Italian activists, meanwhile, expressed disappointment at the about face. “It’s disappointing that the recognition of gays in the church took two steps forward and one step back,” said Nello Salvai, a local activist. “But it’s clearly a different church under Pope Francis, and I have faith it will move forward.” “It doesn’t seem realistic to change the direction of the church in a two-week meeting,” said Francesco Napolitano, a 39-year-old bus driver who was in St. Peter’s Square on Saturday evening. “For good or bad, the church is slow to change,” he told USA Today.

NATION Alaska Becomes 30th State to Grant Same-Sex Marriages JUNEAU, AK—U.S. District Court Judge Timothy Burgess rules in favor of same-sex marriages in the state. The decision paved the way for same-sex couples to marry in Alaska for the first time, last Sunday. The state announced that it would appeal the ruling, despite recent higher court rulings striking down similar bans around the country, according to the Alaska Dispatch. “The court finds that Alaska’s ban on same-sex marriage and refusal to recognize same sex marriages lawfully entered in other states is unconstitutional as a deprivation of basic due process and equal protection principles under the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution,” Burgess wrote in a order in the case Hamby v. Parnell. The Hamby suit was filed in May by five same-sex couples. It challenged the state’s constitutional amendment limiting marriage to one man and one
woman, approved by voters in 1998. Both parties in the Hamby case made oral arguments in the case on Friday. “As Alaska’s governor, I have a duty to defend and uphold the law and the Alaska Constitution,” Gov. Sean Parnell said in a press release. “Although the district court today may have been bound by the recent Ninth Circuit panel opinion, the status of that opinion and the law in general in this area is in flux. I will defend our constitution.” Parnell was referring to a ruling last week from a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which ruled to overturn similar marriage bans in Idaho and Nevada. Same-sex marriage advocates said the 9th Circuit ruling would likely lead to the quick overturn of Alaska’s ban on gay marriage because the bans were similar and Alaska also falls under the jurisdiction of that court. Even as the state vowed to appeal the decision, officials with the state’s Bureau of Vital Statistics said they would begin accepting applications for same-sex marriage licenses at 8 a.m. last Monday. “The license application begins the
three-day waiting period before the license can be issued. All marriages in Alaska must have the marriage license issued before the ceremony is performed,” wrote Phillip Mitchell, head of the Bureau of Vital Statistics. “We expect our office will be busy tomorrow but we will make every effort to help customers as quickly as possible.” Two of the plaintiffs in Hamby vs. Parnell, Courtney Lamb and Stephanie Pearson, said Sunday that they plan to be among the first to apply for a marriage license. The Anchorage medical biller and graphic designer have been a couple for two years. “We’ll go down and file for it tomorrow, and then we’ll work on finding somebody to marry us,” said Lamb. In 1998, Alaska was one of the first states to implement a ban on samesex marriages when voters approved an amendment to the Alaska Constitution defining marriage as between one man and one woman. Sunday’s ruling makes Alaska the 30th state to have full marriage equality, according to Evan Wolfson, founder and president of Freedom to Marry, a national political action group that has

bartender for more than 40 years at iconic New York City hangouts such as “The Saint”, “Stonewall” and “Studio 54”, Sal DeFalco of Wilton Manors personifies the rise and evolution of HIV in America. But while he’s been able to beat the scourge for 35 years, his face has vanished from behind the bar at “Hunters” on Wilton Drive. “I’ve gone from living in the light to living in fear,” says DeFalco, one of the most prolific male hustlers of the late 1970s. On September 5, DeFalco was diagnosed with brain, throat and lung cancer and underwent surgery for the first tumor in his head on September 15, six days after turning 56th birthday. With his partner of 25 years Claude Tant at his side, DeFalco’s next operation is scheduled for this week. De Falco grew up in the New Jersey projects and ran away from home when he was 14, landing his first job at New York City’s Limelight, a Mafia-owned drag palace. At 19, he became one of the original bartenders at Studio 54, which was
worked toward overturning marriage bans across the country since 2003. Burgess found that none of the state’s arguments in support of the ban — including its primary argument that the issue of marriage should fall to voters, not the courts — were constitutional. Burgess, who was appointed to the bench by President George W. Bush in 2005, wrote in his order that the state offered little evidence supporting the reasoning that the marriage decision falls to the voters. Even if the amendment to the Alaska Constitution was not designed to discriminate, as the state argued, Burgess said that it clearly did. “By singling out homosexual couples and banning their ability to marry an individual of their choosing, it is impossible to assert that all Alaskans are equal under the state’s laws,” Burgess wrote. Jim Minnery, the head of Alaska Family Action group, which opposes same-sex marriage, said Sunday that he viewed the judge’s decision as a “subversion of the democratic process.” “What this really comes across as is not so much the people’s constitution as individuals in black robes,” Minnery said. “That’s disconcerting to a lot of us.”
