NATION Poll: Support for Gay Marriage Drops WASHINGTON, DC--A survey released Monday from the DC-based Pew Research Center indicates American support for same-sex marriage could be leveling off slightly after several years of dramatic growth in acceptance of equal rights for gays and lesbians. According to the poll, 49% of Americans are in favor of allowing same-sex marriage and 41% opposed – a 5-point dip in support from a February Pew Research poll, but about the same level as in 2013. The Pew Research Center cautions that it is too early to know if this modest decline is an anomaly or the beginning of a reversal or leveling off in attitudes toward gay marriage after years of steadily increasing public acceptance. Moreover, when the February poll and the current survey are combined, the 2014 yearly average level of support for same-sex marriage stands at 52%, roughly the same as the 2013 yearly average (50%). The poll of 2,002 adults, conducted Sept. 2-9, has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points. “Since we’ve seen this upward trend for so long, we’re cautious because it’s too early to say what this means for long-term trends,” said Jessica Martinez, a researcher in Pew’s Religion and Public Life Project. “As we continue to ask this question in other surveys, we’ll keep an eye on where this moves,” she told the Associated Press. The new poll also finds that fully half (50%) of the public now considers homosexuality a sin, up from 45% a year ago. And nearly half of U.S. adults think that businesses like caterers and florists should be allowed to reject same-sex couples as customers if the businesses have religious objections to serving those couples. The poll of created to uncover what Americans thought about the waning influence of religion in public life. Nearly three-quarters of the public (72%) now thinks religion is losing

influence in American life, up 5 percentage points from 2010 to the highest level in Pew Research polling over the past decade. And most people who say religion’s influence is waning see this as a bad thing. Perhaps as a consequence, a growing share of the American public wants religion to play a role in U.S. politics. The share of Americans who say churches and other houses of worship should express their views on social and political issues is up 6 points since the 2010 midterm elections (from 43% to 49%). The share who say there has been “too little” expression of religious faith and prayer from political leaders is up modestly over the same period (from 37% to 41%). And a growing minority of Americans (32%) think churches should endorse candidates for political office, though most continue to oppose such direct involvement by churches in electoral politics. Analysis also shows that growing support for religion in politics is concentrated among those who think religion has a positive impact on society. And the desire for religion in public life is much more evident among Republicans and those who lean toward the GOP than among Democrats and Democratic leaners.

Catholic Church to Couple: Divorce or Stay Away LEWISTOWN, MT-- Paul Huff and Tom Wojtowick has been in love for over 30 years, and since 2003 they have been active members of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. Woitowick, 66, had served as the church’s organist for a time, while both Woitowick and Huff, 73, have sung in the choir. Not anymore. The pair were legally married in Seattle last year, and have both been lifelong practicing Catholics. Despite their regularly attendance at St. Leo’s, they were told that they could no long be volunteers at the church, or receive communion, unless they were will to get a legal divorce and stop living together.

The pair heard the surprising news when they returned from an out-oftown trip. They were approached by both the church’s new priest, Rev. Samuel Spiering, and Bishop Michael Warfel, leader of the Catholic Diocese of Great Falls–Billings. The gay couple are extremely popular and well known among the parishioners, 300 of whom met with Warfel last Saturday about the matter. “The comments from the parishioners were probably 50-50,” Warfel told the Great Falls Tribune. “In balance, those were both supportive of what the pastor had done in his decision, and then some who were very angry and nonsupportive of that decision.” No changes have come about yet as a result of the meeting, and Warfel told the Tribune he plans to ponder the issue. According to the bishop, this is not a case of discrimination against gays. “This is not animus against someone who happens to be a homosexual; this issue is the same-sex marriage,” he told the Gazette last week. “A lot of people put those two together, and obviously there’s a connection, but it’s not the same thing.” “As a Catholic bishop I have a responsibility to uphold our teaching of marriage between one man and one woman,” Warfel added. “And I think there’s very solid scriptural teaching on it and our sacred tradition is very strong on it. … Either I uphold what Catholic teachings are or, by ignoring it or permitting it, I’m saying I disagree with what I’m ordained to uphold.”

