hriving In South Florida With Bobby Blair” is my new weekly publisher’s column that I’ve implemented to empower and inspire readers. Using the newspaper as a platform, I’ve created a new way for readers to connect with the community in a very personal way. Each week, I will be featuring a member of our own community who share their real stories of bravery, tenacity and a strong will to survive. They face dilemmas and hardships that we can all relate to, and in the end, they come out on top. Combining our print edition with our strong online presence, I will be be bringing the community inspirational stories weekly, in a whole new way. In addition to the print version of the column, we will also feature an internet talk show segment through guymag.net and floridaagenda.com. You’ll be able to see episodes of the talk show “Thriving In South Florida With Bobby Blair,” exclusively through our sites. The purpose of my internet talk show is to inspire people within our own community by using a tool that’s been right here all along: the community itself. Some of the greatest role models are right here in our very own community. This week’s game changer and success story is Marc Hansen. I hope that you enjoy both the talk show and the feature below. Marc Hansen has had HIV/AIDS since 1985. He’s been on his death bed numerous times, but has continued to serve the community, showing the world that you can achieve great things if you stay strong, focused and above all else, hopeful. A native of Laguna Beach, he moved to Wilmington, Delaware in his teenage years. At the time, Delaware wasn’t exactly the gay sanctuary that it is now. It was about the furthest thing from California, but Marc still managed to make it work. Following high school, he went into the military because he felt that at the time, it was his duty as a man and an American to serve his country. He served in the Air Force as a Med Tech for six years before finding out he had HIV/AIDS from the flight surgeon in 1985. The diagnosis is never an easy pill to swallow, but in 1985, it was especially crippling. It was a time when AIDS was making a name for itself as “the gay disease,” and was essentially thought of as a death sentence. Following orders to leave the base immediately, he stayed at a hospital for four months. He endured spinal taps, blood tests and more in an effort to cure the mystery disease, but he attributes his nine lives to his positive attitude. After receiving the diagnosis, he was determined to live. When he moved to South Florida, he fell in love with the community. Because there was no one there to help the community (people had to do what they had to do in order to survive, and that was it), there was a strong sense of motivation within people like Marc. He met his partner, Mark, at the now-closed Hideaway. His partner was a supervisor at Hamburger Mary’s (now Rosie’s) at the time and the two have been inseparable ever since.

Hansen is now the president of Pride South Florida, the organization responsible for Pridefest, the largest Pride Festival in the state of Florida. Thousands of attendees and up to 250 vendors participate in the two day celebration, striving to promote positive images of gay, lesbian and transgender people. What started as a picnic in the park in 1996 has now turned into a huge tourist destination. The pride event steadily grows in numbers, including a much-talked about performance from pop duo Karmin this past year. The nonprofit organization’s mission statement is boldly prominent on their website: “To provide the South Florida community with various functions throughout the year, to promote and engage in educational, civic and cultural activities in order to enrich the lives of gays, lesbians, bisexual, and transgender people and the community as a whole, and to work together to achieve common goals.” All proceeds from the organization go right back to local charities. Though Hansen joined the organization back in 2006 and has already changed thousands of lives through Pridefest since, he’s still not completely satisfied. He has one wish before he parts ways with the community indefinitely: “I just hope that the community I leave will be better than it was when I found it.” Fortunately for Marc, he doesn’t have to wait until he’s gone to make a difference – he already has.

Anti-Gay Group Leader Refuses to Talk about “Gay Impulses” during Radio Interview

New York, NY – Bryan Fischer, a conservative radio host and director of issues/analysis for the American Family Association has gained some attention after appearing on Alan Colmes’s radio show, Liberaland. He discussed various hot topics including his views on Obama taking away guns from Christians and how homosexuality would cause the collapse of Western economy. Fischer believes that being gay is a choice and that acting on an urge is different than having an urge itself. After Fischer stated that “people are not obligated to act on every sexual impulse that they experience,” Colmes asked if Fischer had ever experienced any gay impulses of his own. The hate-group leader refused to answer and became livid when Colmes continued to pry. Colmes finally ended with, “So you won’t tell me whether you yourself have been able to overcome a gay impulse?” To which Fischer replied, “Alan, give it a rest.”

