ew York, NY – When Michael Sam became the first openly gay player drafted to the NFL, teammates and the LGBT community were extremely supportive. Sam’s boyfriend, Vito Cammisan, a former University of Missouri swimmer, was elated, tweeting “Wow. What a day. On cloud 9. So proud and happy!” A follow-up tweet linked an image of Cammisan sharing a kiss with Sam. Many welcomed Sam’s seventh-round selection by the St. Lois Rams. His team is just two hours away from the University of Missouri, where Sam was a successful defensive player. “Welcome to the squad,” fellow Rams defensive end Robert Quinn tweeted to Mike Sam following the announcement. Even President Barack Obama weighed in on the matter. “The President congratulates Michael Sam, the Rams and the NFL for taking an important step forward today in our Nation’s journey,” the White House said in a statement. “From the playing field to the corporate boardroom, LGBT Americans prove everyday that you should be judged by what you do and not who you are.” But what was a moment of celebration quickly turned to an anti-gay scandal, with several current and former NFL players speaking (or tweeting) out against the kiss, which was aired on national television. “I’m sorry but that Michael Sam is no bueno for doing that on national tv,” former Super Bowl champion Derrick Ward tweeted. “Man U got little kids lookin at the draft. I can’t believe ESPN even allowed that to happen.”

Miami, FL – On May 14, a hearing will be held in Miami to discuss the lawsuit to overturn Florida’s ban on same-sex marriage. The Orlando Sentinel reports that Mat Staver, chairman of Liberty Counsel, has filed a petition on behalf of three anti-gay groups that seek to defend the state’s constitution. Staver’s groups want to join the suit as defendants to stand up against Amendment 2, which is represented by six South Florida gay couples. Gay rights attorney Mary Meeks will allegedly argue against the groups who are seeking to join the suit. Meeks also drafted the lawsuit, which was filed in January. Staver argues that since same-sex

Tampa, FL – A Hillsborough Circuit Court judge has refused to grant a divorce to two Tampa women that were married in a state that allows same-sex marriage. “There is no valid marriage to be dissolved under the laws of Florida,” Circuit Judge M. Lee wrote in a statement released last Friday. “The Court is without jurisdiction to dissolve that which does not exist.” Lawyers for the women say they are going to take the case to the Second District Court of Appeal. The attorneys

are hopeful that the two Tampa women, Mariama Changamire Shaw and Keiba Lynn Shaw, will eventually be able to divorce. “We’re pretty confident that the parties will be able to get a divorce through the Second District Court of Appeal or the Florida Supreme Court,” said Adam Cordover, an attorney for Keiba Lynn Shaw, reported by The Tampa Tribune. “I’m very hopeful. The trend in the various court systems is in favor of marriage equality.” The couple married in Massachusetts in 2010, before moving to Tampa in 2011. Both women have agreed to terms of a divorce and want a judge to enforce their divorce rather than have it slip through the cracks. “The state of Florida wants them to be perpetually married,” said Changamire Shaw’s attorney, as reported by the Tribune.

New York, NY – In a recent article from The Wallstreet Journal, gay fraternities were profiled with great detail. It began when Syracuse University junior Aaron Goldsmith couldn’t see himself at any of his school’s fraternities, so he decided to make one where gay members would be the majority, instead of the minority. “This is for people who might not fit in at other houses,” Goldsmith told the WSJ when speaking of the Delta Lambda Phi colony in Syracuse, set to open this fall. “It’s bridging a gap between activism and social life.” Gamme Rho Lambda, a sorority that targets lesbian women, has grown to 15 chapters or colonies since opening their first chapter in 2003, according to a spokeswoman who provided WSJ with the information. “It’s hard to meet people at NYU – let alone gay people – as a math major,” said Eric Limjoco (of New York University) to the WSJ. Though Delta Lambda Phi is still small in numbers, they told the WSJ that they try to live by their slogan: “making your presence known.”