Del Shores to Develop “A Very Sordid Wedding” LOS ANGELES, CA--Award-winning writer, director, producer Del Shores (Southern Baptist Sissies, “Queer As Folk”, Blues For Willadean) has announced that his next feature film project will be A Very Sordid Wedding, a sequel to his 2001 gay cult classic film Sordid Lives. Bonnie Bedelia (“Parenthood”), Leslie Jordan (“Will & Grace”, “American Horror Story: Coven”) and

Caroline Rhea (“Sabrina The Teenage Witch”) are attached to reprise their roles. Shores’ Beard Collins Shores Productions has launched an Indiegogo fundraising campaign to assemble the project and secure investor financing. The campaign is now live at: http:// igg.me/at/averysordidwedding In 2000, Sordid Lives stormed the film festival circuit winning multiple Best Feature awards, Best Soundtrack, Best Actor and 13 Audience Awards. In 2001, the film opened to mixed reviews, but word-of-mouth drove audiences to the film and it ran for over a year in theaters in Ft. Lauderdale, Provincetown and Dallas and still holds the record for the longest running film in Palm Springs with 96 weeks at the Camelot Theatres. The film was released on DVD in 2003, selling over 300,000 units worldwide and has just been re-released by Wolfe Video as a DVD/Blu-ray combo pack with new cast interviews. The oft-quoted Sordid Lives has become a staple in gay culture at video bars and the now iconic characters are perennial favorites for Halloween costumes. A Very Sordid Wedding picks up sixteen years after the events of the first film. As the original film explored the journey of coming out in a small, conservative Texas town, the sequel dives into the impact of the advancement of same-sex marriage into that same community of now beloved characters. Shores has said, “Through the years, I have been overwhelmed by the number of people who have shared how much they relate to my Sordid Lives family, and how many gay men and women used it to come out to their conservative families through the humor of the film. I never felt, like much of the Sordid Lives fan base, that I was done with the denizens of Winters, Texas. I’m excited for this next chapter exploring the advancement of equality to finish the story of these characters that so many people have grown to love. The fans have begged and pleaded for it, and we are co-dependent people pleasers. So here we go.”

Latest Marijuana Poll Suggests Victory for Amendment 2

exchange of information on treatment alternatives and that discussion of these alternatives between physicians and patients should not subject either party to criminal sanctions.” Chief among those who are against passing the amendment is the Florida Medical Association, which claims that it is troubled by the possibility of “unintended consequences,” “public health risks” and concerns about training of health care professionals. Under the terms of the amendment, these issues would be addressed by the Florida Department of Health, the agency that would be in charge of writing the regulations for the implementation of Amendment 2 if it were to pass. Studies show that many patients suffering with HIV/AIDS, glaucoma, cancer and chemotherapy, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, and other debilitating illnesses find that marijuana provides relief from their symptoms.

CORAL GABLES— With slightly more than a month remaining until the Florida General Election on November 4, public support of Amendment 2, which makes the use of medical marijuana legal, is holding steady at 69 percent of likely Florida voters. According to the latest poll numbers released by United for Care (unitedforcare.org), 28 percent of likely voters are opposed, with three percent undecided. 60% voter approval is needed to pass a Constitutional Amendment in the State of Florida. The findings are significant because they show voter backing of the amendment has remained virtually unchanged since the beginning of 2013. Previous polls (conducted by 3 different pollsters) showed support at 70% in January, 71% in March, and 70% in June. Currently, 23 states and the District of Columbia currently provide legal access and protection under state law for seriously ill patients whose doctors recommend the medical use of marijuana. Generally, these laws are working well and providing patients with relief and protection from arrest. Since 1996, when the first effective medical marijuana law passed, data have shown that concerns about these laws increasing youth marijuana use are unfounded: Of the 15 states with available before-and-after data, none have reported statistically significant increases in teen marijuana use. In

