FORT LAUDERDALE — Incumbent Fort Lauderdale and LGBT Commissioner Dean Trantalis took a decisive lead over his opponent David Tabb Tuesday night in his bid for reelection. With 21 out of 23 precincts reporting, Trantalis received more than 81 percent of the vote compared to just over 18 percent for Tabb. Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler was on hand to congratulate Trantalis. Quality of life issues dominated this election from beach restoration, homelessness and urban development to a new aquatic center and proposed marina for the global mega-yacht community. As the only LGBT member of the commission, Trantalis is often the lone vote against the conservative tide, standing up for his constituents and making intelligent arguments on behalf of his position on the issues. Municipal elections were held in 10 South Florida cities — eight cities in Broward County and two in Palm Beach County.

ou probably know that on July 15, 2014, former major league baseball player Billy Bean was named as the first MLB Ambassador for Inclusion, a position meant to develop educational training initiatives against sexism, homophobia and prejudice. Out and proud, Bean will be also present at annual industry events, including the Winter Meetings and the MLB-MLBPA Rookie Career Development Program. While all that sounds straightforward and doable to those of us in the popular press, translating his job into action in the clubhouses of major league baseball countrywide is an entirely different story. Witness what happened when Bean took his message to the New York Mets last week at spring training in Port St. Lucie. There, Bean put on a Mets uniform and spoke to players about acceptance in baseball. “I disagree with the lifestyle,” devout Christian and Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy told the Daily News after Bean’s visit. “But that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t love a teammate who is gay. I was glad [Bean] was here today and to hear his story.” No willing to leave it at that, Murphy expanded on those comments to NJ.com. “I do disagree with the fact that Billy is a homosexual. That doesn’t mean I can’t still invest in him and get to know him. I don’t think the fact that someone is a homosexual should completely shut the door on investing in them in a relational aspect. “Getting to know him. That, I would say, you can still accept them but I do disagree with the lifestyle, 100%.” Opps. The word “lifestyle” was sure to generate controversy, suggesting that being gay is a choice not a genetically given orientation. “That’s why we’re having a conversation right now,” Murphy countered. “And I completely understand why some-

one who believes it is not a choice, that you’re born with it, would take issue with my beliefs, that it is a lifestyle. “I feel like acceptance, embracing — that falls short. You understand what I’m saying? I love this person. The same way I love my wife, even though I don’t always agree with everything she does, I love her. I can love a teammate, even though I disagree with the choices he makes.” Again the word “choice.” Hmm. Bean didn’t seem fazed. “After reading his comments, I appreciate that Daniel spoke his truth. I really do,” Bean later commented. “I was visiting his team, and a reporter asked his opinion about me. He was brave to share his feelings, and it made me want to work harder and be a better example that someday might allow him to view things from my perspective, if only for just a moment. I respect him, and I want everyone to know that he was respectful of me. We have baseball in common, and for now, that might be the only thing. But it’s a start.” Every day, Bean travels throughout the country, meeting with different teams as they move through spring training and is judged by players who are anything but forthcoming about

their sexual orientation. “It’s not easy,” Bean admits, “to be the only out person in a room of strangers for 35 straight days. It gives me great determination. But I am doing it for the people who don’t have the platform that I do, and I keep reminding myself of that. “It’s exhausting, in a good way,” he told the Agenda. “I was up at 5:30 this morning, and made a presentation to 300 players. I was in Clearweather with the Philadelphia Phillies, and it’s my sixth stop in seven days. Before I get to bed, I’ve got about 35 emails I have to thoughtfully respond to. And try to remember which hotel I’m going to be going to tomorrow. “There’s a logistical element to the job which is amazingly complex; and then there is the emotional side of it where I do for every team what I was unable to do for myself while I was a player,” he said. Bean is not under any illusion that they are all friends, or even supporters. “This is the last frontier for me. To be among peers and to be looked at in a certain way. It’s nerve-racking. This is a new group of people every single time. It’s like the first day of school every day.”

