ob Jones III apologized this week for a comment he made in 1980 while being interviewed at the White House. The one-time president of the uber-conservative Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, said at the time that homosexuals should be stoned to death. Despite taking 35 years to right his obvious wrong, Jones, in his apology, shows he hasn’t grown much as either a Christian or a person. At the time, Jones was at the White House to lobby thenPresident Jimmy Carter against extending Civil Rights Act protections to gays. In an interview with Associated Press he said, “I’m sure this will be Bob Jones III greatly misquoted but it would not be a bad idea to bring the swift justice today that was brought in controversy 35 years ago. You’ve again missed the point. By labeling your words as “long forgotten,” you’ve ignored the fact that thousands still remember your thoughts very well, and have been actively campaigning for you to take ownership of them. Now you that you have, it is a shame that you could not have done it in a more sincere way, taking responsibility for your heinous thoughts instead of couching the comments around your equally-as-vile a belief that homosexuality is a sin. Gay and lesbians are not sinners Bob because of their sexual orientation. They are merely another variation on the myriad of humans on earth. By failing to recognize that, and by failing to welcome them into your church and your school, you continue to marginalize a fascinating cross spectrum of individuals. Thousands of young people have attended the Bob Jones family of schools under the leadership of a man who once wished them dead. Now that he finally has decided that they have a right to live, he brands them sinners in need of salvation. As the LGBT community struggles with gaining equality in South Carolina, it’s time to invite them with open arms into your home and your life, Bob. Doing anything less perpetrates discrimination and pain. It’s the Christian way.

POPE ACCEPTS RESIGNATION OF DISGRACED CARDINAL

BY RICHARD HACK
GETS TO KEEP TITLE AND PENSION
V
Archbishop Leo Cushley of St Andrews and Edinburgh said: “As most people are aware, Pope Francis is a good and prayerful man whose character embodies justice and mercy. I am confident therefore that the decision of the Holy Father is fair, equitable and proportionate. “Cardinal O’Brien’s behaviour distressed many, demoralised faithful Catholics and made the Church less credible to those who are not Catholic. I therefore acknowledge and welcome his apology to those affected by his behaviour and also to the people of Scotland, especially the Catholic community. “For my own part, I would like to express sorrow and regret to those most distressed by the actions of my predecessor. “I hope now that all of us affected by this sad and regrettable episode will embrace a spirit of forgiveness, the only spirit that can heal any bitterness and hurt that still remains.” According to reports, the Cardinal will have no participation in any public, religious or civil events. He had been the subject of a Vatican investigation, led by Archbishop Charles Scicluna of Malta, whose conclusions were apparently handed in to Pope Francis earlier this month. Cardinal O’Brien said, “I will continue to play no part in the public life of the Church in Scotland; and will dedicate the rest of my life in retirement, praying especially for the Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh, for Scotland, and for those I have offended in any way.”
Cardinal Keith O’Brien
March 25, 2015 7
ATICAN CITY-- The Vatican announced that Pope Francis has accepted 77-year-old Keith O’Brien’s resignation from “the rights and privileges of a cardinal.” In 2013, O’Brien resigned as archbishop of St. Andrews and Edinburgh in Scotland after admitting “inappropriate sexual behavior” with several priests to then-Pope Benedict XVI, and recused himself from the conclave of cardinals that elected Francis as pontiff two years ago. What makes Cardinal O’Brien’s disgrace so amazing is that as the most senior Catholic leader in Great Britain, Cardinal O’Brien was a staunch critic of both homosexuality and same-sex marriage. He called same-sex relationship “harmful to the physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing” and compared equal marriage to “slavery and child abuse.” Pope Benedict XVI was in full agreement of his head British cardinal, labeling homosexuality as a “defection of human nature.” The far more liberal Pope Francis replaced Benedict, who resigned soon after because of failing health, in 2013. In November 2012, Cardinal O’Brien was named the “Bigot of the Year” by the Stonewall charity due to his labeling of same-sex marriage as “grotesque.” It was alleged that Cardinal O’Brien had a long-standing physical relationship with one of the men whose complaints about his conduct sparked his resignation. Scotland’s Herald newspaper reported that the individual left the Catholic priesthood in the middle of the last decade but rejoined it and is now living on the European continent in a post Cardinal O’Brien helped him secure. The complainant is known to have been in regular telephone contact with Cardinal O’Brien until recently and was a frequent visitor to St Benets, his official residence in Edinburgh.

