A NEW HOPE FOR GAY ADOPTION BILL BY GRANT JAMES

ashington, D.C. – Tuesday, a bill that would legalize adoption and foster parenting by same-sex couples was introduced. The “Every Child Deserves A Family Act” would prevent discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity or marital status. Currently, seven states ban same-sex couples from adopting his or her partner’s children. Gay couples face legal issues when trying for joint adoption in five of those states. According to the Family Equality Council, the LGBT community face issues with adopting or fostering in 39 states. Supporters are hopeful for the bill’s legalization, likely due to the recent shift in politician’s views on marriage equality. The bill has a bi-partisan backing in the House of Representatives: Reps. John Lewis (D-Ga.) and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla). The lawmakers held a press conference on Tuesday, accompanied by same-sex couples. National Executive Director Jody M. Huckaby from Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) stated, “Why should more than 400,000 children remain in foster care – 104,000 of whom are eligible for adoption – when they could receive this support from loving, capable, and qualified lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender parents? This is truly discrimination at its worst: hurtful to the people who are being denied the opportunity to become parents, and harmful to thousands of vulnerable children being denied the opportunity for stable, loving, permanent homes.” Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) regrets his vote to ban same-sex marriage in D.C. circa 1999. He now says, “I do believe that if there are children who are orphans who do not have a loving person or couple, I think if a person wants to love and raise a child they ought to be able to do that. Period. I would vote that way.” The American Academy of Pediatrics came out in to publicly support same-sex marriage, as well as full adoption and foster care rights for all parents, regardless of sexual orientation. They concluded that there’s no scientific evidence to suggest that children raised by a homosexual couple are any worse off than those raised by hetero parents. Chair of the AAP Committee on Psychosocial Aspects of Child and Family Health, Dr. Benjamin Siegel, released a statement reinforcing the need for gay-marriage: “Children thrive in families that are stable and that provide permanent security, and the way we do that is through marriage.”

arranger and musical director and pianist did the beautiful arrangement. I wanted to completely rethink the song, do it as a ballad. He came up with those beautiful chords behind it. I said I wanted to make the song almost unrecognizable [laughs]. That’s what really excites me about doing covers, when you completely rethink them. That’s how it came about. GS: I think you do the same with “Sooner or Later,” another song with a movie connection (“Dick Tracy”), which was written by Stephen Sondheim. With so many Sondheim songs from which to choose, how did you decide on this one? MR: [Laughs] I was actually one of the actresses being considered for that role. My agent was called about (my) availability and Warren (Beatty) was a big supporter of my singing when I used to sing with my dad’s jazz band. In the ‘80s, he would always come out and hear me. I was really disappointed when I didn’t get the part. I think (recording the was) was a matter of, “God damn it, I’m going to sing the song no matter what” [laughs].
GSIs there a concert tour in the works? MR: Yes. It’s going to vary. Generally, I think it will be me, Peter and bass and drums. Hopefully, we’ll be able to have the sax in their sometimes. It really depends on the venue and the space and people’s availability. GS: Have you started thinking about your next album? MR: I have, yes. It’s always hard not to think ahead. There are so many new songs that we’re working on that I love. I’m sure there’ll probably be another album. GS: In the acknowledgments in your new book, “When It Happens to You,” you include Joan Didion. How much of an influence do you consider her to be and who are some authors who inspire you? MR: Joan Didion has always been a huge influence. I don’t know if you would necessarily see it in my writing, but I think she and Raymond Carver, more than anyone, have influenced me in terms of their economy of language. It’s something that appeals to me. In terms of other writers, I recently discovered a writer and I’m kind of shocked that I hadn’t discovered him until now. He has shot all the way up to my top five, and that’s James Salter. I
just read a book that he wrote called Light Years that really blew me away. And I’m about halfway through his new book that came out in April. He’s one of my new favorite writers. GS: “When It Happens to You” is “a novel in stories.” Which story came first and when did you know that you wanted write more about the characters? MR: The story that came first was actually, “The Harvest Moon,” the first story that appears in the collection. Originally, I had the idea to write a collection on the theme of betrayal, which was what was interesting to me. Thinking about something that sort of connects us all. I thought that it was a very rich subject. I started it with this marital betrayal. As soon as I wrote that story it came out a lot longer than I had anticipated which meant that I was going to have to rethink the other stories. Originally, I had intended to write quite a few stories and have it be a lot shorter. But it didn’t turn out that way. Once I wrote the first story I realized that I wanted to stick with those characters and write around those stories and find out how they had gotten there. That’s when the novel in stories idea came to take shape. Continued on Page 9

