Back in the H.W. Bush presidency, there was a campaign called the Daily Point of Light. Georgia Democrat and Senate candidate Michelle Nunn was its CEO. She resigned last Nunn year to run for Senate, but not before giving accolades to Debbit Thomas-Brown as a Daily Point of Light. Unfortunately for Nunn, ThomasBrown is the founder and CEO of South Florida Connects, a foundation who count among its members women who are married to gay men.

Among other things, South Florida Connects is said to protect straight women from gay husbands and compares gay men to “alcoholics, gamblers and prostitutes.” According to Breitbart, during her campaign, Nunn has sought gay dollars, support and votes though she continues to dance the issue of gay marriage. She and her campaign refuse to talk to the gay press and LGBT activists and supporters, including Mayor Kasim Reed and U.S. Rep. John Lewis, have chided her for a lack of leadership on samesex marriage. A group that once nagged Reed on gay marriage pivoted to focus on Nunn.

MMP has published the Agenda newspaper for five years and has grown from a small, local readership to a statewide print following and global readership online. The company is targeting national distribution within a few months, based on its established expansion model. Edited by award-winning author and publisher, Richard Hack, the Agenda newspaper covers both national and local news relevant to the LGBT community and includes editorials and commentary by community leaders that help readers relate the news to their own lives. The National Agenda will base its platform on the news of global importance, supplemented in each region by local news contributed by local reporters. SUNSHINE STATE First Gay Touring Circus, Circus Rainbow, Comes to St. Petersburg ST. PETERSBURG, FL—Circus Rainbow will debut on October 22, 2014, in St. Petersburg, Florida, with shows running twice daily until 2 November. The gay circus will be partnering with the Metro Wellness and Community Centers, which is soon launch a new LGBT Welcome Center in St Petersburg. James Keane, Fundraising and Event Manager for Metro Wellness told Gay Star News: “We are honored to be the benefiting charitable organization of this exciting and unique entertainment experience. “Funds received will help Metro continue to deliver services to clients and further develop programming of value to the community. An official ribbon cutting at our LGBT Welcome Center is taking shape for December of this year.” The concept was created by show business veteran, Philip Anthony, a Florida-based producer, promoter and entertainment manager whose career in the circus world stretches back over four decades, according to the Gay Star News. Mr Anthony is himself heterosexual, but got the idea for Circus Rainbow around 2005. “I’d had friends in the past that had done LGBT circuses in one spot, for just one time. They would include it in their normal route, and when they got to LA, they did two or three days just aimed at the LGBT community. ‘It was very successful, but it wasn’t a custom-designed show for the LGBT market, just “come and see our circus”. After doing lots of research, we think we’ve come up with something just a little bit different – dividing the day into a family time with the 5 o’clock show, and then an evening performance for adults of all ages.’ Anthony has previously worked for Circus Sarasota, The Great American Olde Tyme Circus and Ringling Bros, as well running his own Philip Antony Agency for almost 20 years. He has worked with hundreds of

different acts over the years, and has invited a selection of gay and straight performers to take part in Circus Rainbow. Among these is Rafael Palacios, another circus veteran who has been performing since the early 1970s. ‘My parents were trapeze performers and I used to watch them perform when I was just a little kid and I would beg them to let me go up and swing on the trapeze with them,’ he told GSN. ‘My mother was eight months pregnant with me and still performing on the trapeze, so I think I was born to perform! At the age of five, I started performing with them at Circus Circus casino in Las Vegas.’ Palacios, who is gay, worked for over 20 years as an illusionist with his long-term partner of the time, Larry Fischer. Now solo, he’s looking forward to bringing his aerial routine and magic to Circus Rainbow. He says that he had heard about the existence of a gay circus in Spain when he toured in Europe [it ran briefly to coincide with the EuroGames in Barcelona in 2008], but is surprised that no one had thought about doing this before in the US. “When Philip told me about his idea, I said that this is something that’s going to be fantastic. I’m very excited about it and I hope things go well and it’s something that’s successful and we can keep doing it, and maybe even take it overseas. “In the circus industry, for years, people worked together. It didn’t matter which country you were from or whether you were rich or anything, your common bond was artistic element. That’s part of our mission, to show how we work together.” “I think people are more accepting of things these days. I’m sure the evening shows will be a little more risqué, but it’s going to be pretty family friendly but with a touch of gayness… if that’s the right word to use,” he told the Gay Star News. Since announcing the launch of the

Circus Rainbow, Anthony says he has had many enquiries about the concept, and that the team has been invited to take part in several Pride festivals. You can catch some of the performers entertaining and promoting the circus at Orlando Pride on 11 October and Sarasota Pride on 18 October, ahead of their St Petersburg debut. “There’s always going to be some negative with the positive,” says Palacios, when asked by writer David Hudson if he expects any criticism from more conservative commentators. “It’s just something you deal with,” he chuckles. “We’ve come a long way but there are still certain parts of the country that are still bigoted or discriminate the gay community… all over the world there is good and bad, but I think in certain cities they are more openminded, like in Miami, St Petersburg, Orlando, New York, Los Angeles.” After the St Petersburg dates, Anthony says that the circus will travel to Miami in December, and then Key West in January, before plotting dates across other States for the spring and summer.

