Alabama Gay Marriage Ban Overturned; 14-Day Stay Issued
Court takes up the issue of gay marriage later this year. However, Granade did issue a 14-day stay to give the state time to ask the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for a lengthier delay. Alabama Attorney General Luther MONTGOMERY, Ala. ONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The couple whose lawsuit toppled Alabama’s gay marriage ban said they are grateful, overjoyed and still a little a bit in disbelief. “We are still trying to take it all in. It’s overwhelming. We’re very grateful. Wow. It happened,” Kim McKeand said. Cari Searcy and McKeand, along with their 9-year-old son, filed a lawsuit this year challenging the ban that prevented Alabama from recognizing their California marriage and Searcy as a parent to their son that McKeand birthed. “It was never about marriage equality for us. It started with me trying to gain parental rights to our son that we created,” Searcy said. U.S. District Callie V.S. Granade on Friday ruled in the couple’s favor declaring both Alabama’s statutory and constitutional gay marriage bans to be in violation of the U.S. Constitution. The ruling was the latest in a string of wins in the South for advocates of gay marriage rights, but one that the couple’s friends doubted would happen in conservative Alabama. “There were so many people who believed it couldn’t happen here,”
Searcy said. They got the news Friday with a phone call. “We three immediately started dancing and doing the happy dance and giggling and laughing and crying and we’ve been celebrating ever since,” McKeand said. Searcy, 39, and McKeand, 38 are both from Texas and met in college. Searcy, the owner of a video production company, and McKeand, a marketing manager, moved to Mobile 13 years ago. “Everybody was like why Alabama? We found it, Mobile in particular, to be very inviting and just a great community and we loved it,” Searcy said. McKeand in 2005 gave birth to a son who was conceived with the help of a sperm donor. The boy was born with a hole in his heart and needed surgery. Searcy said that her status as a non-parent became clear when a nurse said she needed proof of guardianship to show her procedures needed for the boy’s care. “I was a total legal stranger,” Searcy said. Searcy filed an adoption application but said she was denied on the basis that only married couples or single people could adopt. The
couple wed in California in 2008. They applied again, but said they were rejected again because of the state’s prohibition on recognizing their marriage. The judge’s Friday decision was met with sharp criticisms from conservatives in and out of Alabama who called it an affront to state voters who in 2006 overwhelmingly approved putting a prohibition on the recognition of same-sex marriages into the Alabama Constitution. “This federal judge is throwing out the votes of the people of Alabama and attempting to shut down the debate over marriage. In exercising their right to vote, Alabama voters overwhelmingly sent a message that that they want to see society rebuild and strengthen marriage – not have it redefined by unelected judges,” said Tony Perkins, president of the Washington D.C.-based Family Research Council. The legal fight is not over, however. Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange’s office quickly filed a motion Friday night asking Granade to put her order on hold since the U.S. Supreme Court is supposed to consider the issue of gay marriage later this year.
David Kennedy, a lawyer for the couple, said they will file an objection to the request to stay the order. He said the couple also plans to refile their adoption paperwork first thing Monday. Additional litigation is almost a certainty. The Alabama Probate Judge Association issued a statement Saturday saying there was nothing in the order to require judges to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. “As probate judges, our duty is to issue marriage licenses in accordance with Alabama law and that means we cannot legally issue marriage licenses to same sex couples. The recent federal ruling does not change that,” said Monroe County Probate Judge Greg Norris, the president of the judges’ association. Searcy and McKeand said despite living in a state considered one of the most conservative in the country, that they received mostly positive support. They said their son has long been aware of their legal fight. “To him our family has really been no different than any other family. He just knew we had this court thing. He was very happy. He told one of his friends, ‘We changed the law.’” McKeand said.

