Same-Sex Marriages Start in Kansas City (KMBC-TC) KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Same-sex marriages began occurring Friday in the Kansas City area after a federal judge declared that Missouri’s ban on gay marriage violates the U.S. Constitution. What makes this samesex marriage so extraordinary is that Missouri’s constitutional amendment barring gay marriage was the first by any state in the union, and approved by about 70 percent of voters in 2004.. The decision, which follows a similar one earlier this week in St. Louis, means that same-sex marriage licenses now are being issued in Missouri’s two largest urban areas. But officials across much of the rest of the state aren’t following suit, asserting that the court cases don’t apply there. U.S. District Judge Ortrie R. Smith had written Friday that he was delaying the effect of his ruling while it is appealed, but officials in Jackson County announced later in the day that they would immediately begin granting marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples. Moments later, John Kenny Rodricks and Robert Gann were married at the Jackson County courthouse in a ceremony presided over by a retired state judge with throng of media cameras surrounding them. Rodricks said the couple had initially been denied a marriage license earlier in the day. “We said, ‘Well, we’re not leaving without a wedding license today,’ and we sat downstairs in the recorder of deeds office and we didn’t move,” Rodricks said. Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders, a Democrat, said officials decided to proceed with same-sex marriages because “courts are ruling that marriage is a fundamental right of every citizen.” He added: “Sound public policy dictates that right be applied uniformly across the state.” But Missouri now has a patchwork of gay marriage policies. Officials in St. Louis city and county

began issuing marriage licenses to samesex couples after a state lower-court judge ruled Wednesday that Missouri’s constitutional ban on gay marriage violated the U.S. Constitution. But officials throughout much of the rest of the state have declined to issue licenses while following guidance from the Records’ Association of Missouri. Attorney General Chris Koster, a Democrat who has expressed personal support for gay marriage, has appealed the St. Louis court ruling to the Missouri Supreme Court. Koster said Friday that he would appeal the federal court ruling to the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. In his ruling, Smith wrote that Missouri’s gay marriage ban violated same-sex couples’ rights to due process and equal protection under the U.S. Constitution. The court finds “no real reason for the State’s decision to dictate that people of the same gender cannot be married,” he wrote. Lawyers for same-sex couples seeking the right to marry said the ruling should go into effect immediately across the state. “Each recorder of deeds can begin complying with the Constitution as it’s been interpreted by a state judge and a federal judge now, or there can be more litigation” against each county, ACLU attorney Tony Rothert said. The Human Rights Campaign, which supports same-sex marriage, said Ortrie’s ruling is the first by a federal court against a gay marriage ban in the territory of the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which covers Missouri, Arkansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota.
It comes a day after a panel of the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned lower court rulings that had struck down gay marriage bans in Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. But several U.S. appeals courts in other regions of the country have ruled in recent months that states cannot ban gay marriage. At least 30 states allow same-sex marriage, many prompted by a Supreme Court decision last month that turned back appeals from five states seeking to uphold bans. Gov. Jay Nixon, speaking at an unrelated news conference in Kansas City, deferred to Koster, but said he expects gay marriage to eventually become legal across Missouri. “The legal arc is clearly pointing that way,” he said.
Federal Judge in Mississippi to Hear Same-Sex Marriage Case JACKSON, MS--U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves for the Southern District of Mississippi will hear arguments today against the same-sex marriage ban in that state. The lawsuit was filed by the Campaign for Southern Equality on behalf of Rebecca “Becky” Bickett and her longtime partner Andrea Sanders as well as Jocelyn “Joce” Pritchett and her spouse Carla Webb. Pritchett and Webb were married in Maine in 2013. The lawsuit claims that Mississippi violates the constitution rights of the LGBT community by denying
the same-sex couples with the “rights, benefits and duties that automatically come with marriage.” Reeves was appointed to the bench by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the Senate by voice vote on December 19, 2010. A federal judge will hear arguments next week in a lawsuit that challenges Mississippi’s ban on same-sex marriage. Mississippi voted to change its state constitution to ban same-sex marriage ten years ago in November 2004.
Obama Nominee for Attorney General Welcomed by LGBT (Pink News) WASHINGTON, DC — President Barack Obama will today nominate Loretta Lynch as his new Attorney General, it has been announced. If confirmed by congress, the former attorney would succeed Eric Holder — one of the most pro-gay members of the current administration — as the country’s top law official. The role is incredibly significant for LGBT people given the wave of successful legal action surrounding equal marriage and gay rights. Mr Holder was instrumental in the decision to stop defending the Defence of Marriage Act in 2011 – paving the way for it to be struck down by the Supreme Court last year – and has weighed in on several marriage ban cases. He has more recently sought to rapidly extend federal recognition of

