It was just time. I’ve been living here (in Wilton Manors) for eight years and my commute to work was killing me [laughs]. What was it about Wilton Manors that made you want to open a Hunters location here? I love the dynamics of Wilton Drive. I love how it has so much to offer. I was hoping that we can offer something new and different. Add to the experience on the drive.
ocated in the space formerly occupied by Boom, at the Shoppes of Wilton Manors, the newly opened Hunters Nightclub (2232 N Wilton Drive) marks nightlife impresario Mark Hunter’s foray into the booming Wilton Manors club scene. A native of Chicago’s Northwest suburbs, Hunter owned and operated the original Hunters in Elk Grove Village, Illinois for more than 30 years before selling the business. He also found time to open a Hunters location in Palm Springs, which remains in operation today. I spoke with Hunter, a Wilton Manors resident, about his newlyopened location right in the center of The Drive. Gregg Shapiro: How long have you been in the bar business? Mark Hunter: I’ve been in the bar business a little over 31 years. We opened in [the] Chicago [suburb of Elk Grove Village] in 1982. We just recently sold it in September 2013. How did you get started in the bar business? I was a professional ballroom dancer, competitor at one time. I really loved doing it, but I really wasn’t loving it. I decided one night after being at (the bar) Charlie’s Angels (in the Chicago suburb of Niles), “I’m going to open a gay bar! [laughs].”
What do you like best about being in that line of work That’s a hard question. I really don’t know. I just loved it all. For instance, are you a night person and it works well with your schedule? Absolutely! When I was ballroom dancing, when I was teaching, I was working from two in the afternoon to 10 at night; which were perfect hours to go out and party all night long. I didn’t have to get to work until two in the afternoon [laughs]. In what year did you open Hunters in Palm Springs and why did you decide to open a bar there? We opened in 1998. I was enjoying the bar business so much that I really wanted to open another one. I wanted to make sure that it was in a warm location; a warmer than Chicago location. We scouted out several cities. We scouted out Dallas, Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Diego; some of the warmer areas. There was the most potential in Palm Springs at the time.
Did they all plan to be here at the same time or were they here separately? They were here separately. They know each other. The week before there was another one, a very good customer that was in from Chicago. With locations in Palm Springs and Wilton Manors, how did you decide to make Wilton Manors you home? I love Palm Springs very much but I just feel at home here in South Florida. Do you think it’s because, having grown up in Chicago with its lakefront and beaches, that that was the draw? Yes, there is water here, and I’m a Pisces. I’ve got to have the water nearby. Do you have plans to open more Hunters locations in other cities? [Laughs] You just never know.
7
What was involved in the recent decision to sell the Hunters location in the Chicago suburb of Elk Grove Village?
Wilton Manors is a popular spot with people from Chicago, for both vacation and relocation. Since you have been in Wilton Manors, have you run into any old friends and/or customers from the Hunters location up north? Absolutely. Just this last weekend we had four of Hunters Chicago’s very good customers down here all the same time [laughs].

Charlie’s Angels would occasionally do a cabaret night. Did you do something similar at the original Hunters or was it strictly a dance club? Hunters was basically a dance club. We did do cabaret from time to time. We did have a piano player during Happy Hour. Amy Armstrong came out and did a couple of shows. Honey West would come out and do shows.

SUNSHINE STATE Stonewall Festival’s Uncertain Future
WELLS FARGO 5-POINTS DONATES $10,000 TO PRIDE CENTER
Last week at a city meeting, two groups announced their interest in producing the 2014 Stonewall Festival/Summer Pride, but city commissioners just didn’t couldn’t come to a decision. City Manager Joseph Gallegos pre-sented the issue to commissioners at the meeting, but when they couldn’t come to a decision on the matter, they returned it to Gallegos. Marc Hansen of Pride South Florida and Bobby Kyser of Panache Style both showed interest in producing the event, but commissioners simply couldn’t seem to voice their thoughts. “I have no opinion,” Commissioner Tom Green said, according to the Sun Sentinel. “I’d agree to each one,” said Commissioner Scott Newton. “I have a tremendous amount of respect for both groups,” said Vice Mayor Julie Carson, reports Larry Barszewksi of the Sun

After no commissioner could come to a decision, Green motioned that Gallegos returns with a recommendation. The motion passed with a 3-2 vote.

