Bill Would Create LGBTI Envoy in U.S. State Department NEW YORK — U.S. lawmakers in both houses of Congress have introduced a bill to protect and promote the rights of the international lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. The International Human Rights Defense Act, spearheaded by Sen. Edward Markey of Massachusetts and Rep. Alan Lowenthal of California, both Democrats, would appoint a special envoy within the U.S. Department of State to coordinate efforts to prevent discrimination and advance the rights of LGBT people worldwide. “When President Obama addressed the nation and committed to defending the human rights of the LGBT community, we made that commitment to the world,” Markey said in a statement, referring to the State of the Union address earlier this month. “With the rights of the LGBT community under attack around the globe, we must stand hand-in-hand with them in the struggle for recognition and equality everywhere,” he said. The same bill was introduced by Markey last year but never reached a vote. Its re-introduction this year comes as talks about the initiative are underway at the State Department. If passed, the legislation would direct the Department of State to make preventing and responding to discrimination and violence against the international LGBT community a foreign policy priority, as well as coordinate efforts to promote LGBT rights globally. In 2013, India re-criminalised homosexuality while Nigeria, Uganda, and Gambia have all passed laws that make homosexuality a crime punishable with life imprisonment. In seven countries, homosexuality is punishable by death, the statement said. In 2013, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law prohibiting the spreading of “gay propaganda” among minors, causing outrage and protests among rights activists in Russia and in the West.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah Gov. Gary Herbert says any state legislation protecting gay rights must also protect religious liberties. Herbert made the remarks in his annual State of the State address Wednesday night, a day after the Mormon church made a national appeal for a similar balance between anti-discrimination proposals and legal protections for those who object. The church’s announcement made huge waves in Utah, where the governor and most lawmakers are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Several bills addressing gay rights and religious rights are pending in the Utah Legislature this year. Legislative leaders say they may be combined. The Republican governor says he’s confident the state’s elected officials can work together with religious groups and the LGBT community to find a policy that treats all people with dignity and respect.

married couples. Among the changes, it will allow civil union partners to inherit each other’s property, join a partner’s health plan and receive pension benefits. Civil unions have been recognized in several countries across South America, but conservative Chile has been slower to change. It decriminalized gay sex in 1999 and the killing of a gay man in 2012 set off a national debate that prompted Congress to pass a hate crimes law. Argentina and Uruguay are the only South American nations to allow full marriage by gays and lesbians.

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Exxon Mobil Corp. has updated its corporate policies to protect employees from discrimination for sexual orientation or gender identity. Spokesman Allan Jeffers said Friday that the Irving, Texas-based oil giant added these protections to comply with federal law. In July, President Barack Obama signed an executive order that expanded protections for gay and transgender employees of federal contractors. Exxon Mobil, which has federal contracts worth millions of dollars, had said it would comply with the order but wouldn’t say if it would formalize that with revised corporate policies. The company had maintained that its stated zero-tolerance standards ensured protections without having to specify them. Deena Fidas of the Human Rights Campaign called the update a “calibrated response” to maintain Exxon’s federal contracts.

ANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — Chilean lawmakers gave final approval on Wednesday to a bill that recognizes civil unions between samesex couples. The legislation now goes to President Michelle Bachelet, who is Michelle Bachelet, President of Chile expected to sign it. Government spokesman Alvaro Elizalde welcomed the bill’s passage as “a breakthrough that we are proud of as a government.” The measure has been in the works for four years and will give same-sex and unmarried couples many of the rights granted to

