The L-G-O-P? Dozens of National Republicans Sign Court Brief Supporting Marriage Equality By CLIFF DUNN
February 27, 2013 H 4
W
ASHINGTON, DC — In what amounts to a direct challenge to Speaker John Boehner and the conservative leadership of the U.S. House of Representatives, dozens of prominent Republicans, including several with senior ties to former President George W. Bush, have signed a legal brief in support of the constitutional right of gay Americans to marry. The document, which was also signed by four former state governors and two Members of Congress, reflects the growing rifts in the national Republican Party since its defeat in the November 2012 presidential election. It will be submitted this week to the U.S. Supreme Court as an amicus (or “friend of the court”) brief in support of a lawsuit challenging Proposition 8, the California voter-approved ballot initiative that bans same-sex marriage, as well as all other similar state prohibitions. The high court will hear that challenge next month, along with a suit seeking to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the 1996 federal law that defines marriage as between one man and one woman. The justices are expected to deliver a decision sometime in June. Experts say the brief has the potential to influence conservative justices in equal measure because of the legal arguments contained as much as for the influential names attached to it. As of February 26, the names of current and former GOP officials, grandees, and ideologues included 75 individuals not normally associated with LGBT rights activism. Meg Whitman, an unsuccessful Republican candidate for Governor of California who supported Proposition 8, signed the brief, changing her previous position. Others who signed include Stephen Hadley, a National Security Adviser under George W. Bush, Bush
Political Bedfellows: Jon Huntsman Jr., Ken Mehlman
Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez, David Stockman, Director of the Office of Management and Budget under Ronald Reagan, U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Miami), and Ken Mehlman, the former Chairman of the Republican National Committee (RNC), who came out in August 2010, which made him one of the most prominent openly-gay figures in the Republican Party. Mehlman serves on the board of the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which brought the Proposition 8 suit. Reports have him spending the past several months lobbying fellow Republicans to garner support for the brief. Former governors Jane Swift (Massachusetts), William Weld (Massachusetts), Christine Todd Whitman (New Jersey), and Jon Huntsman, Jr. (Utah) also signed. Huntsman—who supported civil unions but opposed gay marriage during his unsuccessful 2012 GOP presidential bid—last week wrote an article (“Marriage Equality Is a Conser-
vative Cause”) in which he likewise re-examined his earlier opposition. (See the related story in this week’s Agenda NATION section, Page 10). The Proposition 8 case already enjoys the backing of Theodore Olson, the former Bush Solicitor General who is also one of the suit’s two lead attorneys. The brief—which was written by Reginald Brown, who worked in the Office of White House Counsel under George W. Bush and Seth Waxman, a Solicitor General under President Bill Clinton—contends that marriage equality fosters family values by allowing the children of same-sex couples to grow up in two-parent homes, advancing traditional (and conservative) values that include “limited government and maximizing individual freedom.” This stands in stark contrast to the language contained in the RNC official platform, which supports amending the U.S. Constitution to define marriage as “the union of one man and one woman.” The brief cites prior Supreme Court
decisions that are popular with conservatives, including the 2010 Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission ruling that lifted campaign financing restrictions, and District of Columbia v. Heller, a 2008 Second Amendment ruling that overturned a law prohibiting handgun ownership. The signers of the legal brief have placed themselves squarely against Boehner and rest of the House Republican leadership, which has approved the expenditure of tax dollars to defend DOMA. In turn, those House leaders find themselves increasingly going against public attitudes towards marriage equality, which polls suggest have shifted dramatically in just the past 10 years. In 2003, roughly a third of Americans said they supported same-sex marriage; today a majority favor it, while recent polls indicate that roughly 70 percent of voters under 30 years old support gay marriage. The strongest opposition is to be found in the geographic South. Dean Trantalis, a longtime LGBT rights activist who served as co-chair of Americans for Equality, said the brief reflects a change in prevailing attitudes. “The long-held grip on the American psyche is now dripping through the fingers of the right-wing,” he said. “Respect for individual freedom has always been an American ideal, Democrat or Republican.” Trantalis, who in the mid-1990s worked successfully to enact and defend passage of Broward County's Human Rights Ordinance, which prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation, and is now a candidate for Fort Lauderdale City Commission, applauded the strategy of “Changing hearts, then changing minds,” and asked, “[Fort Lauderdale] Mayor [Jack] Seiler, are you next?”H