Benefits for Same-Sex in Hillsborough County The commissioners of Hillsborough County have voted unanimously to expand its human rights ordinance to outlaw workplace and public-accommodations discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. According to the Tampa Bay Times, the commissioners on Wednesday also voted to set a public hearing for a meeting later this month on a proposed domestic partnership registry, which would give rights to both married and unmarried couples, whether straight or gay. Hillsborough County is located in Western Florida and calls Tampa its largest city and county seat. No commissioners opposed either movement in stark contrast to last year, when four of seven were opposed. Commissioner Kevin Beckner said: “There’s been a cultural and political shift. I think people are beginning to realize the importance of making sure

everyone is treated equally and fairly.” Openly gay, Beckner pushed both the human rights ordinance and the registry. He said involving the local business community was crucial to helping changing views on a board that once voted to ban any country recognition of Pride events. In 1991, more than 2,000 people attended the vote on the human rights ordinance, and guns and knives were confiscated. Although commissioners managed to successfully bar discrimination, the act was repealed just four years later. On Wednesday, only about 20 people attended with six speaking calmly before the vote, four of them in favor and two opposed. “I have faced discrimination eyeball to eyeball,” said Commissioner Les Miller at the vote. “No one should face discrimination, regardless of who they may be.” Gary Sasso, president of the Carlton Fields Jorden Burt law firm, praised the vote, saying: “Your action on this matter will have a profound impact on the business climate in Hillsborough County.” A bill which would allow gay couples to enter into “domestic partnerships,” with a view to extending some marital rights to same-sex couples, was filed in the Florida Senate last year.

Hungarian Pimps Arrested MIAMI—Three Hungarian nationals were arrested in Miami and New York and charged with human trafficking, racketeering and deriving support from prostitution. WTVJ-TV reports that the alleged ringleaders, Gabor Acs, Viktor Berki and Andras Janos Vass, enticed three of their fellow countrymen to the United States with promises of making over $10,000 in quick, easy and legal cash. Initially brought to New York in 2012, the victims were eventually transplanted to Miami were they were held captive by the trio. Once in Miami, the men were forced to engage in prostitution or perform sex acts in front of a webcam for 18-20 hours a day, prosecutors said. All the payments went to Acs, Berki and Vass.

GOP Thank You Dear Editor: While I have been critical of the Agenda’s emotional enslavement to anti-American Far Left ideologies and proliferating exaggerated images of suffocating GOP homophobia; I am compelled to tip my hat to you, Sir, for publishing the Matt Chen’s illuminating commentary on the Gay-friendly Broward and Dade GOP and endorsing Governor Rick Scott. Your inclusion of the Log Cabin Republican viewpoint demonstrates the character to search for the truth. The Republican Party of Broward, Dade and West Palm Beach has given us multiple places at their table, and leadership positions long ago. I’m sure all Gay Republicans and conservative GLBT Independents, who represent nearly 40 percent of the South Florida GLBT voters, are very appreciative of your paper finally giving us a place at the table, Mr. Hack. Sincerely, Louis LaHue Boynton Beach, Fl Editor’s note: While the Agenda has a long history of supporting many candidates from the Democratic Party, it is totally comfortable publishing any views in opposition to its own. Dear Editor: I had heard about a group that walked every Saturday morning. So I went to Hagen Park to see if I would like to join them. The first time I walked with the Saturday walk group was about a year and a half ago. I weighed 252 lbs. that first day and I really needed to find a way to help me lose some weight. We started the walk right at 9 am and as we walked, the further back I got. The rest of the group was walking at a much faster pace than I could go. The further we walked, the further I fell behind the rest of the group. Soon I had lost sight of the group, and I had no idea where I was going. I became very upset with the fact that no one stayed back with me to keep me company or to help me with the route. At that moment, I felt like if I wanted to walk alone I could have done it right outside my house. I didn’t have to get into my car and drive to be treated this way. I did not finish the full route that day. In fact I did not manage to complete the full three mile walk for many weeks to come. All of this did not stop me from returning the following week, however. Each week, I would set a goal to make it to the end of the three mile walk and each week I failed. It was a challenge to meet this goal, but as time went on, I did succeed most of the time. Finally it did happen and I had completed the full route and everyone in the group was very supportive. This of course made me feel really good. Several months later, I had become very ill. Each week, I would fight to be out there walking with my friends. I remember one Saturday, I had started walking with everyone and had gone about 2 miles when I became very sick. A couple of the walkers went to get my car, while the rest of the guys stayed with me to