spinning on its axis,” said state Sen. Cherie Buckner-Webb, Idaho’s only black lawmaker, during the closing statement. “In the words of my tradition, I would ask we would be unified in our quest for justice ... Move forward with grace, vigor, wisdom and passion. It’s fair, it’s justice and it’s worthy of your ‘yes’ vote.” In the end, Republican lawmakers decided that the bill’s lack of definition of the addition of the four words was too great of a risk to the religious community. Primarily, lawmakers said that they feared the law would force a person to go against their held beliefs. On Monday, House Assistant Majority Leader Brent Crane asked lobbyist Bill Roden — who presented the bill to the committee— for the definition of sexual orientation. Roden, a Boise attorney who served in the Idaho Senate for four terms, declined to give an answer and said he wouldn’t draw a specific line. Crane said Thursday that it was a defining moment on how he would vote. “Definitions do matter, words do matter,” he said. “If you’re going to add words, we need to know what those definitions are.” Rep. John McCrostie of Boise objected to the suspicions surrounding the bill’s impact on religion. As Idaho’s only openly gay lawmaker, McCrostie said unlike his peers, when he goes home each night, he’s at risk of being denied service at a restaurant. “This isn’t the gay guy giving the gay vote. You don’t have to know I’m gay all the time. What you need to know when we’re talking education is that I have been a teacher for 12 years,” McCrostie said. “When we’re talking about updating the Idaho Human’s Right Act, that’s when you need to know that I’m gay.” Committee chairman Rep. Tom Loertscher said cruelty has no place in society. “I am calling on people everywhere to get over themselves and to get past it,” said the Iona Republican. Currently, 19 states have passed anti-discrimination laws that include sexual-orientation and gender-identity protections. Meanwhile, 10 Idaho cities have bypassed waiting on the state by approving their own anti-discrimination ordinances.

AKLAND PARK—Bruce Bogan, the original owner of Copy This print shop, has died of cardiac arrest after a long fight with heart disease. He was 53. Bogan had previously had a massive heart attack and underwent corrective surgery in February of 2012 at Broward General Hospital, where he had a valve blockage removed and a stent implanted to support his heart function. Bruce Bogan was a native of Brooklyn, New York, where he ran a successful printing enterprise before relocating his business to Wilton Manors in 2001. Originally called Planet Express, the business rebranded itself as Copy This in 2007, and became a staple on Wilton Drive. In 2010, Bogan was given the “Keeping the Drive Alive Business of the Quarter Recognition Award” by the Wilton Manors’ Main Street Association. At the time, Bogan said, ““My grandfather was a printer, my father was a printer, and I’ve been doing this ever since I was 19. I’m just going to keep going until you get used to me.” In November, 2011, Bogan won

the grand prize in the first “Dancing with the South Florida Stars” dancing competition, the annual fund-raising event for the Brian Neal Fitness and Health Foundation HIV charity. MMP founder and CEO Bobby Blair remembers Bruce as “a very close friend to Brian and me. He invited our media business to Wilton Drive so we could work together, share office space and provide his incredible talents to help us produce our magazines and newspapers with his amazing creativity and genuine good spirit. “It was at a time when we really needed help, and I will forever appreciate, admire and be thankful to Bruce that he was in my life. His spirit will be with me forever. Brian and I extend are warm condolences to Billy Sand who we have watched love, encourage and help Bruce over the past few very difficult years. Billy’s love and commitment to Bruce was a wonderful thing to watch as they together showed all of us what true love really is.” Bogan is survived by his life partner Billy Sand, owner of DinerBy-The Sea restaurant. Funeral arrangements are pending.

TAMPA — Hillsborough County Commissioner Kevin Beckner will receive Equality Florida‘s Voice For Equality Award at the LGBT advocacy group’s 9th Annual Tampa Gala on Feb. 21. A financial planner and former police officer, Beckner became Hillsborough County’s first openly gay commissioner in 2008. Little did he know how long it would take him to achieve some of his goals, whether it be extending domestic partner benefits to county employees or including sexual orientation in the county’s nondiscrimination policies. Only after he was re-elected in 2012 was Beckner able to persuade the commission to repeal the ban against a local Gay Pride festival. In 2014, sexual orientation and gender identity were finally added to the county’s nondiscrimination policies. And in October of that same year, Hillsborough established a domestic partnership registry to ensure hospital visitation rights for unmarried gay couples. In 2005, Beckner married his longtime partner, Hillsborough Sheriff’s Sgt. Gil Sainz, in Canada. More than 200 corporate and individual sponsors will participate in this year’s gala to honor Beckner, including presenting sponsor PNC Bank, as well as a number of other leading law firms, banks, insurance companies, technology firms and community organizations. The event will be held at TPepin’s Hospitality Centre in Tampa.

