WASHINGTON, DC—U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announded last Saturday that the federal government will recognize same-sex marriage in six new states. Same-sex couples in Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, North Carolina, West Virginia and Wyoming now will receive full federal benefits. The announcement follows the Supreme Court’s decision this month to decline to hear appeals from several states that sought to maintain their marriage bans, according to Time Magazine. Holder made a similar announcement about seven other states last week, including Colorado, Indiana, Nevada, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin. With Saturday’s announcement, same-sex couples will be recognized by the federal government in 32 states, plus the District of Columbia. “With each new state where samesex marriages are legally recognized, our nation moves closer to achieving of full equality for all Americans,” Holder said in a statement Saturday. “We are acting as quickly as possible with agencies throughout the government to ensure that same-sex married couples in these states receive the fullest array of benefits allowable under federal law,” according to Time.

BEVERLY HILLS, CA—Julia Roberts and her husband Danny Moder were given the Humanitarian Award by the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) last week at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Roberts and Moder, who are raising three children, worked on HBO’s Emmy-winning AIDS drama The Normal Heart. Roberts apologized to the “men folk” in the audience that her “hot husband” was unable to attend, according to On Top Magazine. “I totally get it,” she said. “And your hopes were placed properly.” She said that the recognition made her feel a bit like a “fraud,” because “there’s so much power and conversation that goes on in this room separate from us” and that she serves merely to point to the good works of others, according to On Top. “I want to energetically just pour my heart out to all the mothers of all the children who have ever suffered from this kind of bullying and this kind of injustice. You just want to go in there and beat the shit out of them,” she joked. “And you can’t, because then there’s the second wave of bullying.” A humanitarian, Roberts said, “is a person who brings attention to the welfare and good works of others, so in that regard we are all that.”

WASHINGTON, DC—Last Saturday, former President Bill Clinton fired up the guests attending the Human Rights Campaign’s national dinner at Washington, D.C.’s convention center, offering encouragement while reminding the crowd of his wife Hillary Clinton’s support for gay rights when she served as secretary of state. According to Politico, the former president noted his wife’s support for gay rights during her time at State, when she said that “gay rights are human rights, and human rights are gay rights.” Early in his speech, the former president also mentioned Guy Cecil, the executive director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, who is thought to be a candidate to run Hillary Clinton’s potential presidential campaign. While Hillary Clinton had a testy exchange with a National Public Radio host earlier this year over when she came to publicly back gay marriage — something she did not support in her 2008 presidential bid (nor did then-candidate Barack Obama) — her name received a warm welcome at the event, where the theme of the night was “evolve.” Bill Clinton made a note of the amount of acceptance and change that has taken place since he last addressed the organization in 1997. “One thing we have learned is no human heart is immune to an honest outreach,” he said. “No one can forever ignore their personal experience. If you ask somebody who the most conservative member of the Bush administration was, most people say Dick Cheney. But Dick Cheney was for gay marriage [and] gay rights because of his daughter [Mary Cheney is gay], because of his personal human experience.” While the mood of the night was celebratory, Clinton told the audience to stay focused on notching more wins through concerted campaigns, both legally and in the court of public opin-
ion. According to Politico, he quoted former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo, who said one should campaign in poetry and govern in prose, and Clinton said the organization needs to do both at the same time. “Campaigns, the best of them, fire idealism and spark intensity,” he said. “They exhaust and exhilarate in equal measure, and they count on the fire of inspired determination to keep them going.” Clinton also spoke of the negativity in campaign commercials and debates. “Our political season is awash [in a] blizzard of ads that don’t have a thing to do with the way people will live beginning the day after the election,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of things we could be complaining about. We should be troubled about all these problems. But they all are manageable. There is no place better-suited than we are here for the opportunities of the 21st century.” He went on to detail the path forward in language many Democrats see as elements of his own legacy — broad-based prosperity; equal opportunities for children; and tolerance. Clinton, whose daughter Chelsea Clinton just had her first child, said that “sometimes the biggest threat to the future of our children and grandchildren is the poison of identity politics that preaches that our differences are far more important than our common humanity.” According to Politico, he urged attendees to remember that shared “humanity” as the HRC takes its campaign to the heart of America’s Deep South — and to keep it in mind “when you go to Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama and the first person cusses you out.” “Do we need national security? Absolutely,” he said. “Do we need border protection? Of course. Do we have to take prudent steps against terrorists? Yes. But we will prevail in a dangerous world if we have the best model of freedom and justice, equality and opportunity, the kind of things people want to be a part of, where everybody can be who they are.”