owned by Ian Schrager and the late Steve Rubell, who died of AIDS in 1989. He recalls a laundry list of romantic encounters with famous names like music mogul David Geffen, record executive Clive Davis, fashion designer Calvin Klein and singersongwriter Peter Allen, who penned his Oscarwinning “caught between the moon and NYC” lyric as his flight circled above LaGuardia airport and DeFalco waited for his plane to land. Allen died of AIDS in 1991. Today, as he fights for his life, DeFalco raises a red flag about what he calls new “communion parties” springing up at local Fort Lauderdale hotels, where new HIV drugs like Truvada give local gay men a misplaced sense of invincibility to unprotected sex that replaces last century’s foregone era of plain ignorance. “(Unprotected sex) went on in bars, back alleys, bath houses and on the balconies of Studio 54 and The Saint,” says DeFalco. “If this (behavior) keeps up, there will be a new superbug that the government can really blame on us instead of the GRID (Gay Related Immune Deficiency) syndrome that they tried to blame us for then.”

Florida Mayoral Candidate’s Felony Jury Trial Set for November 10
9
WILTON MANORS—Boyd Corbin, a candidate for mayor of Wilton Manors, FL will face a six-member jury trial on November 10, 2014, six days after the general election. Corbin is charged with felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a bamboo tiki torch, during an outdoor 2012 Halloween costume contest hosted by Michael Walters a professional female impersonator. The incident occurred on a stage in the parking lot of a bar with over 1,000 people in attendance. The only witness to substantiate Walter’s claim is a friend who sells him flowers for his weekly drag show. Corbin insists he was the one who was attacked when the drag queen came off the stage with a flurry of angry punches and a kick that caused the high heel wearing Walters to lose his balance and fall, bruising his leg. A security guard’s deposition states he had to restrain the drag queen from his attack on Corbin, yet the Broward County State’s Attorney’s Office refuses to drop the felony assault charges costing Corbin $20,000 in legal fees. Walters told a local newspaper he went to the emergency room the next day, but his story changed during his sworn deposition.
The Wilton Manors Police Department took a recorded sworn statement from an independent witness, a retired police officer, who backed Corbin’s version of the events. This statement was “misplaced” by the state’s attorney office for over a year before the defense could depose this witness. During a September 5, 2014 court hearing, the defense lawyer, the lawyer working for the state’s attorney’s office and the judge had a side bar discussion. Corbin’s defense lawyer told him that the state’s attorney’s lawyer told the judge she refuses to go to a trial with this case on ethical grounds since the charges are so ridiculous. Broward County has twice the per capita arrest rate of other Florida counties. This is not because of a higher incidence of crime. The police know that the Broward County State Attorney’s Office routinely prosecutes a high number of cases brought to them. Most felony arrestees accept a misdemeanor plea since they don’t have $20k to hire a private lawyer for a jury trial. Officer Kevin Laughren who arrested Corbin was named Wilton Manors police officer of the quarter when he set a record of 63 arrests during the third quarter of 2012. The Wilton Manors police detective who worked this case, Frank Pilewski, knows Corbin and his friends from Pilewsky’s routine drinking at local bars over the past decade. He did not make an attempt to interview the security guard involved with the incident before or after the arrest. Corbin is waiting for the results of an Internal Affairs investigation from a June 2014 incident where Pilewski is being investigated for allegedly battering Corbin in front of a security guard at another Wilton Manors bar. Corbin is using this and another resident’s arrest as examples of how the Wilton Manors Police Department needs to focus on home invasions and two decades of sexual activity in Colohatchee Park instead of knowingly arresting innocent residents. During his campaign he has knocked on a majority of the 12,000 resident’s doors asking them to look at his website www.mayorboyd.com. The website’s “Arrest” page includes police reports, witness statements and depositions from his arrest.