Equality Florida to Honor Two Local Trailblazers Tallahassee, FL – Equality Florida Institute announced that they will present the Voice for Equality Award to Allan Hendricks and Rand Hoch at the 1st Annual Palm Beach reception on February 12. Honoree Rand Hoch has been fighting for the community in Palm Beach County for 25 years now. In 1998, he founded the Palm Beach Human Rights Council. Hoch has helped pass more than 65 ordinances and policies that have helped to extend equal rights and benefits to the Palm Beach County LGBT community, including domestic partnership benefits, tax equity
reimbursements and anti-bullying initiatives. After becoming Florida’s first openly gay judge in 1992, Hoch has served on the board of multiple organizations. Allan Hendricks, a native of West Palm Beach, serves as Equality Florida’s Palm Beach County Steering Committee Chair. Hendricks has led the local equality team since 2006, when he formed a monthly meeting to connect Palm Beach to statewide LGBT efforts. In the eight years since, Hendricks has led faith outreach, anti-bullying education, multiple events and statewide/local lobby efforts. Hendricks also served on multiple boards and groups. The “wedding-themed” event will include an open bar and hors d’oeuvres and a “State of the State” address by Equality Florida CEO and President, Nadine Smith. In her statement, Smith will discuss the longawaited information on the marriage equality lawsuit that was recently filed. “This is a pivotal moment in the LGBT movement, and Florida stands on the front line of Southern states in achieving full equality,” said Smith. “We are honored to be able to spotlight the achievements of two people who have contributed so much to bring our state to this tipping point.”
KATY PERRY AND MADONNA PAY TRIBUTE TO LGBT RUSSIANS

Salem, OR – This fall, voters in oregon might be facing two LGBT-related issues on the ballot: One would offer marriage equality for the state, while the other would allow privately-owned businesses to refuse service based on the marital status of gay couples. The movement for equality in has allegedly gained more than enough signatures to make it to the ballot in November, which could make Oregon the next state to legalize same-sex marriage. According to Reuters, the religious exemption would allow bakeries, florists, and other businesses to refuse service to same-sex couples based on the owner’s religious beliefs. While there is an existing nondiscrimination law in Oregon that protects discrimination based on the basis of sexual orientation, the proposed initiative would essentially overturn parts of the law. While there are many supporters of the religious exemption, equal rights activists are prepared for a lengthy battle. “This is not a sideshow issue,” James Esseks of the American Civil Liberties