Record Crowds Attend Volusia Pride NEW SMYRNA BEACH—It what was being billed as a record turnout, hundreds of gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgenders and their families and supporters celebrated diversity and acceptance las Saturday at the third annual Volusia Pride Festival in New Smyrna Beach’s Old Fort Park, according to the Daytona Beach News-Journal. Daytona Beach residents Debra Hamblin and Tonya Bridges, who hope to be married by 2016 in Florida, attended the festival with their daughters. “This is a no-judgment zone,” Bridges said about the festival, “We want people to see that we are an everyday family just with two girls.” The event was sponsored by Parents, Friends and Family of Lesbian and Gays, the national group’s only sanctioned gay-pride festival in Volusia County. The event featured live entertainment and informational booths from local businesses, nonprofits and several churches. “It’s important for the gay community to know that they are supported and have allies that will support issues such as job security to marriage equality,” PFLAG President
Kathy Seibert told the Daytona Beach News Journal. During the festival New Smyrna Beach Mayor Adam Barringer read a city proclamation that expressed the city’s support for the festival and the LGBTQ community at large. “This is a celebration of all lifestyles and we have a very diverse community,” Barringer said, adding that he hoped the event would send a positive message to all cities and residents in Volusia County. While the festival is not political in nature, it gave several gay-rights advocates and couples the opportunity to voice their support for the legalization of gay marriage –– a heavily debated issue in Florida that is awaiting a ruling by a U.S. District Appeals Court. In August, U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle ruled that the state’s gay marriage ban was unconstitutional but placed a stay on the decision. Hamblin and Bridges said they hope that recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings favoring same-sex marriage will pave the way for them to be eligible for the same rights and benefits as traditional couples. “If states in the Bible Belt can recognize same-sex marriage then you’d think Florida, one of the no. 1 tourism destinations in the planet, would do the same,” Hamblin said.
Bondi Defeated in Attempt to Push Same-Sex Marriage Directly to Florida Supreme Court
Florida Requiring HIV Patients on State Health Coverage to Switch to Affordable Care Act Policies
MIAMI— The 3rd District Court of Appeals in Miami indicated that it was still considering the constitutionality of same-sex marriage and refused to allow state attorney general Pam Bondi to take the matter directly to the Florida Supreme Court for adjudication. Bondi cited “great public interest in the stability” of the state’s marriage law until the appeal is ruled on. Same-sex marriage is currently legal in 32 states. The Appeal Court indicated it would rule itself on previous decisions striking down gay marriages in both MiamiDade and Monroe counties. It is widely considered that Appeals Court will give Bondi additional time to take the case to the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta, which has jurisdiction over three Southern states, including Florida. There, she may have a better chance at finding a sympathetic ear. Her maneuvers are likely to push a final settlement of the issue for Florida past the November 4 elections, thereby avoiding stirring up voter passions for Democratic candidates, who generally support same-sex marriage. The Monroe County case involved the effort by Aaron Huntsman and William Lee Jones and other gay couples in the Key West area seeking to marry. In that case, Circuit Judge Luis Garcia ruled that Florida’s ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional because it discriminates against gay couples and violates the federal 14th Amendment’s guarantee of due process and equal protection under the law. The U.S. Supreme Court recently declined to hear appeals from five states that sought to keep their marriage bans in place. The American Civil Liberties Unions, and attorneys for the couples in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties then sued to overturn the stay. If they prevail, Bondi could then go to the Supreme Court to have the cases tried collectively.
MIAMI—HIV patients who rely on state-run health programs for their lifesaving medications have been informed that they must switch to federally run insurance exchange or the state will state paying for drugs. “The landscape of healthcare has changed, and with the passage of the Affordable Care Act we have the opportunity to access and enroll in cost-effective health plans,” an official at the AIDS Insurance Continuation Program wrote in a letter to AICP beneficiaries. Yet, according to patient advocates, it is not clear that the ACA insurance plans will be cheaper — or even affordable — for those with HIV and AIDS Last yeaar, the AIDS Institute and the National Health Law Program filed a federal civil rights complaint alleging that some Florida insurers were discriminating against people with HIV by charging “inordinately high” rates for HIV medication on ACA plans.