GS: One of your earliest acting roles was in a production of the musical “Annie” and in recent years you played the leads in revivals of “Cabaret” and “Sweet Charity.” Does that have anything to do with why you chose to include songs from stage musicals, such as “I Believe In You” (from “How To Succeed in Business…”) and “Where Is Love” (from “Oliver”)? MR: “Where Is Love” has always been one of my favorite songs. It’s also another role that I was being considered for [laughs] and I didn’t get when I was a child. It came right down to me and this little boy and the little boy got it, probably because he was little boy and I was a little girl. I always loved that song and it’s a song that I sing to my kids before they go to sleep. I think it’s a really beautiful ballad. Each song that I chose has some kind of special meaning. In terms of them being from Broadway musicals, just about every song from the Great American Songbook was either written for a Broadway musical or a Hollywood musical because that was our popular music of the day. Which is kind of crazy to think of now.

Gregg Shapiro: Molly, I’d like to begin at the end of your CD with the closing track “Don’t You (Forget About Me).” The song is best known through its association with the movie “The Breakfast Club,” in which you starred, and your jazz-vocal rendition is inspired and delightful, revealing a whole new side to the song. Whose idea was it to include it on the disc? Molly Ringwald: It was my idea. We were recording the album not long after John Hughes had passed away. He was obviously on my mind a lot. I wanted to do something, some kind of tribute to him. Peter Smith, who is my co-producer,

he name Molly Ringwald will probably mean something different to you depending on how old you are. If you were a movie-going adolescent or adult in the early 1980s, Ringwald began making a strong impression on audiences in Paul Mazursky’s “Tempest,” followed by the double whammy of the late John Hughes’ “Sixteen Candles” and “The Breakfast Club,” not to mention “Pretty In Pink.” Younger folks, who might have tuned in to “Different Stroke”s and “The Facts of Life,” just prior to that, will remember her as Molly Parker on both shows. Ringwald’s reign as the Queen of the Brat Pack ended by the late 1980s, although she did continue to work regularly in film and on TV. In the late 2000s, following a second marriage and motherhood, Ringwald had a full-scale career comeback, including stints on Broadway, in the TV series “The Secret Life of the American Teenager.” But, as you’re about to find out, there’s so much more to Ringwald than all that. Ringwald is the author of two books, most recently the stellar “When It Happens To You: A Novel in Stories” (due in paperback in May 2013). She is also quite a singer, and has been performing since she was a child, both on stage in musicals and with her jazz musician father’s band. Her first CD, Except Sometimes (Concord), released in April 2013, does a terrific job of introducing listeners who might have been unfamiliar with that side of Ringwald, to a talented vocalist and skilled interpreter of other people’s songs. I had the pleasure of speaking with Molly before the release of the disc.

nce a year, we get the opportunity to give thanks to the woman who pushed us out of her vagina and into the world. She’s a special lady. You love her (most of the time), and this is your chance to show her how much you appreciate her. Growing up, I was fortunate enough to have a supportive mother. She constantly pushed me to do my best and was there for me with open arms when anything went south. We had our screaming bouts, don’t get me wrong. When I angrily told her at the age of five that “I hated her,” she swiftly went to the bathroom, grabbed a bar of soap and shoved that baby right into my mouth. I learned pretty quick not to mouth off to her anymore. But no matter the qualm, we’d always make up. When I came out at the age of 18, she told me she already knew. There might have even been an eye roll indicating that even Stevie Wonder could see the gayness radiating from me. Following the adorable ice breaker, she gave me a hug and said she loved me – and that was it. Life returned to normal. My father who was somewhat anti-gay when I was younger,

