OBAMA AIDS DAY CALL FOR ACTION
W
Hundreds of thousands of adolescent girls and young women are infected with HIV every year, and we are working to reach and assist them and every community in need. As part of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, over 7 million people with HIV around the globe are receiving antiretroviral treatment, a four-fold increase since the start of my Administration. In countries throughout the world, our initiatives are improving the lives of women and girls, accelerating life-saving treatment for children, and supporting healthy, robust communities. As a Nation, we have made an unwavering commitment to bend the curve of the HIV epidemic, and the progress we have seen is the result of countless people who have shared their stories, lent their strength, and led the fight to spare others the anguish of this disease. Today, we remember all those who lost their battle with HIV/AIDS, and we recognize those who agitated and organized in their memory. On this day, let us rededicate ourselves to continuing our work until we reach the day we know is possible — when no child has to know the pain of HIV/AIDS and no life is limited by this virus. 13
impacted; and too many individuals continue to bear the burden of discrimination and stigma. There is more work to do, and my Administration remains steadfast in our commitment to defeating this disease. Guided by our National HIV/AIDS Strategy, we are working to build a society where every person has access to life-extending care, regardless of who they are or whom they love. The Affordable Care Act prohibits insurance companies from denying coverage due to a preexisting condition, such as HIV/AIDS, and requires that most health plans cover HIV screenings without copays for everyone ages 15 to 65 and others at increased risk. We have expanded opportunities for groundbreaking research, and we continue to invest in innovation to develop a vaccine and find a cure. And this summer, my Administration held a series of listening sessions across the country to better understand the successes and challenges of those fighting HIV at the local and State level. In the face of a disease that extends far beyond our borders, the United States remains committed to leading the world in the fight against HIV/AIDS and ensuring no one is left behind.
December 3, 2014
ASHINGTON, DC–In a statement on World AIDS Day, President Barack Obama has called for even more action against the disease. In communities across our Nation and around the world, we have made extraordinary progress in the global fight against HIV/AIDS. Just over three decades ago, when we knew only the devastation HIV inflicted, those living with it had to fight just to be treated with dignity and compassion, and since the first cases of AIDS were reported, tens of millions of vibrant men and women have lost their lives to this deadly virus. Today, we have transformed what it means to live with HIV/AIDS. More effective prevention, treatment, and care now save millions of lives while awareness has soared and research has surged. This World AIDS Day, we come together to honor all those who have been touched by HIV/ AIDS and celebrate the promising public health and scientific advances that have brought us closer to our goal of an AIDS-free generation. Since I took office, more people who are infected with HIV have learned of their status, allowing them to access the essential care that can improve their health, extend their lives, and prevent transmission of the virus to others. My Administration has made strides to limit new infections and reduce HIV-related disparities and health inequalities, and we have nearly eliminated the waiting list for the AIDS Drug Assistance Program. For many, with testing and access to the right treatment, a disease that was once a death sentence now offers a good chance for a healthy and productive life. Despite these gains, too many with HIV/ AIDS, especially young Americans, still do not know they are infected; too many communities, including gay and bisexual men, African Americans, and Hispanics remain disproportionately

