NATION Judge Overturns Michigan’s Ban on Same-Sex Benefits for Public Workers LANSING, MI — The Sixth Circuit may have upheld Michigan’s ban on same-sex marriage, but some same-sex couples still have something to celebrate this week. A federal judge ruled Wednesday that the state’s law banning the same-sex partners of public employees from receiving benefits is unconstitutional, according to ThinkProgress. The law in question was passed just back in 2011. It specifically infringed on municipalities that were already providing benefits to the same-sex domestic partners of city employees. Five couples whose benefits were cut by the law’s passage filed the complaint that led to this decision. Judge David Lawson, a Clinton appoin-

icky Boone Casting is conducting a regional search in New Orleans, Atlanta, Orlando, Tampa, Miami and all Southern stops in between for Drag Queens to play lead roles in an upcoming HBO pilot. This show, Mamma Dallas, is created by Mike White (Enlightened, Chuck & Buck,School of Rock.) Currently Seeking: LIBERTY BELL (LEAD): Male, 30s, open ethnicity. Liberty appears to be an attractive, sexy woman with a flirty side — but she’s not, really. Born Albert De Lorio, Liberty is a drag queen with an ebullient, chatty, upbeat personality, but she leads an unpleasantly seedy life… a life that

tee, pointed out that the marriage rulings are not relevant in this case because “this is case is not about marriage.” Rather, he wrote, it has to do with whether a state “may adopt a narrow definition of family, and pass laws that penalize those unions and households that do not conform.” Only public employees with same-sex partners are impacted by the law, he explained, and it imposes a significant financial burden on them by cutting their benefits. The state argued that the law “demonstrates a preference for marriage,” but Lawson was not at all persuaded. “It is curious,” he noted, “that the defendant claims to promote marriage by enacting restrictions that fall most heavily on a discrete group that cannot marry under law. The defendant, in essence, justifies discriminating against a group by noting that the law promotes the interests of the group’s counterpart. That is no justification at all. Discrimination against one group cannot be justified merely because the legislature prefers another group.” she plans to turn around with a little re-invention and identity theft. If cast, compensation will be on the scale of professional actors. If you fit the above description and are interested in auditioning for the role, the casting agent encourages you to email pictures to vbcfeatures@gmail.com with the subject title “Mamma Dallas.” Please include name, drag experience, best contact info, and city of current residence. Shooting for Mamma Dallas begins in March 2015. Vicky Boone did regional casting for such films as The Tree of Life (starring Brad Pitt), Ain’t Them Bodies Saints (starring Rooney Mara), Parkland (Starring Paul Giamatti), Men, Women, and Children (starring Adam Sandler), and Richard Linklater’s upcoming That’s What I’m Talking About.

Lawson also countered the state’s claims that the law would save money, noting it may actually cost Michigan money. Not only will employees no longer pay state income tax on the benefits they received, but they may instead rely on Medicaid or other government-sponsored health care programs in lieu of insurance. Likewise, local governments save money when they can recruit and retain employees by offering benefits otherwise only available in the private sector. The law was ruled unconstitutional and the state was permanently enjoined from enforcing it.

Republicans Weakening Their Opposition to Same-Sex Marriage WASHINGTON, DC — Religious leaders are finally softening their antigay marriage stance in light of what they envision is a lost cause as a result of recent court victories within the LGBT community. According to a recent interviews conducted by CNN with about a halfdozen prominent evangelicals, not one listed opposition to gay marriage as their top priority. The leaders said they’re more focused on protecting religious liberties as same-sex marriage becomes legal in a growing number of states. “Is it time to differentiate between religious ceremony and civil ceremony?” Jim Daly, the president of Focus on the Family, said in an interview with CNN. “Civil ceremony to the Christian community is no different than getting your car registered.” Republications, sensing a no-win situation are largely ignoring the issue, even as they prepare to take over control of the U.S. Congress in January as are most of the leading potential GOP contenders for the 2016 presidential nomination. “There is a recognition that while the fight should not be given up on upholding the several thousand-yearold definition of marriage, the courts are probably very quickly going to undo that,” said Erick Erickson, a

conservative pundit and editor of RedState.com. “Behind the scenes, a lot of evangelical leaders inside and outside of politics are laying the groundwork for religious liberty and conscience protections.” The new push by the Republican party is to encourage more youth and minorities to get involved, and the quickest way to accomplish that goal is by showing change, including an openness to gay marriage. Of course, there’s still plenty of opposition to same-sex marriage among Republicans. And the issue is a big fundraising motivator for the party and its allies. Vincent Harris, a 26-year-old digital strategist who’s worked for evangelical favorites like Ted Cruz and Mike Huckabee said social issues including gay marriage “remain very potent to the Republican electorate,” according to CNN. Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage, dismissed talk of an evangelical shift as a “joke notion.” “People are still charged up about this,” Brown said. “There’s not been enough standing up for marriage especially in the wake of what is essentially a constitutional crisis.” Daly, whose daily Focus on the Family radio broadcast reach more than 2.9 million listeners weekly, is nowhere close to endorsing same-sex unions and insists that the legalization of gay marriage in the U.S. isn’t a “fait accompli.” But his vision for the evangelical movement is focused on reaching out to, rather than attacking or rejecting, other segments of society---what he calls taking a “gracious attitude.” He frequently mentioned his “friends in the gay rights community.” One of those friends is Ted Trimpa, a prominent gay activist and Democratic strategist. The two struck up an unlikely friendship after Daly reached out to Trimpa’s office about two years ago to team up and fight child trafficking in their home state of Colorado. They see their bond as an example of where the dialogue is heading, through Trimpa said “people faint when they see us together.” “With Jim, it’s a new day,” Trimpa