Conservative Boy Scouts Members Threaten Backlash

Moscow, Russia – A gay man was tortured to death Sunday by two men who were drinking beers with him just moments before the attack. The 23-year old man was found naked in the courtyard of an apartment building in Volgograd, skull beaten in with stone, sodomized by beer bottles – his genitals, mutilated. The horrifying incident was reported by a Volgograd Investigative Committee spokeswoman as a gay hate crime, which is almost never reported in the country. Two men, ages 22 and 27, have been detained in a connection with the attack. The three were reportedly drinking beers just before the attack, in celebration of Victory Day, a Russian holiday that took place on May 9. Russia is currently considering a nationwide law banning “gay propaganda” among minors. The law is said to be fueling homophobia and is currently effective in numerous regions, including St. Petersburg.

Irving, TX – The Family Research Council has posted a series of videos, featuring Boy Scout leaders threatening to pull their families out of the Boy Scouts Association if the board votes to include openly gay members and scout leaders. The divided opinions amongst the organization have been causing an uproar for months now, but an end is in sight. The issue will be voted on by roughly 1,400 people in the BSA’s National Council next week at a meeting in Texas. While it appears that gay scouts may get some leeway, gay scout leaders may have a long wait ahead of them. John Stemberger, an Eagle Scout and conservative activist from Florida, argued that the new proposal is due to the recent pressure on gay-rights. Stemberger says, “We urge the National Council to vote against this resolution and uphold the time-tested membership policy of the Boy Scouts.”

St. Paul, MN – Just before Michele Bachmann’s state voted in same-sex marriage, a video surfaced online in which the Minnesota Rep. (R ) said that America was “judged” on 9/11 in both 2001 and 2012. Bachmann went on to say that she will be supporting the newly branded 9/11 holiday – a day for praying and fasting. The day is being created by both Bachmann and World Net Daily editor, Joseph Farah (who is anti-gay). On WND, an introduction for the day states, “America is facing challenges today that, in many ways, rival anything seen since the start of World War II. There’s a concerted effort to redefine marriage as any union between people, regardless of sex, possibly regardless even of the number of participants in that union and possibly even regardless of the status of blood relationship between them.”

Following the same-sex marriage bill passing in Delaware, Crist took to Facebook to voice his opinion: “Some great news: On Tuesday, Delaware became the 11th state to allow marriage equality. Meningitis Outbreak in New York Worries Local Community A Meningitis outbreak in New York worries the local gay community in Florida after the New York State Department of Health urged men who have traveled to New York since September 1, 2012 to get vaccinated, regardless of their HIV status. The recent outbreak in New York is unusually high and is endangering the lives of many men in the big city. The warning for vaccination has many people on edge, including Dr. Nabil El Sanadi, Broward Health’s director of emergency medicine: “The whole thing is, with our airports and seaports, we don’t want [that first] case here, so we can’t afford not to have this on our radar.” While there has been no documented instance of the outbreak spreading beyond the Big Apple’s borders, locals are still concerned. Wilton Manorsbased group, SunServe, is discussing possible further actions to be taken with the state health department.

Expressions of Hope: A Project for Our Community Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention (FISP) invites you to join as they collaborate with Robin Braun, the Executive Artistic Director of the Inside Out Theatre Company, Inc. and Sunserve, The Pride Center of Equality Florida and the City of Wilton Manors. The event acts as a message to the community: suicide prevention is up to us – as a community. The number of suicides in the gay community are a testament that we cannot simply be – we must also act. FISP has been awarded an Art Grant by the Community Foundation of Broward and is planning an “Expressions of Hope” project. FISP describes the project in a press release: “The project centers around how the LGBT community can become involved in the creation and presentation which will include a series of theatre workshops that will foster community dialogue about suicide prevention. The end result will be a multimedia

Orlando, FL – One Million Moms have targeted Gay Days yet again. The organization has announced that it will fly a banner – in both English and Spanish – to discourage families from going to the theme park over the weekend of Gay Days. On the organization’s website, they released this statement: “The first Saturday in June, homosexuals, bisexuals and transvestites will be at the Magic Kingdom with an agenda and purpose different than what would be expected at Disney. Homosexuals will be celebrating the 23rd anniversary of Gay Day wearing matching Gay Day merchandise, such as T-shirts. There will also be transvestites dressed in drag showing their support for the event. Disney has been irresponsible for far too long. Disney representatives and security need to maintain a family-friendly atmosphere and require proper conduct and dress code on a daily basis.” They ask families to send emails to Disney’s CEO, urging the park to “no longer ‘go along’ with Gay Day.”