occur as early as tomorrow evening, if there is no postponement. The application (14A503) was filed with Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who handles emergency legal matters from the Tenth Circuit’s region, which includes Kansas. She can decide it on her own, or share it with her colleagues. This marked the first time that the same-sex marriage issue has returned to the Court since a split developed in the federal appeals courts on the power of states to ban such unions. The Kansas application made heavy use of the decision last Thursday by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, upholding bans in four states in that circuit. The text of the Sixth Circuit decision was filed along with the application; that will put it before the Justices for the first time, but it is not directly under review at this point. Appeals from the Sixth Circuit’s decision are likely to be filed later this week.. The filing attempted to show that the Kansas case is different from other cases that the Supreme Court has declined to review and refused to delay, contending that a federal judge’s decision striking down that state’s ban conflicted with a previous decision by the Kansas Supreme Court, blocking the issuance of marriage licenses. Because Kansas is located in the Tenth Circuit, and that appeals court has ruled — in cases involving two other states — that state bans are

WASHINGTON, DC — Justice Sonia Sotomayor has blocked a federal judge’s order, calling for a response by the same-sex couples to be filed by 5 p.m. (Eastern time) on Tuesday. The block came as a result of U.S. District Court Judge Daniel Crabtree striking down Kansas’s gay marriage ban last week, ruling that it would go into effect on Tuesday at 6 p.m. (Eastern Time ) if no other court intervened. The delay, temporarily preventing issuance of licenses to same-sex couples in Kansas, will remain in effect until there is a further order either by Justice Sotomayor or by the full Court, according to Lyle Denniston, blogging for SCOTUSblog, the US Supreme Court website. That response came at 4 p.m from two lesbian couples in Kansas that opposed a plea by state officials for delay. The opposing brief contended that the
new split that has developed among federal appeals courts on the controversy is no reason to change course even though the split may lead the Justices to step in to resolve the question. Justice Sonia Sotomayor continues to consider the state’s request to postpone a federal judge’s ruling in favor of same-sex marriage while the state appeals. The Justice or the full Court could act at any time. The new brief asserted that state officials in Kansas have not made any arguments for postponement that have not already been made, and impliedly rejected, by the Supreme Court in a series of orders by the Justices over the past month declining to intervene in the still-spreading controversy. The couples’ lawyers relied on the fact that, since the Justices on October 6 refused to grant review of cases from five states, bans on same-sex marriage have fallen in thirteen other states and officials in those states have stopped enforcing them. In the federal circuits where there are now appeals court decisions striking down such bans, the new filing said, only Kansas and two other states — Montana and South Carolina — are still engaged in legal battles over enforcing their laws. The state of Kansas, making a strong states’ rights claim, asked the Supreme Court on Monday afternoon to order a delay in same-sex marriages that could
unconstitutional, federal courts in Kansas are bound by that ruling. The federal trial judge who struck down the Kansas ban has ruled that his decision will go into effect as of 5 p.m. Tuesday (Eastern time), unless delayed by a higher court. The Tenth Circuit refused a state request for delay last Friday. The Kansas case has been one of the fastest same-sex marriage cases to develop. It was filed by two couples in federal court on October 10 within about an hour after the Kansas Supreme Court, in a temporary order sought by state officials, had put on hold the issuance of marriage licenses anywhere in the state. After the federal judge issued his ruling, the state’s highest court cancelled plans to hold a hearing on what to do about marriage licensing, and called for new briefs on whether it should stand aside while the federal case goes forward. The stay application filed today with Justice Sotomayor contended that the federal judge’s ruling had altered “the status quo” because it interfered with the state supreme court’s review. It argued that the federal judge’s decision amounted to “a de facto circumvention” of the state court’s power to go forward with the state case. “By disregarding the pending efforts of the Kansas Supreme Court to address the issue of same-sex marriage, the preliminary injunction order [issued by the federal judge] ignored the principle of comity,” the Kansas filing said. “No federal court should intervene to interrupt that adjudicative process.” Relying upon the Sixth Circuit’s decision sustaining four states’ bans, the Kansas application said there is now an “irreconcilable conflict” among various federal appeals courts, so “the final resolution of these important constitutional questions by this Court will certainly be required.” The application asked the Court to block the judge’s ruling while the state appeals it to the Tenth Circuit. If Justice Sotomayor does not grant a delay, the application asked that the question be referred to the full Court.