their religious beliefs. In Georgia, the debate flared this month when Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed fired the city’s fire chief after learning the chief self-published a book describing homosexuality as a perversion. Reed, a Democrat, said the fire chief never got city permission to publish the book, but the fire chief said he did. The Washington-based Family Research Council and others have used the firing to rally support for the latest legislation in Georgia, though it’s unclear the proposed law would have made a difference. The legislation would forbid the state government from infringing on a person’s religious beliefs unless the government can prove it has a compelling interest. Unlike legislation in other states, the bill in Georgia makes no reference to same-sex relationships, though critics fear it would allow businesses to discriminate against gay customers. Other states have passed similar acts. Republican Rep. Sam Teasley, the bill’s sponsor, denied the bill is about gay marriage. “This is a modest protection for people of faith,” he said. The Georgia Chamber of Commerce says it will oppose any bill that allows discrimination. Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal, a Republican, voted for a federal version of the legislation in Congress, though it was before gay marriage began in the United States. “It’s not a bill that I’m going to be pushing on my own initiative, but it is one that I have sentiment for,” Deal said. The Republican speaker of Georgia’s House of Representatives, Rep. David Ralston, has signaled his skepticism. “This is obviously something that was important to the drafters of the constitution because they put religious freedom in the constitution,” Ralston told reporters. “I want to know what this bill does that the constitution doesn’t do.”

ATLANTA (AP) — A Texas lawmaker would strip the salaries from government officials who honor same-sex marriage licenses. Other states would protect government officials who opt out of performing gay nuptials. In Georgia, where lawmakers are considering a bill that critics fear could allow businesses to discriminate against gay customers, the former head of the country’s largest Protestant denomination recently urged lawmakers to rein in “erotic liberty.” The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments in April and could decide by June whether gay couples can marry, and national opinion polls show U.S. voters increasingly unopposed to gay rights. Yet lawmakers in a handful of states are backing longshot legislation targeting gay rights, doubling down on the culture wars. Most, if not all, of the efforts are led by Republicans. The bills are more political theatre than serious policy. Few seem to have widespread support among lawmakers, and senior Republicans are not adopting these efforts as their own. In Georgia, well-funded business groups oppose them. Still, the legislation remains popular with vocal and organized voting blocks in states or parts of the states where
they’ve been proposed. But any political points they score could come at a price. If the bills’ backers manage to force a sharp debate in coming weeks, and the Supreme Court rules in favor of gay marriage a few months later, supporters of the bills would be exposed to criticism that they’ve been fighting for a fringe issue. “On no issue during my 40-year career have opinions moved as rapidly as they have on the issue of the morality of gay relationships and ultimately gay marriage,” said Whit Ayres, a Republican consultant for Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and the National Rifle Association. “When you have conservative organizations like the U.S. military and the Boy Scouts openly accepting gay members, the debate is close to being over.” Not in Georgia. In a devotional delivered to newly convened lawmakers, the former president of the Southern Baptist Convention urged them to defend the freedom to act on religious beliefs, though he stopped short of endorsing legislation that supporters say would do precisely that. “We are a living in a society that is on a collision course with a choice between erotic liberty and religious liberty,” the Rev. Bryant Wright told lawmakers. “... Your role in government is about restraining sin.” Georgia politicians rejected tougher legislation last year, avoiding a showdown that occurred over a similar bill in Arizona, where Gov. Jan Brewer vetoed a measure the Republicancontrolled Statehouse had adopted. This year, the toughest measure comes in Texas, where Republican state Rep. Cecil Bell has proposed stripping state and local officials of their salaries if they issue or honor same-sex marriage licenses. In 2005, Texas voters approved an amendment to the state constitution banning gay marriage, but a federal judge struck it down last year. The judge stayed his ruling until an appeals court could consider the issue. Republican lawmakers in South Carolina, Virginia and Utah have proposed giving government officials or wedding celebrants the right to opt out of gay nuptials if participating violates

