean has made $1 million from Blonde since its release only days ago. It’s always strange to me to hear people talk about the “gay agenda.” Because undoubtably anyone who uses this term is anti-gay. First of all, it’s important to remember that having an agenda isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Like when your boss asks you, “So, what’s on your agenda today?” she isn’t asking you what subversive things you’re planning on doing to ruin the company. That said, the “LGBT community” is a misnomer. In reality, people who fall under the umbrella of LGBT are incredibly diverse in every way. There is no one thing that everyone agrees on, except maybe a desire to be treated fairly and equally under the law (though there’s no doubt far less consensus once you start talking about how to get there and what to do). Which is why Americans For Truth About Homosexuality President Peter LaBarbera’s Aug. 19 “report” for Accuracy in Media, an organization that isn’t actually interested in accuracy so much as paranoid that the “liberal media” is out to get them, is so ridiculous. In “Media Myths of the Homosexual-Transgender Agenda,” LaBarbera writes, “The purpose of this report is to expose and refute some of the longstanding statistical 14

lies and propagandistic myths of the LGBT … activist movement. With media support, homosexual and leftist activists now openly campaign to banish dissenting conservative voices. This dangerous dynamic gives the homosexualtransgender lobby nearly full rein to advance its agenda.” Ha. “Banish dissenting conservative voices,” eh? If he means that we think people who espouse the belief that LGBT people aren’t human and are incapable of love and unworthy of life don’t deserve TV air time and shouldn’t be a reporter’s go-to for an opposing viewpoint on every article about any LGBT issue, then yes, banish them. Let them assemble their banished selves in the dark realm of a place like Accuracy in Media or Americans For Truth About Homosexuality. LaBarbera’s “report” doesn’t really offer anything new. It’s more like a “greatest hits” of anti-LGBT talking points: nobody’s born gay, sex-reassignment is mutilation, anti-gay reparative therapy works, homos die young, LGBT people make bad parents, etc. But what I’m most interested in is what he calls “The 10% Myth.” LaBarbera tries to get to the bottom of just how many LGBT people there are in the U.S. The rough figure of 10% has been bandied

about for years. LaBarbera writes, “The 10 percent myth served its purpose of projecting enormous ‘gay’ political strength when the movement was still weak.” In other words, the LGBT movement was just pretending to be 10% of the population for the political clout. And we all know that preceding to exist is a totally sound political strategy. LaBarbera then throws out some other much smaller numbers eventually coming to the claim that LGBT people are about 3% of the population. To which I say, “Who cares?” Who cares what the percentage is? It’s not an easily ascertained or verifiable number. It’s as if LaBarbera is arguing that once a minority falls below a specific percentage then it’s okay to declare them inhuman. And he is. Because for LaBarbera, LGBT people are inhuman. That is, in fact, the cornerstone philosophy of his hateful organization Americans For Truth About Homosexuality. The very name implies that homosexuals are liars; that homosexuality is something to be exposed as evil. Then again, until we know the exact percentage of the U.S. population who are members of LaBarbera’s little club, how can we even be sure they even exist at all? nn

WHO IS? Gay In America Same-sex marriage is one of the fastest-moving social issues in U.S. history, having become legal in state after state as Americans cheer it in ever-growing numbers. But one thing is slightly off-kilter: Americans seem to have absolutely no idea just how many of their fellow citizens are lesbians or gay men. In fact, they think that 23 percent of Americans, or almost one in four, are gays or lesbians, a Gallup survey revealed in 2015. That’s way off: The polling organization most recently found that less than 4 percent self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. Several gay, lesbian, bisexual, and even transgender characters have become prominent in recent years on TV shows such as “Modern Family,” “Scandal,” “Degrassi,” and “Glee,” as well as in movies including “Brokeback Mountain” and the Academy Awardwinning biopic “The Imitation Game.” The conclusion is with the LGBT community becoming so mainstream, it has produced an individual idea that there are more fellow LGBT citizens then there actually are. NGLCC HOLDS 13TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE PALM SPRINGS--The 13th annual National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce Conference was held in Palm Desert, California at the JW Marriott Resort last week. One thousand participants from the United States, Canada, Central America, South America, and other world ports attended. The Conference, which lasted four days, started with a plenary session as nationally acclaimed LGBT business leaders spoke about the growth of LGBT businesses, becoming vital to the economic engine of the United States: Eugene Cornelius, Deputy Association Administrator of the Small Business Administration; Bob Witeck, president of Witeck Communications, a pioneer in gay public relations and an early advocate of LGBT inclusion spoke about the history and advancement of gay rights within corporations; Aaron Walton, an out gay black man, spoke eloquently about the commitment to seeing messages of equality getting out to both the black and LGBT communities from Lexus, and the success of those campaigns; and Heidi Lehmann, ResponsiveAds Inc., spoke about connecting businesses together and “dancing with everyone “ at least once to get to the right person and make the sale. Breakout sessions covered many business topics and Chamber of Commerce issues, giving attendees the opportunity to 16

