Lambda Legal client Fred McQuire. Fred and George met in 1969. George served in the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam, and Fred served in both the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Army and was stationed in Guam. After his military service, George joined the staff of Arizona’s Court of Appeals in Tucson, where he became the court’s first Deputy Clerk. He served in that role with dedication, professionalism and warmth for thirty years. In recent years, both George and Fred battled life-threatening illnesses which required multiple hospitalizations. Fred suffers from pulmonary disease and Parkinson’s, and George was diagnosed with prostate cancer three years ago that resulted from his exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam. While the prostate cancer was in remission, this past June George was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. The two married in California in July, slightly more than a month before George’s death.

Faced with an Uphill Battle, Anti-Gay Marriage Groups Go International

September 17, 2014 7

Things have not been going well for Brian Brown, the president of the National Organization for Marriage. As court case after court case have been being ruled in favor of allowing same-sex marriage to proceed in various states across the country, the man who preaches the horrors and damage done by allowing samesex couples to marry has tken his message to France, Trinidad and Tobago, Russia and Australia. Brown’s group is hardly the only anti-gay group to travel overseas

where their sales pitch of depravity falls on more welcoming ears than at home in America. The travel exodus from the U.S. has become so strong, in fact, that the one of the premier gay rights groups in the country, the Human Rights Campaign, started a special “global engagement program” last year to track their activities and help gay rights activists abroad. With a $1 million budget for its first year and five full-time staffers, the group released its most comprehensive report on the internationalization of the American anti-gay rights movement. The report, “The Export of Hate,” names the most prominent individuals and groups — Brown among them —working to pass anti-gay rights legislation abroad. “With anti-LGBT losses mounting in the United States, and with strong indications of increased activity abroad, more must be done to expose this work and the people doing it,” the report says. The report calls out Scott Lively, an American missionary who traveled to Uganda to warn about what he described as the evils of gay people in the runup to the passage of the country’s law that punished homosexuality with death. (The law was later toned down so that the maximum punishment is life in prison, before the nation’s highest court invalidated it.) Benjamin Bull, the chief counsel of the conservative legal group the Alliance Defending Freedom, is also cited for the alliance’s 2011 announcement that it would take its legal arguments against gay marriage overseas; it now supports groups that are working to uphold bans on same-sex marriage all over the world.

PHOENIX — A federal district court judge ordered the state of Arizona today to provide a death certificate that accurately reflects a recently deceased Green Valley man’s marriage to another man. Lambda Legal had requested a temporary restraining order last week on behalf of 69-yearold Fred McQuire, surviving husband of George Martinez, who died August 28 at the age of 62. Judge John Sedwick, visiting judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona, said Arizona officials must provide McQuire a death certificate that lists Martinez as legally married to McQuire. An accurate death certificate is necessary for a surviving spouse to settle their loved one’s affairs, as well as to collect veterans, social security and other benefits generally available to surviving spouses. “Today’s order means that Fred can grieve his husband with dignity and a lot less worry about his own future,” said Jennifer C. Pizer, Senior Counsel for Lambda Legal. “The way the state has fought this simple issue of awarding a disabled vet the respect he deserves is shameful. George would have been thrilled with this outcome—all he ever wanted to do was take care of Fred and Judge Sedwick’s order will make sure his last wish is fulfilled.” “I’m ecstatic and so grateful that my marriage to George is recognized. My birthday is next week and this is the best birthday present I could have ever hoped for. This is the highest honor that we could offer George and his memory—he would be so proud. Even though this ruling is for George and me, I hope this is going to help other families, too. No one else should have to deal with the pain and humiliation of not being able to take care of something as simple and sensitive as a death certificate for their spouse,” said

