Baptists Gives the Boot to CA Church

other churches the SBC has broken ties with for taking a more inclusive approach to homosexuality, such as Broadway Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas which was expelled in 2009 for “allowing members who are openly homosexual and unrepentant.” The expulsion of New Heart, however, comes at a time when the SBC is actively wrestling with LGBT issues: this year several prominent SBC leaders urged the church to soften its approach on homosexuality, and the SBC’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission is scheduled to meet next month to discuss “the Gospel, homosexuality, and the future of marriage.”

Pennsylvania State Senator Comes Out

A recent anti-gay beating in Philadelphia has prompted Pennsylvania lawmakers to take a new look at passing hate crime laws that include penalties when criminals target individuals’ sexual orientation and gender identity. During a press conference Tuesday advocating for the provisions, outgoing State Sen. Jim Ferlo (D) came out as gay. Ferlo asked to make a personal comment and proceeded to announce, “I have been a practicing homosexual and I am gay since at least the age of 24 or 25. I didn’t need a psychiatrist or psychologist; I just decided this was something that was normal for me — comfortable.” He apologized for stating this publicly “so late in life,” but he acknowledged that he was doing so now because “many people do not report hate crimes because of the fear of being out and about.” “I’m gay. Get over it. It’s a great life,” he said. “I think the more that people learn and respect and experience diversity, I think the better off we are as a society. And I think we need to be nurturing and provide opportunities for young people to be culturally accepting of their feelings and for everybody to feel a major part — an integral part — of the human family.” By coming out, Ferlo became the third openly gay lawmaker in Pennsylvania’s legislature, alongside Reps. Mike Fleck (R) and Brian Sims (D).

The Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), the nation’s largest protestant denomination, has kicked out a California church whose pastor embraces homosexuality, claiming that the minister and the church are not in “cooperation” with the SBC’s stance on LGBT issues. On Tuesday, the SBC’s highest committee voted unanimously to “disfellowship” — or effectively break ties with — New Heart Community Church in La Mirada, California because it voted in May to become a “third way” church, or a congregation where members “agree to disagree” about homosexuality and not cast judgment on one another. The committee held that the church “does not presently meet the definition of a cooperating church” under the SBC’s constitution, which outlaws congregations that “act to affirm, approve or endorse homosexual behavior.” “[New Heart has] walked away from us as Southern Baptists,” Ronnie Floyd, SBC President and pastor of Cross Church in northwest Arkansas, told the Baptist Press. “We have not walked away from them. So it is with compassion that I would appeal to them to reconsider their decision, mostly their position related to the Word of God on homosexuality.” Controversy first sparked at New Heart earlier this year when its pastor, Danny Cortez, announced to his congregation that he no longer believed that homosexuality is a sin. In a sermon entitled “Why I Changed My Mind on Homosexuality,” he explained that he shifted away from his anti-gay stance after years of prayer and theo-

logical reflection, and that his position was reaffirmed when his son came out to him as gay last year. “My heart skipped a beat and I turned towards [my son] and we gave one another the biggest and longest hug as we cried,” Cortez said, recounting the experience of his son coming out. “And all I could tell him was that I loved him so much and that I accepted him just as he is … If it wasn’t for this 15 year journey and my change in theology, I may have destroyed my son through reparative therapy.” After Cortez’s sermon, members of New Heart had the option to simply remove him from the pulpit. Instead, the congregation voted to keep him as their pastor and embrace a live-andlet-live approach “in the same way that our church holds different positions on the issue of divorce and remarriage.” The church’s decision, which came weeks before the SBC’s annual meeting in Baltimore, Maryland, triggered a number of heated responses from prominent baptists such as Albert Mohler, the influential president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Mohler published a blog post in June blasting the church’s position and condemning homosexuality. “There is no third way on this issue,” Mohler wrote. “A congregation will teach a biblical position on the sinfulness of same-sex acts, or it will affirm same-sex behaviors as morally acceptable. Ministers will perform same-sex ceremonies, or they will not.” Nevertheless, the church has stood firm in its decision to embrace a diversity of opinions. Deacons from New Heart submitted a letter to the committee ahead of Tuesday’s vote explaining that their congregation holds a multiplicity of positions, but also acknowledging their pastor’s firmly pro-LGBT stance. “Some ‘members in our church’ believe that same-sex marriage can be blessed by God, while other members in our church believe that marriage is reserved for one man and one woman,” the letter read, according to the Baptist Press. “While ‘our church’ remains without an official stance on same-sex marriage, our preaching pastor has officiated a same-sex marriage.” New Heart now joins the ranks of