NATION FDA ‘To Consider’ Relaxing Gay Blood Ban The Food and Drug Administration will meet next week to consider recommendations to lift the permanent ban on gay men giving blood, according to Pink News. In the US at present, regulations introduced during the AIDS crisis mean that all men who have sex with men are currently banned from giving blood for life. However, critics say the practice is discriminatory and does not reflect modern screening practices, and the FDA is facing calls to introduce less discriminatory rules.
KEVIN MILLER
Earlier this month, an advisory committee made a recommendation that the regulations should be relaxed, voting 16-2 in favour of instead introducing a 12 month ban for MSM, similar to the UK. FDA advisers will meet next week to consider the recommendations – which might not be adopted, as they are non-binding. FDA spokeswoman Jennifer Rodriguez told The Hill: “Following deliberations taking into consideration the available evidence, the FDA will issue revised guidance, if appropriate.” National Gay Blood Drive activist Ryan James Yezak said: “We’ve got the ball rolling. I feel like this is a tideturning vote. “There’s been a lot of feet dragging and I think they’re realizing it now.”
Iowa Minister Performs Same-Sex Marriage, and Now Is in Danger of Sanctions DES MOINES, IA—A retired Urbandale, Iowa, minister with the United Methodist church has been called on the carpet by bishop of the Iowa Conference last Monday who was none too pleased by the actions of the minister. According to reports, the Reverend Larry Sonner performed a same-sex marriage ceremony last month. Two weeks past before Sonner received notification that he has violated church law that does not allow pastors to perform
same-sex marriages. No disciplinary action has been taken against Sonner at the moment, but the penalties the minister may face could be severe, including being defrocked with its loss of pension and health insurance. The Reverend Larry Sonner, of Urbandale, is a retired Methodist minister. He performed the ceremony about a month ago. Sonner’s supporters said it was disappointing that none of the cabinet members who have accused him showed up for Monday’s meeting with Bishop Julius Trimble. The bishop told local television affiliate KCCI two weeks ago that it’s a civil rights matter and the United Methodist Church policy against same-sex marriage is wrong and needs to be changed.
INTERNATIONAL SAME-SEX MARRIAGE APPROVED BY FINLAND
December 3, 2014

H
ELSINKI, FI—The Finnish parliament has narrowly approved a citizen’s initiative to legalise same-sex marriage, according to Reuters News Service. Gay couples in Finland have been able to enter into registered partnerships since 2002, but until now the country was the only in the Nordic region not to allow same-sex marriage. Finland is now the 12th European state to do so. In the vote, 105 members of parliament supported the legal amendment while 92 opposed it. The measure will end the distinction in Finland between same-sex unions and heterosexual marriages and give such couples equal rights to adopt
children and share a surname. “Finland should strive to become a society where discrimination does not exist, human rights are respected and two adults can marry regardless of their sexual orientation,” the centre-right prime minister, Alexander Stubb, said in an open letter before the vote. Most opponents argued that all children should have the right to a father and mother. “This is a question of the future of our children and the whole society, and such changes should not be made without thorough evaluation of their impact,” Mika Niikko of the nationalist Finns party said before the vote.

Rep. Holly Raschein (R-Key Largo)
Abruzzo said if the measure passes, it will help Florida in its continuing quest to improve the state’s economy. “In order to remain economically competitive in a global marketplace, Florida must provide an environment that is welcoming to all,” Abruzzo told the Herald-Tribune. “Recruiting and retaining talent regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity will only serve to enhance our reputation and augment our economic viability.”
Bring Teddy’s to Gay Men’s Chorus The Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida is suggesting that their audience bring teddy bears with them to “Comfort and Joy,” the chorus’ Dec. 12-13 and Dec. 19-20 concert at Sunshine Cathedral in Fort Lauderdale. The bears, which should be new and between 12 and 18 inches in size, will

