to working with New Jersey’s elected representatives to pass this important protection for LGBT victims and their families as quickly as possible.” Joe Hayden, a prominent defense attorney, said he’s never heard of a defendant in New Jersey using the gay panic defense. But he opposes anything that would make a potential defense off limits.

discrimination is widespread. Egyptian police officers use social media and GPS-enabled dating apps such as Grindr to track and arrest people, according to LGBT activists in the country. The people arrested are typically charged with debauchery, immorality or blasphemy. A group of 26 men suspected of homosexuality were dragged naked from a bath house in downtown Cairo earlier this month, following a raid by Egyptian authorities. Their trial, on charges including debauchery, is set to begin in January. The eight men whose sentences were reduced may appeal the new ruling in the Court of Cassation, Egypt’s highest court.

AIRO, EG--An Egyptian appeals court has reduced, from three years to one, the prison terms for eight men jailed last month for appearing in a video of what was alleged to be the country’s first gay marriage. The verdict drew “tears and shouts” from family members in the courtroom, a witness told the news agency Reuters. The defendants denied charges of spreading indecent images and inciting debauchery, however, a video that was taken during the ceremony went viral on social media sites last August, placing the men in jeopardy. Gay marriage is not legal in Egypt, and although homosexuality itself is not specifically outlawed, homosexual acts are, and

In 2002, attorneys for California men, who who took part in beating to death 17-year-old Gwen Araujo, made a similar argument, since two of the men had sexual contact with Araujo before they learned she was biologically a man. Both cases first ended in mistrials. McInerney later pleaded guilty to manslaughter with a firearm. Two of the men who killed Araujo were eventually convicted of second-degree murder, while two others pleaded guilty to lesser crimes. The defense was less successful in the trial for the 1998 murder of Wyoming College student Matthew Shepard, when one of his killer’s attempted to use it. The defense is rooted in centuryold theories about homosexuality as a mental disorder, and the term “homosexual panic” was coined by psychiatrist Edward Kempf in 1920. The gay rights group Equlaity California told the Los Angeles Times in 2011 that the defense has been employed in at least 45 cases nationwide. Asked why he introduced the bill, Eustace said that “at the end of every year, I try to review some of the things I think need to be done” “It is a recognized defense and it does have precedence,” he said. The American Bar Association in 2013 passed a resolution urging governments at all levels to restrict the use of the defense at the urging of the National LGBT Bar Association. “Based upon the initial language of the gay/trans so-called “panic” defense bill, the LGBT Bar is pleased to support it,” said its executive director, D’Arcy Kemnitz. “We look forward

“I do not believe it is widely used. But I am against any provision which would eliminate the ability of a defendant to argue that a murder charge should be considered as manslaughter because of the surrounding circumstances,” he said. “Juries are smart enough and have the common sense to differentiate between a reasonable, valid fear and a bogus defense. And we should not eliminate defenses when there’s no precedent for their misuse.” New Jersey gay rights activist Steven Goldstein said the bill “has merit.” “I would caution anyone to say that this is a solution in search of a problem,” he said. “We as a society should be far more progressive than waiting for tragedies to occur before we respond. Clearly in parts of the country this has been a problem. New Jersey should be a leader.”

TRENTON, NY — It’s called the “gay panic” defense. A straight person charged with murder argues for a manslaughter charge instead because he became so enraged at being hit on by someone of the same gender — or a transsexual person — that he entered into a state of temporary insanity. The defense has been used, with varying measures of success, in several states. And even though it’s unclear if it’s ever been used in New Jersey, Assemblyman Tim Eustace (D-Bergen) last week introduced a bill to prohibit it. “I want to make sure that we’re paying attention to things before they happen,” Eustace, who is the Legislature’s second openly gay member, was quoted in the N.J. Assembly blog. Under New Jersey law, a defendant can be charged with manslaughter – a lesser charge than murder – if, among other things, the crime “is committed in the heat of passion resulting from a reasonable provocation.” Eustace’s bill states that that a provocation can not be interpreted as reasonable if it is based on “the discovery of, knowledge about, or potential disclosure of the homicide victim’s actual or perceived gender identity or expression,” including “circumstances in which the victim made an unwanted, non-forcible romantic or sexual advance toward the actor, or if the victim and actor dated or had a romantic or sexual relationship.” New Jersey would not be the first state to ban such defenses if the bill becomes law. California Gov. Jerry Brown signed a similar bill in September. California saw two of the most high profile “gay panic” defenses in recent memory. In 2011, lawyers for defendant Brandon McInerney argued that he gunned down Larry King — when they were ages 14 and 15, respectively — because McInerney was so humilitated by King’s advances.