face each other and learn about business developments, changes, opportunities and more. An evening reception sponsored by Delta Air Lines, Caesars Entertainment, and the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority was well attended and received. Luncheon the next day featured a conversation with and performance by the legendary singer-songwriter Melissa Etheridge. Her down home style of speaking, earthy and honest talk brought the audience to laughter and to tears. When she told the story of a song she wrote, just after the Pulse Nightclub disaster, and how she brought it to rehearsal at a NYC sound studio, and on to the internet in 72 hours, one got the true power of Melissa and the depth of her commitment to the LGBT community as a symbol of strength. When she sang the song, “Pulse,” dry eyes were hard to find in the audience. In the afternoon, checks were awarded by Wells Fargo Bank to numerous Chambers for their growth, fine work and dedication to certifying LGBT businesses. Locally, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce received a $5,000 grant to launch its “Business Connect” program; and the Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chambers received a $10,000 check to expand a program to foster development, growth, and sustainability of certified LGBT business enterprises. nn

SACRED RAINBOW PEOPLE Most of us have probably heard of the biblical story of Joseph and his multi-colored coat. If we don’t remember the story from a religious upbringing, we almost certainly are familiar with the Tim Rice/Andrew Lloyd Weber musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (based on the biblical story of Joseph, a young dreamer). By Rev. In the biblical Durrell story, Joseph is one of many siblings, but he Watkins is also the parental favorite. His father gives him a gift – a beautiful coat that features many colors. Artwork based on the story often shows the coat looking like a wearable rainbow. Joseph’s siblings were annoyed that Joseph rated such a snazzy gift and they allowed petty jealousy to cause them to plot against Joseph. According the story, they actually sold their

younger brother into slavery and told their father that he had been killed. The rainbow coat was a sign of favor, but it also made Joseph different, even special, and for that Joseph was singled out and abused. Joseph dealt with his adversity as best he could. In slavery, he was promoted, but then he was imprisoned. In prison, he managed to stand out, and eventually was released and even became successful in politics. In time, he was able to use his political position to help people, including the family that earlier abandoned him to a life of hardship. The Joseph story is a wonderful allegory for Rainbow People everywhere. We in the Queer community know what it is like to be different, and special. We understand what it means to be unique, and gifted, and able to achieve great things in spite of having endured cruelty. We have had ups and downs, and sometimes, we have proven to be more gracious than those who wrote us off or who tried to erase our stories or assault our dignity. Our same-gender love and attraction or our gender non-conformity is a special gift, a sign of

being different and at the same time specially blessed; our sexual orientation or gender identity is our coat of favor which shows we are part of the rainbow diversity of life. That specialness has made us targets for some, but even with all the ups and downs of being a targeted and oppressed group, we have proven to be resilient, creative, loving, and utterly fabulous! I love that the rainbow has become a symbol of our beautiful community. Our rainbow flag is our coat of many colors, our sign that we are special, we are blessed, we are fully embraced by the loving Presence many of us call “God.” Like Joseph, our path hasn’t always been easy, but it has made us strong, wise, and at our best, compassionate and dedicated to making a positive difference in the world. The next time you see a rainbow flag, I hope you will think of it as a sign that you are gifted by the Universe, and that you are indeed a gift from the Universe to the world. The prophet Ezekiel imagined God this way: “As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord…” (KJV). Rainbow People are made in the image of the Rainbow God. We are the world’s Sacred Rainbow People! nn

5 Steps to More Powerful Strength Training

Fall is just around the corner, so why not take advantage of a new season to revamp your workouts? It’s essential every 3 or 4 months to assess your progress if you really desire to achieve your best possible body. Strip down, look in the mirror, weigh yourself, take your measurements and be honest. Whether you’re pleased with the results, or realize you’ve got some work to do, forge ahead realizing you’ve got the potential to improve and redefine not only that physique, but your overall health as well! Here are my five favorite strength training strategies that are guaranteed to produce substantial results!