When the Supreme Court of the United States comes back into session next Monday, it is highly likely that the high court will decide the fate of same-sex marriage. There have been more than 80 lawsuits filed in the past 12 months, many finding voice after the Supreme Court struck down a portion of the Defense of Marriage Act in the Edie Windsor case. This groundswell of activity, however, is being held hostage by the lack of a nationally binding decision by the high court. According to Miranda Leitsinger of NBC News, “The justices, who will meet in a closed-door conference on Monday, will consider whether to hear any of three same-sex marriage lawsuits during the next term, which officially starts Oct. 6. If they decide to review one or more of the cases, a ruling could be reached by July on whether same-sex marriage must be allowed nationwide. If they choose not to hear the cases, the decision would allow gay nuptials in the ten states covered by the three lawsuits. The court could also wait for a circuit court to disagree with the others and support the state bans. The justice have until January 2015 to make their decision.” Leitsinger quoted Austin Nimocks, senior counsel at Alliance Defending Freedom. “Litigators on both sides of this issue have known from the beginning and understood that this is headed back to the Supreme Court. We’re now approaching the ultimate theater where everybody expects this to be ultimately decided, at least from a judicial standpoint.” “Given the huge flood of cases coming up through the lower courts, they can’t responsibly decline to hear this,” Andrew Koppelman, a professor of law and political science at Northwestern University and author of “Same Sex, Different States: When Same-Sex Marriages Cross State Lines.” told Leitsinger. “Because of the unprecedented speed at which the courts are almost unanimously striking down these laws, I think we are at a watershed moment

in American history and everybody anticipates that this will be resolved by the Supreme Court,” noted Paul Castillo, counsel for Lambda Legal in the Indiana and Virginia marriage cases, according to Leitsinger. “I think what the Supreme Court is looking for is a case that presents the issue so that they would be able to get straight to the heart of the matter,” Castillo said.”

Dear Editor: As a lifelong Democrat — until recently — as well as a devoted 30-year-member of the teachers’ union, I have to dispute Richard Hack’s portrayal of Florida as the nation’s “laughing stock”. Hack justifies his contrived and border-line hysterical condemnation because Attorney General Pam Bondi is defending the Florida state ban on gay marriage. What the myopic Hack does not understand is that the AG is sworn to defend the Florida State Constitution, even if she does not personally want to. Bondi is simply doing this because 60 percent of Floridians voted for the constitutional ban, which includes very large numbers of Independents, as well as the majority of Black and Hispanic Democrats, who, incidentally, vote against Gay marriage more than whites. The so-called “Rick Scott Democrat” is impressed by Pam Bondi’s concern with upholding the voters decision to ban same-sex marriage. But he might want to explain why Pam Bondi seemed to have no such concern when Gov. Rick Scott decided to overrule the voters when he intervened in the implementation of the two Constitutional Amendments that the voters overwhelmingly passed to ban gerrymandering in the State of Florida. In other words, if the governor decides to overrule the voters, it’s OK with Pam Bondi. But if the courts decide to overrule the voters, she thinks they don’t have the right. That’s a very odd position for an attorney general to take– and an extremely dangerous one. Respectfully, George Dauphin Broward County