even more conservative than its predecessor and has a larger majority of Republicans. Supporters, though, told the HeraldTribune that they expect the proposal to draw bipartisan support. Raschein’s bill in 2014 had 10 GOP co-sponsors, including Rep. Ray Pilon, R-Sarasota. Additionally, a coalition of 19 Florida employers, including Walt Disney World, CSX Corp., Darden Restaurants, Florida Blue, Haskell, Home Shopping Network, Marriott, Tech Data Corp., Wells Fargo and Winn Dixie, are supporting the legislation for the coming session. The supporters note that 84 percent of the nation’s largest companies already have comprehensive antidiscrimination policies based on sexual orientation or gender identity. They also said 17 states and 170 cities – including some in Florida – have passed similar anti-discrimination measures.
TALLAHASSEE—In recently filed court documents attempting to reinforce the myriad of rulings against the same-sex marriage ban in Florida, attorneys for the American Civil Liberties Union, has redoubled their efforts just as Florida Attorney General continues to file motions to keep Florida same-sex marriage ban in place. In court documents filed last week, ACLU attorneys wrote, “The (plaintiffs) and same-sex couples across the state are subjected to irreparable harm every day they are forced to live without the security and protections marriage provides,” said one of the documents, “As they wait, children will be born, partners and spouses will get sick, and some will die. Each day that passes, some people will pass away without ever having been able to marry the person they love or to have their marriage recognized in their home state, depriving their surviving spouse of important protections.” Last August, U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle ruled that the same-sex marriage ban was unconstitutional but placed a stay on his decision to allow time for appeals. That stay is scheduled to expire January 5. Last month, Bondi asked the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to keep the stay in place until appeals are complete. But in two filings last week, attorneys for same-sex couples requested that the appeals court let the stay expire. In part, they pointed to many other federal and circuit court rulings that struck down similar gaymarriage bans in other states.
December 3, 2014
TALLAHASSEE—With co-sponsors Representative Holly Raschein (R-Key Largo) and Senator Joseph Abruzzo (D-Boynton Beach), the Florida legislature is once again set to consider prohibiting discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Floridians in the workplace, housing and public accommodations. Ironically, most Floridians think such protections are already in place. Or, at the very least, that the bill will sail through the approval process. But for HB 33 and SB 156, nothing could be further from the truth. The Florida Competitive Workforce Act, as the legislation is known, would extend the state law to prohibit discrimination against Floridians based on sexual orientation or gender identity, adding it to similar prohibitions against discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability or marital status. It could protect an estimated 536,000 LGBT Floridians, according to Equality Florida, a major gay rights advocacy group. Nadine Smith, CEO of Equality Florida, said there is currently no state law banning discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. “Most people are actually surprised to discover these protections don’t already exist because it seems such common sense,” Smith said. “Updating the law will help ensure that all people in our state have the opportunity to be judged on their job performance and qualifications, nothing more, nothing less.” Supporters also say polls have shown a majority of Floridians favor antidiscrimination measures to protect LGBT citizens. The stumbling block seems the Florida legislature itself. Last year, Raschein and Abruzzo backed a similar bill that never made it out of their original committees without so much as a hearing. The 2015 Legislature is
be given to children who are patients at Broward Center, a public health system of more than 30 South Florida healthcare facilities. This is the third year the chorus has conducted the teddy bear drive. Last year, the drive netted more than 1,000 bears. This year the goal is to donate at least 1,050 teddys to Broward Center.

o here’s the latest on Daniel DeSousa and Scott Wall. If the names don’t ring a gong of familiarity, it is only because Dan and Scott had no idea they were about to be come world-famous as the newest Ambassadors from Florida. Such a distinction may sound grand, but in reality, Florida has had its share of rather humiliating Ambassadors in the past. You don’t have to look further than Anita Bryant to get the point of that sentence. While Dan and Scott aren’t pitching us that “a day without orange juice is like a day without sunshine,” there are enough of us who are still living that recall the days that Anita warbled those lines while chucking a quart of our flavorful o.j. You probably read that last year Mr. Wall and Mr. DeSousa got married in New York, and decided to officially change their married name to Wall-DeSousa, even going as far as to registering with the Social Security Administration for new cards. When they returned to their native Florida (they are Brevard county boys), Daniel visits the local DMV and got his his driver’s license updated. New picture, new thumb print, and brand new name: Daniel Wall-Desousa. Fast forward a weeks, and Scott WallDesousa wanted to do the same. Apparently, Scott’s smile must not have been quite as enchanting as Daniel’s because Scott never made it pass the clerk of the court who refused to recognize Scott’s marriage license as identification. Never one to be easily rebuffed, Scott found a kinder reception in an Orange County DMV office, and received his new license as well. And then “the letter” arrived. Both boys were told that their licenses were issued in error and they would become invalidated at the first of December.