Kirk Cameron Accuses Bill Cosby of Rape

Mississippi to Test Gay Marriage Ban JACKSON, MS--U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves for the Southern District of Mississippi will hear arguments against the same-sex marriage ban in that state. The lawsuit was filed by the Campaign for Southern Equality on behalf of Rebecca “Becky” Bickett and her longtime partner Andrea Sanders as well as Jocelyn “Joce” Pritchett and her spouse Carla Webb. Pritchett and Webb were married in Maine in 2013. The lawsuit claims that Mississippi violates the constitution rights of the LGBT community by denying the same-sex couples with the “rights, benefits and duties that automatically come with marriage.” Reeves was appointed to the bench by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the Senate by voice vote on December 19, 2010. A federal judge will hear arguments next week in a lawsuit that challenges Mississippi’s ban on same-sex marriage. Mississippi voted to change its state constitution to ban same-sex marriage ten years ago in November 2004.

AGOURA HILLS, CA–Another rape allegation has surfaced against famed comedian and actor, Bill Cosby. This time it is from another familiar 80s face: Kirk Cameron. Kirk Cameron, actor and Christian-activist, who rose to fame on the hit television sitcom Growing Pains, revealed to TMZ subsequently circulated by Celebricity.com) that he too had been drugged and raped immediately after auditioning for a recurring guest role on “The Cosby Show.” Cosby wanted to “whiten up the show a bit” and Kirk Cameron was tossed around as somebody who could play a French foreign exchange student. His lawyer gave an announcement on Cameron’s behalf to the press. Following is an excerpt:

“…I’ve seen so many brave women come forward and I feel it’s time as a caring and honest man to come out and say, Cosby not only raped women, but men, at least this man. I am tired of the media worshipping and praising a man that has a past so terrible that it is unbelievable. I have kept this terrible secret for years, but the incident was also a major factor in what led me to Jesus. I wish I had come out sooner, but it’s tougher for men as our masculinity can get called into question when we are sexually assaulted by another man. Why wasn’t I strong enough to fight Mr. Cosby off? Is he a stronger and more physical man than I? I hope I can help other men come out and together we can stop this devil. I will be pursuing damages that are not going to be disclosed at this time.” On Tuesday, Cosby’s attorney, John Schmitt, issued a statement saying Cameron is simply trying to revive his failed acting career. Schmitt also said the fact that there are allegations by Cameron “does not make them true.” But this particular accusation is interesting. We have a very successful Christian-activist and Christian actor who doesn’t need any press or financial reward, which does cast a shadow of guilt over Cosby. Cosby has never been criminally charged with sexual assault, but he did settle a civil case in 2006 brought by Temple University employee Andrea Constand who claimed he drugged and groped her at his suburban Philadelphia mansion. What makes the Cameron allegations

ing to a new generation of voters,” said Hoover, who is also a CNN political commentator. Hoover runs the American Unity PAC, which spent more than $4 million in the 2014 cycle to support pro-gay marriage and LGBT rights Republican candidates, according to the group’s pre-election Federal Elections Commission filing. The GOP could see at least one progay marriage presidential candidate in the 2016 elections if Sen. Rob Portman — who has a gay son and endorsed same-sex marriage in 2013 — decides to seek the party’s nomination..

different is that while he was given the customary glass of wine and pill (the recurring theme in all the Cosby sexual assault charges), he did not pass out like the others. After the wine, Cameron felt a sudden attraction to Cosby, his inhibitions became lost and he became an active participant in the abuse. Cameron’s legal defense believes he was given “Spanish Fly” which is an aphrodisiac drug Cosby had often joked about in standup routines. The drug alters the brain, making the user sexually receptive and excited. Cameron would not go into detail about what happened during “The Cosby Show” audition, and hopes to keep the despicable details out of the public press. Cameron urges fans to pray for him and the sexually assaulted women. Cameron is currently starring in Saving Christmas, a comedy distributed by Samuel Goldwyn Studios that premiered on November 14, 2014.

