most divisive issue at the synod, whether Catholics who divorce and remarry without an annulment can receive Communion. The document said these Catholics deserve respect and should not be discriminated against, and then laid out the positions of both sides: those who want to maintain the status quo barring them from the sacraments, and those who favor a case-by-case approach, in which the couple undertake a path of penance. Pope Francis has called for a more merciful approach to these couples, but conservatives have insisted there is no getting around Jesus’ words that marriage is indissoluble. Amid an outcry from

hardline conservatives, organizers of the synod suddenly insisted that the document was merely a working paper that would be amended. Several known conservatives who participated in the synod immediately came out against the report. The head of the Polish bishops’ conference, Cardinal Stanislaw Gadecki, called it “unacceptable” and a deviation from church teaching. Hard-line American Cardinal Raymond Burke, the head of the Vatican’s supreme court, suggested that the Vatican was releasing “manipulated” information about the synod that didn’t reflect the “consistent number of bishops” who opposed its content with conviction.

problems connected to homosexual unions, it has to be noted that there are cases in which mutual aid to the point of sacrifice constitutes a precious support in the life of the partners,” they said. For heterosexuals, the bishops said they must grasp the “positive reality of civil weddings” and even cohabitation, with the aim of helping the couple commit eventually to a church wedding. The bishops also called for a re-reading of the 1968 encyclical Humanae Vitae that outlined the church’s opposition to artificial birth control. The bishops said couples should be unconditionally open to having children, but that the message of Humanae Vitae “underlines the need to respect the dignity of the person in the moral evaluation of the methods of birth control.” There has been much talk inside the synod about applying the theological concept of the “law of gradualness” in difficult family situations. The concept encourages the faithful to take one step at a time in the search for holiness. Applying the concept to matters of birth control would be an acknowledgment that most Catholics already use artificial contraception in violation of church teaching. But it would encourage pastors to meet them where they are, and then help them come to understand the full reasoning behind the ban. Bishops also called for “courageous” new ways to minister to families, especially those “damaged” by divorce. The document didn’t take sides in the

ATICAN, IT—Roman Catholic bishops are showing a never-before-seen openness toward accepting gay couples as well as unmarried couples who live together. At an on-going two-week seminar on family issues last Monday, the church released a summary of the meetings so far. Although there was nothing specific in the way of changes in the document, there was a new tone of acceptance and love, rather than accusation and displeasure. The bishops said gays had ‘‘gifts and qualities” to offer, according to the Associated Press, Furthermore, the bishops suggested that the church was ready to provide them a welcoming place, “accepting and valuing their sexual orientation without compromising Catholic doctrine on the family and matrimony.” For a 2000-year-old institution that believes gay sex is “intrinsically disordered,” even posing the question is significant. “This is a stunning change in the way the Catholic Church speaks of gay people,” Rev. James Martin, a Jesuit author, told Associated Press. “The Synod is clearly listening to the complex, real-life experiences of Catholics around the world, and seeking to address them with mercy, as Jesus did.” While not going as far as recognizing gay marriage, the bishops apparently don’t mind the sacrifices done in the name of same-sex true love. “Without denying the moral

Mormons Attempting to Roll Out Welcome Mat to Gays SALT LAKE, UT—With the legalization by the courts of same-sex marriage in Mormon stronghold states of Utah, Idaho and Nevada, many Mormon’s are speaking out for a more accepting atmosphere for gay members. It was only six years ago that Mormon’s were leading the effort to write California’s same-sex marriage ban. Now, while the church’s leaders have reiterated the faith’s opposition to same-sex unions, it appears to be softening its stance toward acceptance. Some Mormons hope make the church a more welcoming place for gays and lesbians. Erika Munson, co-founder of a group pushing the faith to be more accepting of gays, said she worries about losing younger Mormons because of the church’s stance. One of her five children, an adult son, has chosen to not to practice Mormonism, in part because of the religion’s stance on homosexuality. “People under 30 all know somebody who has come out. They are not the other, they are not scary. They understand that they are just like them,” said Munson, whose group Mormons Building Bridges stays neutral on gay marriage because they want to work within church doctrine. “So, that’s really hard to reconcile with a Christian church where we follow the teachings of Jesus.” On Monday — after the U.S. Supreme Court unexpectedly rejected appeals by Utah and four other states trying to protect their same-sex marriage bans — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said in a statement that the decision will have no effect on church doctrine or practices, while acknowledging that “as far as the civil law is concerned, the courts have spoken.” Still, church leaders are not ready to accept gay unions. NATION ing the U.S. under the Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) program. According to the New York Times, this incident has prompted the Russian government to cancel Russia’s participation in FLEX. The Russian government claims that the student was persuaded to stay in the U.S. by a gay American couple, who made him promises that included paying his college tuition. The U.S. State Department will not confirm this nor identify who the foster parents are. However, the Washington Post has corroborated that much in the Russian government’s account. Russian diplomats are demanding the return of the student to the his natural parents in Russia, who allegedly disapprove of the asylum.

