s we look back on 2013, we are reminded of all of the amazing accomplishments we’ve achieved. The Defense of Marriage Act – which was passed in 2008 – was ruled unconstitutional, and cleared the way for a number of states to lift their bans on same-sex marriages. The Employment Non-Discrimination Act was approved by the Senate, providing LGBT employees with additional rights in the workplace, and transgender rights were finally brought to the foreground. We’re so proud to look back on some of the biggest moments of 2013.

UNITED STATES V. WINDSOR MADE HISTORY

efficiency. Responsibilities, as well as rights, enhance the dignity and integrity of the person. And DOMA contrives to deprive some couples married under the laws of their State, but not other couples, of both rights and responsibilities.” Following the ruling, the court required the federal government to treat legally married same-sex couples on an equal basis with heterosexual married couples. Up until then, same-sex couples faced a myriad of complications including financial and medical issues. Because of the United States v. Windsor case, gay marriage was legalized in nine states this year: Maryland, Rhode Island, Deleware, Minnesota, New Jersey, Hawaii, Illinois, and most recently, New Mexico and Utah. In June 2013, the Supreme Court struck down section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in the case of United States v. Windsor, helmed by Edith Windsor who was a prime example of someone who was continuously dealt injustice. Windsor is the one who brought the case to the world’s attention after being constantly rejected by LGBT organizations that she sought support from. On the day of the biggest ruling of the year, Windsor politely stood in front of the crowded room to give her two cents. “Not only does a much larger portion of our country, and the straight members of our country, see us differently, as just people who live and love who bring up kids who will play with their kids, but our own community has come out and seen each other

and loved each other in a way that makes me courageous and proud and joyous every day.” Windsor became a household name over the summer, and became one of the highest-profile cases in years. Of course, the ruling wouldn’t have happened without the help of Justice Anthony Kennedy, who is often the swing vote in the Supreme Court. Kennedy, first appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1988, had a pivotal role in the case of United Staes v. Windsor, in which he wrote a majority opinion that lead to the eventual ruling that Defense of Marriage Act was unconstitutional. “DOMA’s principal effect is to identify a subset of state sanctioned marriages and make them unequal,” he wrote. “The principal purpose is to impose inequality, not for other reasons like governmental

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER (REPRINTED FROM DECEMBER 11, 2013)

I

hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday season. Because of you, our loyal readers, viewers and advertisers, we have had the most successful year in our history! When we decided at the end of last year to become your premier South Florida publication and focus specifically on Wilton Manors, Fort Lauderdale and Oakland Park for our pin point circulation, local content, neighborhood business features, your response was amazing. Our advertisers realized what a niche-marketing giant we really are with our ability to reach local consumers. Our valued advertisers realized they do not need to pay a premium in other publications to reach a market that will rarely, if ever, patronize their businesses. We recognized on behalf of our advertisers that over 90 percent of their business is derived from this 20-mile reach with our circulation and dynamic local content. Even most tourists stay within 20 miles of Wilton Drive. Likewise, we also realized our local readers and viewers love having a pure local reading and viewing experience every week plus 24/7 access to our two online platforms—www.guymag.net and www.foridaagenda.com. For the past 18 months, we have been investing passionately to create the first-of-its-kind ONLINE SOCIAL MEDIA MAGAZINE for readers and viewers to interact in real time with our advertisers and each other. I am thrilled to announce at our Holiday Party, December 12th at 6:30 PM at Dapur Restaurant, I will be launching and showcasing this amazing and innovative first-to-market online experience. We have created a platform where our advertisers social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, etc are connected to their GUYMAG.NET social media response pages in real time. Every comment, picture and video about local businesses is immediately populated to their GUYMAG.NET social media response page. This results in the first-ever current, online business marketing pages for our advertisers and for our readers and viewers to have up-tothe-second information on special offers, exciting events and everything else our advertisers want known about their clubs, bars and businesses. Consumers can upload pictures and videos to their favorite businesses social media response pages and enroll to receive special offers on their mobile phone in real time, redeemable on-the-spot. All readers and viewers will be able to watch a dynamic 60-second video on each business, and write real time reviews and comments on their own experience with the

