In Tbilisi, Georgia: Mob attacks bus carrying gay marchers to safety after they were assaulted by priests

May 22, 2013 H 5

ithin the past week, the number of gay-related hate crimes committed that were witnessed worldwide has rattled the gay community its core. On Friday May 17, in Tbilisi, Georgia, thousands of antigay protestors took to the streets, threatening to physically assault any participant in the gay pride parade that was scheduled to take place the same day. Posters that read, “We don’t need Sodom and Gomorrah,” and “Democracy does not equal immortality,” filled the streets to protest “homosexual propaganda.” The protest resulted in the cancellation of the gay pride parade, leaving dozens of LGBT members injured and afraid. While Georgia’s human rights ombudsman, Uchi Nanuashvili, said that it is “deplorable” that gay people’s constitutional rights were violated, many members of the community beg to differ. 21-year-old Nikolai Kiladze says, “We are against the propaganda of homosexuality. If we need to allow parades like this in order to become a member of the European Union or other Western organizations and blocs, then I’m against joining these organizations.” On Saturday, Mark Carson was shot dead in Greenwich Village in what is now being identified as a hate crime. Three men walking near Sixth Avenue and Eighth Street assaulted Carson and another man while yelling homophobic slurs like asking them if they were “gay wrestlers,” and, “Do you want to die here?” After one of the attackers took off, 32-year-old Mark Carson was shot in the face by one of his assailants. He died at Beth Israel Hospital following the attack. The murder was on the heels of four other attacks in New York, all believed to be gay hate crimes. Even just before the time of print, two other attacks have been reported. Nightlife promoter Dan Contarino was brutally beaten just hours after a rally against anti-LGBT violence. Witnesses who came to Contarino’s aid heard his attacker shouting anti-gay slurs while kicking the victim repeatedly. A gay couple, 41 and 42, were also attacked late night Monday night in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan. The couple were attacked by two men who started yelling anti-gay remarks in both English and Spanish (the victims were Hispanic.) Both victims were punched, with one suffering an eye injury. Two men, ages 32 and 33, were arrested and face charges of assault in a hate crime. The crimes have all surfaced following the recent legalization of same-sex marriage in multiple states and countries worldwide, leaving many to speculate that there is a connection between gay marriage and the surge of hate crimes.

Florida Teen Arrested, Expelled For Same-Sex Relationship

pen the script, he said she told him he was the first gay person she had met in 31 years.

Cannes, FR – Uma Thurman is slated to play Anita Bryant, in the upcomig biopic, titled “Anita.” The film, which will be produced by “Sex and the City” creator, Darren Star, will follow the singer and orange juice spokeswoman who, after allowing a gay screenwriter into her home, is forced to confront her past and her politics. Bryant successfully overturned a gay rights law in Florida back in 1977, which resulted in the death of her career. Bryant was also the first person to be publicly “pied” (on television no less) in Des Moines in 1977. Bryant said, “At least it’s a fruit pie,” before praying and bursting into tears on camera. When screenwriter Chad Hodge connected with Bryant back in 2011 to

Gay Rights Activists Interrupt Marco Rubio

KEVIN MILLER

Tampa, FL – Marco Rubio has been working to make sure that immigration reform legislation is passed, but wants to exclude any LGBT binational couples. Protestors showed up to interrupt Rubio’s speech during the Hillsborough County Republican Party Lincoln Day Dinner in Tampa on May 18. The activsts (who were linked to the organization GetEqual) shouted in protest, “Include our families in the immigration reform,” and, “All families matter!” Rubio may be trying to win the latino vote, but he is seemingly disconnected

Vero Beach, FL – 18-year-old Kaitlyn Hunt was arrested in February at her home in Vero Beach and faces two felony counts of “lewd and lascivious battery on a child 12-16 years of age.” The family has until May 24 before they have to make a decision on whether or not to accept a plea bargain that was offered by the state (which would leave Hunt with felony child abuse charges on her record as well as two years of house arrest), or to risk it all and go to court. The

story was kept relatively quiet until May 17 when Hunt’s parents created a “Free Kate” Facebook page as well as an online petition, which currently has just under 110,000 signatures. Kaitlyn and her girlfriend were on the same basketball team, and did not hide their affection for each other. When their coach took notice of the relationship, father Steven Hunt stated, “The coach came up to Kaitlyn during a practice and said,. ‘I heard that you and so and so are in a relationship and I will not have that on my team; therefore, you have to quit.’” The coach kicked Kaitlyn off of the team, went to the other girl’s parents, telling them of the relationship between the girls. After their underage daughter refused to stop seeing Hunt, her parents formed a plan. They waited until Kaitlyn was 18 year old so that she would be tried as an adult, and then called the police to file the report.