In a new report on IFLScience.com, 15-year-old Nicole Ticea has supposedly developed an HIV test that allows a user to place a drop of blood on a microchip to receive a nearly instant result. This new test tests for the actual virus, as opposed to current testing technology, which looks for antibodies. The technology Ticea’s test uses is already in use for the diagnosis of several other

diseases as well. If approved, the Canadian student’s test could result in an earlier diagnosis and intervention with ARV treatment, which could in turn result in less new infections, as it diminishes the time between infection and detection. The test itself is still a long way from widespread use, according to the report. The test would need to pass a far more thorough evaluation before commercial partners can even consider using it. Ticea’s study goes to a national final next week, where two winners will be picked to go to the world final in San Diego in June.

Little Rock, AR – A large number of gay couples were issued marriage licenses in the Bible Belt state since a judge recently struck down Arkansas’ samesex marriage ban, according to the Associated Press. Now, Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel is asking the state’s court to suspend the ruling. Though McDaniel, a Democrat, has said that he supports same-sex marriage, he has vowed to continue defending the ban because he believes it is his job to do so. Though hundreds of couples lined up, it’s expected that dozens received licenses from Saturday until Monday, before the stay was put in place. These marriages, often called loophole marriages, are not always recognized by the state until a higher court makes a ruling.

hen Conchita Wurst took home the biggest award at Eurovision this year, she sort of took everyone by surprise. No one was really expecting a bearded drag queen, because, well, it’s not a very popular form of drag, but also because it was drag in general. Sure, it would be equally gratifying to discover Wurst’s born gender after the decision was made, but seeing her come out in a full beard packed a punch that no one was prepared for (aside from those familiar with Hialeah’s Finest, AKA Juliesy Y Karla). Of course, Wurst’s bold beard landed her in some hot water with Mother Russia. Following the announcement of her Eurovision win, Russian officials denounced Wurst, with one of the officials even asking the culture ministry (which basically keeps old traditions and cultural norms in place) to ban her from touring Russia, according to a report from Billboard. Wurst, real name Thomas Neuwirth, took home Eurovision’s top honors on Saturday with her ballad “Rise Like a Phoenix,” showcasing a strong James Bond vibe while representing Austria in the competition. Apparently her message of transformation and acceptance was not received well by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, who tweeted: “Eurovision showed European integrators their Euro-prospect – a bearded girl.” Vitaly Milonov, a conservative politician, was also critical of Wurst. But instead of responding or acknowledging the vicious comments in a recent interview with the Associated Press, Wurst said: “It’s strange that a little facial hair causes that much excitement. I have to add that 80 percent of autograph requests I get are from Russia and Eastern Europe – and that’s what is important to me.” Susan Boyle also “surprised” everybody when she appeared on the stage for Britain’s Got Talent. After there wasn’t a dry eye in the house, Boyle effectively shook things up for vocalists of the future. Now, we have shows like The Voice, where the judges can’t even

see the singer until after they vote. Simply put, Wurst gets it. She deflects the hateful comments with charm and wit, which always wins in the end. With a beautiful voice and a charming personality, it doesn’t matter what you look like. It’s safe to say the world hasn’t seen the last of Conchita Wurst, and we couldn’t be happier.

So you can imagine what kind of messages “All Cheerleaders Die” (RLJ), a movie about high school cheerleaders who become zombies because of a spell cast by a teen witch with lesbian tendencies might be sending. Head cheerleader Alexis (Felisha Cooper) puts the head back into head cheerleader via her interactions with football stud Terry (Tom Williamson). When she declares cheerleading to be the most dangerous high school sport, she’s not kidding. Lexi breaks her neck and dies in a cheerleading accident. Now Tracy (Brooke Butler) and Martha (Reannin Johannink), must find a replacement for the squad. It doesn’t take long for them to select Maddy (Caitlin Stasey), whose queer