POWERFUL HELPFUL TIPS FIRST, a strong, fit and sexy body is the result of a threefold approach: weight training, effective cardio-vascular training, and sound nutrition. Neglect any one of these and your success will be compromised. You simply can’t preserve healthy muscle tissue and build lean new muscle without doing regular weight training. Hit the weights at least 2 to 3 times a week, if not more. Doing regular cardio (3 to 4 times per week for 30 – 45 minutes) is the best way to improve the longevity of your heart and lungs. It will also rev up your metabolism and help you burn fat. Finally, you can lift tons of weights and run miles of cardio, but unless you eat wisely, all your hard work in the gym will yield, at best, disappointing returns. Beef up your breakfast and eat much less at night; eat smaller meals (5 – 6) every 2 to 3 hours throughout the day as opposed to 1 or 2 monster feedings; opt for high protein meals with healthy low glycemic index, high energy carbs. SECONDLY, remember that for strength training, free weights are your best bet. A barbell and a rack of dumbbells are all you need for an effective resistance training workout that will help you build muscle, increase flexibility and burn calories. Remember, nothing beats the squat, bench press, deadlift, and shoulder press with a barbell for building overall mass and strength.

Perform assistance moves like curls, chest flies, lateral and front shoulder raises, etc. by moving on down that rack of trusty dumbbells. THIRDLY, take time to journal your workouts. List exercises, sets, repetitions and the outcome of each training session. Keep track of your weights, your best lifts, and the most reps you’ve performed on each exercise. Be consistent and honest with your documentation and strive to improve at least a little with each workout. FOURTHLY, never over-train and always maintain impeccable lifting form with each exercise. Keep workouts to under an hour of one or two intense lifts (squat, bench press, shoulder press, deadlift) and three or four assistance lifts (curls, side raises, triceps push-downs, etc.) in order to take advantage of hormonal surges of testosterone and human growth hormone. With each press, lift, or raise, maintain perfect form. FIFTHLY, make sure to have fun and enjoy yourself! When you’re in the gym, vary your routine by trying new weight training exercises, jump on board new cardio machines, sign up for novel classes… anything, just to keep exercising fresh. On your days off from the gym, stay active by walking, swimming, or rollerblading outside and you’re bound to meet new people and make new connections. nn

Trumping Ignorance The 21st International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2016) took place in Durban, South Africa. The conference brought together more than 15,000 of the brightest minds and strongest spirits in the HIV community.

It’s a shame Donald Trump hasn’t said anything horrible during this campaign about people with HIV. Earlier this summer, as thousands descended on Cleveland, Ohio, to mark the controversial ascension of a presidential candidate whose campaign went viral and consumed one of humanity’s most powerful political parties, a very different group of thousands gathered halfway around the world to mark the controversial ascension of efforts to eliminate one of the most devastating viruses humanity has ever known. During the same week as the Republican National Convention in July, the 21st International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2016) took place in Durban, South Africa. Occurring just once every 22

two years in a different international city, the conference brings together more than 15,000 of the brightest minds and strongest spirits in the HIV community – a diverse mix of researchers, activists, policymakers and others who are on the front lines of the global effort to prevent HIV and improve the health of people already living with the virus. The meeting came at a critical time, as the fight against HIV has reached a turning point: We have the means to (gradually) obliterate HIV from our species, and we even have an increasingly accepted plan to get there. What we don’t seem to have a lot of is political will, funding or widespread popular support. In a reflection of this reality, here in the U.S.,

mainstream media set up camp at the political buffet in Cleveland and gorged itself on the fastfood bonanza of the Republican convention. AIDS 2016 was largely ignored, the health-conscious restaurant left to languish in an era when reckless abandon seems to be the flavor of the day. Yet the conference had its fair share of tasty news – the kind of stuff that can fundamentally change opinions about HIV and the people living with it. For instance: We learned that almost 80,000 HIV-negative people in the U.S. are now regularly taking PrEP. (short for “pre-exposure prophylaxis,” a daily pill that virtually ensures a person won’t become HIV positive if taken correctly) We learned that PrEP is so effective, people ap-