“Our primary focus is naming and shaming,” Jason Rahlan, communications director for the Human Rights Campaign, said of the report. “My sense is a lot of Americans and even a lot of folks in the LGBT community have absolutely no idea this is going on.” Some of the organizations profiled in the report have acknowledged in their own way that the line has moved irrevocably in the U.S. debate over gay rights. It’s been more than a decade since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down laws allowing states to punish same-sex sex acts with prison, and the U.S. debate now revolves around whether lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people have a right to marriage everywhere in the country, along with anti-discrimination protections at work. Groups like the Alliance Defending Freedom have given up on arguing that same-sex activities ought to remain criminal in America, and are instead focusing on preserving same-sex marriage bans. But in many other countries, including the 80 that outlaw being openly gay, the landscape is completely different — and much more welcoming to their arguments. “Oftentimes they work under the radar and they mask their intentions,” Rahlan said of the American activists. “They are a lot more active in the international space but are being very quiet about it,” said Becky Parks, the Human Rights Campaign’s associate director of global engagement. “I have been so excited to be part of this new international solidarity movement in defense of marriage, children and family,” Brown wrote on NOM’s blog last year. He did not respond to an interview request about NOM’s international expansion. Many of these overseas groups and individuals are expected to send representatives in October 2015 to Salt Lake City, Utah, for a World Congress of Families summit. The Human Rights Campaign will be watching the event closely, Rahlan said.

T

he third edition of the “Legal Handbook for LGBT Floridians and Their Families” is available from Equality Florida. It is a valuable tool for all LGBT Florida residents who are interested in the latest changes in the legal status and requirements of domestic partnerships, marriages and divorces. Equality Florida makes this publication, authored by legal firm Carlton Fields Jordan Burt. This Handbook is intended to be an easy reference source for same-sex couples in Florida – particularly with respect to long-term planning related to health, family and financial considerations. It contains useful legal and practical information on topics of special interest to our community, but its use is by no means limited to LGBT couples. Single Floridians, including unmarried couples, should find this booklet informative and helpful. The material provided is based on the laws and practices of the State of Florida and its agencies, and in some cases, the laws and practices of the federal government. This Handbook cannot answer every question, nor can it replace the advice and counsel of an attorney when needed. Rather, it provides information of a general nature and answers to some of the more common questions that LGBT Floridians often have. This Handbook deals with laws and policies that may change often, particularly in the area of LGBT rights. As such, it is an enormously helpful resource to direct you to general areas of knowledge for further specific investigation. “Discriminatory laws and the lack of legal protections impose hardships and complicate ordinary life for LGBT Floridians,” according to Equality Florida Institute executive director Nadine Smith. “This vital resource is vital is important to LGBt Floridians to understand how to protect themselves and their loved ones under the laws that current exist.” The handbook may be downloaded for free at www.eqfl.org/legalhandbook or received via written request to Equality Florida Institute, P.O. Box 13184, St Petersburg, FL 33733.

FORT LAUDERDALE—It was legal to get a same-sex divorce in Broward County for three days at the beginning of September 2014, the result of the ruling of 17th Judicial Circuit Judge Dale Cohen’s ruling in the case of Heather Brassner v. Megan E. Lade. It no longer is. Despite high expectation from Lake Worth art dealer Heather Brassner that the divorce she expected to receive from her spouse Megan Lade would be finalized last Wednesday in a 1:30 p.m. hearing in Cohen’s courtroom, her final victory was denied on a technicality. On September 9, 2014, Cohen issued a sua sponte order vacating his previous judgment in which he had ruled that denying same-sex couples the right to marry in the state of Florida violated the Federal constitution. On August 4, 2014 Cohen made national headlines by ruling that Florida’s 2008 amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman was a violation of same-sex couples’ due process and equal protection. He had stayed his ruling for 30 days, during which time he anticipated an appeal from Florida’s ambitious attorney general who has appealed similar cases throughout the state, at a cost of several million dollars in taxpayers’ money. When the expected appeal did not