AS I SEE IT
Daniel and Scott Wall-DeSousa
Last week, the Wall-Desousas filed a lawsuit in Orlando federal court demanding that the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles give them back their licenses with the new pictures and the names. Being Southern gentlemen, they even said please. Their federal lawsuit federal court demands that the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles violated their rights to due process, equal protection and free speech. The agency is “trying to suppress the expression that the plaintiffs, as a samesex couple, are a family,” the lawsuit said. Agency spokesman John Lucas said that, “It was brought to our attention that the licenses had been improperly issued,” Lucas said. “Under law, we were forced to recall them.” Don’t ya love politics? It’s just the latest in a run of embarrassing political moves that have given new ammunition to our reputation as the “buffoon” state. For the temporary sake of expediency, Daniel replaced his driver’s license with one carrying his DeSousa moniker. Scott
will surely follow before their lawsuit runs its course. It’s a small stand by some regular guys who just want to hold up their hands and say “STOP.” It’s not okay for a state—any state—to make rules that apply to some, but not to all. Whether it’s about race, or immigration or, yes, even gay marriage, treating people differently for idiotic reasons is just plain bad manners. And it’s not how a great country treats its greatest citizens. While state attorney general Pam Bondi goes sieg heiling through the state and federal courts in a futile effort to stop gay and lesbians, bisexuals and transsexuals from getting married to the people they love, she’s left a jumble of appeals, rulings and stays in her wake. I have no doubt that the Wall-DeSousas will get their hyphenated licenses back eventually. And you know we’ll write about it right here to keep you posted. In the meantime, keep your heads down and remember as it’s currently being administrated, our beautiful state deserves all the bad-mouthing it will get in the meantime….Until next week…

MAJOR LEAGUE UMPIRE COMES OUT AS GAY

BY RICHARD HACK

Major League Baseball. It didn’t matter to the Major League Players. It didn’t even matter to the fans who still cursed and spit and told Scott to “go to hell” with the regularity of every other Major League umpire. By taking Dale Scott’s sexual orientation in stride, the Major League umpires have done what every other major league sport has not--behave as if it doesn’t matter, for it doesn’t. The reality is that the only thing that should really matter in the business of sports, as in any other, is how well Dale Scott does his job. And he does it well enough that he was the crew chief for the Dodgers-Cardinals divisional playoff series. Applause to Dale Scott with his two black labs (Roman and Rollie), his houses in Portland and Palm Springs, and his bestfriend—his lover and husband, Michael Reusch. Just one of the guys.

publication that wasn’t going to be circulated nationwide. It could be picked up, but it’s not Time magazine. I made that decision to go ahead and do it because I felt it was the right thing to do,” he told Outsports. “I realized that it could open a Pandora’s Box, but this is not a surprise to Major League Baseball, the people I work for. It’s not a surprise to the umpire staff. Until Mike and I got married last November, he was my same-sex domestic partner and had his own MLB I.D. and was on my insurance policy. “This is not going to be some huge flashing news to Park Avenue [MLB headquarters], but I also didn’t want to be making some coming out story, some banner headline, because that’s not how I operate. It’s not a shock to MLB management because they’re well aware of my situation, and it’s not a shock to the umpire staff. If it would have been, I don’t think I would have done it.” And therein lies the real story here. It didn’t matter to