CAPITOL BEAT BY LINDA PENTZ
SCHOCK JOCK: WHAT IS BEHIND THE HIGH-FLYING ILLINOIS CONGRESSMAN’S SUDDEN RESIGNATION?
W
March 25, 2015
16
ASHINGTON, DC — The sudden resignation of Aaron Schock, the 33-year old Republican Congressman from Illinois, has taken some observers by surprise. Schock is best known for his $40,000 Downton Abbey-style office re-do and his super-fitness, including a famous bare-chested Men’s Health magazine cover shot. Under investigation by the Office of Congressional Ethics, Schock had reportedly spent taxpayer money on luxury hotels, private jets and lavish dining experiences. But he looked set to go the distance in efforts to clear his name after paying back at least some of the expen-

ditures and retaining a legal team to sort out the mess. He was also viewed as a promising high-flier and someone who, as fellow Illinois Republican, Rep. John Shimkus observed, “brought some excitement and youth to the party.” Consequently, Schock’s abrupt departure, effective March 31, reignited persistent gossip that the young Congressman might have quit to conceal his sexual orientation. Unsubstantiated rumors that Schock is gay have swirled on the internet for several years. But given Schock’s lamentable voting record on LGBT equality — earning him a 0%
score on the Human Rights Campaign’s Congressional Scorecard — the notion that he dumped his political career to hide his sexuality seems like a long-shot. Schock voted against LGBT hate-crimes legislation, against the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, against employment nondiscrimination laws protecting gays and lesbians, and for the Defense of Marriage Act. But while Schock never met a selfie he couldn’t take — and post — on his Instagram site, he is also likely the only Congressman with a personal photographer on his payroll, an issue at the heart of the ethics investigation. That would be Jonathon Link, hired last September and who traveled with Schock to India, paid for by the Global Poverty Project. House rules allow a member to accept private money for a companion’s travel expenses only if the companion is a staffer, spouse or child. Link is none of these. Nor did Schock disclose that Link traveled with him. Are Schock and Link a couple? The answer, of course, should not matter, but one wonders whether it is still political suicide for a Republican Congressman or Senator to declare themselves gay? Gregory Angelo, executive director of the Log Cabin Republicans who advocate for LGBT acceptance within the party, would not comment on this question because, as he wrote in an email to the Florida Agenda, he does not agree with the “unsubstantiated claims about Schock that perpetuate gay stereotypes.” But if Schock did decide to throw in the towel to hide his sexual orientation, then this would suggest that not nearly enough progress has yet been made within the Republican party and among its voters to accept elected officials for their political effectiveness rather than condemn them for their sexual preferences.

ers Monday that they’re hoping similar legislation will finally pass this session. “We are not looking for any kind of special treatment,” Erickson told the House Human Services Committee. “We are asking to be treated with dignity and respect just like everybody else.” The Fargo couple, who were married in Canada, were among dozens of proponents and opponents packing The Capitol’s largest room to testify on the measure that would ban discrimination based on sexual orientation in housing, government, public services and the workplace. Opponents of the measure said it was unnecessary, and argued it could force religious organizations to go against their own convictions. North Dakota law now forbids discrimination by race, color, sex, religion, age, national origin and disability. It also bans discrimination based on whether a person is on public assistance, married, or unmarried. Bipartisan legislation introduced this session would add sexual orientation to the list of classes of individuals who are specifically protected against discrimination. Similar legislation failed during the 2009 and 2013 sessions. North Dakota’s Senate approved the measure last month and sent it to the House. The Human Services Committee will decide later whether to endorse the proposal. The panel’s recommendation will be followed by a House vote. BISMARCK (AP) — North Dakota “If this is voted down yet again,” lawmakers have defeated legislation Erickson told lawmakers, “I think that’s twice in the past six years that would going to change my point of view from prohibit discrimination based on sexual our Legislature tolerating discrimination orientation. The country’s deputy ambassador Petr Iliichev alluded to this in urging support for the resolution, saying the directive Ban issued last June can provide the basis “for legal conflict with national legislation” of U.N. member states. Iliichev criticized the secretarygeneral for adopting a plan that he said discriminates against many member states and changes a nearly 70-year-old policy. “We think we should leave the status quo. It is an example of how the United Nations respects cultural differences,” Iliichev said.