pear to remain largely protected from HIV even if they only take the drug about once every two days. We were reminded that people with HIV who are on effective antiHIV medications have almost zero chance of passing the virus on to someone else. So convincing is the science on this that Demetre Daskalakis, M.D., one of the top HIV/AIDS officials in New York City (which is still home to more than 100,000 people living with HIV), recently endorsed a major new statement from experts publicly affirming that HIV-positive people have a “negligible risk” of transmitting HIV if they’re on meds and their viral load has been undetectable for the past six months. In other words, we now know that people with HIV in the U.S. are almost completely uninfectious if they’re on successful treatment – and we also know that people without HIV can almost completely guarantee they’ll avoid infection if they take PrEP. Remind me again why there are still such stringent restrictions on gay men who want to donate blood, and why HIV-positive people continue to receive lengthy prison sentences simply for having consensual sex with HIV-negative people? Remind me why a person’s HIV status still renders them a pariah across huge swaths of this country?

ting the power of HIV prevention in the hands of more people become bogged down in a morass of moralism, bigotry and budget wrangling. Heck, I still meet people who are surprised that people with HIV can live long, healthy lives while taking a single pill once a day – even though that’s been the case for a decade now. From a practical standpoint, managing HIV today is little different from managing high cholesterol, and a person on successful HIV treatment is roughly as likely to transmit the virus as a person on successful statins is to transmit an elevated LDL. But the perception of HIV in our society remains frustratingly entrenched in an ignorant past. Even as the science moves farther and farther from the rhetoric, fear and ignorance remain the driving forces behind America’s understanding of HIV – in much the same way they have been the driving forces behind so much of this year’s presidential campaign. It’s almost enough to make the dark, cynical side of my soul wish that Donald Trump would say something outlandish about people with HIV, in hopes that his explosive words would catalyze a wave of productive discussion and education about preventing and treating the virus. But I wouldn’t wish that kind of attention on anyone. Instead, I remain hopeful that reason and compassion will win

How is it that, in an age where it takes mere moments for popular anger to sweep the nation when an angry old man questions the patriotism of parents of a Muslim-American war hero, we’re still struggling 35 years later to sweep the nation with accurate, tolerant messaging about HIV? Instead, the tremendous successes of scientific advances like PrEP – or another highly effective form of virus prevention, clean needle exchange – are met with skepticism, as practical discussions about put-

out in our country’s conversation about HIV. Publications like the one you’re reading right now help spread that hope and ensure that conversation happens. Let me start this week with a fun fact about you and me: We are all social and, no matter how fervently some will deny it, we crave acceptance. Not by everyone, of course. I, for example, take no issue in being left out of fantasy football leagues (or terrorist cells). Generally speaking, we want people to like us. Were this not the case, we’d make no sacrifices for our friends, and their charity towards us would dry up. Nor would we likely find By partners, Justin keep decent jobs, or dress Jones the way we do. Even those who consider themselves “outsiders” living on the fringe aim to find solidarity: The fringe “community” wouldn’t exist were there no “community” with which to so label it. That we are inherently social creatures is a good thing (it’s gotten our species this far). But some take the license too far—some feel that they MUST be liked by everyone. The cliché is to label these types as “People-Pleasers,” but I prefer to call them “douchebags.” If you MUST be liked by everyone (and sometimes it’s hard not feeling that way), there are two possible routes: 1) You lose all personality traits—and ticks—that might be considered even mildly controversial (and thus affect a bland, lukewarm personality); or, 2) You become a disingenuous chameleon whose personality is lost behind all

the masks you wear. Whatever route you chose, you are not being “you,” and so failure is the eventual end. If you wish to be liked by everyone, you must dedicate the rest your life to it. You must never speak out of turn (unless present-company enjoys it). You must act with high regard to even those with whom you disagree (unless a challenge is what they’re after). You must place the considerations of others above your own, and give reverence to others’ wishes or expectations—even with trivialities (small things build with time, you know). And in all of this, at every turn, you will be met with dilemmas, such as when you’re faced with two or more people who have wildly different expectation—situations from which you must always excuse yourself, or else risk being exposed as a social deceiver. XXX Yes, your goal must be to please everyone all the time, either through proactive forms of lying (“OMG—I love all the same things you love!”), or total complacency. And despite all your “best” efforts, you will still fail. There will be instances when you disappoint your “friends,” no matter how hard you try. Even more devastating to People-Pleasers are those annoyingly “perceptive” people who see through your veil and dislike you for allowing your “self” to slip away into an endless existence of catering to the sensibilities of others. A Public Service Announcement to People Pleasers: Nobody pays your bills! Be yourself if you want to find people who LOVE you, not pity you. (I’m Justin Jones, and I approve of this message.). nn