establishments. Additionally, consumers will be able to map each business through our Google mapping experience, so finding a location has never been easier. Currently we have tens of thousands of unique monthly visitors and this audience is growing every day. In my seven years of publishing LGBT content, never have I been more thrilled and excited, and quite honestly proud, to announce that we have created a way to keep our print publications innovative and on the cutting edge for years to come. Every one of our advertisers will have the opportunity to have their print advertisement GO LIVE on our GUYMAG.NET Mobile Application. Here’s how it works. You simply download our mobile application “Engage Mobility.” By scanning the logo of the advertisement you are reading, you activate a business video of the establishment showcasing everything relevant about the business. This also works on our clients’ business cards, brochures, post cards, menus, etc, etc. This is amazing and game-changing for our company and for our loyal print readers who now have the ability to experience a business and make a buying decision with a GUY MAGAZINE or FLORIDA AGENDA newspaper print advertisement like never before. This is a monumental opportunity for our print advertisers to have the ability to communicate a message in the most powerful and proven way--VIDEO. Being first to market with America’s first LGBT ONLINE SOCIAL MEDIA MAGAZINE experience is exciting for those of us at Multimedia Platforms. Our readers, viewers and advertisers will be unique in their ability to enjoy and benefit from this new and exciting experience. The world is ever changing, and in order to serve you best, we must continue to invest and change with it. Only then can we work to earn your continued loyal support. Businesses can subscribe to our monthly Online Social Media Online Magazine platform beginning January 1, 2014. It’s an exciting time to be leading the massive LGBT marketing push. Readers, viewers and advertisers, please preview (on the following page) our revolutionary online social media client response page. Congratulations to Push Fitness for being one of our first “LIVE” online social media advertisers! I wish everyone a safe and rewarding holiday season. Your incredible support over the years has been truly inspiring to me. It is because of you, we are where we are today and have the platform to provide you the best LGBT Multimedia experience anywhere. THANK YOU!

church, but it is not necessary to talk about those issues all the time.” Musicians and actors also played a key role in 2013 by publicly announcing support of gay marriage and rights. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis released the anthem known as “Same Love,” which dominated both airwaves and the hearts of everyone in the gay community. Macklemore has stated that he is not gay, but felt that he had to release the song and video as a single in an effort to combat homophobia.

RUSSIA SPUN OUT OF CONTROL

While cases for equality were making their way into courtrooms across America, Russia was taking great strides backwards. The country has appeared to be regressing in terms of tolerance, legalizing a ban on any “gay propaganda” and possibly taking away any children in the country with gay parents. With the 2014 Olympics set to take place in Sochi, Russia, the backlash was severe. Tilda Swinton was among the first to make a bold statement, posing in front of the Moscow Kremlin with a rainbow flag – a crime that could have given the actress time in prison – in support of the LGBT community in Russia with the message “In solidarity. From Russia with love.” Some decided to boycott the Olympics, and President Obama recently announced that he would not be attending at all, making it the first time the president hasn’t attended in 10 years.

Russian President Vladimir Putin

Most recently, President Obama appeared to send the country a silent message of pride by announcing the U.S. delegates for the Olympics, including openly-gay athletes Billie Jean King, Caitlin Cahow and Brian Boitano.

ENDA WAS PASSED IN THE SENATE

With 61 votes (and the support of President Obama), the U.S. Senate voted in favor of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act in November. Senators from both sides spoke in support of the legislation, which will make it illegal for employers to fire, refuse to hire, or decline to promote employees on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity. The country’s first elected openly gay senator, Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), took the floor first, asking her peers to vote in favor of ENDA. “I realize that for some, this is not an easy vote,” said Baldwin. “I understand that for some, they may believe that it’s not good politics. But I want to say that I have a deep respect for those who choose to stand on the side of progress for our country this week. So for those that stand up this week and answer the call for courage, I can say with confidence your courage will be respected and remembered when the history of the struggle is written.” Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL) was among the many who voted in favor of the bill, claiming that it’s time to