make sure that I was going to be okay. Thanks to my co-walkers, I was able to get home that day. I didn’t walk then for the next four months. Now I’m back! Walking every Saturday morning. It’s been a real challenge. I now work with R. J. Hadley and I am his co-captain of this group. We will make sure that if it’s your first time walking that someone in the group will walk with you at your pace. We will make sure that your experience with us is a good one. We will walk at your pace as long as you need us to be there with you. It is a great group of guys and we have a great time each and every Saturday morning just out there getting some exercise. Oh, and by the way, I now weigh in at 220 and I owe it to the Saturday morning walks through Wilton Manors. The Brian Neal Fitness and Health Foundation has been a real blessing for me. Thank You! The victims “believed they would only be in New York for a few months to make tens of thousands of dollars before returning to their homeland and their families,” federal agent Melissa Pavlikowski wrote in an arrest warrant. The victims told investigators that the suspects “used various techniques to keep them enslaved, including isolating them from others, withholding their travel and identification documents, and using financial manipulation to keep them in constant debt,” the State Attorney’s Office said in a statement. “This case serves as a reminder that sex trafficking is not limited to any particular race, gender, age or sexual orientation,” Alysa Erichs, a federal agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations in Miami, told the Miami Herald. The sex ring operated in 2012 in New York City and later moved to Miami. Suspects Viktor Berki, 28, and Andras Janos Vass, 24, were arrested in New York City on Friday and are were being held at a detention facility in the Bronx, corrections records show. A third suspect, 31-year-old Gabor Acs, was busted in Miami and sent to a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility, NBC Miami reported. Acs, Berki and Vass threatened and psychologically intimidated the men and took their identification documents and locked them in a safe, authorities said. The victims also experienced levels of violence from the suspects. Neighbors said they saw several luxury cars stop at the suburban home. At one point, they allegedly had a sign on the front door advertising $5 car washes, which is illegal in a residential neighborhood. Police said the car wash was a front for having so many cars pull into the house. “The overall attractiveness of our South Florida area is equally attractive to sex traffickers,” State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said in a statement. “These individuals may have come from a different country to exploit the vulnerable but they used the same basic trafficker tools of fear and intimidation to make their profits.”

nyone who’s watched “David Tutera’s Celebrations” on WE Television should have expected it--Lil’ Kim’s late arrival and ultimate meltdown at last weekend’s 5th Anniversary Celebration for the Manor Complex in Wilton Manors, we mean. This girl is a mess. Well, she’s hardly a girl at 40. But to see her prancing around the Manor in a faux leopardskin pantsuit like the diva she isn’t was enough to make my spies on the scene gag dusty air. (No, I wasn’t there. I was in Philadelphia visiting mama.) In case you’ve been out of town yourself, here’s some background. Lil’ Kim was due to perform at 1:30 a.m. in a 20 minute set that actually had the town of Fort Lauderdale talking out loud since around this beach burg we’re more likely to see the drag version of the rapping ex-con. And while I’m sure the idea sounded like a good one to Gary Santis, the Manor’s producer of shows extraordinaire, the booking did not come without its own risk. Rewind back to “David Tutera’s Celebrations” where Lil’ Kim acted like she still had a thick fan base, and arrived three hours late for her own baby shower. Given that record, The Manor didn’t stand a chance. The rapper was to be flown in, limoed over, and pose for a photo meet-andgreet for 100 of her most loyal fans that were willing to spend $100 for the privilege of standing next to the woman whose major claim to fame was sharing a Grammy Award in 2002 for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals (along with Christina Aguilera, Pink and Mýa) for the single “Lady Marmalade.” She followed the award by lying to a grand jury investigating the 2001 shooting outside the Hot 97 Studio in Manhattan. According to Lil’ Kim, she didn’t know that her co-manager, Damion “D-Roc” Butler, and her bodyguard, Suif “Gutta” Jackson, a former

member of the hip-hop group Junior M.A.F.I.A, were at the scene. Hmmm... The security footage showing the three of them leaving the building suggested otherwise, and, in 2005, Lil’ Kim the rapper became Lil’ Kim the prisoner #56198-054, serving a year and one day in the Federal Detention Center in Philadelphia. Fast forward to last weekend, when Lil’ Kim the new mother (she gave birth to a baby girl Royal Reign) showed up late at the Manor for her gig. She got paid $23,000 for the 20 minute performance plus a 12 midnight meetand-greet where a photographer was supposed to take pics of L.K. with her $100 per fans. That part of the night never happened. Lil’ Kim wasn’t anywhere near the Manor at midnight. Nor for that matter was she near the stage when her 1:30 contracted show time came around. When her 20 minute set finally did get started at 2:40 a.m., her fans were as exhausted as they were frustrated. The one thing they weren’t was surprised.