KEY WEST—Aaron Huntsman and William Lee Jones have been selected as Grand Marshals of Key West’s Fantasy Fest Parade. Huntsman and Jones made headlines last July when Circuit Judge Luis Garcia ruled that the two men could legally wed in Monroe County, of which Key West is a part. Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi immediately appealed the judge’s ruling. It effectively stopped their wedding and other same-sex marriages from taking place in the state. Fantasy Fest is a 10-day costuming and masking festival that began last Friday. The Fantasy Fest parade takes place this coming Saturday, October 25, and is expected to attract 60,000 people. “Being chosen as grand marshals for Fantasy Fest is a great honor towards our fight for marriage equality and it’s a great opportunity to stand up as one human family here in Key West and show the rest of the state, if not the world, that equality needs to be for everybody,” Huntsman said in a statement. The parade consists of marching groups, bands, motorized floats and street dancers.

A Thank You from the Founder on Turning 50 Agenda founder Bobby Blair turns 50 this week, and we celebrate his birthday along with friends, family and the LGBT community. But in typical Bobby Blair fashion, he turns the spotlight away from himself, giving thanks to those who have made his life the wonderful adventure it is.
A
s I start this week, my last week in my 40’s, I reflect on all the amazing people I have met in my life. People I have shared dreams with. People I have laughed and cried with. People who inspired me to dream big and see no boundaries. People who encouraged and supported me when I decided to live my truth. People who made me better in every department of my life as I learned from them and watched in awe as they accomplished their own dreams and goals. Finally and most importantly the people who just loved me for me. As I enter my 50’s this Friday, I take you ALL with me to the second half of
my life. I will continue my efforts to try to inspire others to live their truth. My greatest hope is that we all recognize that we are all special in so many ways—each with an amazing gratitude list of life’s gifts upon which we can build and work from every day of our life. We can use our skills as a strengthening tool as we defend against the tougher things that get thrown our way in what we call life. God has created all of us unique in every way. Different in such a way we can only choose to run our own race in life. I hope everyone arrives one day at your finish line with a life well lived where you loved immensely and were loved back. I hope we can say we shared our good fortunes with as
many people as possible. In closing, the biggest thing I have learned in my first 50 years is not what I have done for others that impacted people the most, but how I made people feel that made the biggest difference. I will take this learned lesson and all the lessons I have learned and try to have the best second half of my life possible with friends and family, and new friends in the future as I am blessed to have. Collectively we will work to make all our lives happier, healthier and more rewarding every day. Thank you to all my friends, family, coaches, business partners, supporters and finally my life partner Brian Neal for making my first 50 years so incredible. THANK YOU! Festival Miami – Miami
Capital Cities – Tampa
Annie – Jacksonville
Indie pop duo Capital Cities is best known for their top ten single “Safe and Sound.” That song not only charted at #1 on the US Alternative Songs chart, but it also has been used in a wide range of commercials, including one for a German Vodafone and one for a 2014 Mazda 3. Their first album with Capital Records was released in 2013. Titled In a Tidal Wave of Mystery, the album received both critical kudos and modest success. They most recently performed with Katy Perry on the North American leg of her Prismatic World Tour. 8:00 p.m. The Ritz Ybor. 1503 E 7th Ave. Tampa. 33605.
Everyone’s favorite redheaded orphan makes her way to the Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts. Based upon the classic Harold Gray comic strip Little Orphan Annie, Annie tells the story of an eleven year-old orphan dealing with the harsh conditions of her Depressionera orphanage. She spends the beginning of the musical desperate to find her parents. Evil Miss Hannigan gets in her way, a kind millionaire shows her love, and she sings about “Tomorrow” and her “Hard Knock Life.” The touring production runs until October 26th. 7:30 p.m. Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts. 300 Water St. Jacksonville. 32202.