Strange’s office had sought to put Granade’s order on hold until the U.S. Supreme Court rules. The state argued there would be widespread confusion if couple’s got married, but the marriages were later ruled invalid. Granade said it was inappropriate, in her view, to continue to delay. “As long as a stay is in place, same-sex couples and their families remain in a state of limbo with respect to adoption, child care and custody, medical decisions, employment and health benefits, future tax implications, inheritance and many other rights associated with marriage,” she wrote.

be issuing them absent a stay. “It’s aggravating. The judge ruled and everybody got so excited and now, this,” Sisson said. The stay will expire Feb. 9 unless the court extends it. Granade said within that time that she will issue a separate order clarifying the effect of her ruling on those seeking and issuing marriage licenses across Alabama. Lawyers for the Mobile couple that brought the original suit requested the clarification after the Alabama Probate Judges’ Association advised judges that they should not issue licenses to samesex couples. The group maintained that ruling declaring the ban unconstitutional only applies to the parties in that case, and that it doesn’t require judges to issue marriage licenses to other samesex couples. “As probate judges, our duty is to issue marriage licenses in accordance with Alabama law and that means we cannot legally issue marriage licenses to same sex couples,” Monroe County Probate Judge Greg Norris said. Some judges disagreed with that view and indicated they were prepared to issue licenses on Monday. David Kennedy, an attorney for the plaintiffs in the case, said the judges’ association needed to “embrace reality” that the ban had been struck down. Granade had ruled Friday that Alabama’s statutory and constitutional bans on gay marriage were in violation of the U.S. Constitution. That ruling was the latest in a string of victories for same-sex marriage advocates around the Deep South. Still, the judge’s order reverberated in a state considered one of the Bible Belt’s most socially conservative, drawing praise and disbelief from some and scorn from others. The ruling striking down the marriage ban came out of a case filed by Cari Searcy and Kim McKeand of Mobile. The couple said the ban prevented Alabama from recognizing their 2008 California marriage and Searcy as a parent to the son they had together. McKeand gave birth to the child in 2005, but the court’s rejected Searcy’s adoption petition because the couple was not legally married.

Gay Port Director Becomes State’s Commerce Secretary TALLAHASSEE — Gov. Rick Scott has appointed Miami-Dade’s veteran port chief to head up Florida’s economic-development arm. Bill Johnson will lead Enterprise Florida and become the state’s top corporate recruiter, despite having no direct recruiting experience. Johnson replaces the out-going and enormously popular Gray Swoope as not only the CEO of Enterprise Florida, but also as the state’s Commerce Secretary. Enterprise Florida is responsible for providing relocation packages and hiring incentives to both attract and retain large-scale employers. “Bill has a clear record of creating
opportunities in our state and is laserfocused on our goal to make Florida the global destination for jobs,” Scott said in a statement released last Thursday. “I am confident he will help us on our mission to beat Texas to become the No. 1 state for job creation.” Johnson’s contract calls for him to earn $265,000 a year with a potential performance based annual bonus of an additional $100,000. A Republican, Johnson calls South Beach home, but isn’t expected to spend much time there as the new commerce chief. “You’ll see me in the Panhandle. You’ll see me in the Keys. You’ll see me in Jacksonville,” Johnson told the Enterprise Florida board meeting last Thursday. “You’ll see me around the state. You’ll see me listening.” Insiders said Johnson and Scott formed a close relationship during the push to build the recently completed Port Miami tunnel, funded with both local and state dollars. A year ago, Johnson was the cover story of the Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce’s newsletter in which he claimed to have never hit a “glass ceiling” in his career. “I think my perspective has been greatly appreciated in terms of diversity in the workforce,” the newsletter quoted him as saying. In his remarks to the Enterprise board, Johnson played down Republican partisanship within Gov. Scott’s administration. “I don’t consider this governor a politician,” Johnson said. “I consider this governor a leader.” Johnson had joined a state-run municipal retirement system in 2010, that would have forced his retirement for the port position next year. In 2013, he was projected to be eligible to earn a one-time payment of $915,000, and a monthly retirement benefit of $14,254 for life.

