NORFOLK – An estimated 15,000 people turned out to celebrate Hampton Roads Pride, the Commonwealth of Virginia’s PrideFest 2014 last Saturday. Organizers credited the string of legal victories regarding the state’s same-sex marriage laws for drawing the record crowd. Among those filling Town Point Park in Norfolk: Tim Bostic and Tony London, co-plaintiffs (with Carol Shall and Mary Townley of Richmond) in the landmark case that overturned Virginia’s same-sex marriage ban earlier this year. “We are very aware of all the hard work that so many people have done and the sacrifices so many people “It’s awesome. It was so rewarding,” said Laurel Quarberg, President of Hampton Roads Pride, now in its 26th year.. “I just kept thinking of that word ‘proud.’ I’m so proud of our community, our supporters, the people that support us. HRC Demands Name of House Source of On-Line Edits The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the largest civil rights organization for LGBT individuals, has challenged U.S. House Speaker John Boehner

(R-Ohio) to identify who in Congress made multiple and inaccurate changes to Wikipedia articles on transgender people. The anonymous edits were called “deeply troubling” by the organization. The offensive edits have led to a month-long ban on anonymous House edits last Wednesday—all originating from the same Internet Protocol (IP) on a government computer. “At a time when more and more Americans are recognizing and upholding the rights and dignity of transgender Americans, it is an unwelcome reminder of how much work remains to be done,” HRC Vice President Jeff Krehely said in a statement Thursday night. The temporary ban Wednesday was the third this year relating to the House IP address. Those House staffers who have individual accounts may still log on and edit posts. It is the cowardly anonymous nature of the inaccurate corrections that have garnered the HRC’s attention. Last Wednesday, someone from the House attempted to edit the Wikipedia page of the Netflix series “Orange is the New Black,” which features transgender actress Laverne Cox. The edit changed Cox’s description as “a real transgender woman” to “a real man pretending to be a woman.” “Laverne Cox not only plays an inspirational character, but has inspired so many of us as an advocate for transgender equality,” Krehely said. “She deserves much better than this.”

Pride,” Quarberg told local ABC TV station WVEC. Although the federal court in Richmond agreed with a lower court’s ruling that the ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional, earlier this week the United States Supreme Court granted a stay in the case which means, for now, gay marriages cannot take place in Virginia. Both opponents and supporters of gay marriage are hoping that this stay will force the high court to take up Virginia’s case. The U.S. Supreme Court will decide in the coming weeks and months if it will hear the case. The justices decision would set a nationwide precedent on the legality of same-sex marriage. “We stand on the shoulders of some phenomenal people that came in front of us, that laid down their time, their trouble, and in many instances their lives to promote this,” London said, “and we will be there, and no one, and I mean no one, will stop us from getting there.”

INDIANAPOLIS—Pam Lee is an office with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), and has been with her partner Candy for 25 years. Last Tuesday, they took their legal battle to become legally married to the 7th U.S. Circuit Court in Chicago. “Our personalities just mesh and even though we’re complete opposites in every way, shape, and form, we get along like that and we have fun,” Pam told WISH-TV They’re spending their Saturday night at home, but are preparing for a road trip to Chicago to ask a judge to recognize their marriage. “It’s nerve-wracking not knowing what the outcome is going to be, but really excited that we’ve finally got to this point,” Pam said. As a police officer, Pam is concerned about getting killed on the job, and wants her wife to be able to receive the same spousal benefits from IMPD that husbands and wives of traditional marriages would receive. “They get financially taken care of for the rest of their lives and that’s what she deserves. I pay into it just like anybody else does, so I think that we should get the same benefit and respect that anybody else does,” Pam said, according to WISH. “If I should get killed, I want her taken care of, just like my buddies on the police department, their wives would be taken care of,” Pam said. As their case moves swiftly up the ladder, they say they’re prepared for the U.S. Supreme Court to have the final say. “It’s just that last step before the final step and we’re looking forward to,” Pam said. “This is really another civil rights movement in our history and it’s really cool to be a part of that.” Arguments in Chicago are set for Tuesday and will last 80 minutes.
Although half of that time will be allotted to those leading the fight in Wisconsin. The Indiana and Wisconsin cases were combined earlier this month. After the arguments are presented the three judges over the case will deliberate, but a ruling on the case could take weeks or even months.