MIAMI--It’s not polite to ask a girl her age, but in the case of Aqua, who turns 10 on September 20, it’s a cause for celebration. In this case, Aqua is the Aqua Foundation for Women, the women helping women non-profit started in 2004 by Alicia Apfel, Alison Burgos, Alyse McGowen, Cindy Brown, Elizabeth Schwartz, Martha Sternberg, Robin Schwartz, and Vivian Lamadrid. Based in Miami, the organization awards twelve scholarships to lesbian, bisexual or transgender women each year. Since its inception, several hundred thousand dollars in scholarships have been awarded. Furthermore, an Aqua member mentors each winner for the year. “I am so very proud of all Aqua has accomplished in ten years,” Aqua Foundation for Women executive director Robin Schwartz told She magazine. In addition to the scholarships, Aqua has “fostered collaboration with others to increase impact including partnering with the Miami Foundation and Our Fund to raise $100,000 to support LGBT youth who are homeless,” Schwartz said. On September 20, 2014, members, original founders, and guests will gather on the rooftop deck of the Gale South Beach Hotel (1690 Collins Ave., Miami Beach) to commemorate the past and celebrate the future. Tickets for Aqua members are $55; nonmembers $75; while $95 tickets are available at the door or at www.aquafoundation.org.

section 27 and Florida Statute 741.212 unconstitutional.” It was quite a disappointment for Brassner who had expected to be divorced by last Wednesday afternoon. Now she must continue to wait until the court hears from the office of Attorney General Pam Bondi. The words from Judge Cohen’s original ruling still are etched in her mind. “This court addresses the issues of liberty and equality and finds that without a rational relation to a legitimate state interest; Florida cannot impose inequality under the law,” Judge Cohen said.

Judge Dale Cohen

Cohen ruled in favor of a allowing a 40-something lesbian to divorce her 40-something same-sex spouse (they had been married in a civil union in Vermont), it appeared for a split second that Florida was actually making some headway in the bigotry department. Perhaps, we thought, we can finally put some distance between the state and the Anita Bryant fiasco in which hatred against homosexuals became the fodder for political cartoonists and country singers (of which Bryant was one). If we couldn’t lead the nation in same-sex marriages then, by God, we would lead the nation in samesex divorces—one at a time. It might not have needed white gowns and rice throwing, but same-sex divorce was something, at least. By last Tuesday, however, even that brief ray of normalcy was snuffed out when Judge Cohen finally decided to study his own ruling, and after four weeks, found a typo of sorts. It seems the correct paperwork had never been

aughing stock. While I’m not quite sure what the official definition of the old term is, I’m sure by this point the state of Florida plays a predominant part in it somewhere. First, we have an eerie-looking governor named Scott (last name, not first) who says that he wouldn’t dream of discriminating against anyone—this while openly encouraging his stooge of an attorney general to appeal civil case after civil case—all ruling that Florida’s ban on same-sex marriage is blatantly unconstitutional. Something about “denied due process.” The aforementioned AG, otherwise known as Pam “Bambi” Bondi, thinks nothing of spending a quarter of a million dollars at a crackin courtrooms across the state attempting to appeal all these cases that have not gone her way. She has yet to realize that they will never go her way, since she is clearly on the wrong side of history here. To her dismayed supporters, she is like a hamster caught on a rotating wheel, self-powered yet unable to put an end to the insanity. She claims that she’s merely doing her job, following the people’s mandate when they voted in 2008 to limit marriage to a union betm’kklm;ween a man and a woman. She, too, says she has nary a single discriminatory bone in her body. “Some of my best friends are gay,” she suggests. “I’ve even attended their parties.” We’ll need to check the security cam footage on that one. But nothing, and we do mean NOTHING, compares with the jocular debacle that occurred last week when Florida became the first state in the union to allow same-sex divorce while concurrently not allowing samesex marriage. After Circuit Judge Dale

CREATIVE DIRECTOR

filed at the beginning of the case to properly notify Pam Bondi that the case was taking place. No matter that it made national headlines across the country. Perhaps Bambi was attending too many parties for her many gay friends to notice. For whatever the reason, Judge Cohen decided to vacate his ruling and reverse his decision until such time as the corrected paperwork can filed and more of the taxpayers’ money is spent. In the course of a single month, the 17th Circuit Court of Broward went from a perfect high dive to a belly flop, and all in plain view of every other sitting judge, practicing attorney and voter. In case you’ve forgotten, Dale Cohen is the same judge who, in August 2012, was called before the Florida Supreme Court and reprimanded because he had called his own wife to testify in front of him at a 2009 hearing in a criminal case. The Supreme Court called it “official misconduct.” We call it a “laughing stock.”. . .Until next week….

