FLORIDA ACLU ASKS JUDGE TO RECOGNIZE OUT-OF-STATE GAY MARRIAGES
/floridaagenda
COVER STORY

“We are proud to represent Arlene as we are to represent all the plaintiffs, to make sure no other Floridian faces discriminatory treatment while planning a life with, taking care of, or grieving for a loved one,” “That is why we have asked the court to move quickly in finding that these laws – which single out loving couples and deny them the security and protections of marriage, just because they’re gay – are harmful and against the values written into our constitution.” The plaintiffs are all represented by attorneys for the ACLU and the ACLU of Florida, as well as Stephen Rosenthal of the Podhurst Orseck law firm.

allahassee, FL – The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida has filed a motion to ask that a federal judge lifts the current ban on recognition of same-sex marriages performed out-of-state. The motion, filed late Friday, states that Florida’s ban on recognizing same-sex marriages affect all of the plaintiffs involved in the case, citing that the state currently is failing to provide their families with state and federal protections. “...Florida’s marriage recognition bans harm all of the plaintiffs represented in the case by stigmatizing them and their children and by denying them access to state and federal protections,” the ACLU news release said. The motion states that, because the harms to the plaintiffs are “ongoing and irreparable,” and it would be in the court’s best interest to remove the ban, as they state there is no harm to the state defendants in ending the bans’ enforcement. The ACLU amended its March complaint (a suit filed against Florida to allow same-sex marriage) on April 10, by adding Arlene Goldberg, of Fort Myers. Goldberg’s wife, Carol Goldwasser, died on March 13. “My heart broke as Carol faded away, but I knew it was her time to go,” Arlene told the ACLU. “I was preparing for the hurt of losing the person I’ve loved for so long, but what makes it even worse is what’s come since, because the law treats us like we never knew each other.” “Carol and I loved each other for nearly half a century; we were married,” she added. “That’s supposed to mean something, but Florida says I’m just a stranger to Carol.” The two had been partners for 47 years, and moved from the Bronx to Florida in 1989, marrying in New York in October 2011.

Mario Careaga Case Update Fort Lauderdale, FL – After a juror’s alleged antigay comments about Mario Careaga were proven to be false, Careaga’s charges of DUI manslaughter were cemented. Mario Careaga was found guilty of the DUI manslaughter charges against him last month and while Broward Circuit Judge Ilona Holmes released Careaga into his own custody, it was only a temporary reprieve after charges of jury tampering were alleged by an alternate juror at the end of the trial. Those charges were ultimately found to be untrue and Careaga was taken into custody awaiting appeal of his conviction. Currently there is a sentencing hearing set for May 5 at 9:30 a.m.in Room 4750 of the downtown Circuit Court. Careaga is expected to receive a sentence of between four and 20 years. Before the accident, Careaga was the Managing Partner of the Dennis Dean Galleries. Careaga’s public defender, David Bogenschutz, is rumored to be planning to appeal the verdict, although any indication that an appeal has been filed could not be confirmed.

After five years on the Board of Pride South Florida, Marc Hansen has resigned. Citing personal and family health issues, Hansen announced his resignation on Monday, April 28. The Florida Agenda received the following statement from Hansen himself just before print. “After over five years on the Board of Pride South Florida and many years as a volunteer, I have resigned. This decision was not made easily, but is due to my own personal health issues and also because my mother had a massive stroke on March 1, 2014, the day of Pride Fort Lauderdale, and I have been traveling back and forth to my parents’ home in Maryland, in between my own medical procedures. The council voted 6-0 at a meeting on Thursday night, according to the local TV station WBTW of Myrtle Beach. According to the report, the council has high praise for Moore and her work.

Jackson, MS – The Human Rights Campaign is the country’s largest LGBT rights organization, and now, they’re launching an $8.5 million effort to establish a stronger presence in states that don’t provide protections for the LGBT community. The initiative, known as Project One America, will establish offices in the states of Mississippi, Alabama, and Arkansas.
The reason for the focus in the South is to address its lack of marriage equality as well as basic protections in housing and employment areas. “Right now, this country is deeply divided into two Americas, one where LGBT equality is nearly a reality and the other where LGBT people lack the most fundamental measures of equal citizenship,” HRC president Chad Griffin said in a statement to USA Today. “Project One America is an unparalleled effort to close that gap, and it opens up a bold, new chapter in the civil-rights movement of this generation. In this grand struggle for equality, we can’t write off anyone, anywhere.”