ORTLAND, OR—Dale Scott officially revealed that he is gay on Tuesday and, with it, the homosexual community has found itself a new mold-breaker and unassuming torchbearer. The very private Scott will be horrified by this news, but this is one truth that will become increasing evident. Scott, you see, is a Major League Baseball umpire, and a very good one at that. As such, he’s got the gruff exterior, the bulk of a fire hydrant, and the mouth of a tugboat captain when he needs to use it. In short, he is anything but the stereotypical gay we’ve been pummeled by the media— film, television and theater— into accepting as real. Dale Scott revealed his sexual orientation via a small photograph that ran in a subscription-only magazine called Referee, that reaches several thousand likeminded folk. As part of a profile piece on himself, Scott included a snapshot taken of him and his partner Michael Reusch—a “family shot” he liked to call it. The photo caption read, “He and his longtime companion, Michael Rausch, traveled to Australia for the 2014 season opener between the Diamondbacks and Dodgers.” As it turns out, Reusch has been legally married to Scott for over a year (a small affair in Palm Springs last year), but they’ve been quietly together for 28 years (a lon-ng engagement). What makes Scott’s story so compelling is that he wasn’t hiding in a closet about his sexuality, though he wasn’t exactly speaking out about it either. It was just one fact of life among many that he didn’t bring to his workplace. Speaking to Jim Buzinski in Outsports magazine, Scott dismissed the impact his news would have on the sport. “In a small way, this was opening that door in a

he closest we’ve come to a music doc at the same level as Martin Scorcese’s The Last Waltz, James Keach’s affectionate, reverent, warts-and-all film Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me (PCH Films), tells us as much about the artist as it does about his struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Opening with Campbell, now in his late 70s, and fourth wife Kim (to whom he has been married since 1982) watching home movies, we witness the effect of Alzheimer’s on him as he is unable to recognize himself or others onscreen. Hot and handsome, “good old country boy” Campbell was a gifted musician who played with the Beach Boys for a few months, was 1968’s “Entertainer of the Year,” had a successful TV variety show, was an actor (alongside John Wayne in True Grit), and came to be known as the Rhinestone Cowboy (after his song of the same name). A 2011 Alzheimer’s diagnosis changed everything for Campbell, who embarked on his final concert tour of more than 150 dates in 2012. What is especially remarkable about these concerts is the way in which Campbell “becomes himself again” when he performs. He may be raging, unreasonable and unable to express himself in his personal, day-to-day life, but once he is onstage, he is in control (or at least as much control as the illness will allow). Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me strikes a balance between celebrating Campbell’s breathtaking talent as a performer, his role as a father, husband (as well as ex-husband), brother and friend, and his life as a patient undergoing treatment for the debilitating illness. Campbell’s praises are sung through a series of interviews with people such as his children Ashley, Shannon and Cal, publicist Bobbie Gale, Jimmy Webb (who wrote some of Campbell’s biggest hits), Vince Gill, Brad Paisley,

FKA Twigs – Miami
The Big Ticket Concert – Jacksonville
I and You – Orlando
New beau of Robert Pattinson is possibly about to be engaged to the Twilight star. Despite all the recent tabloid press, FKA Twigs is best known for her critically acclaimed twisted and soft R&B music. Her recent album LP1 has been heralded by some as one of the best albums of the year. Often compared to Tricky, her music is inspired by such artists as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Marvin Gaye. The 26-yearold will be performing her elegant music tonight at YoungArts Campus. 7:00 p.m. YoungArts Campus. 2100 Biscayne Blvd. Miami. 33137.
Rivers Cuomo’s wildly successful and influential band Weezer is one of the main acts for The Big Ticket Concert. Formed in 1992, Weezer’s first album The Blue Album rose the charts based on the strength of its hit singles “Buddy Holly,” “Say It Ain’t So,” and “Undone—The Sweater Song.” Later albums Pinkerton and The Green Album both received commercial and critical success. Joining Weezer will be Pete Wentz’s indie alternative band Fall Out Boy. Hit singles “Sugar We’re Going Down” and “Dance, Dance” solidified Fall Out Boy as one of the most popular pop punk bands of the 21st century. The concert takes place at Metropolitan Park. 1:00 p.m. Metropolitan Park. 4110 Gator Bowl Blvd. Jacksonville. 32202.
Mad Cow Theatre puts on Lauren Gunderson’s valentine to youth, love, and alienation. On the night before a class assignment is due, Caroline and Anthony analyze the splendor of a Whitman poem, unaware that a deeper mystery has brought them together. Chronically ill Caroline acts as the perfect foil for basketball playing, jazz music loving Anthony, and their connection emphasizes the strange beauty of human connectedness throughout all of our lives. 8:00 p.m. Mad Cow Theatre. 54 W. Church St. Orlando. 32801. December 3, 2014 27