had slowly become more tolerant of it and by the time of my coming out, was completely supportive as well. I was fortunate to have a loving, caring family at that point in my life. My mom made it a priority to make sure I was happy – and she still does, even to this day. The question is, “Is Mother’s Day a Hallmark Holiday?” Yes. Even the holiday’s creator, Anna Jarvis, said she regretted having started it in the first place due to its over-commercialization. It’s one of the busiest days of the year for florist and candy stores and of course, for the greeting card companies. A 2012 study shows that approximately $14.6 billion is spent on Mother’s Day worldwide. Of that, $1.9 billion comes from flower sales and $671 million from Mother’s Day cards. Before Anna Jarvis died in November of 1948, she was completely up in arms over the holiday that she herself had created. When speaking of the day, Jarvis said, “A printed card means nothing except that you are too lazy to write to the woman who has done more for you than anyone in the world. And candy! You take a box to Mother—and then eat most of it yourself. A pretty sentiment.” She and
her sister reportedly spent their family’s inheritance money trying to destroy the holiday and eventually, they both died in poverty. Ironically enough, she never married or had children. Maybe if she had a child of her own to celebrate her life, things would have gone differently for Jarvis. She would have felt the joy from receiving a bouquet of flowers. A handmade card. I invite you to look past the corporate greed and the millionaires across the world who bank off of you buying a card and some flowers, and take a look at the intention of the holiday instead. It was created by a kind, loving thought: honoring your mother on a very special day. For one day out of the year you can buckle down and go visit her. Buy her a thoughtful gift (no not a gift card). While it isn’t necessary to buy someone material things to prove that you love them, it doesn’t exactly hurt to either. If you don’t have the dough, make her something by hand – she’ll love you still the same. She gave you life and let’s face it, she won’t always be here. If she isn’t here, celebrate her anyway. Love you mom.

Coral Gables – The historic Biltmore in Coral Gables has launched a marriage campaign inclusive of gay and lesbian couples. The hotel launched their new campaign at a brunch during the Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. Each attendee received a postcard with images of three different newlyweds: two men, a man and a woman and two women. The phrase “love is love” is prominent and bold. The card received much praise from the guests, some of which told Biltmore staff that they were even going to frame it. The Biltmore hosts roughly 100 weddings a year, and now, the hotel has a gay wedding booked in August.

Partner Benefits In Florida? Pembroke Pines – While gay marriage may be just around the corner, Pembroke Pines may be making history first. The city of Pembroke Pines is “considering” equal benefits to city employees who are registered as domestic partners. Speaking on the topic, commissioner Iris Siple said, “This is a right and a benefit that does not need to be bargained. This is the best thing for our employees. We have to take the leadership role on this.” Police and firefighter union representatives stood to support the equal benefits at a recent meeting. The discussion will continue to unfold at the city’s first meeting in June.
see in the characters, there are different actresses that I like. Of course, I would like to play Marina [laughs], who is the only redhead. I had to write one redhead in there. In terms of Greta, I see somebody like Sarah Polley or Michelle Williams. Somebody smaller than me; I’m quite tall. I’ve always seen Greta as somebody more petite, but with a very intelligent face. I think both of those actresses’ intelligence radiates through. It also has to be somebody who is able to say a lot but their face. A lot of what goes on with Greta is very internalized. GS: “My Olivia” is one of the stories from the book that really stayed with me. What was the inspiration for that story? MR: That’s nice to hear. They were a couple of different inspirations. The first is that I have people in my life that I know are transgendered adults. Most of them are artists and they are flour-
ishing in who they are, now. But I often thought about everything that I didn’t see, when I didn’t know them, what it was like with their families and how they became the person they were, and the choices that their parents made. I also came at it as a mother of three children, and what I would do in that situation. Thirdly, my daughter went to preschool with a child I’m quite sure is transgendered. Actually, three different children, come to think of it. Two were boys who were obviously going to be girls growing up. One of them was a girl who identified as a boy. It was interesting to watch the parents struggle with that and come to terms with it. One of them was coming to terms with it and, I think, doing everything right. The other one was struggling in a way that I don’t know what’s going to happen. I think all of those were my mind a lot and were interesting and intriguing to me. I felt
like I wanted to explore that in writing. GS: You did a wonderful No on Prop 8 PSA a few years ago and you received an Equality Award from Equality California and I would imagine that as an actress, both in theater and in film you probably have a fair share of friends in the LGBT community. When did you become aware of a following in the LGBT community? MR: I don’t know exactly when I became aware of it. I feel like I’ve been in the community for so long it’s hard to say. I suppose I really became aware when I was doing Cabaret in New York. But it’s just been something that’s been building. A lot of it has to do with my outspokenness for the cause. I think that really touched a lot of people. I’ve tried to show up as often as possible and done a lot of work for AIDS and Housing Works and AmFar. It’s definitely a mutual adoration [laughs].
May 8, 2013 H 9
GS: As an actress, as well as a writer, while you were writing the book, were you also envisioning it as a movie, and if so, who were you thinking of in the various roles? MR: I didn’t really see it as a movie while I was writing it. I only saw it as a book. Movie form, for me is so different than prose form. If I had thought of it that way, it might have changed the way that I wrote it. Of course, once it was done and I find myself still thinking about the characters and many people have mentioned that they thought that it would make it good movie, I started to think about it as a film. But the form would have to completely change, because it’s not written as a screenplay. In terms of who I
Florida. While their marriage is honored in Vermont, it is not honored here. But when the couple fell behind on their mortgage and tried to file for bankruptcy, the bankruptcy courts themselves were left scratching their heads. A Florida bankruptcy court wondered whether or not they were eligible for the joint bankruptcy benefits that other married couples receive. Florida hasn’t ever addressed the issue of gay married couples filing for joint bankruptcy, so it’s new to both parties. The bankruptcy agent who is in charge of their case has asked for two to three weeks before making a decision.