We both are great communicators, and both of us can inspire people when we believe in what we’re doing. “I would never associate my name with something I don’t believe in. I believe in MMPW and the people who have created it, and it is a natural extension of the responsibility I have in baseball. It’s a great, great situation,” Bean said. “We are so pleased to welcome another superstar to the MMP team,” stated Blair. “With Billy Bean’s help, we are looking to add a group of well-known influencers to our Media Advisory Board, to propel the company forward. Mr. Bean’s entre to professional sports represents an historical opportunity for the LGBT community we serve,” added Blair. Lee County Proposes New Domestic Partnership Registry FORT MYERS — The county encompassing Cape Coral and Punta Gorda may soon have its own domestic partnership registry. The Lee County Attorney’s Office is in the process of finalizing a proposed ordinance on the registry, said county spokeswoman Betsy Clayton. The ordinance could go to commissioners in late April or early May. “It’s called equality,” said Arlene Goldberg, a Fort Myers activist in the gay community. “It’s a legal no-brainer for LGBT couples and straight couples

who live in Lee County.” When domestic couples, straight or gay, register they are afforded legal protections that provide more say into their partner’s lives. The rights range from hospital visitation and decisions about health care to funeral and burial arrangements. Crisis decisions, guardianship rights, participation in educational decisions and correctional visitation rights are among the relationship privileges domestic partners across America have been fighting for. Cape Coral has had a registry since November. Punta Gorda started its registry in April. The cost to register in Cape Coral is $50; in Punta Gorda it’s $30. Couples receive a certificate and two wallet-sized proof of partnership cards. Forty-nine couples have registered in Cape Coral, according to the city’s clerk office. Twenty-two couples are same sex and the rest are straight. In Punta Gorda, 35 couples have registered, the city clerk’s office said. About one third were same-sex couples. Domestic partners must meet requirements to qualify. They can’t be married. The relationship must be personal and emotional, and they must share a mutual residence, according to registry guidelines supplied by Equality Florida, the state’s largest LGBT rights organization. “The domestic partner registries are so important to both straight and LGBT couples,” Goldberg said. “When there is love between domestic partners in Florida the registries are critical to allowing these couples make important decisions that affect each other’s lives.” Ryan O’Halloran, a Fort Myers family attorney, said frequent legal issues between domestic partners are custody disputes. “When a couple is not married there are more legal hurdles when children are part of the relationship.” he said. “Often fathers may have little or no rights to custody.” He also said the ordinances vary from community to community. “A couple that is part of a Domestic Registry in Cape Coral may not receive the same legal protections if the couple moves to another city or county in Florida,” he said. “It depends on local laws or ordinances whether a domestic partner-

House Bill Would Remove Gay Adoption Ban from Law

21

TALLAHASSEE (AP) — The Republican dominated Florida House voted to remove language from law that bans gay adoption. The vote Tuesday would bring adoption laws in line with current practice that allows gay people to adopt children. A ban had been in place until 2010, when an appeals court ruled it was unconstitutional. Then Gov. Charlie Crist chose not to appeal the decision. Still, Democratic House members said it was an important acknowledgement by their Republican colleagues that the language shouldn’t be in law. House members approved an amendment to a larger bill that gets rid of the gay adoption ban. The full bill creates adoption incentives and is still waiting for a House vote. Some conservative Republicans who oppose gay adoption voted against the amendment.

