Guy Tunes By GRANT JAMES
Nicki Minaj: “Freedom”
Nicki Minaj is really pushing “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded,” her second studio album. Clearly, the TrinidadianAmerican singer is still attached to her debut album’s name (“Pink Friday”—hello). Now she is re-releasing the album (with eight new songs) as “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded - The Re-Up.” At the MTV VMA’s, she announced that “Re-Up” will re-lease on November 19, and she told BBC Radio 1 that it contains the best material she has ever released. On her track “Freedom,” Nicki demands, “When I retire, tell ’em ‘think pink.’” This rich, ethereal track showcases the rapper’s talents, while offering a softer, more focused direction.
Ciara: “Get Me Good”
The newest single from Ciara, entitled “Get Me Good,” doesn’t explore any new territory, and it doesn’t exactly stick. The track, produced by Darkchild (who has previously worked with Britney Spears, Destiny’s Child, Brandy, and Mary J. Blige, to name a few), is a bit of a letdown—considering the 27-year-old performer has netted eight Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 singles, including a number one—and hopefully doesn’t reflect the material from her upcoming album, “One Woman Army,” which is set for a 2013 release.
Charli XCX featuring Brooke Candy: “Cloud Aura”
Up-and-coming British pop singer Charli XCX has released an usual track featuring guest raps from everybody’s favorite “contemporary muse”, Brooke Candy. You may

guy magazine
remember Candy as the chrome plated, pink haired oddity in the video for Grimes’ “Genesis”, but here she steps out of the role of muse, opting to take a stab at rapping instead. Her rhymes need some work (“you were my Chris Brown, I was your only girl”), but a breathy chorus from Charli isn’t completely wasted here.
The Wanted: “I Found You”
Boy-band fans will be pleased to know (and hear) that The Wanted has followed up their “Chasing The Sun” with new single “I Found You,” which was released on November 5. The new track from the BritIrish group—whose members possess an average age of 22.4 years old—doesn’t exactly fill the shoes of “Chasing the Sun,” but it still features some memorable spots, especially for those with a weakness for post-teens.
Vitalic: “Stamina”
Electronic artist Vitalic’s lead single (“Stamina”) from his newly released LP “Rave Age” is a deep, dark, ballsy beast of a track. Better known to UK and European audiences than those in the US, the French-born producer/artist consistently cranks out danceable hits, and “Stamina” is no exception. The music video has a weight-loss-centric theme, lasering on the cultural obsessions with food and fitness. It won’t exactly restructure your eating habits (shout out to the cast of Cheeseburgers Wearing Suits), but it will definitely get you moving.

the SCENE

‘Hipster Disney Princesses’ Welcome “Star Wars’” Princess Leia to the Clique
Help! to the Chief What is up with the aging Curse of the Presidency? At THE SCENE, we’re not so sure we did President Obama any favors by sending him back to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. for 4-more-years. Don’t misunderstand: We’re down with the saltand-pepper-lishous-ness of Daddy-Hotties like George Clooney, Antonio Banderas, and Denzel Washington. But the Highest Office in the Land takes a toll like no other gig (I mean, we live in a world with Ozzy Osbourne, for goodness sake, so we know wreckage when we see it) and tends to make its occupants go—quickly!—from National Daddy-in-Chief to What-The-Hell-Happened-ToHim?!?!? Obama was 47 when he won his first term in 2008. Oh what a dif an Olympiad—that’s 4 years, Slick—makes. And it’s not just Obama: From Bush-43, to Bill Clinton, and back even farther, the Presidency is no place for a twink who wants to keep his skin looking sweet. Check the Presidential wrecks for yourself:
The team that brought the viral “Fifty Shades of Grey the Musical” to YouTube and beyond has whipped up a hilarious video bitch-slap to three easy targets: Hipsters, Princesses, and Disney. Hipster Disney Princesses takes a poke at the self-absorbed, self-important anti-trendy set, with bespectacled versions of Disney staples Ariel, Aurora, Belle, Cinderella, and Snow White rejecting the quotidian—but loving them some sushi—in a musical that has scored sixdigit-hits on YouTube over the past week. These hipster-chicks can’t be bothered with the hyped and the mainstreamed, but they are all about the pout, and the pose, deriding the wearing of glass slippers after midnight, and the like. With the purchase by the Mouse of Lucasfilms (the creators of the “Star Wars” franchise), the Posing Princesses are welcoming to their set Princess Leia, the bun-headed, laser-wielding mamma from the Galaxy Far, Far Away. Their two-cents to their new sorority sister: Perfect your ‘bitch-face’ and hyperdramatize everything (the same advice my Dad gave me on my wedding day).