He has been on the faculty at Florida Atlantic University, and has lectured at Florida International University School of Medicine, The Catholic University of America, The University of Maryland and Guelph University in Canada. He is the author of the recently-published book, Sex Happens: The Gay Man’s Guide to Creative Intimacy. The book is available on Amazon. www.MarriageCounselingForMen.org/SexHappens

HEALTH
JACKSON: Why are most gay men single? Is it that relationships are just more complex for two men than they are for heterosexual couples? LEIGHT: I’m not sure we really know what percentage of the gay male population is single as compared to heterosexuals. What I am sure of is that relationships are complex, gay or straight. And while all relationships have struggles, gay male relationships have their own set of unique challenges. It is important to understand that every gay man and each gay relationship is unique, so any characterizations made are generalizations and cannot be universally applied. That being said, the most challenging component of intimacy is emotional vulnerability. Men in our culture are socialized to avoid emotional expression. We are
taught that boys don’t cry, and communicating about feelings is to be avoided. In heterosexual relationships, women often bring the emotional component to the table. When two men get together, they often avoid the tough dialogue about feelings and sidestep emotional tension. There is frequently a struggle between autonomy and intimacy as men try to maintain individuality and independence while holding back emotional vulnerability. The holding back creates a disconnect that eventually manifests itself in the bedroom. Intimacy is directly proportional to vulnerability, and so it is in the realm of emotional dialogue that gay men face their biggest relationship challenges. When men discover the power of communicating feelings with a partner, they discover a new level of intimate
connection that actually strengthens their sense of autonomy. In Sex Happens, I work with the reader to learn tools for better communication and opening up to deeper levels of emotional intimacy. I also explore other unique challenges facing gay male relationships including gay identity development, body image/self-esteem and sexual compatibility (top/bottom issues). JACKSON: In your clinical experience, do gay men have more issues with intimacy and sexual dysfunction than straight men? LEIGHT: I don’t know that I’d say gay men have more issues with intimacy and sexual disorder than straight men. In general, men are men. However, when homophobia and heterosexism are internalized, feeling “less than” or “not good enough” can and does affect how gay men experience intimacy. When a gay man feels bad about himself because he is gay, often at unconscious levels, there is an impact on how vulnerable he will make himself with a partner. Erectile and orgasmic disorders may manifest as a result of these unprocessed feelings. JACKSON: Same-sex couples can now be married in 35 states. Do you see the formality and legality of marriage as a positive development in the longevity of gay relationships? LEIGHT: Well, if straight marriage is an indicator of any sort, we can surmise that marriage is not the magic bullet for relationship longevity. I think there is potential for longer lasting relationships with marriage, as there is a formal and legal expression of commitment that is requires a formal and legal divorce for dissolution. However, relationships are dynamic, and no contract is going to keep two people together who feel their relationship has come to a place of hopelessness. I would
like to think that troubled gay couples who marry may be more open to seeking marriage counseling earlier than non-married couples, thereby increasing the longevity of the marriage. That being said, as I discuss in Sex Happens, I do not equate relationship longevity with relationship success. JACKSON: One theory is that men are genetically pre-disposed to being “hunters” and preserving the species by spreading their seed, making long-term, monogamous relationships with only one partner a challenge. In your opinion, is there any substance to this school of thought? LEIGHT: Long-term monogamous relationships are a challenge, period. Let’s clear up some terms, first. Monogamous means married to one person, just as polygamous means married to more than one person. It does not mean sexual exclusivity. Monogamous relationships may or may not be sexually exclusive. The whole social evolution of dyadic relationships is only about 10,000 years old in our human