TALLAHASSEE — It’s an undefeated season for Florida’s gay and lesbian marriage rights advocates as a Federal judge once again ruled that the state’s ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. There will be no legal marriages for the LGBT community in Florida anytime soon however. U.S. District Judge Robert L. Hinkle ruled that the 2008 ban against same-sex marriage in the state violated the country’s 14th Amendment that guarantees equal protection for all citizens and due process of law. Hinkle issued a stay delaying his order, however, just as most of the other

Another Federal Victory for Florida Same-Sex Marriage
18 other federal courts have done. Likewise, gay couples legally married in other states will not have their marriages recognized in Florida at this time. Hinkle, an appointee of President Bill Clinton according to Associated Press, compared bans on gay marriage to the long-abandoned prohibitions on interracial marriage and predicted both would be viewed the same way in history. “When observers look back 50 years from now, the arguments supporting Florida’s ban on same-sex marriage, though just as sincerely held, will again seem an obvious pretext for discrimination,” Hinkle wrote in his ruling. “To paraphrase a civil rights leader from the age when interracial marriage was struck down, the arc of history is long, but it bends toward justice.” Like those other judges, Hinkle said the Florida ban — first put into law in 1977 and written into the state’s constitution after a 2008 referendum — violates the “due process” and “equal protection” provisions in the U.S. Constitution. The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida, which represented some of the gay couples, said the tide of rulings makes legal same-sex marriage in Florida appear inevitable. “We’re very pleased to see the ban held unconstitutional in such unequivocal terms so that all Florida families will soon finally have the same protections,” said ACLU staff attorney Daniel Tilley. Last Wednesday, the Supreme Court delayed an appeals court decision that would end Virginia’s gay marriage ban and, in January, the justices did the same thing in a same-sex marriage case in Utah. The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati recently heard arguments in six same-sex marriage cases from Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee, CNN reported. Nadine Smith, executive director of Equality Florida, said that “today is the 5th consecutive victory in Florida and leaves no doubt that this ban serves no purpose but to harm gay couples and their children.” She said that she applauded the judge decision, “and we call on Governor Scott to lead where Attorney General Pam Bondi has failed. Florida put this discriminatory ban in place and Florida should end it. Our families have waited too long already.”

of education experience both as a teacher in a private prep school and later as a text book publisher. “Bruce has been a supporter of Stonewall’s efforts for some time now,” said Executive Director David Jobin. “In addition to financial support, Bruce and his production company, Downtown Loft Studio, have donated thousands of dollars in professionally created information videos to help us get our message out.” Bruce Presley most recently extended his financial support and the resources of Downtown Loft Studio to produce this promotional video profiling the SNMA education program, Stonewall National Education Project. “I am committed to supporting causes that help educate society about issues that affect gay students, said Presley. “Stonewall is an amazing repository of this information and will have major impact as it reaches out to educators across the country.” Stonewall National Museum & Archives promotes understanding through preserving and sharing the proud culture of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their significant role in American society. The mission of Presley’s Downtown Loft Studio is two-fold. First, it works with young videographers and photographers to further their careers by offering them marketing, artistic assistance and financial support. Second, DTLS produces video documentaries, often in collaboration with non-profit organizations.

The Pastor and the Lawyer
B
So a funny thing happened on the way to the pulpit. Pastor Larry Thompson (of First Baptist Church Fort Lauderdale) got some shade from Earl Rynerson who exposed this week’s cover story from the graveyard of old Thompson sermons via a blog. Had he not, Thompson’s analogy comparing the struggle for same-sex marriage equality with Serbian ethnic cleansing would most likely not been uncovered. I certainly had not heard the comparison made before, and I read a lot. And while I wrote the story because it is newsworthy, it is not the whole story where Pastor Thompson is concerned. There is a very educated, erudite family man behind those ethnic cleansing comments. I know this because I know