Olympic Pioneer
Greg Louganis
is “Back on Board” for ‘Pride of the Ocean’ LGBT Film Festival Olympic gold medalist Greg Louganis will screen a special sneak preview of the new documentary, “Back on Board Greg Louganis,” on the Pride of the Ocean—the first and only LGBT film festival at sea—which sails from Seattle to Alaska’s Glacier Bay in August 2013. Louganis and director Cheryl Furjanic will be the guests at a special bon voyage party, as well as for the opening cocktail party on board the ship, the “Norwegian Pearl.” The story of Louganis, the openly-gay Olympic swimming champion whose accident during the 1988 Seoul Games—in which he hit his head on the diving board—is connected to so many important moments in history including the AIDS epidemic and the gay rights movement. The athlete’s return to diving after a long absence is a unique way to explore his enduring legacy. Go Greg!

TV Gets Gay
(In a Fabulous Way) A new survey from the Hollywood Reporter says that greater visibility of openly-gay characters on primetime television is having an impact on the attitudes of Americans towards LGBT rights— and not all of is it good. With major storylines involving LGBT characters on hit programs like “Modern Family,” “Glee,” and “The New Normal,” 27 percent of TV viewers responded that gay exposure made them more supportive of marriage equality, while 12 percent admitted to being more negatively disposed to same-sex marriage. As expected, the survey results broke along party lines, with Obama supporters twice as likely to watch “Modern Family” (ABC) as Romney supporters, twice as likely to watch “Glee” (Fox), and three times more likely to watch “The New Normal” (NBC). Last month, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) released its annual report, “Where We Are on TV,” which shows that a record 4.4 percent of regularly-appearing portrayals in the 2012-2013 season will be of LGBT characters, an increase from 2.9 percent in 2011.
Now, THAT’S a “Modern Family” !

Adam & Ease
The Tasty, Tasteful Tastes of
Thanksgiving By ADAM STRONG “The year that is drawing towards its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies.” Abraham Lincoln’s proclamation of the first national day of Thanksgiving, 1863
B
ecause of an unusual turn this year of the Gregorian calendar (or is it the Julian?— either way: Why, Julius Caesar—or St. Gregory—why!?), believe it or not, Thanksgiving Day is just one week away (I get how you feel: I’m still not quite finished with my Halloween menu—for 2009.) Whether you have yourself a “real” nuclear family (pronounced “new-cleer,” not “new-Qlur”—with apologies to Homer Simpson, and President George W. Bush), with whom you will enjoy food and fellowship, or plan to share the day with your Gayborhood “family,” this is a great chance to roll up your sleeves and roll out some delicious tender loving food care for your friends, family, and assorted peeps. This week and next we will roll out some easy and fun recipe ideas to help get you in the spirit of the day that kicks off so much Holiday good cheer (assuming the Mayans are wrong about that whole December 21 thing).
Onion and Apple Muffins “The best part of the muffin is the top.” Jenna Maroney, “30 Rock” Try these yummy bad boys on for size to kick-start appetites just before Thanksgiving Day football (“Go, Tigers!), or as a yummy side served next to the corn cobs and cranberries. Ingredients • 2 tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) • 1 bay leaf
36
• 1 stick of butter • 4 ribs of greens and celery, from the hearts, chopped • 1 yellow skinned onion, chopped • 3 large apples, quartered and chopped • Salt and pepper • 2 tablespoons of poultry seasoning • ¼ cup of chopped fresh parsley leaves • 8 cups of cubed stuffing mix • 3 cups of chicken stock • Muffin cups, tins for 12 muffins Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Preheat a large skillet over medium high heat. Add EVOO and four tablespoons of butter to the skillet. Once the butter has melted, add bay leaf, and then the vegetables (as you chop them), first celery, followed by the onions, and lastly the apples. Sprinkle the apple/vegetable mix with poultry seasoning, salt, and pepper. Cook for about five minutes to soften the mixture, then add the parsley and stuffing cubes to the pan, and combine. Use the chicken broth to moisten the stuffing, so that the bread is soft, not wet. With the remaining butter, grease up 12 muffin cups (two tins). With an ice cream scoop, pile up the stuffing in the muffin tins. As you scoop the stuffing in, remove any bay leaf pieces you encounter. Bake for about 15 minutes, until the muffins set and are crisp on top. Serve on a platter hot or at room temperature.
Sourdough Stuffing From the time I was a kid, I remember my mom making a delicious stuffing inside the turkey, and having plenty extra to go around on the side. (Besides, who needs the gobbler when you Continued on Page 38