March 11, 2015

LEESBURG, FL — Fourteen-yearold Hannah Faughnan has taken her middle school to court for denying her the right to re-establish a gay-straight alliance on campus. The Florida teen claims the alliance would serve as a sanctuary for bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender teens and their friends. Faughnan testified in federal court recently wearing a rainbow-colored bow tie. Carver Middle School reportedly rejected the proposal on several occasions. “Bullying is a very, very difficult problem, and it’s a problem for everyone. It’s kind of like snowflakes — no one case is like the other, and the GSA finds ways to solve these issues,” Faughnan said in court. The school has resisted the idea of an alliance since 2013. At that time, student Bayli Silberstein had established an alliance only after filing a lawsuit against the school with the support of the American Civil Liberties Union. The school later banned the club, claiming it went against school policy. The ACLU is also assisting Faughnan. “I want to make sure students after me will be able to form the club also and not have to go through this again,” Faughnan said. The ACLU states that the school’s decision to ban the group “violates student’s rights.” “Students deserve schools that support them in ending bullying rather

than exacerbating the problem,” said Daniel Tilley, an ACLU attorney and lead counsel in the case. “It’s time for the students at Carver to have the closure they deserve and have their right to establish this club to make their school a safer place respected.” The school stands by its 2003 decision, saying that its policy does not target the alliance in particular but instead limits clubs that are not athletic or an extension of school curriculum. “Our policy was passed in order to comply with federal and state law, and it complied with those laws. There was no constitutional violation against anybody,” states Steve Johnson, an attorney for the Lake County School Board. The ACLU will argue can show that Carver Middle School, because it offers courses for high school credit, is subject to the U.S. Equal Access Act. The act requires federally-funded secondary schools to treat all extracurricular clubs the same. U.S. District Judge William Terrell Hodges is expected to make a decision on the case sometime in early April.

Groups Ask Judge to Order Gay-Marriage Licenses in Alabama

The motion filed to U.S. District Judge Callie Granade in Mobile includes Americans United for Separation of Church and State, the American Civil Liberties Union of Alabama, the National Center for Lesbian Rights and the Southern Poverty Law Center. The motion asks Granade to order Alabama judges to issue marriage licenses regardless of a couple’s sexual orientation, and to give equal protection to marriages of same-sex couples. It also asks for three couples to be added as plaintiffs to a suit that was filed in November challenging the state’s ban. The motion says the couples sought marriage licenses in Baldwin, Mobile, Houston and Marshall counties, but were turned down. “Alabama couples deserve the security and protection that marriage provides,” National Center for Lesbian Rights Legal Director Shannon Minter said in a statement. “We hope that the court will act quickly to provide certainty to couples throughout the

state and establish once and for all that Alabama’s same-sex couples have the freedom to marry.” Granade is the same judge who ruled in January that Alabama’s ban on samesex marriage is unconstitutional. Fortyeight of the state’s 67 counties began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples after the ruling. But the Alabama Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered probate judges to stop issuing licenses, saying the state retains authority over Alabama law, not a federal trial judge. The state Supreme Court’s response to Granade’s ruling drew sharp criticism from gay rights advocates. Alabama is the only state to resist a federal trial or appeals judge where bans against same-sex marriage have been ruled unconstitutional. Alabama’s Supreme Court justices have said that state courts may interpret the U.S. Constitution independently or contrary to federal courts. The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to settle the issue later this year.

Illinois Joins High Court Case Favoring Same-Sex Marriage CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois has joined a group of states filing arguments with the U.S. Supreme Court that the Constitution requires approval of samesex marriage nationwide. The brief was filed in connection with challenges of state laws in Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee that ban same-sex couples from marrying and refuse to recognize such marriages sanctioned by other states. The high court will hear oral arguments about those cases April 28. Attorney General Lisa Madigan said Friday that the right of samesex marriage is to ensure everyone has equal protection of the laws and to affirm that “all individuals are equal.” The friend-of-the-court brief the states filed says refusal to recognize same-sex marriage harms the couples who seek it and affects their decisions about education, employment, residency and more.