Festival Miami is a three-week long festival that highlights the many different genres of music that help make Miami special. Hosted by The University of Miami Frost School of Music, the festival includes twenty-five to thirty concerts featuring Grammy Award-winning and internationally acclaimed musical guest artists, master faculty artists, and award-winning student ensembles. Some events are offered free. Many sessions include an educational component, such as master classes, open rehearsals, and conversations with artists. The four themes presented are great performances, jazz and beyond, creative American music, and music of the Americas. 8:00 p.m. Gusman Concert Hall. 1314 Miller Drive. Coral Gables. 33146.

October 22, 2014
Moon Taxi may be from countrymusic capital Nashville, but their music is much more indieprogressive rock. Five Belmont University students formed the band in 2006. They found success in 2013 with the release of their third studio album Mountains Beaches Cities. Performances on both The Late Show with David Letterman and Conan have helped cement their status as an up-and-coming band worth recognition. 8:00 p.m. House of Blues. 1490 E. Buena Vista Drive. Lake Buena Vista. 32830.
The sixth annual event allows kids of all ages to indulge in games, crafts, and costume contests. Sponsored by the Key West Botanical Garden Society, the event hopes to educate the community on making Halloween a more ecofriendly holiday. Participants will learn new ways to reuse items for costumes, decorations and fun activities, so that the earth is kept in better shape. There will also be a bounce house, food, and treats sprinkled throughout the garden. 2:00 p.m. Key Tropical Forest and Botanical Garden. 5210 College Rd. Key West. 33040.
Coral Skies Music Festival – Tampa This indie rock music festival not only features a stellar line-up of alternative music performers,
but it also has a wide selection of craft beers, a food trucktopia, and art vendors. Among the performers are Julian Casablancas of The Strokes fame, now playing with The Voidz, and Manchester Orchestra. The headlining act is Cage the Elephant—a group who received noteworthy popularity and acclaim with their self-titled debut album back in 2008. Their newest album is named Melophobia—a word for a fear of music, something none of the attendees of this highly anticipated festival will have. 12:00 p.m. MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre. 4802 U,S. 301 N. ASK THE FITNESS MAN
Dr. Don Fisher
Dr. Don Fisher, D.O., is the Medical Director at The Best Program in Fort Lauderdale and is an expert in the field of Age Management Medicine and Bio-identical Hormone Replacement. We questioned Dr. Fisher specifically about the widespread (some say alarmingly high) use of testosterone supplementation by gay men.
Q: Testosterone treatment comes in many forms including topical gels and injections. What treatment works best in your opinion? A: I sometimes recommend a compounded form of testosterone cream that men apply twice daily. Some men do not absorb
muscle mass, poor sexual desire and performance, moodiness (like a grumpy old man), poor workout ability and poor recovery from workouts and belly fat and love handles. Q: Is there any evidence to support the allegation that testosterone supplementation promotes the risk of prostate cancer in men? A: NO! Hormones do not cause cancer and testosterone does not cause prostate cancer. There are even recent studies by a Harvard urologist, Dr. Morganthaler, where testosterone has been given to men WITH metastatic prostate cancer with no increase in the rate of progression. I do like to share with my patients what does increase the risk but hormone replacement is not the biggest concern.
testosterone well and it won’t improve symptoms adequately. Men over 50 generally do better with injectable testosterone. There are several forms of injectable testosterone (cypionate, propionate and enanthate, etc.) I always recommend Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) along with
Q: The science of age management is relatively new. What are some of the indicators you look for in your patients to optimize good health? A: Age Management means doing all that we can do to stay healthy. Simply put, we want all hormones youthful, optimal and balanced. Diet and lifestyle should be optimal. Take the right supplements. Limit stress and manage stress and exercise and stay social. If we find the right balance, we can stay healthy, happy and fit and stave off chronic disease and age well. Like I tell my patients, I
want to get old BUT not feel old. Don’t plan for poor health and infirmity – be proactive and stay fit. Don’t plan to get old and sick – talk with an age management physician.
Peter Jackson is a fitness and nutrition expert and the owner of Push Fitness, Club One CrossFit and Inner G Yoga in Oakland Park, Fl. E-mail him your questions and concerns at Peter@PushFitnessFTL.com or visit him online at www.PushFitnessFTL.com

Q: What are the proven benefits of testosterone supplementation say, to a man in his 50s who has been clinically diagnosed with low T?