or some time now, two movie musicals gave me comfort and, simultaneously, a sense of horror. The musicals are “Gigi” and “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.” What gives me comfort is obvious— the creativity, the beautiful melodies, etc. What horrified me were the plots and lyrics in a modern world context. I mean, if an old man walked through Central Park today singing “Thank Heaven for Little Girls” the way Maurice Chevalier walked down the Champs Elysées in “Gigi,” he’d be arrested for sure. Watching the movie, we can’t get away from what the lyrics might mean in today’s loss-of-innocence context. When I saw “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” for the first time, my mind raced with questions about the plot. Even as a little child, I understood that there was something morally questionable about a plot that calls for kidnapping young girls and having them serve as wives against their will, beautifully told as it may have been in the musical genre. Well, last week my sense of unease about this became justified. Turns out that three brothers (or was it only one?— the full truth is yet to be revealed) in Ohio had kidnapped three girls to serve as wives for the past ten years. To make matters worse, none of these alleged kidnappers looked like Howard Keel and it’s very unlikely they can dance to the choreography of Agnes DeMille. And it happened in Cleveland — not the beautifully scenic wild West, where “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” took place. Then, this week, the Pentagon admitted to USA Today that a military officer overseeing sexual assault prevention in Fort Hood, Texas, has been relieved of his duties due to allegations of abusive sexual contact and forcing subordinates into prostitution. As it turns out, this was not the first case of an officer in charge of preventing sexual abuse in the military being caught committing the very abuse they are responsible for preventing. I can think of no greater crime than taking away someone’s freedom and right to choose what to do with their body. Of course, there are those who actually like the abuse. As Zsa Zsa Gabor once said, “There is something about a man who hits you,” in describing her sexual turnon for men who beat her up. If that’s your

scene, I have nothing to say about it. But that is not the case for the majority of victims of sexual abuse and bondage. The Pentagon reports that, in a 2-year study, there have been some 26,000 unreported incidents of sexual assault in the military, and 3,374 cases that were reported. Of those, 25% refused to press charges. Of those who did press charges, only 238 resulted in convictions. Of the convictions, a significant number were overturned by superior officers. One might think this is an issue related to women in the military. But as it turns out, the majority of cases of total assaults were those where the victim was a man. The vast majority of cases that were not reported or where the victim refused to press charges, were cases involving male on male abuse. Mind you, the majority of these incidents took place before “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” was repealed. So this is not an issue that has to do with gays in the military. It’s an issue of one human being taking away another human being’s freedom. The high rate of unreported cases and has to do with the stigma faced by a man having been sexually assaulted by another man, and with fear of retribution. But that doesn’t leave the gay community off the hook. There are plenty of cases of (often older) men who keep harems of young studs who put up with years of abuse because they have found themselves in a place of desperation. Sometimes, these cases are right under

our nose. Sometimes, they exist across the street from where we live or work. And it doesn’t have to involve ropes or incarceration. Abuse and bondage is evident even when it is implied that the victim must perform sexual favors in order to keep their job, get a promotion, or stay out of jail. Sexual assault occurs when it is imposed on someone too young to be able to consent. We know about these cases and often joke about them, and we accept them as the norm of being gay. On last week’s episode of “Mad Men,” Don Draper locks his mistress in a hotel room, taking all her clothes with him. He has new clothes delivered to her. But it’s not for going out. It’s for her to dress and undress exclusively for him. His idea is that she will never leave the hotel. She will exist in the room solely for his pleasure. Finally, the woman understands what is going on and brings the relationship to an end. Even in the pre-women’s liberation of the early 20th Century Paris, Colette’s characters come to their senses and “Gigi” gets married to the man she loves, rather than live the life of a courtesan. In “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,” created in the politically incorrect 1950s, Jane Powell convinces Howard Keel that the brides must be returned to their families. So too, in the gay world, we must change what we now consider to be “acceptable” relationships where one individual is taking advantage of another’s weakness to create state of abuse or bondage against their will.

Obama To Grads: Be The Best Husband To Your Boyfriend

Illinois May Be The Next To Legalize Same-Sex Marriage

60 votes. Garcia stated, “I believe we’re there. The cake is baked, we’re waiting for the icing.” If the bill isn’t passed soon, Garcia is worried that the delay will give anti-gay organizations time to oppose the issue in numbers.

