KENNESAW, GA—Daniel AshleyPierce, a 20-year-old from Kennesaw, Georgia, secretly filmed a five-minute video of the moment he came to his religious right parents, and was violently attacked and verbally assaulted. The resulting video, titled “How Not to React When Your Child Tells You He is Gay,” was posted on YouTube by Ashley-Pierce’s boyfriend, went viral and has now been seen by over a million viewers. As tragic as it is to watch, those who work with gay and lesbian teens said the scene plays out in homes across American homes every day. Victor Diaz-Herman from Pridelines, a group serving the needs of South Florida’s gay and lesbian youth, told a Miami television station, “I think above all it creates awareness, what our young people face when they come out to their families.” In the U.S., studies show 40 percent of homeless youths are gay, lesbian or transgender, kicked out of their homes like Ashley-Pierce, who faced verbal abuse and violence that involved his

LAS VEGAS—When she’s not performing on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights in her “Piece of Me” show at the Planet Hollywood’s Axis Theater in Las Vegas, the “Oops…I Did It Again” singer is quietly inspiring teen gays. One such individual is David LeCoers II. The gay superfan of Spears recently had VIP seats to her show and took a backstage tour during which he gave the performer a letter in which he told her that her songs and lyrics helped him “through a real tough period in (my) life these past couple of months, and I wanted to end it all but (you) made me strong.” Spears was so moved by the note that she wrote one of her own that read: “Dear David, I was so happy to receive you letter. I was very happy to hear about how courageous you’ve been about openly gay. I’ve always been told that as long as you know in your heart that’s what matter (sic) most. I try to follow my heart and dreams every day of my life and I think that’s why I am where I am today. Given the number of fans who see her perform nightly—the Axis Theater holds over 4,000 seats and has been operating at capacity since Spears debuted in December 27, 2013. LeCoers obviously touched the star who reportedly earns $15 million per year for her effort. Planet Hollywood revealed that during a typical month, Spears’ 12 shows gross $8 million.

The documentary, by director Joe Cardona in association with the Miami Herald Media Company, was recognized for “great technical execution, good variety of material sources, clear, in-depth interviews.” The film, which aired nationally on PBS, was co-written by Cardona and Nancy San Martin and played last June in local cinemas includ-

ing the Classic Gateway in Fort Lauderdale. “The Day It Snowed in Miami” covers the political battle lines in 70s iami when gays sought approval of a then-controversial human rights law. Appeals Court Rejects Pam Bondi Request to Delay Ruling in Same-Sex Marriage Cases MIAMI — The 3rd District Court of Appeal rejected Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi’s request last week to hold off on ruling on the constitutionality of Florida’s gay-marriage ban until after the U.S. Supreme Court rules on the issue. An enormous blow to the state’s campaign to take itself off the hot seat, and slide the same-sex marriage-ban issue out of its jurisdiction, Gov. Rick Scott now finds himself in a politically tenuous position. In an election year, his refusal to take a leadership position in the fight for marriage equality within the LGBT community has left him with few options. (See “Florida’s SameSex Couples Could Start Marrying On September 22” on this page.) The ruling itself was brief and to the point. “Upon consideration, appellant’s motions to stay briefing are denied,” the Miami-based 3rd District Court of Appeal said in a terse ruling Thursday. “That is the best news of the day. We would have been sitting in limbo for an undetermined amount of time,” attorney Bernadette Restivo said, according to the Miami Herald. Restivo represents Aaron Huntsman and William Lee Jones, two Key West bartenders who won the right to marry in Monroe County Circuit Court last July 17. “Pam Bondi’s stay would have caused enormous irreparable harm to the plaintiffs and others similarly situated. Every day that we move forward in this case will hopefully mean we are moving closer to ending this oppressive discrimination.” Bondi, who has been receiving a wash of criticism over her repeated appeals of Federal cases in favor of allowing samesex marriage in Florida, was uncharacteristically quiet after the ruling. “The Court has ruled that the case will move forward, and we will proceed accordingly,” Bondi’s spokewoman Jennifer

Comment on: “Baptist Pastor Compares Same-Sex Marriage to Serbia’s Ethnic Cleansing” (8/27/14) This homophobic preacher is not alone in Fort Lauderdale. The 5,000 or so Naugle-ites that are the regular voters here in local elections run this City, and maintain the 1950’s attitude toward gays and lesbians. We allow them to dictate the politician’s attitudes here because we can’t be bothered to vote ourselves. If we got off our asses and got involved in local politics, these nut jobs would slink back into the shadows where they belong. We are part of a city that is too diverse and progressive to allow these homophobes to spout off unchallenged! Get involved in local politics!