One Million Moms vs. Gay Days

Local Realtor Rick Gibson passed away on April 24, 2013. Friends and family members have been struck with huge loss, but are now inviting members from the community to stop grieving and to start celebrating Gibson’s life. From 2-4 p.m. on May 18, there will be a “celebration of life” in his honor at The Pride Center at Equality Park, in Wilton Manors. The organizers ask in lieu

Laurie Halverson, a Democrat from a suburb outside of St. Paul, spoke of marriage equality late last week before the final vote: “There are kids being raised by grandparents, single parents, two moms or two dads. Some of those folks are my friends. And we talk about the same things as parents. We talk about large piles of laundry, and how much it hurts to step on a Lego. That’s what we do, because we’re all families.” The state is the first state in the Midwest to legalize gay marriage by legislative vote (Iowa legalized gay marriage in 2009 through a court ruling). It’s the third state in 10 days to follow suit in the recent shift in marriage equality, following on the heels of Delaware and Rhode Island. Illinois appears to be next on the list, with a gay marriage bill that has cleared the state Senate but still awaits the House vote. Starting August 1, couples will be able to marry freely, regardless of sexual orientation. St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman had the Wabasha Street Bridge covered in rainbow-striped flags, temporarily naming it the “Freedom to Marry Bridge,” in support of marriage equality, stating it’s also “Freedom to Marry Week.”

t. Paul, MN – On Monday, Minnesota became the twelfth state to legalize same-sex marriage. Minnesota Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann tweeted, “I’m proud to have introduced the original traditional marriage amendment, and I thank all Minnesotans who have worked so hard on this issue,” but still has yet to officially comment on the bill’s signing at the time of print. Bachmann recently linked gaymarriage to 9/11 and in an earlier video said that America is facing a time of “spiritual warfare.” The shift in support of gay marriage is polarizing, seeing as the both of the state’s chambers were controlled by Republicans who voted to put a gay marriage ban on the ballot just two years ago. The bill signing ceremony by Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton took place at 5 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon in the state’s capitol, St. Paul. The bill won in a vote 37-30, after hours of debate. Democratic Sen. Ron Latz spoke out during the debate, telling his peers, “Members, God made gays, and God made gays capable of loving other people. So who are we to quarrel with God’s intentions?” Minnesota Sen. Vicki Jensen (D) stated, “I could never and I would never deny the kind of recognition and all the other posi-

At the 12th annual Yellow Gala Awards, the Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber Of Commerce will honor corporate and individual supporters of the Miami-Dade LGBT community. The gala will celebrate local heroes that were elected for their “long-term commitment to fostering diversity.” The annual event is MDGLCC’s main fundraiser for the year and helps to fund the organization, from operations to expanding the programming in general. BELGIAN ENDIVE, HAM, AND CHEESE AU GRATIN

RECIPE

he Belgian endive has an ivorywhite head with pale yellowedged, closely wrapped leaves, a mildly bitter flavor, and tender juicy texture. You can eat them raw in salads or cooked; braised or au gratin as follows. • 8 Belgian Endives, cored. (Slice off about 1/8th inch from the stem end. Then, with paring knife, cut a cone shape about 1/2-inch deep from the stem end. This is hard & bitter. Dump it.) • 2 or 3 cups of grated cheese (Feel free to work with what you’ve got cheese-wise. I like the melting properties and the taste of Gruyere, but anything heady and luscious will do.) • 8 Slices of ham (Use your favorite, smoked, honey baked, whatever...) • Béchamel sauce Lightly grease a baking dish. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil over medium-high heat. Place the cored endives into the water. Cover, and cook until tender, 5 to 10 minutes. Drain well. I usually wrap them in kitchen paper, and give them a squeeze to get a lot of that moisture out. Prepare your béchamel