A: Low T as it has been marketed causes these typical symptoms and signs: Poor energy – especially with exertion, fatigue and loss of stamina, “brain fog” and poor focus and concentration, lack of strength and
testosterone as it signals testicles to produce endogenous testosterone and decreases the risk of testicular atrophy (loss of testicle size). The best form of testosterone is the one that a man can easily comply with AND that best alleviates symptoms. We always want to monitor levels to ensure efficacy and safety.
October 22, 2014
Q: The use of testosterone replacement therapy in men has skyrocketed in recent years as the science of age management grows. Critics say testosterone is the new botox and is being overprescribed. Is there any justification to that criticism? A: Testosterone declines in most men over the age of 30 and the pharmaceutical industry has made it much more available – and likely that is why we see it being prescribed more lately. I feel most doctors don’t prescribe testosterone at the level that makes a difference and at correct doses and then monitor it correctly. I am an advocate for replacing testosterone NOT just for minor improvements but to replace it to that level that would be high normal – and in doing that, we lessen men’s risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, risk of obesity and other chronic diseases not to mention men look better, feel better and have improved sex. The key here is to give men the testosterone back that they lack.
Q: Prior to becoming the medical director at The Best Program, you specialized in HIV medicine. Why is testosterone so widely prescribed in men with HIV? A: HIV infects and affects the Leydig cells of the testes. Almost two thirds of HIV positive men have low testosterone and we want men with HIV to maintain their muscle mass and stay strong. HIV positive men feel better and stay stronger with hormone replacement with testosterone.

J. MARK’S RESTAURANT 1245 N FEDERAL HWY, FT LAUDERDALE, FL 33304 954-390-0770
October 22, 2014
The room is cleverly designed with a comfortable, edgy, contemporary, clean atmosphere. There’s lots of soft wood tones shedding just the right amount of lighting for a relaxing, yet stimulating, experience. Be seated to your left in the quaint and semi private-booths. Or, walk up a slightly curved ramp to an exciting and lively generous bar area with high top tables and an over-sized outdoor covered patio that will sure to be your fun spot for that evening. The view of the parking lot/Main Street is somewhat camouflaged by the abundance of greenery including some specimen palms. While they soften and enhance the seating area, they join a red awning for a serene, yet colorful, touch. Waiters abound, very handsome in crisp white button-down shirts, tucked into blue jeans with black waist-strap aprons. And let’s not forget the contagious smiles. Polite, energetic, and completely knowledgeable, these fine servers are equipped to assist you in your choice of a cocktail and entrée to start off an enjoyable dining experience. I selected one of J. Mark’s Signature Drinks—the watermelon martini. Smooth, colorful and garnished with, what else, a sliver of ripe watermelon carefully placed at the edge of the glass. We then ordered a salad and an appetizer—the Spinach Salad and the Ahi Seared Rare Tuna. First, the fresh Spinach Salad ($12.99) The light lime vinaigrette dressing added such a great citrus flavor to an already warm bacon dressing base. Hard-boiled eggs pieces of crisp real bacon, red onion, and goat cheese generally added,
combined to make a more-thanenough salad. Scrumptious! Ahhh, the Ahi Tuna Appetizer ($13.99) This dish is served with three open lettuce cups filed with Cajun-crusted, seared rare tuna, with just the right amount of drizzled wasabi pesto, garnished with pickled cucumber. You might want to skid dessert and order a second tuna app—it’s that good. I switched my choice of drink to a house wine—a nice, crisp California Pinot Grigio, dry with a medium boby and neutral flavor. Just right for my entrée selection—Jumbo Blue Crab Cakes ($26.99). These fantastic cakes are served beautifully on a white oval dish, accompanied by two distinctive dipping sauces. In the spicy remoulade, I detected a tad of creole mustard, green onion, lemon zest with just the right amount of garlic for a tangy taste for this crab meat. The other sauce is a combination of their housemade tartar ingredients. I used both for dipping and enjoyed them equally--my appetite completely satisfied. My guest was in the mood for a steak, so his next drink order was a Pinot Noir--a dry red with a palate of warm spice nuances. Rib-Eye Steak ($26.99) was hand-cut from the loin, perfectly aged. Tender and juicy, this steak is delectable. Order it medium rare and it will meat in your mouth. The smooth-textured garlic mashed potatoes not only added to the meal, they made it a front runner. Search no more for a good steak in town. Just the check please—we needed to walk this off immediately. And then absolutely return once again with a craving for another wonderful dining experience. Kudos to J. Mark’s, their chef, line cooks and stellar servers.