marriage to couples after victories in state courts. As same-sex marriage looks set to head back to the Supreme Court in the near future, the new Attorney General would likely be in charge of arguing in court on behalf of the administration on the issue. Mr Holder had indicated previously that he would argue in favor of nationwide equal marriage in any case, and that stance is unlikely to change under Lynch. Chad Griffin of Human Rights Campaign said: “Loretta Lynch will have big shoes to fill thanks to the incredible leadership of outgoing Attorney General Eric Holder and his unprecedented commitment to LGBT equality. “Based on her strong record on civil and human rights as a US Attorney, we have no doubt she will continue that leadership as Attorney General. We look forward to working with her to ensure equal justice under the law for all LGBT Americans.”

CIGNA Signs Consent Order to Offer Four HIV Drugs for Less TALLAHASSEE — Cigna, a global health insurance provide, decided on Thursday that it was cheaper to cap the amount consumers pay for four popular HIV drugs, Atripla, Complera, Stribild and Fuzeon at $200 per month, than it was to pay legal expenses in defense of an on-going complaint filed with the federal government accusing Cigna and three other Florida insurers of discriminating against people with HIV. (Previously the company asked consumers to pay a co-insurance of 40 to 50 percent of the drugs’ cost.) The complaint, lodged with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, said the four companies made lifesaving HIV drugs so expensive that they prevented consumers “from enrolling in those health plans — a practice which unlawfully discriminates on the basis of disability.” Cigna will also move generic HIV drugs from its specialty “tier” to a less expensive generics tier. And it will no longer require consumers to seek “prior authorization” from the insurer to refill their prescriptions. Cigna denied all wrongdoing in the consent order, which also stated that Florida regulators made “no finding” about whether the company’s practices violated state or federal law. Carl Schmid, deputy executive director of the AIDS Institute, one of the groups
that filed the federal complaint, said that the consent order was “good first step,” but said it should have gone further. “We’re glad that Cigna recognized they had problems with the way they designed their plans and how it affects people with HIV,” Schmid told the Miami Herald. But he added that the cap on out-ofpocket monthly expenses should have been expanded to include more drugs. Schmid also said that in the consent order, Cigna should offer customers a 90-day supply of its medications, rather than the minimum 30-day supply agreed to. Karen Eldred, a spokeswoman for Cigna, wrote in a statement to the Herald that the insurer had voluntarily agreed to the changes in order “to offer customers quality, affordable care.” HHS is still investigating the issues raised by the federal complaint, spokeswoman Rachel Seeger confirmed. In the consent order, state regulators said they had been provided with a copy of that complaint, which also named CoventryOne, Humana and Preferred Medical as discriminating against people with HIV. Amy Bogner, a spokeswoman for the state Office of Insurance Regulation, had no comment on whether the OIR was negotiating consent orders with the other companies or planning to pursue litigation against them. iz Molina died the day before election day a little more than two weeks ago. She had struggled with her fight against terminal cervical cancer, a particularly vicious type of the disease that had grown into her kidneys, her liver, her spleen and her abdominal wall. Liz Molina was only 35 when she died, having slowly dropped from a healthy 138 pounds to just 80 since she was diagnosed with the disease on August 26, 2013. She finally succumbed on November 3rd, in the arms of her pregnant partner Joan Rodriguez. Liz died before seeing the couple’s child born. They decided to name him Liam, and Joan is expected to give birth on November 29. Joan cherished her partner until her dying breath. But what she was unable to give to Liz was a last visit with Liz’s 13-year-old daughter, now living with her Liz’s family. They strongly disapproved of her relationship with Joan and refused visitation despite Joan’s pleas. Shame on them. “We need peace,” Joan said weeks ago to the Orlando Sentinel. “These final days we just need peace.” It would seem like little enough to ask. But in the state of Florida it is too much. Liz died without having the strength to travel to one of the thirty-two states, the District of Columbia; St. Louis, Missouri, and other jurisdictions within that state; or any of the ten Native American tribal jurisdictions, which recognize same-sex unions, and marry her beloved Joan. She died in Central Florida in our state where our newly re-elected attorney general, Pam Bondi, panders to her conservative base, and cherry-picks her legal battles. Shame on her. Yet as sad as Liz’s story is, and as pathetic as Pam Bondi remains, the dismal truth is that neither of them bare responsibility here. That discrimina-