Herndon Graddick Resigns As President Of GLAAD New York, NY – Just a year after he became the president of GLAAD, Herndon Graddick has resigned. The resignation came as a bit of a shock to LGBT Americans, especially those that looked to GLAAD for support in the past year. Graddick’s work with the organization over the past year was groundbreaking: he fought the Boy Scouts gay-ban and brought transgendered issues center stage – something that has been neglected within the community for a long time. Graddick released a statement in which

he told the public that he will “look forward to returning to a private life and supporting the fight from behind the scenes.” Graddick left the organization feeling confident and proud, stating, “I’m proud to leave GLAAD with a stronger, more efficient organization and an incredibly talented and experienced Board and staff. I’m happy the role I was able to play in advancing the need for our community to fully support the rights of our transgender brothers and sisters.”

Brittney Griner Was Encouraged By Coach To “Stay In The Closet” Bristol, CT – Brittney Griner has told ESPN that her college coach, Kim Mulkey, discouraged players (including Griner) from being open about their sexuality. Griner says, “It was a recruitment thing.

The coaches thought that if it seemed like they condoned it, people wouldn’t let their kids come play for Baylor.” While Griner’s sexuality wasn’t a secret to her teammates or friends, she was told to keep it under wraps when speaking to the general public. “It was more of an unwritten law [to not discuss your sexuality] … it was kind of, like, one of those things, you know, just don’t do it. They kind of tried to make it, like, ‘Why put your business out on the street like that?’” Though Mulkey declined to comment on Griner’s allegations, she stated: “Brittney Griner represented Baylor University proudly on and off the basketball court, and she leaves behind an incredible legacy. I cannot comment on personal matters surrounding any of our student-athletes, but I can tell you Brittney will always be a celebrated member of the Baylor family.” Griner is currently preparing for her first WNBA season with the Phoenix Mercury.

Chicago, IL – Illinois same-sex marriage advocates have until May 31 to pass the “Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act.” If the bill fails to pass before May 31, it may be months before it gets approved. Jim Bennett, Midwest regional director for Lambda Legal says, “I have absolutely no doubt we’re going to be done with this by May 31 – I believe that this bill is going to pass.” While he didn’t give an exact count, Bennett did say that the bill could be called and passed any day now. Policy adviser for The Civil Rights agenda, Rick Garcia, said he thinks the bill has the required

Atlanta, GA – During a commencement speech for Morehouse College, President Obama made some statements that came up somewhat unexpectedly. During his speech that touched on themes of discrimination and oppression, he made discreet comments in support of gay families. Following a statement that stressed the importance of providing for a family – the school is known for its predominantly black, all-male student body – Obama told students “That’s what I’m asking all of you to do: Keep setting an example for what it means to be a man. Be the best husband to your wife, or your boyfriend, or your partner. Be the best father you can be to your children. Because nothing is more important.” When the students started to gossip in reaction, the president raised his finger to silence them in order to drive his point home. He drew parallels between African-American equality and LGBT equality, stating the “sting of discrimination” is an experience that many Americans can share. Obama went on to speak of LGBT discrimination, saying, “gay and lesbian Americans feel it when a stranger passes judgment on their parenting skills, or the love they can share.”

ean Doherty and Vero Leroux have worked very hard to get where they are today. Jean was only 17 when she left Ireland to move to France to pursue her dreams. While she had a great childhood and family life, she wanted to get away from her life in Ireland and branch out a bit. She lived in Lyon, teaching English to adults via different companies over time. Vero was born in South France, so it was imminent that fate was doing its job. Vero met Jean at her first job, where Jean offered to train her and take her under her wing. After the two found that they got along well, they hit it off and have been practically attached at the hip ever since. Just before Vero and Jean left France, they owned a Tex-Mex restaurant. They were one of the only Tex-Mex restaurants in the region, and had a successful 15 years of business before they decided to move to America. The couple moved to America after Jean’s biological daughter went off to college. They decided there was nothing left for them in Europe and that a new adventure was in order. Jean and Vero sold both of their businesses and began to take the necessary precautions to move to the US. Unfortunately, since gay marriage was not legal at the time, they were required to each invest $100,000 (as opposed to $100k split between a heterosexual couple.) They sold their life’s work, packed up their belongings and set out to live the American dream. Jean and Vero bought a restaurant on Oakland Park Blvd down by the beach, which they described as a “nightmare.” They lost virtually all of their money in the