The ceremony, which involves 100 LGBT and straight couples from 18 U.S. states, as well as London, Italy, and South America, is being held to commemorate marriage equality in Florida. David and Ryan live in Coconut Creek. Ryan is a physician recruiter from upstate New York and David is a licensed social worker from Queens. They met in an American Online chatroom about 10 years ago and were married in 2011 outside Boston. They still have pizza delivered on each wedding anniversary. Their daughter Nikki is four years old and was adopted last April in what the couple calls “the first sequential child adoption by a same-sex couple out of foster care in Broward County.” She was fostered in 2012 and was the second child placed in the couple’s care. For both Ryan and David, the institution of marriage is significant, and David was very clear with Ryan from the beginning of their relationship that he wanted a family. “For me it (marriage) is a matter of equal protection,” said David. “Marriage protects my family. I don’t want our daughter to be penalized. It’s a contract that says the government will protect you as a family.” As a licensed social worker and now foster parent, David has become critical of the revolving door of case workers coming in and out of the family’s home. “It doesn’t seem necessary,” he said. “The bureaucracy hinders your life. Everything has to be photographed. You need permission to go to Disney World. You live under a microscope. It’s hard enough just being a parent and learning about your child.”

he primary election for the mayor of Fort Lauderdale will take place next Tuesday, February 10, 2015, and the incumbent mayor, Jack Seiler, is facing a serious challenge for the first time since he was elected into office in 2009. Ironically, Seilor’s problem doesn’t come from his challengers, but from his own performance of late. You may recall that Seilor’s first blunder was his ‘no” vote on a resolution sponsored by commissioner Dean Trantalis last year encouraging the state legislature and Governor Rick Scott to allow same-sex marriage in Florida. It was a purely ceremonial resolution, with no real bite to its bark. Yet, as Trantalis suggested at the time, the city of Fort Lauderdale, the country’s Gay Mecca, needed to send a message to Tallahassee signaling its support of those in the LGBT community who have supported Fort Lauderdale for all these years. Seilor voted against the resolution, pointing to his creation of a domestic partnership registry and support of civil unions in the state as proof of his alliance with the LGBT community. What Seilor didn’t get then, and doesn’t still realize, is that neither a domestic partnership nor a civil union is the same as being legally married. Only legal marriage brings with it all the Federal health and tax benefits already available to heterosexual married couples. To some that may seem nothing more than ancient history now that samesex marriage has become legal in Florida as of last month. But remember, on January 6, while Orlando’s mayor Buddy Dyer hosted a mass marriage on the steps of Orlando’s City Hall, with a reading by District 4 City Commissioner Patty Sheehan, a blessing delivered by Reverend Kathy Schmitz from The First Unitarian Church of Orlando