plans that they can’t design their benefits in a way that discriminates against people with HIV.” In a statement to the Miami Herald, Aaron Albright, a spokesman for CMS, called the law’s anti-discrimination provisions “effective” and said the federal government was investigating complaints of discrimination. Smith said he wouldn’t mind switching to the ACA if he knew that plans with sufficient coverage were waiting for him. The state AICP program receives about half of its funding from the federal Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program, which helps provide medical care for about 500,000 HIV-positive people nationwide. By federal law, the Ryan White program is the “payer of last resort,” meaning many Floridians who can get cheaper coverage from another source, such as an ACA
exchange, will now be required to do so. Other HIV-positive patients will also be funneled to the exchange, including some clients of the state-administered AIDS Drug Assistance Program, which helps pay for HIV drugs for people who have low incomes or little or no insurance. The program receives 90 percent of its funds from the Ryan White program, meaning that those whose medication costs can be reduced by going onto an exchange will have to do so. Nathan Dunn, a spokesman for the Florida Department of Health, said that this year about 4,000 of the 14,000 people enrolled in ADAP will have to sign up for federal marketplace coverage. The state would be in danger of losing its Ryan White program funding if it did not move people onto the exchange, according to the Miami Herald.

Harvey Bennett, a spokesman for the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, said the state was also investigating whether the plans were “unfairly discriminatory.” Fortunately, not all insurers on the exchange are being accused of discrimination. Aetna, Ambetter and Molina placed most of their HIV drugs on lessexpensive tiers. Florida Blue, the state’s largest health insurer, listed all but one HIV drug on lower tiers requiring monthly co-pays of $10 to $70. HIV patients aren’t the only ones being impacted by the plans with high deductibles and high co-insurance models for expensive drugs According to Steven Ullmann, director of the Center for Health Sector Management and Policy at the University of Miami’s School of Business Administration, hepatitis C and multiple sclerosis patients face the same high-cost challenges Ullmann said cost-sharing presents a moral dilemma. “It’s one thing if you’re dealing with an elective pharmaceutical, but it’s another where you’re looking at drugs and treatment plans that affect one’s ability to sustain quality of life,” Ullmann told the Miami Herald. “But insurance companies are businesses, as well, and one recognizes their incentive structure: to avoid taking on too much risk.” Ullmann said companies that offered low-cost HIV drugs last year may change their behavior this year based on the plans of their competitors. “What we’re really worried about is a race to the bottom,” said Wayne Turner, a staff attorney at the National Health Law Program, which aided in filing the civil rights complaint. Turner said he fears the high-cost plans may have “skewed the market” and that in order to avoid having their risk pool burdened by people with expensive health needs, competitors may increase what they charge for HIV drugs. Turner said that with the confusion of the exchange’s launch out of the way, the time was right “for the federal government to send a strong message to

In their complaint, the non-profit groups charged that CoventryOne, Cigna, Humana and Preferred Medical were discouraging people with HIV “from enrolling in those health plans — a practice which unlawfully discriminates on the basis of disability.” The ACA prohibits insurers from discriminating against consumers because of preexisting medical conditions. The four companies all offered 2014 plans in Florida, including in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, and plan to do so again in 2015, with the exception of Preferred Medical in Broward, according to the Miami Herald. Florida has the third-highest rate of HIV infection in the nation, with Broward and Miami-Dade counties having the highest rates statewide. Almost 95,000 people in Florida have been diagnosed with HIV. Many of them have coverage for the first time thanks to the health law, activists say. But without proper regulation, high drug prices could act as a de facto form of discrimination, said Carl Schmid, deputy executive director of the Tampabased AIDS Institute, one of the groups that filed the civil rights complaint. In a statement to the Miami Herald last week, Coventry spokesman Walt Cherniak said the insurer’s 2014 plans provided access to HIV care “that follows the latest Department of Health and Human Services guidelines and evidence-based practices.” Humana, Preferred Medical and Cigna also issued statements to the Herald denying any discrimination. Humana said it places HIV drugs on its highest — and most expensive — tier because of their cost and clinical complexity. Unfortunately, the details of 2015 insurance plans on the federal exchange in Florida will not be announced until early November when open enrollment begins. HHS said the complaint, filed in May, is still under review by its Office for Civil Rights, which protects consumers from discrimination. The complaint asked the OCR to prevent the four companies from offering plans with discriminatory costs.