Dean Trantalis, who calls Thompson a friend “of many years.” As you are surely aware, Trantalis is an openly gay Fort Lauderdale city commissioner and local attorney with navigates many rough seas wearing both of those hats. One such swell is Pastor Larry Thompson, who Trantalis spent some time with on the telephone yesterday speaking about the chaos created in the aftermath of the Rynerson mass mailing blog. “As a city commissioner, I think it is always important that we maintain an open communication with each other,” Trantalis told me. “Even if a bridge is not always an obvious one, it is important to try to cross it. If Pastor Thompson has issues with sexual orientation and equality, then who better to try to engage this
man than someone like myself who has been a gay activist for the past 25 years? “It is important that there are ideologues in our community who continue to ground us on who we are and where we need to be. At the same time, I don’t want their approach to strangle our ability to engage others in an open dialogue about what it is to be a gay person,” Trantalis says. “The reverend feels very hurt about these things that are being said about him,” Trantalis continues, “and I told him that he had said mean things about us.” Thompson’s excuse is that it’s the dogma of his church, but, Trantalis told Thompson, “the fact that you called to discuss this with me shows that you’re interested in knowing more about who I am.” And therein lies Thompson’s redeeming grace. The dialogue is on-going, the case is far from closed. Three weeks from now, Trantalis and the pastor are breaking bread together. “I’m going to explore this quietly then. I want to tell him that you cannot connect homosexuals with the most heinous crimes known to man. I know this man and I cannot believe that he honestly believes that.” Or apparently, not now that two years has passed and the constitutionality of denying same-sex couples the right to marriage is being questioned. “He has always said that he believes in equality, and that the way to achieve that equality is through a concept called civil unions. He feels that marriage itself should be the religious aspect, yet he knows that he cannot impose his own religious views on other religions,” Trantalis explains. Trantalis clarified to the pastor that gays are not trying to take away any religious freedom from the First Baptist Church. “But we are trying to maintain religious freedom among all religions.” And Thompson agreed 100 percent. “If I hadn’t maintained this friendship, I would never have heard those words,” Trantalis admitted. And now we’ve all heard them as a result.….Until next week…

COVER STORY BY RICHARD HACK
BAPTIST PASTOR COMPARES SAME-SEX MARRIAGE TO SERBIA’S ETHNIC CLEANSING
August 27, 2014
14
T
here was a party last Sunday, celebrating the 20th anniversary of Pastor Larry Thompson at Broward Boulevard’s First Baptist Church. Florida Governor Rick Scott was there—clearly the reigning dignitary, if you don’t count Thompson himself. At First Baptist, Thompson can do no wrong. While Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler was also there along with City Commissioners Dean Trantalis and Vice Mayor Romney Rogers, it was clearly Thompson’s hour to shine. Earl Rynerson, a former candidate for Fort Lauderdale mayor himself, was represented as well, his billboard truck proclaiming “Marriage Equality for All” circling the block in front and rear of the church lambasting Jack Seiler’s vote against same-sex marriage during a commissioners’ meeting last June. The billboard could have included Rogers’ picture as well, since he too joined Seiler in voting against a non-binding measure endorsing same-sex marriage that Trantalis had brought to the commission floor. While the measure passed with a 3-2 vote, Seiler and Rogers’ nay votes offended many in a town which makes tens of millions a year on the gay tourist dollar. Yet, no one at the event deserved to be on that mobile billboard more than Pastor Thompson himself. In the face of recent court victories in the state defeating Florida’s ban on same-sex marriage on constitutional grounds, it could reasonably be expected that the leader of a Baptist church whose slogan is “Where EVERYONE Is Welcomed and Loved” might make room for those in the LGBT community who care to get legally betrothed. Not so. Just over two years ago, the clergyman wrote a sermon in which he called the efforts by gays to
legally marry in the United States, “a war against the Biblical model of marriage and family.” He said that it was “a very similar battle” to the Serbian attempts at ethnic cleansing. Ethnic cleansing? According to Thompson, “We have been told by the opposition that we are not to engage in the conflict…we are merely to observe. However, in the life of every true follower of Christ, there must be a sense of personal, biblical and moral accountability to act when we see an opponent dedicated to destroying a God-directed biblical pattern for marriage. A failure to engage rejects everything we know about TRUTH from the spoken word. Make no mistake, the family unit is under attack; the definition of biblical marriage is under attack. As a result there must be a biblical response; a response that deals only in defense of biblical truth and not in the personal attacks of others who would disagree with a biblical position.” While no one should deny Pastor Thompson’s right to preach any sermon he wants, and hold any opinion about same-sex marriage he cares to, to compare
the LGBT community’s campaign to gain legal status to be married anywhere in the United States to Serbian attempts at ethnic cleansing is not only unholy, but morally reprehensible. According to the United Nations Security Council’s report on the subject by experts investigating the atrocities, ethnic cleansing was carried out in the former Yugoslavia “by means of murder, torture, arbitrary arrest and detention, extra-judicial executions, rape and sexual assaults, confinement of civilian population in ghetto areas, forcible removal, displacement and deportation of civilian population, deliberate military attacks or threats of attacks on civilians and civilian areas, and wanton destruction of property. Those practices constitute crimes against humanity and can be assimilated to specific war crimes. Furthermore, such acts could also fall within the meaning of the Genocide Convention.” To equate the rights of two people in love who are trying to join together in matrimony to war crimes that include murder, torture and imprisonment goes beyond opinion and logic. It is offensive to the moral responsibilities of his parishioners in general, and to the entire LGBT community in particular—some of whom attend First Baptist Church. Thompson further suggests, “The image of God is both revealed in the male and female and is reflected in a godly union between a man and woman. In this union, we find the creative power of God and the life-giving power of God. His moral nature is perfectly expressed. This is only possible in a heterosexual union.” Yet what of the gay man with his gay husband; the lesbian woman with her lesbian wife? Surely, they too were created by God—yes, in his image. Or, are we just God’s mistake. But indeed God doesn’t make mistakes. Even Pastor Thompson knows that much.