Marcus Estimar, accused of Attempted Murder

According to the affidavit, Estimar punched Williams 15 to 20 times in the face and kicked him several times before he went off to meet a client for personal training. Williams has been moved into hospice care and is not expected to live much longer, at which time the charges against Estimar will allegedly be changed to second-degree murder. Estimar has an extensive criminal record, including a June 2014 Grand Theft Auto charge as well as a November 2013 charge for Unlawful Sexual Activity. His first arrest came at age 17 for illegal possession of tobacco. Though living in Fort Lauderdale at the time of his arrest, Estimar was originally from Deerfield Beach.

battery causing bodily harm or disability. He is being held in the Broward County main jail on a $255,000 bond. Estimar, who had been arrested Aug. 25 on an unrelated charge, was implicated in the attempted murder and the charges against him altered. In a Sept. 5 sworn statement, Estimar told detectives that Williams had asked him for a cigarette and after Estimar said no, Williams made sexual advances toward him, according to the affidavit. Williams then took a swing at Estimar and missed, he told detectives. That’s when, Estimar said, he “took it a little overboard.” “I literally beat the hell out of the guy,” Estimar told detectives. “I would not stop punching him. The first hit knocked him down, and I went on him.”

with Blue moving out of the house. After being taken into custody, Goodman allegedly admitted killing Blue by “hitting him in the head.” He was subsequently booked on one count of first degree murder and incarcerated in the Broward County main jail without bond. The county medical examiner indicated that Blue died from multiple injuries caused by blunt force trauma. Originally from Braddock, Pennsylvania, Blue had moved to south Florida several years ago after having met Goodman on-line. They remained a couple until several months ago. According to his friends, Blue was good-natured, and a talented singer. Blue was an only child, and his body will be returned to his mother Belinda in Braddock, a suburb of Pittsburgh, for burial. Less than a half-mile from the Flagler Drive townhouse sits Middle River Terrace Park, a popular dog walking and picnic area, at the intersection of Northeast 7th Avenue and Holly Heights Drive. It was there in the park that Fort Lauderdale police found the unconscious body of a 63-year-old man named Leon Williams, who was admitted to intensive care and placed on life support. Police allege that fitness trainer and martial arts expert Marcus Estimar, 28, was approached by Williams in the park and asked him if he had a cigarette. After Estimar said that he did not, Williams is said to have made a sexual pass at Estimar, who became enraged at the move. According to a police affidavit, Estimar has been charged with seconddegree attempted murder and aggravated

lagler Drive is one of those strange little streets in Fort Lauderdale that runs diagonally through a mostly industrial neighborhood of warehouses and storage facilities, intersecting Sunrise Boulevard just east of The Home Depot store. On Tuesday, September 9, a gay African-American man was inhumanly murdered in a townhouse on Flagler in the bedroom of his former lover. Otis Blue, an employee of TGI Fridays restaurant, failed to report to work on Tuesday and Wednesday of last week, worried co-workers notified police. When no immediate action was taken to locate Blue, 35, a call was placed by a neighbor early Thursday morning erroneously claiming to hear screaming coming from a home at 1222 North Flagler Drive. Blue had previously lived in the stonefronted townhouse at that location with his lover, 40-year-old Maurice Goodman. Arriving at the residence, police encountered Goodman’s current roommate, William Cerda, who led them upstairs to Goodman’s bedroom. Smelling a foul odor, the police demanded that Goodman open the bedroom door, and discovered the decaying body of Blue lying in a pool of blood under covers on the bed. He had apparently been dead for several days judging from the smell and condition of the dried blood on the walls and floor. According to police spokeswoman Det. Deanna Greenlaw, Blue and Goodman “were both involved in a domestic relationship.” That relationship has allegedly gone sour in the past few weeks,