It’s Bitter in the Bahamas: Evangelical Bishop Warns of “Homosexual Avalanche”
F
REEPORT, BAHAMAS—The former head of the Bahamas Christian Council, an evangelical group of churches based in the Caribbean nation, is warning against the consequences of the “irreversible negative effects” including “spousal abuse, incest, and rape,” which he claims are “the root cause of some persons embracing the homosexual lifestyle.” Bishop Simeon Hall urged the building of “strong, loving, functional families [as] the last bastion against the homosexual avalanche.” Claiming a scriptural and scientific mandate for his views, Hall also claimed that, “Most churches and sociologists agree that adult behavior in all areas is shaped and influenced by what has happened in the family,” and argued that “same-sex marriage clearly violates the divine intent, [and] will also cause greater deterioration of the social order as we know it today.” In 2011, Hall urged gays to “seek help in turning away from their non-productive and deadly practice.” He called homosexuality “anti-family,” and claimed that it “goes against what God has ordained,” adding “It is deadly.”H

TALLAHASSEE — Gov. Rick Scott announced on February 20 that he has reversed his position and will expand Florida’s Medicaid program to cover the poor. The reversal is a stunning act by Scott, a former healthcare industry executive who ran as the Sunshine State’s chief executive in part because of his opposition to President Obama’s proposals to reform the way Americans receive their medical care. Scott, one of the most vocal Republican critics of the President’s healthcare legislation, had tried to sue the federal government in an effort to block the law, which opponents refer to disparagingly as “Obamacare.” When the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2012 that the law is constitutional, a number of Republican governors, including Florida’s Scott, opted not to expand their Medicaid programs to cover the poor. “Floridians are interested in jobs and economic growth, a quality education for their children, and keeping the cost of living low,” the governor said last summer. “Neither of [the] major provisions in Obamacare will achieve those goals, and since Florida is legally allowed to opt out, that’s the right decision for our citizens.” But in a news conference on Wednesday, Scott said he now supports a threeyear expansion of Medicaid, during the period when the federal government has promised to pay the expansion’s full cost, and before some of those costs shift to the states. “While the federal government is committed to paying 100 percent of the cost, I cannot in good conscience deny Floridians that needed access to health care,” Scott explained his 180-degree turn. “We will support a three-year expansion of the Medicaid program under the new health care law as long as the federal government meets their commitment to pay 100 percent of the cost during that time.” Gov. Scott, who is seeking re-election
in 2014, joins Republican governors in Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, and Ohio who have joined the Medicaid expansion. During his press conference, Scott said that his mother’s lifelong struggle to raise five children “with very little money” and her recent death helped shape his decision to back down from opposing the expansion. “Losing someone so close to you puts everything in a new perspective, especially the big decisions,” the governor said. Medicaid covers three million people in the Sunshine State, costing $21 billion each year. The expansion will extend coverage to one million more Floridians. Scott’s announcement is certain to anger many of his conservative supporters. A select committee of state legislators has been empanelled to review lawmakers’ options, with the expansion still requiring the ascent of the state’s Republican-dominated Legislature.

he news that a large number of Republican “greybeards” this week had signed a legal brief to the U.S. Supreme Court, calling for it to overturn DOMA and California’s Prop 8 left me with an excess of patriotic energy, and not a small amount of personal pride, since—for a time in the 1990s—I flirted with the Party of Lincoln (who himself may have possessed—in the words of his biographer, Carl Sandburg—a “lavender” streak), and even joined the masses of the selfish and intellectually-lazy in the occasional head-bob when Loudmouth Limbaugh regurgitated some Clintonhating trope or other. My short initiation into the ranks of the Grand Old Party (which, despite the name, is actually the youngest of the major political parties in the U.S.) started when I became disillusioned by the sense of privilege and perceived dishonesty exhibited during the first years of Bill Clinton’s Presidency. Don’t misunderstand me: I never drank the Kool Aid (or swallowed the pill, and believe me, that had to be one Helluva pill) in the early 1990s, refusing to buy into the hysteria that Clinton and the then-hated Hillary had conspired to murder their best friend (and White House attorney) Vince Foster, or that— despite the ridiculous allegations of commentators even more to the right than Limbaugh or Hannity—they had overseen a secret drug distribution operation in Mena, Arkansas while Clinton had served as that state’s youngest— and, by all accounts, even the legitimate ones—supremely entitled governor. The stories about Clinton’s feminine indiscretions only softened the ground up for the final hammer, which was of course the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Like a lot of Americans (and the entire French nation) I could care less in the

