You were the class clown? I was. I won class clown in seventh grade. Although I was very unpopular. The year I won class clown I was in shock. It was my first major award and it was really incredible.

Was that because of the response you got? Yes, the reaction. But the whole process of actually taking this thing and honing it into…people are funny at parties, but to sit down and write material and have to be funny on the spot. It was an amazing process, but it was also the reaction. There’s nothing like it! I’m glad you mentioned writing because as someone who writes and performs – do you

have a preference for one over the other? For instance, do you prefer writing material for others? No! I want to perform. Me me me me me me me me me me me me me me. It’s good that you mentioned that as well because comedians such as Julia Sweeney and you have performed one-person shows in which the line between stand-up and monologue is blurred. Do you have a personal preference for standup versus one-person show? My one-person shows are more like plays. I wrote them with a playwright and they’re structured as a play. It’s not just me doing a monologue or anything like that. I’ve loved both of the one-person shows that I’ve done and I’ve loved that process. It takes years and years; as does a great standup act, of course. They are so different, but I must say I do prefer performing in a theater. You get to a certain age where people getting their checks, or hearing a blender go off and having hecklers, it gets old and tired after a while.

Speaking of different worlds, at the time we are speaking, you are a competitor on the current season of Rachael Vs. Guy, and you previously competed on Chopped. What do you like about food competition shows? I love to cook. It’s sort of like improvisation. On those shows you’re thinking on your feet. It’s like standup, there’s a lot of pressure; you only have a certain amount of time. It’s sort of solitary. I love to cook and I love to eat and I thought, “You know what? I can do this!” On Rachael Vs. Guy you were raising money for ALS. Is our mutual friend, gay comedian and writer Bob Smith, the motivating factor behind choosing that charity? Yes it is. Bob’s been one of my

door with an assignment. When you complete the assignment you get your present from your Secret Santa. You don’t find out who your secret Santa is until the party. I got a note one morning from my Secret Santa saying that I have to do 10 minutes of standup comedy and use everyone who lives on the floor as material. I took it really seriously. I took time off from class. I performed that night. It was like God had spoken to me. I performed in a lounge. Every night someone had to do something ridiculous for Secret Santa. Mine was this comedy show and I did it. It was like nothing I had ever done in my life.

You get a different kind of audience in a theater. I’ve always said that in comedy clubs you have to get their attention and keep it. In the theater you already have their attention. They are so vastly different. But they paid a lot of money in the theater, they’re not drinking, there comfortably seated -- if you’re not my height, you’re comfortably seated. It’s a theater, it’s a stage. There’s something about a stage. But then again, I love doing standup. I love going to the clubs and being able to say whatever I want and trying out new material and being organic and being able to roll with an audience. But it can be a struggle. It’s not as controlled as a theater. In a comedy club, you don’t know who went on before you, a lot of the time, and what they were talking about, or how hard it was for people to get to the club. It’s a whole different atmosphere.

Tallahassee, FL – The body of missing Florida State University graduate Ryan Uhre was found in an abandoned building on Tuesday according to Tallahassee Police. The body, which was discovered over two weeks after he disappeared, was found at 8:30 a.m. At a building near College Avenue and Adams Street, according to Tallahassee Police spokesman Dave Northway. “Our hearts and our thoughts are with the family today, it is a somber time at TPD,” Norway told NBC. Though the medical examiner is still determining the cause of death, Northway said that there was no suspicion of foul play. Family members held a prayer vigil on Sunday (the two-week anniversary of his disappearance), and had been asking anyone with leads to contact them through a Facebook page friends created,

called “Find Ryan Uhre.” Uhre, originally from Weston, disappeared two weeks ago after leaving Andrews Restaurant in downtown Tallahassee on Feb. 2, police said. Uhre graduated from FSU in December, having spent his high school years at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale.