NATION FDA Favors Dropping Ban on Blood From Gay, Bisexual Men WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal health officials are recommending an end to the nation’s lifetime ban on blood donations from gay and bisexual men, a 31-year-old policy that many medical groups and gay activists say is no longer justified. The Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday it favors replacing the blanket ban with a new policy barring donations from men who have had gay sex in the previous year. That policy puts the U.S. in-line with other countries including Australia, Japan and the United Kingdom. The lifetime ban dates from the early years of the AIDS crisis and was

Gay Couple Offer Critique After ‘Faggots’ Carved into Front Door After the word “faggots” was carved into the door of a gay couple below their Christmas wreath, their response was brilliant. The couple, whose identities remain anonymous, responded after the word was carved into their front door earlier this week. They responded with a note to the
“individual that scrawled the word ‘faggots’ into our door” by saying: “We regret to inform you that you completely failed to use glitter paint and/or sequins, your work looked rushed, and your handwriting was positively atrocious. “It is for these reasons that we had to remove your work from our door with sandpaper. “Fabulously yours, The Gays in Apt. 611.” The incident was reported on Reddit, which notes that the message was sanded off.
Korra and Asami Are Lesbians HOLLYWOOD, CA--The creators of the hit animated Nickelodeon show The Legend of Korra have confirmed that the show’s title character, Korra, and another female character named Asami, are in a lesbian relationship. The pair relationship is made clear in the final episode of the series which aired last Friday on the Nickelodeon Channel. In the final moments of the show’s season finale on Friday night, Korra and Asami “held hands, turned and gazed at each other lovingly while romantic music played, and walked off together into the bright light of the Spirit World,” reports the Daily Beast. Although there was nothing explicitly sexual about the scene, subsequent Tumblr posts by the show’s writers, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko make it clear that the two characters were intended to be gay. “Our intention with the last scene was to make it as clear as possible that yes, Korra and Asami have romantic feelings for each other,” DiMartino wrote on his Tumblr account. “The moment where they enter the spirit
portal symbolizes their evolution from being friends to being a couple.” Co-creator Konietzko added in a separate Tumblr post: “You can celebrate it, embrace it, accept it, get over it, or whatever you feel the need to do, but there is no denying it. That is the official story. We received some wonderful press in the wake of the series finale at the end of last week, and just about every piece I read got it right: Korra and Asami fell in love. Were they friends? Yes, and they still are, but they also grew to have romantic feelings for each other.” “But this particular decision wasn’t only done for us,” he adds. “We did it for all our queer friends, family, and colleagues. It is long overdue that our media (including children’s media) stops treating non-heterosexual people as nonexistent, or as something merely to be mocked. I’m only sorry it took us so long to have this kind of representation in one of our stories.” The move was met with a monument of praise as well as the expected horror from some heterosexual families. “It is disturbing to me, because my 10 year old daughter has loved Legend of Korra from the beginning,” said Ruthie Townsend of Nashville, TN. “The show includes so many good lessons for children, like bravery, selflessness, and friendship. It’s just very sad that the creators had to push their agenda on impressionable children.” “Really?! In a children’s show? If they didn’t want to push the heterosexual agenda then they should also not push the homosexual one,” another blogger named Joy Ogbonna wrote. “Sorry but this ending to a children’s show leaves a sour taste in my mouth.” The Legend of Korra was conceived as a sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender, which aired from 2005 to 2008. Korra ran from 2012-2014.

Florida Same-Sex Couple Denied Divorce MIAMI — The 3rd District Court of Appeals last week denied a same-sex couple the right to divorce. Sarah Oliver and Heather Stufflebeam were married in Iowa, and were not challenging the state’s ban on samesex marriage in their petition. The court in its ruling noted that Florida does not currently recognize same-sex marriage and therefore a lower
court’s decision to deny the divorce to the couple was correct. Unfortunately for the two women plantiffs, they did not bring their appeal to Broward County. It was there in the circuit court of Judge Dale Cohen that the first same-sex divorce in Florida was granted two weeks ago. Judge Cohen recently declared that the state’s ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. While same-sex marriages are expected to start in Florida on January 6, at press time it was still unclear how many county clerks in the state would begin to issue marriage licenses on that date, bracing themselves for further legal challenges from the Pam Bondi, the state’s attorney general.