“bigger picture” that Bubbah had gotten his joint copped in the Oval Office. But the sense of entitlement and being aboveand-beyond accountability and the law (as evinced when he lied under oath to the grand jury about sleeping “with that woman”) brought things to a personal head for me, and I sought greener pastures among the Redder coalition, at least until I realized that my own personal political agenda was much better served through the advancement of (most of ) the goals of the Democrats. Which brings us to this week’s starstudded letter of encouragement to the Supremes (especially the conservative justices) from many of the A-List GOP, some of whom had never before spoken in favor of marriage equality, and some who had reversed a previous stance by signing the brief. This is precisely the sort of thing to keep Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, and other 2016 Democratic presidential hopefuls up nights: a GOP Revolution that embraces freedom for all Americans. Finally, the Party of the Great Emancipator can truly say that its leaders (okay, some of them: let’s not give credit where it isn’t due, meaning we can shit can the entire House GOP leadership, starting with Speaker John Boehner) suppor Civil Rights. The election campaign for Broward County Sheriff last year showed that there are as deep divides within the “gay political machine” as there are in the national GOP, with several local Dolphin Democrats breaking ranks with the official line to endorse the unsuccessful re-election bid of the Republican incumbent, Al Lamberti, against the Democrat winner, Scott Israel. The fact that Israel is a former Republican is nothing shocking in Broward County, where previously successful candidates like the late Ron Cochran switched parties to become
a Democrat and defeat a vulnerable Republican (to say nothing of the current plans—whatever they are—of former Republican Gov.—and now best pal of President Obama—Charlie Crist). That’s politics, but it’s also an American right to change one’s views, or to admit that what you once held true is no longer the case. One of the dirty little secrets of the Gayborhood is that there is a clandestine group of pro-Republican, pro-traditional values gays who comprise a significant minority of our little burgh. For every Dean Trantalis, who is a visible LGBT activist and supporter of progressive causes, there is a “closeted” conservative, some of them prominent community members, who donate to ‘our’ causes and support the good works of local LGBToriented service organizations but who covertly vote “Red” when the curtain of the ballot box is pulled behind them. I have even heard one prominent community leader refer to that “fucking Obama” when the subject of employee benefits (specifically healthcare) came up. The Republican elders who signed the Supreme Court brief have seen the future, and it is one where all Americans—gay and straight—have as much right to bitch about the occupant of the Oval Office, whatever his party may be, as they do to embark upon marital bliss. That’s a Big Tent even a Log Cabin could love.H

ATICAN CITY (ITALY) — The arrival of redrobed Roman Catholic cardinals to begin the conclave to elect a successor to Pope Benedict XVI has been overshadowed by reports in the Italian news media alleging gay sex scandals within the walls of the Vatican, reports the Holy See has vehemently denied. The deluge of innuendoes and negative press is, according to some Vatican experts, the fruit of carefully orchestrated leaks intended to weaken some contenders for the Papal Throne. On Saturday, February 23, the Vatican Secretariat of State said that the “widespread distribution of often unverified, unverifiable or completely false news stories that cause serious damage to persons and institutions” is “deplorable,” with Vatican officials comparing the reports to past efforts to influence
the papal election, and suggested the rumors are “based on judgments that do not typically capture the spiritual aspect of the moment that the church is living.” On February 11, Benedict announced that he would resign as leader of the world’s 1 billion Roman Catholics by the end of this month. Declaring that he was stepping down “in full liberty and for the good of the church,” the pope— who was born Joseph Ratzinger—cited advancing age and fatigue. Last week, articles in the Italian daily newspaper La Repubblica—a centerleft publication—and the Panorama—a weekly publication that skews centerright—reported that three cardinals appointed by Benedict to investigate an earlier Vatican scandal related to stolen documents had found evidence of highly-placed papal officials who were compromised by their personal—and possibly sexual—behavior.
“The report is explicit. Some high prelates are subject to ‘external influence’—we would call it blackmail— by non-church men to whom they are bound by ‘worldly’ ties,” the story in La Repubblica stated. The newspaper wrote that the pope made the decision to resign on December 17, 2012, the day same day he received a report compiled by the cardinals who had been assigned to investigate so-called “Vatileaks” scandal, in which the pope’s butler, Paolo Gabriele, was arrested and charged with stealing and leaking papal correspondence. La Repubblica claims that the report (“two volumes of almost 300 pages— bound in red”) describes several Vatican factions, including one whose members are “united by sexual orientation.” The newspaper quoted a source “very close to those who wrote [the report]” who claimed that, “Everything revolves