Dems Demand LGBT Envoy in State Department Senate Democrats called on President Obama to appoint a special envoy for LGBT Human Rights within the Department of State, according to The Hill. In a letter to Obama sent over the weekend, 25 Democratic senators urged the administration to create the new position within the State Department to serve as an adviser on international Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) issues. “We believe that the grave threats posed to LGBT peoples around the world necessitate that this Special Envoy position be established as soon as possible,” the senators wrote. The senators argued that a special envoy was necessary because some countries are passing discriminatory laws — even sentencing some to death for being gay. “In nearly eight nations around the world there exist laws that criminalize homosexuality, prohibit public support

for the LGBT community, or promote homophobia,” the letter stated. “To adequately address the challenges posed by these new discriminatory laws, there needs to be coordination of action across the federal government.” The lawmakers said they would continue to work toward congressional passage of the International Human Rights Defense Act, S. 2472, but that because “time is of the essence” the administration should take immediate action. Sen. Ed Markey’s (D-Mass.) bill would force the administration to create the LGBT special envoy position within State.

Asylum Granted to Russian Gay WASHINGTON, DC—Last week, the State Department granted asylum to a Russian student who applied for it citing the Russian government’s anti-gay laws and persecution from homophobic vigilante groups. State Dept Extends Benefits to Transgender Employees WASHINGTON, DC—The State Department announced that it would remove “transgender exclusion” from the agency’s employee insurance policies. The department has about 12 health insurance providers. The first to comply with this new policy is the American Foreign Service Protective Association — the largest, covering almost 31 percent of the agency’s employees. The new policy will make it possible for transgender individuals and their families to qualify for health services not related to gender reassignment, something which was not practiced before this. Secretary of State John Kerry told the Washington Post, “It’s about fairness and respect for our employees, but it’s also about showing the world we mean what we say and say what we mean…. So this matters in many ways. I’ve met transgendered colleagues at the Department and, in addition to being brave and strong, they’re just good officers. Why should they have it any different when it comes to health care?”

TALLAHASSEE—On October 13, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, who has been criticized from every corner of the state, filed a Supplemental Response In Support Of Pass-Through Certification, asking the Third District Court of Appeal to “pass through” jurisdiction and allow two same-sex marriage cases to be heard by the Florida Supreme Court. The two cases, Pareto v. Ruvin (Equality Florida Institute and six plaintiff couples) and Huntsman v. Heavilin, have been consolidated, and attorneys had asked the Third DCA to pass through to the Florida Supreme Court. At the time, AG Bondi wanted

to wait until the U.S. Supreme Court took up the issue, but now the U.S. Supreme Court has deferred to the courts in each state. “While we look forward to having this matter move forward to the Florida Supreme Court, and asked for this on July 30,” Nadine Smith, CEO of Equality Florida said, “AG Bondi and Governor Rick Scott continue to waste taxpayer money while same-sex couples throughout the state continue to endure the indignities of being treated like secondclass citizens. “Nearly two-thirds of the country now live in a state that values equality. How much longer must loving couples in Florida wait to protect their families? Now is the time for AG Bondi and Governor Scott to step on the right side of history and not let Florida go down in history as one of the last states to uphold the principles of fairness.”

UNDERSTANDING THE “Q” IN LGBTQ BY DANIEL HICKS

iden Powell is program coordinator at Purdue University’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) Center. He received his B.A. in history and anthropology from Texas A&M University in 2012 and is currently completing his M.S. in anthropology with a focus on LGBTQ student health. We asked him to explain the origins of the expanded acronym.

encourage someone to refer to an individual utilizing the language those individuals use to describe themselves.