space, eventually selling it for $30,000, a mere fraction of their original investment. After selling the property and investing the money into a small space in Wilton Manors, the couple hit their stride. Le Patio is a fine European comfort food restaurant right in the heart of Wilton Manors. Its menu is extensive and made fresh to order. Actually fresh, not fresh out of the freezer. The couple does prep work every morning in a secret, undisclosed space before bringing it to the restaurant where it is then cooked to order. The space is reminiscent of small restaurants or cafes in France and Amsterdam, with a beautiful back patio that really delivers charm and beauty without overdoing it. The entrees are reasonably priced while the portions are undeniably generous. The hearty comfort foods aim to tantalize and excite your taste buds while the space itself

relaxes and cradles you, transporting you to the south of France. Back to Jean and Vero’s roots. The couple came from across the world, lost everything and then opened a successful restaurant with a mere $10 in their bank account. Thankfully, their persistence and hard work has literally paid off in the end. The couple says that it’s crucial for small business owners to participate in their business as much as possible. Jean and Vero devote all of their time and energy to the business, which is why they’ve become such a great success story. The most important thing? “Don’t lose faith,” they say. Work hard, dream big and most importantly, never give up. If you’re struggling with a hardship, remember to stay positive. If you own a business, keep trying new things until you find that piece that works.

Steve Martin is a man of many talents. In 2009, the actor/comedian surprised fans when he played the banjo alongside the bluegrass band, Steep Canyon Rangers, in a live broadcast of “A Prairie Home Companion.” The statement was certainly surprising, but what was more shocking was how well Martin did on the banjo. He continued to tour with them on select dates for their 2009-2010 tour, as well as a 2011 television appearance on UK’s critically acclaimed music show, “Later with Jools Holland.” His performances with the band earned the collaboration an Entertainers of the Year award at the International Bluegrass Music Association Awards in 2011. Their collaborative record with Martin released the same year, “Rare Bird Alert,” debuted at #1 on the Billboard’s Bluegrass chart and at #43 on the Billboard Top 200. 8 p.m. Kravis

American realist painter William Glackens was an influential artist who also doubled as one of the founders of the Ashcan School of American Art. Glackens’ style and subject matter changed throughout the course of his life, starting with daily life in New York and Paris, circa Pre-World War I. Later his work evolved into a brighter collection, influenced strongly by Renoir. Although he eventually distanced himself from the Ashcan school and The Eight, he is still considered an integral part of the realist movement. 10 a.m. Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale. 1 E Las Olas Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33301.

MOELLEUX AU CHOCOLAT

RECIPE

BY CHEF JEAN DOHERTY

T

his ultra moist little cake with the soft “sunken” center should be served warm, its velvety molten chocolate flowing seductively onto the plate…it’s easy to make and sinfully delicious. • 2/3 cup butter, plus more for greasing • 4 ounces dark chocolate, chopped • 4 eggs • 2/3 cup sugar • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour Butter 6 ramekins and line with a disk of parchment paper, and then butter the parchment. In a double boiler, bowl or saucepan, very gently melt the butter and chocolate together over a “bain-marie” or water bath. In a separate mixing bowl, beat the eggs and sugar until thick, pale, and ribbony (use an electric mixer, or just break out a sweat!) Beat in the flour, and finally the chocolate mixture. Pour the

mixture into the ramekins and chill. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Place the ramekins on a baking sheet, and bake until the top is set, that will take about 12 to 14 minutes. Remove. Let sit for 5 minutes, before unmolding onto your serving dishes. Serve with any kind of fresh fruit , or if you like, whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.... you are the chef. Although born in Dublin, Ireland, Chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.