around the non-observance of the Sixth and Seventh Commandments.” The Sixth Commandment (“Thou shalt not commit adultery”) is linked in Roman Catholic doctrine to forbidding homosexual acts. The Seventh Commandment (“Thou shalt not steal”) forbids theft. According to La Repubblica, the cardinals’ report identified several places in and around Rome used by the members of ths gay faction, including a sauna in a suburb of the Eternal City, a villa, a beauty parlor, and a university residence belonging to an Italian archbishop. Although the Vatican does not explicitly condemn homosexuals, the church says that homosexuality is “intrinsically disordered,” and Benedict has forbidden sexually active gay men from applying for the priesthood.H

an apostolic administrator to govern the archdiocese in my place until my successor as archbishop is appointed.” He added, “Looking back over my years of ministry: For any good I have been able to do, I thank God. For any failures, I apologize to all whom I have offended.” O’Brien has headed the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland since 1985. He was elevated to cardinal in 2003 by Pope John Paul II, and was among the cardinals in 2005 that selected Benedict to serve as successor to John Paul. The cardinals will begin meeting on Friday (March 1) to decide when they will open the papal conclave. On February 24, the newspaper reported that four men had complained to the pope’s diplomatic representative in Britain. One of the four men who complained is a former priest who claimed that he left the priesthood because he could not live
with spending a lifetime under O’Brien’s authority. The man allegedly accused the cardinal of making an “inappropriate approach” in 1980 when the man was an 18-year-old seminarian and O’Brien his spiritual counselor. The other complainants are still priests. One spoke of inappropriate contact between him and O’Brien while the cardinal was still only a priest. The third said he was invited to spend a week “getting to know” O’Brien, who was by then an archbishop, and having to fend off “unwanted attention” and drunken advances. The fourth man claimed that the prelate took advantage of his position as a counselor when the man came to him for guidance during the first years of his priesthood, when O’Brien was an archbishop. According to the official church statement, “A number of allegations of inappropriate behavior have been made against the cardinal. The cardinal has sought legal
advice, and it would be inappropriate to comment at this time. There will be further statements in due course.” As a prince of the church, O’Brien’s record on gay rights has been mixed. Before his elevation to cardinal, O’Brien publicly acknowledged the large number of gay priests within the church, and voiced disapproval after a Scottish bishop said that homosexuals should be forbidden from teach in Roman Catholic schools. In recent years, O’Brien has spoken against LGBT rights and described homosexual behavior as immoral. He also opposed allowing gay men and women to adopt children, and argued against samesex marriage, calling it “harmful to the [couple’s] spiritual, mental and spiritual well-being.” In 2012, British LGBT rights group Stonewall selected O’Brien for its “Bigot of the Year” award.H

ONDON, UK — Just one day after a newspaper accused him of committing “inappropriate acts” with four current and former male members of the clergy, Cardinal Keith O’Brien announced on February 25 his resignation as the most senior Roman Catholic cleric in the United Kingdom. O’Brien also said that he would not attend Vatican deliberations for the selection of a new pope to replace Pope Benedict XVI, who stunned the world on February 11 by announcing his own resignation. But he would make no comment on the report by The Observer newspaper, which said that the Vatican had been made aware of accusations dating back to the 1980s. In a statement, O’Brien said that “the Holy Father has now decided that my resignation will take effect today, 25 February 2013, and that he will appoint