lorida has surpassed New York to become the third most populous state in the nation, according to U.S. Census Bureau figures released today. By adding 803 residents everyday between July 1, 2013 and July 1, 2014, Florida’s population grew by 293,000 over this period, reaching 19.9 million. The population of New York increased by 51,000 to 19.7 million. California remained the nation’s most populous state in 2014, with 38.8 million residents, followed by Texas, at 27.0 million. North Dakota was the nation’s fastest-growing state over the last year. Its population increased 2.2 percent, followed by the 1.7 percent growth in Nevada and Texas. Each of the 10 fastest-growing states was in the South or West with the exception of North Dakota. The United States as a whole saw its population increase by 2.4 million to 318.9 million, or 0.75 percent. In addition to the 50 states and the District of Columbia, the new statistics also include estimates for Puerto Rico. On July 1, 2014, Puerto Rico had an estimated population of 3.5 million, a decline of 47,000, or 1.3 percent, from one year earlier.

ORLANDO—Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer will officiate at a mass same-sex wedding ceremony on January 6 at City Hall, according to an announcement by the Metropolitan Business Association (MBA), the chamber of commerce for Orlando’s gay community. While January 6 is the first day a federal judge has ruled that gay and lesbian couples can lawfully get married in Florida, the Orange County Clerk, Tiffany Moore Russell, has said that she is still studying the issue, and could not guarantee that marriage licenses would be issued. According to the MBA, Dyer’s event is planned to occur at 9 a.m., and will be open to any same-sex couple with an official marriage license. “We’re looking for couples who are interested in being a part of this momentous day,” the association said in a weekly electronic newsletter sent out last week. The MBA is not alone. The GLBT Community Center of Central Florida plans to host a mass same-sex wedding at 6 p.m. on Jan. 6, and ministers at First Unitarian Church of Orlando are offering to marry any same-sex couple for free in back-to-back ceremonies January 10, starting at 1 p.m.

Poll: Most Florida Clerks Won’t Issue Gay Marriage Licenses ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – Most of Florida’s 67 clerks of court don’t plan to issue marriage licenses to gay couples on Jan. 6, paralyzed by confusion over whether a ban on same-sex marriage is being lifted across the whole state that day, according to an Associated Press survey. The overwhelmingly majority of clerks who responded to AP’s inquiry this week said they wouldn’t offer marriage licenses to same-sex couples without further clarification from a federal judge on whether his ruling applies beyond Washington County. A lawsuit filed in the remote Panhandle county by two men seeking to be married became a key basis for U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle’s decision ruling the state’s samesex marriage ban unconstitutional. The association representing Florida’s clerks has issued an opinion that the ruling doesn’t apply to other counties, and said clerks can be prosecuted for violating the law if they issue same-sex marriage licenses. Most Florida’s clerks are following that advice. “I’m not going to break the law,” said Paula O’Neill, the clerk for Pasco County, in the St. Petersburg area. “I’m not going to issue licenses until it’s legal.” Of the 53 clerks who responded to the AP survey, 46 said they wouldn’t grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples because they lack legal authority. Six clerks said they hadn’t made up their minds; Only one clerk outside Washington County, Osceola County’s Armando Ramirez, said he would issue the licenses. Ramirez said his office would begin issuing marriage permits for same-sex couples a minute after midnight on Jan. 6. He said it’s a matter of not discriminating against a minority group. “We won’t waste any time,” he said. Gay rights groups are disputing the clerk association’s interpretation of Hinkle’s ruling, and they’re threatening legal action if licenses for same-sex couples aren’t issued across the state. On Wednesday, they sent out a memo