mixed lettuce. Eat now and worry later. It’s that good. Need smaller fare? The Starters Menu is the place to graze. The Ahi Tuna Nachos ($15) features sushi grade Ahi tuna tartare, scallions, seaweed salad, and sesame seeds, lightly laced with a powerful wasabi sauce and soy reduction on crispy wontons. Coconut Shrimp ($9.50) that’s been dredged in coconut and fried crunchy crisp. The chili sauce that accompanies the dish is horseradish hot, and counters the coconut sweet flavor with a dynamic flare. Or try the Mozzarella Moons ($8) for true decadence. It doesn’t get richer than three moon-shaped pieces of mozzarella cheese, flash fried and served with roasted tomato sauce. One doesn’t often find Fried Pickles ($7) on a menu. But they’re at Alibi’s and they are a hit. Forget what you might know about Fried Green Tomatoes. Alibi’s Signature Fried Pickles are a sweet/sour delight, served with ranch dressing. And don’t think you can eat just one. Impossible. Our all-time favorite dish continues to rank at the top of the new menu: Alibi’s Famous Chicken Chili ($4). This is a thick, not-too-spicy bit of heaven that comes with a quartet of multicolor chips as garnish. It’s housemade, it’s white meat, and it’s um-um good. Tacos come in pairs with dinner or singles a la carte. The Alibi way , available as Pork ($10/5), Chicken $(10/5) and Mahi Mahi ($$11/6), with soft grilled flour tortillas. Add any cheese, caramelized onions, sautéed mushrooms, sautéed peppers, bacon, avocado or chicken chili for $1 each. hose baby sandwiches called Sliders are hot menu items, making appearances across America in restaurants that range from country clubs to Country & Western. Now add Wilton Manors’ Alibi to the list. In this latest incarnation, the Alibi Sliders versions come in trios, dished up on a single platter and housed within fresh Challah buns. Grilled Chicken ($10), with cranberry compote, grilled cheese, red onion, and lettuce; Pulled Pork ($10), with chipotle mayo ($10); traditional Beef Burger ($10), American cheese, bacon, jam and chipotle mayo ($10); and Grilled Mahi Mahi ($11), with Monterey Jack cheese and pineapple sauce. These babies are moist, succulent, and hearty, with the Grilled Chicken easily the most exciting with its subtle fruit undertones. The addition of Sliders to Alibi’s extensive café menu is a move by the bar and grill to lighten their recipe line-up that has traditionally been heavy on burgers, for which they were both famous and award winning. Keeping with that theme, the assortment of salads has been lightened as well. The size is still a bowlful, though available in large and small sizes. The most creative use of ingredients is presented in a salad labeled the Island House ($10 large/$6 small), which combines bleu cheese, dried strawberries, sliced seasonal fruit, sunflower seeds and plantain chips over delightful mixed greens. Coupled with a Balsamic vinaigrette dressing, the flavor-combination is a surprisingly light and sweet experience that is a popular choice for those watching their waistlines. The typical Garden Salad ($3.50) and the traditional Chicken Cobb ($12 large/$7 small) with an assortment of dressings is less exciting, but no less filling. Ditto: the Iceberg Wedge ($8 large/$5 small). For those less worried about calories, particularly those with large appetites, a sensational Grilled Sliced Steak ($12 large/$8 small) is unique for its matchbook potatoes, red onions, chopped tomatoes, scallions, and

ood poisoning is one of the largest common infectious diseases next to the common cold. While food poisoning comes in many different varieties, all have special unpleasant qualities about them. Hospitals report an average of 6-10 million cases a year and this number reflects only a fraction of the estimated real cases that go unreported. 9,000 of these cases end in death. Food poisoning is a general term for the 250 ways food can be contaminated. The term applies to gastroenteritis and the occasional nervous system complications resulting from bacterial or viral contamination of food. Infestations of raw and undercooked meats with parasites also fall within this category. There are many ways these diseases can spread to your food before it goes on your plate. It can be contaminated during the harvesting process. Unwashed pesticides and fertilizers accompanied by rodent and bug problems during the harvesting process can be a major contributing factor to an attack of food poisoning. Products can also be contaminated during the packing process, with unclean containers another major contributing factor when it comes to spreading infectious diseases. Finally it can also be contaminated during the transport of any product. Symptoms of food poisoning include diarrhea and vomiting. Abdominal cramping and headaches may persist at this point and a fever may break out. These symptoms usually last from 12-36 hours depending on the severity of the amount of consumption of the contaminated food and the type of infectious disease. Botulism is one of the most common food poisons particularly among home canned goods, contaminated vegetables, fruits, condiments and fishes. Symptoms appear within 18-36 hours and can include muscle incoordination, difficulty in chewing, swallowing and breathing, and may increase to respiratory failure and even death. E Coli is another popular disease coming from undercooked meats or unpasteurized dairy