tion continues in Florida sits squarely with the voters of this state, and primarily with those in the largely Democratic counties of Miami-Dade and Broward. Miami-Dade had the embarrassing honor of having the lowest voter turnout in the entire state. Of its 1,300,465 registered voters, only 40.67 percent voted. If just ten percent more Democratic voters in Miami-Dade had bothered to do their constitutional responsibility and vote, Charlie Crist would now be the new governor and Pam Bondi would be an unemployed joke that she is. Shame on you. Broward County, with the largest gay population in the state, was unfortunately not much higher in the vote count. Only 43.51 percent of its 1,067,083 registered voters went to the polls. Shame on you too. How can we expect to ever become the political force we have the power to be if we deliberately remain uninvolved in the very process that would give us that power? We in the LGBT community do not
ever seem to miss an opportunity to go out to the clubs and stumble around the bars in our various stages of inebriation night after night. Yet, we could not take a few minutes in all the days during which early voting was available to cast our ballots in favor of marriage and other government reform. Shame on you. I do not know how we can explain this to Joan Rodriguez who in her last letter to Liz on her dying day wrote: “[I know you] wanted so desperately to enjoy our son. I promise to teach Liam all about you. He will know his history. He will know how loved and desired he was by you. He will always know how strong and resilient you were for him and how hard you fought to be able to be here for him. I will make sure he knows that his name means strongwilled warrior and that it is a perfect representation of his family. We may not have been able to get married legally or have you adopt our son legally before you left us, but we will always be a family.” And for those of you who did not vote, explain it to me. For now, I can only say shame on you….Until next week….

Starbucks Coffees Are Flavored with the “Semen of Sodomites”

ously), both major political parties, the Tea Party, conservative radio commentator Glenn Beck, the entire U.S. Congress, Jay-Z, Cornel West, Congressman Charlie Rangel, and pretty much everyone else, especially black celebrities and cultural leaders. Last week, prior to his condemnation of Starbucks and its semen flavorings, Manning warned that there is a “catastrophic crisis of the absence of males in the home” in the African-American community, adding, “Black women are having a hard time finding black men to marry.” The reason was not that black men are shying away from marriage or that black men have a disproportionate arrest record and thus incarcerated away from their families. The real problem, according to Manning, is demons, all released into the black community by the president. “Obama has released these demons,” he explained, “particularly upon the black males.” The demons, says Manning, are homosexual. “This homosexual demon (is) hoping to enforce as many black males to subscribe to ideas that homosexual perverted LGBT as possible [sic]. So we have the outing of people like Jason Collins, who is an alleged basketball player, and Michael Sam, a football player. Two blacks that have come out of the closet and have received national acclaim from Obama, from Michelle ‘the fistbumper’ Obama, from Oprah Winfrey, from all black people encouraging more black men to come out of the closet.”