AS I SEE IT

Well, maybe a little, when longtime assistant Noel Perez (who was celebrating his birthday and his 15 years working with the rapper) came on stage and never left for the entire act. For those who know, Florida native Noel is not a small man, so his presence was very obvious. As was that of the drag queen who brought a birthday cake for the celebration, and proceeded to spend the whole 20 minutes standing on stage blowing out the candles which were of the spontaneously relighting variety. So clever. In any case, the Manor’s major domo Jason Tamanini was not happy with the way things were going for his 5th anniversity spectacular. First the late, late arrival; then the no show for meet-andgreet. So who among us could blame young Jason for cancelling the diva’s limo and leaving her to find her own way back to Bedford-Stuyvesant. The Manor is suing Lil’ Kim, who went on-line and called the club “jankpromoters” claiming she knew nothing about a meet-and-greet. Hmmmm…. Until next week….

HOW THE SUPREME COURT DECISION ON SAME-SEX MARRIAGE AFFECTS YOU

/floridaagenda

COVER STORY

S

The United States Supreme Court

“It’s about time to suck it up and recognize the historical inevitability of equality,” ACL of Florida Executive Director Howard Simon told the Miami Herald on Monday with a nod in Pam Bondi’s direction. After the single debate that Bondi had with her Democratic challenger George Sheldon, she was asked to comment on the same-sex issue. “There are other cases in other states. The sixth circuit is still out there pending so we’re going to see what they do in the sixth circuit, we’re going to be looking at those other cases, we’re going to be reviewing everything in Florida to see what to do next. And again, it just came out less than three hours ago, but this is a tremendous win for the plaintiffs in this case,” Bondi told the Miami Herald. (The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit covers the states of Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee, and is currently ruling on six different same-sex marriage cases.)

“Today’s decision by the Supreme Court leaves in force five favorable marriage rulings reached in three federal appellate courts, ensuring the freedom to marry for millions more Americans around the country. The Court’s letting stand these victories means that gay couples will soon share in the freedom to marry in 30 states, representing 60 percent of the American people,” Evan Wolfson, president of Freedom to Marry, told the Miami Herald. “But we are one country, with one Constitution, and the Court’s delay in affirming the freedom to marry nationwide prolongs the patchwork of state-to-state discrimination and the harms and indignity that the denial of marriage still inflicts on too many couples in too many places. As waves of freedom to marry litigation continue to surge, we will continue to press the urgency and make the case that America — all of America — is ready for the freedom to marry, and the Supreme Court should finish the job.”

October 8, 2014

everal days ago, the United States Supreme Court declined to take up the cases that it had been presented from Virginia, Indiana, Wisconsin, Utah and Oklahoma. The five states were attempting to appeal court cases in which bans on same-sex marriage was deemed illegal in individual court rulings. By declining to hear the cases, the Supreme Court sent a boost of reinforcement to all those same-sex marriage advocates pushing for full equality. While not involved directly in the five cases or the decision-making process, Florida has been in a holding pattern on the subject ever since August 21, when U.S. District Judge Robert L. Hinkle of Tallahassee ruled in favor of those same-sex couples seeking to marry by declaring the ban on same-sex marriage to be unconstitutional in the state. He then placed a stay on his ruling pending an appeal by the state’s Attorney General Pam Bondi, which came quickly placing the matter in the hands of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta, where it still awaits a hearing. Florida’s American Civil Liberties Union, headquartered in Miami, filed a motion with Judge Hinkle to lift his stay, effectively allowing marriages to begin in Florida immediately. In his original ruling, Hinkle attempted to place the subject of same-sex marriage in its proper context as to its importance. “The institution of marriage survived when bans on interracial marriage were struck down, and the institution will survive when bans on samesex marriage are struck down. … Those who enter opposite-sex marriages are harmed not at all when others, including these plaintiffs, are given the liberty to choose their own life partners and are shown the respect that comes with formal marriage.” The Florida ACLU expects Bondi’s office to respond to its move (they have 17 days to do so), though they have asked the attorney general not to oppose the request. But even if Bondi should oppose the request, it is likely that the issue of same-sex marriage with be a hot-topic affecting the November 4 election vote— an election in which both boni and her boss, Florida Governor Rick Scott, are up for reelection.