products. Salmonella is a chart-topping disease found in infected meat producing animals, undercooked poultry products, raw milk, raw eggs and egg products. Symptoms occur within 12-48 hours and usually include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever and abdominal pain and cramping. These symptoms can last from one to four days. Trichinella is another common disease stemming from undercooked pork that has been fed contaminated meat. Symptoms of trichinella include fever, diarrhea and respiratory pain and problems. Staphylococcus Aureus is commonly spread by food handlers who have skin infections that touch others foods before eating. Symptoms show up quickly, within 2-8 hours and cause severe nausea and vomiting. This can be accompanied by abdominal cramps, headaches and fever. Fighting back against these infectious diseases requires both good nutrition and bed rest. When you feel confident that your system has settled down and you are ready to handle ingesting foods again, gradually introduce the BRAT diet. BRAT is short for bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. Use this diet 24-48 hours after contracting one of these diseases. After 48 hours, start to introduce non-spiced foods to your diet, such as chicken and mashed potatoes. When you are sure the body has begun to acclimate itself back to enjoying food again then incorporate fresh fruits and vegetables, along with healthy grains and cereals, dairy products and cheeses. Lean cuts of meats can then be introduced back into the diet for optimal health. Being aware of what you put in your mouth should be on your mind at all times, but when it comes to infectious diseases you can ingest, be exceptionally cautious. Taking a few extra minutes to be sure your food is safe can keep you from a few days sick in bed. Andy Kress is a certified fitness trainer and nutritional counselor. BUILDING A MYSTERY An Interview with Lesbian Novelist Anne Laughlin

Q & A

/floridaagenda

BY GREGG SHAPIRO

L

May 22, 2013 H 24

Gregg Shapiro: How much of Anne, if any, is in Jan? Anne Laughlin: I’m not consciously aware of any part of me being in Jan Roberts. Her background is unique and makes her a singular personality. Plus, if I say that Jan represents a part of me, it feeds the assumption that there’s a part of me in every main character I write. While this may sometimes be true, it’s a problematic presumption when I write erotica [laughs]! GS: Jan’s past definitely defines who she is. Do you think that’s true of most people or do you think it’s possible to leave the past behind? AL: I do think people’s past shapes them. It’s unavoidable. The question in my mind is how much of a damaging past do we drag along with us? Speaking from my own experience, I don’t think you can be anything but adversely affected by the survival skills you learn as a child. In other words, Jan needs therapy. GS: “Runaway” deals with a variety of topics, including militia groups, surviv-

alists and disaffected suburban youth – what inspired you to write about those subjects? AL: The truth about “Runaway” is that I wrote the prologue to it as an exercise, liked it quite a bit, and then appended a plot that plausibly stems from it. Why that prologue dealt with a teenager escaping an isolated Idaho survivalist camp is a complete mystery to me, but it left me with those three topics - teenagers, militia, and survivalists. I wasn’t aware these were topics I wanted to write about, but I had a lot of fun doing so. The research was fascinating. GS: I hadn’t previously given much thought to LGBT folks involved in militia activity, but those characters exist in “Runaway.” AL: My guess would be that gay people in the survivalist/militia world are as rare as a woman wearing trousers in Afghanistan [laughs]. But we should also assume they do exist, as we do everywhere. My character Kristi, a member of a survivalist group and aware of her sexuality, is somewhat of a desperate follower from a desperate area of rural Michigan. Her sexuality is the not the first need of hers that has to be met. GS: As a writer of mysteries, it’s interesting that in “Runaway” you write “I like mystery in books. Not in love.” AL: When Catherine says those words to Jan, she’s responding to a common frustration of those trying to form a relationship with one of those people dragging their past along with them. Jan doesn’t understand what opening up to another person is. She’s unreadable. I agree with Catherine - I want to have some idea of what’s ahead with the person I’ve fallen in love with. Unpredict-

esbian novelist Anne Laughlin, the author of the 2012 Lambda Literary Award finalist “Runaway” (Bold Strokes Books), as well as “Veritas and The Collectors,” has chalked up a few honors during her writing career. The recipient of a couple of Goldies from the Golden Crown Literary Society, she was selected as a Lambda Literary Foundation Emerging Writer Fellow in 2008. Laughlin was also a finalist in the 2013 Saints and Sinners Literary Festival Short Fiction Contest for her short story “It Only Occurred to Me Lately.” “Runaway,” a mystery with romance elements, follows Chicago-based private investigator Jan as she searches for Maddy, a suburban teenage runaway. What begins as a seemingly ordinary case soon develops into something much more. Maddy’s possible connection to a radical group echoes something from Jan’s past that she had hoped to leave behind her. To make matters worse, a passionate workplace romance with Jan’s new boss Catherine threatens to not only derail her investigation, but also the life she has worked so hard to keep concealed. I spoke with Laughlin about her work and what’s next for the author on her