10-3 to “pass through” the case of Mariama Monique Changamire Shaw and Keiba Lynn Shaw, a lesbian couple married in Massachusetts in 2010, who are now seeking a divorce in Tampa. Hillsborough County Circuit Judge Laurel Lee refused to grant the couple a divorce because state law bans same-sex marriages. At press time, the Florida Supreme Court had not decided whether to hear the case. In unrelated court actions, on August 4th, Broward Circuit Judge Dale Cohen agreed to dissolve the Vermont civil union of Heather Brassner, a Lake Worth, Florida-based art dealer, whose former partner Megan Lade, cheated on her and then mysteriously disappeared. Cohen said that he would formally grant the divorce on Sept. 10th unless Bondi appealed his decision, according to Brassner’s attorney Nancy Brodski of Coral Springs. On August 5th, Palm Beach County Judge Diana Lewis ruled in favor of W. Jason Simpson, who had filed suit to be designated the official “personal representative” in the estate of his late husband Frank Bangor. Bangor died on March 14 after a 37-year relationship with Simpson. The couple was married last year in Delaware. In her ruling, Lewis noted that shortly after Bangor died, the state of Pennsylvania legalized gay marriage and that Florida’s anti-gay marriage laws “unnecessarily discriminate” against Simpson, while agreeing to Simpson’s action. The Simpson case only applies to the Bangor estate, however, and will become official during the second week in September unless Bondi appeals that ruling, according to Simpson’s attorney Drew Fein of Boca Raton. On Aug. 21st, U.S. District Judge Robert L. Hinkle of Tallahassee ruled against Bondi, declaring the Florida’s gay-marriage ban discriminates against nine married couples and others who sued to have out-of-state marriages recognized by Florida. Hinkle stayed his ruling awaiting the appeal process as well.

Meale announced. Last July 17th, Monroe Chief Circuit Judge Luis Garcia declared Florida’s 2008 gay-marriage ban unconstitutional, ruling against Bondi, whose office defended the ban. Bondi immediately appealed that ruling, which placed the decision in an automatic holding position. On July 25th, Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Sarah Zabel also ordered that six other same-sex couples be allowed to marry, but stayed her ruling after Bondi appealed that decision as well. Then on last August 7th, Bondi played what was to be her final hand in this legal battle, asking the 3rd DCA not to hear the cases until after the U.S. Supreme Court decides the issue. Not wanting to wait for the U.S. Supreme Court to decide whether or not it will even hear any of the pending same-sex marriage cases currently making their ways through the court system, the 3rd DCA balked. It has been well over a year since the U.S. Supreme Court threw out a key portion of the federal Defense of Marriage Act and ordered the U.S. government to recognize the Canadian marriage of lesbian Edith Windsor, a New York widow. Since then, same-sex couples have won more than 30 times in federal, state and appellate courts, according to the group Freedom to Marry. In addition to its rejection of Bondi’s position, the appeals court ruled that it would consolidate the Monroe County and Miami-Dade County cases together. “For consistency sake, the cases are very similar,” Restivo told the Miami Herald. “We have been working in conjunction with the attorneys in the [Miami-Dade] case. It’s important for us to work together to narrowly tailor the issues on appeal. We’re speaking out of one voice sending the exact issues up to the Florida Supreme Court. The appeals court ruling came just a day after a state appeals court in Central Florida asked the Florida Supreme Court to decide the issue once and for all. The 2nd DCA agreed

y partner Michael was in Atlanta last weekend, a long overdue visit to his old hometown to pick up some left-behind clothing, which seemed like a good enough excuse to catch up with old friends after an absence of a year and a half. If he had expected much in the way of change, he didn’t find it. The horrific traffic was as awful as ever. Or maybe it just seemed that way since Michael is spoiled by Fort Lauderdale’s ease of mobility. In any case, he was happy to get back to the Sunshine State, which lived up to its moniker by supplying 100-degree heat and a warm tropical breeze from the south. It also welcomed him back to town with a flyer for the city’s newest gym—Crunch Fitness (3460 N Andrews Ave. in Oakland Park, FL 33309). It’s the newest branch of the national chain that’s been syphoning members from our old standby Steel Gym in Wilton Manors, which is now leaking members faster than the condensation from its aging AC. Unfortunately, by the time my Mandingo returned to town, his promised advertised flyer deal-of-a-lifetime--$9.95 a month and no initiation fee-- had expired. The current base membership price is still $9.95 a month (no contract, month-to-month), but you now must pay a $39.00 enrollment fee, a prorated $7.25 “annual fee” and taxes of $3.37, for a total of $59.57 to walk in the door. Don’t ask if there are catches. Of course there are. It’s a gym membership, after all, and we all know what that means. In this case, the damage isn’t too bad. You do get access to all the free weights, treadmills, elliptical trainers and free on-lline nutritional advice.