to Florida’s 67 clerks of courts stating the clerks are required to stop enforcing Florida’s ban on same-sex marriage in two weeks. “We are prepared to fight,” said Sharon Kersten, a public relations consultant for Equality Florida, the gay rights group. Some clerks said they’re hoping for clarification from a court. Dwight Brock, clerk of Collier County in southwest Florida, said it would be “disastrous” if counties didn’t act in a uniform manner. He hasn’t decided what to do given the conflicting opinions. “It is as clear as mud,” Brock said. The judge may offer some clarity. Washington County’s clerk on Tues-
day asked Hinkle if his ruling applied only to the couple in the lawsuit or to any same-sex couple seeking a marriage license from the county. On Wednesday, Hinkle asked two state agencies, to offer their positions by next Monday. Several clerks who don’t plan to issue the licenses until they get further clarification said they’re conflicted, since they support gay rights. “I’ve been with the gay community on the issue of equality, forever. I want to see this resolved,” said Pat Frank, clerk for Hillsborough County. “The only thing that concerns me are the penalties that might affect my office. It’s a first-degree misdemeanor if the State Attorney decides to prosecute me.”
At least one Florida prosecutor, State Attorney Jeff Ashton in Orlando, has said he wouldn’t prosecute any clerks for issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. His jurisdiction covers Orange and Osceola counties. Some clerks are considering sending same-sex couples to county judges, who are also allowed to issue marriage licenses under Florida law. County judges can waive some marriage-license requirements, such as the three-day waiting period or the restriction on a minor getting married. “Maybe, if nothing changes, we would treat it like these other cases, and send it to a county judge,” said Ken Burke, clerk of Pinellas County.

GAY MARRIAGE SNAFU:
ONLY IN FLORIDA O kay, even we have to admit that the same-sex marriage developments in Florida have moved from being frustrating to confusing to the now chaotic status we watch unfolding before us. After U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle refused Florida’s State Attorney General Pam Bondi’s request for an extension of the stay on gay marriages currently in place until January 6, she took her case to the U.S. Supreme Court. The justices there declined to hear the case, putting it right back in Judge Hinkle’s lap where it still remains. Therefore, according to law, on January 6 at 12:01 a.m., same-sex marriages will be legal in Florida by order of the court. What should have been a clear legal issue has now been muddied by many of the Clerks of the Court across the state that are now refusing to issue marriage licenses on the advice of their organization’s counsel at the law firm of Greenberg Traurig. That law firm has warned the Clerks of the Court that they could face misdemeanor charges if they issue same-sex licenses to the LGBT couples requesting them. They based their decision on the fact that the original lawsuit which Judge Robert Hinkle heard was one which was based in Washington County, and, in legal theory, according to Greenburg Traurig, only that one clerk is permitted to issue licenses to same sex couples. While it is understandable that Court Clerks want to abide by the letter of the law, it is confusing just what the law clearly means. According to a press release from Equality Florida, any court clerk who refuses to issue a marriage license on January 6 will face a lawsuit against them for their actions. “Any Florida clerk who refuses to follow the Constitution’s command

and who withholds marriage licenses from couples once the stay expires is on the wrong side of history and the wrong side of the law,” said Shannon Minter, Legal Director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights. “A discredited memo from a law firm won’t provide much protection against the risk of being sued for unconstitutional actions and being held liable for any damages — and attorney fees — incurred by couples as a result of withholding the freedom to marry. There is one Constitution, Florida is one state, and all Floridians are entitled to equal treatment throughout the state.” Hmm…pity the poor Court Clerk who seems to be liable to be sued either way, projecting January 6 to be the most interesting day in 2015. (You’ll remember, of course, that in 1994 this was the day that ice skater Nancy Kerrigan was attacked by fellow ice skater Tonya Harding’s bodyguard.) Legal experts who have worked to secure marriage in other states agree that the threat in the Greenberg Traurig memo is a strained interpretation that ignores legal precedent and common sense. Some clerks have thrown caution to
the wind and are now preparing for marriage, adjusting forms and determining if they will open early. The Osceola County commission has already voted that the second-floor courthouse office where passports and marriage licenses are issued will open at 12:01 am on January 6. Osceola County Court Clerk Armando Ramirez has posted the following announcement on his website: “The Clerk’s office is proud to support marriage equality. Marriage licenses will be issued on January 6th at 12:01 a.m. to the first 30 qualified couples who register online. Registration begins on December 30, 2014 at 8 a.m.” Be that as it may, Howard Simon, executive director of the Florida branch of the ACLU, admitted, “We’re in a state of chaos.” As for Judge Hinkle, sometime this week, he is expected to decide whether all gays in Florida can marry on Jan. 6, or just the named parties in the lawsuit. Hinkle is also expected to give some clarity to county clerks, who may or may not listen to his wisdom. At press time, we continue to bite our nails…Until next week…