THE SECRET RECIPE

BAKED SALMON

What to do with your leftover tropical fruits? The mango still sitting in your fruit and vegetable drawer and the pineapple chunks left over from your fab Sunday Funday brunch need a purpose. This simple baked salmon will delight and amaze guests with very little effort. If you have a convection oven and haven’t given it a whirl, this recipe will showcase the benefits of circulating air to keep the temperature steady. Ingredients: 1 whole filet of salmon (farm raised) 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil ½ teaspoon sea salt 1 cup diced mango ½ cup diced pineapple (or other tropical or citrus fruit) Directions: Set your Convection oven to Bake 400 Degrees Coat a stone baking sheet with extra virgin olive oil. Cover entire sheet all corners. Try to use just 1 tablespoon. Lightly spread olive oil on skin and lay salmon filet skin side down on Pile chopped mango and chopped pineapple on top of salmon. The fruit should cover the entire filet. Dice more fruit to cover if needed. Pour remaining olive oil over fruit and salt with ½ teaspoon sea salt. Convection cook for 18 minutes on 400 degrees Remove filet and slice down the middle. If uncooked (raw throughout slice), return to oven for 5 more minutes. If the center of the cut is rare but the sides of the slice are cooked, remove from oven and let sit for 5 minutes. Slice and serve with baked fruit on top, skin will remain in the pan. The combination of the fruit and the convection baking makes this the moistest salmon dish you have ever experienced. Convection ovens create a dry atmosphere so the fruits will slightly brown but the fish will main moist. This summer dish is best served at room temperature with stove top couscous. This plant is a must for all gardeners who want wonderful fragrance in their gardens. The gardenia plant is adaptable to growing in pots or directly in the soil. The plant generally does not grow over 6 ‘ in height but can grow 4 ‘ in width. It will grow in partial to full sun and grows well in an acid soil. The cut flowers make a beautiful centerpiece by floating them in a low crystal bowl.

ardens can be multidimensional in nature since we have color texture, and size of specimen plants in our garden so why not consider a dimension often overlooked: Fragrance. There are several plants that will give everlasting fragrance that can be planted in South Florida. Below, I have listed several plants that one should consider when selecting amazing fragrances:

(S. Floribunda) Also known as the Madeguascar Jasmine or The Hawaiian Wedding Flower. Stephenotis is a vine without tendrils so it needs a trellis to obtain a beautiful growth. We are fortunate to grow this plant in South Florida as it loves the hot temperatures and humidity of our summers to bloom. The very fragrant tubular white flowers are often used by florists particularly in wedding bouquets. When not in flower, the beautiful glossy green leaves are beautiful. The plant requires a well-balanced fertilizer and adequate moisture at all times to grow well.

Angel Trumpet

(Brugmansia) The angel trumpet refers to the large, multi-pendulous flowers that come in many colors including yellow, white and pinks. I suggest growing the small trees or shrubs in the background of other plants since they can grow to 15-18 feet. They often shed their foliage throughout the year and may go semi-dormant during colder temperatures. They require full sun to grow and bloom to their full potential. They are not salt tolerant so I would advise not planting them near the ocean. The fragrance is particularly strong in the evening.

Sweet Almond Bush

(Aloysia virgata) This bush is one of my favorite plants that will perfume your entire garden for the whole year. This is an excellent droughttolerant plant particularly good for butterfly gardens. This plant can be planted in sun or part shade, and can be pruned easily for a more uniform look.