Recent One Direction single “Steal My Girl” sounds very similar to New Found Glory’s punk-pop classic “It’s Not Your Fault.” It’s no wonder the producers of that single would rip-off New Found Glory—the band has been creating radiofriendly pop punk for almost two decades. Formed in Coral Springs in the late 1990s, New Found Glory garnered a cult following and critical acclaim with such albums as Nothing Gold Can Stay and From the Screen to Your Stereo. Sounds of Simon and Garfunkel – Jacksonville Simon and Garfunkel became cultural icons in the 1960s and 1970s with popular songs like “Mrs. Robinson” and “Sound of Silence.” The classic Dustin Hoffman film The Graduate can attribute most of its success to director Mike Nichols’ inventive use of Simon and Garfunkel’s music. The music became the soundtrack for an entire American generation undergoing a cultural revolution. Tonight the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, along with guests Michael Krajewski, A.J. DINING BY RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN

MARTI’S NEW RIVER BISTRO OPENS AT BROWARD CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

F

ORT LAUDERDALE – The Broward Center for the Performing Arts announces the opening of its new, on-site restaurant—Marti’s New River Bistro—which boasts magnificent views of the New River and offers diners an artful twist on modern American cuisine. Located on the first level of the Huizenga Pavilion on the Broward Center campus just steps from the theaters, Marti’s offers waterside dining indoors or outdoors on the hillside Wendt Terraces. The restaurant opens to the public with brunch on Sunday, October 5 at 10 a.m. and dinner on Tuesday, October 7 at 5:30 p.m. For theater patrons, Marti’s offers a prix fixe dinner menu starting 2½ hours before curtain for evening performances. Marti’s is also a great place to gather after a performance for drinks, desserts, coffee and conversation. Guests who are not attending the theater can also enjoy the distinct Fort Lauderdale flavor of Marti’s on show nights for the prix fixe dinner menu or they can arrive after 8 p.m. and enjoy an à la carte dinner menu. When there is no show in the theater, the à la carte menu is available on Friday and Saturday evenings starting at 5:30 p.m. Both the prix fixe and à la carte dinner menu feature tempting appetizers such as grilled vine-ripened tomato and fresh mozzarella with aged balsamic syrup, classic pesto and a romesco glaze; beef carpaccio, fresh arugula, shaved parmesan and a truffle-infused olive oil drizzle; and a hand-crafted soup of the day. Showstopping entrees include fresh Florida fish with mango and papaya salsa, grilled crispy chicken with a classic French à l’orange sauce and Moroccan lamb tagine. Mouthwatering desserts include honey-lavender ice cream and a decadent fudge brownie with vanilla bean ice cream and a Godiva chocolate sauce shooter. Marti’s serves a delightful brunch

on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with menu items featuring inspired new takes on traditional favorites such as red velvet pancakes with white chocolate chips and fresh strawberries, and a Bistro BLT with candied bacon. The inventive menu also includes butternut squash potato cakes topped with smoked salmon and lemon yogurt whip, jumbo lump crab cake eggs Benedict and southern fried chicken and maple waffles, as well as eggs and omelets made to order. For information and reservations for Marti’s New River Bistro, call 954-5225334. While reservations are encouraged, walk-ups are welcome. Members of Entourage, the Center’s membership program, enjoy access to reservations for Marti’s in advance of the general public. Tax deductible membership levels begin at only $75.00. Information about membership is available at 954-468-2681. Restaurant guests may valet park at the Broward Center or park at the Arts & Entertainment District parking garage at S.W. Fifth Avenue, directly across from the Broward Center. The opening of Marti’s New River Bistro is part of the Broward Center’s capital expansion project to reimagine the Broward Center with new experiences for audiences. In addition to returning the theaters to state-of-theart, the Broward Center has added several new spaces including: the Huizenga Pavilion, featuring Marti’s New River Bistro and the stunning Porter Riverview Ballroom; the Rose Miniaci Arts Education Center with year-round educational programs; two premium hospitality experiences at the Club Level and the Intermezzo Lounge; and updated the Abdo New River Room to offer cabaret-style performances with a modern small plates menu. The Broward Center for the Performing Arts is located in the Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District at 201 SW Fifth Ave. in Fort Lauderdale.

ASK THE FITNESS MAN

SEVEN WAYS TO SHED BODY FAT

1. D RINK A GALLON OF WATER Water is always a crucial element for proper bodily functions, and even more so when fat loss is your goal. The conversion of fat into energy takes place in your liver, and this process requires that you be well hydrated. Drinking a gallon of water over the course of your day is a wonderful goal to aim for. This goal is easily met when you get into the habit of sipping water throughout the day, coupled with drinking a full glass before meals, upon waking and before bed.

3. D O A VARIETY OF AEROBICS Variety is key when it comes to the aerobics side of your routine. Getting in calorieburning activities is crucial to quickly eliminating fat stores. We no longer believe that long cardio sessions are the holy grail of fat loss – but getting your body moving with calorie-burning activities is a wonderful way to intensify your fat loss results. The great thing about aerobic activities is that these can and should be fun! Hiking, biking, swimming, surfing, jogging, brisk walking – any activity that requires you to move your body for a decent duration of time and break a nice sweat in the process.