Pride Fort Lauderdale Adds Transgender Performer to Roster Wilton Manors, FL – Pride Fort Lauderdale has just announced another addition to their performance roster – Alyssa, a transgender singer from Clearwater, FL. “Music is a way to express your most inner feelings and for me, the ability to express through vocal capability, is what drives everything I do,” says the budding pop singer on her official website. The trans pop singer writes all of her own lyrics, finding inspiration in everyday life. After encountering health issues, Alyssa writes songs with an intensity from the heart. Her debut album, “Alter Ego,” was released on iTunes on Jan. 16, and she plans to tour other Pride events following Fort Lauderdale Pride. “So excited to announce Pride Fest Tour 2014,” she wrote on her Facebook. “We are kicking off the tour in Fort Lauderdale, FL on March 2 2014. Even more excited to be on the same stage as Lisa Lisa & Sheena Easton.”

St. Petersburg, FL – Bishop Robert Lynch, a Roman Catholic bishop from St. Petersburg, says that the people of his church “felt that the Church needed to be prepared to better respond to the reality of same-sex marriage,” according to a recent blog post from the bishop himself. Last year, Pope Francis (and the Vatican) asked bishops to consult the laity on how well their church cares for families that are helmed by same-sex couples. Now, Lynch is reporting on his findings in a survey he conducted. Lynch wrote that the respondents of the survey – 6,800 people mostly age 50 and up – said that the Church needed to be kinder, gentler and to be less judgmental and more welcoming in general. Respondents also stated that it was “the opinion that an adopted child of same-sex parents should be treated in the Church exactly the same as a child born of a traditional marriage between a man and a woman.” Lynch also said that he

ashington, D.C. – Last week Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni told various lawmakers that he was going to sign the country’s antihomosexuality bill into law, which would include life imprisonment for some cases. Now, President Obama has released a statement, saying that signing the bill would be a major setback for a world that shares “a commitment to freedom, justice and equal rights,” reports Pink News. “This is why I am so deeply disappointed that Uganda will shortly enact legislation that would criminalize homosexuality,” said President Obama in a written statement issued on Sunday. “The AntiHomosexuality Bill in Uganda, once law, will be more than an affront and a danger to the gay community in Uganda.” The president also said that “enacting this legislation will complicate our valued relationship with Uganda.” Though President Museveni previously said that he would only sign the bill into law if it was proven that homosexuality was a learned behavior as opposed to a genetic trait, he is now claiming that a recent report surfaced that claims “that homosexuality is not a genetic but a social behavior.”

Austin, TX – Last week, Texas’s 13th District Court of Appeals announced the ruling in favor of Nikki Araguz, a transgender woman and widow of Thomas Araguz. Nikki has been involved in a legal battle over her deceased husband’s estate with Simona Longorio and Heather Delgado – Thomas’s mother and ex-wife.

When Thomas died while fighting a fire in 2010, Nikki was given control of the estate. But shortly after his death, Delgado and Longoria filed a lawsuit against Nikki, stating that she wasn’t legally married to Thomas, as the state’s law prohibits same-sex marriage. Delgado and Longoria also accused Nikki of hiding her trans history from Thomas. Nikki has

Montgomery, AL – A gay widower has filed a lawsuit in hopes of overturning Alabama’s ban on same-sex marriage that has been in place since 1998, according to a recent press release from Montgomery’s Southern Poverty Law Center. Marriage Equality Suit Filed in Alabama

Richmond, VA – In other wedding news, a federal judge has ruled that the ban on same-sex marriage in Virginia is unconstitutional. In a 41-page document, Judge Arenda Wright Allen announced the ruling, saying that the state’s ban on same-sex marriage could be linked to racial segregation – a popular and powerful degense. “Tradition is revered in the Commonwealth, and often rightly so,” Allen wrote in the statement. “However, tradition alone cannot justify denying same-sex couples the right to marry any more than it could justify Virginia’s ban on interracial marriage.” Though the ruling hasn’t made the state the eighteenth to allow samesex weddings just yet – Allen ordered that her decision be stayed, pending an appeal – it’s still a groundbreaking ruling for the South. The American Foundation For Equal Rights called the decision “historic,” and noted that it “continues the national momentum toward marriage equality.” Founder of Freedom to Marry, Evan Wolfson, was also floored by the ruling. “There has been a fundamental shift in the legal landscape,” Wolfson said. “America is ready for the freedom to marry and those couples in Virginia, on the eve of Valentine’s Day, are ready to marry.”