ber. In the meantime, any students who apply and list male as their sex on school forms and applications will not be turned away. GLAAD spokesman Wilson Cruz released a statement saying, “No young woman should be denied the opportunity to learn simply because of who she is. That Smith is having this discussion and listening to the community is a positive step, but the school still needs to ensure that no transgender woman is denied the chance to apply.” Debra Shaver, the dean of admissions, is now working to bring that goal to life.
Jason Collins To Headline Democratic National Committee LGBT Gala With Michelle Obama Washington, DC — NBA Jason Collins is quickly becoming the new face of the gay community. Aarhus, Denmark — A group of Danish scientists are on the brink of a possible cure for HIV. The scientists are using a new strategy where the HIV virus is reacti-
vated from its reservoirs, bringing it to the surface, where the body’s natural immune system can then destroy it with the aid of a vaccine. Fifteen people signed up for the trial and the Danish Research Council handed over $2.1 million to support the cause. The procedure appeared to be a breakthrough in the labs, responding to human cells quite well. This will be the first time it will be tested on actual humans, and will take some months of research before anything can be decided.
Austin, TX — Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) makes headlines again, this time with ramblings that many are offended and shocked by. In a video session with Family Research Council’s “Stand With Scouts Sunday” program, Perry said that pop culture has influenced the world and that homosexuality is just “a flavor of the month, so to speak.” The governor went on to say people don’t have to be influenced by pop culture and that we as Americans need to stand up and say “not on my watch.” Later in the video he confusingly drew parallels to the opposition of slavery. He reeled in the speech with, “if we change and become more like pop culture young men will not be as well-served, America will not be as well-served, the Boy Scouts will start on a decline that I don’t think will serve this country well as we go into the future.”
DJ Peter Rauhofer Dies At 48 New York, NY — Peter Rauhofer has died at the age of 48 after losing the fight with brain cancer. His manager, Angelo Russo posted an official statement on Rauhofer’s Facebook, expressing his loss with fans and friends: “It makes me sad, not only that I have lost a friend, but that the world has lost an amazing talent and that future generations will never get to understand the magic that Peter created night after night all over the world. He is gone too soon but we will always have the vast body of music that Peter left for us. Through his music, Peter will live forever.” Rauhofer was supposed to perform at this year’s Miami Beach Gay Pride event, Urge, but was unable to due to his illness. He is survived by his mother, Helga, who resides in Austria.

Dover, DE – Right on the heels of Rhode Island, Delaware will become the 11th state to allow same-sex marriages. State Senate gave the final legislative approval on Tuesday (after nearly three hours of debates) to the bill which will allow same-sex marriage. The bill will now go to Gov. Jack Markell (D), who has promised to sign it. While the bill doesn’t give any more rights or benefits under Delaware law than they already have with civil unions, but people say they want the title more than anything. They say that they deserve the same dignity and respect that heterosexual married couples receive.