La Jolla Playhouse (2910 La Jolla Village Dr., 858-550-1070) stages the world premiere of “Kingdom City,” from Sept. 4-Oct.5.The South Bay Pride Art & Music Festival is on Saturday, Sept. 13 at the J Street Marina in the Bayfront Park (550 Marina Pkwy.). In the fall Manhattan is so beautiful, it inspired a classic lyric, “Autumn in New York. Why does it seem so inviting? Autumn in New York, it spells the thrill of first-nighting.” With the tourists and snot-nosed kids gone, enjoy quick access to museums and tourist attractions without long lines. You may be able to snap up a pair of seats to Broadway’s hottest plays. Shows generating buzz include the revival of “On The Town,” which begins previews Sept.20 at the Lyric Theatre (213 W. 42nd Street, 212-556-4750). “It’s Only A Play,” Terrence McNally’s latest comedy starring Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane, Megan Mullaly, F. Murray Abraham, Stockard Channing and Rupert Grint should be in previews through early October at the Schoenfeld Theatre (236 W. 45th St., 212-239-6200). “The Last Ship” marks Sting’s first foray onto Broadway as a composer. Its first preview is scheduled for Sept. 30 at the Neil Simon Theater (250 W. 52nd St., 212-757-8646.) New York is also a foodies’ paradise, so check out the 10th annual Vendy Awards on Saturday Sept. 13 at Governors Island. Dubbed the “Oscars of Street Food,” the Vendy Awards festival is an intense cook-off between the city’s top sidewalk vendors. The $95 ticket includes a sampling of the best dishes from more than 25 food vendors, along with allyou-can drink Brooklyn Beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages from GuS Sodas. ecause of the start of the new school year, very few families travel in September, which makes it a terrific time to travel. Crowds are almost nonexistent and the weather is as good, if not better then the summer months. As a bonus, prices are lower, because supply outstrips demand. Check out these places, all perfect for a September getaway. In San Francisco, summer months are chilly and foggy, while fall tends to be warmer and sunnier. Hotel rates won’t necessarily be lower, but you can Cast of save money if you avoid the business “It’s Only a Play” hotel chains and search out quaint inns and B&Bs. This September, the touring company of the Tony award-winning revival of “Pippin” opens at the Golden Gate Theater (1 Taylor St, 415-551-2050) on September 23. For those with a sweet tooth, the Ghirardelli Chocolate Festival, on Sept. 13 and 14, is a must. Get your tickets before they sell out Folsom Street Fair at www.ghirardelli.com/ chocolatefestival. The city’s Fringe Festival runs Sept. 5 through 20. If you’re into leather, or just hot men, the Folsom Street Fair takes place Sunday, Sept. 21 and, on eve of the fair, there’s also the “Magnitude” circuit party. If you’ve got the time to extend your vacation, stay a couple weeks and take in the Castro Street Fair on Oct. 5. The best time to visit Hawaii is the fall, the quiet time between summer and the snowbird season. Less demand Humpback in the fall brings on some incredible whales deals, not only in accommodations, but airfares. juicy, and topped with Swiss cheese and grilled onions. We had ours served with Bleu cheese dressing and a splash of A1. You’ll only be disappointed when it’s all gone! While we miss having tuna saladon the menu, either as a wrap or a sandwich, we made do on another visit by trying the heavier Steak Wrap ($9.25) with shaved marbled beefsteak, mushrooms, onions, and provolone cheese, all wrapped in a tortilla that barely contains its goodies. Is it the best steak sandwich in town? Well, no. But it comes in close if a cheesy, gooey maze of taste translates into your idea of a hearty lunch. Lest we forget to mention, making the cut from old menu to new are the amazing Smoked Gouda Mac N Cheese Nuggets ($6.00). In this original dish from the Rumors’ kitchen, macaroni and cheese is prepared using soft Gouda cheese and then cubed into bite-sized pieces, then fried to perfection. If it all sounds strange, that thought leaves your mind upon first taste. Chicken Wings (6 for $6.75; 10 for $8.75) has long been a staple of the Rumors’ menu. Hobo’s keeps them front and center with Hobo’s Daredevil Buffalo Sauce, Barbeque, Mild or Medium Cajun, Lemon Pepper, and Thai Chili Sauce flavoring them just so. Yes, you can still get them plain, but why not go for the gusto and commit to one or more of the tantalizing sauces. For traditionalist, grab some celery and Bleu cheese to tamper the taste for an addition $1.25. Worth every penny. If you’ve got any room left, we highly recommend Chef’s Howie’s AwardWinning Double Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake ($4.25). Big enough to share, but do you really want to be that gracious? That’s what we thought… and don’t forget to tell them the Agenda sent you as you lick your lips.