hen Facebook announced they were adding dozens of new gender options, I was floored. Not because it happened, but because of how long it took for them to actually implement the options. Sure, Zuckerberg issued a confusing statement on gender inclusion – in which he said that due to feedback from translators and users in other countries, essentially stating that translations could end up being “too confusing” – but why wouldn’t they issue a trans option? Eventually, Facebook caught up with the 21st century and added gender neutral pronouns. They now offer dozens of gender options, including “Transsexual,” “Pangender,” “Bi-gender,” “Trans Woman,” “Trans Man,” “Intersex,” and more. Unfortunately for us, Fox News felt the need to cover the story. “It includes ‘transgender,’ ‘intersex,’ and ‘neither.’ [Laughs] Okay...” one reporter is heard narrating in a Fox News brief. You can practically hear the disgust in Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s voice as she rattles off the same quote, ending with “Heading

over to the male, Clayton.” Clayton Morris responds with a wry “No, I changed mine to intersex. Thanks, Elisabeth.” Apparently these reporters missed the memo on sensitivity training, because Tucker Carlson circled back on “intersex,” following up with “whatever that means.” Yes, Carlson said on air “whatever that means.” Between Ellen Page coming out as a lesbian and discovering the term “intersex” for the first time, these journalists – using the term loosely of course – had a field day with the LGBT community this weekend. Todd Starnes, host of Fox News & Commentary, was also seemingly shaken by this news flash. “In the beginning God made man and woman,” Starnes wrote on his Facebook, “but Facebook decided to improve on the original models.” Starnes added, “What if you identify as a pine cone or a chicken or a weed whacker? Facebook doesn’t offer those options.” In other news, inanimate objects are apparently interchangeable with gender identities. We reached out to Equality Florida to see if they would be offering pine cone inclusion workshops in the future, but as of print, we have not heard back.

Chris Asceto, author of Championship Bodybuilding states that rebuilding muscle broken down by training requires energy – in other words, calories. But many people, including some nutritionists, overestimate the energy needs for gaining mass, encouraging extremely high caloric intakes. In general, to gain muscle and stay lean, aim for 250 – 320 more calories everyday than your body burns through exercise and normal functioning. Focus upon consuming 1-2 grams of protein per

Long hours of pumping iron will begin an awesome series of changes that will stimulate your muscles to grow denser and stronger in response to the challenges you impose on them. Eating for muscle is just as important as the time you spend in the gym. The breakfast that you eat or skip in the morning has an impact upon the amount of energy you have for your workout. When these carbs are combined with protein, you’ve got a strong muscle-building combination because carbs help the body to assimilate protein.

RULE #3: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially in the hours leading up to your workout. This helps you feel full and reduces hunger pangs. During training, drink at least 8 ounces every 15-20. RULE #4: Mass gains vary by individual. Gains will differ from one individual to another depending upon body size, build and level of experience in the gym. Don’t just rely upon the scale. Measure your hips and waist twice a month. Increases here will indicate that you may be putting on excess fat.

Makes Last Minute Move to the National Hotel Miami Beach BY RICK KARLIN

often hear people complaining that travel just isn’t much fun anymore. Even if you weren’t around during the heyday of airline travel in the ’60 and ‘70s, you’re still aware that flying has gone from being a luxurious experience to just a step or two above riding on a bus full of chickens in some third world country. And, while I’ll concede that travel isn’t as glamorous as it once was, I often observe people making it harder on themselves (and consequently, their fellow passengers). The following are the top ten mistakes I often see people make, as well as tips on how to avoid them.

NOT ALLOWING ENOUGH TIME. I used to hate getting to the airport early and having to hang around the airport. I would usually saunter up to the counter just before the final call for boarding. I learned my lesson when I arrived 25 minutes before take-off and was told that my seat was given away. There were no other flights out that night and I had to spend eight hours waiting for the next one. Now with long lines at TSA and consistently over-booked flights, it’s even more important to leave yourself enough time. Come to the airport prepared with things to do, and use this as uninterrupted time to enjoy a favorite book or on-line game, or as a time to get some work done.

OVER-PACKING.