rep – she was in a relationship with Wiccan classmate Leena (Sianoa Smit-McPhee) – is overlooked for her cheering skills. But Leena isn’t just going to stand by and let her gal pal become one of the mean girls. This is where the movie’s moral – the consequences that come with getting what you wish for -- comes into play. Following a particularly excessive night of partying in a cemetery, things get violent and there are suddenly four dead girls. But after a little magic, a full moon and some stone throwing, they rise from the dead to cheer, strike fear and generally turn their suburban town upside down. Co-written/co-directed by Lucky McKee (May) and Chris Sivertson, “All Cheerleaders Die” is identified as the first part of a series (that’s wishful thinking!) and the cemetery finale (with its Carrie homage) would indicate there’s more to come. Tickets are $25/$30. Also, for those who want to party late into the night, that same night the “Unzipped Black & Blue Ball” will be held at the hotel, running from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. costing $20/$25. During the weekend there will be a production of “Pillow Talk”, a play by Peter Tolan, held at the Doubletree. Tickets for this event are $15 - $25, with tickets for the Sunday evening performance only available by advance sale. On Saturday June 7 there will also be a night of stand-up comedy for the girls, with Mimi Gonzalez and Sandra Vall at the Doubletree, $40/$50 advance only. With all this going on, you don’t want to miss the Gay Days at the various area amusement parks. None of the “gay days”

are official park events and no special tickets are required, so you may want to take advantage of the various package deals. Don’t forget that Florida residents get discounts on most theme park tickets. Don’t forget to wear your red shirts as you visit Animal Kingdom on Thursday, June 5. The red attire continues Disney’s Hollywood Studios on Friday. Saturday’s event at Magic Kingdom (at Walt Disney World) is still the signature event of the week. An estimated 50,000 Gay Days attendees pack the park and the 3:00 parade down Main Street always draws an unforgettable “sea of red” that can be seen from one end of the park to the other. Epcot is the site of Sunday’s final Gay Day. Gay Days Orlando not only provides an opportunity to make memories that last a lifetime, it is a chance to make GLBT friends from around the globe, proving that “It’s a Small World” after all. While outsiders will need to pay for admission to the pool parties, they are free for the hotel’s registered guests. All of the parties feature top-name DJs spinning poolside. Day time parties at the main Lagoon pool are $35 advance/$60 at event (all prices that follow are listed are for the three day passes), evening parties are $65/$95. f you grew up going on family vacations at Disney World and the surrounding theme parks you no doubt have fond memories of those trips. Or if you’re like me, you mostly remember your parents bickering because your father wanted to drive as far as possible in one day, trying to cut the number of nights we’d have to stay in a motel. But once we got into the park, all the bickering ended as the entire family took in the majesty that is Disney World. Sure it’s a manufactured majesty, but majesty all the same. Whether your memories are good, bad or somewhere in the middle, you now have a chance to make new ones with Gay Days Orlando, June 3-9. Gay Days began in 1991 when the LGBT community was encouraged to visit Disney World on the first Saturday in June and wear red so as a show of Pride. Nearly 3,000 took part in that first event. Since its inception, the event has endured attacks by the right-wing American Family Association and other organizations. For many years, it was pretty much ignored by Orlando’s hotel/motel industry and the press (except for coverage of the protests). As the event grew, it became increasingly clear that some organization was needed. In 1998, GayDays.com launched, and a year later joined the Orlando/Orange County Convention and Visitors Bureau. Gay Days now attracts more than 150,000 GLBT celebrants and their allies who pump an estimated $100 million into the local economy. As the saying goes, “Money talks, BS walks”. Today, the parks offer expanded operating hours, and fireworks displays welcoming us and hotels compete to be the host of the event. This year, Doubletree Orlando at Seaworld is the official host hotel and the site of the week-end’s 25 pool parties. The hotel has just had a multi-million dollar makeover and boasts three pools. The Gay Days ticket center is located in the hotel, as is the Gay Days Expo. Passes for the pool parties at the host hotel are sold for three day, four day and five day attendance. Daily events passes are about $5-10, if bought in advance, double that if bought at the door.

ave you ever jumped full speed ahead into a workout program only to find that you get bored, burned out, or injured quickly? Maybe you’ve been exercising regularly for weeks, but you are disappointed with the minimal results. There’s a good chance in either situation that you are engaging in some bad habits that are preventing you from getting the most out of your exercise program. Here are a few common culprits to look for! You never warm up. An adequate warm up is essential to any workout, especially dynamic ones that get you moving in the right movement patterns. As a rule, warm up and stretch before aerobic workouts like running, swimming or biking. A moderate 10 minute warm up before lifting, followed by stretching between and after sets is a good program for weight training. You’re not eating properly. The amount of energy you put into your body will determine how well you train. If you want to build muscle you need to take in more protein (between o.8 and 1 gram of protein per pound of lean body mass is a start). To lose weight you do not need to starve yourself. Instead you must eat the right foods – more lean protein, low glycemic index carbs, no processed foods or trans-fats. You do the same thing, every time. Periodize your training. Go to the gym with a plan. Train opposing muscle groups (back and chest, shoulders and arms, legs and glutes) on different days. Do your cardiovascular training on days you don’t lift, and do something that is