ability may be overrated [laughs]. GS: You also cover the subjects of workplace romances and infidelity. Like mystery, are those topics better left to books than real life? AL: This is such an interesting question, because in the world of genre lesbian fiction (and I generalize here), the first subject is common and the second is considered taboo by many. I think we all know that workplace romances and infidelity are not uncommon in the real world, often in tandem. In lesbian fiction, infidelity strikes a deep chord, and not in a good way. Readers simply don’t like it, especially in romance. There are two things that I think soften the blow in “Runaway”: the book is meant to be primarily a suspense story with a love story secondary to that, and I make it clear that Catherine’s relationship back home is all done but for the shouting. Catherine is not the noblest character, but I don’t believe she’s required to be. GS: Without giving away too much about the ending, was it always your intention for the book to come full circle? AL: It was my intention to have Jan have a confrontation with her past at the end of the book. I just had no idea how that was going to come about. GS: Do you have plans to write about Jan in other books – make her a recurring character in a series? AL: It’s possible, but there are no plans for it now. I need to ponder the fact that there were a lot of negative responses to Catherine. Should I keep her the same or dump her? Rehabilitate her? Have her make Jan’s life miserable, or set Jan free? I don’t have a clear idea on that yet.

GS: If there was a movie version of “Runaway,” who would you want to play Jan? AL: My partner Linda and I took this one on together, including doing a search on the internet for actors between the ages of 35-45. Truly, not one actor came leaping to mind. I usually don’t have the clearest idea of what my characters look like. We came up with Hilary Swank, Charlize Theron, and a younger Jody Foster and Sharon Stone, all butched up a bit. GS: Who would you want to play Catherine? AL: Catherine needs to have a feminine presence and also be able to take down an armed man single handedly. Claire Danes? A younger Sigourney Weaver or Annette Benning? Honestly, this is the hardest question you’ve asked me [laughs]. GS: Who would you want to play Maddy? AL: AL: How about my 16-year old niece [laughs]? I don’t know any actors in this age group. GS: “Runaway,” and its predecessor “Veritas” are both mysteries. As someone who write genre fiction – do you have a favorite lesbian mystery writer? AL: Katherine Forrest, JM Redmann, and an Irish writer no one here’s heard of, Ingrid Black. Val McDermid mainly writes for a mainstream readership, but she usually has a strong secondary lesbian character or two in her books. I’m sure I’m forgetting plenty of others. GS: You have racked up a number of awards for your books and “Runaway” is also a Lammy Award nominee. What is your opinion of awards? AL: They mean nothing when I don’t win and are brilliant when I do [laughs]. I wish. That sort of self-assurance would be relief to me. In truth, I’m morose when I lose and convinced someone made a mistake when I win [laughs]. GS: Have you started working on your next book? AL: I’m about a third of the way through my next book. It’s the story of a brand new private investigator that left the Chicago Police Department after being hospitalized for Bipolar disorder. We’ll see how she does.

small business blend together in an effort to stay ahead of a fast changing consumer curve.” As a member of the LGBT community, Spencer know that it presents an entirely unique set of challenges—“Everything from how their inter-personal relationships are viewed by the business population at large to the greater amount of disposal income that they have available in the marketplace and therefore are more likely to be engaged in business ventures,” he says. “I’ve had many clients who are simple more comfortable with a law firm that caters to the sensitivities of the gay community. Because of the issues that may arise in the course of litigations—whether it be their unique home life or some minor criminal offenses that have been used a weapon by the opposition in the best, we’re ready for those challenges.” According to Spencer, the most important

element that he brings to the table is impeccable ethics. “Opening an office in Wilton Manors has given me a specific (and rather eye-opening) experience of the way this town operates. There are many progressive thinkers here; just as there are those who are adamantly opposed to change. I’ve always been more on the mover and shaker side of life,” he says. “My dear friend and my business client, Leor Barak of New York Grilled Cheese Co., was my first Wilton Manors client. And during these months of opening up, it has been a learning curve for both of us to discover the community and introduce ourselves into it. That is why it is so special to me to have this opportunity to sponsor the MMP Mixer on Wednesday May 29, at 6:30 p.m. (2207 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors), and get to know each and everyone of you.”