RELYING TOO HEAVILY ON HOTEL WEBSITES WHEN PICKING VACATION DESTINATIONS. The right camera angles and lighting can make hotel rooms look better and larger than they really are and stunning views from the balconies can be added. Check web-sites such as Trip Advisor for unbiased reviews, but be forewarned, some places spend more money on paying people to post positive comments than they do upgrading their facilities. Ask for suggestions on Facebook, talk to a travel planner or call the local tourism bureau.

RELYING TOO MUCH ON RECOMMENDATIONS FROM FRIENDS AND FAMILY.

PACKING EVERYTHING IN CHECKED BAGGAGE. If you pack essential items, such as medications, toiletries, etc. in checked luggage, and it doesn’t make the flight or goes missing, the results could range from annoying to dangerous. Always pack medication, basic toiletries and a change of clothes in your carry-on.

TRAVELING WITH THE WRONG PEOPLE. Just because you are friends, doesn’t mean you are good travel buddies. Make certain that your priorities are similar. You may prefer to explore the city on foot, while your friend wants a bus tour. When you travel with someone you spend a lot of uninterrupted time together in unfamiliar and sometimes stressful situations. Before taking a long vacation together, start with a weekend trip to see how you get along.

BEING TOO LOYAL TO AN AIRLINE. Some folks travel the same airline to accumulate mile for the reward program and sometimes forget to check if airfares are lower with other companies. Some

airlines offer amenities (checked luggage, meals) for free that can more than make up for a difference in ticket prices. Also, don’t assume an airline with a reputation for luxury is beyond your means, often you can get deals that even out the playing field.

FORGETTING TO PACK CHARGERS AND ADAPTERS. This is definitely the most common thing people forget to pack, and it can be one of the most impossible to replace or find when away. If you can’t charge your camera or other necessary device, this can simply add to vacation stress. Consider buying extra chargers for the things you use most and leave them in your luggage.

CHECKING IN TOO OFTEN. Roaming and international charges can be expensive, as can Internet access. If possible, tell your co-workers that you will have limited or no phone or Internet access. None of us are as indispensible as we think we are. If you’re going to be checking in throughout the day, why even leave? Remember though, that if you’ve said you won’t have access to social media, don’t check in on Facebook. Provide the contact information for where you will be staying to loved ones and business associates with instruction that you should only be contacted in cases of emergencies.

Sort of The flip side of the tip above. Do they have the same expectations about a vacation experience you do? Are their values the same as yours? They may think a restaurant is great because the portions

are large, whereas you are more interested in the quality of the food. Are you open to experiences they would pass on? This is your vacation, not theirs. Supplement recommendations with your own research.

People seldom complain about under packing. Over-packing means you need to sort through things you don’t need to find the one thing you do, not to mention having to haul that stuff around. Also, you will have less room in your bags to bring back things purchased on your trip. Take a page from Coco Chanel who advised that when you are finished dressing, look in the mirror and remove one thing. When you are packing, place everything on a table and try to reduce the amount by one-third. You’d be surprised what you can do without.

Failing to alert your credit card companies that you are traveling. Credit card companies often suspend a card if they see unusual action on it (such as purchases made away from your home town). As much as you appreciate the vigilance against fraud, it can be difficult and time consuming to straighten out the problem.

auliflower is the edible flower of Brassica Olearacea Botrytis, a variety of cabbage, with an edible head of condensed flowers and flower stems. It’s normally creamy-white in color, although some cultivars have green or purple flowers. Broccoli is the horticultural variety ,and both were cultivated in Roman times. Varieties that mature in summer and autumn are called cauliflower, and those that mature in winter broccoli, but commonly both are called cauliflower. A 90g portion is a rich source of vitamin C; a good source of folate; a source of vitamin B6; provides 1.8 g of dietary fiber and supplies 8 kcal. This is an easy delicious way to eat cauliflower.

• 2 tablespoons minced garlic • 3 tablespoons olive oil • 1 large head cauliflower, separated into florets • 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese • Salt and black pepper to taste

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Grease a large casserole dish. Place the olive oil and garlic in a large ziplock bag. Add the cauliflower, and shake to mix. Pour into the prepared casserole dish, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Bake for 25 minutes, stirring halfway through. Top with Parmesan cheese and parsley, and broil for 3 to 5 minutes, until golden brown. You are a chef.