The State of the GOP in Florida

I

October 1, 2014

have written in this space about my dislike for Florida Governor Rick Scott’s seeming inability to answer a direct question on the subject of same-sex marriage, and the waste of hundreds of thousands of taxpayers dollars through the court antics of state attorney general Pam Bondi in defense of the 2008 voter’s Amendment 2. In the process, I have been judged a Democrat on a vindictive political mission. Such is not the case—for I am neither. As we approach the Nov. 4 mid-term elections, with its assortment of new ballot amendments, it is important to consider all aspects of the voting process, including the credentials of those seeking re-election. To that end, we offered this editorial column to Matt Chen of the Broward Republican Executive Committee to provide his spin on the GOP’s strengths and candidates. While many Democrats will likely dismiss the content that follows as ideology over logic, we agree with Mr. Chen’s view that much in Florida is moving in the correct direction. While Mr. Chen would have us believe that this progress is do to the diligence of our governor over the past four years, he fails to address the general growth and turn-around experienced by the country as a whole. Nevertheless, following is his take on the state of the GOP Party in Florida. We welcome responsible discussion on the topic. Let’s have a reality break about both the GOP and Rick Scott. Ronald Reagan garnered 40+ percent of the GLBT vote in his two landslides. So did George H. W. Bush. In 1994, the Gingrich Revolution that captured a GOP Senate, House and 32 GOP Governorships netted 42% of the GLBT vote, according to the New York Times. And recent exit polling since 2000 suggests there are over a million American Gays who almost routinely vote Republican. The Broward Republican Party is an example of how most metropolitan GOP’s have become much more open to Gays in their ranks. During this young century, the Lauderdale Beach Republican Club, the Broward Republican Women’s Club, and the Broward Young Republicans have elected openly-partnered Gays as their Club Presidents. In 2012, Gay blogger and Young Republican President, Nicholas Stone, was presented with the “Young Republican Volunteer of the Year Award” at the prestigious Broward Lincoln Day Dinner. Last month, Mimi Planas, President of the Log Cabin Republicans Miami Chapter, received the “2014 Most Active GOP Club President Award”, after spectacularly organizing a large public policy summit with Governor Scott’s Office.

She has also garnered regular coverage from the Miami Herald, South Florida’s Gay newspapers, and the Pink News of London — “the largest GLBT paper in Europe” for endorsing Governor Rick Scott. Ms. Planas says Scott has brought many corporations to Florida and created 640,000 new jobs, resulting in one of the very highest drops in state unemployment in the entire country. As for gay marriage, gays won--period. It was the Log Cabin Republicans who won the case in California that was later affirmed by the US Supreme Court. Pam Bondi’s appeal is purely a function of her Oath of Office, but the appeal will be declared unconstitutional and echo the USSC decision. Bondi should be judged by Gays for

her nationally recognized leadership in obliterating Florida’s pill mills; and putting the big heat on human traffickers. Our state’s once horrific crime rate is at a 40 year low. Let me close, folks, by saying a Florida university study following the 2010 mid-term elections determined Republicans narrowly carried the South Florida GLBT vote. If Republican Rick Scott does not win the majority of Gay voters again, he will likely get somewhere near his impressive 2010 Florida gay vote and be reelected, much to the predictable, albeit anguished astonishment of the Gay media and the Dolphin Democrats. Matt Chen Broward Republican Executive Committee The Broward Republican Executive Committee (BREC) is the main county GOP party group in Broward -- a county where registered Democrats outnumber Republicans two to one. However, the more than 250,000 GOP voters can sway statewide races. The group consists of hundreds of activists who share the goal of electing Republicans to local, state and national office.

We cannot hope to save Broward County if we cannot save the earth.” The Agenda endorses Ken Keechl, and with him all the energy that a man who loves his work brings to the job. The people of District 4, gay and straight, can do no better.

11

Offered the chance to run for the Senate and the House, he turned down both to return for a run at the District, which he last powered in 2010. It was during his tenure that the airport expansion got greenlighted. And the move to enlarge Port Everglades as well. Each project comes with its own stories, ones that are laced with environmentally sensitive mandates. (The mangrove strand that sat in the way of the port expansion is a great example. Keechl fought and was victorious in getting the port to add twice as many acres in new mangroves to one end of the strand in exchange for voting to destroy a smaller portion in the name of progress. “With the enlarging of the

en Keechl is running again for a seat on the Broward County board of commissioners representing District 4—the big swath of real estate that covers parts or all of Deerfield Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Hillsboro Beach, Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, Lighthouse Point, Oakland Park, Pompano Beach, and Sea Ranch Lakes and has more beach in it than any other County Commission district. It’s a job that Keechl really, really wants because he not only enjoys that power, he actually likes being able to direct positive growth in the county. Ken Keechl has been with his partner Ted Adcock for so long (they are approaching their 20th anniversary) that’s it is hard to imagine one without the other. Theirs has been a happily-ever-after relationship we all would love to claim if we could. But when they first met, it was not Ken Keechel the politician that Ted Adcock courted. It was a lonely, handsome thirtysomething gay man who was still feeling the loss of his first lover from AIDS a year and a half earlier. “I went to the hospital day after day, and slowly watched him die a painful, long death,” Keechl told the Agenda. “At first, I wasn’t even allowed in the hospital room.” (It turns out to be one of the reasons Keechl fought so hard to expand the domestic partnership ordinances.) “Unfortunately, while the doctors were doing everything they could to save my partner’s life, it was too late. It was during the time when AZT was the only treatment, and the drug cocktail we use today was experimental. He just slipped away,” the lawyer/politician says, and you can feel the love in the room. “I still have his photograph next to my bed.” Yet to know Ken Keechl is to know a man who is a dedicated public servant who happens to be gay. A man who cares, genuinely cares about the environment, and is a fiscally conservative democrat who hates to spend a penny of taxpayers money without knowing that we will see the benefits in the county. He’s been there before—running District 4, when it was a slightly smaller den. Recently expanded due to remapping, it is no less of a challenge to the tiger that is Keechl with the mane of blond hair and the toothy grin. He wants you to like him, but even more, he wants to do good for his county.