voting against the measure. The measure made international headlines when the city ticketed 90-year-old World War II veteran Arnold Abbott for illegally feeding the homeless. His Love Thy Neighbor non-profit has been feeding thousands of homeless since he began the program in 2003. Seiler told the Sun-Sentinel newspaper that “the media’s ignoring the fact that there are daily feedings taking place in the city of Fort Lauderdale in full compliance with the law.” The city’s tourism board was not impressed. “It is reading badly,” according to Nicki Grossman, president of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau. “It is not pleasant getting emails from people Mayor Seiler saying we’re not (above) and coming to your truck sign protesting city because you his position have no heart.” on same-sex And then there marriage is the continulast year ing controversy and performances by the Orlando Gay over Seilor’s plans to replace the Beach Chorus, Seilor did nothing. Pride South Florida will conduct the Fort Lauderdale Pride event under the theme of ‘We’re Coming Out,’ as October 11 is in fact National Coming Out Day. It is also the weekend of the Fort Lauderdale Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.” Fort Lauderdale Pride Chairman Norm Kent admitted that moving the date was not easy for Pride South Florida. “(It was) difficult, but it would be detrimental and devastating to have two groups competing for Pride patrons a week apart in the middle of June,” he said. “So we adapted to the situation. Wilton Manors Mayor Gary Resnick told the Agenda: “Stonewall is tremendously important to the city and our community. We’re thrilled that some wonderful volunteers with experience putting on this event, once again stepped forward to partner with the city. The official Wilton Manors Stonewall 2015 will be administrated by the Island City Foundation, a division of Wilton Manors Entertainment Group. Last year, Pride South Florida produced the event, and has been shrouded in controversy amid allegations of misappropriations of funds and other improprieties by prior board members. The event is alleged to have not produced a profit for several years as well. Recently, the entire board of directors of Pride South Florida was replaced, with attorney and SFGN publisher Norm Kent taking over control of the non-profit last September. It was then that planning began on the 2015 Stonewall Event. In mid-January, Kent issued a press release under the banner of Stonewall Pride Wilton Manors that said, “Heeding the advice of a host of community non-profit organizations, Pride South Florida announced today that it will be hosting only one singular pride weekend this year, in mid-June. Entitled ‘Free Pride 2015,’ the group will be holding an open-air, one day outdoor festival in Holiday Park in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday, June 13, to be followed by the Stonewall Parade down Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors on the afternoon of Sunday, June 14. There was only one problem. Kent had not secured the date with the City of Wilton Manors nor received their nod to produce the event. In fact, he did not officially offer his presentation for Pride South Florida to administer the event until a city meeting on January 27, two weeks after the press release. While hearing Kent’s proposal on that date, the city had been heavily in talks with the Wilton Manors Entertainment Group to create a new divi-

The Florida State Fair has been an annual tradition in Tampa since 1904, a fact contributing to this year’s theme, “A Timeless Tradition.” The fair provides ample amounts of fun in the form of rides, games, concerts, eating, drinking, and shopping. This year’s event includes a half-sized replica of the Vietnam War Memorial Wall, a carousel made of balloons, and additional “comfort stations” throughout the fairgrounds. 10:00 a.m. Florida State Fairgrounds. 4802 U.S. 301 N. TEEN TROUBLE

A

s with his nuanced 2004 masterwork Mysterious Skin, queer filmmaker Gregg Araki’s latest, White Bird in a Blizzard (Magnolia Home Entertainment), now available on Blu-ray, is the writer/director’s adaptation of a novel. In this case, it’s Laura Kasischke’s minor book of the same title. In late 1988, Katrina (Shailene Woodley) was 17 when her mother Eve (Eva Green) disappeared. As Katrina, a former fat girl describes it, just as she “was coming into her body,” her mother “stepped out of hers.” Eve left her car in the garage, didn’t leave a note and simply vanished. Of course, she’d been threatening to do so for years. Unhappily married to Brock (Christopher Meloni), Eve was becoming increasingly despondent and her once loving relationship with Kat turned competitive and full of resentment. A typical teenager, Kat thought nothing of disrespecting her mother, which only made matters worse. After Eve caught Kat and malapropism-spouting boy next door/pothead Phil (Shiloh Fernandez) having sex, her already strange behavior gets weirder, until the day she goes missing. Brock and Kat enlist the aid of Detective Scieziesciez (Thomas Jane) and Kat starts to see therapist Dr. Thaler (Angela Bassett). During her therapy sessions, Kat tells the doctor about her recurring nightmares involving Eve and a snowstorm. These dreams are some of the least subtle uses of foreshadowing you will ever see, especially when the giant, malfunctioning freezer in the basement is introduced a short time later. Essentially a boring murder mystery, White Bird in a Blizzard would be a total loss if it wasn’t for the big reveal – someone is having an affair, but you might not guess who. The movie follows Kat to college in the early 1990s and back home again where she hangs

out with besties Beth (Gabourey Sidibe) and Mickey (Mark Indelicato of Ugly Betty fame), whom Beth describes as “a fat chick in a skinny gay body,” and continues sleeping with Detective Scieziesciez. What at first appears to be another Araki movie about adults taking advantage of teens (as with Mysterious Skin) turns out to be something else entirely.