What you don’t get is to take any of the classes that run throughout the week, and are already extremely popular (even though the gym only officially opened a couple of weeks ago). For that privilege, you’ve got to open the purse for a Peak Membership, which costs more per month ($19.95), but less for initiation (19.00). The annual fee remains the same. This level of membership also gets you free tanning, for those of you who think our own blazing sun is somehow lacking. Oh, and you gain entrance into other Crunch facilities, for those Have Gun, Will Travel kinda guys. And they also throw in a free Hydromassage— the water-based system that was all the rage a few years back and still has its share of fans. For those with youngins’, you might want to consider the Peak Plus Membership, which runs $29.95 per month with a $9.95 initiation, etc., etc. It includes all that the Plus membership does in addition to babysitting in

the Crunch Kid’s room. The gym itself is a huge place, some 10,000 square feet, with brand new equipment throughout. Star Trac treadmills and lifting machines, Hoist ellipticals, pumching and kickboxing bags, an enormous free stretching and workout area, plus enough free weights, each emblazoned with the Crunch logo, in case you forget where you are. If the packed place is any indication, the membership drive has worked its magic, and brought the heavyweights and their fans out to Andrews on the north side of Oakland Park. Yes, it’s the ghetto with its Sav-a-Lot store and Wing Loon Chinese take out. But the price is right and the mottos are many: “Perspire to Greatness” and the like. Still and all, it’s not Steel Gym with its torn floor mats, worn weights, and leaking roof. To get that, you’ve got to stay closer to home, where the smell from Alibi’s Kitchen inspires you to work off the fat, and see the boys. The choice is yours….Until next week.

COVER STORY BY RICHARD HACK

Newest Legal Strategy:

GAYS ARE “TOO RESPONSIBLE” TO NEED MARRIAGE

September 3, 2014

12

F

irst gays were said to be child molesters, pedophiles, “incestagators,” and morally corrupt. We were accused of wanting to lower the age of consent, being substandard parents, and forcing our definition of equality down America’s collective throat. But never have members of the LGBT community been called “too responsible.” Or at least not until last Tuesday in the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals. Arguments were being made by the states of Wisconsin and Indiana before a three-judge panel comprised of Judges Richard Posner, Ann Claire Williams and David Hamilton hearing both cases. Posner is a Reagan appointee. Williams was originally appointed to a lower court by Reagan and later appointed by Clinton to the circuit. Hamilton was the first judicial appointment that Obama made. The state of Indiana was represented in court by that state’s attorney general Thomas Fischer who attempted to argue that marriage was needed for heterosexual couples to lessen the number of children born to unwed couples. ““All this is a reflection of biology,” Fisher said. “Men and women make babies, same-sex couples do not… we have to have a mechanism to regulate that, and marriage is that mechanism.” The fact that same-sex couples by themselves cannot produce biological babies, according to the state of Indiana, suggests that there is no need to have a mechanism in place to home them responsible. On that point alone, same-sex couples are “too responsible”

to be held hostage by children born of a “moment of passion.” Heterosexuals are not. Judge Posner, in particular, was not buying into the fact that Indiana, which allows gays to adopt children and raise them as their own, should by law deny these same gay parents the right to marry. He asked how the state would be harmed by such allowing same-sex marriage to be legal. Posner also lampoon Fischer’s contention that legally married heterosexual couples were models of normality to be followed by law. “That’s ridiculous, if you don’t mind my saying. You have some 80-year-old cousins who are allowed to get married and you say that that is a model for family formation,” Posner ridiculed. When questioned about evidence, Fischer suggested that “it is self-evident.” “I regard it as absurd,” Posner countered. At one point, Posner ran through a list of psychological strains on unmarried same-sex couples, including having to struggle to grasp why their schoolmates’ parents were married and theirs weren’t. “What horrible stuff,” Posner said. What benefits to society in barring gay marriage, he asked, “outweighs that kind of damage to children?” Lawyers representing both states, along with attorneys for the American Civil Liberties Union and Lambda Legal, a national group working for gay rights, were allotted 20 minutes each to