fact, 11 have reported decreases. Ironically, while mid-term general elections attract a traditionally poor voter turnout, the medical marijuana initiative is expected to bring a number of otherwise reluctant voters to the polls—particularly Democrats—a fact that may help Democratic gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist. The medical legalization of marijuana has been supported by American College of Physicians, Institute of Medicine, American Public Health Association, American Nurses Association, American Academy of HIV Medicine, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Lymphoma Foundation of American, American Medical Student Association, and the state medical societies of New York, Rhode Island, and California. The American Medical Association believes that “effective patient care requires the free and unfettered

cott Herman is a disabled war veteran, a charismatic speaker and the Democratic candidate for Congressman for the 93rd District, which runs from the beach in Fort Lauderdale to NE 4Ave. in Wilton Manors, down to Port Everglades on the south and the Palm Beach County border on the north. The one-time Republican, Herman switched to the Democratic Party when he discovered that his former party affiliation was becoming less flexible in its acceptance of those with disabilities and same-sex relationships—two subjects that Herman knows well. “My spouse (Cale Choi, 31) became the first same-sex recipient of a spouse military ID card,” Herman told the Agenda. “It was issued at the Key West Naval base, and took eight or nine months of overcoming roadblocks including document appeals, and Inspector General complaints against the US Attorney General and the Secretary of the Veterans Administration, to force the government to award educational and health care benefits to my husband.” Choi, the son of a prominent South Korean businessman, with companies in Asia, Canada, and the United Kingdom, was married to Herman in July 2013 when the pair eloped to Canada. Talk about marrying well. Choi brought $14 million stashed in nine banks across the world to the union, 30 real estate investment properties in Broward County that pump $1.4 million into the couple’s bank accounts each year (not a bad return on property worth $19.1 million), and another $10 million or so in stocks and bonds. secret. Herman reported the income on his financial disclosure statement. “We’ve combined assets. I believe in ethics, I believe in the spirit of the financial disclosure law, and I will not ignore my spouse on paperwork.” Apparently not. “My opponent for the Congressional seat, George Moraitis, is linked completely and admittedly to incumbent governor Rick Scott who favors special interests and big business over the very real individual needs of our population,” Herman said. “The current administration cut $1.3 billion in education dollars, while claiming to be for education. I find this extremely concerning both as a politician and as a veteran. “We have to have education in order to bring in jobs. We need people to be healthy to be productive at work and to have a quality of life. Yet, we find it extremely interesting that both my

opponent and Rick Scott are against funding education and are against the Affordable Care Act.” Herman is well placed to represent the high percentage of seniors in District 93 as well as the large LGBT population that live in the Wilton Manors/ Fort Lauderdale region. “Regardless of the outcome of this election, I will never stop fighting for the equal rights of gays and those on fixed incomes. That obviously includes veterans, many of who are disabled and at the mercy of the Veterans Administration health system,” which Harman says has improved since the recent Congressional inquiry into its operations revealed low quality of care and long wait times for treatment. “Things are improving,” Herman says, pointing to PACT (Patient Aligned Care Team). “PACT has been in place since late 2010 and deals with everything from homeless vets to basic health care needs. It is an essential part of every veteran’s package of benefits.” Yet, Herman has found that local administrations in the cities of Tamarac and Sunrise refuse to install as simple an accommodation as a crosswalk to allow veterans who take the bus to walk safely across six-lanes of traffic to reach the VA Clinic on Commercial Blvd. “They tell me it’s a matter of ‘volume,’” Herman said. “I didn’t know you needed a ‘volume’ of disabled vets to get a crosswalk put up and stop traffic. We need to put common sense back in government.” The Agenda endorses Scott Herman. More information can be found at www. electscottherman.com….Until next week…..