experience. It evolved out of the advent of the agricultural society. With this development came the need for the family unit as an economic entity. Paternity became financially essential. To guarantee paternity, monogamy and sexual exclusivity became embedded into the fabric of modern social structure. Prior to the agricultural revolution, man lived in self-sustained small groups of less than 100 people in which sex was open and free. Paternity was not of consequence. This is our natural state as human beings. (Sex at Dawn: The Prehistoric Origins of Modern Sexuality, Ryan & Jetha, Harper Collins, 2010) It is for this reason that men struggle with an honest drive to have sex with multiple partners and an honest resolve to love and commit to one
open-minded therapist is ideal.
JACKSON: You have lectured on the subject of gay men finding loving relationships and talk about this in your book. What
JACKSON: Adult gay men in the 1980s who experienced the advent of HIV/AIDS will remember the cloud of fear over having sex. Now that HIV is essentially a manageable disease, are we headed for another sexual revolution? LEIGHT: I thought we were already there! In all seriousness, it might be best to end this interview by saying that it is still important to utilize safer sex practices. And, to reiterate, the biggest fear many gay men face is the fear of being truly, emotionally vulnerable with a partner. This vulnerability, and facing this fear, is at the heart of one’s own personal sexual revolution.
floridaagenda.com
JACKSON: What do you see as the challenges of long-term gay couples as opposed to their straight counterparts? LEIGHT: As our society opens up to acceptance of gay relationships and gay parenting, I believe the lines of difference become blurred. The greatest variance in experience may be related to how we treat aging gay people as opposed to aging straight people. There is concern that our own over-emphasis with youth and beauty leave older gay men feeling invisible and neglected. The loss of a long-term partner often leaves the mature gay man very much alone. I think, as a community, we need to bring more awareness to this issue and find innovative ways to take care of our own.
tips can you give someone looking for a potential partner? LEIGHT: Be honest and be yourself. Take responsibility for your own needs and desires. Communicate, right from the start, about your feelings. Read Sex Happens: The Gay Man’s Guide to Creative Intimacy.
/floridaagenda
JACKSON: We seem to be hearing more these days about “open relationships” among committed male couples in which they are allowed to have sex, either together or separately, outside of the relationship. Is this typically a sign of trouble for the relationship? LEIGHT: It depends. As I previously explained, the drive to have different sex partners or explore different sexual experiences is human. It is a choice as to whether one is going to act on these drives. Some couples try really hard to maintain sexual exclusivity as an expression of commitment and love. For some men, I would argue most men, this is a very difficult challenge. So, the desire for an open arrangement is not problematic in-and-of-itself. What is dangerous for the relationship is the lack of honest communication about these feelings and desires. Cheating and dishonesty are poison for
a relationship. I have worked with many couples in developing a contract, with parameters, for an open sexual relationship. When there is full disclosure about what is going on sexually and emotionally within the relationship, and full disclosure about sexual interests and desires, there is an increase in emotional vulnerability. Increasing vulnerability increases intimacy, and often the discussion alone leads to better sex within the relationship and less interest for extracurricular activity. Open relationships create potential new relationship dynamics, and unless those are explored in depth beforehand with parameters for protecting the emotional integrity of the relationship, the openness will likely create problems that may become insurmountable. In Sex Happens, I take the reader through the steps, questions and dialogue necessary to develop an open relationship contract. I do not recommend or advocate for an open arrangement, however, if a couple really want to explore sexual openness, doing so with complete honesty is essential. Creating the arrangement under professional guidance with an

partner. This struggle is real as evidenced by how much men are ready to risk it all for a sexual encounter. To ignore the reality of this struggle is to ignore our humanity.
