SUNSHINE STATE Wilton Manors Needs Better Event Planning, Group Says Some key business leaders have approached the city of Wilton Manors about how to sponsor events more efficiently inside city limits. With the city funding and providing resources to organizations every year to assist with events, the Wilton Manors Development Alliance (WMDA) has proposed new ideas for more effective use of the same resources in order to alleviate problems related to new organizations lacking knowledge and lessons gained from previous years. The Wilton Manors Development Alliance Inc is a member based, nonprofit organization established in 2004 to promote arts and cultural activities, improve the quality of life, assist with community improvements and to promote economic development within the city.

She currently holds a Jamie Bloodworth Society membership in the Dolphin Democrats. Jamie Bloodworth was a strong advocate for LGBT and women’s rights. She died from breast cancer complications in 2005. Each year, a Jamie Bloodworth Award is presented to a woman who has shown leadership on LGBT issues from human rights to community well-being. The chorus is always looking for new members. All that is required is a commitment to attend rehearsals and the ability to carry a tune. Non-singing members help with concerts, tickets, posters, flyers and other social engagements.

ORT LAUDERDALE — The Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus (FLGMC) is holding a fund raising event this Sunday, Jan. 25. The event will be held at Mojo Restaurant, 4140 N. Federal Highway and begins at 5:00 p.m. with appetizers and cocktails, followed by a three-course dinner at 6:00 p.m. Tickets for the event are $95 and must be purchased in advance by calling 954-832-0060. After 29 seasons, the FLGMC is the oldest gay performingarts organization in Florida and has gone to gain the respect and admiration of the entire community, both gay and straight. The group produces three major concerts a year, performing at The Pride Center, Gay Pride, the Wilton Manors Tree Lighting Ceremony, Christmas on Las Olas and Funding Arts Broward. ast Sunday, as the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks were winning their respective division championships to score a spot in the Super Bowl XLIX game (February1, 2015), there was a war of the off-turf sort about to start at 2031 Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors, home to Sidelines Sports & Video Bar. As you can imagine, when the AFC and NFL Championship games are airing, it’s a big day for a sports bar—one of the biggest of the year. Little did Jen Mojica realize when she showed up just after noon that she was about to enter a combat zone. Those in the know will remember that Jen is the longtime wife of Laurie Whittaker, Sidelines owner. With Laurie in bed with the flu, it was Jen who got the short straw to cover the business, and keep the patrons happy. At 12:30 p.m., customers were already staking out their stools for a good seat to watch the contests. But, they were hardly the only ones at the scene. As Jen tells it, “our landlord and property owner, Anthony De Reggi (known as Tony Dee), decided it prudent during this time to have two workers there to scrape off the black marks that appeared on the sidewalks in front of our building (as well as the adjacent building, of which he recently purchased). “The two workers utilized two electric generators, parked them in the alleyway between the two buildings and ran electrical cords from the front of this area to the back alley.” This is the area that Sidelines uses as its smoking patio. Jen thought that the cords posed a safety hazard, to say nothing of the racket that the generators were making behind the bar. “Because of the noise factor, several customers left the area because they weren’t able to enjoy their time there,” Jen continued. “Now, we are aware

that this is a civil matter and are taking strides to address & adjudicate these issues. But, we felt it important to document the incident to show yet another form of “tortuous interference” of our business, and another form of “harassment” by Tony Dee.” This isn’t the first time that TD and LW have gone to the mat over landlord issues. According to Jen, Tony Dee took it upon himself to move planters in this smoking area that Laurie had positioned to act as a sound barrier for her longsuffering neighbor behind the business. “This has been reported and documented by Officers Cox (case #43-1501000761) and Ramirez, who also called in the Code Enforcement Officer on duty, J. Wolf,” Jen added. “Mr. Wolf advised us that there was nothing he could do.” Fortunately for Sidelines on playoff day, the workers hired by the landlord agreed that they would stop their side-

walk cleanup at 3 pm, just as the games were commencing. Jen sent a email, obtained by the Agenda, concerning the disruption to Wilton Manors Mayor Gary Resnick and Vice-Mayor Tom Green, as well as City Commissioners Julie Carson, Scott Newton plus Police Chief Paul O’Connell. “Ladies & Gentlemen,” Jen wrote, “I did not spend this morning writing this email to expect you to ‘do’ anything, I simply wanted you to know what occurred and if possible, help us in the future. “We are not aware of Mr. Dee’s ‘agenda’ here, but our customers strongly feel that there is one. We do not believe it is one of money, as he seems to have enough money, but maybe he wants to be the ‘Mayor of Wilton Drive,’ ‘Captain of Industry,’ who knows?” The next voice you’ll hear from is Tony Dee….Until next week….