Mick Jones’ British-American rock band Foreigner is one of the world’s all time best selling acts. They have had worldwide sales of over 80 million, with 37.5 million in the United States alone. Their biggest hit, “I Want To Know What Love Is” topped both the UK and US charts. Although they have been replacing band members since the 1970s, their ability to sell out arenas hasn’t declined. There had been much discussion of a band member reunion for the original members, but, unfortunately, the recent death of bassist Ed Gagliardi stopped those plans. The current members include Mick Jones, Kelly Hansen, Jeff Pilson, Tom Gimbel, Michael Bluestein, and Chris Frazier. 8:00 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 5747 Seminole Way. Hollywood. 33314.

Boarding begins at 6:30 p.m. and sails around the Intercostal until 10:00 p.m. Entertainment includes host Kitty Meow, performer Deja Devonier, and DJ Greyson Jubilee. Also appearing are dancers from Johnny’s and Boardwalk. 6:30 p.m. Smoker’s Park. 540 S.E. 5th Ave. Fort Lauderdale. 33301.

HEALTH BY PETER JACKSON, CPT

ASK THE FITNESS MAN THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING (LIKE) DAVID I distinctly remember my first conversation with David Langley. He sat across from me in the gym consultation room and told me quite matter-of-factly, “I don’t want to be here and I don’t want to exercise, but my doctor says I have to.” David, who had just turned the corner on another milestone birthday, was on a host of medications for all sorts of health issues including cholesterol, diabetes and hypertension. His Body Mass Index and body fat were extremely high. He was eating poorly. He was, I thought to myself, a ticking time bomb. David was not unlike millions of Americans who are caught up in the rat race of life and can’t seem to find the time or the motivation to engage in a regular exercise program. The same goes for following a healthy diet. Many want to be fit and trim but can’t seem to get started. Breakfast for most people is often inadequate or skipped altogether, lunch is on the go and dinner, more often than not, is eaten too

late at night and laden with carbohydrates. The result has earned us the distinction of being the most overweight nation on earth with two-thirds of Americans officially overweight or obese. Here’s the truth. Adopting a healthy lifestyle – one that includes exercise three or more hours per week and following a (mostly) healthy diet – isn’t easy. BUT… it’s easier than most people THINK it is. The human body is an amazing machine and responds quickly when given exactly the right

nutrients and training. But for David and other men and women aged 40-plus, the importance of getting regular cardiovascular exercise and strength training to build muscle isn’t as much about looking fit and healthy as it is about BEING healthy enough to enjoy our 60s, 70s and golden years. Muscle loss due to aging (a condition called sarcopenia) generally starts at age 40 and accelerates during our 50s. Without strength training to re-build muscle, there’s

TIP OF THE WEEK: Make a pledge to yourself to become more active! Start with simple things like parking farthest from the mall entrance, taking the stairs instead of the elevator and opting to take a long walk with the dog instead of vegetating in front of the television. Build on that momentum by planning activities outside of the gym… swimming, walking, cycling, running, kayaking… the more active you are, the more calories you burn.

eventually an ongoing deficit of muscle mass leading to instability and frailty – and, invariably, illness. Keep in mind that one pound of muscle burns 30-50 calories per day (one pound of fat only burns about 9 calories per day), so as muscle mass declines, weight gain often increases. But let’s get back to David. He very reluctantly began a supervised fitness program 3-4 times a week. He supplemented with whey protein and other micronutrients as directed and began following a healthy meal plan. At first, he clearly dreaded every moment he spent with his trainer. But as time marched on and his body began to transform, David became increasingly enthusiastic about his workouts

and embraced his new-found healthy lifestyle. Today, he bounces into the gym four times a week in his slim, trim, sexy 63-year-old body, flexing muscular arms most guys would love to have. In less than a year, David dropped about 30 pounds and gained about 15 pounds of lean muscle. His energy level has gone through the roof and he doesn’t look anywhere near his age! Most significantly, he no longer needs prescription medication for diabetes, hypertension or high cholesterol. He’s completely off those medications! David exemplifies the power each of us has to change our bodies and influence our lives and health. We need more Davids to show us the way.