obo’s, the reincarnated Grill from the folks at Rumor’s Bar, has opened its kitchen (until 11 p.m. most nights, 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday) with a refreshed menu for the curious, but with enough of its former fabulous favs to satisfy loyal customers that find reliable bar cuisine to their palate. Hobo’s Clucker ($9.25), the grill’s chicken tenders sandwich, bears little resemblance to anything fast food. These fresh tenderloins of chicken breast are grilled (not fried as you would expect) and topped with Swiss cheese, mushrooms, and bacon. We had ours served on a Kaiser roll, but white, wheat and rye breads are available as well. Large, juicy and worth every calorie. Also new on the Hobo menu: Bay Scallops Poor Boy Sandwich ($11.50). While not resembling anything you might find in a traditional Po’ Boy from Louisiana, the Hobo’s version features fried fresh bay scallops, Cajun tartar sauce, lettuce, tomato and onions on a soft sub roll. This Poor Boy is also available with fried shrimp, and is equally as filling and fulfilling. Fresh fish makes another comeback at Hobo’s with its Fried Seafood Plates ($12.00), featuring Haddock, Shrimp or Bay Scallops—or get all three together of $29.00. Of the group, the haddock is the winner, moist and flaky and served with your choice of two sides (French fries, sweet potato fries, tator tots, cole slaw, garlic bacon potato salad, tomato slices and veggie du jour). A baked potato adds $3.00 to the cost, is huge and of the Idaho kind (with sour cream and butter). Onion rings can be added for $2.00 and a delicious treat. Rumor’s has always been famous for its burgers, and Hobo’s doesn’t disappoint in the Black Angus division. The Patty Melt Supreme ($9.75), a holdover from the old menu, is thick,

rotic sci-fi mood piece “Under The Skin” (A24/ Lionsgate) could sure use subtitles. That’s only when there’s dialogue, of which there is a minimum, mainly spoken in thick Scottish brogues. An alien being arrives in Scotland and assumes the visage of Scarlett Johansson. After putting on a dead woman’s clothes, she hits the mall for a new wardrobe and some cosmetics. She then proceeds to drive around town, observing human behavior. What she’s really there for is to pick up single men with no families, bring them to her place and lure them into a black pool where they are transformed into a kind of extra-terrestrial sustenance. She also keeps herself busy witnessing a seaside drowning, trying to eat human food (layer cake is a definite “no”), and burning up as much fossil fuel as she can. However, an encounter with a disfigured man has an unexpected impact on her. To her dismay, she also finds herself being transformed, becoming, dare it be said, human. When she finally does have sex, Homo sapien-style, it doesn’t go that well. Occasionally, visually interesting, the special effects, what little there are of them, are cool enough to make us want to see more. Mostly, they are listless and mannered, an excuse for some to see Johansson in various states of undress. DVD special features include a “making of” featurette.