SUPREME COURT TACKLES SAME-SEX MARRIAGE WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Despite the fact that it was less than 50 years ago, it now seems like such a basic right as to be inalienable. In making that ruling, the Supreme Court said, “The freedom to marry has long been recognized as one of the vital personal rights essential to the orderly pursuit of happiness by free men.” The majority continued, “To deny this fundamental freedom on so unsupportable a basis as the racial classifications embodied in these statutes, classifications so directly subversive of the principle of equality at the heart of the Fourteenth Amendment, is surely to deprive all the State’s citizens of liberty without due process of law.” Replace “racial classifications” with “sexual orientation” and we have our answer. Let the wedding bells toll.

The only escape for diehard states that persist in denying marriage rights would be to stop issuing all marriage licenses—both straight and gay—much the same as certain conservative county clerks in Florida stopped performing all courthouse weddings. The second question the Supreme Court will be considering is “Does the Fourteenth Amendment require a state to recognize a marriage between two people of the same sex when their marriage was lawfully licensed and performed out-of-state?” While technically the court could say “yes” to one question and “no” to the other, effectively splitting its vote down a middle path, the likelihood of such a vote is low. Our clearest clue as to the most likely decision the Supreme Court will reach before this coming July can be found in its 1967 ruling against the state

n a stunning turn of events, and after years of declining to rule on the issue of samesex marriage, the Supreme Court last Friday agreed to rule on the power of the states to ban same-sex marriages and to refuse to recognize such marriages performed in another state. While just how the court will rule is always a question mark, in this particular instance the Supreme Court telegraphed many of its talking points in an unusual move: It reframed the questions presented in four different cases on the issue, and grouped them all together for the purpose of clarity. The first question being considered is “Does the Fourteenth Amendment require a state to license a marriage between two people of the same sex?” To understand the question necessitates knowledge of the 14th Amendment, largely unknown to most outside of legal circles. The amendment was ratified on July 9, 1868, not long after the Civil War ended, and was originally intended to secure the rights of slaves who were emancipated as a result of the Civil Rights Ac of 1868. In part, the Amendment reads: No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws. The 14th Amendment essentially provides a pot from which all other rights grow and strives to guarantee that all citizens are treated alike. Reduced to such simplistic terms, it is easy to see how the majority of law scholars are predicting that the Supreme Court must rule in favor of gay marriage. The Court has homed in on the central issue that has been presented by the legal same-sex-marriage debate from the beginning: do state governments violate the basic principle of “equality under law” when they grant marriage licenses only to opposite-sex couples? The states have long place restrictions on certain categories of people due to physical handicaps. No state, for instance, presently grants a driver’s license to the legally blind. Those individuals are placed in a classification subject to “heightened scrutiny.” Sexual orientation does not belong in this category any more than race or religion does.

By Daniel Hicks Paul and Cal live in Oakland Park. They met at a popular restaurant in Wilton Manors back in 2006. They got married in New York. Paul is from Malta, Ohio and is a corporate training manager for United Healthcare. Cal is from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and is a substance abuse counselor. The couple’s relationship works because they are friends first, Paul said, and complete opposites! Three years into their relationship, the couple decided to become foster parents after a lunch with friends who were considering adoption. Cal said he always wanted to be a father. Paul never thought he would get married. After taking classes to get licensed, the couple

started looking for a little girl with 10 fingers and 10 toes. They took Reia home at two and a half weeks in early 2014 after she was born on Valentine’s Day. She was named after both of their grandmothers. She’s now 10 months old. Reia’s biological mother “will never know the gift she’s given us,” Cal said. Like most of the other foster parents profiled in this series, they met Carlton Smith of Finding Life through John Duffy. Paul and Cal say the group has bonded and grown closer as a result of their shared experiences. “All of us started out the same way, by fostering a child. Now Cal and I are only weeks away from adopting Reia,” said Paul. “We have relationships with 75 percent of the group and are developing (relationships) with all the others.”