“The Skeleton Twins”

September 24, 2014

28

“T

he Skeleton Twins,” the perfect comic companion piece to “Obvious Child,” released earlier this year, is a pitch black comedy about suicide, secrets, bad mothers, alcoholism, strained sibling relationships, marital infidelity, pedophilia, inappropriate behavior, lip synching and Halloween. What saves it from being a total downer is the brilliantly funny writing by Mark Heyman (“Black Swan”) and director Craig Johnson, as well as the extraordinary performances by lead actors (and former SNL cohorts) Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig. Siblings Milo (Hader), an actor/waiter, and dental hygienist Maggie (Wiig), known as the “gruesome twosome,” are reunited after 10 years following Milo’s failed suicide attempt in Los Angeles. Returning to their Nyack, New York hometown, where Maggie lives with sexy but slow husband Lance (Luke Wilson), the sibs attempt to repair their broken brother and sisterhood. Gay Milo is depressed but hasn’t lost his alternately silly and snarky edge. Milo’s presence seems to spark something in Maggie, who has been leading

Lance to believe she is participating in their attempts to get pregnant, while secretly taking birth control pills. Also unbeknownst to poor Lance, Maggie struggles with monogamy issues. Meanwhile, Milo takes the hometown return opportunity to attempt to reconnect with an old lover. The emphasis is on old because, as a 15 year old high school student, Milo became involved with his older English teacher Rich (Ty Burrell). The affair cost Rich his job (he now runs a bookstore) and played a part in Milo’s ongoing downward spiral. If it all sounds kind of bleak, it is. However, there are more than enough comedic situations, including a visit from their woo-woo and itinerant mother Judy (Joanna Gleason), a nitrous oxide episode at Judy’s office, and a choreographed bit to Starship’s “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now,” that effectively balance the looming darkness. Wiig’s performance shows depth and dimension, but it’s Hader who has the (skeleton) keys to the kingdom. Milo is much more than just Hader expanding on his beloved Stefon character from SNL. Hader completely fleshes out Milo, making him familiar, funny, fresh and unforgettable.

T

hanks to cable food channels and the various and sundry cooking shows and competitions that are broadcast, kitchen culture is more popular than ever. The hunger for food in films, including dramas, comedies and documentaries, pre-dates the current epicurean enthusiasm (see “Babette’s Feast” and “Like Water For Chocolate”). Nevertheless, the cravings continue, and 2014 has served up two more appetizing cinematic courses, “The 100 Foot Journey” (still in theaters) and “Chef” (Universal), now available on Blu-ray+DVD+Digital HD. Writer/director/actor Jon Favreau plays Carl, the titular character in “Chef.” He’s a brash, obsessive, kitchen commando with a staff, including Martin (John Leguizamo), Tony (Bobby Canavale) and Molly (Scarlett Johansson), that respects (make that worships) him, and a tyrannical boss, Riva (Dustin Hoffman), with a Napoleon complex. Things reach a boiling point following a negative review from powerful and feared restaurant critic Michel (Oliver Platt), leading to a showdown between Carl and Riva. Carl walks.

Adding coarse sea salt to the wound is his divorce from the glamorous and successful Inez (Sofia Vergara), mother of his devoted but neglected son Percy (Emjay Anthony). Inez wants nothing more than for Carl to succeed, even going so far as to connect him with her zany publicist Jen (a wickedly wacky Amy Sedaris). But Carl, who wants to succeed on his own, eventually succumbs to Inez’s charms, accompanies her and Percy back to Miami, where she is from and where Carl got his start. A meeting with Inez’s first ex-husband Marvin (Robert Downey, Jr.) leads to a new venture in the exciting world of food trucks. “Chef” puts a lot on the menu, including the good and bad power of social media (see the escalation of a Twitter war of words), father and son relationships, road trips, unfinished relationship business, food as a means of creative and personal expression, and the desire to succeed. As with “The 100 Foot Journey,” it’s best to see “Chef” on a full-stomach. Also, vegetarians and vegans should be warned that meat, raw and cooked, plays a prominent role here. Blu-ray/DVD bonus features include deleted scenes and commentary by Favreau and co-producer Roy Choi.