argue their case. When it was Wisconsin’s turn to argue its case, the result was no less devastating for state attorney general Timothy Samuelson, who repeated used the word “tradition” as a reasoning why heterosexual couples had marriage rights and homeosexuals coupled did not. “It was tradition to not allow blacks and whites to marry — a tradition that got swept away,” Posner said, reminding the AG of the decision brought forth under Loving vs. Virginia, the landmark civil rights case decided in 1967 allowing blacks and whites to marry. Prohibition of same-sex

marriage, he said, is “a tradition of hate … and savage discrimination.” Often, the both states’ attorneys general seemed at a loss to answer questions about their own argument’s lack of specific evidence, making the uphill battle each was facing seem far more unobtainable. As Samuelson struggled to offer a specific reason for how gay marriage bans benefit society, he suddenly noted a yellow courtroom light signaling his allotted time was up. “It won’t save you,” Williams told him, prompting laughter in court. Samuleson smiled, and said: “it was worth a try.”

Drake vs. Lil’ Wayne Tampa The day after playing West Palm Beach, Drake and Lil’ Wayne drive up to Tampa for another concert face-off. Before his big break, Drake spent much of his time filming the Canadian hit series “Degrassi: The Next Generation.” His tenure as physically disabled teenager Jimmy Brooks lasted for 138 episodes. In 2010 his life changed even more drastically—his first album, “Thank Me Later,” sold the most single copies in one week. Lil’ Wayne began his rap career when he was only nine, signing with Cash Money Records. His career took off in 2004 with the release of “The Carter.” Since then, even Barack Obama has stated his fond-

ness for the rapper’s music. Billed as “Drake vs Lil’ Wayne” the concert is sure to be full of rap disses. 7:00 p.m. MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre. 4802 N. U.S. Highway 301. Tampa. 33610.

Despite having to cancel recent concerts so drummer Nathan Followill could recover from injuries sustained in a bus accident, Kings of Leon are still planning to perform their Southern rock tonight at the Cruzan Amphitheatre. Kings of Leon found critical and commercial success in the mid naughties with their album “Only by the Night” and acclaimed singles “Sex on Fire,” “Use Somebody,” and “Notion.” “Use Somebody” in particular garnered much accolades, including the prestigious Grammy for Record of the Year. SOMETHING FOR THE LADIES

A

few months ago, we took a look at the tops spas in the country welcoming to the GLBT community. Many of those were men-only resorts, so we thought it proper to give the women their due. While I can’t personally attest to the quality of the following womenonly spas for obvious reasons, all come highly rated.

Hot House (Seattle, WA) Hothouse is a shared space and reservations are not taken for the spa. During winter months, consider going early or late in the day, as a full house is common during evenings. Entry allows use of the hot tub, steam room, sauna, cold plunge, showers and relaxation area. It is about $20 a day to use the space; massages are available at additional cost. http://www. hothousespa.com/

Thousand Waves Spa (Chicago, IL) In the words of the spa’s web site Thousand Waves is “... a place for women to relax and rejuvenate. It’s an environment where community is key and all women feel welcome.” The facilities in the spa bath area include a eucalyptus steam room, cedar sauna and hot tub and relaxation room. A stand-alone visit is $20, massages and herbal wraps are available, at additional cost. http://www.thousandwavesspa.com/

Kelea Surf Spa (Oahu, HI) When a place is named after a Hawaiian leader who relinquished power to follow her surfing bliss, it should come as no surprise that this place is all about surfing and bliss. Surfing, yoga, and spa

six-night packages include surf lessons, three meals daily, a massage, yoga classes, and airport transfers. Kelea is only open February through April as that’s when the surfing best for beginners and intermediates. It’s more expensive if you’re booking alone, so come with a friend or be open to having an assigned roommate. To try this experience at other times of the year (and save a little money) look into Kelea’s sister property in Costa Rica. www. keleasurfspa.com