By Sebastian Fortino South Florida has long been a popular choice for weddings and a favorite vacation spot for the LGBT community. Now that gay marriage is legal many gay couples will choose to make their favorite vacation destination into their destination wedding. It’s estimated that over the next few years nearly 30,000 LGBT resident Floridian couples will marry here. The Williams Institute of UCLA estimates Florida residents getting married and the economic impact of their guests will generate more than $180 million over the next few years. Of that number about $115 million will have an impact in the first year alone. That’s not taking into account how many out-ofstate couples will come here to say “I do.” Steve Murray-Smith, of the Florida Keys & Key West Tourism Office, is very familiar with the impact of weddings on local tourism. Key West is, after all, one of Florida’s favorite destinations – gay or straight, wedding or weekend. He shared his thoughts on what the business of gay weddings will do for Key West’s economy. We can take it as a Petri dish for the rest of the state. “Somewhere around 30% of the wedding business is already LGBT,” Murray-Smith said of Key West weddings. “Having worked many pride festivals and LGBT consumer events, there is great interest in having a wedding here, now that it’s legal and there’s also strong interest in honeymooning in the Keys. “Over the last 18 months I’ve seen a large increase in requests for information about venues for weddings, receptions, and honeymoons, the sheer variety of locations for weddings in the Florida Keys – beaches, hotels, historic homes – is also a contributing factor to its popularity. At a recent California pride festival most of the attendees at my booth were interested in planning their wedding on Key West.” Key West, like much of South Florida, has looked forward to marriage equality and is prepared to welcome LGBT couples at the altar. “Many of our planners have been involved in commitment ceremonies so they have the basics of LGBT marriage down pat,” said Murray-Smith. “There is not really a burst of growth in wedding planners, but they are fine-tuning their offerings to change from commitment to marriage.” Weddings are reason to celebrate. Especially during a destination wedding, because it’s a sort of family reunion — a vacation in which everyone can unwind and celebrate together. It’s time to hit the beach — after getting married on it. A time to really get to know the in-laws — for better or for worse. Wedding parties also do what Americans do best, especially during seasons of economic upswing: spend.

ntimate indie Song One (Cindedigm/Film Arcade) is the fulllength feature film debut from writer/director Kate Barker-Froyland. The film opens with busker Henry (Ben Rosenfield) performing in a New York subway for change. On his way home, Henry is hit by a cab and ends up in a coma. Henry’s itinerant sister Franny (Anne Hathaway), a wide-eyed PhD candidate in anthropology, is in Morocco studying the nomadic tribes when she receives a phone call from her mother (Mary Steenburgen) telling her about Henry’s situation and asking her to come home to New York. Complicating the situation is the fact that Franny and Henry haven’t spoken in a few months following a disagreement over Henry’s decision to drop out of college to become a full-time musician. Back in New York, wracked with guilt, Franny spends time at Henry’s bedside, talking to him, apologizing, crying. At his apartment, she locates his guitar case, which contains his journal, and within those pages she begins to learn new things about Henry. One thing she learns is that Henry is a fan of James Forester (Johnny Flynn, who sounds like Ray Davies of The Kinks), a musician who earned indie fame and fortune with an album he released five years earlier, but has been experiencing a creative dry spell. Franny seeks James out to tell him about Henry’s admiration of his work. Song One begins to sound familiar here, like a song you’ve heard before, when Franny and James seek comfort and solace in each other, inspire each other and fall in love at an especially vulnerable moment for both of them. However, at less than 90 minutes, Song One doesn’t have enough time to become grating. Instead, the combination of music (original tunes by Jenny Lewis and Johnathan Rice)

hat happened to Barry Levinson? The man behind `80s classics such as Tin Men, Diner, Rain Man, Avalon and Good Morning, Vietnam, has stumbled in recent years. His latest, the homophobic, transphobic and misogynistic The Humbling (Millennium), based on a Philip Roth novel with a screenplay by co-written by Buck Henry, won’t do much to help his cause. Actor Simon (Al Pacino, feasting on the scenery), has an emotional breakdown in front of a full house, tumbling from the stage in the midst of a Shakespeare soliloquy.

His recovery, which involves a stay in a rehab facility where he is treated by Dr. Farr (Dylan Baker) and befriended by fellow patient Sybil (Nina Arianda), is quick and soon he is back at home. Shortly after his return, Pegeen (Mumblecore diva Greta Gerwig) shows up on his doorstep. The daughter of friends of Simon’s, Pegeen admits to having a crush on him since she was a girl, although now she is a lesbian, currently involved with Louise (Kyra Sedgwick), the dean of the women’s college where Pegeen teaches. Simon, who is having difficulty “separating a scene from a play from the reality of real life,” is suddenly drawn into a drama that not even Shakespeare could have written. First, despite his agent Jerry’s (Charles Grodin) hounding, Simon refuses to return to the stage. Second, flirtatious and devious Pegeen begins a romantic

relationship with Simon. This doesn’t sit well with Louise, as well as Pegeen’s F to M trans ex Prince (Billy Porter), who was formerly known as Priscilla, or either of Pegeen’s parents. To quote Othello, as Simon does, “chaos is come again.” Sybil wants to engage Simon in a plot to murder her husband. Pegeen, who continues to have relationships with other women while she is involved with Simon, is going through Simon’s money like there’s no tomorrow. There are even hints of incest in the story. Reminiscent of Birdman (although nowhere near as original) in the way it presents an actor questioning his craft and talent, The Humbling misses its mark throughout. If this is Levinson’s attempt at making a mumblecore film, he’s better off sticking to what he did best in the past.

ommunity Marketing & Insights (CMI) has just released its 19th Annual LGBT Travel Survey. The survey provides a snapshot of LGBT travel motivations, perspectives and purchases. The survey indicates that while motivated to travel to a destination by a wide variety of factors, “returning to a destination previously enjoyed” was number one. While we all like the familiar, vacations are a time for adventure. That doesn’t mean you need to jump off a cliff, swim with sharks or scale a mountain. You can have an adventure by heading to a new destination. In our last column, we looked at some vacation destinations that are less frequently visited, but appear to be on the edge of becoming hugely popular. We round out the list with a few more entries.