Orman’s wife, Kathy Travis, attended the event, with Orman acknowledging that her in-laws embraced her.. “Of all my accomplishments and successes, my greatest success is knowing who I am and who I love,” Orman said.” Earlier in the day, Temple Beth El Rabbi Dan Levin married Eric Gottlieb and David Hanowitz, who sat in the front row and were introduced to the gathered crowd. “We found love later in life,” Gottlieb said afterward, accepting congratulations. Hava Holzhauer, regional director of the Florida Anti-Defamation League, moderated the two-hour discussion. In addition to Levin, the panel included Nadine Smith, executive director of Equality Florida; Abraham Foxman, ADL national director; David Barkey, southwest ADL civil rights attorney; Rev. Andrew J. TALLAHASSEE — Florida Competes, a grassroots effort that includes business leaders, lawmakers, faith leaders, members of the LGBT community and concerned residents, has linked arms across party lines with a single goal: to pass the Florida Competitive Workforce Act (FCWA). The purpose of the FCWA is to amend the state’s current non-discrimination laws to include sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. Even as Florida’s LGBT community advances toward equality, particularly with newly legal same-sex marriage, it is legal under current state law to fire or refuse to hire someone because they are gay or transgender. According to the campaign by Florida Compete, this is patently unfair. “No hardworking American, including those who are gay or transgender, should have to live

OCA RATON — More than 1,000 people turned out to hear lesbian financial advisor and media superstar Suze Orman speak at Temple Beth El in Boca Raton. The panel discussion centered on civil rights for Florida’s LGBT community now that same-sex marriage has become legal in the state. “For the first time in my history of giving talks about money, I want you to know about the gay lady,” she said at Moving Forward Together, the theme of the event. The audience, comprised of straight, gay, lesbian and transgender folk, reinforced the success of that theme. As Orman offered bits and pieces of advice on financial matters, it was her own personal story that warmed the attendees. Life wasn’t always so glamorous for the multimillionaire investment guru. More revealing, Orman didn’t even know what the word lesbian meant when she was taunted with the term as a child. “I worked in my father’s deli, and a woman there asked me to go to a gay liberation celebration,” she said. “I had come home.” After formally coming out at the University of

TALLAHASSEE -- The Social Security Administration has now updated its website to officially recognize marriage licenses of same-sex couples in Florida. This means that state marriage licenses issued or recognized as of January 5, 2015 can now be used to obtain a legal name change on a social security card. This recently issued federal directive from the SSA authorizes any local social security office to accommodate a name change request. In order to receive an updated social security card, applicants must bring their certified marriage license and a photo ID to your local Social Security office. Once a new social security card has been issued, it can be taken to the state Department of Motor Vehicles as proof of identity for an updated driver’s license.

executives Florida wants to have basking in our sunshine. Based on his performance, Johnson is eligible for an additional $100,000 in bonuses. Obviously Scott and Johnson are very good friends. It always good to see a political advisory coming around into the daylight. In other news, it was with a great deal of sadness that we learned that power couple Jackson Padgett and Mark Negrete have separated. One of the most popular bar owners in town, Jackson and Mark have had a very long run as both business partners and companions, and we wish them nothing but happiness—individually or otherwise. The couple was seen in separate corners at their b. Bar and Grille several nights ago, so at least the running of the business stays a close partnership. In our last gasp department: Last week, we reported on Laurie Whittaker (of Sidelines fame) having a run-in with her landlord, Tony Dee. Her partner Jen sent out an email to the various commissioners in town and we reported on the facts the email contained. Tony Dee phoned to express his outrage that he had not been contacted before publication of the piece, and was told that we fully intended to contact him for this week’s column, and offered him the full platform to counter Whittaker’s claims. Dee’s official response was “No comment.” Well, that certainly clears the air. A lawsuit is alleged to be pending…. Until next week….