WHERE DOES CONGRESSMAN PATRICK MURPHY STAND ON LGBT EQUALITY?
W
ith all due respect, Florida has a political habit of producing high-profile turncoats. In this case, Republicans politicians who become Democrats for one reason or another. Former Gov. Charlie Crist of course is the most glaring and recent example. But after his announcement this week to seek the U.S. Senate seat now held by Marco Rubio, U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-Jupiter) is now my flavor of the month. He currently represents Florida’s Treasure Coast of Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie counties and serves on the financial services committee and select committee on intelligence in the House. According to the Human Rights Campaign, which is arguably the most influential LGBT advocacy organization in the country, the 31-year-old Murphy (who turns 32 on March 30) scores a perfect 100 on the most important national LGBT issues. According to his staff, here are some of the would-be laws Rep. Murphy has co-sponsored in the House: Congressman Patrick Murphy The Respect for Marriage Act would repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and require the federal government to recognize same-sex Immigration and Nationality Act to allow U.S. citimarriages as valid; zens and lawful permanent residents to sponsor their The Employment Non-Discrimination Act would “permanent partners” for residency in the U.S. prohibit discrimination in hiring and employment on As a two-term Democrat since 2011, Murphy’s the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity; claim to fame so far is his successful campaign The Student Non-Discrimination Act would against the truly scary Tea Party Republican Rep. prohibit public schools from discriminating against Allen West, who Murphy defeated back in 2012 any student on the basis of actual or perceived sexual when Murphy was 29. And Murphy was actually a orientation or gender identity; Mitt Romney Republican before switching parties to Social Security Equality Act would eliminate the run against West. policy of the Social Security Administration that That race still ranks as the most expensive House prevents same-sex couples from receiving the same race of David versus Goliath in U.S. history, and benefits as their heterosexual counterparts; made Murphy the youngest member of the 113th Restore Honor to Service Members Act would Congress. Murphy raised $5 million to West’s $21 ensure that gay and lesbian veterans discharged from million. (The only other Democratic candidate to the military because of sexual orientation receive the raise a larger sum was reportedly Sean Eldridge of honor and recognition they deserve; and New York, the husband of Facebook co-founder Uniting American Families Act would amend the Chris Hughes.)
Murphy went on to beat former state Rep. Carl Domino in 2014. “Washington is full of hyper-partisan politicians who can’t or won’t get anything done and Florida deserves better,” Murphy said in statement this week. His chances to gain the Democratic nomination look pretty good now that Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman-Schultz of Weston and Crist have both said they aren’t running. Murphy is a Florida native and mostly grew up in the Keys. He worked as an accountant for Deloitte and Touche and at a Miami construction company owned by his Republican father, Thomas Murphy. He attended the University of Miami and is still single! Eric Johnson, Murphy’s LGBT chief of staff who was raised in Boca Raton and has been a part of Murphy’s political career since the beginning, explained that Florida Democrats like Murphy and Crist switched parties after many GOP moderates who support popular notions like the minimum wage and a women’s right to choose were left behind. But Murphy doesn’t tow the line for Democrats either on issues like the Keystone Pipeline project and Wall Street regulation. When it comes to what matters most Insurgent to the LGBT[Courtesy community politically, “Patrick’s 31. of Summit] He comes from a generation where these issues are a no-brainer,” said Johnson. “When I was in school, I didn’t know one person who was out. Now they have clubs.” Johnson, 44, has been partnered for 16 years and got married in October of 2013 in Washington, D.C., explained that Murphy’s father has always supported individuals over party platforms. In fact, Murphy senior was the biggest single contributor to the failed campaign of former state Treasurer Alex Sink against Gov. Rick Scott. “When I got married, the best phone call I got was from Patrick’s father,” Johnson said. “For years, Senator Rubio has put the needs of Floridians behind his presidential ambitions.” Here, here, Congressman Murphy. led people to believe, and there is hope beyond the walls that keep the citizens under the control of the Erudite. Tris even finds a way to forgive herself for the destruction left in her wake thus far. Insurgent is more violent than its predecessor, including the surprise ending that comes with a bang. The special effects are also better (even without 3D). That said, Insurgent is essentially a place holder for what comes next, meaning parts one and two of Allegiant, due out in 2016 and 2017, respectively.