ARLEM, NY—In addition to claiming that Starbucks Coffeehouse chain was the “ground zero” for the Ebola virus, Pastor James David Manning, of the ATLAH World Missionary Church in Harlem, now alleges that the world’s largest coffee purveyor is spiking their coffee blends with the semen of homosexuals. The coffee chain has 20,737 stores in 63 countries and territories, including 11,910 in the United States. His remarks on Ebola sparked a protest by gay rights advocates who handed out free coffee from gallon Starbuck’s boxes outside his church – which then provoked Manning into another attack on Starbucks. In a video rant, Manning said: “They had a big bucket of Starbucks coffee. They said that this church is a hate church, and that I’m a hate preacher.” Citing a satirical news report, which he appeared to believe, Manning said: “Starbucks is a place where these types frequent and a lot of body fluids are exchanged there. “The thing that I was not aware of is that… what Starbucks was doing, is they were taking specimens of male semen, and they were putting it in the blends of their lattes. “It’s the absolute truth. They’re using male semen, and putting it into the blends of coffees that they sell. “My suspicion is that they’re getting their semen from sodomites. Semen flavors up the coffee, and makes you thinks (sic) you’re having a good time.” Last month, Manning claimed that Russian president Vladimir Putin planned to out Obama as a gay man by today, November 12. Putin and Obama are currently together for the Asia-Pacific Economic Conference, but no such outing seems likely. Manning has been a critic of Obama since his election insisting that the president is both “perverted” and “the son of Satan.” He’s previously hosted a woman who claimed to be a former classmate of Obama’s, and regaled his audience with tales of the president as a gay, crack-smoking hustler with many older white sugar daddies. the Fried Catfish with Fries and Coleslaw ($9.75), plated in a decorative plaid cardboard box, very fresh lightly fried and a side of homemade coleslaw, and crisp well done French fries so good that I had asked for another side. My very happy friends all shared 2 orders of Raw Oysters (MP) on the half shell, a dozen placed on a large round ceramic basket weave tray, over ice, accompanied with cocktail sauce and lemon wedges, the briny flavor of the clear oyster liquor, juicy and succulent in every shell. Perfect (since we ate them in an ‘R’ month)! The live music continued even after we paid our bill. As we walked back through the lively and packed restaurant, passing the now two-deep bar crowd, I noticed another room off to my left, which was full to capacity. As I made my way to the front door, walking past loud conversations emanating from each booth, rolls of paper towels were conveniently placed at the top of each wooden booth divider for easy access. Southport offers an extensive selection of California wines ranging from $18.-$28.00 a bottle or $5.25 by the glass and their signature Southport Wine Cooler, Red Sangria ($18.25 pitcher). When you are in the mood for a good meal, with plenty of time to make this dining experience an afternoon delight, stop by and grab yourself a beer or two, sit back enjoy the breezes and scents of the salt water, and order up your favorite fish. You will return as a regular customer. I give this establishment

t was a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon, and we were driving in the southeast end of Fort Lauderdale when it hit me--ice cold beer, waterfront atmosphere and fresh fish. Where else but Southport Raw Bar Restaurant. So we parked the car and walked into a very crowded, fully seated group of hungry diners. The wait was about 15 minutes which was fine with us, so after leaving our name we walked outside each with an ice cold Corona Light to the waterfront marina where a very cool guy was playing a jazz number. Perfect setting! The marina was busy with boaters docking to do exactly what we were there to do--order fresh fish! Also, I noticed take out dockside. Now that’s original! Casual and enjoyable, these groups of diners were all sunglassed and flip flopped, anxiously waiting for their orders to arrive. We were escorted to our table, from a pretty young girl wearing a pair of casual shorts with custom graphics printed on her tank top reminding us of where we were. We each pulled out a white plastic PVC-style chair and sat up against a matching table, and began to read the paper menus that were placed there a moment ago. The music, the marina and weather kept reminding us of how wonderful it is to be here in South Florida. We began with two orders of Conch Fritters ($6.25) which arrived in a red plastic wire basket, lined with wax paper, a generous amount of lightly battered fritters, with sides of dipping sauces, and lemon wedges--crispy, warm and spicy, with just enough to order another round of Corona Light to wash down the last bite. Next, all of us ordered Ceviche (MP), bite-sized scallops and shrimp in a cilantro base with chunks of juicy watermelon and mango served in a bowl, a side of horseradish. Very refreshing. From the seafood specialties, I ordered

Key West Film Festival – Key West The Key West Film Festival promises to showcase films that capture Key West’s essence: creativity, diversity, sustainability, and beauty. For the 2014 festival, the films include a wide selection from cinema’s top talents. 1,000 Times Good Night stars Juliette Binoche as a war photojournalist whose husband tells her she must give up the dangerous profession or lose her family. Mala Mala follows nine selfidentifying transsexuals in Puerto Rico, exploring self-discovery and activism. The Way He Looks highlights the changes facing a gay, blind teenager with the arrival of a man named Gabriel. The festival continues throughout the week. Various times and locations throughout Key West.
11/14
DMX – St. Petersburg
All the King’s Women – Jacksonville Elvis Presley was the obsession of women across the country during his heyday. Through his televised performances that mixed fierce energy with latent sexual undertones, Elvis became the de-facto figure of “rock and roll” during its earliest stages. That obsession is the focus of Luis Januzzi’s play All the King’s Women being performed at the Amelia Musical Playhouse. Through three monologues and five one act comedies, Januzzi shows the perspectives of seven-
teen different women, some enthralled, some appalled, but all obsessed with “The King.” The play is directed by Arlene Filkoff. 7:30 p.m. Amelia Musical Playhouse. 1955 Island Walkway. Fernandina Beach. 32034.
11/15
Patti LaBelle – Fort Lauderdale LaBelle began her career as lead singer of Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles, releasing the iconic disco song “Lady Marmalade.” Her solo career continued her slew of hits. Popular songs from that era include “New Attitude,” “Stir it Up,” and “On My Own.” LaBelle isn’t just a singer, though. She is also an accomplished actress, having had a recurring role on A Different World and currently gueststarring on American Horror Story: Freak Show. Accolades include two Grammy Awards, a GLAAD award, and an NAACP Image Award. Tonight she takes her big hair and big voice to the Broward Center. 8:00 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW Fifth Ave. Fort Lauderdale. 33312.