sauce. Don’t forget the nutmeg. Preheat your oven at 400˚. Wrap each endive with a slice of ham, and place into the prepared baking dish. Pour the béchamel sauce over the endives. Sprinkle with the cheese. Are you drinking Martinis before dinner??? Fine… 20 minutes before you get totally ripped, bung the dish in the oven, and tell someone more responsible to check when the cheese is golden brown and the sauce is bubbling….Beautiful!! You can also make this dish with leeks it is equally delicious. Although born in Dublin, Ireland, Chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.

The chef teased our soul with some complimentary Sublime Picatta ($18.00), which is a serious dish of gardein cutlet, mashed potatoes and green beans, washed in a lemon-caper sauce. The dish could have stolen the table’s heart, but this table really had no heart—being all greedy stomach. Better to know, of course, before dessert. A wonderful choice for an entrée is the Portobello Stack ($18.00)—huge mushrooms stuffed full with roasted tomato flesh, sautéed spinach, a mushroom Marsala sauce with a side of quinoa. Smack your lips good, and twice as filling. When is pasta, not really pasta? When it’s Raw Mein ($18.00). In another dish conceived to fool the eyes and the stomach, the noodles here are made from zuccini, with bok choy, Napa cabbage, red peppers, and carrots with a ginger miso sauce drizzled just so. If you’re picking up on a theme, you’ve caught the essence of Sublime. Vegetables can take many forms when cast in the play of culinary treats here. From noodles to patties to taco stuffing, this is illusion taken to a whole new level from the clever imagination of owner Nanci Alexander. Alexander is the founder of the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida (ARFF) and Sublime was originally created as a means to fund the organization (100% of the profits from the restaurant go to foundations that promote animal welfare and a vegan lifestyle). he north wall of Sublime Restaurant & Bar are fountains of glass that set the tone for this sophisticated natural and organic restaurant and bar. Elegant, moving, and pure. The fact that everything on the menu is plant based is secondary to the experience here. Be prepared to be transformed into a better you. The culinary treats begin with appetizers, and we never fail to appreciate the soup of the day— this visit it was a Chickpea Vegetable ($7.00) and, like all soups, made housefresh daily. Served a wonderful warm temp, it brings perfect to a new and comfy place. The Fire-Roasted Artichoke ($10.00), which actually is an artichoke, started a tableside discussion of food pretending to be what they are not in this gasto- extraordinary place. That the artichoke was dusted in Panko crumbs and dipped in garlic butter sauce hides its origin, but only for so long. The flavor eventually wins out, and so do your taste buds. The Frito Mesto ($11.00) is a crispy cauliflower appetizer sighing with sweet chili sauce and sesame seeds. Subtle, tasty, and a crunch favorite. After a give and take battle broke out over the advantages of Mac N Cheese ($7.00) versus the more trendy gimmick like Pretzel Dip Medley ($11.00), we thought that the Mac N Cheese got cleared for take-off, but the Pretzel Dip made it to the table. In this case, make that three thick soft pretzel logs the size of stogies, with tomato hummus, caramelized onion spread, and key lime mustard. Of the lot, the caramelized onion spread started war number two—such was it’s freshing taste. For those who do want the Mac N Cheese, it’s another case of what you see is not necessarily what you get, since the dish actually contains no cheese despite the name. No Sublime dish contains it. In this version, there’s a Dijon beschamel cheddar sauce, with the gooey pasta topped with more Panko crumbs. The results are appropriately deceptive.

hen Rhode Island became the 10th state to legalized same-sex marriage, they put the capital city of Providence squarely on the honeymoon map for the LGBT community, violets and all. RI is a small state: population just over a million and a half people, with some 178,000 in the capital. Once the headquarters of Mafia gangsters, Rhode Island lost that distinction when the syndicate headed to the warmth of Florida and left the clear skies in Providence to be transformed into a tourist destination. Gay artists had previously set the tone of the incredibly progressive Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Art (224 Benefit St, 401-454-6500).