GAYS NOT GETTING TESTED FOR HIV

M

ENLO PARK, CA – More than thirty years into the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and at a time when infections among gay and bisexual men are on the rise in the U.S., a new national survey of gay and bisexual men by the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) finds that though HIV/AIDS is named as the number one health issue facing their population, a majority (56%) are not personally concerned about becoming infected, and relatively few report having been tested recently. Only three in 10 (30%) gay and bisexual men say they were tested for HIV within the last year, including 19 percent who report being tested within the last six months (these figures exclude the 10% who self-identify as HIV-positive). Gay and bisexual men under the age of 35 are twice as likely as those who are older to report never having been tested for HIV (44% vs. 21%). The CDC recommends at least annual HIV testing for this population with more frequent testing advised by many health departments. Only about a quarter (26%) know about PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), a daily pill that people who are HIVnegative can take to lower their risk of becoming infected. Eight in 10 (80%) say they have heard “only a little” or “nothing at all” about the new prevention option. Fewer than half (46%) of gay and bisexual men are aware that the current guidelines for people with HIV are to start antiretroviral (ARV) treatment as soon as they are diagnosed, and only a quarter (25%) know about treatment as prevention. (Research shows that taking consistent ARV treatment can reduce the risk of passing HIV on to others by as much as 96 percent.) More than half (56%) say that a doctor has never recommended they get tested for HIV, and six in 10 (61%)

say they rarely or never discuss HIV when they visit their doctor. “These survey results underscore the importance of getting the word out among gay and bisexual men about risk and new treatment and prevention options,” said Kaiser Family Foundation President and CEO Drew Altman, Ph.D. Just a third (32%) realize that new infections are on the rise among gay and bisexual men. One in four (22%) think the number is decreasing and the rest either think the situation is staying the same or acknowledge that they don’t know. Reflecting the disproportionate impact of HIV in communities of color, gay and bisexual men who are members of racial and ethnic minority groups are more likely to say that HIV/ AIDS is a significant issue for them personally than white gay men (64% versus 42%) and to say that they are

personally concerned about becoming infected (53% versus 28%). Overall, three quarters (75%) say that gay and bisexual men not knowing their HIV status is a major reason it has been hard to control the spread of HIV among this group. Complacency about HIV in the gay community (62%) and HIV-related stigma (56 percent) are also named by majorities as major factors. Many say HIV is not a topic that comes up often, if all, even with those closest to them. Three quarters (68%) say they “rarely” or “never” discuss HIV with friends, and large shares report not talking much about the disease with casual sexual partners (50%) or with long-term partners (60%). While most gay and bisexual men (76%) say they are comfortable having non-sexual relationships with HIVpositive persons, large majorities say they would be uncomfortable with

more intimate relationships, including being in a long-term sexual relationship (66%) and having casual sex (77%) with someone who is HIV-positive. Gay and bisexual men under the age of 35 are more likely to say they would be uncomfortable having relationships, sexual or otherwise, with someone who is HIV-positive. Nearly two in five (37%) gay and bisexual men who did not identify as HIV-positive themselves say they have decided not to pursue a sexual relationship specifically because the person was HIV-positive. Just over half (53%) report being in a committed relationship, including one in five (20%) who say they are married. Twelve percent live in a household with at least one child under the age of 18. Gay and bisexual men under the age of 35 are less likely to report personal connections to HIV than those who are older. Nearly half (47%) of gay and bisexual men 35 and older say they have lost someone close to them to the disease, compared to only 8 percent of those who are younger. Overall, half (49%) of gay and bisexual men say they personally know someone living with HIV and one in three (32 percent) have had someone close to them who has died. THE CURRENT STATE OF THE EPIDEMIC AMONG GAY MEN IN THE U.S. According to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in five gay men in 20 major cities is estimated to be HIV positive with about one third not knowing they are positive. KFF estimates, based on CDC data, are that 12-13 percent of gay men are HIV positive. There is evidence that the situation is worsening. Between 2008-2010, CDC reports new infections rose 12 percent overall among gay men, and 22 percent among younger gay men, driven by increases among men of color.