Gale (Liam Hemsworth) and Finnick (Sam Claflin), as well as Plutarch Heavensbee (the late Philip Seymour Hoffman), a stripped-down but still fabulous and fashion-forward Effie (Elizabeth Banks) and others, Katniss assumes her new role. Meanwhile, unaware that Snow has him under some sort of mind control, Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), Katniss’ true love, makes TV appearances presenting a counterpoint to Katniss’ efforts. Peeta’s rescue from the grip of Snow is another of Katniss’ missions. Like Divergent, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 has plenty of hot guys on parade (Hemsworth and Claflin), as well as a strong female character that makes for a decent role model. Not as good or entertaining as The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, the second movie in the set, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 serves its purpose in laying the ground work for the next installment.

ike Insurgent, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 (Lionsgate) also utilizes the overused, lazy dream device to set the stage for the third movie installment based on the dystopian Y/A novel saga by Suzanne Collins (which preceded Roth’s Divergent series by a few years). Jennifer Lawrence returns to the fold as “girl on fire” Katniss, a survivor of
the deadly Hunger Games and its mounting body count. After firing one of her trademark flaming arrows through a protective force field, Katniss reluctantly becomes the Mockingjay, the emblematic figurehead of the resistance. The rebellion is led by President Coin (Julianne Moore) whose plan is the unification of the Districts against the Capitol run by the insidious President Snow (Donald Sutherland). As in the Divergent series, leaders such as Snow have convinced the citizens of the dystopian society that he has their best interests at heart and can provide them with security. The existence of Mockingjay puts the entire class system in danger of being destroyed, thereby ending Snow’s reign. Katniss becomes more determined than ever after seeing some of the devastation firsthand, including the bombing of a hospital. With the support of fellow survivors

nsurgent (Summit), in 3D no less, is the second installment in the Divergent series based on the Y/A dystopian novels by Veronica Roth. The continuing (mis)adventures of Tris (Shailene Woodley) finds the once Dauntless (one of five factions of a decimated near-future Chicago) teen still being hunted by ruthless Erudite (the supposedly supreme faction) leader Jeanine (Kate Winslet). Jeanine, who sees herself and the other Erudite as being civilization’s last hope, is determined to do whatever it takes to prevent Tris and other Divergents (a sort of superior race of beings encompassing the qualities of the other factions and then some) from succeeding in telling the truth about her. Tris’ sleep is still troubled by nightmares involving the death of her parents and a Dauntless friend. Luckily she has porny Four aka Tobias (Theo James) there to comfort and protect her. Tris hides out in a peaceful Amity community led by Johanna (Octavia Spencer), along with her brother Caleb (Ansel Elgort), pesky Peter (Miles Teller) and Four. But the reprieve is shortlived as Jeanine sends her minions, run by evil Eric (Jai Courtney) and Max (Mekhi Phifer), on a quest to find and retrieve the perfect Divergent who she thinks will help her unlock a box that is believed to hold the secret to destroying Divergents once and for all. Along the way, Tris cuts her hair. After she and Four are betrayed by Peter, abandoned by Caleb, put to the test by Candor head Jack (Daniel Dae Kim) and reunited with Evelyn (Naomi Watts), Four’s itinerant mother becomes the leader of the Factionless underground. Predictably, Tris eventually ends up in Jeanine’s clutches and is subject to a simulation exam that could potentially kill her. Needless to say, good triumphs over evil. The Divergent are more valuable than Jeanine has