9

Q: Is LGBTQ more common in academic settings? A: Probably. If you look at the website of the nationally known Human Rights Campaign in Washington, D.C., you just see the acronym LGBT. On university campuses, you saw a melding of activism and scholarly research. That kind of advocacy has lead almost every Big Ten university to open centers like ours that support students, staff and faculty. Also, Purdue is a very international university. Students come here from all over the world with identities that don’t fall neatly under LGBT. There are third gender categories like the tomboi from the West Sumatra province of Indonesia, the hijra (hee-jrah) of Pakistan and India, and the fa’afafine (pronunciation???) of Samoa. Even here in the United States, Native Americans acknowledge people as two-spirit and embody the essence of both male and female.

October 15, 2014

Q: What does the “Q” stand for in LGBTQ A: The “Q” stands for either “queer” or “questioning”. It is meant to broaden the umbrella and create a more inclusive environment for those who don’t self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT), or may be in a process of discovering their own gender or sexual orientation. “Queer” is actually an architectural term for angles that were different from what was expected in design blueprints. Over time, however, it became a derogatory slur to describe LGBT people.

Q: When did the “Q” start to become more common? A: People began to reclaim the term “queer” during a process of awakening or empowerment in the 1990s when you saw groups like Act Up demonstrate publicly against the high cost of HIV drugs and multiple LGBT marches on Washington, D.C., as well as pressure to expand the LGBT acronym to include more identities. “Queer” covered people who fell outside a non-binary definition of sexuality and gender. Consequently, you saw the emergence of queer studies and queer theory to produce more inclusive knowledge about members of the community who fell outside of LGBT, which mostly encompassed white and middle to upper class Americans and originated from a very specific part of LGBT activism. The term “queer” therefore began to be used as an adjective or subversive verb instead of just the derogatory noun. But not all people who identify themselves as LGBT adopt the term “queer”. Some still find the word offensive due to negative experiences with the word itself. I always

The History of LGBT History Month

October 15, 2014

O

ctober is LGBT History Month and profiles of famous gay and lesbian writers, actors, athletes and politicians have been appearing in various media for the past several weeks. Even as we pay homage to the trailblazers, we pause to reveal the fascinating background behind LGBT History Month itself. While the celebration is now firmly ingrained in our culture, it hasn’t also been so. The concept for LGBT History Month came by way of a 29-year-old Missouri high-school history teacher named Rodney Wilson, who shared his sexual orientation as part of his lectures on the Holocaust. After a screening of a film Greek Active: about the war, Wilson said, “If I Mythological had been in Europe during World lovers Nisos and Euryalos at the War II, they would have put this Louvre pink triangle on me and gassed me to death, because I am gay.” The same year Wilson joined with Liberation occurred in October, 1979. Kevin Jennings of the Gay, Lesbian and While LGBT History Month is Straight Education Network (GLSEN) intended to encourage honesty and to form a coordinating commitopenness about being LGBT, Wilson tee to discuss turning October into himself faced the ramifications of his a month to celebrate gay and lesbian 1994 disclosure when the Mehlville history. It didn’t hurt that Wilson 1979, the first March on Washington for was backed up by the 2.2 millionLesbian, Gay and Bi Equal Rights and member National Education Asso-

cation, which, in 1995, indicated support of LGBT History Month as well as other history months by resolution at its General Assembly. (Since 1973, the NEA has offered free legal counsel to teachers harassed or discriminated against because of sexual orientation.) LGBT History Month has earned the support of Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, the Human Rights Campaign, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, as well as the NEA. Originally called the Lesbian and Gay History Month, the coordinating committee soon added “bisexual” to the title. It has subsequently become known as LGBT History Month. Equality Forum, a national and international LGBT civil rights organization with an educational focus, took over responsibility for LGBT History Month in 2006. In 2012, Broward County School District made some history of its own when it became the first school district in the nation to officially recognize LGBT History Month when it signed a resolution in support of LGBT Americans. Last that same year, the Los Angeles School District began to teach classes in LGBT history. Furthermore, spearheaded by Gov. Jerry Brown (D-Calif.), the Golden State signed historic legislation into law in July 2012. Brown signed another monumental bill in September of that same year that would ban gay reparative and conversion therapies. Wilson insists that disclosures like his can help save lives. A 1989 U.S. Department of Health and Human Services study said homosexual youths are two or three times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. According to studies, gays may account for 30% of suicides among minors annually.