community in general. As far back as 1992, Huckabee stated that he felt that homosexuality “is an aberrant, unnatural, and sinful lifestyle, and we now know it can pose a dangerous public health risk”. He continues to support that position currently. Moreover, Huckabee has said that if the GOP does not follow his lead on this issue, he will run for president as an independent. “If the Republicans want to lose guys like me and a whole bunch of still God-fearing, Bible-believing people, go ahead and just abdicate on (the gay marriage) issue… then, at that point, you lose me,” he said on the American Family Association’s “Today’s Issues” radio show. “I’m gone. I’ll become an independent. I’ll start finding people that have guts to stand. I’m tired of this.” Currently based on his appeal to evangelical Christians, Huckabee is the leader in probable GOP candidates, running ahead of Jeb Bush, Chris Christie, and Paul Ryan.

included the closing of schools rather than desegregating them. Texas Attorney General John Ben Shepperd organized a campaign to generate legal obstacles to implementation of desegregation. And Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus called out the state’s National Guard in an attempt to block black students who were trying to enter Little Rock Central High School. In the end, of course, those tactics were unsuccessful. Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of the University of California Law School, Irvine, said states would have no options if the Supreme Court decided that laws prohibiting same-sex marriage violated the Constitution. “The Supreme Court made it clear that its ruling was the law of the land. This will be no different,” Chemerinsky told USA Today. It isn’t the first time that Huckabee has attacked the same-sex marriage issue in particular or the LGBT

ormer Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, currently ranked as the most likely 2016 GOP candidate for president, has suggested to state governors and legislators that they find ways to resist any Supreme Court decision that recognized same-sex marriage as a constitutional right. While doing publicity for his upcoming book, God, Guns, Grits, and Gravy, just published by St. Martin Press, Huckabee told USA Today’s Capitol Download that the court’s decision should not just be accepted as law. “Rather than just immediately capitulate to nine people in robes, and what it will probably be is five people in robes against four people who disagree ... then you have a very, very divided court,” he said. “Do we really surrender the entire American system of government to five people, unelected, appointed for life, with no consequences for the decisions they make? The founders never intended for there to be such incredible, almost unlimited power, put in the hands of so few people.” During the same interview, Huckabee made an analogy with the controversial Dred Scott case where, in 1857, the Supreme Court ruled that no African-American could be considered a citizen of the United States. Since the ruling was superseded by the Civil Rights Act of 1864, Huckabee is now pointing to it as a sample of “historical precedent” which illustrates how pushing back against a decision is possible. “We have a constitutional amendment in our constitution,” he said. “Do we want to hold to that? Do we want to put it before a referendum of the people?’ I mean, there are a lot of different angles to pursue it. (Or) you could just surrender and say, ‘OK, we just agree that the court is right.’” According to a variety of legal scholars, Huckabee’s argument does not hold judicial merit. One notable example is the Supreme Court decision on Brown v. Brown in which the court mandated the integration of schools. In Virginia, Senator Harry F. Byrd, Sr. organized the Massive Resistance movement that

Bert Kreischer is known as the greatest partier of this generation. He was named “the top partier” during his sixth year at Florida State University, the “top party school.” This distinction led Kreischer to be the basis for the popular, debaucherous film National Lampoon’s Van Wilder. ennifer Aniston has been working towards the performance she gives as chronic-pain-sufferer and pharma addict Claire in Cake (Cinelou) for a number of years. She certainly showed her acting chops in indies such as Friends With Money and The Good Girl, so consider Claire the icing on the, well, cake. In Cake, Claire has the disfiguring scars to show from the horrific car accident that killed her young son. Other scars, invisible to the naked eye, are increasingly evident. There’s the dissolution of her marriage to Jason (Chris Messina), her complex relationship with her housekeeper/ enabler Silvana (Adriana Barazza), and her open hostility towards those trying to help her, including support group leader Annette (Felicity Huffman) and physical therapist Bonnie (Mamie Gummer). Oh, and there’s also the ghost of late support group member Nina (Anna Kendrick). Clair, who struggles to separate her dreams and hallucinations from real life, lives in a drug-induced haze, so her increasingly erratic behavior gets her in all sorts of trouble, including seeking out and beginning a relationship Roy (Sam Worthington) and Casey (Evan O’Toole), the husband and son Nina left behind. Like Julianne Moore, Aniston blossoms under the direction of queer filmmakers (see The Object of My Affection and The Good Girl), and she does so working with Daniel Barnz. Cake is not an easy movie to digest, but Aniston frosts it with a career-high performance.