No one is at their best here; not Woodley, not Meloni, not Sidibe, and not even Araki. We’ve come to expect more from the director, as well as some of his cast members, which is especially disappointing because this White Bird never takes wing. Blu-ray special features include deleted and extended scenes, commentary and interviews with Araki and Woodley, and more.

one, 2009’s Twilight: New Moon, that is the worst, which is disappointing considering that it was directed by Chris Weitz (About A Boy). An increasingly femmy Bella, at 18, is so busy obsessing over age and aging, that she completely misses the opportunity to play Jacob who has metamorphosed into a porny, muscled, tattooed boy-toy. Although the gayest moment of the series occurs in New Moon, after Jacob’s teenwolf secret is exposed and he tells Bella that he was born that way and it isn’t a lifestyle choice. However, a unsubtle Romeo & Juliet star-crossed lovers theme, as well as the mediocre special effects involving the (were)wolf pack, threatens to sink the whole thing. The third installment, Eclipse finds slightly less sullen graduating from high school senior Bella accepting her brooding true love Edward’s marriage proposal in exchange for his promise to “change” (read “kill”) her so that they can be together for eternity. Wait, let’s get this straight. Mormon author Stephenie Meyer thinks it’s all right for white trash teenagers to marry vampires, but LGBT folks should be deprived of the same expression of love and commitment. Maybe she should have called her saga Twit-light. Eclipsing its predecessors, Eclipse has plenty of skin, courtesy of stud (wolf) cub Taylor Lautner (who continues to do most of his acting with his abs) as Jacob, and his pec pack of wolves, although the wolves’ pelts are wearing thin. The scary factor is also ratcheted up, not only with the lingering presence of the ruthless Jane (Dakota Fanning) and her creepy crew, but also the bent-on-revenge Victoria (now played by Bryce Dallas Howard), her boy toy Riley (Xavier Samuel) and his army of merciless newborn vamps. Eclipse also gets points for cranking up the humor. That’s right, you will most likely find yourself laughing out loud on several occasions, and that appears to be the way that screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg intended it. For not taking itself too seriously and doing it in a respectable couple of hours, Eclipse is actually recommended viewing.

would have been a better name for the trilogy. Relocating from her mother’s house in sunny and dry Phoenix, Arizona to live with her father in grey and damp Forks, Washington, in 2008’s Twilight, Bella is going to have to deal with more than just being the new kid at school. Her police chief father Charlie (Billy Burke) isn’t the kind of dad to hover, leaving Bella to her own devices. She seems to have her choice of potential beaus, including classmate Mike (Michael Welch of LGBT film fest fave Boy Meets Girl) and Jacob (Taylor Lautner), who goes to school on the reservation. But Bella is feeling it for Edward (Robert Pattinson), of the notorious Cullen clan. After an awkward meeting in biology class, Bella and Edward discover they have chemistry, leading to a succession of encounters, including the revelation of revelation of Edward’s true identity (let’s just say he’s been 17 for more than a hundred years). Edward and his “family,” including “father” Carlisle (Peter Facinelli), are “vegetarian” vamps (feeding on animals, not humans), but their true selves are hidden from the townsfolk. All of this is set against a backdrop of a series of murders committed by a trio of especially evil vampires, including James (Cam Gigandet, in this case the poor-man’s Ryan Kwanten) and Victoria (Rachelle Lefevre), who are determined to get to Bella once they discover her relationship with Edward and that he has not turned her. Sheesh, as if being a teenager isn’t traumatic enough, imagine having blood-thirsty vamps on your trail. Plus, with all this bloodlust, is it wrong to wonder what happens when Bella menstruates? More than anything, this first flick in the series is notable for fully launching several careers, including Anna Kendrick’s (she plays Bella’s friend Jessica). It also feels the most like a teen flick (see the “prom drama”), and the credit for that goes to director Catherine Hardwicke, who already had a couple of other teen-oriented films (Thirteen and The Lords of Dogtown) under belt before helming this one. Of the three films, it’s the second