The bill does state that it would allow schools to house “alternate bathroom accommodations” for transgender students upon request. The bill also defines the term “gender” as the “either male or female phenotype designation of an individual as documented by the individual’s birth certificate,” or “a signed, written documentation from a physician.” The definition also states that “gender” does not include an individual’s own opinion of their gender. t first, LGBT activists began questioning CocaCola’s sponsorship of the Sochi Olympics. After all, why would one of the country’s best-selling products take part in something so, I don’t know, un-American? After a marketing project-gone-wrong made headlines (it presented users who typed in gay phrases with an “error,” asking them to try inputting their names again), it became clear that Coke was making some poor decisions. After being pressured, Coca-Cola issued a public apology, stating that they would never aim to discredit the LGBT community, priding themselves as “one of the world’s most inclusive brands.” What would the beverage giant do now? How could they ever capture the business of the entire country, let alone the entire world? Cue obligatory all-inclusive Superbowl ad. The ad, which featured a multilingual rendition of “America the Beautiful,” was beautiful in every sense of the word. It featured people from all walks of life (including the first gay parents in a Superbowl ad), centering on the fact that America is a cultural melting pot that we should celebrate, not denigrate. Sounds nice enough, right? Wrong. The commercial left a bitter taste in the mouths of
conservative pundits, who claim that the multilingual rendition of “America the Beautiful” evidently goes against everything that America stands for. This of course lead to many inappropriate tweets, containing racial slurs and my personal favorite – “We’re in America, so speak American!” Glenn Beck in particular was upset by the ad, which he believes is further dividing us as a country. (Just try to contain your laughter for a moment here.) “...Why did you need that to divide us politically?” asked Beck. “Because that’s all this ad is. It’s in your face, and if you don’t like it, if you’re offended by it, you’re a racist. If you do like it, you’re for immigration. You’re for progress. That’s all this is: to divide people.” That’s right people, Glenn Beck is actually sort of right on this one. Coca-Cola, like many, have painted themselves into a corner here. A corner that happens to be extremely divided. They aren’t really sure who to apologize to at this point, and I don’t blame them. While I wouldn’t move to a country and just expect them to speak “American,” I don’t think it’s fair to write off a multilingual advertisement. After all, I’m fairly certain the “Americans” sounding off on this ad aren’t fully Native American anyways.

inclusiveness.” Should families choose to head to Orlando during Family Outfest, they will be offered (up to) 50% off for the entirety of their visit while staying at one of the host or official hotels. The event also cited one advantage that caught our eye: connecting with other gay parents. This is essentially an untapped market, and with Central Florida (and Florida in general) looking for ways to generate more revenue, it’s not at all surprising. “... This event is designed to bring families together from all around the world,” the official mission/description reads. “This event is a great way to create new friendships, learn new things (for you new parents out there) and connect with local LGBT families and allies.” Disney has yet to respond to the announcement, though registration and booking is now available online.

rlando, FL – Once a year, the gay community migrates to Disney World in droves (or Disney Land if you’re a West Coaster), dressed in red to show their pride. As South Floridians, we see Gay Days as an easy and fun weekend getaway, but for people in the surrounding states, it’s reason enough to travel to the Sunshine State. Though an extremely popular week for the city, Gay Days isn’t exactly an “official” Disney event. Now, Walt Disney Co. has announced their partnership behind Family Outfest, a week-long event for LGBT families set to debut this summer on July 1-7, in Orlando. The mission of the event is “to celebrate the shared cultural heritage of what all families look like, regardless of who you are, how you identify or whom you love,” according to an official mission statement posted on orlandogaytravel.com, the main source for the event (so far). Photos on the event’s page feature same-sex couples with children celebrating in various theme parks, including the iconic Magic Kingdom. The event boasts that with world class theme parks, attractions and restaurants, there is “no doubt together, we will have a gay ol’ time.” The event lists Disney as a “main partner,” along with Nickelodeon Suites Resort, Macy’s, and Hilton Orlando Lake Buena Vista, according to WFTV Orlando. The marketing push is a big one for Disney, who’s never officially attached the Disney name to anything LGBT-related. But the PR move isn’t exactly a surprising. The news comes just after Disney featured its first ever gay characters on a recent episode of the channel’s teen comedy, “Good Luck Charlie.” The characters (two mothers) are now being perceived as a nod to a more inclusive future for the network, but not all Disney lovers were satisfied with the episode. The group One Million Moms asked viewers to boycott the show, completely disregarding the fact that the show is wrapping up for good on February 16. “Just because something may be legal or because some are choosing a lifestyle doesn’t make it morally correct,” a statement from the organization read. “Disney should stick to entertaining instead of pushing an agenda. Disney decided to be politically correct versus providing family-friendly programming.” A Disney Channel spokesperson told TV Guide that the episode was created to include kids and families from all walks of life, focusing in part on community and diversity. “Like all Disney Channel programming, [the episode] was developed to be relevant to kids and families around the world and to reflect themes of diversity and