5. LIFT WEIGHTS You might consider this to be pretty obvious, but many people are still resistant to the idea that resistance training leads to fat loss. If you find yourself puzzled by the idea that lifting heavy things will reduce the layer of fat on your body, then allow me to explain. The act of lifting weights causes those targeted muscles to stimulate new muscle tissue growth. Now this doesn’t mean that your muscles are going to get noticeably larger, but it does mean that your muscle tissue will become tighter and more toned. The increase in muscle translates to a higher metabolism, which means that your body will naturally burn fat faster and more efficiently. 6. USE HIIT High Intensity Interval Training is a method that has been quite popular in the past decade – and for good reason. This advanced form of aerobics, when done correctly, is one of the most effective methods for burning fat. HIIT is achieved by performing short, intense burst of aerobic intervals between less intense bouts of aerobics. For example, 2 minutes of walking followed by a 30 second sprint, done for 20 minutes.

TIP OF THE WEEK: THE JOY OF QUINOA I always knew that quinoa (the seed from a leafy green plant that’s part of the spinach family), is packed with protein and fiber, but my friend Steve Wetzler has taught me how delicious it is too! Steve makes the most tasty dishes using quinoa. Here are three ideas for you: • Mix cooked quinoa with dried cranberries and almond slivers plus a bag of mixed frozen vegetables for an easy – and tasty – low calorie side dish. • You can also substitute cooked quinoa for pasta to make your favorite Italian dishes leaner! • Or how about this: Use quinoa as a stuffing base for stuffed red peppers. Mix the quinoa with a few spices, pureed tomatoes and cooked lean ground turkey, then bake until the peppers are tender. 7. WORK WITH A FITNESS PROFESSIONAL When your car needs new brakes, you take it the mechanic. When you wake up with a fever and sore throat, you go to the doctor. When your hair gets too long, you go to get it cut.

When you need to reduce body fat, you...try to do it all on your own? That makes no sense. The investment is a fitness class or private personal training is well worth it to get in shape safely and quickly. We’re talking about your health here!

4. C UT OUT PROCESSED JUNK This is one of the easiest ways to quickly and effectively reduce body fat, and yet it is met with such resistance. Why? Why is it so difficult for us to give up our packaged, processed snacks and treats? This is one obstacle that prevents most people from achieving the body that they want. The best tip for successfully getting processed junk food out of your life is to have wholesome alternatives on hand while removing the junk food from your home. If you are a late night snacker, then be prepared by having fresh fruit, sliced veggies, plain Greek yogurt or other wholesome snack replacements on hand. When your

belly is full of wholesome snacks, it’s hard to care too much about the processed junk you missed out on. And soon you’ll learn to love how lean and energetic these healthier foods make you feel.

2. CUT OUT ALCOHOL This fat loss tip is always met with groans, but despite its unpopularity it remains one of the most effective. The first reason that alcohol should be cut out in order to lose fat is that it’s filled with empty calories. These are simple sugars that taste great but add up quickly as stored fat in all the wrong places. The second reason that alcohol should be cut out is that the simple energy that your body derives from the alcohol will be used as energy long before your fat stores are tapped, making it impossible to reduce body fat on days when alcohol is consumed. That should be incentive enough for you

to put down your glass and reach for some water.

SCREEN SAVOR GOES TO THE

FORT LAUDERDALE GAY& LESBIAN FILM FESTIVAL

October 8, 2014

O

ct. 11, 2014, 7:30 p.m., Gateway: Writer/director J.C. Calciano’s movies, including “Is It Just Me?” and “eCupid,” usually look great and have a cast of attractive male actors. His latest, “10 Year Plan” (Cinema 175), is no exception. Calciano’s previous films also tended to sacrifice substance for surface, and that’s where “10 Year Plan” differs from the rest. Faithful (almost to a fault) to the rom-com formula (see “My Best Friend’s Wedding”), “10 Year Plan” operates on the premise of the pact made by gay best friends Myles (Jack Turner) and Brody (Michael Adam Hamilton) while in their mid-20s. Essentially, a contract is written up on a bar napkin that states if neither is in a committed relationship by their mid-30s, they will become a couple. Of course, they couldn’t be more unalike if they tried. Big shot attorney Myles is an old-fashioned, gunjumping romantic who has a habit of regularly scaring off potential