organizations from the requirement, and afflicted organizations such as hospitals, churches and schools. For example, Brigham Young University, a private school owned by the Mormon church, would be exempt. It allows employers to adopt “reasonable dress and grooming standards” and “reasonable rules and polices” for gender-specific restrooms and other facilities, as long as they also accommodate transgender people. The bill doesn’t spell out specifics about how to do that, nor does it address thornier discrimination questions about whether a business has to serve someone for religious reasons, such as a wedding photographer who objects to photographing a same-sex marriage. For religious rights, it protects the right of an individual employee to express their religious or moral beliefs in “a reasonable, non-disruptive or nonharassing way,” as long as it doesn’t interfere with the company’s business. For example, Planned Parenthood could ban employees from wearing a “Right to Life” button, according to University of Illinois law professor Robin Fretwell Wilson, who helped write the bill. The proposal also includes a specific exemption for the Boy Scouts of America, which has a ban on gay adult Scout leaders. The organization did not participate in negotiations. The organization was included because of a 2000 U.S. Supreme Court decision recognizing its constitutional right to exclude gay members. The organization now allows openly gay youths.

LGBT Anti-Discrimination Bill Passes Utah Senate

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — A legislator is proposing expanding Arkansas’ anti-discrimination protections to include sexual orientation and gender identity after a new law said local ordinances couldn’t go beyond what’s spelled out in state law. Democratic Rep. Greg Leding of Fayetteville on Monday proposed adding the protections to state law addressing discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations. The state law currently includes race, religion, national origin, gender and disability. The move comes after legislation became law barring cities and counties from enacting ordinances that prohibit discrimination on a basis not contained in state law. The measure was in response to a now-repealed Fayetteville ordinance that included protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

wner R.W. Wilson bought Coral Reef Guesthouse in 2010 and has done wonders to transform the property from — what he said “looked like the Golden Girls throw up in there” — into what is now a gorgeous Key West motif. Through the powder blue wooden estate doors and beyond the guesthouse office, you stroll across an enclosed sanctuary. And as you step foot onto a brick pathway, your eyes can clearly scan the guest rooms that open onto the main focal point of the villa paradise, the courtyard. The courtyard is lined with sparkling white lounge chairs. Some are positioned perfectly under shady foliage of flawlessly manicured palm trees, while others are arranged strategically throughout the courtyard for maximum sun exposure. Luxuriate by the pool in the buff or in your best swimwear, it’s your choice. Take a dip in the heated pool or soak in a 12-person jacuzzi. When you’re done, wash off in one of the two outdoor showers. Corel Reef Guesthouse is your home away from home. There are only eight guest rooms on the property. Wilson is constantly around because he lives across the street, where he has just opened up a ninth room to catch any overflow. “I look at the Coral Reef as an extension of my home,” he said.

Each newly renovated room comes with a mini frig, free Wi-Fi and premium cable television. Each room offers a different décor and some are remodeled with sleek, rain-shower head bathrooms. Most of the rooms are connected by a door to accommodate groups who may want to share living spaces. A suite and the owner’s suite are equipped with a full kitchen and open up onto their own private patios. The owner’s suite has a separate living room. Coral Reef Guesthouse is clothing optional and straight-friendly. This year, reservations can be made through Booking.com, Hotels.com, and Expedia. However, Wilson recommends that guests book directly from the Coral Reef Guesthouse website (www.coralreef.metromediaworks.net) for the best prices. Right now, take advantage of his seasonal promotion, $99-a-night, Monday — Thursday (select rooms only) that can be extended through the weekend.

A Fitness & Nutrition Transformation Blueprint

FITNESS MAN

WHAT’S AGE GOT TO DO WITH IT?