said. “The reality of it is gays aren’t going away and evangelicals aren’t going away so we’re figuring out common ground,” he told CNN. Russell Moore, the president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, is also advocating for a more open approach and has called for Christians to “love your gay and lesbian neighbors.” “If we don’t recognize (the culture shift), we’re clueless as to what is happening,” Moore said in an interview. Matthew Vines, meanwhile, is an openly gay evangelical who recently published a book attempting to debunk Biblical interpretations that define homosexuality as a sin. He went to a conference sponsored by Moore’s group in October and was surprised that even his staunchest critics constructively interacted with him. He said he would have been “completely ignored” at the convention five years ago. “There’s definitely a coming divide between evangelicals, but it’s not public yet,” Vines said. “Over the next year in particular, people will start to show their true colors.” Statistically, about 43% of white evangelical millennials support samesex marriage, according to a 2014 Public Religion Research Institute poll, while 7 in 10 white evangelicals overall oppose same-sex marriage. The generational split is even more pronounced among the GOP: nearly two-thirds of Republicans under 30 favor same sex marriage compared to 39% of all Republicans, according to the Pew Research Center survey. GOP leaders are eyeing those polls closely and in the last two years, four Republican senators have announced their support for same-sex marriage. This year, the GOP fielded two openly gay Republican candidates for Congress -- though neither won. Some, like Republican strategist and LGBT activist Margaret Hoover, say the party is changing too slowly and needs to put its opposition to gay marriage to rest. “I think the fact that the majority of Republicans don’t support same sex marriage or LGBT freedom is detrimental to reaching out and connect-

WORLD AIDS DAY MONDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2014 WHAT IS WORLD AIDS DAY? World AIDS Day is held on 1 December each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day, first held 26 years ago in 1988.

NATIONAL OVERVIEW • Currently, 1.1 million people are living with HIV in the United States (an estimated 1,144,500 adults and adolescents), and nearly one in six of those (16 percent) are unaware of their infections. • Despite increases in the total number of people living with HIV in the United States in recent years, the annual number of new infections has remained relatively stable overall. •H owever, HIV infections continue at far too high a level, with approximately 50,000 Americans becoming newly infected with HIV each year. •M ore than 15,000 people with AIDS still die each year in the United States.

10

HEAVILY AFFECTED POPULATIONS • By Route of Transmission •M en Who Have Sex With Men (MSM) • By risk group, gay and bisexual men of all races remain the population most severely impacted by HIV:

November 26, 2014

SPECIAL FEATURE

– MSM represent just 2 percent of the U.S. population, but account for 63 percent of all new HIV infections in the United States each year, as well as more than half of people living with HIV (52 percent). – The number of new infections among the youngest MSM (aged 13–24) increased 22 percent, from 7,200 infections in 2008 to 8,800 in 2010. Young black MSM continue to bear the heaviest burden, accounting for more than half (55 percent) of new infections among young MSM (4,800). – White MSM account for the largest number of annual new HIV infections of any group in the United States, followed by black MSM and Hispanic MSM. – The rate of new HIV diagnoses among MSM in the United States is more than 44 times that of other men (range: 522–989 per 100,000 MSM vs. 12 per 100,000 other men), and more than 40 times that of women (13 per 100,000 women).

• Heterosexuals and Injection Drug Users: •H eterosexuals and injection drug users also continue to be affected by HIV:

– Individuals infected through heterosexual contact account for 25

percent of annual new HIV infections and 26 percent of people living with HIV. – Injection drug users represent 8 percent of annual new HIV infections and 16 percent of those living with HIV.

•B y Race/Ethnicity

– African Americans: Among racial/ethnic groups, African Americans face the most severe burden of HIV and AIDS in the nation: - While blacks represent approximately 14 percent of the U.S. population, the latest CDC estimates show that they account for almost half of all new infections in the United States each year (44 percent) as well as almost half of all people living with HIV (44 percent). - At some point in their lives, approximately one in 16 black men will be diagnosed with HIV, as will one in 32 black women. -T he rate of new HIV infections for black men is more than six times as high as that of white men, and more than two times that of Hispanic men and of black women. -C omparing 2008 to 2010, new HIV infections among black women decreased 21 percent (from 7,700 to 6,100); however, black women account for the vast majority (64 percent) of all new infections among women overall and the HIV incidence rate for black women remains 20 times as high as that of white women, and almost five times that of Hispanic women. - HIV infections among blacks overall have been roughly stable in recent years. – Latinos: Latinos are also disproportionately impacted: - Hispanics represent approximately 17 percent of the population and the latest CDC estimates show that they account for 19 percent of people living with HIV in the United States, as well as 21 percent of new infections each year. - A t some point in their lives, approximately one in 36 Hispanic men will be diagnosed with HIV, as will one in 106 Hispanic women. - The rate of new HIV infections among Hispanic men is almost three times that of white men, and the rate among Hispanic women is more than four times that of white women. - HIV infections among Hispanics overall have been roughly stable in recent years.