NATION DC Comics Slammed for Hiring Anti-Gay “Superman” Writer NEW YORK, NY — Comic book publisher DC Comics is the target of strong criticism from LGBT rights activists and civil libertarians for its decision to hire for its new “Adventures of Superman” digital imprint an award-winning writer who is a vocal opponent of same-sex marriage. DC is under fire for commissioning North Carolina-based writer Orson Scott Card to pen a two-part story arc which will launch its new “Adventures of Superman” anthology series. Card—best known for his 1985 science fiction novel “Ender’s Game”—is an outspoken critic of LGBT rights and marriage equality. In 1990, he wrote that laws which ban homosexual behavior should “remain on the books” in order to “send a clear message that those who flagrantly violate society’s regulation of sexual behavior cannot be permitted to remain as acceptable, equal citizens within that society.” In a 2004 essay, “Homosexual ‘Marriage’ and Civilization,” Card, who has written for competitor Marvel Comics, described “The dark secret of homosexual society—the one that dares not speak its name—is how many homosexuals first entered into that world through a disturbing seduction or rape or molestation or abuse, and how many of them yearn to get out of the homosexual community and live normally.” In 2009, Card was elected to the board of directors of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), which opposes marriage equality legislation across the country. Last year, during the battle over North Carolina’s Amendment One, the voter-approved constitutional amendment which defines marriage as between a man and a woman, Card authored an editorial titled “What Right Is Really at Stake?,” in which he argued that marriage equality would give “the [political] left the power to force anti-religious values on our children.”
In that opinion piece, he likewise condemned the idea of same-sex family units. “Gay people still have choices,” Card wrote. “A reproductive dysfunction like same-sex attraction is not a death sentence for your DNA or for your desire to have a family in which children grow up with male and female parents to model appropriate gender roles.” Openly gay comic book artist and writer Phil Jimenez tweeted his opposition to the hiring. “I’m encouraging people not to buy his work because when they do they actively support a foully bigoted man who uses his power and influence to affect public policy,” wrote Jimenez. Despite its decision to hire Card for the “Adventures” anthology, DC has previously taken a decidely progressive stand on the issue of marriage equality with its July 2012 issue of “Earth 2,” which introduced a re-launched classic DC hero, Alan Scott, the Green Lantern, as an openly gay man. That series, along with DC’s “Batwoman” line, is nominated for a 2013 Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Media Award. And rival Marvel Comics—for which the accused-homophobe Card has penned such titles as the “Amazing Ironman,” featured the June 2012 same-sex marriage (in title “Astonishing X-Men”) of the superhero Northstar—who came out as gay in 1992, the first major comic book character to so—to his longtime partner, Kyle Jinadu.
Prominent Roman Catholic Priest Charged with Dealing Crystal Meth HARTFORD, CT — In federal court last month, a well-connected Roman Catholic priest pleaded not guilty to charges of possessing and conspiring to sell crystal methamphetamine. Monsignor Kevin Wallin, 61, faces life in prison if convicted. Prosecutors say that Wallin, once a rising star in the church hierarchy, was leading a double life for years: a closeted homosexual who cross-dressed
and had sex with men, and who dealt crystal meth as well as being an addict. Investigators say he netted more than $300,000 in drug sales, and that he was in the process of purchasing an adult novelty shop to launder the money. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Bridgeport forced Wallin from his position as pastor of the Cathedral of St. Augustine in June 2011, after church officials were told by parishioners of seeing male guests visiting the priest at all hours in the church rectory, and of Wallin’s erratic personal behavior. A member of the board of Sacred Heart University, Wallin also served as chaplain to the Order of Malta, an international Roman Catholic charity. As a result of complaints, Wallin was suspended from his priestly functions in 2011, and church officials conducted an internal investigation in which they discovered a bag in the rectory that contained adult pornographic videos and sex toys. No evidence, however, was found containing child pornography or anything else related to children.
Mormon Ex-Governor Voices Support for Marriage Equality SALT LAKE CITY, UT — Former Utah Governor and 2012 Republican presidential hopeful Jon Huntsman, Jr. used a prominent conservative journal to announce his full support for same-sex marriage. Writing in The American Conservative on February 21, Huntsman insisted that, “There is nothing conservative about denying other Americans the ability to forge a marriage with the person they love. All Americans should be treated equally by the law.” In an editorial piece titled “Marriage Equality Is a Conservative Cause,” Huntsman called upon the political right “to take a hard look at what today’s conservatism stands for,” and said that supporting marriage equal-

ity for all Americans is “the right thing to do.” He also sounded a cautionary note to his fellow Republicans, urging them to take a long hard look at its unilateral stance against marriage rights. “The American people will not hear us out if we stand against their friends, family, and individual liberty,” Huntsman predicted. “Marriage is not an issue that people rationalize through the abstract lens of the law; rather it is something understood emotionally through one’s own experience with family, neighbors, and friends,” Huntsman wrote. “The party of Lincoln should stand with our best tradition of equality and support full civil marriage for all Americans.” A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Mormon Huntsman was elected to two terms as chief executive of the Beehive State before resigning to serve as U.S. Ambassador to China under President Obama. As Governor of Utah, he supported civil unions, but acknowledged on Thursday he believed that designation to be a first step towards full civil rights for LGBT Americans. “Civil unions, I believed, were a practical step that would bring all citizens more fully into the fabric of a state they already were—and always had been—a part of,” Huntsman wrote. “That was four years ago. Today we have an opportunity to do more: conservatives should start to lead again and push their states to join the nine others that allow all their citizens to marry.”H