Music and Movies in the Park – St. Petersburg

First Friday Upper Duval Art Stroll – Key West

Machine in the Ghost – Tampa

Robin Williams’ untimely, selfinflicted death was one of the most affecting celebrity tragedies to happen all year. Ironically, one of his most influential films, Dead Poet’s Society, shows how the social pressures at an elite prep school contributes to a student’s suicidal tendencies. That movie will be highlighted tonight at St. Petersburg’s weekly Music and Movie in the Park. The opening act will be Brazilian group Rio Bossa. Participants are invited to bring a picnic basket and enjoy the water view. 6:00 p.m. North Straub Park. Fifth Avenue NE and Bayshore Drive. St. Petersburg. 33701.

Key West has long been an artist’s colony—an enclave for famous writers, painters, poets, and sculpturists. The city highlights this aspect of their community every first Friday of the month with an art stroll. The stroll includes special art exhibitions and receptions at galleries and shops along Upper Duval from United Street to Truman Avenue. Participants can walk along the street and explore the many galleries showcasing talented Floridian artists. Some of the galleries participating include Frangipani Gallery, SoDu Gallery, Island Arts, Kate’s, and The Southernmost Art Studio. 6:00 p.m. Upper Duval from United Street to Truman Avenue. Key West. 33040.

This intriguing group art exhibition uses Internet programs to create new artwork aiming to examine the increasingly ubiquitous role of algorithms in daily life. Online artist statement software will create a short statement on random topics. That statement is then given to an artist who crafts a work based off of the topic. The artists featured include Nathalie Chikhi, Michael Covello, Shawn Pettersen, SElina Roman, Eileen Isagon Skyers, and Mikaela Raquel Williams. 6:00 p.m. Kirk Ke Wang Art Space. 5120 N. Florida Ave. Tampa. 33603.

Munich’s annual event attracts around six million people and is known to be one of the wildest celebrations in the world. Memorial Park in Jacksonville hopes to recreate that same atmosphere. It will be turned into a German beer hall with locally brewed Oktoberfest craft beers, live oompah music, food trucks serving German fare, beer competitions, and games. Even more entertaining, a king and queen of Oktoberfest will be crowned and allowed to drink for free for the entire event. Some of the brewers include Intuition Ale Works, Aardwolf Brewing Company, and Veterans United Craft Brewery. 12:00 p.m. Memorial Park. 1620 Riverside Ave. Jacksonville. 32204.

Lil’ Kim is a legendary pioneer for female rappers. In the late 1990s, she was the first female rapper to have three consecutive number one rap hits. Her music has influenced many of the female rap musicians today, much to Lil’ Kim’s dismay. In the past ten years she has been known as much for her rivalries with Nikki Minaj, Eve, and Faith Evans as for her music. She was heavily influenced by Diana Ross, a woman who once touched her exposed chest at the VMAs. Tonight she will be performing in honor of The Manor’s spectacular five-year anniversary event. 9:00 p.m. The Manor. 2345 Wilton Drive. Wilton Manors. 33305.

Her musical style is known for its use of a wide array of instruments and complex arrangements. Many songs feature such unorthodox pop instruments as violins, cellos, flutes, trumpets, and clarinets. She recently performed on last year’s season finale of Saturday Night Live. 6:00 p.m. The Beacham. 46 N. Orange Ave. Orlando. 32801.

ince being in Florida, l have found it so handy to just buy an already roasted chicken, rather than buy a chicken and roast it at home. So grab a roasted chicken at your local supermarket, next time you feel like a snack, and use the left overs for your soup.

• 4 pints of water • 1 pint chicken stock •2 celery stalks with leaves, diced • 2 carrots, sliced • 1 onion, diced •1 whole chicken (what’s left of one) • A pinch of dried thyme • Salt & pepper • 1 clove garlic smashed

Although born in Dublin, Ireland, Chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.