Washington, D.C. – On Wednesday, Chelsea Manning issued a statement through her official website, announcing that her name change requested last month has finally been approved by a Kansas court. “Today is an exciting day,” Manning’s statement reads. “A judge in the state of Kansas has officially ordered my name to be changed from ‘Bradley Edward Manning’ to ‘Chelsea Elizabeth Manning.’ I’ve been working for months for this change, and waiting for years. Manning, currently serving a 35-year sentence on charges related to her leak of classified documents to the public (via WikiLeaks), announced in August of last year that she would be transitioning to a woman. “It’s worth noting that in both mail and in-person, I’ve often been asked, ‘Why are you changing your name?’” the whistleblower continues in her statement. “The answer couldn’t be simpler: because it’s a far better, richer, and more honest reflection of who I am and always have been – a woman named Chelsea.” Manning also said that she has been waiting for trans-friendly healthcare since August, but has not heard of any arrangements yet. “...I have not yet seen their treatment plan, and in over eight months, I have not received any response as to whether the plan will be approved or disapproved, or whether it follows the guidelines of qualified health professionals,” Chelsea writes.
Chelsea in her former state as Bradley Manning
The vote taken also gives people the chance to vote on another matter, which would give the Town Council more power, and less to the mayor, potentially getting Moore her job back. Moore, who was with the police department for 23 years (chief for two), was fired by Mayor Earl Bullard last week after he issued seven reprimands – all of which were the first Moore has ever received. Bullard says that the decision had nothing to do with Moore’s sexuality, but has allegedly made several antigay comments in the past to a Town Council member. In an interview with Myrtle Beach’s WMBF, Moore said that she had nothing but good things to say about the mayor before receiving the written reprimands. She also states that most importantly, she is hurt by his actions. “That’s crushing,” she said. “My lifestyle has nothing to do with my job. It’s not a lifestyle to me. I’m in a loving, committed relationship, and that’s what it is, it’s my personal life – it should have never been brought to work.” The referendum is currently set for June 24.

Our Own Not-So-Sterling Record
A
fter the most recent U.S. Supreme Court decision upholding Michigan State’s ban on affirmative action in college admissions — a decision largely based on the concept that racism is no longer a factor in our educational system, and, by implication, also not a motive among the electorate that votes such bans into law — the American media has been debating this issue. Is racism in America no longer a factor important enough to require laws to protect minorities and assure equal opportunity? The scandals involving Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling and Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy couldn’t have been more timely. Both cases are prime examples of how racism is very much alive in the United States. Both men, who had gained prominence in the news prior to

this week, suddenly became infamous for blurting out racist remarks. While uttering a racially offensive remark is not proof of the prejudice or racial bias (anyone is capable of making such a gaff in a moment of anger, as exemplified by some of the reaction to Mr. Sterling I’ve heard from African Americans), it does arouse suspicion as to where the speaker’s heart might be. Repeating these remarks can only confirm this suspicion. As a White man, I have known many cases where another White individual would use the “N” word in my presence, assuming that I would not object to it. Of these cases, the majority of them have been with gay individuals. Some have been with people I have worked with. I have been thinking about this issue for a while now — the concept that a gay man or woman would be a racist,
while taking part and benefiting from what has been called “The Last Great Civil Rights Movement” — equal rights for LGBT Americans. Of course, in the gay “world,” prejudice and offense are highly subjective. I can cite one man who, through the three years I worked for him, tolerated a much younger stud calling him a “Cheap Jew Bastard.” In front of the entire staff. That would have been offensive to me. The younger stud who called him that kept his job. One can only assume that the boss was getting something from him. Another employee, who did not have sexual relations with the boss, quoted the young stud’s remarks to a friend outside of the company. This got back to the boss. In firing him, the boss reportedly said, “In view of the fact that I’m paying you $20 an hour, I am going to have to let you go for the offensive remark,” suggesting that the offense was conditional on a particular amount of money. If that is the case, then the word “cheap” would indeed have been an accurate description. Here, we come to a difficulty in the language. Must we be polite in describing everyone at all times? If I said that Hitler was “Despicable Austrian Murderer,” would that be offensive to all Austrians, or just an accurate description of the man? Is a White (substitute “Black,” “Jewish,” “gay,” or whatever) man ever bad and deserving of contemptuous name-calling? And what type of language would be appropriate to descibe such a person? This may be the time to talk about these things — while the rest of the country is addressing the issue. Of course racism exists among gays. We just don’t talk about it — or, at least not since James Baldwin died in 1987. We may want to get this out of the way before asking… demanding… that the country pass ENDA. What about our own record of discrimination? Imagine my surprise, and delight, when a supposedly “fluff” and very sexy cable show, “Looking,” took on this very subject with an extremely intelligent script. Perhaps I’m not the only one thinking about this.