Florida Remains Among Only 15 States Where Same-Sex Marriage Remains Illegal

In what is now a very small circle, Florida, Arkansas, Missouri, and Texas remain the last states which are appealing federal circuit court rulings that have overturned the various states’ bans on same-sex marriages. On November 14, 2014, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi filed an appeal to the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, which while ruling in favor of same-sex marriage placed a stay of executive on issuing marriage licenses pending appeal. Bondi is a Republican. Last Thursday, November 20, 2014, the United States Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit heard arguments on a hearing to end the same-sex marriage ban in Arkansas from that state’s Attorney General Dustin McDaniel, with a decision still pending. McDaniel is a Democrat. On November 7, 2014, U.S. District Court Judge Ortrie D. Smith ruled in favor of the freedom to marry in a federal case from Missouri. Shortly after the ruling, Missouri Attor-

ney General Chris Koster said that he would appeal the decision to the United States Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit, the same court hearing the Arkansas appeal. Koster is a Democrat. On February 26, 2014, a federal judge in Texas ruled in favor of samesex marriage. The decision was quickly appealed by Gov. Rick Perry and Attorney General Greg Abbott to the U.S. Court of Appeals to the 5th Circuit. Both Perry and Abbott are Republicans. On September 3, U.S. District Judge Martin Feldman in Louisiana became the first federal judge since June 2013 to uphold marriage discrimination in this federal case seeking the freedom to marry and respect for marriages performed in other states. A federal challenge to the state’s anti-marriage amendment has been appealed to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals. In Nebraska, North and South Dakota, advocacy groups are working toward fairness for all by attempting to overturn constitutional amendments that prohibits relationship recognition for same-sex couples in the state. In Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia, same-sex marriage supporters are continuing to speak out in favor of equality, working to overturn antimarriage laws so that all same-sex couples can share in the freedom to marry. In 4 states (Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee), marriage supporters are seeking review from the U.S. Supreme Court of an out-of-step promarriage ruling from the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals. In Missouri, the marriages of samesex couples legally performed in other states are respected. In 35 states — Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Utah, Virginia, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming, plus Washington, D.C. and some counties in Missouri, same-sex couples have the freedom to marry.

ORLANDO, FL – Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and the City of Orlando announced that the City has obtained the highest score of 100 on the 2014 Municipal Equality Index (MEI), a nationwide evaluation of 353 cities on how inclusive the city’s laws and policies are for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. Orlando is one of the few major cities in the country to obtain the top score of the MEI. “This perfect score demonstrates the progress our community has made and validates our commitment to have an inclusive government that promotes diversity throughout the establishment of policies and procedures that benefit all sectors of society, including the LGBT community,” said Mayor Buddy Dyer. “I am proud of this accomplishment as we continue attracting talented people from different backgrounds to strengthen our economy.” The MEI is conducted by the Equality Federation Institute and Human Rights Campaign Foundation and examines 353 cities from every state including 50 state capitals, the 150 largest cities in the United States, the three largest cities or municipalities in each state, the city home to the state’s largest public university and 75 cities and municipalities that have high percentage of populations of same-sex couples. The MEI team evaluates cities on the following criteria: Non-Discrimination Laws, Relationship Recognition, Municipality as Employer, Services and Programs and Relationship with LGBT Community. “I am delighted that the City of

Orlando is so committed to equality. This year’s index is a reflection of that commitment,” said District 4 Commissioner Patty Sheehan. Under the Mayor’s leadership, the City of Orlando has focused its efforts on supporting our local LGBT community, including, but not limited, to: • S ame-sex Domestic Partnership benefits for City workers: Since 2009, the City offers domestic partner health benefits, legal dependent benefits and equivalent family leave. •D omestic Partnership Registry: Approved by the Orlando City Council in December 2011, the ordinance created the City’s first-ever Domestic Partnership Registry. Since then, 13 other Florida jurisdictions have used the City of Orlando’s registry as a model. Currently, 1,321 couples have registered on the registry. • Support of marriage equality in court briefs: In June 2014, the Mayor and City Council authorized the filing of amicus curiae (friend of the court) briefs in support of marriage equality in several Florida cases trying to overturn the Florida same-sex marriage ban. •G ender Identity added to Antidiscrimination Chapter 57: This summer, Chapter 57 Review Board, unanimously recommended to our City Council that gender identity be added as a protected class. City Council unanimously approved an ordinance adding gender identity on August 11, 2014. •G ender Identity added to City employment policies: The City recently added gender identity to its Recruitment & Employment and Harassment policies and procedures. •N on-discrimination ordinance added to Anti discrimination Chapter 57: As referenced above, the City of Orlando has had a non-discrimination ordinance and related City board since 1973 charged with fostering equality in Orlando and it continues

to be active in promoting the City’s recent equality initiatives. •F unds for the homeless & HIV/ AIDS: Through our City of Orlando Housing Department, Orlando provides funding through its Housing Opportunities for People with Aids grants for both homeless and elderly LGBT people as well as specific supportive programs for people living with HIV/AIDS. •N ew LGBT liaisons appointments: The City has also established a formal liaison positions at the Mayor’s office and Orlando Police Department (OPD). Mayor Dyer designated Luis M. Martinez, Director of Multicultural Affairs, as his Liaison for the LGBT community. Moreover, Lt. James Young has been appointed by Chief Mina in this new OPD role.