Knee deep in his fourth election campaign (remember to vote on November 4!), Resnick is as eager to embrace change as he is to maintain what’s been working well since the city that was transformed from an impoverished town on the edge of the ghetto into a thriving gay metropolis, with a higher percentage of same-sex couples than any other place in the United States, except Provincetown, Massachusetts, according to the 2010 census. Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood – Jacksonville

Cintora Casino Night – Fort Lauderdale

Garth Brooks is the second bestselling solo albums artist in the history of the United States—a feat he accomplished by inventively melding rock elements into country music. Throughout the 1990s, Garth Brooks was the dominant figure in country music while also crossing-over into the mainstream pop arena. Duties to his family contributed to his smaller presence during the naughties, but now he is back on tour with Trisha Yearwood. This is his first stop in Florida, the third stop on his tour, and the first time he has performed in Jacksonville in over seventeen years. 7:30 p.m. Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena. 300 A Philip Randolph Blvd. Jacksonville. 32202.

Casino nights at Sidelines allow guests to participate in the fun of gambling without the high stakes of using actual cash. The best part about these nights: all of the money goes toward a good cause. Cintora Casino Night will be benefitting The Smart Ride—a two-day, 165-mile bike ride from Fort Lauderdale to Key West which helps raise funds for AIDS service organizations in Florida. A twenty-five dollar buy-in grants participants $2500 in chips. Casino games featured include roulette, Texas hold-em, and blackjack. There will also be light hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction, and raffles. 7:00 p.m. Sidelines. 2031 Wilton Dr. Wilton Manors. 33305.

Fantasy Fest – Key West Key West’s annual ten-day costuming and masking celebration is heralded around both the gay and straight communities as one of America’s greatest parties. Anything is bound to happen at Fantasy Fest as flamboyant costume competitions, promenades, street fairs, and an elaborate parade turn Key West into a sinfully festive, nocturnal island. This year’s theme is “Animeted Dreams and Adventures”—a play off of the word “anime,” inspired by the wildly popular Japanese form of animation. For more information, visit the official website at www.fantasyfest.com. Different times. Various locations.

Porter Robinson – Miami

Foster the People – Orlando

Macy Gray – St. Petersburg

Porter Robinson is currently considered one of the most important electronic producers in the industry. He has remixed music for Avicci and Lady Gaga—the latter, which catapulted his career and solidified his status as a headlining live artist and DJ. A native of Chapel Hill, he actually began his career as a teenager, having been influenced by videogaming music, specifically Dance Dance Revolution. His first solo album Worlds was released on August 12th. Opening for him are Giraffage and Lemaltre. 9:00 p.m. The Fillmore Miami Beach. 1700 Washington Ave. Miami Beach. 33139.

Los Angeles based indie-pop band Foster the People gained fame in 2011 off of the commercial success of the song “Pumped Up Kicks.” That song and their debut album Torches received Grammy nominations. With such success came constant touring—through 2011 and 2012 they performed 295 shows. Their new album Supermodel was just released in March with lead single “Coming of Age.” 9:00 p.m. Hard Rock Live Orlando. 6050 Universal Blvd. Orlando. 32819.

Macy Gray’s ubiquitous single “I Try” spent all of 1999 and the early parts of the naughties on heavy radio rotation. That single made Gray’s debut album On How Life Is multi-platinum, won Gray a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and seemed to usher in the next talented American R&B and soul singer-songwriter—a 21st century Billie Holiday. Although Gray never quite found that level of success, her distinctive raspy voice garnered her frequent critical acclaim and modest album sales. 7:00 p.m. Jannus Live. 200 First Ave. N. St. Petersburg. 33701.

10/19

Motley Crue – Jacksonville Before the infamous sex tape and his tumultuous marriage to iconic vegan Pamela Anderson, Tommy Lee was just a drummer for one of the most famous American heavy metal bands ever created. Motley Crue’s career in the 1980s and 1990s included numerous hits, brushes with the law, prison-sentences, and drug addictions. Their ninth and final album Saints of Los Angeles was released in 2008 and was certified Gold in 2012. This is their final tour together—they recently signed a “cessation of touring” agreement that will disallow touring under the name Motley Crue ever again. 7:00 p.m. Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena. 300 A Philip Randolph Blvd. Jacksonville. 32202.

things differently—it hopes to not just be a place for gore but also a place for an artistic side. This year’s theme is Dr. Radley’s Nightmare Machine. Touching is not allowed and the proceeds benefit the Cancer Research Institute. 7:30 p.m. Radley Haunted House. 3900 19th St. N. St. Petersburg. 33714.