SCREEN SAVOR
THAT OLD TIME RELIGION
“A
film of the theatrical experience,” “Southern Baptist Sissies” (Breaking Glass Pictures) might feel like a bit of a letdown after the “Sordid Lives” movie and subsequent TV series. But the strength of Del Shores’ writing and the performances of the talented cast go a long way in convincing the viewer to overlook the limitations of the stagey presentation. Honoring the piece’s theatrical roots, “Southern Baptist Sissies” is presented in two acts. In the first, amidst the fire and brimstone pews of the Calvary Baptist Church in Dallas, we meet Mark (Emerson Collins), who functions as the narrator. Fellow sissies at the church include his best friend Andrew (Matthew Scott Montgomery), his crush TJ (Luke Stratte-McClure) and Benny (Willam Belli, of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” renown), described as “the biggest sissy of all.” According to Mark, it is in this church that they “learned to hate themselves.” Across the stage, in a gay bar setting, Peanut aka Preston (the inimitable Leslie Jordan) and Annette Odette (Dale Dickey), who has had a series of unfortunate events, act as an unofficial Greek chorus, either commenting on the action or relating their own sordid tales. Peanut and Annette Odette’s scenes are a potent blend of laugh-out-loud comedy and tearjerking tragedy, like those involving the sissies, which is something that speaks to Shores’ flair for dialogue. “Southern Baptist Sissies” provides the details of the young sissies’ formative years as well as glimpses of them as adults (at least those who survived). Benny, who was the most at ease with his sexuality, is now a drag performer known as Iona Traylor. TJ, however, the most devout of the bunch, became a fanatical preacher in adulthood. That doesn’t erase his intimate relationship with Mark, nor Mark’s feelings for him.
(practically anything Peanut says). DVD special features include a pair of music videos, cast interviews and a behind the scenes featurette.

Leslie Jordan in “Southern Baptist Sissies”
But in the dramatic conclusion to the first act, it becomes clear that while Mark is ready to embrace who he is, TJ (who obviously has strong feelings for Mark) can’t discard his faith. The second act also incorporates both comedic and dramatic situations. Gay realization comes to Andrew who admits to masturbating to pictures of N*Sync, but he struggles with being gay. When his mother discovers Andrew’s personal gay stash, things go rapidly downhill and the first tragedy occurs. Benny who embraced his identity early at
bible camp, keeps in the loop with Mark through Mark’s column in a gay publication. Meanwhile, TJ, who desperately tried to wash away his attraction to men, and Mark do get to have a final confrontation. And, in spite of having had a crush on Jesus and “allowing” the Baptists to fuck him up, Mark is a survivor, taking the God is love message to heart and waking up daily with hope. Strongly recommended, “Southern Baptist Sissies” will make you cry (Annette Odette’s confession is one example) and laugh so hard that you’ll cry
he doc “Corpus Christi: Playing With Redemption” (Breaking Glass Pictures) follows a theater company’s production of the Terrence McNally play “Corpus Christi,” in which the Passion story is retold depicting Jesus Christ as a gay man in 1950s Texas. Described as “a life-changing journey” for the cast and director, the film focuses on the period between 2006 and 2011, when the play was produced in a number of US cities, as well as in Ireland, Scotland and Mexico. As you might expect, they were met with their share of resistance, usually represented by unemployed and unbathed religious zealots who have plenty of time on their hands to protest theatrical productions they haven’t actually seen. Featuring interviews with McNally, McNally’s lawyer husband Tom Kirdahy, Norman Lear, Larry Kramer, as well as some religious leaders and others. A majority of the interviews are conducted with the cast and director Nic Arnzen (who co-directed the doc along with actor James Brandon, who also plays Joshua/Jesus in the play). Therein lies the problem: actors talking about acting can be a risky and distracting proposition. The inclusion of the cast’s personal stories and their own experiences with religion are only moderately more interesting. The end result, intentional or not, is that “Corpus Christi: Playing With Redemption” will probably only fuel fans of the play’s desire to see a full-length dramatic film adaptation of McNally’s controversial creation. DVD special features include interviews, backstage footage, play performance scenes, news footage, photo gallery and more.