TRAVEL BY RICK KARLIN

LET IT ALL HANG OUT

Y

ou don’t need to be a diehard naturist to enjoy a nude swim now and then — and luckily lots of hotels across Europe are relaxed about guests wearing their ‘birthday suits” in public areas. Many of them are gayonly hotels, guesthouses or B&Bs. Gaywelcome.com, the website of the Gay European Tourism Association (GETA), has launched a guide to 82 gay and gay friendly accommodations in Europe where those who prefer to be naked can find places in which nudity is allowed in parts or all of their premises. Cinq & Sept (7 Avenue Henri Mas, Roujan, France, 33-4-67-24-94-46) is a gay-only guesthouse in LanguedocRoussillon, in the south of France. Priced from ¤80-¤230 a night, it has five suites, an outdoor pool. Nudity is allowed in and around the pool. Finca La Maroma (Cerro Panadero 29715 Sedella, Málaga, Spain, 34-958-0690-30) is a gay-only guesthouse, in the countryside near Malaga, in southern Spain. Priced from ¤70-¤95 a night, with six suites and six rooms, it is open from March to November. Nudity is allowed throughout the property including the outdoor pool, garden and courtyard. Pride Lodge (12 High St., Blackpool, Lancashire, UK, 44-1253314752), a gay-friendly hotel in Lancashire, Northern England is priced from ¤30-¤34 a night for the two suites and six rooms. Nudity is allowed at the outdoor pool and hot tub. Kastellakia Bay Villa (Peeses, Kéa 840 02, 30-697-443-4340) is on the beach of Kea, an island off the coast of Greece. The three rooms are priced from ¤180-¤500 a night. Open from May to October, nudity is allowed throughout the property. The owner, Michael, speaks English, Spanish, Russian, French and Italian. Of course, you don’t have to go to Europe to let it all hang out. There are places closer to home that are clothing optional. Island House (1129 Fleming

Street, Key West, 800-890-6284) has an extensive sundeck on the second floor, with a misting system to ensure comfort on the sunniest days. The sundeck is clothing optional, as are all the common areas of the hotel (except the gym). The health club includes a gym and spa area with sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi. An erotic video lounge, open 24 hours a day, shows adult male videos. The resort is gay-owned and managed with an all-male staff. Perhaps the biggest draw for naturists is “Bone Island Bare It All”. Key West has been historically known as Bone Island for over two centuries, and this event gives that name a whole new meaning. Typically the long weekend event kicks off with the “PreCome Party” where it is not clothing optional, but clothing banned. Other events include; poolside and bar parties, happy hours, leather and fetish events, a masked ball (I assume the masks are on your face and not your balls) as well as events at sea (snorkeling, paddle boarding and sailing trips.) The weekend concludes with, appropriately, the “Happy Ending Party.” The schedule of events for the next installment, scheduled for Dec. 4-7, had not been finalized as of our deadline, but can be found at www.nakedkeywest.com. There are a number of clothing optional places in Palm Springs. Inndulge (601 Grenfall Rd., 800-8335675) is a resort hotel for gay men with clothing optional and nude sunbathing. Its pool and Jacuzzi are open 24 hours. Seattle Gay News commented on “the wonderful mix of guys of all types, Inndulge manages the perfect balance between flirty Gay fun and down-to-earth people.” Rooms range from $99 to $239 a night depending upon season, and the seventh night is always free. Helios (280 East Mel Ave., 760-3232868) is a little bit more than a clothing optional resort, it’s a highly sexualized spot with slings, benches, giant beds, a St. Andrew’s cross and more, where

male nudity is strongly encouraged. Rooms range from $179-$200 a night. Triangle Inn (555 East San Lorenzo Rd., 760-322-7993) offers clothing optional living among sundrenched tropical gardens, a pool, Jacuzzi and breathtaking mountain views. Rates begin at $125 per night for studio suites and go up to $499 for a four bedroom house, with fireplace, sunroom, private pool and Jacuzzi. Triangle Inn even offers marriage packages. Of course, you can tan au natural right here in Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors. A number of local hotels offer clothing optional areas and

sell day passes. Among some of the most popular are The Cabanas Guesthouse (2209 NE 26th St., Wilton Manors, 954-564-7764), Pineapple Point (315 NE 16th Terr., 954-5270094), Cheston House (520 N. Birch Road, 954-566-7950), Windamar (543 Breakers Ave. 954-561-0039), Inn Leather (610 SE 19th St., 954-4671444), Dunes Guest House (2835 Terramar, 954-568-6161) and The Grand Resort (539 North Birch Road 954-630-3000). If you prefer a more natural au natural setting, head down to Bal Harbor’s Haulover Beach (10800 Collins Ave.).