Whether it’s Pooh’s overeating, Piglet’s anxiety, Eeyore’s major depressive disorder, or Owl’s narcissism, the hundred acres woods clan need a lot of healing before they can reach any form of self-actualizing. Despite the underlying darkness hidden in the Pooh mythology, Kenny Loggins still managed to create a masterful children’s album and reworking of the title song “House at Pooh Corner” for his newborn son Luke back in 1990. The long jawed, sarcastic Leno has been labeled one of the good guys by his peers—hardworking, witty, sensitive and generous. Despite numerous controversial Late Night moments, including rifts with Letterman and, later, Conan, Leno maintained high ratings until recently. HEALTH
SQUATS: THE REIGNING SUPREME BY TOM BONANTI
L
ast week, I took a look at one of the most important weight training exercises for the upper body - the flat bench press. So now that your pecs are nice and sore, let’s turn our attention to the most crucial leg and lower body exercise, the squat. For anyone who is serious about weight training, you know that “leg day” is no walk in the park. Leg routines require, above all others, attention to proper form, serious concentration, and set after set of some of the most important and grueling exercises known in muscledom. In nearly every sport or daily activity, your legs are your most important asset. That’s why squats are often called the “king” of all exercises. The squat involves butt, hamstrings, calves, and quadriceps. In addition to being the best exercise for lower body,
squats also involve many upper body muscle groups as well, including deltoids, lats and traps, and abdominals. When you do squats, place a barbell on a squat rack or set up the bar on the Smith machine. Doing squats on a Smith Machine at the outset at least can be safer, but the apparatus does restrict the range of motion of your squat somewhat. Whichever you prefer, use light weight when you begin. Duck under the bar and position it across your shoulders on your trapezius, slightly above the rear deltoids. Grasp the bar using a grip width that is comfortable for your body and pull your elbows to the rear. Inhale deeply, rotate your pelvis forward, keep your head up, look straight ahead and carefully lift the bar off of the rack. Move back a step or two from the rack and set your feet shoulder width apart, keeping your toes pointed at an angle slightly outward.
Now, here is the most important caution regarding the squat. You must maintain a very erect body position when descending into the deep squat position. Leaning too far forward, or flexing the spine as you squat can be dangerous for your lower back. Once you have descended so your thighs are parallel to the floor, extend your legs and straighten your torso to return to the starting, upright position. There you have it, the perfect squat! I suggest 3 sets of eight to twelve repetitions in every leg training session. A couple of other pointers can help you do squats safely and effectively.
First, you should learn how to go down into the squat position so that you are low enough. The top of your thighs should be parallel to the floor in a well executed squat. If you stop the squat any higher than that, you will lose some of the benefit to your butt and hamstrings. Secondly, learn to breathe properly by inhaling as you descend and exhale as you come up. For more tips on how to build a strong lower body with weight training contact Tom Bonanti at trainertomb@aol. com. Check out my gym in Ft. Lauderdale www.pumpnincgym.com!