“Tomorrow the World,” a multi-media piece by local artist Ed Stevens recognizing gays in the military, will be exhibited during International Art Week/Art Basel Miami 2014 (December 3-7). Part of Stevens’ ASK, TELL! series, “Tomorrow the World” depicts soldiers marching in the colors of the gay rainbow flag around a world globe. While “Tomorrow the World” expresses a positive vision in celebrating the end of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, Stevens feels it also constitutes a warning that conformity may be the dark side of acceptance.

TRANSGENDERS ARE PEOPLE TOO

T

he nationwide fingerprint of transgenders got an enormous boost last week with the declaration by U.S. Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen that her son, Rodrigo, was actually born as her daughter Amanda. And Amanda he remained until 2007 Laverne Cox when he began his transition process. Much was made of the announcement, including an exclusive interview on the local CBS affiliate in Miami, which broke the story. It was full of compassion and education, with Ileana and her husband Dexter Lehtinen (who were married in 1984) openly supporting their son. “As parents we wanted to make sure Rigo understood we were totally fine with it. We wanted to make sure he was safe. Our society is sometimes not inviting and not caring enough and there is no mystery that LGBT kids when they are younger are bullied,” Ros-Lehtinen said. “Totally fine,” perhaps. But not always. Back in 1996, Ros-Lehtinen voted in favor of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). She was hardly alone. DOMA passed both houses of Congress by large, veto-proof majorities and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton in September 1996. Eventually, however, Ros-Lehtinen became the only Republican to vote for its repeal. That was in 2009, two years after her son’s effort to transition. As with many Republicans, it takes a personal experience, often with family members, to reverse feelings about transgenders in particular and the LGBT community in general. Rodrigo said of his mother: “I think she’s genuinely a good person, she may be Republican and I may not be, but she cares about people enough and the tide of history is going so much in that direction.” Ros-Lehtinen seconded that opinion by giving advice to other parents that

face the situation where a son or daughter comes out as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. “Don’t freak out, stay calm and don’t be afraid. Love your child because that person is your child whether it’s the person you wanted him or her to be or not. That’s my advice to parents, never, never reject your child. That’s unconditional love no matter what.” What remains obvious is that while Ros-Lehtinen is now sincere in her beliefs in favor of gay and transgender rights, she was equally sincere in her opposition to them earlier. That she is the only Republican in Congress to vote for repeal of DOMA remains a pathetic reminder of just how out-of-step with history the majority of her fellow party members are. It seems that since the Supreme Court voted to declare DOMA unconstitutional in June 2013, Republicans have been largely silent on the entire issue of same-sex marriage. Logically, it is a safe course in an effort not to upset the Republican ultra-conservative base, who find nothing to cheer about in the dozens of state and federal court cases that have followed the Supreme Court ruling and found same-sex bans to be unconstitional. Republican candidates who continue to toe a hardline anti-gay marriage line may be at risk of losing credibility among a growing proportion of voters. Ditto those who look upon transgender individuals as oddities and unnatural, and the strident religious community who feel the same way. Silence is no longer an option for Republicans, no more than it is for Tea Party members. By disenfranchising transgender men and women, you fail to acknowledge what strength of character and purpose these brave people are. percent found it permissible for lesbians to have the same rights. Doan and his co-authors chalked this discrepancy up to two possible factors. For one, they speculate it could reveal a last-ditch attempt for heterosexuals to wield some continuing power over a minority group. “Indeed, as some forms of structural discrimination are prohibited, informal privileges might become more important as a way for dominant groups to justify inequality on more subtle grounds,” the authors wrote. In the same way people’s racism has changed from the overtness of a racial slur to the subtlety of profiling, today’s social inequalities are beginning to slip undercover. Or perhaps the implications of the study are far simpler: straights are simply not used to seeing gay people kiss in public, and until such a time as they do, the thought of the sight makes them uncomfortable in theory. “I think for heterosexual couples, these informal privileges are taken for granted,” Doan told Medical Daily. Across the board, straight respondents approve of straight public displays of affection. They see it,

they accept it, and it has long been an acceptable form of behavior. While those in the LBGT community often may see lesbians and gays kissing inside clubs and private venues, even they find the openly public display of physical affection to be somewhat disconcerting, if only for its rarity. Handholding seems to be less offensive, as is walking arm in arm, since these are more casual, less intimate forms of endearment. “When people see these scenarios,” Doan said, “it’s sort of like they’re thinking why is this even something we’re asking about?” The LGBT community wants nothing less than have the very question become irrelevant. Currently, it is anything but. If anything, that’s all the gay rights movement has ever asked for: a sense of normalcy. The research paper “Formal Rights and Informal Privileges for Same-Sex Couples: Evidence From a National Survey Experiment” was released in the American Sociological Review last week.