Night Blooming Jasmine

(Cestrum nocturtum) This is one of my favorite shrubs that can be planted in sun or partial shade. The fragrance is very strong so when planted in your garden, the neighbors will also enjoy it. The white greenish tubular flowers appear on the new growth and open up during the evening. While it can grow to 10-12 feet in height, it can be pruned to lessen the height of the plant. Let’s not forget that certain herbs that can be planted in front of your border or in pots near the entrance to your garden. I particularly like selected basil, rosemary and mint plants. I purposely rub against them in the garden to obtain their wonderful delightful fragrances. Certain Cattleya and Oncidium orchid plants are also odoriferous. I will write more about herbs and orchid plants in future columns. Many of the plants listed above are generally available at nurseries and garden centers in the area. ENTERTAINMENT Get ready for Oscar season’s black gay coming-of-age film, Moonlight

Quick, name more than one queer-themed movie with a black cast that made any noise outside of the LGBT film festival circuit in all the years since Paris is Burning. If you said Pariah and then got kind of stuck, well, that’s not your fault. That’s all about to change a little more for the better with the black, gay, coming-of-age drama Moonlight. Based on Tarell Alvin McCraney’s play, In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue, the film version (from writer-director Barry Jenkins and producer Brad Pitt) stars up-and-comer Trevante Rhodes as a young black man in 1980s Miami struggling with queer identity and the rigid codes of traditional masculinity. Early buzz is very positive, the trailer looks lovely, and the reviews will be in soon enough when it premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival. Theatrical release happens Oct. 21, just in time for awards season.

Don’t get too excited. It’s not a woman she’s necessarily looking for. But extremely cool lesbian actress Sarah Paulson will still flirt with love in this fall’s indie drama Blue Jay. Written by, and co-starring, Mark Duplass, and directed by first-time filmmaker Alex Lehmann (who also worked on Duplass’ sitcom, The League), Blue Jay is the story of two middle-aged people returning to their tiny California hometown. They were high-school sweethearts, now grown apart, and their meeting provides an opportunity to look at the past and come to some decisions about their mutually unhappy present. And we’re just going to assume that it’s all set in the very small community of Blue Jay, California, population approximately 2000. If it’s not, then we will have been wrong for the very first time. The film premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival and opens theatrically in October.

The CW’s digital platform, CW Seed, is introducing a gay superhero into the network’s successful DC Universe. The animated series Freedom Fighters: The Ray, from producer Greg Berlanti (The Broken Hearts Club) will premiere sometime in 2017 and will mark the first time a queer superhero has headlined a series. The character, Raymond Terrell, is a reporter who uncovers a secret project meant to turn light into a weapon of mass destruction. Exposed to the active element in the project, Ray develops light-based powers he uses to battle evil and injustice. The voice actor cast as the animated version of Ray will also appear in live action form in the CW’s Flash-Arrow universe It’s all about interconnection these days, y’all, and it’s about time we had a gay superhero to join at least one of the ever-expanding power teams. Freak Show, the YA novel by former club kid James St. James – whose book, Disco Bloodbath, was turned into the film Party Monster – is, as you might know, on its way to the big screen. It’s the story of a boldly gender-nonconforming teenager who decides to run for Prom Queen of his conservative Florida high school. Early casting included Bette Midler and AnnaSophia Robb, and now British actor Alex Lawther – who played young Alan Turing in The Imitation Game – will step into the main role of Billy Bloom. Additionally, the cast now includes Abigail Breslin and Laverne Cox. That’s good news in a very real way; when you’ve got trans actors and/or other creatives on a project like this, there’s less opportunity to get it wrong. We’re looking forward to this one getting it right.

HUGH Looks Like a Lady F

or more than 20 years as a leading man, rom-com vet Hugh Grant has been the object of many actresses’ (and, yes, even some actors’) affection. But get this: He’s also been an actress himself. As a kid, the actor’s feminine features earned him numerous lady roles in plays he and his classmates performed at London’s all-male Wetherby School. “This was a necessity,” he says of his gender-bending days. “It was dictated that some of us had to become little actresses and, yes, I was particularly moving as Brigitta von Trapp, one of the von Trapp daughters, in The Sound of Music.” The role, he enthusiastically notes, entailed a full-on drag transformation, with your mom’s ’90s movie crush “in a white dress with a blue satin sash.” You’re thinking: Is this really the same Hugh Grant who charmed Julia Roberts as a bookshop owner in 1999’s Notting Hill? Who was Sandra Bullock’s pompous boss-turnedlover in Two Weeks Notice? Who famously played Daniel Cleaver and swept Renée Zellweger off her feet in Bridget Jones’s Diary? Who danced down a set of stairs to The Pointer Sisters’ “Jump for My Love” in Love Actually and then won over Natalie (Martine McCutcheon) and everyone who wished they were Natalie? (Hey, that dance scene was epic.)