fun and challenging like Zumba, kickboxing, etc. You train too long and too frequently. Believe it or not, this is a big “no-no”. Working out and doing cardio help to release good hormones (testosterone, dopamine and human growth hormone) into your bloodstream which triggers positive results. Training for hours 7 days a week can have negative effects and release negative hormones into your system like cortisol which can actually break down healthy muscle tissue. A good place to start is with weight training 3-4 times per week for half hour periods. Doing cardio 2-3 times per week for 45 minutes at 65-85% of your target heart range will produce optimal results. Make sure to take 1-2 days off per week and get plenty of quality sleep. You mimic other’s routines. What works for one person may not be effective for you. Horrible exhibits of improper, sloppy form abound in all commercial gyms. Jerking movements, dropping weights and lifting too heavily at the outset can cause all manner of injuries and even lengthy set backs. Hire a personal trainer to teach you the basics. Go on-line and watch professionals demonstrate and explain movements and exercises that you can use in your training sessions. • 4 to 6 beef ribs • 4 lbs pot roast • 2 tbs garlic olive oil • 2 tbs butter • Sliced onions • Salt and pepper to taste • 1 cup good wine • 1 cup water • 3 to 4 tbs Worcester Sauce • Garlic powder

ake 4 to 6 beef ribs and a 4 pound pot roast cut into equal sized pieces (easy to turn in skillet). . . sauté on a low flame until the meat is caramelized or browned deeply on all sides. This takes about an hour, don’t crowd your pan. Don’t get anxious... low heat in garlic olive oil and butter. About 2 tablespoons each. Near the end of this process, season sliced onions with salt & brown, in same pan and remove, set aside. When the meat is really wellbrowned, remove from skillet. Drain off fat from pan and return pan to heat. Add 1 cup of good wine to the pan and 1 cup of water and bring to a boil. Deglaze the bottom of the pan. Add 3 to 4 tablespoons of Worcester sauce. Season entire pan with garlic powder, onion powder, chili flakes, rosemary, thyme and salt and pepper. Return meat to pan... Cover and cook on a simmer for 2 hours. Serve any way you wish. I like a poppy or sesame seeded bun with mayonnaise. Shown above, grilled cheese with pot roast.

The American-style restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch, Tuesday through Sunday (closed Mondays) and is going to be your new favorite spot – trust us. Their motto, “Come as you are, be who you are and eat whatever you want” should be followed closely, as the foods can be a bit intimidating at first. For breakfast, the cafe offers everything from Schnitzel & Eggs ($10) to Chicken & Waffles ($10). Lunch – Grilled Chicken Paillard ($8) and Moroccan Spiced Wings ($9) – can also

be viewed as adventurous, unknown territory. But some of the best foods are those which you haven’t tried yet, so leave your conscience at the door and dig in. Fortunately the menu overlaps, so you can order breakfast or lunch from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. anytime that they’re open. I ordered the DTC Chicken & Waffle: buttermilk spiced fried chicken served on on top of a crispy waffle with spiced asian maple syrup and a kimchi slaw on top. My mouth was watering just scanning the text. We also ordered the Grilled Vegetarian Stack ($7) and the Jerk Chicken Philly ($9). The food came within ten minutes and we were extremely happy with the outcome. The Jerk Chicken Philly was a nice take on the classic Philly, with jerk spices and a mango salsa, and the Grilled Vegetarian Stack was fresh and tasty, though a little difficult to eat (like we said, check your food conscience at the door). The restaurant also offers a fivecourse-meal, paired with wine, available after signing up for their e-mail list. A word to the wise: These tastings apparently sell out fast, so if you’re interested, sign up quick following your meal. Don’t forget to tell them Florida Agenda sent you.