TRAVEL

LOCATION SHOOT

F

lorida has a rich history as a center of the film industry. During the silent picture era there were a number of studios headquartered in Florida, in fact Jacksonville was known as the “Tinseltown of the East.” It was home to Lubin Studios and Metro Studios, which later merged to become the first M in MGM. In our last column we looked at movie locations in and around the Wilton Manors/Fort Lauderdale area. In this column we expand the scope to include those sites within a few hours’ drive, close enough to make it a day trip. One need look no farther than Miami, which has served as a back-drop for hundreds of TV shows and movies. In fact Miami’s Villa Vizcaya (3251 South Miami Ave.) has appeared in more films than most members of the Academy of Motion Pictures. In Iron Man 3, it was the home of super-villain Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce). It has also appeared in Ace Ventura – Pet Detective, Absence of Malice, Airport ’77 and Any Given Sunday, among many others. The Fontainebleau (4441 Collins Ave., Miami Beach), now a Hilton Resort, has also served as the location for a number of films. In The Bodyguard, Whitney Houston’s character performs at an AIDS charity benefit at the venue. It’s also where Sean Connery’s James Bond creates problems for a crooked poolside card game in Goldfinger. Later Jerry Lewis created a different kind of havoc throughout the hotel in The Bellboy. Going farther back, older readers who remember the TV series Flipper, which ran from 1964-67, no doubt fantasized about Brian Kelly, Luke Halpin and Tommy Nordin (Porter Ricks and his sons Sandy and Bud) who spent most of their scenes in tight bathing suits. The series was filmed in the old Ivan Tors studios, now owned by the British based Greenwich Studios (12100 Ivan Tors Blvd., Miami). In Bad Boys, Will Smith’s character lived in a stylish apartment building (2030 Park Ave., Miami Beach). The film’s police station is actually the Dade County Courthouse (73 W. Flagler, Miami). Téa Leoni’s character Julie Mott, dives into the pool at the Biltmore Hotel (1200 Anastasia Ave., Coral Gables) after witnessing a double murder. The title character of Dexter (Michael C. Hall) lives in the “Palm Terrace” apartment complex, which in reality is Bay Harbor Club (1155 103rd St., Miami). In the first season, a dead body is discovered in the pool of the Seven Seas Motel (5940 Biscayne Blvd.). The popularity of the place actually increased after that episode aired and it was used in as a site for a number of productions. South Beach’s art deco hotels have been the backdrop for many films and television shows. The best known of which is the Carlyle Hotel (1250 Ocean Dr., Miami Beach), which served as the titular nightclub in the Robin Williams/Nathan Lane hit, The Birdcage. There’s Something About Mary is mostly set in Rhode Island, but the film’s most famous scene where Cameron Diaz’ character uses Ben Stiller’s semen as hair gel was filmed at the Cardozo Hotel (1300 Ocean Dr., Miami Beach). The hotel was also featured in Frank Capra’s 1959

A Hole In The Head. In the same film, Matt Dillon’s and Jeffrey Tambor’s characters meet at Big Pink Restaurant (157 Collins Ave., Miami Beach). In Analyze This, Robert Deniro’s character’s wedding (his fiancé was played by Lisa Kudrow) is set at the St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort (9701 Collins Ave., Bal Harbour). In Ace Ventura, Jim Carrey’s title character lives in decidedly less regal digs, The Campton Apartments (1455 Washington Ave.). Other neighborhood spots make appearance include the Cameo Theatre (1445 near Espanola West, Miami Beach) now home to rock concerts. Heading out to the Keys, there are a number of film sites. Of course, the majority of Key Largo was filmed on the Warner Brothers lot, only the opening and a few exterior “atmosphere shots were filmed there. However, you will find The African Queen there (and we don’t mean Kitty Meow!) In the Humphrey Bogart/ Katherine Hepburn classic the boat blows up at the end. However it was all film magic. It’s been berthed outside the Holiday Inn Key Largo (99701 Over-