HEALTH BY TOM BONANTI

ARE YOU A GYM JERK?

Y

ou can spot one 100 feet away. It’s the guy who hoards three sets of dumbbells which he isn’t using at the moment because he is too busy texting. It’s the girl on the cardio machine who carries on a long, pointless conversation on her phone while everyone near her has to listen to her senseless yammering. How about the two body builders who are circuit training, tying up 4 or 5 stations during the most crowded time in the gym? I have a name for these self -absorbed, greedy people. I call them gym jerks. They are real nuisances and yet they abound in every commercial gym. While it may be impossible to eliminate such individuals, it might be good to check your own behavior and see if you exhibit gym jerk tendencies. Firstly, you are a gym jerk if you believe that you are the only one in the gym who matters. If you must carry around your cell phone, put it on vibrate and when you get a call, take it outside or somewhere where you don’t have to share it with the rest of us! Speaking of not sharing, keep a towel with you to wipe

down equipment after using it. No one wants to workout in a puddle of your sweat. Secondly, you are a gym jerk if you think the entire gym is your personal domain. Don’t push in front of others to get to equipment. Carelessly throwing weights around and never re-racking them after using them is crass and annoying. Don’t linger at stations while you talk on the phone or waste time. If you are circuit training and tying up several stations, at least be flexible enough to let others use a station between your sets. A simple “Excuse me…” or “Pardon me, are you using those weights?” is so much nicer than a primal grunt and a shove from behind. Recently, at the old gym a roided out gym jerk actually told me I was in his way as he pushed in front of me to snatch a dumbbell! Don’t forget basic kindness and manners. You expect them from others; why not let others learn from your example. Another sign of a gym jerk is bad personal hygiene. Primal man scent may be the rage at pig dance, but threeday body odor resembling

With a few basic rules of etiquette and a little politeness, the gym can be a great place!

poisonous mustard gas is not acceptable anywhere. If your jock or running bra can stand up on its own, then it’s time to do laundry. Yes, real men bathe, wear deodorant and wash their clothes. While I’m on this tirade about personal hygiene let me say a word to those gym jerks who insist on leaving nasty deposits and residues. Get with the human race. Learn to flush the toilet! Stop using the drinking fountain

as your personal waste receptacle! Finally, gym jerks often use the locker room and showers as their own play pens to carry on sexually with themselves and others. Stop it! Your antics are not as hot as you imagine them to be. It is illegal, and

furthermore you are setting your club and others up for all kinds of trouble. For me, and many others, the gym is a way of life. Don’t be an obnoxious gym jerk and spoil it. With a few basic rules of etiquette and a little politeness, the gym can be a great place!

elicious, healthy and bursting with flavor. This is easy and you can make a double batch and freeze some, that you can whip out when you have surprise guests. Or just for yourself. You deserve it. A nice dry pinot grigio goes down absolutely fabulous with this.

• 4 big carrots • 4 roasted red peppers • 1 big onion • Fresh rosemary or thyme • Good olive oil • Salt and pepper

Although born in Dublin, Ireland, Chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.

• Hot sauce

Roast the peppers on the barbie...(or under the broiler) the skin will go black, that’s normal.let them cool in a zip bag...they will be easier to peel. When they are cool enough to handle peel ‘em. Chop all the vegetables. Saute the onion in hot olive oil for 10 min or until golden brown, stirring often so that it doesn’t stick to the pan. Add the peppers, carrots, fresh rosemary and the water and cook for about 20 or 30 min. Fish out the rosemary stalk. Blend and season to taste. I threw in a good splash of hot sauce. You are a chef!