Providence, RI — Rhode Island became the 10th state in the country to legalize same-sex marriage when Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee signed the bill on Thursday. Starting August 1, same-sex couples will be able to wed. At the billsigning ceremony, Chafee issued a statement to the LGBT community: “I know that you have been waiting for this day to come. I know that you have loved ones that dreamed this would happen but did not live to see it. But I am proud to say that now at long last, you are free to marry the person you love.” The ex-Republican – now Independent – Gov. Chafee has publicly supported same-sex marriage since 2004, and has now helped shape history. Rhode Island is the final state in New England to legalize gay marriage which may impact other states as well. While the LGBT community continues to battle through the legalization of same-sex marriage, there’s some celebration to be had – another state has gained a crucial civil right.

Bill Cosby’s come a long way. He started doing stand-up, then created Fat Albert before finally reaching the pinnacle of his career, “The Cosby Show.” The show, which ran from 1984 to 1992 created careers for a handful of the cast, with reruns still airing to this day. This is your opportunity to see the stand-up comedian in all of his glory (we’re praying for a Jell-O joke). 6 p.m. Hard Rock. 1 Seminole Way, Hollywood, 33314.

DINING
/floridaagenda floridaagenda.com
BY RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN
T
For non-sandwich eaters, there are a half-dozen salads on the menu with the Asian Chicken ($7.00), a fun way to travel to the Far East without ever leaving Fort Lauderdale. Here, teriyaki chicken breast tops romaine lettuce that is liberally layered crunchy chow main noodles. A traditional Chicken Caesar Salad ($7.00) is an easy-togo-to safety zone—no break from the norm here. Just moist, grilled boneless breast of chicken that has been sliced and served atop romaine lettuce with shaved Parmesan cheese. The good stuff, not cheese that has shaken out of cardboard round labeled Kraft. The offerings of Burgers ($6.50) at Koko all begin with the usual 1/3 pound of premium beef on a thick Keiser bun. You can select any number of free accessory acts from the Burger Bar including lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion, mustard, tomato, mayonnaise and A1 Steak sauce. Toss a little extra jingle into the pot and savor up your burger like the big boys. Think Blue or American Cheese for an extra 50¢; Swiss Cheese, Provolone or Cheddar run an addition 65¢ more. A fried egg is only an added quarter; as is a heap of jalapenos; while a slice of bacon at $1.00 seems reasonable given the flavor ensemble you’ve assembled. Koko is opened from Monday through Friday 11 a.m. till 5 p.m. with fast free delivery available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you dare, ask about the homemade desserts—all chef originals and gooey delights. And, as usual, make sure you say that Florida Agenda sent you.

here’s a hidden lunch spot next to the Galleria Mall called Koko, which on first inspection would seem like an office complex’s version of a food truck. Don’t you believe it. As designed and managed by Johnson & Wale’s graduate John “Koko” Gilley, the menu here has taken basic contents and wrapped it in a complex of flavors. The selection of bistro sandwiches available “Koko-style” include the Tuscan Turkey on a lovely, thick, crusted Ciabatta bread ($7.00). The oven roasted turkey breast is complimented with provolone cheese, roasted red peppers, and sundried tomato mayonnaise. It’s served with an enormous side of Seasoned Fries that are another secret find here and included with each order. Perfectly crispy and dusted with crunch flavor, the Koko fries are $2.00 if ordered a la carte, and are worth the trip alone. When is a Philadelphia Cheesesteak Sandwich ($7.00), not a steak sandwich? When Koko interprets it, that’s when. Only then does it evolve into a hoagie with chicken or buffalo chicken smothered in caramelized onions and served on a fresh white sub bun. Yes, you can get the traditional version with sliver-thin rare ribeye if you’ve left your spirit of adventure at the shopping mall, but we recommend that you take a walk on the wild side. And, once again, don’t forget the seasoned fries (although a mixed green salad is available for those worried about the total calories count). Wraps of all varieties are standard fare here as well, taken to a new level of taste by the innovative use of ingredients. Highly recommended is the Cordon Bleu Wrap ($7.00) with melted Swiss keeping warm company with chicken breast and ham, slathered in honey Dijon with lettuce and tomato. For a Greek touch, give a nod to the Mediterranean ($7.00), with Feta cheese and hummus sharing a spinach wrap with roasted red peppers and grape leaves.