seas Hwy.) for more than 30 years. Before visiting, call to check, as it is sometimes sent to participate in boat parades. Before you get to Key West, you’ll have to cross the Seven Mile Bridge, the site of the big chase scene finale of Schwarzenegger’s True Lies. In License to Kill, Timothy Dalton’s Bond and CIA buddy and groom to be Felix Leiter (David Hedison) parachute to the Leiter’s wedding at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church (1010 Windsor Lane, Key West). It wouldn’t be a Bond movie without a chase scene and this one begins at Key West International Airport. When M revokes Bond’s “license to kill,” he does so at the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum (907 Whitehead St.). Later scenes, supposedly set in the Barrelhead Bar in The Bahamas, were actually filmed at what is now Thai Island Restaurant (711 Eisenhower Dr.). In our next, and regrettably my final column, we wrap up our series about Florida’s film locations, looking at places a bit farther down the road with trips that will require at least a long weekend to cover.

LOSE THE BLOAT!

F

lush away that pesky water weight now! You’re positive that you are doing everything right. You’ve eliminated fats and cut back on your carbs, especially later in the day. You’re a slave to the weights and pound out cardio relentlessly day after day, and still you are not happy with the results. You have put on mass, but you just can’t seem to attain those championship cuts that really make a superior physique. So what the hell is going on? Maybe your body has a fluid imbalance and you are retaining water. Well, you no longer have to go around looking or feeling like an exhibit at Sea World. Here are some tips that will help you lose some of that bloat and keep you lean and svelte for the beach weather ahead. Too much salt makes your body retain fluids. Put a hold on the salt as well as high sodium foods like ketchup, soy sauce, processed meats and cheeses and many canned and frozen foods. Fast foods are notorious for their high salt and fat content. Avoid pizza, burgers, Mexican and Chinese takeout. Instead, prepare meals at home where you have control. Read labels and measure out portions. Stock up on foods that promote digestion and fluid shedding such as yogurt, cranberry juice and high fiber foods like cereal and brown rice. Avoid high sugar foods like cakes, pies, cookies and especially soda. Too much sugar can raise insulin levels, decreasing the body’s ability to excrete sodium and shed excess fat. You need to maintain a negative calorie balance if you’re dieting to lose weight. But if you starve yourself you can create water retention and end up more bloated than ever. Stick to a high protein, high fiber program. This will help preserve lean muscle and make you feel more satiated when you eat. Your body also has to expend more calories to process protein Never eat less

than 1200-1500 calories per day when you diet or you’ll end up feeling sluggish and your body will store fat more easily. A sedentary lifestyle is a sure way to pack on the pounds and retain tons of water. Your lymphatic system can’t drain excess fluid from your system without movement. You can’t burn fat and build muscle sitting all day before a computer and all evening in front of the TV. Get up off your behind and get to the gym, the track or the pool – your healthy lifestyle depends upon it. Sometimes even when you’re tired, all you need is to get to the gym and you’ll feel rejuvenated right away! It’s ironic, but drinking can cause water retention. Booze acts as a diuretic at first, making you lose excess water. But that loss can lead to dehydration causing the body to scramble to retain needed water. When you go out, drink plenty of water, especially if you are going to imbibe. A well-hydrated body is less likely to retain water and you’ll not be as achy and hung over the next morning. Eat five to six small meals instead of one or two monster meals per day. You’ll have a more steady supply of energy all day long, you’ll store less fat, burn more calories and you’ll retain less fluid in your tissues. Combine these simple pointers with a high protein diet, keep hitting the gym, get plenty of rest and your body will be a hit this summer and always.

Universal Orlando’s Mardi Gras festivities brings out some of the biggest names in music. Tonight’s performer is gay icon and expert roller skater Olivia Newton-John. Known for being part of the mega-successful movie Grease, Newton-John has an incandescent voice only matched by her ethereal beauty. Her signature song, “I Honestly Love You,” is a breathy and catchy melody, and a possible tear-jerker with Valentine’s Day so close. 8:00 p.m. Universal Orlando. 6000 Universal Blvd. Orlando. 32819.