DINING BY RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN

KALUZ RESTAURANT

O

ne of the many advantages of our new corporate offices in the penthouse of a financial center on Commercial Blvd. is that we are surrounded by a bevy of restaurants—most of which we never had the opportunity to try since they are a little distant from our former Wilton Manors headquarters. Case in point is the beautiful Kaluz Restaurant on the Intercoastal at 3300 E Commercial Blvd. Contemporary, chic and a restaurant designer’s dream. Multimedia Platforms LLC founder Bobby Blair is a true Caesar Salad aficionado, having long ago declared that the one served at J. Alexander’s is the best in the city. After last week’s return engagement to try Kaluz’ Traditional Caesar Salad ($9.00) with Grilled Chicken (add $5.00), Blair has declared it an official toss-up. Request the salad with extra dressing and shaved Parmigiano Reggiano, and have it tossed well for the best results. Another salad success story is the Bistro Salad ($16.00), a large and elaborate affair that combines romaine lettuce with almonds and dates, some crumbled Feta cheese, tomato, corn, avocado and grilled chicken breast with housemade cornbread crotons. As flavorful as it is filling. We know many gourmands that just a restaurant by its calamari, and they should not pass by the creatively prepared Sweet Ginger Calamari ($13.00). As presented, it’s a heapy plateful of medium-thick calamari rings and tentacles, breaded and fried with a chili-ginger beer glaze, with an accompanying garlic aioli. Burgers at Kaluz are a bit on the pricey side, but absolutely worth every penny if, once again, you know the correct way to order your selection. The kitchen at Kaluz uniformly overcooks most of its entrees—hamburgers included. So if you like your meat prepared medium, always order it medium rare and you’ll be served perfection on a plate.

Of the group, our favorite was the Classic Cheeseburger ($14.00), again with a few adjustments. The 8-ounce Angus patty comes with Wisconsin Yellow Cheddar which we dropped in favor of Bleu Cheese. The choice is topped off with lettuce, beefsteak tomato, red onion and a pickle, all encased in a housemade Challah roll. Even more unusual to find on a restaurant menu: Colorado Lamb Burger ($16.00). Imagine if you can, a lamb patty topped with goat cheese, Arugula, caramelized onions and smeared with sun-dried tomato aioli. You’ll want to say “yum,” but you’re mouth will be full. At $24.00, the Maple Leaf Duck Confit is a wonderful treat you can give yourself. Duck is one of the dishes that you cannot rush, so prepare to wait a few minutes for this thigh-andleg combo that comes glazed with a plum-orange sauce that brings out the succulent flavor of the waterfowl. It’s perfectly complimented with a chilled quinoa medley. If you are in the mood for fish, you’ll be hard-pressed to do better than either the Salmon ($25.00) or the Scallops ($31.00) Choose the former and prepare for a thick salmon steak roasted on a cedar plank and topped with a spicy brown sugar mustard glaze that manages to impress without overwhelming. The pan-seared scallops are beautifully highlighted by a pomegranate reduction sauce, topped with a mango compote and served with a chilled quinoa medley. In our word to the wise division: skip the Kaluz Danish Ribs ($25.00)—wa-ay too overcooked and dry; and the Hatfield Farm Pork Chops ($26.00)—same complaint. For romantics, Kaluz restaurant sit right on the Intercoastal and has a selection of outside tables and a lounge area that are perfect for balmy summer-into-fall dinners and hand-holding. Indulge yourself freely and don’t forget to tell them the Agenda sent you.

“My Old Lady” which opens September 19th at the Gateway Cinema in Fort Lauderdale. COURTESY OF HBO

n “My Old Lady” (Cohen Media Group), 58 year old, thrice-divorced, recovering addict Matthias aka Jim (Kevin Kline) spends his last cent to get to Paris under the mistaken impression that he has inherited an apartment, with a garden, in the Marais from his late father. His plan to sell the flat at a considerable profit and get back on his feet goes up in smoke when he meets 92 year old Mathilde (Maggie Smith), who resides in the apartment with her unmarried daughter Chloe (Kristin Scott Thomas). It appears that Matthias’s philandering father, who bought the unit 43 years earlier, did it through a distinctly French system for buying and selling apartments.