ichael Sam, Ian Thorpe, Amelie Mauresmo, Tom Daley, Brittney Griner, Megan Rapinoe… the list of professional, out athletes keeps growing, but that still doesn’t mean it’s always easy to be openly gay in sport. Thomas Castets, founder of GaySurfers.net, said in “Out in the Line-Up,” his documentary about homophobia in the surfing community, “We are all quite aware of the prejudice and discrimination against LGBT people in sports, but I hadn’t necessarily considered surfing as one of the last “bastions” of homophobia.” Castets asked members of his on-line LGBT surfing community for suggestions to improve this situation. “After running a survey on www.GaySurfers. net,” he said, “We found that gay surfers really wanted us to create surf trips with other gay surfers.” The documentary also inspired Marta Dalla Chiesa of Brazil Ecojourneys to action, “It was a real eye-opener for our company. It inspired us to reach out and partner with GaySurfers. There are a lot of people out there who would like to be surfing but are holding back because of homophobia they’ve encountered. Surfing amongst friends allows them to live their dream.” After a successful first run year, Castets and his company have partnered with Brazil Ecojourneys to organize a week of surfing, relaxing and yoga in Praia do Rosa in South Brazil from Oct. 25 through Nov. 1 again this year. The week’s activities begin with a two-night stay in Florianopolis, known as a gay friendly resort town, the Fire Island of Brazil, if you will. The group is then transported to Praia do Rosa, on the southern coast of Santa Catarina, famous for its perfect waves, its rustic-chic guesthouses and restaurants. On the first day, between checking in at the townhouse accommodations in Florianopolis and the welcome dinner the first night, the afternoon is open for free exploration. After dinner,

an optional nightlife tour focusing on GLBT friendly spots will be available. Sure to be among them are Bar do Deca (aka Bar on the Beach) with its DJs spinning from afternoon until late night. Bar do Deca (97 Rua Rita Lourenço da Silveira, 55-48-3233-6507) is right on gay Mole Beach. Right in downtown Florianópolis, the Concorde Club (729 Rio Branco, 55-48-3024-4969) is the hot dance club. Barbarella Lounge (351 Rua Saldanha Marinho, 55-483207-566) is a polysexual playground for boys, girls and whatever kinky things they like to do. Mix Café (47 Centro, 55-48-3324-0102) features EDM and drag shows as well live music. Rancho do Maneca (1 Campeche, 55-48-32349295) is a meeting point of bears, daddies and their fans. Since dinner the second night is not included, you may want to check out Bar do Vadinho (305 Pântano do Sul, 55-48-3237-7305) for its reasonably
priced seafood or, if you prefer something fancier, head to Ostradamus (7640 Reibeirão da Ilha, 55-48-33375711). Located right on the beach with a pier leading out into the ocean, it’s known for the best oysters in town and huge portions. On Monday, after breakfast, the group is transported to Praia do Rosa, checking in at Pousada Casa do Ceo (Ibiraquera, 55-48-3355-6677). After check-in there’s an introduction for beginners and evaluation for more experienced surfers. The following four days feature breakfast followed by three-hour surf sessions each morning. Afternoons are left free for more surfing, shopping or relaxing at the pool. An early evening yoga session is scheduled, after which most participants gather for dinner and a night on the town. Check out Lua Marinha (Estrada Geral de Ibiraquera, 55-48-3354-0613) for incredible seafood dishes. On Thursday, Oct. 30 after breakfast
the group departs for a full-day “surfari.” The group’s leader will take participants on a tour exploring the Southern Coast of Santa Catarina, for the trip’s pentultimate surfing adventure. Then it’s on to Farol de Santa Marta, a remote fishing village where depending upon conditions, participants may also have the opportunity to interact with Southern Right Whales and Laguna Dolphins. Friday, Oct. 31, offers one final surf session, a free afternoon and a farewell dinner. The next morning after breakfast, it will be time to check out and catch a transfer back to Florianopolis airport. The package is $1,899 a person for singles and $1,429-$1,499 for double occupancy, based upon accommodations. For more details on the camp or about gay surfing in general, go to www. gaysurfers.net.