Her landmark fifth album Surfacing includes the Grammy Award-winning tracks “Building a Mystery” and “Last Dance.” Her greatest accomplishment in the late 1990s may be the formation of the previously mentioned Lilith Fair—a progressive female-only music festival that included such acts as Liz Phair, Missy Elliott, and Natalie Merchant. his is a really neat place. First – every item is 475 calories or less! Fabulous if you are health conscious. Second – the menu is constantly evolving and changing so you will never get bored going there. Seasons boasts that it is a celebration of “what’s good now.” The ingredients are seasonally inspired and are served at their peak of freshness. They use a rustic cooking technique that brings out the natural flavors of the meals. They also have a changing selection of global wines to satisfy any palette. The setting is a step above casual but you can get away with shorts and flip-flops. You can also dine inside or out. This is a place to go on a date or a friend. It is a great place to eat and carry on a nice conversation over food and wine. The friendly service (Chad was our waiter) makes the dining experience very special. I went recently so the Winter dinner menu was in full swing. The winter menu has a lot of mushroom and signature veggie sides. I started with the Lobster Flatbread ($16), which was one of the special appetizers for that evening but can be found on the regular winter menu. When going to Seasons 52, a flatbread appetizer is almost a must – especially on your first time. They have an ample selection (Blackened Steak and Blue Cheese, Tomato, Chicken, Artichoke/Goat Cheese and Picante – all $10 – $11). They do have traditional type appetizers ($6 – $13) to compliment the flatbread. They include Edamame, a Shrimp Scampi skillet and Ahi Tuna Tartare. Next up, they have salads and entrée salads (keeping with the 475 calorie theme). The appetizer type salads ($7-$9) are eclectic and in theme
with the winter menu. They include Spinach/ Pear, Field Greens and Mushroom/Arugula. The dinner salads are more robust ($13 – $20) and start with the Winter Vegetarian Tasting and end with the Lump Crab Wedge. The entrées are Fish/Seafood or Poultry and Meat. I had the caramelized Grilled Sea Scallops with potatoes and broccolini (a tasty stringy broccoli vegetable) ($24). I added a Maine Lobster Tail accompaniment ($11) to finish off my “seafood” motif. My dining partner had the Wood Roasted Pork Tenderloin ($19) which I also sampled (very tasty!). Just when you thought you were done – arguably the best part of the meal takes place. Chad politely inquires “would you like a coffee drink and some dessert?” Don’t mind if I do, Chad! I had a Peanut Butter Swirl ($3) served in a small cup with an Espresso Chaser ($3). This was an awesome dinner and I plan to be back in the spring, summer and fall!!! This restaurant is located right in front of the Galleria shopping mall so there is plenty of parking. It is convenient to all of Broward if you go on the weekend. They take reservations and have a Happy Hour Monday–Friday from 4-6 at their very spacious bar area. Grab a friend and plan a nice evening out at Seasons 52.