In other words, as retired English teacher (who can’t stop correcting people) Mathilde, who has no interest in subtlety, informs Matthias, what he has inherited is a 2400 Euro a month debt. All of this sounds like a relatively theatrical comedic setup (the film was originally a stage play). There are some borderline farcical moments early on, but as the story develops, the characters’ cruelty to each other is pure theatrical tragedy. With so much at stake, things descend into darkness quickly. Trapped in a hopeless situation, Matthias begins peeling back the layers to reveal its dark underbelly. Mathilde carried on a lengthy extramarital affair with Matthias’ father. Chloe, like mother like daughter, is having an affair with a married man. Matthias falls hard off the

wagon, making his life and the lives of those around him, a misery. When Matthias say he was “born with a silver knife” in his back, you know he’s not fooling. In addition to infidelity, suicide features prominently, and there is more than a hint of incest in the story, written and directed by playwright Israel Horovitz (father of Beastie Boy Adam Horovitz). Smith is as riveting as ever, but it’s hard to buy Thomas as dowdy. As for Kline, he’s a good actor, but not talented enough to pull off 58 at 67. [In theaters on Sept. 19.]

P

hotographer and documentarian Timothy Greenfield-Sanders’ (“The Out List”) American Masters doc “The Boomer List,” premiering

September 23, 2014 at 9 p.m. ET on PBS, features 19 interview subjects, each representing a Baby Boom year between 1946 and 1964. Some interviewees are more immediately recognizable than others, including Samuel L. Jackson, Billy Joel, Maria Shriver and Kim Cattrall, and some are better-spoken than others. The cross-section of “Boomers” features authors (Tim O’Brien, Amy Tan), performers (John Leguizamo), entrepreneurs and business people (Steve Wozniak, Virginia Rometty), groundbreaking women (Johnson Space Center director Ellen Ochoa, The HistoryMakers founder Julieanna Richardson) and a generous selection of LGBT folks (Rosie O’Donnell, photographer David LaChappelle and AIDS activist Peter Staley), among others.

“D

avid Bowie is” (Done and Dusted) is less a documentary than it is a big screen “ultimate tour” through the acclaimed and extensive David Bowie is… exhibition at London’s V&A (Victoria & Albert Museum of Art & Design), guided by curators Vicky Broakes and Geoffrey Marsh. A “celebration of cultural icon” Bowie, the popular exhibition ran for five months and featured a treasure

September 17, 2014 29

trove of personal artifacts. Beginning with Bowie’s 1947 birth, as David Jones (don’t miss the baby pics!), in post-war Britain into his formative years (in which Little Richard played a major role). An “instigator of new ideas” and proponent of long hair on men, Bowie began by expressing himself visually through sketches. Perhaps his first major bit of self-expression began when he changed his name to David Bowie in 1965. Most adored for his music, the film (and exhibition) traces that aspect from Bowie’s 1967 debut album (released, unfortunately for him, on the same day as the Beatle’s Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band) through his transition to mainstream pop star. As any thorough exhibition would do, it displays Bowie’s influences (Lindsay Kemp), exploration of forms of expression (mime and androgyny), personae (Ziggy Stardust, The Thin White Duke), sexuality (coming out as gay in 1972 with a wife and child), and his farreaching influence on the culture at large, all the while finding the threads that run through and connect his work. Naturally, considerable attention is paid to Bowie’s impact on fashion, video and film. Interview subjects and guest speakers in the film include writer Hanif Kureishi, musician Jarvis Cocker, designer Kansai Yamamoto, photographer Terry O’Neil, artist Jeremy Deller and choreographer Michael Clark, to name a few. The inclusion of comments from people attending the exhibition is also enlightening. More than anything else, “David Bowie is” succeeds in whetting our appetites for the international tour of the exhibit, which makes its only stateside appearance at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago through January 4, 2015. [“David Bowie is” screens at Sun-Ray Cinema, 1028 Park in Jacksonville; Tower, 1508 SW 8th St. in Miami; and O Cinema, 90 NW 29th St. in Miami.]

floridaagenda.com

Greenfield-Sanders also included black and white portraits of others born in the same year as the designated interview subjects. However, if you’re a stickler for chronology, you’d be wise to sit this one out or take a Xanax.