T

he 6th annual Fort Lauderdale Gay and Lesbian Film Festival runs from October 10 through the 12 and then continues the following weekend, October 16 to 19. Not only has the festival doubled the number of films to be screened, it also expands the total run to seven days. A truly international affair, attendees will hear languages including Spanish, Farsi, German, Russian, Portuguese, Dutch, French and, of course, English, among those spoken in some of the more than 30 feature films. Below is the second in a series of reviews of highlighted films from the festival, including the venues in which they will be screened. suitors. All he wants is someone to settle down with – forever. Commitment-phobic police officer Brody lives in borderline squalor and is a popular confirmed bachelor on social media hook-up sites. Realizing that nine years, 10 months and 29 days have passed since they struck their deal, Brody has to act fast to find a suitable mate for his BF. When Myles ends up meeting a guy named Hunter (Adam Bucci) online, Brody is unexpectedly jealous. Things get even more complicated when Brody discovers that Hunter isn’t being especially faithful to the smitten Myles. Then it’s only a matter of time until we reach the sweet, but predictable, finale. If all of this sounds too familiar, it’s because we’ve heard and seen it before, including the sex-crazed

co-workers, in this case portrayed by Teri Reeves (Diane) and Moronai Kanekoa (Richard). What makes “10 Year Plan” different, as it follows the fellows from flip-phones to iPhones, is that the writing and acting are a considerable improvement over previous Calciano efforts.

O

ct. 11, 2014, 10:00 p.m., Cinema Paradiso: Directed by Andrew Putschoegl, “BFFs” could have descended into “gay as punchline” territory. However, the performances of the lead actresses (and screenwriters) Andrea Grano and Tara Karsian save it from being offensive. Best friends Kat (Karsian) and Sam (Grano) have a history of unsatisfactory relationships with men. “Closed off” Kat sabotages hers

while “attention whore” Sam resists settling down with just one man. Not only are both women aware of their shortcomings, but so are their friends and family. That’s why Kat’s mother Joan (Pat Carroll) gives her a “Closer to Closeness Weekend” couples retreat gift certificate for her birthday. Joan hopes Kat can patch things up with her ex-boyfriend Ray. Of course, Kat has no interest in getting back together with Ray or attending the weekend getaway. Nevertheless, once Kat and Sam check out the brochure and see the possibilities for a few days of escape from their dreary situations, they decide to attend as a “lesbian couple.” Once there, they meet Jacqueline (Sigrid Thornton) and Bob (Patrick O’Connor), the couple who run the couples’ haven, along with

ct. 12, 2014, 5:00 p.m., Gateway: In “Eat With Me,” Emma (Sharon Omi) is in a dead end marriage to Ray (Ken Narasaki). Ray is thoughtless, a loud snorer, and when he uses a wire cutter to cut off his too-tight wedding band, Emma has had enough. She packs a suitcase and shows up at the restaurant where her and Ray’s hot gay son Elliot (Teddy Chen Culver) is the cook and boss. The restaurant, serving average Chinese food, was left to Elliot by his late uncle and he feels obligated to keep it going, in spite of being six months behind on the mortgage. Elliot makes room for Emma in his L.A. condo, but they have an oil and water relationship. Elliot claims to have a system to the clutter in his house, but neat-freak Emma can’t help but straighten up. Elliot cooks all day at the restaurant and prefers to dine out, at food trucks, for example, when he’s hungry. Emma likes the tacos they have at one such food truck, but can’t resist cooking him an incredible breakfast. One taste of Emma’s cooking reminds Elliot of her taste-bud talents. But their relationship is still strained due to Emma’s inability to come to terms with Elliot being gay. Elliot’s busybody neighbor Maureen (Nicole Sullivan) attempts to help Emma be a better and more accepting mother. Meanwhile, Elliot, who has trouble maintaining a long-term relationship, meets musician Ian (Aidan Bristow). There is potential and spark, but Elliot’s insistence on proceeding with caution could jeopardize everything. Writer/direction David Au adds enough of his own ingredients (Emma’s accidental acid trip, words of wisdom from George Takei) to a fairly predictable recipe, making “Eat With Me” easy to digest.

October 8, 2014

ct. 12, 2014, 2:00 p.m., Cinema Paradiso: Youthful, late 20s triad – emotional Mia (Michèle Fichtner), klutzy but hot and fit jock Lukas (Jakob Philipp Graf), the suicidal journal keeper and flirty but doomed photog Jonas (Holger Foest) – take a road trip at the end of Jonas’ life in the German film “More Than Friendship” (Beyond Pictures). In the end stages of pancreatic cancer, Jonas wants one last blow-out with the man and woman he loves. Tasteful (read: nudity free), but suggestive enough to border on being softcore, the “more than just friends” trio are inseparable. Lukas records their exploits in detail in his diary and reads aloud from it when asked. It’s just one of the forms of entertainment during the trip to the countryside. They also ride bikes, swim, sit around a campfire and go to a museum where they get disapproving looks from patrons who see Jonas and Lukas kiss. Mia wishes it would never end, but Jonas is in worse shape than he’s letting on. Realizing how close he is to death, Jonas even calls mother Vera (Gabrielle Scharnitzky), who also doesn’t understand the threesome’s relationship, to apologize. When an infection leads to hospitalization, Vera and Jonas’s father Peter (Andreas

Külzer) arrive to be with him, alongside Lukas and Mia. But the discovery that Jonas has signed a patient’s will, stating that he wants no extraordinary measures, results in an unpleasant waiting room confrontation between the parents and the paramours. Verging on being a promo for polyamory, “More Than Friendship,” stands out for being a switch from the usual switch-hitter story we’ve seen in straight films, where it’s usually of two women and a guy. The movie is worth seeing for that reason alone.