he Castro family business known as Cuba has made great strides in the “handling” of homosexuals in this Communist country since the 60s and 70s when gays and lesbians were imprisoned in labor camps. Now they’ve been placed under the watchful eye of Mariela Castro, president Raül Castro’s daughter and niece to the “Maximum Leader” Fidel. Mariela is the director of the state-run National Center for Sex Education (CENESEX), which has become the official “voice” of the Cuban LGBT community. To hear Mariela tell it, Cuba is on the verge of an amazing transition that would sweep acceptance of gays and lesbians into the largely Catholic general population without a flutter of bigotry. During the seventh annual “International Day Against Homophobia,” some 500 people marched through Havana’s Vedado district waving rainbow flags and dancing to a conga beat, without getting much notice from locals who aren’t allowed to legally protest anything in the country—not even the samesex couples holding hands in the street or the transgender women shaking their breasts to the music. Much of this has been made possible by Fidel Castro’s admission in a 2010 interview published in the Mexican newspaper La Jornada. In it, Castro placed the blame for Cuba’s historical persecution of gays squarely on his own shoulders, calling it “a great injustice.” “If anyone is responsible, it’s me,” he said. “We had so many and such terrible problems, problems of life or death. In those moments, I was not able to deal with the matter of homosexuals.” As of 1979, being gay is no longer a crime in Cuba, although under Article 303a of the country’s Penal Code “publicly manifested” homosexuality remains illegal, as does “persistently bothering others with homosexual amorous advances.” Cruise in public and expect to get three months to a year in prison. alk into The Athletic Man in Fort Lauderdale and you feel like you stepped into a cute little men’s boutique. Beautiful Lucite chandeliers adorn the high ceiling giving touch of sophistication. Tank tops line the walls in every color of the rainbow, from prints to solids. There are shorts for the gym, shorts for running, shorts for swimming, shorts for walking, and of course sexy shorts for answering the door when that hot date arrives at your front door! Oh but wait, they carry jock straps, G-strings, sexy swimwear so it’s more than athletic wear. Recently we caught up with the owners of The Athletic Man, Allen and Jean-Francois for a question and answer session. What makes The Athletic Man store different from other shops? Just walk in and your will understand! We have hundreds of tanks and thousand of shorts, some amazing swimwear and gym pants from many different great designers who understand a man’s body. Also we are very focused on the way our clothing fits so it’s not just about the look. We really enjoy our customers and we love to give personal attention to each one of them as you would to a good friend!
14
What is the best advice you give to your customers? Take the clothing off the rack and try it on because trying it on is the only way to know how they will fit on you. Different designers have different cuts for the same clothing. All tanks or shorts are not create the same. Designers create clothing with different body types in mind.

BUSINESS FEATURE
What is your focus when choosing the lines of clothing you carrying? Our motto is “Be sexy, be yourself, show it! What that means is everyone wants to be sexy, everyone wants to look good and every one wants to show the parts of their body that
are complementary for them. For instance, if someone has very skinny legs you do not want to see him in shorts that are loose around the thigh, a more fitted cut looks better. Before placing an order we chat with the designer to understand his view and we definitively try the clothes to feel the fit. Are your cloths only for the gym? Absolutely not, we live in Florida! Many of your garments can be worn to the gym in the street or in the club. It is up to you. Go out on the drive any night of the week and you will see lots of guys wearing tanks and shorts going to the bars. Showing some skin is always sexy! Which one of you posed for the logo?! Funny you would ask! Our logo is none of us but it symbolizes more of a state of mind. We all have a goal in life and our logo represent someone who reaches that goal. So, in a way it is more of an inspiration for your state of being than a physical one. What did you do before opening this store? It’s a long story but to make it shorts
we met almost 20 years ago in Los Angeles. I (Allen) was in the hotel industry while Jean-François was an entertainment journalist for French magazines and newspapers. Nine years ago he lost his work visa, so because of DOMA (Defense Of Marriage Act) we were forced to move somewhere French so we could stay together. So where did you go? We moved to the French island of St Martin in the Caribbean where we had to reinvent ourselves. Once DOMA was repealed in June 2013, we knew we would be able to move back to the United States as an American. Finally I was able to sponsor Jean-François as my spouse for a green card. Why did you choose Fort Lauderdale as your new home? Well you have heard about people getting island fever on a rock right? Fort Lauderdale, early on became our escape to stay in touch with civilization! After many visits to Fort Lauderdale, we fell in love with the city and the gay community here. A very vibrant gay community is something we really missed while living on the island.
How did you end up opening The Athletic Man store? Living in exile for so many years makes you realize how important it is to love what you do. Both of us always were always athletic and had a passion for clothing especially Tanks, Shorts, and sexy clothes. During our many trips to Fort Lauderdale as well as other cities, it was always a challenge to find nice tank tops and sexy shorts. Both of us never liked going to a traditional sporting good store where garments just don’t fit the body well and are usually very expensive. What is next for The Athletic Man? Some of our favorite designers have offered us some artistic freedom to create exclusive items, or have added our logo on to their line. We have also started creating some tank tops in house using some quite uncommon fabrics. It makes us so happy when we spot a guy wearing something that came from our store! The Athletic Man is located at 1433 NE 4th Avenue, one block south of the Ramrod, just across from Wilton Wings restaurant. The store is open daily from 10AM to 6PM. Private fittings are also available upon request. Call 954-764-4434 for more details or check out the website at: www. TheAthleticMan.com