here is a dramatic scalloped table centered in the foyer of the law offices of Spencer Jenkins. Inlayed with various woods and positioned for effect, the table is reflective of the new legal practice headquartered in Wilton Manors at 2550 NE 15th Ave. (754-444-8830). Designed to impress, yet fully functional and sturdy in its most basic. Spencer is a recent transplant from New England to the balmy weather of South Florida, and the transition has taken the attorney a few months of adjustment—such is the nature of the pace and attitudes to be found here. “At first I thought that the slow pace was going to be detrimental to my active pace style,” Spencer reflected, “but then I discovered that there is a lot to be discovered when you slow down the process and have time to savor the moments.” While Spencer is young, it is the kind of highenergy youth that finds nothing impossible. “While I am new as a small business, and I am new as a sole practitioner, I am not new to the law, and have an extensive background working with big-city law firms.,” he said. “I have a really, really unique set of qualifications. I was educated in Boston, and anyone who has ever gone to school in Boston knows that it comes with an old school founding-father mentality. That translated into my New York experience where I was doing very high-end, high-value transactional work. And then here, in Florida, where I began a more personalize service, which became more community and small business focused.” Fortunately, he brought a lot of those big city resources with him. “Technologically, my firm is at the top of its game,.” He says. “The infrastructure has allowed for a lot of automated systems that keeps our costs lower for our clients. Since I am a small business myself, I know what it takes to contain costs to maximize profits. I realize that my clients don’t have endless pools of resources, so we optimize what money is available, and network between individuals to keep things controllable. “I am a commercial civil litigator. And I do business transactional work. My effort has been approaching small businesses working on those transactional types of matters that they would encounter in the course of business as well as traditional lawsuits that any active business is likely to encounter. Additionally, I’ve been actively involved in corporate mergers as

he roar you heard echoing in the air last week through much of the Mid-West came from a crowd of thousands that had gathered on the lawn of the state Capitol of Minnesota. It was quite an historical moment when Governor Mark Dayton signed a law legalizing gay marriage in the state effective August 1. When Minnesota became the 12th state in the nation to formalized same-sex marriage, it was a game-changer in the Mid-West. Just two years ago, there was a failed push to pass a constitutional amendment banning samesex weddings. Now, the wedding planners have switched into high gear. So too have the bars, clubs, restaurants and gyms. Minneapolis and its twin-city St. Paul sit on the banks of the Mississippi River in a culturally diverse area. It was once the world’s flour milling capital and a timber giant. Today, it is still the home to General Mills, one of the world’s largest food companies. Translation: there is a lot of space in Minnesota, so a rental car is required to cover the turf. There is a daily four-hour non-stop flight to Minneapolis from Fort Lauderdale on Delta Airlines that conveniently leaves at 3:35 p.m. each day. It is a short 12-mile trip into the city (average taxi fare $40.00). Hotels abound in the City of Lakes, with the hip favorite: The Foshay— a W Hotel (821 Marquette Ave S), a landmark that soars into the skyline and gives chic an entirely new name. If the $300 a night room rate is a little on the high side for Daddy, suggest finding digs at the Hilton Garden Inn Minneapolis where $199.00 gets you a large

COURTESY OF SIMPLYIRRESISTIBLE

room with a sweeping view of the magnificent city skyline. When it’s time to hit the town and dance into sunrise, head to The Saloon (830 Hennepin Ave--9th & Hennepi) and find a younger crowd who are good looking and know all the right steps. Find strippers there on Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday, and expect lean, smooth, and muscular cookie cutter hotties. For something more levi/leather oriented, the Minneapolis Eagle (515 Washington Ave S) is part of a complex that includes the Underground Dance Club (501 Washington Ave S) and a Bolt Video Bar (513 Washington Ave S). The

leather community in Minnesota is a strong one, with the accent on fun more than traditional straps, chains and whips. There is a rather classy strip joint in town called the Brass Rail (422 Hennepin Ave), which at one time was about as trashy as they come. It’s now been totally remodeled and is safe, clean and sexy. The joint attracts men and women, and all seem to coexist in a Chippendale’s-style atmosphere, which has its own sexy charm. The Firm (1010 North 2nd Ave at Colfax) is one of those workout plants where high energy seems to come pumped through the AC. Though this fitness

club’s main attraction is a full day/ night of classes, the nice-sized gym and free weight area does nicely as a homeaway-from-home for the more physical among us. The Mall of America (60 E Broadway), in nearby Bloomington, Minnesota, has over 500 stores and some 2,775,000 square feet of floor space, making it the second largest mall in the United States. (The largest is in King of Prussia, PA.) Even at second best, the Mall of America is SO big that it would take over an entire week to explore all of its stores. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus, and he shops at Mall of America.