Enjoying their company more than he had expected, Yossi changes his plans and checks into the hotel where they are staying on their leave. Although it has been leading up to this point from the beginning, it is here that
“Yossi” comes close to evolving into an Israeli version of Tom Ford's “A Single Man.” Some similarities existed all along, for instance, the fact that the lead characters in both films are widowers who never overcame the loss of their great loves. But it's in the erotically-charged scenes between Yossi and Tom—particularly the ones involving the beach skinny dip and what follows—that play like a heart-
felt homage to Ford's adaptation of the Christopher Isherwood novel. The heartstopping performances by Zehavi and Silbersatz, and most especially Knoller (who was also brilliant in “The Bubble”) are more than reason enough to see “Yossi.” (Now showing at Coral Gables Art Cinema and Living Room Theaters in Boca.)H

Not one to shy away from LGBT subject matter, Fox's breakthrough occurred with his third full-length feature. The festival favorite “Yossi & Jagger,” about the romantic relationship between gay Israeli soldiers, broke all sorts of new ground in the early part of the 21st century. The taut, queer thriller “Walk on Water” followed in 2004 and his masterwork, “The Bubble,” came in 2006. Fox's latest, the marvelous “Yossi,” is a sequel that picks up a few years after “Yossi & Jagger” ended. Now a paunchy, thirtysomething heart specialist at a hospital in Tel Aviv, closeted Yossi (reprised by Ohad Knoller) continues to mourn the death of Jagger, who was killed in Lebanon when they were still in the army. A workaholic loner and social outcast of his own making, Yossi rebuffs the sexual advances of nurse Nina, as well as the persistent invitations of fellow heart doc and ladies man Moti (Jagger Ashkenazi). Yossi prefers to watch porn on the Internet. A sex-site hook-up also doesn't go well. But when Yossi recognizes Jagger's mother Varda (Orly Silbersatz), at the hospital for a test, he sets the first of a series of events in motion that will forever change him. At first pretending not to know who she is, he later inserts himself into her life, even going so far as to show up at her home, where she lives with Jagger's father. It's obvious that they've never recovered from the loss of their son either. When Yossi pours out his heart to them about him and Jagger in one of the film's many heartbreaking scenes, they each react differently. Jagger's mother wants him out, but the father invites Yossi to see Jagger's old bedroom. The turning point occurs when Yossi runs into four young soldiers who missed their bus at a fast food joint. He offers

Rumors Bar and Grill A New Place to Graze on Hearty Food By RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN
R
umors Bar & Grill is the classy result of owners Shawn Bombard, Nick Berry, and Brendan Corman’s near-instant transformation of the space formerly occupied by Matty’s on the Drive. While much remains the same, there is a new dynamic about the bar, which has been spruced up, cleaned up, in an all-around come-on-in fashion. The kitchen at Rumors is open 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. and has some rather extraordinary items to tempt the more curious among us. If the thought of exploring Alligator Bites with Apricot Plum Sauce ($7.25) doesn’t raise an eyebrow or two, order this chewy favorite and be prepared to be surprised. It’s a delightful combo that is seldom on menus in the Gayborhood, so alligator hunt freely without fear of getting eaten alive. Another unusual delicacy—this one far more on the fattening side—is the Smoked Gouda Mac N Cheese
Nuggets ($5.50). In this original dish from the Rumors’ kitchen, macaroni and cheese is prepared using Smoked Gouda and then cubed into bite-sized pieces, which are then fried to perfection. Yes, we ate every one without a hint of guilt, and loved every second of the taste treat. So too did the curious bar-crowd that gathered around to see if we’d share. (The answer was "no.") Salads at Rumors come in the traditional assortment, all served in full and deep black bowls. While we briefly considered ordering the Chicken Greek Salad ($9.25) with its black olives, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers and gobs of Feta cheese, as well as the Spicy Buffalo Chicken Salad ($9.25) with its mixed greens, tomatoes, onions, and cheddar cheese topped with crispy buffalo chicken tenders, when it was decision time, we opted for the Classic Cobb Salad ($9.25), with mounds
of diced chicken breast, tomatoes, onions, cheddar cheese, chopped eggs, and bacon with Bleu cheese dressing served on the side. It was a winner, and extremely filling. Other dressing options include Ranch, Balsamic Vinaigrette, Honey Mustard, Thousand Island, Light Italian, Cajun Ranch, and Caesar. An extensive menu (11 varieties) of burgers can be ordered, each a thick healthy portion with lettuce, tomato, and onions available. Steer clear of the Naked Burger ($8.75) or Cheese Burger ($9.25) and explore your options further down the list. Our pick was a juicy, sloppy and glorious Patty Melt Supreme ($9.75) that delivered the burger smothered in grilled onions, Swiss cheese, Bleu cheese dressing, bacon and A1 Sauce served between toasted thick slices of rye bread. OMG! This one has to be tasted to be believed. From the sandwich menu, there are excellent options, all served with choice