tep through the door at The Grand Resort and Spa and enter a world of pampered pleasure. My husband Michael and I luxuriated for three days recently over a weekend that included torrential downpours and brilliantly sunny skies. And throughout it all, we had a delightfully enjoyable staycation just five blocks from our townhouse. The Grand Resort itself is a group of refashioned Fort Lauderdale motels that have been joined front to back to form an incredibly inviting oasis from the hectic traffic at the beach. It is Fort Lauderdale’s largest gay-owned resort, situated at 539 North Birch Road, just blocks from the ocean and Sebastian Beach where boys play every day. The design at The Grand is sophisticated, and as we walked to our suite in the back of the hotel by the heated hot tub and monumental fountain, the smell of incense wafted through the air, reminding us that we were indeed in a special place. The gardens are full of flowering plants—orchids hanging from palm trees and blooming hibiscus in shades of pink and red. There is a gravel path that allows you to wonder and enjoy the immaculately pruned plantings, where you can recalculate your Zen in a matter of a few tranquil minutes. The rooms are designed for pleasure and comfort, spotlessly cleaned and freshened with fragrance just strong enough to invite you to elevate your
standards. We were shown to a large one-bedroom patio suite with a full kitchen, dining room, living room and bedroom with king-size bed—and, get this, an outdoor shower, which we utilized as our new favorite place. whatever might make your vacation extraordinary. On the dining room table sat a bowl of free munchies and water, which were consumed in minutes, truth be told. I can only imagine how welcome such a surprise is for the weary traveler, since we only motored for ten minutes and still loved the unexpected treat. The smallest rooms in the place are called Guest Rooms and cost $120 a night facing the courtyard and $150 facing the large pool near the front of the complex. They feature cool slate floors and large picture windows that optimize your view in a room that is quite large for the price and beautifully
furnished in dark rich modern. If you want quiet, opt for the courtyard with a view of the lush gardens. More into lively scenes: then the pool view is for you. It’s packed and playful. The Junior Suite (at $175) increase your space with a panty/wet bar and full size refrigerator and microwave to make meals on the go. The OneBedroom Suite ($205) adds a separate bedroom and dining area. Add a patio for $30 more (highly recommended). If the Sugar Daddy is paying, there are TwoBedroom Suites ($235) with a four-burner glasstop stove, frig and microwave, designed around a granite countertop. Want two bedrooms, twobaths for the ultimate in comfort? It’s here in a Penthouse for $340 a night, while the Grand Penthouse is on the secluded third floor with a king in one bedroom and a queen in the other. The Great Room opens onto a private outdoor living room for the ultimate in decadence. After all, the Grand Spa is the place to indulge! The Spa is a complete service center within the compound complete with massage, nail, skin and hair treatments, and adds the perfect touch to top off your royal vacation. Yes, you deserve the luxury. he is. Let’s not forget this evangelist ran for a spot on the Republican ticket as President of the United States in 1988. The one-time Baptist has little time for gays in general, let alone those having fun. He had this to say several years ago about Gay Days: “I would warn Orlando that you’re right in the way of some serious hurricanes, and I don’t think I’d be waving those flags in God’s face if I were you ... It’ll bring about terrorist bombs; it’ll bring earthquakes, tornadoes, and possibly a meteor.” This man is an embarrassment of misinformation to America and to the people who follow his evangelical teaching. He owes all of us an apology, and if he is unable or unwilling to recognize how foolish his statements have become, he should be removed from the pulpit of television.

Robertson statement and lack of remorse shouldn’t have surprised anyone, of course. This is the same man of God who last year advised his viewers that gays in San Francisco with HIV had special rings that could prink skin while shaking hands and give someone AIDS, a disease he labeled “the stuff.” Just days ago, Robertson climbed deeper into the hole of stupidity when a viewer named “John” said that while he wanted to get rich in the stock market, but he wanted to make sure he wasn’t profiting by “unbiblical means, such as the company that makes the abortion pill.” Robertson’s advice: Invest in oil and gas through master limited partnerships. And why? Because “they’re not flowing condoms through pipelines.” It would be funny if this man wasn’t serious, but

e’s the son of a U.S. Senator (A. Willis Robertson), a reformed Baptist, a highly successful business mogul, and a Republican. He founded the Christian Broadcast Network (CBN) and is the host of the phenomenally successful 700 Club broadcast live daily on the ABC Family Network. That’s the good news and the bad news. People turn to this man, a minister of God, for advice on any number of topics; and while his knowledge of the Bible may be somewhat accurate, he lives in his own world where education on HIV is concerned. Case in point: Last week on the 700 Club a viewer wrote to ask about the dangers of catching Ebola in Kenya. Robertson answered that they face no danger from the Ebola virus, “but you may get AIDS,” he said. “You’ve got to be careful. You might get AIDS in Kenya. The people have AIDS in Kenya. The towels could have AIDS.” Really? Even at 84, the grouchy grandpa of televangelism has, once again, gone too far. After three decades of research, millions of tragic deaths, and medical advances second to none, it is insult to every person living with HIV to say that sharing their towels can give you AIDS. It is not enough that CBN realized the damage such misinformation could cause. The network issued a statement that “Dr. Robertson misspoke about the possibility of getting AIDs through towels. CBN recognized the error and quickly removed the statement from the online archive. CBN recognizes the error and apologizes for any confusion.” CBN “recognized the error? Apologizes for confusion?” Dah. Pat Robertson owes an apology not only to his viewers but also all humanity as well, and should be forced to take some classes on HIV education immediately. “Pat Robertson ‘misspoke’ about contracting AIDS from towels while in Kenya. But is he really sorry?” asked former legislator and human rights lawyer Gitobu Imanyara. The citizens of Kenya are outraged, and with good reason. The 700 Club is seen daily in the country and is a ratings hit.