DMX is one of the best-selling hiphop artists of all time, having arrived on the scene in 1999 with his
hit album …And Then There Was X. That album spawned the single “Party Up (Up in Here).” The next decade and a half provided DMX with opportunities on all mediums: he acted in films like Romeo Must Die and Exit Wounds; he starred in his own reality show DMX: Soul of a Man; and he published his own memoir E.A.R.L.: The Autobiography of DMX. Despite recent trouble with the law, he has consistently attracted fans nationwide. 8:00 p.m. Jannus Live. 200 First Ave. N. St. Petersburg. 33701.

R&B Love Fest – Orlando It may be a faded memory, but in the summer of 2000 Sisqo’s “Thong Song” was one of the most popular songs on the radio. The butt-loving rapper will be one of the performers at R&B Love Fest, held at UCF. The headliner of the festival is Keith Sweat—the innovator of new jack swing who had hits like ”(There You Go) Tellin’ Me No Again” and “Why Me Baby.” Other performers include Dru Hill and Jagged Edge. The night promises to be both romantic and sexy. 8:00 p.m. CFE Arena. 12777 Gemini Blvd. N. Orlando. 32816.
11/16
Waiting for Godot – St. Petersburg The classic absurdist play by Samuel Beckett has been open to numerous interpretations throughout its over-fifty-year existence, including an analysis of undercurrent homosexuality between the two leads. Waiting for Godot’s nonsensical plot revolves around two men named Vladimir and Estragon who meet near a tree waiting for the eponymous character. A slave-owner and slave enter, conversing with the two men, before a messenger comes by and reveals that Godot will not be showing up. Act II follows a similar formula. 8:00 p.m. Eckerd College Bininger Theatre. 4200 54th Ave. S. St. Petersburg. 33711.

Madama Butterfly – Miami Presented by Florida Grand Opera, Puccini’s classic opera Madama Butterfly takes the stage at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. ugu Mbatha-Raw is a long way from her career-defining performance in Belle, playing the vaguely Rihanna-esque hip-hop diva Noni, in Gina PrinceBythewood’s Beyond The Lights (Relativity). Beginning at a 1998 South London talent competition where a young Noni wows the audience with an a cappella version of a Nina Simone song, only to disappoint her driven, single, stage mother Macy (Minnie Driver) with a first runner-up trophy, Beyond The Lights flashes to present day where Noni is a big winner at the Billboard Music Awards. But all is not beaming in Noni’s
world, leading her to attempt suicide on a hotel balcony. When she is saved by LAPD officer Kaz (the sizzling, and often shirtless, Nate Parker), Noni wants to make the most of her second chance. On the surface, Noni and Kaz are complete opposites, given their chosen vocations. But Kaz is also being pushed by a parent – his police captain father David – into politics, a career that has its own kind of spotlight. As you might expect, this leads to all kinds of drama for the young lovers. Far more sophisticated than any Tyler Perry production, the romdram Beyond The Lights, marks the return of Love and Basketball’s Prince-Bythewood as (original) screenwriter and director. Flashier than its hoops-themed predecessor, Beyond The Lights glows due to the talents and chemistry of lead actors Mbata-Raw and Parker, as well as Prince-Bythewood’s direction.
n Elsa and Fred, Oscar-winners Shirley MacLaine (Terms of Endearment) and Christopher Plummer (Beginners) looked like they were having a genuinely good time while making Michael Radford’s Americanized version of the 2005 Spanish film Elsa y Fred. Good for them! The truth is that both accomplished performers deserve to be in better movies than this one. Recently widowed grumpy old man Fred (Plummer) is moved into a new apartment in New Orleans by his controlling daughter Lydia (Marcia Gay Harden) and sniveling son-in-law Jack (Chris Noth). He’s not especially nice to anyone, including caregiver Laverne (Erika Alexander) or doctor friend John (George Segal), although he reserves some kindness for grandson Michael (Jared Gilman). Elsa (MacLaine), who has either an overactive imagination or is a pathological liar (depending on your point of view), lives across the hall from Fred. She is looked after by son Raymond (Scott Bakula) and taken advantage of by son Alec (Rog Rogers). Elsa, who claims to be a widow, as well as the subject of a Picasso painting, is all sunshine and lollipops, in spite of serious health issues. As you might have guessed, Elsa and Fred have a positive effect on each other, eventually becoming an item. They have a series of (mis) adventures, leading to a trip to Rome where Elsa gets to live out a Felliniesque fantasy. Nowhere near as charming or refined as the current spate of films aimed at mature audiences (see The 100 Foot Journey or The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), Elsa and Fred has more in common with a downer such as My Old Lady, and that makes it a disappointment.