Cinderella – Tampa Rodgers and Hammerstein’s original television musical Cinderella, back in 1957, was watched by 60% of the American population. This was before DVR made live, event viewing a thing of the past. Last year’s Broadway version of that musical garnered multiple Tony Award nominations, including a win for Best Costume Design. All of the ingredients of the classic tale are included in this musical revival: a missing glass slipper, evil stepmothers, and original songs like “In My Own Little Corner.” 7:30 p.m. Carol Morsani Hall at David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts. 1010 N. Macinnes Place. Tampa. 33602.

Judy Tenuta – Fort Lauderdale Outrageous redheaded funny woman and early LGBTQ-rights activist Judy Tenuta will be performing tonight at Jokers Wild Comedy Club and Bar. Tenuta is known for her coarse voice, accordion-playing, and raunchy humor. Last year she was one of the main performers at Pride Fort Lauderdale. She promotes The Power of Judyism—her own religious concept explicated in a book and comedy CD. She has been nominated for two Grammys and has had numerous specials on HBO, Showtime, and Lifetime. 8:00 p.m. Jokers Wild Comedy Club and Bar. 10800 W. Sample Rd. Coral Springs. 33065.

OLD FASHIONED LOUISIANA BREAD PUDDING WITH WHISKEY SAUCE

• Serves 4 to 6 • Bread Pudding: • 1/4 cup bourbon • 1/2 cup raisins •4 cups (about 1/2 baguette) •1 -inch cubes of day-old baguette • 1 1/2 cups whole milk • 1/2 cup heavy cream • 2 large eggs • 3/4 cup sugar •1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract • 1/8 teaspoon salt •1 /8 teaspoon ground allspice

•2 tablespoons unsalted butter • Whiskey Sauce • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream • 2 teaspoons cornstarch • 1/3 cup sugar • 1/3 cup bourbon

Heat bourbon in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat until warm. Pour over raisins in a small bowl; let stand at least 1 hour or overnight. To make whiskey sauce, bring cream to a simmer over medium heat in a small saucepan. Whisk together cornstarch and 2 tablespoons cold water; slowly whisk into cream. Bring to a boil, whisking constantly. Reduce heat to low; simmer, whisking constantly, one minute. Remove from heat; stir in sugar and bourbon. Set aside and let cool completely. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Stir together bread, milk, and cream in a large bowl. Whisk eggs, sugar, vanilla, salt, and allspice in a medium bowl; add to bread mixture. Stir in raisins and bourbon. Melt butter in an 8-inch square baking dish in oven. Remove from oven, and swirl to coat bottom of dish. Pour in bread mixture, distributing raisins evenly. Bake until bread cubes are browned around edges and custard is cooked, about 35 minutes. Let cool completely on a wire rack. Serve with whiskey sauce, vanilla ice cream and perhaps, fresh berries.

FUEL YOUR DAY, FUEL YOUR WORKOUTS, EAT BREAKFAST!

floridaagenda.com

W

hat’s the first thing you do every morning once you bound out of bed to greet the day? Perhaps you check your texts, or log onto your email. Maybe you post on Facebook or scroll through Grindr. Next, you shower and shave and gulp a cup of coffee as you take the pooch out to poop. Occasionally, when you think of it, you grab a banana or scarf down a quick bowl of cereal. Then you are off to the salt mines for another day at this rat race which is your so- called life. Well, I hate to rain on your parade, but you just cheated yourself big time and started your day on the wrong foot. You neglected to do the most important thing that everyone needs to do in order to insure a successful and healthy day: you skipped breakfast. It has been proven again and again that this first meal of the day is the one, more than any other that fuels your body and your workouts. Yet, it is the first thing that gets dropped on those

busy, hectic mornings! When I speak of breakfast, I’m not referring to the prepackaged muffin from the convenience store that you gobbled on the way to the office. The doughnuts someone was “kind” enough to bring into the break room are not a healthy nutritional choice to begin a long arduous workday. When you skip breakfast and fail to eat regularly