ible sautéed Thai pasta, bean sprouts, scallions, peanuts so tasteful! I stopped using the native utensil chop sticks and grabbed our American version, to spoon up as much of this tangy, flavorful sauce as possible. I truly cannot get enough of this dish! The other entree placed at my table was the Boneless Duck $(22.95). A very unique array of blanched vegetables in a gravy-style base poured lightly over the halved crispy duck, all of which were steamed perfectly, al dente... carrots, snow peas, celery, handful sprinkled nuts, perhaps cashews, beautifully displayed made this selection a wonderful choice! The restaurant is usually busy, so I never stay there for an evening out. Typically, we order, eat and converse, pay the check and go. I am always conscientious of other hungry diners waiting to be seated. In no way am I suggesting rushing through your meal. I am just a considerate patron. There are great drinkeries in this plaza for continued fun. Stop by Hunters Nightclub, and enjoy that atmosphere as well. And if you like, go into the club and dance off a few of those new calories.

side from the sidewalk jammed with passersby and bright security lights at the Shoppes of Wilton Manors Plaza, this incredible dining experience is worth the wait on any given weekend night. The entry is always crowded with anxious diners, entertained by the fabulous hostess with the best outfits and make-up who swiftly takes your name, and seats you once a table becomes available. The staff is friendly, attentive, and always kissing someone hello/goodbye! A large tank with all its vibrant colorful fish dominates the room, along with the lighting, music and décor. I am always compelled to sit in the middle of the restaurant where I can enjoy all aspects of this establishment. The decor is so hip and current, you might confuse this location for a swanky upscale Miami spot with edgy and stylish diners. I would consider having a private party celebrating a special event here as the setting has a club-like atmosphere. Water is served immediately as the waiter asks you what else you would like to drink. We started with appetizers from the Sushi Bar. I ordered the Beef Tataki ($10.95), a delightful portion of seared sliced steak and a ponzu dipping sauce, a tangy soy-based treat with a hint of citrus fruit, very nice. My out of town guest ordered the Tuna Tower ($10.95) which is a generous amount of chopped tuna combined with scallions, and a kimchee sauce. The red pepper flavor will enhance this dish, so order some Sake, hot or room temperature, to compliment this dish. As the busboy removes the cleanedright-down-to-the-china plates (yes, tonight we are part of that club), the waiter stands behind him with our entrees. My absolute favorite dish here at TeeJays: The Pad Thai Lobster ($31.95). This is a juicy, scrumptious and perfectly steamed Lobster, served with an incred-

23rd Annual Meeting of the Minds – Key West
Sweeney Todd – Jacksonville
COURTESY OF AMELIA MUSICAL PLAYHOUSE
Parrot heads worship at the feet of Jimmy Buffet. With over 200 clubs across the United States, they have become a strong network of devoted fans whose main mission is to enjoy life, Buffet, and margaritas. Since Key West is the island inspiring many of Buffet’s hits, the 23rd annual Meeting of the Minds brings several thousand parrot heads to the Conch Republic for a weekend full of music and a focus on charitable, environmental, educational, and humanitarian activities. Being a parrot head is as much about promoting a tropical lifestyle as it is about enjoying Buffet’s music. Various times and locations throughout Key West. 33040.
Stephen Sondheim’s Tony awardwinning musical Sweeney Todd tells the story of the demon barber of Seville—a wrongfully exiled barber who seeks revenge against the lecherous judge who framed him. Soon, though, his thirst for blood includes his customers.
A resourceful baker connects with him and, together, they concoct a new “ingredient” for meat pies. This highly acclaimed musical has been performed often and was made into a popular Tim Burton film. Unlike the film, the musical will artfully suggest violence. 7:30 p.m. Amelia Musical Playhouse. 1955 Island Walkway. Fernandina Beach. 32034.