Scarlett Johansson in “Under The Skin”
Shortly before college graduation in NYC and relocation to Iowa for grad school, obsessive, and somewhat anti-social, Doc takes a chance and reaches out to Go (stripper-turnedactor Matthew Camp), a “dancer of the go-go variety” with a “corn-fed epic ass,” on the pretense that he is making, well, a doc about the NYC nightlife scene. Usually content with his online sex life (including jerking off on his webcam and surfing Internet porn), Doc’s “profound” and “serious crush” on Go leads him outside of his comfort zone. After drunk posting an email to Go proposing his project, and getting a reply in the affirmative, Doc meets “New York’s finest boy on the box” for some preliminary details. Go agrees to do it for 5% of the profits and the interview and
filming process begins. Basically using his iPhone to film Go in his apartment, where his artwork and tattoo supplies are on display, Doc attempts to finding a story in Go’s story, but it’s all pretty flimsy. Naturally, there is sexual tension, leading to sex, the beginnings of a relationship, a trip to Fire Island, discussions of queer culture, and the inevitable--Doc catches Go having sex with someone else. In between, there are clever Warhol homages (including his “Eating” and “Kiss”) and provocative comments on the state of gay relationships. By the time Go turns the camera on Doc, you know the end is near. “Getting Go” is at turns sweet, silly and sexy (if a bit overly long), and definitely entertaining. DVD special features include an interview
with Krueckeberg, a Matthew Camp slideshow and more.

n French with subtitles, “Man At Bath” (Canteen Outlaws) stars tattoo-scalped gay pornstar Francois Sagat as Emmanuel, a narcissistic hustler who thinks nothing of raping filmmaker boyfriend Omar (Omar Ben Sellem) before he leaves on a trip to NYC to attend a film fest. As he departs, Omar asks Emmanuel to move out of the apartment. What follows is a series of flashbacks of happier times combined with each man’s experiences in their present day situations that are alternately humorous, erotic and emotional. Watch for gay writer Dennis Cooper as the guys’ off-balance neighbor Robin. DVD contains no bonus material.

Despite a recent controversy with GLAAD over seemingly homophobic remarks made during his stint on “The Voice,” Blake Shelton imagines himself a friend to everyone (his response was “go find a real enemy”). Shelton is a country music superstar, having certified gold for his first three albums. This roundtable discussion focuses on the needs for stronger arts programs in both secondary and higher education. With both the rising popularity of Art Basel and the opening of the Perez Art Museum, Miami has evolved into one of the strongest art centers in the world. As Miami begins to grow artistically, it would make sense for the art school system to expand as well. The forum will discuss how comprehensive and innovative art initiatives can become a force for change on the local art scene. Can Miami prepare local talent for roles in the art world at its traditional institutions or should alternative educational models be created? Come out and share your thoughts. 7:00 p.m. Locust Projects. 3852 N. Miami Ave. Suite 100. Miami. 33127.

SPECIAL HEALTH REPORT BY PETER JACKSON, CPT
ASK THE FITNESS MAN THE TRUTH ABOUT BREAKFAST
M
ore than of 65 percent of Americans are short-changing their health, fitness goals and optimal daily human performance by eating an unhealthy breakfast – or worse, not eating breakfast at all. Reviewing food diaries and helping clients improve their nutrition as part of my occupation gives me a first-hand perspective into how, what and when people are eating. More than half of us are skipping out on a healthy breakfast and often not eating anything at all. That’s just not good. Of a randomly-selected 100 clients whose food diaries I have reviewed in the last year:
7% ate no breakfast at all and made lunch the first meal of the day; 3 19% ate an unhealthy or insufficient breakfast; and 9% ate usually only a greasy, fat-laden fast food breakfast and/or 1 to 3 cups of coffee.
You’ve heard it before: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But do you understand why taking the time to start your day with a nutritious meal can improve your health? After a night’s sleep, the body is in starvation mode and needs nutrition to end that fast and provide energy to power through the morning. If you skip breakfast, that fast will continue until you eat lunch, some 12 or more hours, and your body won’t be able to produce the enzymes it needs to metabolize fat. When finally you do eat, chances are you will be so hungry that you overeat, consuming too many calories at one meal – again promoting fat-gain.
Here are three of my breakfast staples:
BLUEBERRY OATMEAL ake oatmeal a part of your regular breakfast. It’s M high in fiber and protein, stabilizes blood sugar thus reducing the risk of diabetes, removes bad cholesterol from the body and is great for your heart – and that’s just the start of the long list of benefits of eating oatmeal. I usually make a big batch of steel-cut oats, pour it into three of four small containers and refrigerate. When I’m running late, breakfast is already made.
YOU’LL NEED (PER SERVING) 1/4 cup of rolled oats 1/2 cup of almond milk or skim milk 1/4 c up of vanilla whey protein powder ½ tsp of cinnamon ½ tsp of nutmeg 1 handful of fresh blueberries