you’re dead wrong. Not only will your body scramble to store everything that you eat as fat, but your metabolism will plummet and your appetite will actually increase! The end result? You will end up tired, crabby, fat and feeling defeated. Recent research shows conclusively that all of the above drama can be avoided by eating a large breakfast high in low glycemic index carbohydrates (whole grain cereals and breads, nuts and fresh fruits, English muffins, and steel cut oatmeal) and protein (skim milk, eggs, lean chicken breasts and yogurt) followed by a low

carb, high protein, and low calorie diet for the rest of the day. Smoothies are also a good choice when you’re in a hurry. Those who eat like this are able to control their appetites and reduce their cravings for junk foods. A healthy breakfast followed by 3 or 4 smaller meals throughout the day insures that you will not run out of energy and your body will actually burn more calories and store less fat. If you are resolved to do something really good for yourself, then start the day off right everyday by eating a substantial and healthy breakfast.

Smoothies are also a good choice when you’re in a hurry.

throughout the day you are simply setting yourself up for failure. Your body begins to think you are starving it, so it responds by storing fat more quickly and readily. Without healthy doses of protein your muscles have nothing to draw from for growth and recovery, especially if you are working out hard and regularly. Denying yourself complex carbs causes your energy level to ebb and sag. You simply won’t have the energy your body needs to survive the day. If you live this scenario consistently, you’ll never have the get up and go that you need to succeed at work, at home, in the gym and in the bedroom. Furthermore, if you believe that omitting breakfast and fasting throughout the day will make you lose weight,

SCREEN SAVOR GOES TO THE

FORT LAUDERDALE GAY& LESBIAN FILM FESTIVAL… AGAIN

October 15, 2014

O

ct. 18, 2014, 7:15 p.m., Gateway: Wade Gasque’s beautifully rendered “Tiger Orange,” a story of gay brothers Chet (Mark Strano, who also co-wrote screenplay with Gasque) and Todd (Frankie Valenti aka pornstar Johnny Hazzard) who different paths in life, like Ken Roht’s “Perfect Cowboy,” has the ability to restore a person’s faith in the lost art of gay indie American filmmaking. While it has enough similarities to Thomas Bezucha’s 2000 masterpiece “Big Eden” to qualify as homage, “Tiger Orange” is original and entertaining enough to stand on its own. Set in a rural California town, just north of Los Angeles, “Tiger Orange” (whose title comes from a paint color sold at the hardware store inherited by Chet after his father died) utilizes flashbacks to illustrate the ways the brothers differed as children. Abandoned by their mother when they were small and raised by their perpetually raging father, Chet and Todd are as different as brothers can

be. Chet stayed behind after college to help his father with the store, while Todd got the hell out of town as fast as he could. Chet, who lives alone in the cabin where he took care of his father until his death, has his safe and stable existence rocked by a pair of events. First, Brandon (Gregory Marcel), an old high school crush who has since come out as gay, returns to town to take care of his ailing mother. Second, tattooed and pierced Todd, who has basically been run out of L.A. following a series of unfavorable events, also returns to town, and wants to stay at the cabin with Chet. As you might imagine, the set-up is rife with conflict. But what gives “Tiger Orange” its roar is the way that the astute and sensitive screenplay handles an array of situations, including the way gay people are

able to coexist peacefully with straight folks in a suburban setting, as well as the portrayal of the complex sibling relationship that arises when both brothers are gay. Strano and Marcel are quite good, but it’s Valenti, who like fellow porn actor Sean Lockhart (aka Brent Corrigan), proves there’s more to him than what we’ve already seen.

O

ct. 18, 2014, noon, Gateway: In Dutch with subtitles, “Boys”(M-Appeal) aka “Jungens” is an insightful exploration of the first blush of young gay love. Teen track team mates Sieger (Gijs Blom) and Marc (Ko Zandvliet) have an immediate attraction as they train for a relay meet with fellow runners Step (Stijn Taverne) and Tom (Myron Wouts). A visit to a swimming hole cements things