W

ay up there on the list of excuses we give ourselves as to why we can’t lose weight, become fit and live healthier lives is the one about age. EXCUSE: “I am too old to lose weight and have a fit body…” TRUTH: Nonsense! You can be fit at any age. Regular exercise strengthens the body and contributes to a longer, healthier life. Unless you are on your death bed, it’s never too late to benefit from exercise! Allow me to prove my point by introducing two of the most inspiring people I know. Richard and Alyce Sandor walked into my gym about five years ago to begin a personal training program. Neither had engaged in any real exercise in years and their fitness levels reflected that. Neither could perform a bodyweight squat or push-up confidently. But the Sandors were dedicated and persistent — and they still are. They show up on time for three training sessions every week and always do what they are asked to do by their trainer with no whining or complaining — no matter how challenging the exercise. Today, Richard, at 83 years old, performs squats while standing on a Bosu Ball balancing a loaded barbell on his shoulders. He is as strong as an ox (seriously!) and performs at a fitness level much higher than many clients who are in their 30s and 40s. Then there is Alyce, whom Richard still refers to as his “beautiful bride.” She is slim, trim and rocks possibly the hottest body ever to exist on any 70-something year-old. You won’t find any old lady, hanging flab under her upper arms! No, siree! Resistance training has given Alyce what we fondly call “Michele Obama arms” — firm, lean biceps and triceps with beautiful muscle tone. This inspired and inspiring couple will tell you how exercise has changed their lives and given them the energy and good health to enjoy to the fullest the quality, active South Florida lifestyle we all want but few of us will actually achieve at their age due to healthrelated issues.

So HOW do you get started? Here are 7 tips to get from fat to fit: 1. Drink a Gallon of Water Water is always a crucial element for proper bodily functions, and even more so when fat loss is your goal. The conversion of fat into energy takes place in your liver, and this process requires that you be well hydrated. Drinking a gallon of water over the course of your day is a wonderful goal to aim for. This goal is easily met when you get into the habit of sipping water throughout the day, coupled with drinking a full glass before meals, upon waking and before bed.

Richard and Alyce Sandor prove you can be fit and 2. Cut out Alcohol trim at any age. This fat loss tip is always met with groans, but despite its surfing, jogging, brisk walking on the unpopularity it remains one of beach or in your neighborhood – any the most effective. The first reason activity that requires you to move that alcohol should be cut out in your body for a decent duration of order to lose fat is that it’s filled with time and break a nice sweat in the empty calories. Hiking, biking, swimming,

5. Lift Weights You might consider this to be pretty obvious, but many people are still resistant to the idea that resistance training leads to fat loss. The act of lifting weights causes those targeted muscles to stimulate new muscle tissue growth. Now this doesn’t mean that your muscles are going to get noticeably larger, but it does mean that your muscle tissue will become tighter and more toned. The increase in muscle translates to a higher metabolism, which means that your body will naturally burn fat faster and more efficiently. 6. Use HIIT High Intensity Interval Training is a method that has been quite popular in the past decade – and for good reason. This advanced form of aerobics, when done correctly, is one of the most effective methods for burning fat. HIIT is achieved by performing short, intense burst of aerobic intervals between less intense bouts of aerobics. For example, 2 minutes of walking followed by a 30 second sprint, done for 20 minutes. 7. Work with a Fitness Professional When your car needs new brakes, you take it the mechanic. When you wake up with a fever and sore throat, you go to the doctor. When your hair gets too long, you go to get it cut. When you need to reduce body fat, you...try to do it all on your own? That makes no sense. The investment is a fitness or aerobics class or some kind or even private personal training is well worth it to get in shape safely and quickly. Many free or inexpensive options exist, so get moving! Peter Jackson is a fitness and nutrition professional and the owner of Fort Lauderdale fitness businesses including Push Fitness, a private training gym. With his background in advertising and marketing, Skandros same up with the brand name. Now, Silverberg handles the technical side of the business, and built the original app in only a month. The “Match” feature was something Silverberg added fairly recently after responding to member feedback. Another feature that has been a hit with the community is what Skandros calls “Benevolads’ – free, in-app advertising provided to non-profits whose missions are focused on aiding and supporting their respective LGBT communities. So far, 800 different organizations are taking advantage of the service. “We’ve given away $1 million worth of inventory,” Skandros said. In the next several months, Skandros said SCRUFF plans to roll out a new travel-related feature that fits into its growth objectives globally. So what about Florida, which is a huge draw for LGBT visitors from around the world? “We’re looking at hosting a SCRUFF party in Miami and possibly sponsoring Gay Days in Orlando,” he said. The Miracle Worker The classic story immortalized onstage and screen by Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke tells the story of Annie Sullivan and her student, blind and mute Helen Keller. A pair of aspiring playwrights have decided to write one of the strangest musicals of all time: a splashy, mostly made-up historical fiction production about the life of Johannes Gutenberg—the inventor of the printing press. This hysterical spoof began as a part of the Upright Citizens Brigade in New York City before running off-Broadway in 2007. 8:00 p.m. American Stage Theatre Company at Raymond James Theater. 163 Third St. N. JK Rowling’s imaginative adventure into magic, friendship, and true evil took seven long books (and eight movies) to fully tell. BBC Television hosts Daniel Clarkshon and Jefferson Turner are taking it upon themselves to conquer the task of telling the entire tale in seventy madcap minutes. The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel: Maggie Smith as “Muriel Donnelly”