an Francisco, the city that practically invented gay, is one of the most popular destinations for LGBT travelers thanks to its friendly and welcoming culture of acceptance, as well as its wealth of art and culture and its thriving nightlife scene. It is home to more gay people per capita (16%) than any other American city. In March the city has a comfortable median temperature in the 70s, making it the perfect time to visit, round-trip airfares are less than $300 and, if that wasn’t enough to tempt you to travel to Bagdad by the Bay, here are a number of special events slated to seal the deal. Leather Alliance Weekend, Feb. 28 - March 2, is second only to the Folsom Street Festival in drawing leather daddies from across the globe. South of Market comes alive with the SOMA bars rolling out the leather carpet for this event-filled weekend. On Friday, Feb. 28 witness a roast of local Mr. San Francisco Leather (and 2013 International Mr. Leather), Andy Cross. Leather seminars fill Saturday afternoon and later that night it’s the Mr. San Francisco Leather contest. (For more information, go to www.leatheralliance.org.) Sure, L.A. is home to the Academy Awards, but S.F. is no slouch when it comes to celebrating the night. “Return to the Emerald City: Academy of Friends 34th annual Oscar Gala” on Sunday, March 2 benefits six Bay Area HIV/AIDS service agencies. Walk the red carpet, watch the awards show on multiple screens, sample food provided by the Bay Area’s finest restaurants and caterers and wine and champagne from amazing vintners, bid on silent auction must-haves, dance the night away and ogle your fellow guests in their best finery at this elegant soiree. Bunny, Heklina, Bianca Del Rio, Pandora Boxx and many more will trade barbs while looking fabulous. (For tickets got to www.thedragqueensofcomedy.eventbrite.com.) While in town you might also want take in a few tourist spots. Start with a tour of the Castro Theatre. This year, marks the Theatre’s 90th anniversary. It is one of the few legendary movie palaces that screens movies in addition to serving as a live performance space. For information on the tours and events, go to www.castrotheatre.com. Another great way to learn about the rich history of the neighborhood, long the hub of the gay community, is the walking tour “Come Out to the Castro.” (Go to www.foottours.com for more information.) Visiting the AIDS Memorial Grove in Golden Gate Park packs an emotional wallop. The living memorial honors all who have confronted this tragic pandemic. Pay tribute to those no longer with us, those who have shared their struggle, kept the vigils, and supported each other during their final hours (aidsmemorial.org.) Another powerful spot is Pink Triangle Park, where 15 granite pylons rise in remembrance of the estimated 15,000 gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgenders persecuted, imprisoned or killed during and after the Nazi regime. (Go to www.pinktrianglepark.org for more information.) Dolores Park, at the intersection of three distinct neighborhoods; the Castro, Mission District and Noe Valley, is a great spot to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the spectacular views of the city (and equally spectacular views of local hotties). Of course, no visit to San Francisco is complete without a ride on the historic streetcars on Market Street; it’s a great way to see the city. Stops can be found every few blocks along Market Street and The Embarcadero, between Castro and Fisherman’s Wharf. (For information on routes and rates check out www.streetcar.org.)