January 1, 2014 H 13

As previously reported by the Florida Agenda, 2013 was truly the year of the gay-straight alliance. Celebrities came out of the closet in order to show others who might be facing dilemmas (particularly teens who have endured bullying) that it’s okay to be the person you are, regardless of what other people may say. But perhaps the biggest surprise of the year came from the Catholic Church. Recently, both Time and Advocate named Pope Francis their “person of the year.” He is the first nonEuropean pope in 1,200 years, and has been gaining support due to his humble attitude towards issue like the role of women in the Catholic Church and of course, gay rights. “If a homosexual person is of good will and is in search of God, who am I to judge?” asked Pope Francis in his now infamous July interview. Though Francis’s popular quote landed him a spot on Advocate Magazine’s cover (complete with a photoshopped “No H8” on his cheek), his views on gay marriage leaves little to the imagination. He said that he does not support any non-traditional marriages as the definition of marriage is clearly established by God. However, the pontiff knows that sometimes it’s better to leave your political baggage at the door. “The teaching of the church … is clear,” he’s said in the past according to Time. “I am a son of the

the victims of last year’s Hurricane Sandy. “No waves, no jellyfish, no seasickness,” Nyad said regarding her future in swimming. “This is going to be my thing for the next two years, to not forget people who have had their lives damaged so badly.” She reportedly raised $105,000.00 for the cause, and has plans to raise funds for other victims of natural disasters and terrorist attacks, such as the Boston Marathon Bombing. Nyad is currently writing a memoir, scheduled for a 2015 release.

CHARLIE CRIST ANNOUNCED HIS RUN FOR GOVERNOR

Charlie Crist announced his Democratic candidacy for governor of Florida in 2014 at a rally in St. Petersburg. The former Republican will have a tough year ahead of him, as Gov. Rick Scott’s team was already mud-slinging Crist before he even publicly announced his bid for his old job. When Crist took to the stage, he addressed the campaigns immediately. “Governor Scott has led like this,” said Crist. “Embrace the ideological fringes, take care of his friends, bully his opponents, hide from the public and the press and run from tough issues.” Scott’s ad cites Crist’s former views, comparing them to his current political views, branding him as a political chameleon. “When the people give you the honor of being their governor, you aren’t the governor of any one party, you are the governor of all Floridians,” said Crist. “No matter what they say, it is not a sin to reach across the aisle. It is your obligation to work together.”

move forward. “This is not a major change to law,” said Kirk. “It’s already the law in 21 states, and I think it’s particularly appropriate for an Illinois Republican to speak on behalf of this measure, in the true spirit of Everett McKinley Dirksen and Abraham Lincoln, who gave us the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 13th Amendment to the Constitution.” Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) joined Kirk in supporting the bill, saying that it provides all Americans a fair opportunity. “I’m dismayed that so many years have gone by – more than a decade – and this bill still has not become law,” said Collins. “It is time for us to enact this important legislation.”

DIANA NYAD SWAM TO FLORIDA

This year (on her fifth attempt), 64-year-old Diana Nyad became the first person to ever swim from Cuba to Florida, spending over 53 hours in the waters with a 35-person support team. Nyad, who is openly-gay, was a major role model for women everywhere this year. Ironically enough, as soon as Nyad completed the task, she told CNN that she was “through with the ocean.” Following her announcement, she did longdistance laps for 48 hours in New York’s Herald Square on October 8-10 in order to raise money for

In the first week of November, all married couples (including gay couples) employed by the Florida National Guard were allowed to apply for health, death and other benefits at federal facilities within the state. Florida National Guard has found a way to allow the benefits to wedded couples without violating Florida’s ban on same-sex marriage, according to the Miami Herald. “In order to meet the state constitution and meet federal intent, we moved the functions from state buildings to federal buildings and we’re in compliance all the way around,” said Lt. Col. James Evans, the director of public affairs for Florida National Guard. “We want to ensure that everyone is treated equally and all Florida National Guard members get their benefits in the same place.” Nadine Smith, executive director of Equality Florida, had high praise for the measure.

YEAR IN REVIEW “We are pleased that gay National Guard members won’t have a separate, more difficult process for getting benefits for their spouses,” said Smith. “This move ensures that the same procedure applies regardless of sexual orientation.” The gesture resonated strongly with the rest of the National Guard, who just recently granted the benefits to the remaining states who still had effective bans on same-sex couples.