on Stewart goes out of his way to prove that he has a serious side, without losing his sense of humor, with his directorial debut Rosewater (Open Road). Based on the memoir by Iranian journalist Maziar Bahari, Rosewater is a timely story of paranoia, freedom of expression and religious fanaticism. Following his coverage of the 2009 Iranian presidential elections in Tehran, including an interview he did with hot Daily Show correspondent Jason Jones, Bahari (Gael Garcia Bernal) is arrested at the home of his mother Moloojoon (Shohreh Aghdashloo) and subsequently imprisoned, interrogated and tortured for 100 days. The son of a deceased communist, Akbar (Haluk Bilginer), who was imprisoned during the reign of the Shah (and whose “ghost” visits and strengthens Bahari during his own imprisonment), and the brother of Maryam (Golshifteh Farahani), who was similarly jailed by the Khomeini regime, Bahari and his mother are accustomed to this kind of mistreatment. Bahari’s torturer Rosewater (Kim Bodnia), who regularly sprays himself with the titular scent, is determined to get some sort of confession out of Bahari, a man who doesn’t really have anything to confess. Using the limited tools at his disposal, including threats regarding long-suffering Moloojoon and Bahari’s pregnant wife Paola (Claire Foy) in London, Rosewater is as much under the gun as Bahari. Bahari sees the humor in the

HI AGAIN: MAUI WOWIE! Hawaii’s second largest island is tops with GLBT travelers 80ish degrees. Locals say, “Maui no ka oi” – “Maui is the best!” Hawaii might also be called the birthplace of same-sex marriage. In 1991, the Supreme Court of Hawaii found the state’s refusal to grant samesex couples marriage licenses discriminatory. That decision remained tangled up in the courts, then got negated by DOMA and was finally overturned last year, making Hawaii the number one spot for destination weddings. The open-minded attitude that made for the 1991 decision has long made Hawaii a favorite vacation spot for the GLBT
community, whether single or married. Maui’s GLBT community tends to be more settled and couples-oriented, and there aren’t many bars or clubs specifically aimed at the GLBT community. Many of the events, such as the monthly Rainbow Dine-Out Group are organized by Maui Pride (www. mauipride.org). Some of the LGBT
community socializes near the local beaches, south of Wailea, in Makena State Beach; there is a nude beach that is popular with gay locals and tourists called Little Beach. In our next column we take a look at GLBT travel to Molokai, Kauai and Hawaii (The Big Island).
Stay
Maui Sunseeker (551 S. Kihei Rd., Kihei, 808-879-1261), with 26 rooms, is the largest GLBT accommodation in Hawaii. Although it caters mostly to gay men, it welcomes guests of all genders and orientations. It just underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation and expansion and the adultsonly, eco-conscious boutique resort looks better than ever. Rooms feature California king beds, high-end linens, and free satellite TV and Wi-Fi. For those traveling as a group, there’s a three-bedroom penthouse with a private deck overlooking a pool. Drinks and barbecues are served poolside and staff will help book all kinds of activities around Maui. www.mauisunseeker.com
Dine
Kualapu’u Cookhouse (Uwao St. at Hwy. 470, Kualapu’u, 808-567-9655) may not look like much from the outside, but in this unpretentious dining room, or at a picnic table on the patio, you can enjoy big portions of arguably the best food on the island; burgers and loco moco to guava-barbecue kalua pork ribs and spicy-crusted grilled ahi with a cilantro sauce. This local’s favorite is BYOB and cash-only. There’s a small grocery across the street that has a surprisingly good selection of wine, but it’s only open until 6 p.m. so if you’re heading for a later meal, pick up something on the way.
Drink
Ambrosia Martini Lounge (1913 S. Kihei Rd., Kihei, 808-891-1011) is tucked inside an unassuming mini-mall in Kihei. While not GLBT oriented, it is gay-friendly and the closest you’ll find to a gay hangout on Maui. It’s most popular with the GLBT community on Sunday nights, with great happy-hour deals, and light snacks. www. ambrosiamaui.com