ame-sex marriage, yes; kissing in public, no. Or so says a new study just released by the University of Indiana last week. The first major study of its kind, the research paper which polled over 1,000 heterosexuals over a period of a year, found that while people may support legal rights for minority groups in the privacy of a voting booth, they don’t always extend the same level of acceptance out in public. As an avalanche of legal victories in the courts across the country validates the rights of the LGBT community to marry each other (currently 32 states and the District of Columbia allow such unions), America is undergoing a major social movement the likes of which is unprecedented in the history of the country. By comparison, in 1958, a Gallup poll taken at the time suggested that 94% of respondents disapproved of interracial marriage at the time. It took over 40 years for that opinion to shift. The social shift on same-sex marriage has been considerably quicker—less than half that time. Yet, according to the study lead by University of Indiana sociologist Dr. Long Doan, while heterosexuals ideologically may think that gays should have the right to marriage, adoption and benefits including hospital visitation, they draw the line at public displays of affection routinely granted to straight couples. “Support for legal benefits for gays and lesbians should not be conflated with favorable attitudes toward same-sex couples in general,” said in a statement. “We come to the conclusion that although heterosexuals may be increasingly willing to grant legal benefits to gay and lesbian couples, entrenched prejudice that takes on subtler forms may remain.” The results from the study found that while 95% of people think that a straight couple kissing on the cheek in public is fine, just 72 percent said the same for lesbians, and 55 percent for gay men. Worse still was the percentage that thought gay men deserved inheritance rights—69%, while 73%

ket medium rare, lettuce tomato (hold the onions on both) with havarti, choice of several cheeses, on a fresh warm brioche bun. Served with a heaping helping of shoestring fries. Nice. The other orders arrived with the burgers--Beef Carpaccio ($16). This is a thinly sliced beef tenderloin doused with micro cilantro, mint shaved red onion, sprinkled with spiced peanuts in a N??c ch?m sauce--an extract of an ambercolored liquor from the fermentation of fish. A Vietnamese delicacy, indeed. Slow Braised Short Ribs ($28) served with a colorful array of pickled red onion, diced tomato herb salad with a red wine reduction. As presented on a crisp white dinner plate, this entrĂŠe is a winner, all around. The beef literally broke apart with each forkful. Tender, moist and seasoned perfectly. Additionally, I ordered two sides of Mac and Cheese ($5) for the table. A must. Truly speaking. It is that good! Several imported cheeses masterfully blended to create a creamy, gooey sauce covering large elbow size macaroni, browned and served piping hot. Take some home, to reheat. It is just as good the next day! Freshly brewed coffee around the table with the check please. Once we got up, we toured the outside bar, with upbeat jazz music playing. The grounds are exceptional, crisp green turf, semi-private cabana-style wicker cage seating, lighted palm trees and that never-ending view. On a cooler evening, ask for the fire pit to be lighted. What a romantic ambience! By boat, there is plenty of dock space, 340 feet of it! The restaurant offers late-night dining on Friday and Saturday until midnight. A

cloudy rainy day is never the best time to sit at any waterside restaurant, but if you have not been to the newly renovated Shooters Waterfront in East Fort Lauderdale, anytime is worth this dining experience. Arriving at the valet with a few short steps to the hostess stand to your left and spectacular Intracoastal views straight ahead, you will immediately feel the vibe of what will become a fantastic afternoon or evening. The main room, artfully filled with contemporary fabric wall coverings and chandeliers, softly surrounds two completely new, happily occupied bars-the lower of which depicts more of an innovative upscale semi-sports bar with large TV screens. We chose an inside waterfront woodgrain Formica four-top table with synthetic weave table mats and coordinating upholstered pull up chairs, which was surrounded by well-designed high back booths, large shaded chandeliers reflecting the soft tones of taupe colored walls, and accents throughout. Either seating choice assures that you have an incredible view and a good time. Completing the amazing transformation is a fresh new menu and some very unique drink specials. The wine list is extensive as is the domestic and imported beer selection. This is for sure a favorite and I have yet to describe the food! Our server Keith walked over and (quite frankly to my surprise) extended a warm smile along with his hand to greet each one of us individually. Rare and unnecessary (yet refreshing at the same time), his genuine and friendly personality overwhelmed his strong approach. We were pressed for time (as two out-of-town guests had a plane to catch within hours), so we ordered a round of Absolut on the rocks with a splash of cranberry, and drank while discussing the near-future plans of my new Floridian real estate clients. We hurriedly ordered so that we would be served in a timely manner as we were seated with a very busy dining crowd. Two of us ordered the Shooter Burger ($16)--a juicy short rib chuck blended bris-

Thanksgiving Cruise, Christmas Tree Lighting & Leather Mask Ball White Party November 29th in Miami

11/27

Thanksgiving Dinner Cruise – Tampa Cooking a Thanksgiving feast requires so much time and energy that, perhaps, a traditional family celebration is less inviting than dining on a luxurious yacht, floating on the water. The cruise’s meal includes upscale traditional favorites such as slow roasted turkey with sage pan gravy, candied sweet potato and pecan mash, green beans almondine, and more. There will be a DJ and cash bar. These cruises often sell out so make reservations and secure your spot. 12:00 p.m. Yacht StarShip. 603 Channelside Drive. Tampa. 33602.