•1 /2 bag wide egg noodles (or whatever pasta you have in your pantry)

Combine water and chicken stock in a large pot. Bring to the Boil. While the stock is boiling, dice vegetables and pull apart the chicken, and add all the ingredients to the pot, and simmer for an hour. Remove chicken and debone and shred chicken meat. Remove all the bones. Add the noodles and cook until both the noodles and vegetables are soft. Around 10 additional minutes. Salt to taste. You are the chef.

15 FAT FIGHTING STRATEGIES FOR FALL

floridaagenda.com

A

lthough experts and regular people alike know more about fitness and nutrition than ever, body fat levels are escalating throughout the Western world. The problem is that the best eating plan won’t do you a bit of good if you aren’t willing to follow it. And it boils down to this, when you eat more than your body is willing to burn off or turn into muscle, that extra food turns into fat, lard, blubber, etc.. Sounds ugly? It is, and unhealthy, too. But don’t despair! Here are 15 fat fighting strategies that will help you conquer the ever present battle of the bulge.

HEALTH

Forget the old adage: “I work out, so I can eat anything I want!” Your nutrition each day should be as carefully planned out as any other important activity.

2 3

View your nutrition as a way of fueling your daily activity levels at work, at leisure, and in the gym. Always eat a breakfast rich in protein and complex carbs which will keep your blood sugar steady throughout the day. Never skip breakfast! Have small healthy snacks around to eat between meals.

4 5 6 7 8 9

Before eating anything, ask yourself, “Am I really hungry?” After a few bites ask, “Do I really feel like eating more?” If the answer is “no”, then stop eating!

The word diet has negative connotations. View your daily eating as an overall nutritional plan. Never lose more than 1-3 pounds per week, otherwise you risk losing muscle as well as fat, and your energy levels will plummet! A healthy nutritional plan can be enjoyable if you avail yourself to the vast variety of delicious, healthy food alternatives at your fingertips.

ind new, active and creative ways of F dealing with stress. Don’t succumb to lethal stress and binge eating.

Make sure your other needs are satisfied. Food is not the answer if you are feeling tired, lonely, anxious, burned out or bored.

Contact TrainerTomB@aol.com with questions about your workouts or nutritional plan. Check out www. pumpnincgym.com or call today to set up a face-toface intake and consultation with Tom (954) 557-1119.

25

Focus on eating plenty of low fat protein, vegetables, legumes, whole grains and other foods low on the glycemic index (which measures how fast carbs are converted into energy).

rite down what you eat every day. It’s W easy to underestimate your food consumption, so documenting what you really eat in the course of the day will allow you to make better choices.

on’t dwell on the scale. Instead, focus D on eating for health, feeling good and better workouts.

October 1, 2014

Limit your alcohol intake. Period! The calories from alcohol are empty, valueless, and drinking can only lead to weight gain over time.

10 11

Avoid “fast food” establishments.

ct. 10, 2014, 8:00 p.m., Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale: The U.S. premiere of the luminous Mexican film “Four Moons” (Atko Films/Los Gueros) brings viewers up close and personal with four queer males at various stages in life. Schoolboy Mauricio (Gabriel Santoyo) is aware that he is different from his classmates, including cousin Oliver (Sebastian Rivera). When an innocent game of “show me yours/I’ll show you mine” goes awry and Oliver betrays Mau at school, the young boy is faced with circumstances more difficult than he ever imagined. Old friends since childhood, Adolfo aka Fito (Cesar Ramos) and Leo (Gustavo Egelhaaf) reconnect at college in Mexico City. Their renewed acquaintance occurs at a time when both men are questioning their sexuality. Fito, more secure in his identity than Leo, wants to be open about their relationship, but Leo has issues. Male couple Andres (Alejandro

T

he 6th annual Fort Lauderdale Gay and Lesbian Film Festival runs from October 10 through the 12 and then continues the following weekend, October 16 to 19. Not only has the festival doubled the number of films to be screened, it also has expanded the total run to seven days. A truly international affair, attendees will hear languages including Spanish, Farsi, German, Russian, Portuguese, Dutch, French and, of course, English, among those spoken in some of the more than 30 feature films. Below is the first in a series of reviews of highlighted films from the festival. For more information, including ticket purchasing information, visit http://flglff.com/.

de la Madrid) and Hugo (Antonio Velázquez) have been together for 10 years, although Hugo’s math is off by a couple of years (he thinks it’s only eight). That’s not all that Hugo gets wrong. He is insensitive to and critical of Andres, and is also having an affair with Sebastian (Hugo Catalan). Elderly married poet/college professor Joaquin (Alonso Echánove) seeks out sexual activity in a steam room. The object of his attention, hustler Gilberto (Alejandro Belmonte), wants cash for contact, leading Joaquin to raid his grandchildren’s Christmas gift fund to pay for it. Writer director Sergio Tovar Velarde expertly weaves the four stories into a colorful quilt, offering comfort and discomfort in equal measure. Remarkably, there’s not a false note in “Four Moons.”