CONGRATULATIONS, TEAM VILLAGE PUB! Dancing with the South Florida Stars Winners Tell All BY GRANT JAMES PHOTOS BY TONY FOWLER AND YURI RODRIQUEZ
B
efore the Dancing with the South Florida Stars competition really kicked off, I asked team Village Pub’s Jerry Solano what his thoughts were going into this competition. “We just want to have fun really,” he told me. When I asked why his goal wasn’t to win (or to not mess up at least) he told me that him and his partner, Ashley Blake, were just going into it with an open mind, with the goal of having fun. He was being extremely genuine and honest. This wasn’t a facade. This was their actual mindset going into the competition. Fast forward to a few weeks later, and I’m standing with this year’s winning team: It’s team Village Pub, of course. The duo’s Salsa dance received great scores from the judges and the crowd ate it up. The cheers took a good chunk of time to die down each time Jerry and Ashley came out. I assumed early on in the night that they were
going to take home the trophy for Village Pub (after they were introduced to a room of loud cheers), but I didn’t picture it to be so grandiose. When it came time for the audience applause segment of the evening, it was a done deal. A sweeping win. It’s worth noting that the two of them are entertaining, witty and extremely passionate. Whether it’s Ashley’s gigs at Rumors, Palace, Off The Hookah, Azucar, or Village Pub, or her firecracker personality, Mrs. Blake is lively, engaging, and just easy to talk to really. She even flies to New Jersey at the end of each month to meet with clients as a stylist, which Blake says used to be a full-time job alone for her. Yes, Mrs. Blake. She married her partner of three and a half years, Diego Costa, roughly six months ago, in New York City. (They are eagerly waiting for the day same-sex marriage becomes legal in Florida.) The two have been happily living in Wilton Manors for the past year and four months. Jerry, originally from Costa Rica, has been a South Florida resident since 1991. He’s a well-known bartender, as he’s practically always behind the bar at Village Pub (which he’s been at since its opening almost 2 years ago).
In his space time, he enjoys...Salsa dancing! He absolutely loves it. “Ashley didn’t know how to do the Salsa, so I had to help a little,” Jerry confessed. “But she’s actually a very fast learner. She really delivered.” Jerry and Ashley said that they were “so very thankful for their win for Village Pub,” but they were also quick to extend an enormous “thank you” to Danny Carter, a dance instructor from Dance Moves, for giving the team a crash course one-time lesson on the Salsa. They also thanked the Brian Neal Fitness and Health Foundation for everything that they do for the community. “Above all else, it was for a good cause,” Ashley said. The foundation is a non-profit that aims to aid those with life-threatening illnesses, including HIV/AIDS, by helping them stay fit via free gym memberships and healthy lifestyle workshops. “We had to do it for Brian Neal’s foundation,” Solano added. “There was no question. It’s so important to the community.” Though they may be humble, the two are already looking forward to next year’s festivities, and to be honest, we can’t really blame them.

Bella Beware Quirky, intelligent, and musically inclined—sounds like the perfect date. Thankfully, one member of hipster, college-radio friendly Vampire Weekend is actually openly gay. Rostam Batmanglij (keyboardist and producer) publicly declared his homosexuality a few years after the group hit it big. Formed at Columbia University in the early 2000s, Vampire Weekend gained critical acclaim with their self-titled hit and intellectually stimulating single Oxford Comma. In that song the members of the band bemoan the use of an Oxford comma (a comma used after a series of lists of three or more before the coordinating conjunction). According to them, the Oxford comma is pointless, stupid, and unnecessary. Still, certain esteemed, obnoxious, and narcissistic writers for local gay
publications insist on using it. 8 p.m. Fillmore Miami Beach. 1700 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, 33139.