If you’re the type who enjoys ecoadventures, skip Costa Rica and head north a bit to Nicaragua. With both Pacific and Caribbean coasts, you’ll marvel at the geographic diversity; beaches, lakes, islets, volcanoes, rainforests, and reefs, all within hours of each other. The vibe is a mix of colonial and bohemian and the biggest selling point is that it’s dirt cheap. Gay life in Nicaragua has been a bit of a roller coaster in this predominantly Catholic country. After some LGBT civil rights gains in the early ‘90s, the Christian right tried to undermine the GLBT community. Following some minor setbacks, Nicaragua is becoming more progressive. Under new laws same sex relationships are legal and the age of consent is 18. The country’s capital city, Managua, holds an annual pride parade, but even in big cities discretion is the key. There are few street names in Mana-

gua. In order to find places, you need to use a landmark or call for directions. The main gay venues in Managua are late night dance club Tabu (505 2222 2222, a block down the street from the Teodolinda Mansion) and Bar Q at the Barcelo Montelimar hotel. In Granada, Nicaragua’s other sizeable city, ex-pat gays used to gather at the second floor de Mi Terra. It recently closed, but should be re-opened by the time you read this. Granada’s gay-friendly hotel, Joluva (505 2552 0555, joluvanicaragua.com), is quaint with just three rooms and a small apartment. The owner knows everything that’s going on in town and where all the hot parties are happening. If you are looking for an escape, then check out San Simian (011 505 8813-6866), an LGBT-friendly eco resort located in Laguna de Apoyo with five bungalows right on the shores of a volcano crater lake. You won’t be completely cut off as they have wi-fi. In Managua, stay at the gay-owned Viva Nicaragua guest house in Barrio Ticuantepe (505 8743 3700, no web page, but you can find them on Facebook), which has just four rooms, but boasts a swimming pool and is only 15 minutes from downtown Managua. Some of the other destinations that are destined to become hot spots include; Leipzig, Germany, Cartagena, Colombia and Playa del Carmen in Mexico. Check out these places now while they’re still relatively unspoiled. Nobody likes sloppy seconds.

YOUR BEST DEFENSE AGAINST THE FLU THIS SEASON

W

e are lucky here in South Florida for many reasons, not the least of which is our fabulous, tropical weather. Sure, we may get a cold snap now and then during January or February (Yeah! Like 72 degrees is really cold?). There is also that occasional gray, rainy day, but at least you never have to shovel drizzle. One thing we can’t escape is the onslaught of flu season which seems to set in and claim its victims everywhere around this time every year like clockwork. Never think you are above it! Just listen and behold the coughing, snorting and gurgling in the checkout line at Whole Foods, in the break room at work, and even in the gym as you work out. Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can be mild to very severe with symptoms that include fever, headache, fatigue, body aches, dry cough, sore throat and runny nose. People with the flu may feel nauseous and have vomiting and

diarrhea, although these symptoms are more common in children than adults. Flu can lead to pneumonia and other serious illnesses for people who are particularly vulnerable such as those with compromised immune systems. November through March is Flu Season in the United States. While a flu shot is the best protection against the virus, there are several other ways to help avoid the flu: • Try to avoid contact with people who are obviously sick. • Stay home if you are sick. That means the gym too! Working out while you are sick will cause more harm than good. Never even attempt to work out with a fever, body aches and chills. Stay home and rest and drink plenty of fluids. • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. • Wash your hands often to avoid spreading germs. • Avoid touching your nose, mouth or

eyes to help keep germs from entering your body. It is especially important for people who fall into one of the following high risk categories outlined by the Centers for Disease Control to get a flu shot: • Children age 6-59 months and their household contacts and out of home care givers. • Women who will be pregnant during the flu season. • People aged 50 or older. • People of any age who have certain chronic medical conditions. • People who live with or care for anyone at high risk. • Health care workers. Those at high risk should contact their primary care physicians to discuss where and when to get the flu shot. Some Healthy Measures to Ward Off the “Bug.” • Get lots of fresh air. Take fresh air