Wicked Manors – Fort Lauderdale Wilton Manors’ annual Halloween celebration is always a racy, festive experience, with the entire Wilton Drive strip blocked off in order to let drag queens, scantily clad muscle gays, and battered leather bears run amok. This year’s festivity includes a flash mob dancing to Rick James’ classic “Super Freak.” Bar events include Village Pub’s Neil Patrick Harris look-a-like contest, Rumor’s Psycho Circus, and Bill’s Growl Freak Show. The theme of the entire night is actually “Freak Show.” Music will be provided by the Hits 97.3 FM and proceeds support vital programs and services provided by The Pride Center. 7:00 p.m. Wilton Drive. Culture in the Grove – Miami Miami has somehow grown into one of the art centers of the entire United States. With Wynwood’s popularity and the internationally famous Art Basel, Miami’s art reputation is currently flourishing. Now even Coconut Grove is in on the action with their Fashion + Art + Music (F.A.M.) nights, which continue every first Saturday of the month. These evenings include opened art galleries, trunk
shows at boutiques, and live music filling the streets. Many different local artists, musicians, and vendors will be on hand while exhibitions and activities promote fashion, poetry, and crafts. 7:00 p.m. Coconut Grove. 3300 SW 27th Ave. Coconut Grove. 33133.
Wiz Khalifa – Tampa Cameron Jibril Thomaz, better known by his stage name Wiz Khalifa, burst onto the rap music scene in 2011 with his chart-topping debut single for Atlantic Records “Black and Yellow.” Other classic singles from Cameron include “Work Hard, Play Hard” and “Remember You.” The self-professed pothead (who spends $10,000 a month on cannabis) is also known for his marriage to supermodel Amber Rose—something that is in the process of being terminated, with Amber having filed divorce papers a month ago. 7:00 p.m. University of South Florida Sun Dome. 4202 E Fowler Ave. Tampa. 33620.

America’s Got Talent Search – Tampa Much like its predecessor American Idol, America’s Got Talent helps launch the careers of different talented individuals of all walks of life. Singers, acrobats, magicians, jugglers—anyone with
a certain special gift can possibly win the national, televised competition. Before you have to square off against other finalists in front of Howie Mandel, Howard Stern, Mel B, and Heidi Klum, though, you must prove your skills during the audition stage, which happens all day today at the Tampa Convention Center. 8:00 a.m. Tampa Convention Center. 333 S. The popularity of Nirvana allowed Melvins to sign with Atlantic Records and release their own middling successful three albums. Their latest album Hold It In was released in mid-October and features two new members: Paul Leary and Jeff Pinkus of the Butthole Surfers. 8:00 p.m. The Social. 54 N. Orange Ave. Orlando. 32801.
Susan Boyle – Fort Lauderdale

Despite her emotional, breakthrough performance of “I Dreamed a Dream,” Susan Boyle was actually not the winner of Britain’s Got Talent. It didn’t matter, though— her YouTube clip made her an overnight sensation. She has already had two Grammy nominations and five albums. A few years ago, she was overwhelmed by the pressure of her fame, yet she seems ready to tackle the world again. This is her first US tour and her only South Florida stop. 7:30 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW Fifth Ave. Fort Lauderdale. 33312.

Daniel Radcliffe in “Horns”
When Bill Murray, the star of such mainstream blockbusters as “Caddyshack,” “Stripes” and “Ghostbusters” reinvented himself as an indie superstar with Sofia Coppola’s “Lost In Translation” and Jim Jarmusch’s “Broken Flowers,” it was as if he was reintroducing himself to audiences after years of being a familiar face.
T
he indie comedy “St. Vincent” (Weinstein) is in good company with “Lost In Translation” and “Broken Flowers.” Brooklyn barfly and gambler Vincent (Murray) is having a tough time. He’s overdrawn at the bank. He’s behind on paying for his Alzheimer-stricken
wife Sandy’s (Donna Mitchell) care at a facility. His house has lost considerable value and he’s deep in debt to a bookie. Things get worse when Maggie (Melissa McCarthy), a single mom and CAT scan tech in the midst of an ugly divorce from her lawyer husband David (Scott Adsit), moves in next door with her adopted son Oliver (Jaeden Lieberher ). To begin with, the drivers of the moving truck hit a tree resulting in damage to Vincent’s car. Then Vincent takes on the paid role of caretaker for Oliver when he gets home from school. That’s more conflict than the average person can withstand. But as we find out, Vincent is more than
average. In fact, he’s a decorated Bronze Star Vietnam-era war hero. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The film’s journey of discovery, taken by Oliver, is at turns wonderfully funny and terribly sad. Involving visits to the horse track, Vincent’s favorite tap and a nursing home, as well as lessons in self-defense, and time spent with pregnant Russian stripper/hooker Daka (Naomi Watts). Writer/director Theodore Melfi gets first-rate performances from his talented cast, especially young Lieberher who practically steals the movie from Murray. Supporting players are also marvelous, particularly Chris O’Dowd as Oliver’s Catholic school teacher Brother Geraghty.