SALAD LYONNAISE
RECIPE
BY CHEF JEAN DOHERTY
I
was lucky to spend 36 years in Lyon, which has been known as the French capital of gastronomy. This is due, in part, to the presence of many of France’s finest chefs in the city of Lyon and its surrounding areas. This reputation also comes from the fact that two of France’s best known wine-growing regions are located near Lyon: Beaujolais to the North, and Côtes du Rhône to the South. My first encounter with delicious food was in Lyon when I was 17 years old. This is a typical “Lyonnais” special…simple yet “ab fab.” In Lyon they use “piss en lit” (translated literally “pee in the bed” and is in fact Dandelion leafs) but frisée will replace that nicely. This is for one serving… so do your math for the number of guests. A handful of fresh frisée lettuce, torn into bite sized pieces 2 strips bacon
1 teaspoon chopped shallots 1 slice French or Italian bread and a little butter to make buttered croutons 1 poached egg 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp wine vinegar 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard Salt and pepper to taste Cook two strips of bacon on medium heat until done, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat, let drain off excess fat on a paper towel. Once cool, chop. Cut a slice of French or Italian bread into cubes. Toast on medium high heat in a small saucepan with a teaspoon of melted butter. Don’t stir the croutons unless to turn to a different side once one side is toasted. Poach the egg. Bring about an inch of salted water to a boil in a small, deep skillet, then lower heat to barely bubbling. One at a time, break eggs into a shallow bowl and slip them into
the bubbling water. Cook eggs for 3 to 5 minutes, just until the white is set and the yolk has filmed over. Remove each egg with a slotted spoon and drain briefly on a paper towel. Layer the frisée, bacon, shallots, and croutons on a salad plate. In a small bowl, mix the olive oil, vinegar, mustard, salt and pepper. Pour dressing over salad. Top with the poached egg. You are a chef!
Although born in Dublin, Ireland, Chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.

Some of the known causes of acne: kelp, salt and red meat
NUTRITION
androgens the body also stimulates hair growth, which in turn increases the shedding of keratin (a protein in hair), resulting in a clogged pore. This clogged pore then forms a whitehead or closed comedo. Sometimes the pores and glands become infected with bacteria that usually inhibits the skin, thus causing the most severe case of acne--cystic acne. Cystic acne can be hereditary and past down from generation to generation. There are certain foods and lifestyle choices that can cause this skin disease. Salt is a major contributor to acne and should be avoided in large doses. These large doses can cause a flare up and provoke a more deleterious case of acne. Heavily cured meats should be avoided during bouts of
breakouts. Another food that should be used in moderation is kelp supplements. Kelp is mainly used as a salt substitute and can cause severe cystic acne. High doses of B vitamins are also linked to acne. Red meats have lots of vitamin B6 and B12, portions should be cut back or used in moderation to the standards of the food pyramid plate. High doses of vitamin A can cause dry and flaking skin that can bring acne to the surface. Self-treating acne with supplementation can have a very adverse effect. Constant over-exposure to the sunlight can exacerbate conditions of acne as well. Sunbathing and the heavy use of tanning beds while covered in tanning oils can cause breakouts to occur. Steroid use is a lifestyle choice that features acne as a side effect. Using steroids of any kind for whatever reason without a doctors prescription is a bad choice all the way around, especially for your overall health.
There are also many ways to prevent and combat acne’s evil grip on your skin. One is having a diet consisting up to 50% fruits and vegetables. Eating fresh fruits and vegetable that have higher concentrations vitamins A and C tremendously improve skin health. Whole grains and cereals with B vitamins and zinc helps lower acne incidences. Lean cuts of meats like chicken, fish, pork is recommended in the fight against this skin disease. Portions of these lean cuts of meat should be 4oz or less if eating only three meals per day. When treating or preventing acne, try not to scrub abrasively or use harsh chemicals that dry out the skin. Choosing to have a proper diet, regularly exercising, keeping stress low and getting an adequate amount of sleep will be your best defense against this troublesome skin problem. Good nutrition; clean skin.

cne is a problem that affects most Americans at one point in their lives. For most, it comes during adolescence, but for some it is a continued problem into adulthood. Not only is this health condition unsightly, but it can also be very painful at times. These blemishes can have a major impact on the condition of the skin, leaving behind deep scars and cysts where the skin infection once grew. There are ways of fighting off this embarrassingly harsh skin disease through a healthy diet and lifestyle. Many dermatologists will tell you that hormones are responsible for most of the cases of acne. This is true, but the foods you eat have a major impact on your overall health and the way the brain functions to send these hormones through the body. The hormones involved are called androgens or male sex hormones. These hormones prompt the skins oil glands to enlarge and produce excess sebum (the oily substance that lubricates the skin). THROUGH THE PANAMA CANAL
Source Events Sails Two Oceans—Part Four