merican Sniper (WB) was not the best movie of 2014. Nor does it deserve the Oscar nomination for Best Picture that it received. (Say something nice, say something nice) it is, however, a vast improvement over Clint Eastwood’s other 2014 stinker of a movie, the junk-box jukebox movie musical Jersey

American Sniper
Boys (now that feels better). Based on the book by the late Navy SEAL Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper in an almost Oscar-worthy performance), American Sniper moves back and forth in time; arriving at its inevitable tragic ending in February 2013. In the first few minutes, we observe Kyle poised to shoot and kill an Iraqi woman and child, seen carrying a grenade, in Fallujah, on one of his four tours of duty. For the record, during Kyle’s four tours, he racked up 1,000 days in the country and more than 160 kills. There’s a quick flashback to his childhood where he impressed his father with his hunter’s instincts when he killed a deer and later defended his brother from a schoolyard bully. Then we’re back to Kyle catching a girlfriend cheating on him, enlisting in the SEALS as a “pissed-off patriot,” training rigorously, meeting Taya (Sienna Miller) and falling in love, and then the events of 9/11. Shipped off to Iraq Kyle proves himself to his commanding officers and rises through the ranks to become the character described in the title. For all its pretense of being about the toll war takes on those sent off to battle, American Sniper is, at its heart a movie that celebrates war
(did you expect something different from war horse Eastwood?). Good guys versus bad guys, body count, blood and gore, bullets and bombs – you get the picture. At 40 minutes shorter, the misguided American Sniper would probably have been right on target.

f you were a gay man in NYC in 1981, a city far grittier and more dangerous than it is now, the news that probably caught your attention was the story in The New York Times about the discovery of the “rare cancer seen in 41 homosexuals.” But, as A Most Violent Year (A24/Participant), the new film from J.C. Chandor (director of Margin Call, starring out-actor Zachary Quinto) indicates, the rest of New York had other things on its mind, including the regular hijacking and theft of tankers carrying heating oil and other petrol products. Beginning with the commandeering of a truck at a toll booth, and the brutal assault of driver Julian (Elyes Gabel), A Most Violent Year focuses on what promises to be a potentially prosperous year for refinery owner Abel (Oscar Isaac), an immigrant trying to attain the American dream, and his wife Anna (Jessica Chastain
channeling Jennifer Lawrence in American Hustle), the daughter of a Brooklyn gangster. Striking a deal with Hasidic businessman Josef (Jerry Adler) to purchase another refinery, Abel pays a portion of the purchase price with his life savings and then must come up with the rest from various sources in order to close the deal. But that will be easier said than done as everything that can possibly go wrong does. Abel’s business is under investigation by District Attorney Lawrence (David Oyelowo) who is in the process of bringing a case against the company. Abel’s competitors, including Peter (Allesandro Nivolo), are as cutthroat as possible. Driver Julian goes missing after thwarting another hijacking by using an unregistered weapon. If that wasn’t enough, the bank on which Abel was depending for a loan backs out of the deal. A Most Violent Year is nothing if not a story of perseverance. There is violence and death (not to mention a high-speed truck chase) and corruption. But there is also honesty and dedication and the desire to help others (while helping yourself, of course). Filmmaker Chandor has become a master of suspense (see All Is Lost) and A Most Violent Year is no exception.