Bali Goddess Retreat (Seminyak, Bali) This is not the kind of yoga retreat where participants have to take a vow of silence or only get offered raw veggies for dinner. It is a balance between relaxation and action; health and indulgence. Amenities include a large swimming pool with sun loungers, bar area with endless purified spring water, coffee, tea, fruit baskets and

snacks, a spa offering onsite massages and treatments, an open air yoga studio and rooftop relaxation patio with daybeds and amazing sunset views. http://www.baligoddessretreats.com/

Holly Branch Retreat (Piedmont NC) Designed around the concept of quality psychotherapy for women in a healing and restorative environment for the mind & body, Holly Branch Retreat offers intensive therapy and between therapy sessions, visitors may opt for yoga classes, facials, massage. All-inclusive pricing fees offer three gourmet meals per day, 15 to 20 hours of therapy (both individual and small group) during a six day visit, a choice of activities including; massages, facials, photography or computer classes and shuttle to and from the local airport. www.hollybranchretreat.com

Olympus Spa (Tacoma WA) Open since 1997, Olympus is a beautiful and elegant oasis for women devoted to the restoration of the body, mind, and soul. Eastern medicinal traditions blend with Western relaxation techniques in heated earth energy rooms, hydrotherapy pools and saunas. Spa packages range from $153 for a day pass, body scrub and body moisturizing to a “Total Bliss” package for $294 which adds on a massage and body wrap. www.olympusspa.net

WARMING UP—

FOREPLAY TO A BETTER WORKOUT!

G

September 3, 2014

22

eneral warming up refers to any physical activity that jacks up muscle and body temperature. A general warmup is essential to every workout in the gym. Examples of whole body general warm-ups are light jogging, calisthenics, jumping rope and riding a stationary bike. Usually a slight increase in muscle and body temperature can be achieved by any one of these activities in five to seven minutes prior to a workout or sporting activity. Warming up also affords you the opportunity to get psyched up mentally for the challenge ahead as you loosen up muscles and joints. A specific warm up involves movements that are similar to what you will be doing (golfing, bowling, martial arts, running a marathon, etc.), but at much lower intensity level. This not only increases muscle and body temperature, but also provides a rehearsal of the actual event, which may improve your performance. For example, in the

gym, if you are preparing to do bench presses with your buddies, do some light weight dumbbell bench presses before loading up the bar with monster weight. Typically, one to three sets of 10 – 15 reps using a light to moderate weight should be sufficient; more advanced gym rats may have to warm up longer and more intensely to achieve an optimal body temperature. A few wind sprints would provide you with an excellent warm-up for a marathon run, I think you get the over-all idea. The theoretical purposes of warm up exercises include increased muscle temperature, improved metabolic adjustment to heavy work and greater number of capillaries opened in the muscles. Warming up also helps rev up your metabolism to burn more calories more efficiently. There are several psychological factors created by warm-ups. Skilled performance improves with brief warm up activities identical or directly related to the sport. Warming up also helps you

Generally speaking, a moderate 10-minute… warm-up is great for a weight training session.

to rid yourself of distractions and clear your mind as you focus upon the tasks ahead. There is however one potentially negative effect of warm ups: if your warm up is too long or too intense you can fatigue and your performance may suck! So don’t overdo your warming up session. Generally speaking, a moderate 10-minute generalized warm-up is great for a weight training session. A longer and more specific warm-up, say 20 minutes, is preferred for a specific athletic event like golf, tennis or a marathon run. What about stretching? Stretching is another

important preparatory activity used to improve flexibility and physical performance. Flexibility is defined as the range of motion possible around a specific joint. In weight training, a lack of flexibility can lead to injuries including muscle strains and sprains. After warming up, perform three reps of at least one static stretch for each major muscle group you will be training. Hold the stretch for 15 to 30 seconds at a point of mild discomfort. Never bounce on a stretch and make sure to breathe out on each stretch. More extensive stretching is typically more

beneficial during the workout between sets or muscle groups that you are training. Remember, a five to ten minute warm up along with a few light stretches can heat up your body and muscles and unleash the lion inside of you. Like good, hot foreplay, warming up is just what you need to prepare for the dynamite session that awaits you. Contact Tom Bonanti with your workout questions at trainertomb@aol.com . T

his is an easy peasy recipe you can whip up in 2 minutes. It can be used a number of ways rather than just as a spread or a dip. Spread a thin layer of it on a chicken between the skin and the breast, maybe with some fresh herbs before roasting; put dabs on hard-boiled eggs and top with pine nuts; or spread it on a sandwich instead of mustard or mayo. You can fold some into an omelet, or toss it in pasta as an instant sauce with chunks of fresh cooked