ou have to give Daniel Radcliffe credit for trying. In “Horns,” directed by Alexandre Aja (“High Tension”), Radcliffe continues on his mission to put more distance between himself and Harry Potter. This time out he’s playing a young man suspected of murdering his longtime girlfriend. Ig (Radcliffe) and Merrin (Juno Temple), Seattle sweethearts since childhood, were the envy of their friends and family. Truly and deeply in love with each other, the couple seemed destined for marriage. But on the night that Ig planned to pop the question, something went terribly wrong. They argued in a diner, a scene witnessed by several people, including waitress Veronica (Heather Graham). The next morning, after going on a bender, Ig learns that Merrin has been found dead in the woods. With every finger pointing at him, Ig resolves to uncover the truth. His determination is so strong that it results in him sprouting a pair of horns near his hairline. Of course, everyone in town thinks they are a sign of his guilt, confirming their suspicion that he is the devil in the flesh. As it turns out, the horns are just a physical manifestation of the strength of his willpower. Additionally, the growths also provide him with a kind of telepathic power, permitting him to hear the innermost and darkest thoughts of those around him. This newfound gift will prove to be quite useful in his quest. Unfortunately, the revelation of the killer’s identity goes on way too long. In fact, most viewers will probably have solved the mystery a good 20 minutes or so earlier. The special effects are decent and there is some relatively tasteful gay humor involving a pair of cops. However, ophidophobes should be warned that snakes play a prominent role in “Horns.”

TRAVEL
MORE EURO FUN
A
couple of weeks ago, we looked at some of the less traveled GLBT spots in Europe you might want to explore. This week, we take a look at a couple more destinations recommended by Carlos Kytka, executive director of the Gay European Tourism Association. Milan, the second largest city in Italy, is also a major hub for fashion, design and media. With such an emphasis on fashion and media, it’s no wonder that the people of Milan are among the best looking in Italy. A visit to the clubs is like watching models on the runway. Milan has become the leading place for men’s fashions, way ahead of Paris, New York and London. To get some of the looks, head over to Via Montenapoleone, the most exclusive shopping street in Milan, where all the famous Italian and international fashion designers have their flagship stores. For art and culture lovers, Milan has notable architectural landmarks, from gothic to modern. Opera lovers must visit La Scala (Via Filodrammatici 2, 39-02-88-79-1.) It is nearly impossible to get a ticket for a performance. Sign up for a guided tour to gain access to the impressive interior. Check out the city during the Milan Gay and Lesbian Film Festival in May. As you might expect, with so much art and fashion, Milan also has the biggest gay scene in Northern Italy. There are no particularly gay areas; bars and clubs are scattered all over Milan, but you will find a few gay venues close to each other in Via Sammartini. A membership card is required for most gay bars and bathhouses. The Anddos OnePass card or the Arcigay Card will usually work at all clubs and can be purchased on site. It is about ¤ for a one month membership. When you buy the card, you need to show your photo ID; after that you only need the membership card to enter clubs. Clubbing is almost a way of life in Milan. Among the most popular GLBT events is Join the Gap at Papaya Infinity (Via Fabio Massimo 36, 39-02-
Galleria Vittorio-Emanuele II in Milan
5412-2225) on Sundays, organized by the GLBT organization CIG Arcigay Milano. Admission is ¤ 14, but that includes the extensive buffets (yes, plural!) and one cocktail. Most hotel chains have locations in Milan, but for some independent or boutique accommodations, check out Klick Hotel (Via Antonio da Recanate 2, 39-02-8724-0150), a small hotel with chic modern design, near the central railway station. Hotel Charly (Via Lodovico Settala 76, 39-02-204-7190) while not predominately gay, is gay friendly. It is unique layout, it’s actually two early 20th Century villas with a garden in between and is situated on a side road between the main shopping streets. It’s hard to believe that just a little over two decades ago, Prague was securely held in the iron fist of Communism. Now it is home to one of the most vibrant and vital GLBT communities in Central Europe. Prague has adapted a laid-back live-and-let-live attitude to
the GLBT community. Homosexual acts were decriminalized as far back as 1962. Gays and lesbians can serve openly in the military and the Czech Republic legalized registered partnerships for same-sex couples in 2006. The weather in Prague is best from early April through the middle of November. Probably the best time to visit is in August, that’s when the weather is unsurpassed and it is also the month when Prague celebrates Gay Pride and when Mr. Bear Czech Republic is chosen during a week-long festival. Most GLBT life is centered in the area known as Vinohrady, home to dozens of GLBT bars, restaurants, bathhouses and shops. Saints (Polska 32;, 420-222250-326) has become a hub for British gay expats (it’s owned by a former Brit) and tourists. Piano Bar (Milesovska 10, 420-222-727-496) serves an older clientele. Q Café (Opatovicka 12, 420-776856-3610) is a fashionable split-level with a café on the ground floor, down-
stairs there is a more lounge-like section with leather sofas. Service is friendly and the staff speaks English. There are a number of hotels in and adjacent to Vinohrady. The Arkada (Balbínova 496/8, 420-242-429-111) is a very nice gay-friendly hotel close to the city center and within easy reach of the bars and clubs of the gay scene. It is located on a quiet street and is close to the National Museum and Wenceslas Square. Residence La Fenice (Vinohradská 1183/83, 420-222-042-111) is a threestar apartment hotel located right in the heart of Vinohrady. The Claris (Slezská 26, 420-222-522 508,) also located in the center of Vinohrady, is a clean, no-frills option and is very reasonably priced. As with many of the less touristy cities we’ve discussed, Prague is relatively inexpensive when compared to cities such as Berlin. However, that may not be the case for long as more and more people discover the joys of taking the road less traveled.