March 11, 2015

here was much to love and admire about the 2011 film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Although it was a familiar formula — a group of people who might not otherwise become friends do so with wonderful results — the film struck the right chord with audiences of all ages and became an unlikely box office hit. You know what that means, don’t you? The inevitable sequel. Director John Madden returns to helm the sequel. As in the previous version, Maggie Smith steals every scene in which she appears. From the first, where her character Muriel joins entrepreneur Sonny (the increasingly hot Dev Patel) at a meeting with a New York hotel franchise headed by Ty (David Strathairn) to discuss a potential business partnership, to the last, where she may be saying farewell in her own way. In between, there’s the wedding of Sonny and Sunaina (Tina Desai) to plan, the arrival of new hotel guests Guy (Richard Gere) and Lavinia (Tamsin Greig) – one of

Richard Gere as “Guy”

whom might be employed by the New York hotel company, a business proposition for Evelyn (Judi Dench), a decision about suitors for Madge (Celia Imrie) and a divorce to finalize for Douglas (Bill Nighy). There’s also plenty of tomfoolery involving mistaken identities, miscommunications, jealousy and other intrigues. Being a sequel, without having the novel by Deborah Moggach for its basis, Ol Parker’s screenplay relies more heavily on humor than heart. The jokes, mostly coming from Sonny, are shticky, as if the hotel was in the Catskills instead of Jaipur. It’s not all schlock – Sonny’s line about questioning his own sexuality after meeting Guy is handled well. But, unlike with the first film, watching TSBEMH, felt like set-up for yet another sequel on the docket. Even worse, the film lagged on more than one occasion, becoming, dare it be said, boring. For these reasons, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel will always be second best.

S

Judi Dench returns as “Evelyn Greenslade”

o far, one Disney cartoon character has survived the transition from animation to liveaction and that’s Cruella De Vil from 101 Dalmations. Of course, that probably has more to do with the actress portraying the character, in this case the very versatile Glenn Close. After the dismal live-action Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie in the only role she was truly born to play, it was probably inevitable that Disney would continue to crank out these kinds of movies. The proof is here in Cinderella (Disney), opening in theaters in March. As with Maleficent, the (future) princess is far less interesting than the evil villainess. In the case of Cinderella, Cate Blanchett fully embodies the despicable Lady Tremaine, the widowed mother of two who marries the widowed father (Ben Chaplin) of Ella (Lily James). Following the death of Ella’s father, Tremaine’s abuse of Ella begins. She and her dreadful daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drizella (Sophie McShera) treat Ella less like family and more like an indentured servant. The one high point in Ella’s life is forest encounter with hot