DINING
of fries, sweet potato fries, potato tots, cole slaw, or potato salad (add $2.00 if you would like onion rings). Of the specialty sandwiches, we couldn’t miss trying the Turkey Reuben ($9.25), a non-traditional version of the classic served with sliced oven-roasted turkey, Swiss cheese, Thousand Island dressing, and cole slaw on toasted rye bread. A definite winner. So too was the Chicken Cordon Bleu Sandwich ($9.25), with its thick filet of chicken breast and sliced ham topped with Swiss cheese with lettuce and tomato, all wrapped inside a fresh Kaiser roll. There wasn’t a crumb left. Rumors has daily drink specials, with RUMORS BAR & GRILL 2426 Wilto Mondays particularly inviting for its $3.50 Margaritas. Wednesday they’ve got Chicken Wings for $1.00 each, available as Mild, Medium, Hot, Hellfire, BBQ, Cajun, Lemon Pepper, and Thai Sweet Chili. Hollandaise Sauce By CHEF JEAN DOHERTY
T
his sauce made with egg yolks and butter first appeared in the 19th century. Sources say it was called “Sauce D’Isigny” (named after a town in Normandy, France that’s renowned for the quality of its butter; a famous mouse-loving American named “Walt” takes his last name from the place, too). Hollandaise requires some skill and knowledge to prepare and hold. Properly made, it will be smooth and creamy with no hint of separated oil. The flavor will be rich and buttery, with a mild tang. It must be prepared and served warm, but not hot. There are a number of different methods for preparing a Hollandaise sauce. My method is using a “bain-marie.” All methods require near-constant agitation, usually with a wire whisk. This sauce is used for asparagus, poached fish, artichoke hearts, and of course Eggs Benedict. Ingredients • 3 fl oz of vinegar • 3 egg yolks • 5 oz of butter • Juice of half a lemon • Salt
Melt the butter slowly, and then skim the whey on top, keeping the butter warm. In a small saucepan, reduce the vinegar until about two tablespoonfuls are left, and cool it down by putting the bottom of the saucepan into cold water. Add the yolks and two tablespoonfuls of cold water, and whisk. Put your saucepan in a bain-marie which is close to boiling point and continuously whip. When the sauce has become thick enough, take the sauce pan out of the bainmarie and gently and progressively pour in the melted butter, and work as if you were making a mayonnaise. Add a pinch of salt, and then the lemon juice. You are the chef!H

Overdosing on Vitamins? It’s Easier than You Think
By andy kress
M
illions of people around the world take vitamins every day for one reason or another. These aid the body by compensating for certain deficiencies, helping to prevent disease. Yet most people who take vitamins know very little about what actually happens inside the body as a result. There are two types of classifications when it comes to vitamins, fat-soluble and water-soluble. As the name suggests, fat-soluble vitamins require the presence of fat to be absorbed into the intestinal tract, whereas water-soluble vitamins require liquid to be effectively absorbed in the same area. Note that no vitamins are absorbed through the stomach lining, but only after passing through it. Water-soluble vitamins are stored in small doses and dissipate quickly, so they need to be replaced often. Fatsoluble vitamins, on the other hand, linger in the system and can build to toxic levels. Knowing just these facts alone can save your health, especially
when it comes to over-consumption. Fat-soluble vitamins consist of Vitamin A,D,E, and K. Each one of these vitamins plays a vital role in your health. Vitamin A is needed for cell growth and development, prevents blindness and maintains healthy skin and hair. Good sources of Vitamin A are liver, salmon, eggs and fortified dairy. Vitamin D is necessary for calcium absorption and maintains healthy bones and teeth. Healthy choices for Vitamin D are fortified dairy, egg yolks and fatty fish. Vitamin E protects your fatty acids, maintains muscles and red blood cells, as well as other important antioxidants. Excellent sources of Vitamin E are eggs, vegetable oil, margarine, nuts and seeds. Last but not least: Vitamin K is essential for proper blood clotting. The best way to obtain your Vitamin K is through dark leafy green vegetables, pork, liver and green tea. All of these listed vitamins must be taken in their recommended doses, because it is quite easy to overdose. Moderation is the key! Water-soluble vitamins consist of biotin,
folate, niacin, pantothenic acid, riboflavin, thiamine, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12 and vitamin C. Biotin is responsible for energy metabolism. Good sources of biotin are found in egg yolks, soybeans, cereals, and yeast. Folate is needed to make DNA, RNA, and red blood cells, as well as synthesize certain amino acids. Healthy choices to obtain folate include, liver, yeast, broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables. Niacin is needed to metabolize energy and lower cholesterol. Niacin is found in lean meats, poultry and seafood. Pantothenic acid aids in energy metabolism, normalizing blood sugar levels, synthesizing antibodies, cholesterol, hemoglobin and some hormones. Pantothenic acid is found in almost all foods. Riboflavin is essential for your energy metabolism and aids in adrenal function. Riboflavins best sources are fortified cereals and grains, mushrooms, lean meats and poultry. Thiamine also aids in energy metabolism and helps maintain normal digestion, appetite and proper nerve function.
Pork, legumes, grains, cereals, nuts and seeds are great sources of thiamine. Vitamin B6 promotes protein metabolism, as well as metabolize carbohydrates and release energy. B6 is commonly found in meats, fish poultry and grains. Vitamin B12 is needed to make red blood cells, DNA, RNA and nerve fibers. B12 is found in all animal products. Vitamin C strengthens blood vessel walls, promotes wound healing, iron absorption and helps control blood cholesterol and prevents atherosclerosis. Vitamin C is found in citrus fruits and juices, melons, berries, peppers, potatoes, broccoli and many other fruits and vegetables. Vitamins are our single best defense against certain diseases and deficiencies as we age. Take them wisely and reap the rewards forever.H