TRAVEL
BY ROBERT ELIAS DEATON

ransiting the Panama Canal sounds like one of those romantic events, akin to sailing the Nile or riding an elephant through Thailand’s Khao Sok rainforest. Adventure, thrill and photo op—all wrapped into an eight-hour journey—as you marvel at this rustically antiquated means of dropping between the higher Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea with its lower tides outside of the open Atlantic. To gain entry to the Panama Canal on the south side, one needs to go under the Bridge of the Americas, built in 1962. Aboard the Source Events’ chartered Wind Star sailing yacht, we approached the bridge at night, under a full-moon sky that was Hollywood-soundstage perfect. This, as it turned out, was both the good news and the bad news. The Bridge of the Americas has a clearance at high tide of only 201 feet. At last measure, the Wind Star’s four masts rise 204 feet in the air. We’re not sure what the nautical term for this is, but in layman’s terms, it looked like a collision waiting to happen. The full moon didn’t help the situation, of course, keeping

the tides from lowering as much as they might at our projected 11 p.m. graceful sail under the span. The fact that we made our approach and then stopped—as in completely stopped—in front of the bridge, only increased our sense of anticipation. For over an hour we hovered as a crowed of hundreds were attracted onto the span itself, looking down at us as we look up. A tug boat and a police boat with a giant spotlight only served to heighten the suspense. Our onboard DJ threw his own joke into the moment by playing “Bridge Over Troubled Water” for a boatload full of happy gay campers who thought the entire event was little more than a photo op staged by the clever Source Events team. Finally, at just after 11:15 p.m., the
Wind Star began to inch its way under the span which from the deck looked definitely too low. Long story short, we did eventually clear the bridge with eight inches to spare. Only later did we learn that the police vessels were there to prevent any other ships in the area from creating a wake. The following morning, the entire yacht was up and alert as we spent the day passing through the lochs that comprise the canal. “We were sailing through history, from ocean to ocean, as we passed the construction site of the new addition to the Panama Canal anticipated to open in 2015,” said Source Events’ president Craig Smith. On our last evening on the elegant yacht, the entire Source Events’ team, helmed by Cruise Director Heinie Lund, hosted a talent show to make “The
Love Boat”’s Julie McCoy proud. Featuring both crew and passengers, this shipboard extravaganza evidenced just how many unsung stars were included among our midst. Pianist Jimmy Vukovich keep the music flying by right along with his keyboard, while hosts Danny Valdez, John Cornelius, and Todd Dunlap, joined DJs Chris Racine, Frances Preve, and director of operations Rafael Rodriguez to root from the sidelines in the over-packed Source Lounge. Say what you will, but 140 gay men (with two straight couples) know how to throw quite the party. One of the straight husbands aboard set the tone of the entire cruise by saying as a farewell toast that he and his wife “had never had more fun.” From the sound of the cheers that drifted off into the Panamanian night, he and his wife were not alone.