WANT TO BE SMARTER AND MORE PRODUCTIVE? READ THIS.
FITNESS MAN
W
e have long known that regular exercise has a direct effect on our health. You might call it Nature’s antidote to lower cholesterol, hypertension and body fat and, not least of all, keep us looking and feeling younger. Now there is now a mountain of scientific evidence pointing to exercise having a dramatic effect on the brain’s production of neurons. These neurons degenerate naturally, exposing us to anxiety, depression and chronic stress – and worse, triggering the body’s production of cortisol, commonly known as the stress hormone. Researchers such as Yale University’s Ronald Duman, Ph.D., have found exercise lowers cortisol levels and stimulates neurogenesis (the growth of neurons) which improves our overall brain power: Cognition, focus, mood, impulse control and, yes, productivity. Findings such as these – and the fresh start and new opportunity given to us every January 1st – should motivate us to get off the sofa, turn off the TV, log out of Facebook, and do something. Walk, run, bike, swim, workout with a friend, join a fitness or yoga class, hire a personal trainer. Just do something to get your body moving! All around us there are examples (although I wish there were more) of friends, neighbors and community leaders who have literally changed their lives by losing weight and getting fit. Robert Boo, executive director of the Pride Center, transformed his body in 2013 and, to his credit, is literally half the man he used to be thanks to a change in diet and his new passion, cycling. The publisher and editor-in-chief of this newspaper, author Richard Hack, has been passionate about weight training for years and his body today is the envy of most men over the age of 50. Richard will tell
you exercise gives him the energy and fortitude to maintain a grueling schedule of deadlines. Perhaps the most inspirational body transformation this year belonged to Mark Haines. The founder of the South Florida LGBT entertainment web site Mark’s List, Mark faced a never-ending daily calendar of social events and parties where alcohol and unhealthy hors’doeuvres tend to be the fare. Mark was unhappy when he came to me for help – and presented a challenge. He wanted to lose 60 pounds in 7 months in order to participate in the 2014 Smart Ride fundraiser, a 160+-mile bike ride from Miami to Key West. It was a tall order, but trainer Cory Davis and I took on Mark’s challenge. In one of his last Facebook posts before he was tragically killed
walking back to his hotel from dinner (after completing the first leg of the Smart Ride), Mark wrote: “I’ve lost 70 pounds [in seven months]. I go to the gym twice a week for a workout and amazing support…I ride my bike 150 to as many as 320 miles a week. I feel amazing and happy every day now.” That is the power of exercise. The biggest reason people fail to exercise is lack of motivation when going it alone. Avoid this by challenging a partner, friend or co-worker to join you in losing weight and getting fit. Make a pact to help and motivate each other. Set a goal for yourself and a deadline — and tell
everyone about your goal. Let them know you’re serious and need their help to stay on course. If you need more help, get it. There are great deals to be had for fitness classes as well as private personal training. If you are the type of person who gets lost or intimidated in the maze of a commercial gym, consider other options. Even a $10 a month gym membership is expensive and a waste of money if you never go! It’s a new year and a whole new opportunity to be healthier, happier and more productive through regular exercise. Are you ready for the challenge?

ot the best year for film by a long shot, 2014 wasn’t the worst year either. As in recent years, indie films, ranging from comedies to dramas to docs, were the place to look for the best of what was out at your favorite art house or multiplex. A few big budget Hollywood blockbusters kept us entertained, but they also disappointed in record numbers (Is the Transformers franchise at an end yet? How could Into The Woods get so tangled in its own branches?). Below is a list of the fourteen best movies of 2014, along with some honorable mentions, as well as a few of the very worst of the year.

Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (Fox Searchlight) – Don’t call it Michael Keaton’s comeback, call it his breakthrough. Inventive and hallucinogenic, with potshots at Hollywood and Broadway, as well as a minitribute to Raymond Carver, Birdman soars.
2
Boyhood (IFC) – Richard Linklater’s groundbreaking cinematic achievement is original and epic. Let the imitations begin.
3
The Grand Budapest Hotel (Fox Searchlight) – Wes Anderson’s next logical (and magical) step after Moonrise Kingdom and Fantastic Mr. Fox. Can’t wait to see what he comes up with next.

4
Love Is Strange (Sony Pictures Classics) – As timely as it is timeless, the second installment in Ira Sach’s New York real estate trilogy, features an Oscar-worthy performance by John Lithgow.
5
Obvious Child (A24) and The Skeleton Twins (Roadside Attractions) (tie) – Comedy took a bold leap forward in 2014, and these two daring movies are prime examples.
Love is Strange
Joni Mitchell said it best when she sang, “laughing and crying/You know it’s the same release.” Brava Jenny Slate! Bravo Bill Hader!
6
Ida (Music Box Films) – Pawel Pawlikowski’s post-Holocaust drama is nothing short of a work of art. Almost every black and white frame is worthy of exhibition in a gallery and the screenplay (cowritten by Pawlikowski) is haunting and brilliant.
7
Guardians of the Galaxy (Marvel) / Mr. Peabody and Sherman (DreamWorks Animation) (tie) – If you wanted to have fun at the movies, these were the two to see. Galaxy made comic book movies safe for comic book haters and … Peabody… was the most subversively queer kids movie of the year.
8
The Way He Looks (Strand) – A different kind of coming out/ love story about a blind gay teen’s first crush.
9
Chef (Open Road) / The Hundred-Foot Journey (Touchstone/ DreamWorks) (tie) – Foodies had a couple of tasty treats this year to satisfy their cravings for epicurean entertainment. Helen Mirren served up snooty French realness in the The Hundred-Foot Journey, while writer/director/actor Jon Favreau shared the screen with a food truck.
10
The Normal Heart (HBO) – No, The Normal Heart never made it to the big screen (thanks to Barbra Streisand), but Ryan Murphy’s brave film adaptation found a home on cable, and in the process probably reached an even broader (and grateful) audience.
11
The Fault In Our Stars (Fox 2000) – The perfect antidote to dystopian Y/A lit movie adaptations (see The Hunger Games, Divergent, The Giver, The Maze Runner, et al), Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort play the most appealing star-crossed lovers since Romeo and Juliet.\
Honorable mention: The Imitation Game, St. Vincent, Big Hero 6, Locke, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Belle, Life Itself, Gone Girl, Get On Up, Neighbors Simply the worst: Winter’s Tale (WB): Is there anything worse than an abysmal film adaptation of a beloved novel? Jersey Boys (WB): Is there anything worse than an abysmal film adaptation of a beloved (jukebox) stage musical? Maybe Clint Eastwood should stay away from all cameras, period. Maleficent (Disney): Is there anything worse than a failed attempt at bringing a cartoon character to life in an unpleasant live action film adaptation? Maybe Angelina Jolie should stay behind the camera. America: Imagine the World Without Her (Lionsgate): Pitiful propaganda for Fox News junkies from goony right-wing nut job Dinesh D’Souza.
MIAMI/ MIAMI BEACH
1/2 Mr. Mariah Carey (or perhaps formerly) has a lot going on in his career away from his famous wife—he is an actor, comedian, rapper, entrepreneur, record producer, and radio personality. Roles in shows like All That and Kenan and Kel led to his current work on America’s Got Talent and TeenNick. Some of his most popular singles were “Gigolo” and “Feelin’ Freaky.” 11:55 p.m. Wall W Hotel. 2201 Collins Ave. Miami Beach. 33139.

The classic Disney film is transformed to the stage for this elaborate musical. Belle, a bookworm and alienated villager, is trapped by a cursed prince and his eccentric, enchanted household. The prince must rid himself of his selfish ways and, in turn, win Belle’s love in order to reverse the curse before the townspeople destroy him. Songs “Be Our Guest,” “Gaston,” “Something There,” and the title track have become contemporary classics. 7:30 p.m. Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. 1300 Biscayne Blvd. Miami. 33132.