Mauricio’s attraction to his cousin is experienced by many gay boys discovering their first stirrings of same sex attraction. In the case of Adolfo and Leo, the coming out process, particularly within a macho culture, is tricky, even today. Anyone who has been in a long-term relationship where one of the partners has fallen for someone else, such as the one depicted by Hugo and Andres, will probably be able to relate to both sides – Hugo not wanting to hurt Andres and Andres desperately trying to do whatever is within his power to save the relationship. The cost of coming out late in life and the toll it can take on a person is presented with precision. However, it’s the incredible scene between Adolfo and his recently widowed mother that is sure to open the tear flood gates. Deftly

combining the coming out process, a mother’s need to protect her children, and the heartbreak of unrequited love, it’s the kind of scene that tends to linger long after it has concluded. “Four Moon” definitely qualifies as a must-see. (In Spanish with English subtitles.)

ct. 11, 2014, 4:30 p.m., Cinema Paradiso: There is much to admire about straight writer/director Eric Schaeffer’s new film “Boy Meets Girl.” First, the film’s lead character, pre-op transgender female Ricky, is portrayed by transgender actress Michelle Hendley, making her film debut. As if that weren’t enough, Schaeffer gets one of the most riveting and unforgettable performances out of Hendley, making it a debut with promise and resonance. Ricky, “born in the wrong body

and the wrong town,” lives at home in Kentucky with her father and younger brother Sam, while she takes hormones and waits to find out if she’s been accepted to the Fashion Institute in New York. She’s an aspiring fashion designer and a waitress at a coffeehouse. Her best friend, straight Robby (Michael Welch), has been her champion and defender since they were kids. Everything in Ricky’s world is upended when local rich girl (and politician’s daughter) Francesca (Alexandra Turshen) comes in for a beverage. The two young women strike up a fast friendship, leading to Ricky telling Francesca about herself by text – while Francesca is sitting right next to her! It’s that kind of intimate detail that separates “Boy Meets Girl” from the pack. “Boy Meets Girl” also turns the traditional romance suggested by the title on its pierced ear. Francesca, who claims to be saving herself for marriage, is engaged to U.S. Marine David (the stunning Michael Galante). However, David and Ricky have enough of a secret history that it infuriates David when he finds out that Felicia and Ricky are socializing. Meanwhile, Ricky and Felicia’s relationship is quickly moving beyond the friend stage. This is sure to confuse more than a few people, but it’s handled carefully and tastefully, and makes sense in context. Through it all, Robby stands by Ricky, as he comes to his own terms with his feelings for her. Smart, sensitive and enlightening on many fronts, audiences from all walks of life would be wise to get acquainted with this film.

incriminating and untrue headlines and labels, such as “killer lesbians” and “lesbian wolf pack,” as well as the misuse of the word “gang” – helped to seal the fate of defendants Venice (pronounced like Denise), Renata, Terrain and Patreese. The four close friends from New Jersey, along with three other women, never thought they’d have a problem being queer in NYC. But everything changes when they are verbally, and then physically, assailed by a man sitting on a fire hydrant in front of the IFC Center cinema. The man, who refused to be interviewed for the doc, is represented onscreen by the voice of an actor reading his trial testimony. The four women, speaking for themselves, tell of his threats of sexual violence, leading to a defensive exchange of words, followed by the man spitting and throwing a cigarette at them. The physical fight that ensued led to the man being stabbed and the arrest of the girls, and their subsequent detention at Rikers Island and later incarceration at Albion State, following the trial and sentencing. As heartbreaking as it is hard to watch, “Out In The Night” not only makes a powerful statement about the miscarriage of justice regarding the trial (the judge also refused to be interviewed for the film), it also presents a portrait of supportive and loving family units. All four women now out of state custody, are forever changed by the experience, and audience members will probably also feel changed by watching this compelling doc.