A Fitness & Nutrition Transformation Blueprint
FITNESS MAN
GREEN TEA: Research continues to support the powerful role of green tea extract in weight loss, with one study noting that green tea was preferentially shown to target fat in the belly. The International Sports Sciences Association reports green tea is “perhaps the most potent antioxidant known to man” in its ability to prevent such conditions as lung cancer due to smoking, skin damage and skin cancer due to radiation, antiviral activities and many other maladies. Green tea is also credited with lowering cholesterol levels in the blood. Brew your own at home.
shaking and concocting your protein shakes on a daily basis becomes messy or tedious, consider buying ready-to-drink protein shakes. My favorite brand is Premier Protein, available in vanilla and chocolate. Each 11 oz. package has a whopping 30 grams of protein, 1 gram of sugar, 4 grams of carbs and a total 160 calories. It’s one of the best out there.
MINT TEA: This has become a new favorite of mine. I make a big pot of it, drink a cup hot and chill the rest to drink later over ice with a twist of lemon. Mint tea does wonders for your digestion as it relaxes muscles and helps to move food through the digestive tract. It’s delicious, too.
WATER: Last, but not least, is water – the best, zero calorie thirst-quencher of them all! Water is perfect to replace fluids lost through metabolism (sweating, elimination of waste, etc), and is the best at rehydrating the body. The Institute of Medicine recommends the consumption of 15 cups a day for men and 11 cups for women. The conversion of fat into energy takes place in your liver, and this process requires that you be well hydrated. I recommend drinking a gallon of water over the course of your day. This goal is easily met when you get into the habit of sipping water throughout the day, coupled with drinking a full glass before meals, upon waking and before bed.
PREMIER BRAND PROTEIN SHAKE: Increasing your protein intake is an essential part of your blueprint to weight loss and fitness. Protein shakes are a highly-recommended supplement, but if mixing,

COCONUT WATER: The clear liquid harvested from young green coconuts and now found in convenient cans on your supermarket shelves is being called “Mother Nature’s Sports Drink.” It is low in calories (only about 60 per can), naturally fat and
cholesterol free, rich in potassium, super hydrating and high in electrolytes, making it better than a sports drink for post-workout consumption.

So…what healthy drinks can you consume instead of sodas? Here are my 5 favorites:
floridaagenda.com
“I
don’t get it,” the stranger said as he walked up to me recently at Publix. “I read your column about cutting out sodas, but what’s left to drink if you do that? I can’t live without at least three Cokes a day!” Unfortunately, that reader’s addiction to Coke is almost certainly going to lead not only to weight gain but a host of potentially serious health issues. It’s just a matter of time. A 12 oz. can of Coke has a whopping 39 grams of sugar. Four grams equals one teaspoon, so this is the equivalent of drinking 9.75 teaspoons of sugar in one can. And the 140 calories contained in the drink are ALL derived from the sugar. Multiply this by his “at least three” a day Coke habit and we see the problem grow: he is consuming almost 30 teaspoons of sugar a day and 420 unhealthy calories just from sodas. Multiply that by 7 days a week…now we have 210 teaspoons of sugar and 2,940 empty calories just from his soda consumption in one week! That will lead to weight gain in the range of 20 to 25 pounds in one year. Think you are off the hook because you drink Diet Coke or some other diet soda? Think again! The sweeteners used in diet drinks are so unsuspectingly sweet they interfere with the body’s ability to judge calorie content. This, say researchers, leads to the individual unknowingly craving more and more sweet tastes. No surprise, then, that a San Antonio, Texas Heart Study which followed more than 5,000 people for seven or eight years found that although people who drank both sugar-sweetened and diet sodas gained weight, diet soda drinkers were more likely to become obese. And the more diet sodas the participants drank, the greater their weight gain. Researchers found in another study that compared to people who didn’t drink sodas at all, those who drank both sugar-sweetened and diet soda were more likely to develop what is called Metabolic Syndrome -- a cluster of symptoms often linked to obesity that increase risk for heart disease and diabetes.

England in recent years has recognized marriage equality, accepted gender transitioning and strengthened it laws against LGBT discrimination. What makes their gay scene so unique is their diversity in terms of culture and ethnicities throughout the population that resides and visits the city. You can found all walks of life in their gay village, the Soho District. And party at unique locations like Vauxhall, a railway area of arches and temples or at the recently transformed East End.