Kit, aka Prince Charming (Richard Madden), although she is unaware of his identity and status. What follows is the announcement of a ball to find the Prince a suitable bride, Cinderella’s transformation at the hands (or should that be wand?) of her Fairy Godmother (Helena Bonham Carter, providing comic relief while wearing Meryl Streep’s Hollywood teeth from Into The Woods), the lengthy dance sequence, the stroke of midnight and so on. Everyone already knows the story, a tale as old as time. Sadly, neither Chris Weitz’s screenplay, Kenneth Branagh’s lackluster direction, the unimaginative special effects, or the questionable costuming and hair situations (gay men would be wise to pay attention to Tremaine’s styling) does anything to make it better than the original 1950 Disney cartoon version or the 1965 TV musical version, for that matter. Even the Frozen Fever short, featuring the voices of Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell, in which a head cold results in snotty snowmen (no kidding), which precedes the movie, isn’t up to par.

TRAVEL

YOUR STAYCATION JUST GOT THAT MUCH MORE AFFORDABLE!

S

taycations became popular during our most recent financial crisis, the recession of 2006. People all over the U.S. were cutting unnecessary expenses just so they can pay for the essentials: Food, water, electricity, etc. It was a severe time of distress in which individuals and families could just no longer afford the simple luxuries of life let alone head out for weeklong trips to desired travel destinations. So we had to think smart and find alternatives to entertain our family and escape from the woes of life’s hustle and bustle. One of those alternatives was to enjoy the splendors and wonders of our own hometown, which allowed us to return from a short distance back home to forgo expensive lodging. The staycation recipe worked and gave us the relief we needed. But as Floridians, we can push the savings further to make our staycations even more affordable. Florida is known for its many local attractions and world-renown theme parks. Some of these locations offer countless savings exclusive only to Florida residents. Some times these discount are blatant and very common and other times they are hidden and somewhat hard to find. But they’re there and available to us so why not take advantage of them. Orlando and Tampa have some of the best theme parks in the world and fortunately for us, they’re located in our immediate universe. These two travel destinations provide us with some of the most thrilling and enjoyable staycations in the world. Universal Orlando Resort (6000 Universal Boulevard Orlando, FL 32819 Phone: 407-363-8000) is home to two theme parks and a waterpark: Universal Studios Florida (The Wizarding World of Harry Porter — Diagon Alley), Universal’s Islands of Adventure (The Wizarding World of Harry Porter — Hogsmeade), and Wet ‘n Wild. Each park has single day passes that stay fixed at the same price for Florida residents and non-Florida residents. However, if you decide to

There’s also deep savings for you theme park fanatics who enjoy experiencing the thrills and adventures yearround. Take advantage of the choice between one of their three annual pass options that start at a 12% savings from the original pricing. The resort also offers Florida residents Flexpay options on the annual passes, which helps by allowing us to pay the full cost in low monthly installments. With the easing of the recession and the gradual rise of economic prosperity, the definition and purpose has evolved. And what was once used primarily as an affordable alternative is now a reference to a short-term vacation in your own hometown or the surrounding areas complete with room accommodations for overnight stays. Lucky for us, the discounts keep rolling in so we can expand on our staycations. Want to ooh and aah at Cirque du Soleil La Nouba (Downtown DisneyLake Buena Vista, FL 32830 Phone: 407-939-7328) — the discounted $49 ticket price ends March 28. Or how about saving 35-40% at Star Island Resort and Club (5000 Avenue of the Stars Kissimmee, FL 34746 Phone: 407-997-8000) — available through December 31. You can find these two deals and more Florida resident specials at Experience Kissimmee (experiencekissimmee.com). Can you imagine a relaxing spa day in Key Largo? Would you like to play some golf and relax at the Orange Lake Resort (8505 W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Hwy. Kissimmee, FL 34747 Phone: 866-892-5890)? Then, check out VisitFlorida.com for these two deals and countless others. Whatever your reason for a staycation, make sure to take advantage of your Florida status and reap the savings. We all need to get away at one time or another whether it’s for a day or a long weekend. The relaxation or excitement and fun helps to relieve tension so we can go through our everyday lives with a smile on our faces.