Food and Wine! Many people stumble down Las Olas Blvd drunk and with full bellies. Tonight an event dedicated solely to such an activity takes place. The Las Olas Wine and Food Festival arrives with a revamped VIP Prive party, exciting new restaurants, and a variety of on-site events guaranteed to elevate the experience. Recognized as one of the most anticipated wine and culinary events of the year, the 19th Annual Las Olas Wine and Food Festival will have 45 tables of wine, spirits, and micro brews. A Bombay Sapphire Gin Lounge and Shellback Caribbean Rum hut will showcase
the offerings of two of the main sponsors. All of the proceeds will benefit the American Lung Association in Florida. 7:30 p.m. Las Olas Wine and Food Festival. 600 E Las Olas Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33301.
Carlos Santana Fusing Latin American sound and American rock, Carlos Santana received acclaim for his 1970s band Santana. The band’s sound featured his blues-based guitar lines set against Latin and African rhythms not generally heard in rock music. A newer generation might know him most famously from the ubiquitous and repetitive Grammy-award winning hit single Smooth (featuring Rob Thomas). This year he received a Kennedy Center Honor for his lifetime contribution to American culture through the performing arts. Tonight he plays all of the hits. 8 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 5747 Seminole Way, Hollywood, 33314.

hy is Provincetown such a draw for GLBT vacationers? It certainly isn’t the most luxurious or colorful vacation spot and it’s not the easiest to get to. The last part of that statement may explain the town’s long history as a getaway spot for our community. This out of the waypoint allowed people to be themselves far from the prying eyes of society. As far back as the middle of the last century, Provincetown provided a safe and welcoming spot for homosexuals (although then they were referred to by the more circumspect term, “bohemians”). Barely three miles from end to end, the former whaling village juts out like a fist into the Atlantic Ocean forming the cape in Cape Cod. Artists were first attracted by the unusual quality of the light caused by being

WHY PROVINCETOWN?
TRAVEL
surrounded by water. Tennessee Williams and his crowd were among those who adopted the place as their summer retreat. The people of the area, mostly immigrant fisherman had a “live and let live” policy towards the artsy folks and that acceptance and openness continues to this day.
36TH ANNUAL CARNIVAL WEEK AUG.16-22 The Carnival parade sashays the length of Commercial St., Provincetown’s main drag (you’ll forgive the pun) and attracts upwards of 80,000 viewers. Floats, dancers, performers and many in the audience, dress the part of the annual theme (this year it’s “Comic Book Capers.”) The parade is the main focus, but the next day’s drag queen brunch is also a must-see. LABOR DAY WEEKEND One last blast of summer before things quiet down. It brings folks from all over the globe. It’s also a great time to snap up some bargains at the stores as nearly everything is discounted drastically. 21ST ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF LIFE SEPT. 5 More than 50 Broadway and classical musicians perform throughout town.
The town is bursting with architecturally preserved homes that look like they did when they were built in the 1800’s. It has a working fishing fleet that heads out most mornings to pull in fresh fish, oysters and lobsters that show up on the tables of the top notch restaurants each night.
9TH ANNUAL PROVINCETOWN TENNESSEE WILLIAMS THEATER FESTIVAL SEPT. 25-28 Performances that examine and celebrate Tennessee Williams’ work, life and evolving historical importance, including the playwright’s own connection to Provincetown. 9TH ANNUAL KATE CLINTON WOMEN’S FLAG FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT SEPT. 19-21 Tournaments and events that build self-confidence and enhance leadership skills are combined with efforts to professionalize the sport of flag football for women.
MATES LEATHER WEEKEND OCT. 2-5 A kick-back, have a good time, meet some hot new friends weekend for those who want to hang out, socialize, relax or party with other like-minded people in leather, rubber and uniforms. WOMEN’S WEEK OCT. 13-19 A festival that celebrates women, with performers and comics in lesbian culture. FANTASIA FAIR OCT. 19-28 A week-long celebration of gender diversity and the longest-running annual conference in the transgender world.
For more information, check out provincetown.com or ptown.org.
This tiny dot at the very end of Cape Cod, Massachusetts packs an awful lot into a small space for gay vacationers. From May through October theme weeks fill the calendar. Among some of the special events are Bear Week, Women’s Week, Mates Leather Weekend and, of course, Carnival. Days are usually spent pool-side at one of the numerous small resorts that populate the town, or on the beach for those staying in one of the hundreds of B&Bs. Nights are spent taking in the various shows, dining at restaurants that range from four star (The Pointe, 82 Bradford St.) to casual seafood shops (The Lobster Pot, 321 Commercial St.), to dives (Burger Queen, 331 Commercial St.) and hitting the clubs from the Tea Dance at The Boatslip (161 Commercial St.), to a quiet drink The Shipwreck Lounge in the Brass Key Guesthouse (67 Bradford St.) to down and dirty action at The Vault (247 Commercial) to the historic Atlantic House aka A-House, 4-6 Masonic Pl.) As the oldest, continuous art colony in the United States, it boasts dozens of galleries and venues for performers as diverse as flamboyant drag queens Varla Jean Merman and The Kinsey Sicks, lesbian stand up comics Lea Delaria and Kate Clinton, sing-along piano bars and Broadway stars, such as Megan Hilty and Audra McDonald performing and discussing their careers. No matter what the evening’s entertainment might be, everyone seems to end up at Spiritus Pizza (190 Commercial St.) after the bars close. If you’re planning a Provincetown trip, you might want to consult the calendar of events below. For a complete list, go to http://ptown.org/yearly-events-calendar.