have “the Itis” from too many delicious heaping helpings of the seasoned bready stuff?) Try this as a table side dish that will have them ‘oohing’ between mouthfuls (and discreetly unbuttoning pants tops when they think you’re not looking—the queens). Ingredients • 1 lb loaf of sourdough bread • 8 tablespoons of butter • 10 oz of cremini mushrooms, sliced ½-inch thick in both directions • Salt and pepper • 4 stalks of celery with leaves, cut in half lengthwise and sliced • 1 onion, chopped • 10 sprigs of fresh thyme, with the leaves stripped from the stems • 12 sage leaves, chopped • 3 ½ cups of chicken broth • 3 tablespoons of chopped parsley leaves Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and set aside a two-quart baking dish. Tear the bread into one-inch cubes, and spread it evenly on two baking sheets. Toast bread in the oven for approximately 20 minutes, until it is completely dry and starts to brown, and transfer it to a large mixing bowl. In a large skillet, melt two sticks of butter over medium-high heat. Add mushrooms and two or three pinches of salt. Sauté for about eight minutes, stirring occasionally until golden brown. Add onion, celery, thyme, and two tablespoons of butter. After the butter melts, cook for approximately five minutes, stirring frequently, until the vegetables are soft. Add the remaining four tablespoons of butter and sage. Add chicken broth to skillet, along with salt and pepper, and stir. Place the toasted bread cubes into a large bowl. Pour chicken broth mixture over the bread and toss until bread cubes soak up the liquid. Pour into the greased baking dish, and sprinkle it with parsley. Bake for approximately 40 minutes until heated through and top is golden brown. Remove stuffing from the oven and let cool about 15 minutes before serving.

Wind.” (I also like to imagine the hot scenes in the stables between hunky daddy Rhett Butler and that sissified Southern belle, er, dandy, Ashley Wilkes. C’MON, gurl—you know she was a queen! What the hell was Scarlet thinking? Digressing…) Drop on some Dixie Chicks as you prepare this sweet dish, you Sweet Dish. Ingredients • 3 lbs of sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed • 1 (4 ½ oz) can of evaporated milk • ½ cup of brown sugar • 5 tablespoons of unsalted butter • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract • ½ teaspoon of ground cinnamon • 2 eggs, beaten • Salt and pepper (to taste) • Butter for casserole • 1 cup of coarsely-chopped salted cashews • ½ cup of mini marshmallows • ½ cup of sweetened shredded coconut
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a two-quart casserole dish and set aside. In a large pot of cold, salted water, add potatoes and bring to a boil over high heat. Simmer for approximately 20 minutes, until the potatoes are tender. Drain the potatoes and mash them in a large bowl. Add evaporated milk, cinnamon, butter, vanilla extract, brown sugar, beaten eggs, and salt and pepper. Mix until smooth, and then pour it into the casserole dish. Bake for approximately 25 minutes. In a bowl, toss the cashews, marshmallows, and coconut. Remove casserole dish from oven, top it with the cashew mix, and bake for approximately 10 minutes, until the marshmallows are lightly toasted. Remove casserole and let cool for about 5 minutes before serving. Frankly, my dear, your guests will give a damn. Next week (I do dee-clay-uh!): The Main Event. Gobble-gobble.