HEALTH
KEEP YOUR MENTAL EDGE IN THE GYM
W
hat’s your excuse for blowing off your exercise program today? Too stressed from work? Feeling a little tired and not up to the exertion? Baby just doesn’t feel like facing the world? None of these reasons absolves you from the sin of training negligence. Getting fit and staying healthy means having no excuses. If you’re just beginning a new exercise program, or if you’ve been faithfully hanging in there with your old regime, then you are on the right track. Yet sooner, or later, everyone gets bored or tired or fed up even with habits that are good for them. That’s the point where you might be tempted to make excuses and pull back or even quit the gym entirely. Start following these tips and you’ll maintain the mental edge that will keep you in the gym feeling great and seeing results! 1. Make workouts part of your schedule. Build your workout times into your calendar and stick to these just as you would a vital business meeting or serious family commitment.
October 29, 2014
34
2. D on’t bite off more than you can chew. Many guys start out too aggressively, going too quickly to a level that’s higher than they’re capable of sustaining without injury or burn-out. Pace yourself with briefer intervals of cardio and weight-training interspersed with rest. Build from there and gradually challenge yourself to go farther and farther. 3. S et achievable goals. Sure, you want to lose fat, gain muscle, build stamina, and look like Joe Manganiello, all in one month. Well, it won’t happen, at least not all at once. If you set your sights too high, you may find yourself discounting the gains you are
making. Instead of looking too far into the future, give yourself intermediate weekly and monthly goals such as losing a pound of fat per week or lifting 10 more pounds on your bench press. Chart your progress on your phone or in a notebook as you achieve each of your goals. 4. M ix it up. Doing the same workout over and over again can get boring and your results won’t be as good as if you try a variety of exercises. Instead of doing 40 minutes daily on the treadmill, try every aerobic machine in the gym – and go biking, swimming, or hiking whenever you get a chance. Change your weight training routine regularly to keep
things interesting and break through plateaus. 5. F orce yourself to hang in there religiously for the first three months. Nothing sustains motivation better than results. Though you’ll see results early on, like increases in strength, it takes time and consistency with your routine before your body really begins to evolve and change into the machine you’ve dreamed of. Be patient. Hang in there. It takes time, sacrifice and intensity to create a real work of art. Hire a trainer if
necessary to keep you focused, on target and committed. 6. A s soon as you miss a workout, re-motivate yourself. You’ve missed one workout, so what’s the big deal about skipping another – or all of them? Before you know it, your whole program could go down the tubes. If you miss a workout, don’t beat yourself up – it’s gone, it’s over. Now it’s time to get back on track. Remember those goals and promises you made to yourself. Remember how great you felt after those first few sessions.