at every major and popular venue in south Florida, but highlights include Living Room Fort Lauderdale, Passion Nightclub, Griffin Nightclub, Clevelander, Bongos, Dream Hotel, Exit 66, and Victor Hotel. It’s pretty staggering actually.
Jeff Stewart: What made you decide to get into entertainment as a DJ and record producer? MAXIMUS 3000: I’ve always been in the arts. I have a background in visual art. When I was in college for an art degree (I actually attended college early, at just 15 years old), I began experimenting with music and visuals. It was a natural progression to fuse my background in art with my knowledge of music. Making people happy has always been a little joy for me, and DJing seemed to be an outlet. So one thing lead to another, and soon after some research, purchasing of some gear, lots of practice, some music theory studying and countless gigs perfecting my craft, I formed a fullyfledged mobile DJ company.
We’ve heard a little bit about you having a new app that’s going to be available for iPhones and Android. What’s that all about? I am very proud to announce my partnership with Appitmobile, INC. on an all new official Maximus 3000 mobile app. The app will feature a rich cross section of content including exclusive app-only podcasts, radio broadcasts, video mashups, downloads and more. There are even neat features including Foursquare/Facebook check-in integration, car/parking locator, VIP perks (including up to the minute updates on tour dates), and loyalty reward programs. As of the first week of January 2014, the APP is LIVE on iPhone, iPad, and Android devices. Download it today and leave me a message! e recently sat down with award-winning, Billboard chart-topping DJ, producer, philanthropist and social media guru Maximus 3000 to get the inside scoop on what he’s been up to and what he has planned for 2014.
How long have you been involved in being a DJ and a public figure in South Florida? Any special causes that you support? In 1995, I opened my Mobile Entertainment company, which I focused on until about 2001. Soon after, I landed some club gigs and festivals, and by 2003 was heavily focused on club DJing. Each year continues to outdo the next till this day. I’m proud to say that I’ve landed some coveted slots in almost every major festival here in South Florida, both LGBT oriented and other. These achievements
have skyrocketed my public profile and presence allowing me to ‘pay it forward’ with endorsement and support of some of the causes and organizations that matter to me, including Food for the Poor, INC, GLAAD, Humane Society, Women/ Kids in distress, Care Resource, Task Force, Poverello Food Bank, AHF, NVEEE and more. The most important and closest to home for me, is equal rights. What are some of the big clubs and events that you’ve spun for? I’ve performed at White Party, Winter Party, Miami Beach Gay Pride, Pridefest Fort Lauderdale, Come out with Pride Orlando, Art Basel, Stonewall Summer Pride, Celebrate Orgullo, New York City Pride, and even the Inc. 500 in 5000 conference in Washington D.C. as the official DJ. These events have placed me on stages with some artists that I truly admire, and have admired since my youth. I’ve had to pinch myself sometimes due to Andy Bell from Erasure, La India (who I ended up remixing and landing my first top 20 at number 3 billboard hit), Patti Labelle, Jennifer Holiday, Elvis Crespo, Adam Lambert, Flo Rida, and Expose’. I’ve pretty much spun
Is it also true that you’re available for private events and parties for people who would like to bring your special technique and entertainment to their private venue or home for a wedding or special occasion? I am, and always will be. The difference is that I started as a mobile DJ and grew into a Club/ Festival DJ. Taking years of experience and knowledge producing, promoting, facilitating and playing MAJOR events and being able to reverse engineer the process and offer it to folks is very exciting. I want to break the mold on what people expect from a private DJ
performance. So, I’m rebooting my old mobile entertainment company and giving it a makeover to include the “Maximus 3000” experience. We are aware that you were the main DJ that helped grow and build the Living Room nightclub in Fort Lauderdale a while back. Whatever happened to that? ‘The Living Room Era,’ as I like to call it, was one of the most epic residencies I had. It was a career changer. I met thousands of really cool people and built a family relationship with many of my co-workers, especially Mark Lowe, its creator. I launched a lot of new ideas, and perfected an open format skillset that has opened countless doors for me. I can attribute a lot of my chops to having maintained an almost 4 year weekly residency every Friday, and for a time even the Saturday night slot. It was a large part of my career to date, and I’m happy to have left it crystalized in its prime, but the proverbial door to a LIVING ROOM leads its way to a HOUSE, and that’s all I can say about that...Wink wink. Where do you see yourself in the next three years? I have a very concise battle plan, a lot of seeds that have been planted over the years are in full bloom and I’m seeing a completed picture of my vision. I have many areas of art yet to explore. I’m currently looking into an acting debut, music supervision on some film projects, as well as a national DJ tour, a network of online radio stations, a newly reinvigorated record label and publishing company, and expanded offices in Tampa, NYC and LA. reen beans are fantastic in a salad, healthy and delicious, mix’em with the right ingredients and you’ll be hooked on them forever. Shallots will give that lovely pink color and of course that unforgettable sweet flavor. • 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil • 1 large shallot, minced • 1 pound green beans, trimmed • 1/2 cup water • 2 slices bacon, cooked and chopped • 2 tablespoons chopped toasted hazelnuts, almonds or walnuts
Heat the oil in a frying pan over a medium-high heat. Add the shallot and cook, stirring, until it starts to brown, 30 seconds to 1 minute. Add the green beans and cook, stirring often, until seared in spots, 2 to 3 minutes. Add a little water; cover, and reduce the heat to medium and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 3 minutes for a tender-crisp result or 6 minutes for quite tender. Remove from heat and stir in the bacon, and whatever nuts you are using and salt. To toast nuts or seeds on the stovetop: Toast in a small dry skillet over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until fragrant and lightly browned, 3 to 5 minutes. Or under the broiler…watch them like a hawk.. otherwise they’ll burn.