when the two kiss. Of course, Sieger tells Marc he’s not gay, in spite of not hesitating to kiss Marc back. The boys’ home lives couldn’t be more different. Sieger and his older brother Eddy (Jonas Smulders), a former track star turned motorcycleriding hoodlum, live with their widowed father. Eddy insists on riding a motorcycle, even though his father disapproves since the boys’ mother was killed in, you guessed it, a motorcycle accident. Marc, on the other hand, is an adoring older brother to his kid sister , and has a good relationship with his folks. As Sieger and Marc’s relationship develops, and they can barely keep their hands off of each other, complications arise. There is Sieger’s possible interest in Jessica (Lotte Razoux Schultz), for example, and

ct. 19, 2014, 7:00 p.m., Cinema Paradiso: One of the best comedies on the festival circuit, “Appropriate Behavior” (Parkville Pictures) begs the question, “Why can’t more lesbian comedies be this witty, smart and sexy?” Writer/ director/actress Desiree Akhavan has made a queer film that, like Ira Sachs’ “Love Is Strange,” will appeal to audiences from every demographic. “Appropriate Behavior” begins with a break-up. Shirin (Akhavan) and Maxine (Rebecca Henderson), victims of lesbian bed-death, among other things, have called it quits and Shirin is moving out. High on the list of other things is Shirin’s hesitance to come out to her Persian immigrant mother and father (Anh Duong and Hooman Majd, respectively). Making matters worse is that Shirin, who has a Masters Degree in journalism isn’t making much of her professional life while competitive and overachieving older brother Ali (Adrian Moayed) and his fiancée Layli (Justine Cotsonas) are taking the medical world by storm. A Brooklyn hipster in training, Shirin finds another living situation with roommates and is hired by druggy Ken (Scott Adsit) to run an after-school filmmaking class for kids. Adding insult to injury, the kids are much younger than the inexperienced Shirin expected. At the (broken) heart of all of it is that Shirin is far from being over Maxine. Through flashbacks, we see their relationship from its clever and comedic commencement to its ugly and cruel end. Beginning with discovering that they have a “hatred of things in common,” as well as being the “same kind of stoned person,” the pair deals with the “dating an immigrant experience,” “playing the Persian card,” and the (unexpected) fluidity of both women’s sexuality. The writing is consistently hilarious and darkly sexy. The therapy session in the lingerie store and the postbreak-up scene where the women run into each other (and their new lovers) owe a debt to Woody Allen. Coming off (and out) like an Iranian Sarah Silverman, Akhavan’s feature length film debut is a triumph, despite an openended finale that feels like a cop-out. But that’s really the only complaint.

ct. 18, 2014, 2:30, Gateway: It’s no exaggeration to say that groundbreaking gay porn filmmaker Wakefield Poole had “many lives,” as is stated in the title of the doc “I Always Said Yes: The Many Lives of Wakefield Poole” (Gorilla Factory) by Jim Tushinski (“That Man: Peter Berlin”). Separated into three acts, the doc features vintage interview footage (including Poole on the “David Susskind Show” in 1972) and current interviews with Poole, writer Felice Picano, artist Robert W. Richards, actress Jill O’Hara, Mary Rodger Guettel, poster artist David Edward Byrd (“Follies”), director Joe Gage, actress Georgina Spelvin, critic John F. Karr and others. From his humble beginnings in Florida and North Carolina to the discovery of his artistic talents in music and dance, Poole was off to a good start. Getting a taste of fame after winning a series of amateur talent radio contests, Poole’s interests shifted to dance and choreography, precipitating a move to NYC and work on Broadway and television. He even found time to marry (and later divorce) actress Nancy Van Rijn. Following a bitter Broadway-related lawsuit, two life-changing events occurred in Poole’s life. He started going to the baths, leading to a relationship with Peter Schneckenburger (aka Peter Fisk) and he became mesmerized by the power of looking through the lens of a camera. On Fire Island Pines in 1971, Poole began to channel “creativity into a new way of bringing it out.” It was there that he filmed the tastefully pornographic “Boys In The Sand,” starring Casey Donovan (aka Cal Culver), an all male film that attracted both gay and mainstream audiences. Poole, who continued to make films with varying degrees of success throughout the seventies and eighties, added even more chapters to his life story. He relocated to San Francisco where he opened the renowned Hot Flash gallery/retail space, mingled with Harvey Milk, began a new relationship and became addicted to drugs. But, like a cat with multiple lives, Poole survived it all, re-emerging as a professional chef, cooking for the likes of Calvin

Klein. Tushinski’s Poole documentary is well worth diving into for its wealth of fascinating and educational details.