West Hollywood Part I
Getting a Lay of the Land By ROBERT ELIAS DEATON
W
WeHo’s iconic Sunset Boulevard
e happened to be living in West Hollywood, California, when it was incorporated as its own city, separate from the rest of Los Angeles—right along with its own exceptionally explicit zip code 90069. The year was 1984, and what now is ancient history seems like only yesterday to us. A lot has changed in the old hood between then and now. The traffic is gridlocked, and the graffiti doesn’t get painted over quite as quickly, but West Hollywood is still the center of L.A.’s thriving gay community. Pretty people, current minds, and a metrosavvy energy. West Hollywood is only two square miles in size, so its entire universe is walkable, with sidewalk cruising providing at least half of the fun. The majority of the hot action takes place on or near Santa Monica Boulevard between Robertson and La Cienega Boulevards, with lots of interesting side streets and alleys to explore with the zeal of Lewis and Clark. It’s with no small bit of Outdoor peoplewatching at The Abbey irony we have watched the epicenter of gaydom, The Abbey (692 N Robertson Blvd.), transform from a small 1,100 square foot gay coffee house into one of the busiest hangouts in all of Los Angeles. In dots-and-dashes, the club expanded across the street from its initial location, adding a bakery to its blends of coffees and teas. The space expanded once more with sandwiches and linen-cover tables in the dining room. Soon, the Al Fresco Main bar became center stage for people, while the Cabana Bar melded fabrics, couches and high ceilings. David’s Bar and the Altar Bar became the place to be seen at night, when The Abbey was taken over by dancers—both straight and gay. And here begins the saga of West Hollywood’s transition. It has become so trendy, so au courant, that slim-as-a-stick adorable females migrated here to get away from the leer of straight men, who then followed them into the once-all-gay

Mecca. All of which leaves The Abbey a mix of straight, gay, bisexual and tri-sexual players who have their acts together—or at least they do for most the night. The most reasonable place to stay in the hood (if not at my friend Carole Ita-is-so-sweeta’s condo), is at the Ramada Plaza Hotel & Suites (8585 Santa Monica Blvd.), where rooms begin at $165 (with a 15 percent discount available for those who book seven days in advance). If daddy has bucks, the closest posh digs are available at the Petit Ermitage (8822 Cynthia St.), where the smallest demi-suite goes for $214.

To pump it up before partying, the gym of choice is 24Hour Fitness (8612 Santa Monica Blvd.), the local outlet of the national chain. It’s full of muscle gods that look the part and are mostly comprised of singer-actor-dancer-waiters who populate the area. The good news is that the natives are more friendly to out-of-towners than their own, and are actively looking you over as well, even if the real play will happen elsewhere. Speaking of cruising, hop on over to Koontz Hardware (8914 Santa Monica Blvd.) and get surprises in every aisle. The men are sizzling hot, with a heavy dose of blue-collar construction types, especially toward the key and bolt division at the rear of the store. Added fun: A unique assortment of designer hardware that’s enjoyable to check out even if you’re only window-shopping. Next week, we’ll be scoping out the bar and club scene, with enough variety to keep every twink, muscle cub and daddy busy for an eightday week. Until then…

Unclenching the Fatal Grip of Arteriosclerosis By ANDY KRESS
A
rteriosclerosis is one of the most common diseases affecting men over the age of 40 today. It is a condition in which the walls of the arteries and veins thicken due to the presence of calcium and lime in the blood, and accounts for a major portion of the growing disability and death rate of older people. This disease causes a loss of elasticity of the blood vessels, narrowing the smaller arteries and veins, which in turn interferes with the free circulation of the blood throughout the body. The disease is usually preceded by another condition called atherosclerosis, which degenerates or softens the inner lining of the blood vessel walls. These two diseases tend to go hand and hand, as they work together to bring you ever closer to an unforeseen heart attack or stroke. Fortunately, this is one disease that is completely preventable or reversible by watching your diet and staying active. Arteriosclerosis usually shows up in those who keep an unbalanced lifestyle, consuming excessive amounts of white sugars, and remaining sedentary throughout the day. These two factors (poor diet and lack of exercise) are the main culprits to acquiring these silent and deadly conditions. Those choosing a diet that consists of fatty and refined foods that are high in cholesterol add to the onset of arteriosclerosis. Other more wellknown diseases that can aid in the contribution of hardening of the arteries are high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, rheumatism, and syphilis. Emotional stress also plays has a major role in acquiring this disease, especially for those who engage in sedentary occupations. Periods of mental and emotional disturbances can enhance the conditions leading to a sudden heart attack as a result of having arteriosclerosis. Heredity and environmental factors also add their share of victims, by habitually teaching children unhealthy eating and exercise habits, which prevents older adults from making needed changes in diet and