Yup, same Hugh. Because before becoming the lady’s man he was, well, the lady. “In my teenage years, I was very girly,” Grant says, “I remember when I used to go on a French exchange in Paris and all the locals called me ‘mademoiselle’ because they thought I was a girl.” Did his femininity ever call into question his sexuality? He ponders before settling on a response. “No. They just thought I was a girl. I looked like a girl, let’s face it. I had long, very dodgy ’70s hair.” Fast forward 40 years and “I look like a scrotum now,” he zings. Yes, folks: Tell your mom that Hugh Grant thinks his face looks like a man’s genitals. When I assure him that his face is not scrotum-like, he replies in his dainty English accent, “Very well. Thank you for cheering me up.” Whether he truly agrees is uncertain, but now 55, the actor’s self-proclaimed ball-sac face makes a welcome return to the big screen in Florence Foster Jenkins. The actor portrays shoddy actor St. Clair Bayfield, who lets his equally-untalented wife, the film’s eponymous Florence, a well-intentioned socialite, believe she can sing. According to the Oscar-bound dramedy, which is loosely based on the real-life Jenkins,

ENTERTAINMENT their marriage was open, and after tucking Jenkins into bed, Bayfield spent his nights getting frisky with a much younger woman. “I think it’s certainly possible to love – to properly love – different people in different ways simultaneously,” he says. Suddenly realizing that statement is essentially a summary of his own romantic life, Grant unleashes a tickled laugh. “I’ve always been an advocate of that, and sometimes I think the only reason (director) Stephen Frears thought of me for this part was, he thought, ‘OK, who do I know who has a very unorthodox domestic life? Oh, Hugh.’” I joke that the film, then, is a documentary. He snickers and playfully agrees. The film’s subversive nature, he adds, may “speak particularly to the LGBT community.” The topic of open relationships – or any union that breaks tradition, really – is one Grant’s clearly interested in speaking about, so he gladly elaborates: “I felt like the script and the film was kind of a celebration of unorthodoxy and of the very strange shapes that we fall into in life, in ourselves and in our relationships. It’s all great as long it’s done with passion and love, and so yeah, I think that’s what the film is.” He’s not done with his telling discourse, fortunately. “I’ve never really understood why people should think men and women or men and men or women and women have to be in 40-year monogamous relationships and that that’s the natural state of human beings, because I’m pretty damn sure it isn’t,” Grant insists. “I think it’s just a social norm or the ghost of a religious norm being passed down, and I’m not entirely sure it’s a recipe for happiness.” The same could be said about Maurice, Grant’s 1987 film that brought the actor closer to the queer community after he

portrayed Clive, a repressed gay man living in early 20th-century England. As Grant puts it, “My character ends up married and smug with a mustache, but you can tell everything is being bottled up.” To this day, the movie is held in high regard, mentioned alongside Torch Song Trilogy and My Own Private Idaho in Steven Paul Davies’ book Out at the Movies: A History of Gay Cinema as well as in Alonso Duralde’s 101 Must See Movies for Gay Men. For Grant, its legacy within the LGBT community is a revelation. “I didn’t realize that it had that status!” he says, laughing. “But I’m very pleased that it does, and I’m sure that (the book’s author) E. M. Forster would be very pleased that it does. After all, it was a novel he wrote and kept under his bed for many years, and it was only published after

his death because he was too nervous of the law to publish it during his lifetime. I think he’d be pleased that it’s struck a chord now.” Several gay roles followed Maurice, including Grant’s turn as a gay director in the obscure backstage tragicomedy An Awfully Big Adventure, released a year after his big rom-com break in 1994’s Four Weddings and a Funeral. Earlier, in 1991’s TV movie Our Sons, the actor played Julie Andrews’ son James, the lover of an AIDS-stricken man. Reflecting on his gay roles from the late ’80s to the early ’90s, a time when taking on such parts could be considered taboo, he says, “Maybe it was considered fractionally more daring to do that, but it didn’t feel daring to me.” Though LGBT-themed narratives have thankfully evolved beyond AIDS as a death sentence

(because it’s not) and forbidden love (because it doesn’t have to be), Grant contemplates whether an out gay actor could rule the same genre he did for over two decades. Is the world ready for a gay Grant? “We’ve had straight men playing gay men in romantic situations, but I’m struggling to think of an out gay actor playing a straight relationship in a highprofile film,” the actor says. Grant doesn’t come up with any names because they don’t exist.