/floridaagenda

participants Suzie (Jenny O’Hara) and Ken (Richard Moll), Scott (Jeffrey Vincent Parise) and Chloe (Larisa Oleynik), David (Dan Gauthier) and Rebecca (Molly Hagan), and gay couple Jonah (Russell Sams) and JK (Sean Maher), all of whom have their reasons for participating. Following the intro session and dinner, there is a rap session where Rebecca and David have such a nasty fight that they decide to leave. The remaining sessions, including one regarding trust, another involving communicating like animals, sharing without editing and a sexual personality workshop. It’s no surprise then that even though they aren’t taking it all that seriously, such intimacy leads the BFFs to question if they feel something for each other, and if so, how it will affect their friendship. All of this occurs even before the first kiss. The humor, which occasionally borders on TV sitcom, is often worthy of laughing out loud. All of this is to the credit of Karsian and Grano who have a knack for making us laugh at them and ourselves at the same time.

EURO-FUN

V

acationing in Europe has always been popular with the GLBT community. In the past, we have been drawn by many countries’ more enlightened views on sexuality (or at least the appearance of such) as much as for the culture and history. Europe is still the world’s top tourist destination. Millions of the GLBT community flock to its cities, beaches and countryside. Each part of Europe is renowned for some aspect of its culture and entertainment. Paris is known as one of the world’s most beautiful cities, Berlin for its edgier nightlife, Amsterdam for sexual freedom (and its marijuana shops,) Rome for culture and history, and of course, resort islands such as Ibiza and Mykonos for sunshine, beautiful waters and hedonism. While those destinations are all wonderful, many travelers seek less obvious locales. Carlos Kytka, executive director of the Gay European Tourism Association, offers the following suggestions for those seeking new destinations to explore. The Mediterranean seaside village of Sitges, just 20 miles from Barcelona, should be high on your list. It was home to Spain’s first gay disco back in the 80s, and has played host to artists for more than a century. Miro, Dali Picasso, Tennessee Williams and Douglas Fairbanks all vacationed there. The main streets are packed with gay bars and clubs that allow you to party all night and spend your days relaxing on the beautiful gay beach right in the center

Where there’s fashion, there’s a gay community.

TRAVEL

Sitges

of the seafront. You’ll be able to walk to the clubs, restaurants and beaches as everything is centrally located. If you feel the need for some big city excitement, take a day trip to Barcelona, just a 20-minute train ride away. Visit during Gay Pride, June 18 - 22 in 2015, when Sitges welcomes over 100,000 visitors in one of Spain’s most charming pride celebrations. Or plan on visiting next September for Bear Week or “Duckie” an annual event that combines theatre, art, dance and pop music and for events that takes over the area’s clubs. Seafront hotels such as the Calipolis (Avenida Sofía, 2-6, 34 938 941 500, specify sea-view rooms) and Platjador (Paseo de la Ribera, 35, 866-332-3590) are among the most popular places for the GLBT community to stay. Parrots Gay Hotel (Carrer de Joan Tarrida, 16,

34-938-94-13-50) is located in the heart of Sitges, has a restaurant, sidewalk café and a bathhouse and it’s located right in the heart of the action. If you’re on a budget, Hotel Alexandra (Carrer Termes 20, 34-938-94-15-58) is a one-star hotel, just a three-minute walk from the seafront. It’s air conditioned and clean and runs about 43¤ a night. Antwerp, Belgium is known for diamonds and chocolate, but also has a strong GLBT community. Antwerp is the second biggest town in Belgium, located up north in the Flanders region. Because it’s a seaport, it was the richest and most significant commercial town in Europe during the 16th century and home to such artists as Rubens and van Dyck. More recently, it has become a fashion center, home to many avantgarde designers. Where there’s fashion, there’s a gay community. Combin-

ing the two are the “Extravaganza,” a circuit costume party, and the Antwerp Fashion Festival, both in September. In October, “Studio 54 Sportpaleis” claims to be the biggest disco party on earth. LeatherPride 2015, February 11-16, is the city’s annual leather & fetish weekend, including the Mr. Leather Belgium contest. All of the major hotel chains have outposts in Antwerp, but if you’re looking for something more individual, check out Leonardo Hotel (De Keyserlei 59, 32-3-232-14-43), a nice basic hotel close to the central railway station or Hotel Matelote (Haarstraat 11, +32-3-201-88-00), a boutique hotel in the center of town. Next week, we look at a few more European destinations to consider for the road less traveled.