Leather Masked Ball – Fort Lauderdale The premiere annual dance party and charity event of South Florida’s Leather Community, the Leather Masked Ball, was the brainchild of Ira C. Smith and Eric Lawrence way back in 2006. Since then, the Leather Men’s Brotherhood has acquired the ball, building upon its tradition. Proceeds from this year’s event help support The Pet Project, Tuesday’s Angels, The Pantry of Broward, and The Leather Archives and Museum. DJ Brian Norwood will be spinning a night titled Cellblock 9. 9:00 p.m. Bill’s Filling Station. 2209 Wilton Drive. Wilton Manors. 33305.

The White Party – Miami The annual HIV fundraiser takes place at the Perez Art Museum this year. A 56-foot-tall energy-efficient artificial tree with 270 ornaments and over 78,000 L.E.D. lights light up the downtown area. There is also an interesting 10-minute, synchronized light show to various selections of holiday music—something that will continue daily until New Year’s Eve. With so many people in attendance, the event is expected to be standing room only. Guests are encouraged not to bring chairs. 7:00 p.m. The Jacksonville Landing. 2 Independent Dr. W. see Williams and “white boy fever.” Promising to never “get hung up on one of those boy-boy marriages,” a drunk and rambling Jason gives us glimpses of his past (daily beatings by his Alabama-born father, Brother Tough), his present (sexual escapades at the Y, with a muscle man in LA and hustling in San Francisco) and his future (the quest to raise money for his cabaret act), and is never less than beguiling. Jason, who has “vacationed” on Rikers Island and done time at Bellevue following being arrested for gay sex, maintains his sense of humor throughout. As much a portrait of Jason as it is of the time (1967), Clarke’s film is like an unearthed time capsule. The DVD includes a wealth of bonus material including the film’s trailer, audio outtakes, a radio interview with Clarke, a few of Clarke’s shorts and more.

31

t’s amazing what someone will say when a movie camera is pointed at them. With encouragement from the late filmmaker Shirley Clarke, queer African-American raconteur and hustler Jason Holliday goes about “telling it all” in the pre-Stonewall, black & white film and one-man-show Portrait of Jason (Milestone/Oscilloscope). Answering questions posed to him by voices (including Clarke’s) from out of the frame, Jason begins by introducing himself with his given name and proceeds to tell the tale of how Jason Holliday was created in San Francisco by Sabu. He “dug” being called Jason, a name that suited his personality. Even Miles Davis called

him Jason. The name gave him the strength to be himself in NYC. Jason, who hustles and describes himself as “a stone whore,” will do anything to keep from punching the clock from nine to five. “Ballin’ from Maine to Mexico,” Jason hasn’t got a dollar to show for it, but he sure had a good time. What he really wants to do is perform. Staying well lubricated in Clarke’s Chelsea Hotel flat, Jason admits he “doesn’t mean any harm, but harm is done.” A “male bitch,” he goes out of his way to “unglue people.” Working as a houseboy for various well-to-do clients, Jason has plenty of stories about his bosses. A born entertainer, Jason utilizes his bag of props, which contains a picture hat, feather boa and other things. Once classes start, it’s business as usual. The class bullies are mean to Leo. But things are about to change for Leo with the arrival of new kid Gabriel (Fabio Audi). Paired up to work on a class project together, there is electricity between the boys. Each has an unexpected effect on the other. Leo, who only listens to classical music, is turned on to Scottish pop group Belle and Sebastian by Gabriel, who even gets Leo to dance with him in Leo’s room. Gabriel becomes increasingly aware of and sensitive to Leo’s needs as a visually impaired person. Meanwhile, Leo is doing everything he can to be more selfsufficient, something that doesn’t sit well with his over-protective parents Laura (Lucia Romano) and Carlos (Eucir de Souza). In fact, Leo is researching the possibility of studying abroad. This growing desire for independence also threatens Leo’s relationship with Giovana. The Way He Looks is remarkably insightful in terms of the way small, but meaningful details, can eventually amount to something much greater. Leo sleeping in Gabriel’s sweatshirt, for instance, is one potent example. Gabriel’s concern for Leo, applying sun-block to his skin and later rinsing it off in the shower, is another. t’s not as if anyone needs a reason to stay in Vancouver. The mild winter makes it a perfect place to visit to get in the holiday spirit. It turns out though that in the next few months, there are plenty of reasons to head to Canada’s west coast. When it comes to holiday traditions, seeing The Nutcracker ballet is high on many people’s lists. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet will perform the classic at Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre (650 Hamilton St., 604-873-7000), Dec. 12-14. For more tickets and more information go to www.balletbc.com. Of course, any city with a gay chorus can expect a wonderfully orchestrated evening of music when The Vancouver Men’s Choir performs its holiday concert, “Making Spirits Bright” at St. Paul’s Anglican Church (1130 Jervis St.), Dec. 4-7 and 11-13. For tickets go to www.vancouvermenschorus.ca. It’s been 10 years since marriage equality became the law of the land in Canada. There are plenty of romantically unforgettable spots in which to hold a magical wedding ceremony in Vancouver. Teahouse in Stanley Park, (Ferguson Point, Vancouver 604-6693281) located in one of Vancouver’s