W
hile Los Angeles may claim to be the film and television capital of the world, South Florida is no slouch in those departments. Our warm weather, tropical setting and architecture continue to draw film and television crews. From as early as flickering black and white images of the Spanish American War in 1898 through such recent films and television shows as Dexter, Burn Notice and the recent Nickelodeon kids’ show Every Witch Way, Florida is a favorite for film location shoots. You might even say that films and television shows set in South Florida helped define those areas. Sure there were college kids coming to Fort Lauderdale for spring break long before Connie Francis warbled the title tune to Where the Boys Are, but that movie cemented our town’s reputation as the spring break capitol. There’s no doubt Miami Vice helped revive the titular city’s reputation as the home for cool (Golden Girls not so much). With the rest of the country in deep freeze for a few months, why not spend some time exploring former film locations? In many cases the landmarks have disappeared, but a surprising number of them remain, more or less intact. The following locations are all within a few minute’s drive of Wilton Manors (and in one case, actually located in the heart of WilMa), making it possible to visit them all in a single day. Start with the previously mentioned, Where the Boys Are, which held its world premiere at The Gateway Theater (1820 E. Sunrise), where you can still catch first-run and art-house flicks. Younger readers may not know of this film, but you should watch it for camp value alone. Then you’ll better appreciate the fact that you can still head up to the second level of the Elbo Room (241 Fort Lauderdale Blvd.) where many of the movie’s scenes were filmed. While the Yankee Clipper may have been renovated and became the Sheraton Fort Lauderdale Beach Hotel and now B Ocean Resort (1140 Seabreeze Blvd.), The Wreck Bar, located in the basement of the boat-shaped hotel, still

tease can’t be overlooked. Although scenes in the film’s strip club, The Eager Beaver, were filmed primarily at Flix nightclub in Pompano Beach (the now shuttered Fuji Sushi at 4051 N. Federal), Moore’s character lived in a run-down trailer park. The producers chose the Middle River Trailer Park, right in the heart of Wilton Manors, as the home for Demi Moore’s character. They found it in such disrepair that they didn’t think the audience would believe that she lived there, so they spruced up the park, for the film. The collection of falling down trailers, was located off Northeast 24th St. Even though the city tried to condemn the property, it was the gentrification by the LGBT community that finally spelled its demise. The owners were behind in taxes and couldn’t afford to bring the property up to code, so they were forced to sell the land. A group of investors offered to buy the land to build a gay resort. The economy tanked, so did those plans. Eventually the Belle Isle condo development took over the majority of the space. In our next column we’ll look at some more film sites throughout the state, making for a day trip or a long weekend of exploring film locations.

Orpheus Descending
January 28, 2015
Tennessee Williams’ 1957 Broadway play involves a wild-spirited boy descending into a conventional community of the South. The play is a modern retelling of the ancient Greek Orpheus myth. A young, erotic boy named Val gets a job in a dry goods store run by a middle-aged woman named Lady. The awakening of passion, love, and life in Lady has tragic consequences for all. 7:00 p.m. Lowndes Shakespeare Center. 812 E. Rollins St. Orlando. 32803.