Pineapple Inn (3170 Akala Dr., Kihei, 808-298-4403) is in a residential neighborhood, but once you walk into the lush grounds you’ll feel like you’ve entered your own private oasis. The Inn features four private guest rooms, each containing its own private entrance, bathroom and lanai. The upper rooms have ocean and sunset views, the lower rooms have garden views. There is also a quaint bungalow available. Each room has a refrigerator stocked with breakfast foods. Tucked into the grounds is a lovely pool. www. pineappleinnmaui.com

n our last column we explored Oahu, Hawaii. This week, we take a look at Hawaii’s secondlargest island, Maui. Its breathtaking scenery and laid-back vibe have made it a popular romantic gay getaway spot, with plenty of gay friendly resorts from which to choose. The island is also a premier whale-watching destination. You can hike across a dormant volcano in Haleakala National Park. Surfing, scuba diving, snorkeling, windsurfing and parasailing are all readily accessible as well. Warm, sunny days are commonplace and it’s almost always

RAISE A TOAST TO WATER
I
t won’t be long before the holidays are upon us. Everywhere people will be partying and drinking—a lot. Whatever your alcoholic drink of choice may be, you can be sure of one thing—drinking to excess can cause all kinds of problems. Furthermore, did you know that there are over 800 calories in one Long Island Iced Tea and about 120 calories in a glass of champagne? No doubt, too many nights of partying during the holidays can leave you with a pounding headache and an expanding waistline. Why not stick with a beverage which is safe, clean and good for you? Raise a toast to good old H20! Water is the most abundant substance in your body, making up 75% of your total body weight and 90% of your blood volume. Water is essential to every one of your bodily systems—from your heart to your reproductive system. While you can survive for weeks without food, you can survive only a few days or less without water. Water is responsible for a host of important bodily functions. Temperature regulation is controlled by water. If you do not have sufficient amounts of water in your body, cooling cannot take place. Your digestive system operates with the help of water, and your joints are lubricated by this illustrious substance. Water is also responsible for the actions involved in energy production. It is essential for the digestion of food, helping your body to convert food to energy and get rid of waste. Water helps your kidneys flush out toxins. Drinking more water helps your liver metabolize fat. Water can even make you look healthy by actually making your skin look younger. Drinking more water can help you with nagging day to day problems. Bothered by food cravings even though you are eating healthy? Try drinking some water instead of grabbing for the chips or M&M’s. You may be just a little dehydrated. Feeling tired and cranky? Your body
may be telling you that you need to drink water. Troubled by constipation? Increase water consumption and you will become as regular as the daily mail. As a fitness enthusiast you need to drink at least 8-12 8 oz glasses of water a day. It is recommended by The International Sports Sciences Association that you consume plenty of water daily, especially 20 minutes before working out and following high carbohydrate meals. Don’t wait until you are thirsty before drinking water. By the time your body reaches
that point, you’re already dehydrated. Here are some tips on how to uptake. Have a tall glass of water when you get up each day. Try to drink 4 oz of pure water every hour throughout the day. Prepare for exercise by hydrating with water before you begin your work out. Sip water while exercising to replace what is lost as you perspire in order to keep up your energy level. I always prefer water as opposed to other sports
drink that are heavy in sugar and corn syrup. You can, however, add a small amount of juice to flavor it up if you get bored. Finally, make sure your water is pure. Bottled water can be a little expensive. Today, there are a number of water purification systems available for home and public use. Charcoal is often used as a purifying agent in water and a simple filter can be installed on any kitchen faucet.