or a magical wedding. Waiting until after the holidays makes travel cheaper, but there are still plenty of reasons to head northwest. Dine Out Vancouver runs Jan. 16-Feb. 1, and offers sumptuous three-course meals at more than 200 of the city’s restaurants for $18, $28, or $38. Many also provide set-price wine pairings. This would be a good time to check out the fantastic vegetarian spot, The Parker (237 Union St. 604-779-3804). Smack dab in the middle of the festival is an annual event that sells out quickly, so get your tickets to Dinner at the Birdcage on Jan 23, ahead of time. The cabaret show is presented by the Vancouver Friends for Life Society at Vancouver FanClub (1050 Granville

St., 604-689-7720). Choose between just watching the show, or the show and dinner. Get tickets at www.ticketstonight.ticketforce.com. The dates for the days when food trucks converge at the Vancouver Art Gallery Plaza (750 Hornby St., 604-662-4719) for Street Food City haven’t been set yet but check the Dine Out Vancouver website, www.dineoutvancouver.com, for updates. Finally, one of the big draws to the Pacific Northwest is the annual Whistler Pride + Ski Festival. Many visitors spend a bit of time in Vancouver when coming or going to the slopes. Jan. 24–31. For more information on the ski week and surrounding parties, check out www.gaywhistler.com.

great landmarks, offers a variety of ceremony and reception spaces with sublime views of the park’s greenery and nearby English Bay. If you prefer something more urban (and urbane), Windows on the Bay, in the penthouse of the Coast Plaza Hotel (1763 Comox St., 604-682-7982), towers 35 stories above English Bay and with sweeping views. The hotel has a long history of hosting LGBT events, and is located in Vancouver’s gay West End. If you’ve always wanted to walk in a winter wonderland, head over to VanDusen Garden (5251 Oak St., 604-257-8335, www.vandusengarden. org) where the greenery is dusted with snow and holiday light displays provide a romantic backdrop for an evening out

HOW TO HANDLE THE HOLIDAYS

H

ere we go again! Another whirlwind season of holidays are rapidly approaching as 2014 dances uncontrollably to a close. Parties, concerts, eating, and drinking are all characteristic festive features of this glittering season of good cheer. I don’t mean to be some prophet of gloom, but may I remind you that the average adult American gains an average of 5-12 pounds during this festive time of plenty. That’s right, the time between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day can wreak serious havoc upon your waistline as well as the serious fitness goals you’ve achieved in 2014. Here are a few pointers to help you stay happy, healthy, lean, and fit during the holidays. Never skip breakfast! The holidays will add extra demands to your already hectic schedule, but never fudge on the first and most significant meal of the day. By regularly eating complex carbs soon after you get up, you may be able to avoid overeating at lunch, dinner and at those holiday parties. Eating 4 or 5 smaller meals every two to three hours after breakfast will keep you from picking away at cookies and other junk. You’ll feel fuller, less likely to binge, and your body will have a steady, healthy supply of carbs and protein for those holiday workouts. Avoid holiday splurges and binge eating. Never eat without thinking and never consider yourself invincible when it comes to avoiding the bulge. Holiday foods are notoriously high in sugar, sodium and saturated fats. A little here and a little there can add up to ugly inches on that hot butt and tiny waistline. Re-gift candy and fruit cakes before you even think of breaking into them. They make marvelous, thoughtful gifts …for others. Do not be a slave to your chaotic lifestyle, which is certain to be compounded by holiday commitments. Take control and don’t let the merry mayhem wreak havoc with your eating habits. Evaluate your schedule and make time to fit healthy choices into your regime. Get to the gym and especially remember to do your cardio. Plan

nutritious meals and bring food to work with you. Take low calorie veggie trays and other healthy dishes with you to holiday parties so that you’ll have something to eat while others are slamming back the egg nog. If you are an emotional eater, the yuletide season is sure to cause you heartache. Stress at work, family squabbles, increased expectations from friends, holiday depression and loneliness can all be compounded at this time. Stress can increase levels of the hormone cortisol in your body, causing you to feel more hungry than usual. Figure out how to manage your stress levels, not only during the holiday seasons, but all year long. Find a good friend to talk to, listen to music, get a massage--in short, treat yourself nicely. Everybody needs a daily calorie budget. Make sure to read labels. Experts recommend reading labels for calories per serving and the amount of calories per serving coming from fat – if it’s one third or less, it’s probably a decent option. Next, look for the amount of sodium and fiber you’ll be getting. Comparing product’s labels will take extra time, but like choosing any delicious treat, you want to get to learn about the product inside before you taste the merchandise. You are not a victim to the holidays. The holidays are not about whining relatives and excess. They are about good friends and relaxation. Contact trainertomb@aol.com with your fitness questions.