Combine the garlic, olives, anchovies, capers, thyme, rosemary, and lemon juice in your electric blender. Slowly drip the olive oil into the blender while you are blending the ingredients together. Blend until a paste is formed. Don’t add salt!!! Spread on pita bread, crackers, toasts… or use as a dip. Enjoy.

tuna. Be inventive you are the chef! Green and black olives are natural aphrodisiacs. Use them to spice up your palate and your plate for a taste of succulent seduction with your mate. Besides increasing your libido, olives are jam packed with health benefits, and being healthy is crucial to having a good sex life… Olives help prevent heart disease, prevent colon cancer, and one of the best reasons for me to eat olives is that they prevent frequency of hot flashes going through menopause. LOL.

(UN)AMERICAN HORROR STORIES

“O

nly Lovers Left Alive” (Sony Pictures Classics) looks and sounds like what you’d expect a contemporary Jim Jarmusch vampire movie to look and sound like; lots of interesting music and artfully shot scenes. If only it wasn’t so sluggish and overly long. Cleverly named ageless British vampires Adam (Tom Huddleston) and Eve (Tilda Swinton) have been married forever. There’s a photo of them, from their third wedding in 1868, which Eve admires. Like some long-married couples (see Dolly Parton and Carl Dean), Adam and Eve live in separate quarters in separate countries. Fittingly, he’s living in a ghost town called Detroit populated by young humans he refers to

as zombies. She’s living in Tangier where she hangs out with Christopher Marlowe (John Hurt). Yes, that Christopher Marlowe. Feeding on humans is passé in this day and age, so Marlowe supplies Eve with blood from a French pharmacist connection (a French connection, if you will). Adam gets his from Dr. Watson (Jeffrey Wright) at a hospital. Adam also pursues his music-making passion, paying cash for classic guitars brought to him by Ian (Anton Yelchin). As in all things vampire, a series of changes are afoot. Adam and Eve arrange a rendezvous in Detroit, and just in time, too, since Adam has asked Ian to have wooden bullet (with a brass casing) made for him. Suicidal much? Jarmusch’s modern

vamp romp comes off as a cautionary drug tale, and Swinton and Hurt are especially addictive.

“T

he Quiet Ones” (Lionsgate) is a noisy and unnecessary semihorror tale inspired by true events in the mid-1970s. Rogue Oxford University prod Joseph (an unwatchable Jared Harris) is obsessed with harnessing the negative energy of psychotic patient Jane (Olivia Cooke), even more so after he loses his funding. Recruiting two students--Harry (Rory Fleck-Byrne) and Krissi (Erin Richards), as well as non-student cameraman Brian (Sam Claflin) to assist in his questionable research, Joseph proceeds undeterred. With casual references to

mass-murder, demonic possession and the occult, the hokey “The Quiet” Ones is the kind of horror show that sets the genre back years. Not even gazing at Claflin (Finnick from “The Hunger Games”) can make “The Quiet Ones” worth your time. DVD + Digital Ultraviolet special features include deleted scenes, outtakes, audio commentary and more.

L

esbians longing for a 21st century “Claire of the Moon” need look no further than Marina Rice Bader’s noxious “Anatomy of a Love Seen” (Soul Kiss). From the effed-up play on words of the title to the insipid dialogue and plot, it’s hard not to think – “Please let this be an elaborate hoax” – while watching this lascivious lesbian loathe story. Actresses Zoe (Sharon Hinnendael) and Mal (Jill Evyn) have endured immeasurable pain and suffering while filming a love story as Ellie and Jordan for director Kara (Bader). Over the course of making the movie, they fell in and out of love, threatening the entire production. Kara gets the ex-lovebirds to return to the set on the pretense of finishing filming a crucial love scene. The combination of the woowoo prayers of Kara’s new-age zombie assistant Anne (Constance Brenneman), the actor-speak, the tears and hyperventilating, the saccharine score, and the rote recovery recitations, this “Love” not only dare not utter its name, it doesn’t deserve to be “Seen.” Consider this review an open letter to director Marina Rice Bader to simply say, we already have one Nicole Conn, we don’t need another. For the love of lesbians, please stop immediately! (“Anatomy of a Love Story” is available for viewing on demand at https://vimeo.com/ondemand/ anatomyofaloveseen.)