lifestyle. If you are practicing these unhealthy habits, now is the time change to avoid ill health in the future. A change in diet is one of the most beneficial things you can do to fight this disease. Eating a well-balanced diet that consists of lots of raw foods, such as fruits and vegetables, is preferred.  Eating plenty of raw and sprouted seeds is a great start to a diet that can prevent this disease from progressing, along with a variety of different nuts. Cold pressed vegetable oils, particularly safflower oil, flax seed oil and olive oil should be used on a regular basis. Several smaller meals should be eaten throughout the day to keep a steady flow of energy and blood sugars, rather than a few large ones. It is imperative to avoid foods consisting of lots of hydrogenated fat, animal fat or excessive saturated fat, butter and cream. Avoiding meats, as well as salty and refined foods, condiments and sauces is recommended. Eliminating strong teas and coffees can be quite beneficial, as well. Removing foods with white sugar and flour, and any products made with them, will also have a profound effect. Even if you can’t exercise vigorously, start moving. Yoga with mediation is a great way to challenge the body and relieve stress. So too is walking with wrist weights. Combining a healthy diet along with a lowstress lifestyle filled with a moderate amount of the exercises listed above will treat and prevent arteriosclerosis’s deadly grip on your circulatory system. Remember, it is never too late to start eating and living a healthy lifestyle. Get up, get out, and put down the fried chicken!

Killing Me Softly: How to ‘Kill’ iOS Apps
T
his happens more often than Apple would like you to think, but much as on a PC, the programs on your iPhone can crash, resulting in your system locking up. Let me be clear (for the benefit of the lawyers), iOS devices—iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad—don’t crash with the same frequency as a desktop computer, but for those who have experienced this (additional, post-pricetag) frustration, you need to kill the app (geek-speak for quitting the program). The following applies to all of the above devices operating on the iOS. (Before you cut your teeth as the next appserial-killer, let me remind you that apps and process is running in the background do NOT drain battery life when they aren’t in use.) For iOS 4 or higher, the built-in Fast App Switcher makes killing an offending app a breeze. Double-click the Home button (at the bottom center of the device), which will show the row of apps below the dock. Slide the apps until you locate the one you want to kill (quit). Tap and hold the app until you see a red badge with a line
50
drawn through it. Tap the red badge to kill the app, along with any background processes it might be running. After you kill the app (and any others you want to quit), click Home. Voila! To Force Quit for older iOS versions that don’t include multitasking (or if the Fast App Switcher doesn’t work), hold the Home button down for about 6 seconds. This should quit the app and return you to the main home screen. If this doesn’t work, the device may need to be reset. No need to thank me. The advice is free (but I charge for the sarcasm).

He Shoots—He Scores!
(The Metaphors Write Themselves with)
ESPN ScoreCenter
F
ull Disclosure: I wasn’t all that “queer” for sports when I was growing up, in fact, I never played catch with my Dad (although we had a weird mutual compulsive-gambling streak involving pistachio ice cream and the New York Mets during the summer of my 7th year, but I digress...). But having nurtured an appreciation for the field of sport, I am now, in my own way, a high-functioning junkie. That’s why the app for ESPN ScoreCenter is a natural for fans both ardent and dabbling. The app delivers live scores from hundreds of leagues (NBA, NFL, NHL, NCAA, Major League Baseball) and dozens of sports (including NASCAR and Formula One racing, cricket, rugby, Lacrosse, tennis, water polo, and Mixed Martial Arts) around the globe, as well as news, standings and lots of great minutiae, regardless of whether you prefer your “football” players in shoulder pads or kit (that was a European reference there, Skippy). It features personalized scoreboards, and realtime game details including the last play, in-game stats, boxscores, game summaries, and standings. It lets you stay abreast of the teams you care about on one card, from both ESPN’s own considerable coverage—supported by its vast reporting and analytical resources—and other sources closer to
52
home (wherever that may be). The most important live sporting events are available at your fingertips with a feature called “The Lead,” which includes in-depth analysis and breaking news, and hot-off-the-camera video clips. SCORE! Free (for Google Play Android, iPad, iPod Touch, and iPhone—requires iOS 3.1.3 or later versions).

Arts & Crafts: Etsy App Update Makes It Easy
T
he crafts website Etsy has a mobile app that accesses all the fun crafts you can find online, and lets sellers monitor their sales while buyers go to town (without, you know, actually having to go to town). The app is similar in form and function to the eBay mobile app, but in this case you are purchasing products that are user-created (instead of being made by Chinese political prisoners, for instance).

The update utilizes an iPhone 5-optimized design (this makes it a whole lot easier to find your way around the site), and features cool extras, such as letting sellers add new listings via remote access, and allowing for additional language translations. This win-win app gives buyers access to plenty of unique and thoughtful products, plus loads of bargains (just in time for the Holidays), and makes the job of sellers a whole lot easier. UPDATE THIS: Free.