MOST LGBT FRIENDLY VACATION SPOTS
S
tarted nearly 40 years ago by a couple of hippies looking to travel through Europe to Asia, Lonely Planet has gone on to become one of the most respected travel guides. Lonely Planet was also one of the first mainstream companies to include guides for the LGBT community. Each year it compiles its “best of ” lists and the most welcoming spots for LGBT travelers is among one of the categories. As we start a new year, following are the top five spots in the world.
34
#1 Copenhagen #2 New Zealand #3 Toronto, Canada #4 Palm Springs, California #5 Sitges, Spain

TRAVEL
The gay-friendly list, like the rest of the series, was compiled “based on topicality, unique experiences and that ‘wow’ factor and if the destination demonstrated inclusiveness & tolerant behavior toward our community, has progressive equal rights laws and, finally, how safe the selection is for the LGBT traveler,” according to Lonely Planet’s Chris Zeiher. “The list is both consciously diverse and, in some cases, a little unexpected.” Copenhagen, Denmark is known as one of the most open-minded communities in Europe. In 2014 Copenhagen named the square adjacent to City Hall Tower “Rainbow Square” in recognition of the quest for equal rights. Check out the nearby Oscar Bar & Café (Rådhuspladsen 77 1550, +45 3312 0999). For night owls, Nevermind Nightclub is open until at least 6 a.m. (Nørre Voldgade 2, nevermindbar. dk). Visit in August 11-15 for Copenhagen Pride or in October for MIX Copenhagen, a LGBT Film Festival (Date TBA). In 1998, New Zealand was the first nation to adopt the label of “gay/ lesbian friendly” when referring to businesses and accommodations. Gay Ski
Copenhagen, Denmark
Week, part of Winter Pride, Queenstown, has become a perennial favorite. Don’t forget, that like other countries “down-under” New Zealand’s winter is our summer, so the event takes place in late July or early August (gayskiweekqt.com). In Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, check out Eagle (259 Karangahape Rd., 09-309-4979), which is laid back early, but gets wild late at night, or the ultra-butch, Urge (490 Karangahape Rd, 09-307-2155). Toronto continues to be a beacon for the LGBT travelers in North America. The community is The Village, located at the intersection of Church and Wellesley. Woody’s (467 Church St., 416-972-0887) is a Toronto staple and you may recognize it from “Queer As Folk.” Two of the biggest events are “Halloweek,” a wicked weeklong celebration and June’s Pride Week; ten days of queer celebration that turns streets into parades and parking lots into parties. The highest ranking U.S. city, Palm Springs, is a sun-seekers’ paradise where the sun shines almost all year. In addition to outposts of local favorites Alibi (369 N. Palm Canyon Dr., 760-325-5533) and Hunter’s (302 East
Arenas Rd., 760-323-0700), check out the campy Toucans Tiki Lounge (2100 N. Palm Canyon Dr., 760-416-7584) or Score (301 E. Arenas Rd., 760-3270753). Upcoming events include International Bear Convergence, Feb. 12-16. Sept. 17-20, it’s the Palm Springs Gay and Lesbian Film Festival and lesbians from around the world will converge on Palm Springs Apr. 1-5 for the Dinah Shore weekend. Right after that, it’s the Coachella music fest, spanning two weekends, Apr. 12-19. Sitges, Spain is a coastal town that has become one of the “Big Four” destinations for queer travelers. The preponderance of beautiful, often clothing-optional, beaches is one reason, as is the fact that the village enjoys a unique microclimate with more than 300 days of sunshine per year. Often touted as the “St Tropez” of Spain, Sitges is an exclusive but not an expensive resort. There are more than 35 LGBT clubs, restaurants and guesthouses crammed into this relatively small town. The best time to visit is from end of spring, through the end of summer. There are two main gay beaches. La
Platja de la Bossa Rodona, right at the center of town, across from the hotels La Niña and Calipolis. The other, Playa del Muerto, is a nude beach known for heavy cruising. It’s a 45 minute walk from town, or take a taxi to the end of the boulevard (ask driver for club Atlantida), and then walk 15 minutes along the railway track. After a day at the beach party at Club Azul (Carrer Sant Bonaventura, 10), the kinky Dark Sitges Bar (Carrer Bonaire, 14) and the trendy Privilege Music Bar (Bonaire 24). The LGBT event calendar kicks off Feb. 10-18 with Carnival and revs up right around Bear Week (Apr. 30-May 4), when all of the bars and clubs are open daily, the beaches are busy and the season is in full swing. Sitges Gay Pride takes place from June 18-22 and a gay beach party is held every Thursday during July and Aug. The summer season winds up with Festa Major at the end of Aug. In our next issue, we’ll look at the remaining five cities rounding out Lonely Planet’s Top 10 LGBT welcoming travel destinations. Until then, have a happy and safe New Year.