CRÊPES

rêpes originate from Brittany, a region in the northwest of France, their consumption is nowadays widespread in France and is considered one of the national dishes. Crêpes can be compared to the African injera, the tortilla, the Indian dosa and the Mexican sope. Here’s an easy recipe: you should make about 12 crêpes with these proportions (I usually make double that because Kathleen & Vero devour them)
• 1 cup all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon white sugar • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 3 eggs • 2 cups milk • 2 tablespoons butter,

melted
Sift together flour, sugar and salt; set aside. In a large bowl, beat eggs and milk together with an electric mixer. Beat in flour mixture until smooth; stir in melted butter. Heat a lightly oiled frying pan over medium high heat. Pour or scoop the batter (I use a small ladle) onto the pan, using approximately 2 tablespoons for each crepe. Tip and rotate pan to spread batter as thinly as possible. Brown on both sides and serve hot. You can fill your crêpes with savory or sweet fillings…. You are the chef.
Although born in Dublin, Ireland, Chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.

DON’T FORGET THE CARDIO! BY TOM BONANTI
/floridaagenda
W
hen it comes to having a great body most guys will do just about anything. Pumping iron seven days a week, buying expensive supplements, and even taking illegal drugs are not out of the question. But when it comes to cardiovascular (aerobic) training they’ll tack an extra 15 minutes on to the end of their work-out every now and then and they think that they’re doing the job. Let’s take another look at why you must do cardio. Not only will 20-60 minutes of cardio at least 2 times a week at 55-85% of your maximum heart rate (220 – your age) help you to get lean and stay lean, but it’s also damn good for you. Aerobic fitness, according to most doctors, is the most important component of physical fitness. When ®
your muscles need oxygen, your aerobic (cardio vascular) system must be able to efficiently deliver it to them. When your body has waste products that need to be expelled (eg. carbon dioxide and metabolic wastes); your heart-lung complex must be up to the task. Aerobic fitness is the most effective way to burn fat. Engaging in aerobic exercise can burn up to one thousand calories an hour depending on the specific type and intensity of activity. As a result, individuals who want to reduce their body fat sensibly, instead of starving the weight off, have a positive, user-friendly option at their disposal. Doing regular cardio helps you to live longer! Research indicates that for every hour you spend exercising aerobically, you extend your life by two hours. Mentally and emotionally ® aerobic
IN
exercise can do wonders for you. Researchers show that individuals suffering from light to moderate depression, who engage in aerobic exercise 15-30 minutes at least every other day, typically experience a dramatic improvement in their condition. Mental sharpness, improved sleep patterns as well as an improved self image have also been reported. From a medical-physiological point ® cardiovascular training can of view, provide the only real fountain of youth and good health to the human body. Aerobic exercise aids in preventing certain types of cancer. Studies show that men and women who exercise are less likely to get colon cancer. Cardiovascular training reduces
the risk of heart disease. The American Heart Association reports that non-exercisers have twice the risk of developing heat disease and heart attacks than individuals who, walk, jog, kick box, or hit the treadmill regularly. In addition, aerobic exercise is one of the few voluntary activities that is effective in lowering your LDL (bad cholesterol) and raising the level of HDL (“good cholesterol”). Pump up your cardio, train with weights regularly, and adhere to a sound nutritional plan and you just IN might live forever-or almost! Stick with this 3 fold plan and you are going to look leaner, hotter and more muscular, for sure!