Pastor should admit mistakes, aPologize and reach out to all his flock A true leader and pastor would do so, a divisive dictator would not. Which one is Durrell Watkins?
May 8, 2013 H 26
M
y Fellow Members and Former Members of The Sunshine Cathedral. I love our church. So, I did some research to find out why so many long time members have left and are leaving. This is what I call positive research and the results could help make The Sunshine Cathedral a better place to worship. But, I don’t think our Preacher can accept the results. It seems every time someone questions why something is done or suggests an alternative, he has a very negative feeling toward the questioner. I believe he thinks that it is a personal attack on him. He does not seem to see that feedback can make him a better Preacher and maybe someday, a better Pastor to his flock. Why did I do research in the form of a survey? Because, the leaders of the church do not want to hear the TRUTH. In fact, it seems open and honest discussion about the many who left the church is not allowed. The last two years at each of the annual congregation meetings, I was the only member to ask questions. I asked why so many members were leaving Sunshine Cathedral? No answer from the preacher. The January 2013 meeting I said I had a list of more than 100 long-time members who left the Cathedral. I asked Durrell if he wanted a copy. He said NO! Can you believe that? As I continued to ask another question, I was told by a member behind me, to shut up and sit down. I turned around and told that member to go to hell. Then it was announced the meeting was over! No more questions, no more discussion. This experience made me feel that a survey was needed because I suspected that our preacher and staff might be covering up something. This
survey tries to expose the truth! So, I did this survey at my own expense. I hope you will enjoy reading the results, which are based on 44% return of 134 questionnaires. For a copy, please email me: PASTORMUSTGO@aol.com. I tried to share the survey results with Durrell and other members of the church board. When told I couldn’t, I explained I would pass out the results to all members in the parking lot. But, Ed Johnson, a paid church staffer, said: “I WILL HAVE YOU ARRESTED BY THE SHERIFF IF YOU GIVE OUT THIS SURVEY ON CAMPUS.” I’m sure you’ll agree, it was not a very Christian response on his part. What is he afraid of? But, it is all too typical of a preacher and staff member who are closed minded and attempt to bully others to keep quiet. I ask you....when many members are leaving or have left....why can’t we speak or discuss it at the church annual meetings. Why can’t we speak or discuss it at the board meeting. Why can’t we let members know why others are leaving the church? What happened to FREEDOM OF SPEECH? It is my church too. Why can’t we be concerned about our church members? Why can’t we talk about why more than 150 long time members have left and what can be done to try to bring them back or keep more from leaving? My survey is NOT negative as has been stated. But a very positive effort because the responses expose the truth of what is happening at the Sunshine Cathedral. I hope we all pray that Durrell Watkins can become a better preacher. With insight from the survey results, we all can hope to see a better Cathedral for everyone. I hope that our EX members who have left might return! But so far, the preacher still doesn’t want people
to speak the truth. We are only supposed to talk about positive things as he dictates, which we all know is just his half-truth. It’s like he wants us to drink his version of kool-aid, without thought or question. He doesn’t want to hear what we have to say. In fact, his last sermon was about me and attacked my freedom of speech. He showed on the big screen in the sanctuary, a person with tape across the MOUTH. It was directed at me to keep my mouth shut. Now you see why I must turn to and publish this in the media. We must try to let people know the truth. We must let people know why many long-time Christian members feel they must leave their church. The Sunshine Cathedral is my church too. I will not leave, even though the preacher has asked me to find another church. You guessed it. I refused. I will be at the church for the long haul, to see preachers come and go. I am a Christian that believes a good shepherd will find out why any sheep leaves his fold. And then, fix the problems. Our preacher seems not to follow the teachings that OUR LORD has taught us! Why our preacher did not want to do this study is unbelievable! Why doesn’t he want long time members to stay at the church? Why he cannot practice what he preaches makes me think he has a problem! He and his staff seem to be bullying people so he can have his way, without question or discussion. He seems to hope that people who disagree will leave the church. What kind of church leader is that? Yet, he could take this study, listen to the responses and become a better minister. If the past is any indication, he will probably become bitter and accuse me of not being a positive member.
We once had a Cross on our Steeple as a symbol of our Christian church. It is gone. We sing the Lord’s Prayer, but only with Durrell “approved words.” We sing hymns, but only with Durrell “approved words.’ We pray, but only with Durrell “approved words.” We used to have wonderful music, but the choir has decreased to about ten volunteers and two paid. Instead of hearing our 1/2 million dollar pipe organ, we have a poorly played guitar as our lead worship instrument. He removed the words Father, Son, Kingdom and all the other words that we are told are so offensive to women. It seems he has alternative plans and is using the church to do them to fulfill his fantasy world. He seems happier when dressed as a Drag Queen looking for an audience. And, it appears he uses the church to fulfill his childhood dreams of becoming a star, rather than being a pastor, in the true sense of the word, to ALL the flock at the Sunshine Cathedral. Let’s encourage our members to speak freely and openly. Let’s solve our problems. Let’s leave behind the dictator style of leadership and encourage all to participate. Let’s make our members happy and ask the many who have left to return to the fold. I am a very positive member of our Church, with hopes of seeing Jesus and His Christian teachings back again at THE SUNSHINE CATHEDRAL. Blessings and thanks for reading this,
Joe Mumpower