Ibiza
The Gomorrha of the Mediterranean By ROBERT ELIAS DEATON
I
February 27, 2013 H 24
biza sits likes a hedonistic jewel in the Mediterranean Sea some 50 miles off the coast of the Spanish city of Valencia. The third largest of the Balearic Islands, Ibiza is known for its beaches, its parties, and its nightlife, which cranks up each night in the summer beginning at midnight and does not wind down until 6 a.m., if then. It is a playground of the rich, the famous and the gay (often all three), and to visit Ibiza is to rediscover what fun is—literally. There is a freedom here, from clothing, attitude, and discrimination. And all it takes to enjoy everything Ibiza offers is time and money (lots of money). From Fort Lauderdale, the smartest way to fly to Ibiza is on British Airways. Although not the cheapest (look to Air Europa or Delta for that), the British Airways flights offer the best connections coming and going, with two stops the minimum to expect when flying to this paradise in the sun. As the capital of the White Isle, Ibiza Town (Eivissa in Catalan) hosts the airport, and is the functioning heart of the island. For firsttime visitors, it is where you will want to anchor your stay, since it is central to anything the island has to offer, including one of Ibiza’s larg-
est beaches, Talamanca, just a 15 minute walk away. The magnificent harbor surrounds this city, fortified by the walls of the Dala Vila, from whose heights you can look down upon the lovely redtiled cupolas of the 16th century church of Santo Domingo. Dala Vila is also the perfect way to see the statue of General Joaquin Vara de Rey, the Ibicenco hero of the Cuban War, standing at attention in the center of the cobblestoned main square which bears his name. The best time to visit Ibiza is in June or September when you’ll miss the heat, crowds, and prices of the high season of July and August. Regardless of when you travel, you MUST book early for hotels as well as entrance into clubs, which is cheaper if prepaid. Of the various hotels in Ibiza town, the combination of the best view and the least expensive is the hostel called La Marina (Carrer Barcelona, 10, 07800), where you can book a penthouse room with a large terrace overlooking the harbor for 55-65 euros a day. Not fancy, and it is noisy being in the center of town, but for those of you who are dancing the night away, it quiets down when you need to sleep—should that unlikely occasion ever arise. For those who want a bit more style and a quieter spot to luxuriate, you can’t do better than the Ibiza Corsa Hotel & Spa (Carrer s’llla Plana, 0 07800). It’s a Philippe Starck design, with all the sophisticated elegance you would expect. Views of the Marina Botafoch yacht harbor engulf you visually, while the beach at Talamanca is only a stroll away. Ferries take you into Ibiza Town when you want some more excitement, but there is plenty of energy right on the spot with the
bars and bistros of Marina Botafoch right at your front door. The spa at the hotel is perfect for a sauna or a Turkish bath, a massage or whirlpool, plus weight room for training. For 102 Euros a day, including breakfast, it is quite the deal, all wrapped picture-perfect. Next week we’ll cover the nightlife in the various parts of the island. Catch your breath now, 'cause you’ll need the energy.H