DITCH THE DAIRY

ood advice is always worth repeating. And when that advice is based on objective fact and written by an expert on that subject, it’s worth considering if not following. Dr. Don Fisher, D.O., a leader in the practice of Age Management Medicine and medical director of The Best Program in Fort Lauderdale, offered up both good advice and compelling reasons why we should ditch dairy and all milk products in a recent edition of his blog. “Milk is for baby cows, not for humans,” says Dr. Fisher. “Milk has a protein in it called casein which aggravates inflammation and breaks down into a substance called casomorphins — peptides [which are] are addictive. That’s why patients tell me they cannot give up their cheese; they are addicted to it — literally.” The physician recounts his own health dilemma two years or so ago: He was over 300 lbs, suffering from high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma, osteoarthritis and GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, a digestive disorder that typically causes heartburn or acid indigestion). WHAT’S AT THE END OF YOUR FORK? Dr. Fisher made the drastic decision to radically change his nutrition by giving up all dairy products, becoming a vegetarian, and exercising. Today, two years later, he walks 5-6 miles daily on what is no longer a painful osteoarthritic knee, has achieved a healthy weight, looks and feels the picture of health, and is off all the medications used to treat his previous health conditions. “There is no medication stronger or more powerful than what you put at the end of your fork,” says the age management expert. Since it worth repeating, here’s Dr. Fisher’s advice: If the idea of rapidly removing all dairy products from your diet seems
Garden are excellent vegan margarines. Yogurt: WholeSoy, Wildwood, and Nancy’s all make soy yogurts and there are numerous other regional brands of vegan yogurt. WholeSoy might be the tastiest of the bunch and comes in both single-serving containers and 24-ounce tubs. Milk: Soy, rice, almond, coconut, and even hemp seed milks are widely available, not just at natural food stores but also at just about
daunting, you can ease into it. Think about the dairy products you currently consume: chances are that there’s one or two such foods you love, but a dozen others you eat regularly that you’re not crazy about. If, for example, you regularly consume whole milk, yogurt, ice cream, American cheese slices, butter, and cheese pizza, it might be that yogurt and pizza are the only foods from this list that you’re especially fond of. So get rid of the others, and you’re immediately more than halfway to being dairy-free! But the real key to success in eliminating dairy foods involves not cutting them out, but rather crowding them out with superior non-dairy alternatives. And luckily, there are all sorts of non-dairy products on the market that are truly wonderful: Butter: Earth Balance and Soy
every supermarket. They’re sold both in aseptic juice boxes stored at room temperature, and in conventional milk cartons in the dairy case. Note that “coconut milk” may refer to a pour-it-on-your-cereal milk alternative that’s similar to soy milk, or it may refer to canned coconut milk which is a much thicker and fattier product perfect for Thai curries. Cheese: There are several nondairy cheeses on the market, but always check the label for casein or sodium caseinate. Casein is a milk protein that is used in some soy cheeses. Happily, two of the best nondairy cheeses —Daiya and Wayfare — are vegan. Daiya comes shredded in 8-ounce bags, available in mozzarella and cheddar flavors. The stuff melts beautifully and is amazing on pizza and in quesadillas. Wayfare’s “We

Can’t Say it’s Cheese,” is a spreadable product, perfect for grilled cheese sandwiches and mac & cheese dishes. Both brands are widely available in the United States. Ice Cream: There are a number of excellent brands: Turtle Mountain’s “Purely Decadent” pints are outstanding, and conventional ice cream producer Double Rainbow makes several excellent varieties from soy milk. Also, both So Delicious and Tufutti make vegan versions of those junky but delicious ice cream sandwiches you ate as a kid — you won’t even be able to tell the difference! Plus don’t forget about sorbets, which tend to be vegan and are lighter and often more flavorful than ice cream. If you love the flavor of coconuts, you owe it to yourself to try Luna and Larry’s Coconut Bliss. Cream Cheese, Sour Cream, and Mayo: Once again, you’re in luck. Both Follow Your Heart and Tofutti make superb vegan versions of cream cheese and sour cream, which are available at Whole Foods Market and Trader Joe’s, as well as many natural food stores. There are also several vegan brands of mayonnaise, including a sensational and widely-distributed product called “Vegenaise,” which is made by Follow Your Heart. Coffee Creamer: There’s no need to put cream in your coffee: both So Delicious and Silk make vegan creamers that blend perfectly into coffee. Pudding: Bestselling cookbook author Mark Bittman concocted perhaps the best chocolate pudding recipe you’ll ever try, and it doesn’t contain a drop of milk. ZenSoy makes refrigerated vegan pudding cups made from soy milk and almond milk.