BRADLEY MANNING BECAME CHELSEA MANNING

Army private Bradley Manning was sentenced to 35 years in a military prison back in August for leaking over 700,000 documents to the controversial website, WikiLeaks. While everyone knew the sentence was coming, it came as a bit of a shock when Manning revealed his plan to live out the rest of his life as a woman, asking to be called “Chelsea Manning” from now on. Manning also asked that media outlets use female pronouns when referring Manning’s attorney read a statement from the army private on NBC’s “Today” show: “I am Chelsea Manning. I am a female. Given the way that I feel, and have felt since childhood, I want to begin hormone therapy as soon as possible. I hope that you will support me in this transition. I also request that, starting today, you refer to me by my new name and use the female pronoun (except in office mail to the confinement facility). I look forward to receiving letters from supporters and having the opportunity to write back.” The letter was signed “Chelsea E. Manning.” Since then, Manning has said that she will do everything

The dark comedy known as “Orange Is the New Black” was one of the biggest surprises of the year in pop culture. The show, which follows the tale of Piper Chapman, pushed boundaries like never before with lesbian relationships, a transgender character (who is actually transgender in real-life), and a strong sense of feminism all commingling in one setting: prison. Chapman’s tale was originally in the form of a memoir before Jenji Kohan (creator of “Weeds”) got her hands on it. “I’m always looking for those places where you can slam really disparate people up against one another, and they have to deal with each other,” Kohan told NPR. “There are very few crossroads anymore. We talk about this country as this bing melting pot, but it’s a mosaic. There’s all these pieces, they’re next to each other, they’re not necessarily mixing. And I’m looking for those spaces where people actually do mix.”

possible to go to court for gender reassignment procedures.

GENDER-NEUTRAL BATHROOMS WERE CREATED

A new piece of legislature made Philadelphia one of the most LGBT-friendly city in the world. The legislation requires that new or renovated cityowned buildings include gender-neutral bathrooms in additional to male and female bathrooms, according to WCAU, NBC’s Philadelphia affiliate. “My goal is for Philadelphia to be one of, if not the most, LGBT-friendly cities in the world and a leader on equality issues,” said Nutter. The legislation also makes Philadelphia the first city to offer businesses tax credits to encourage providing transgender-specific health benefits. In addition, it revises Philadelphia’s anti-discrimination law to include transgender people, extends decision-making rights to life partners on medical and other issues, and changes city forms and websites to offer same-sex couple options as well as a transgender option. “This is a city that is truly respecting all its citizens,” said state Philadelphia Rep. Brian Sims. “It is because of that respect that we are indeed a first-class city and we will continue to shine.”

TRANSGENDER BIRTH CERTIFICATES MADE WAVES

California and New Jersey passed transgender birth certificate bills in the Senate, though as of print, New Jersey is still waiting for Gov. Chris Christie to sign or veto the bill. Most federal forms of identification can be updated without proof of surgery, but if not all forms of identification match, transgendered individuals could

be accused of fraud. In New Jersey, a law currently stands that individuals born in the Garden State must prove that they had gender-confirming surgery before updating birth records. In September, the bill was passed in California, known as Assembly Bill 1121. “Transgender people are entitled to have their official documents and their legal name reflect their true identity without a burdensome and expensive process that endangers their personal safety,” said Assembly Majority Leader Toni Atkins in a statement. “I am hopeful that the governor will support this simple bill that will greatly enhance the lives of transgender Californians.”

MARCO RUBIO STILL SUCKS

Marco Rubio had a rocky year. At the Conservative Political Action Conference in March, Rubio defended his perceived bigotry, which didn’t exactly help matters for the rumored GOP presidential candidate. “Just because I believe that states should have the right to define marriage in the traditional way does not make me a bigot,” said Rubio. In June, the senator threatened on the Andrea Tantaros Show to abandon his own bill on comprehensive immigration reform “if [the] bill has something in it that gives gay couples immigration rights and so fourth.” He went on to say “it kills the bill.” At the recent Values Voter Summit, Rubio talked up the American dream: “I’ve also been lectured, as many of you have, that we need to stop talking about social issues if we want to win elections, but if we’re serious about saving the American dream, we can’t stop talking about these issues.” Rubio also blocked Judge William Thomas’ nomination to the Federal District Court for the Southern District of Florida this year, effectively stopping him from becoming the first openly gay black judge.
