ssentially the gay version of “Girls,” “Looking” is a new comedy-drama television show that focuses on a group of gay friends living in San Francisco. The show stars Jonathan Groff as Patrick, a gay man with a successful career in the video game industry, Frankie J. Alvarez as Agustin, an artist’s assistant and Patrick’s new best friend, and Murray Bartlett as Dom, a man who’s dealing with issues turning 40. While Indiewire was the first to call the series “a gay, West Coast-centric answer to ‘Girls,’” it’s apparent that the comparison is intentional HBO is even airing the shows in the same hour time slot. Jonathan Groff (of “Glee” fame) is a videogame developer who’s – wait for it – looking for love. Get it? You were thinking more along the lines of Grin-
dr’s looking weren’t you? It’s okay, we all were. The trailer unveils some crisp, stylish shots of the show as well as something that’s all too common in the gay community: One friend telling another friend, “You have to find someone who under-
stands you,” to which Patrick replies, “it’s not that easy to find.” Longing for love in a metropolitan area is nothing new, but it still hits close to home. Will Patrick ever find love? If “Girls” is any indication of “Look-
ing,” we’d like to think he’ll find love in some awkward way. In a time where gay marriage is popping up left and right (especially left, in California where the show takes place) and gay rights are on the rise, it’s refreshing to see a show that deals with more mature, subtle gay topics instead of just hookups and boyfriend drama. “‘Looking’ is specifically about the gay community, but partially because the characters aren’t having struggles with their sexuality, straight people can watch it and see themselves,” Groff told the SFGate recently. Seriously, think of every show you’ve watched in the past year or two with supporting gay characters – They’re on fire and they’re here to tell you about their recent sexploits. While sex will undoubtedly be the topic of many subplots in Looking, it doesn’t appear to be the central theme, and for that we’re thankful.

Katie Couric: Transphobia or ‘Teaching Moment’
New Mexican Trailblazer Donates Leftover Equality Funds Las Cruces, NM – Dona Ana county clerk Lynn Ellins made a huge impact on the community last August when he decided to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. The case eventually went to the state’s supreme court where it passed a vote and joined the ranks of other states that legalized same-sex marriages. Now, Ellins has taken additional steps
Chris Christie Vetoes New Jersey Trans Birth Certificate Trenton, NJ – Last week, New Jersey governor Chris Christie vetoed a bill that was designed to help transgender people streamline legal documents, citing the bill’s failure to maintain “appropriate safeguards” against fraud. The bill would have allowed New Jersey residents to change the gender on their birth certificates without proof of surgery. Residents would have only been asked to provide a doctor’s affidavit that states they had obtained appropriate treatment, including hormone therapy or other nonsurgical ventures. Christie also reiterated the importance of a birth certificate in his statement. “...The production of a birth certificate is a prerequisite to obtaining other critical identification documents that favor into decisions concerning
RNC Member says Russia’s Antigay Law is ‘Common Sense’ Washington, D.C. – Republican National Committee member Dave Agema, a Michigan politician, has the LGBT community up in arms over a recent post made on Facebook where he calls the Russian gay “propaganda” law “common sense.” Agema, known for making a number of antigay comments, posted the remark last week, including a link to a Washington Blade article that centered on the law on the Illinois Family Institute’s website. Though the post was only available to friends of Agema, sources took a screenshot of the comment and article and sent it to the publication. “Read their law. Common sense in Russia,” Agema wrote. The article linked states that “mainstream press” coverage of the law doesn’t “include any details of the text of the law and its inoffensive – some would argue wholly appropriate – content.” Agema’s no stranger to antigay controversy – just last year he posted an uncomfortable article on his Facebook that claimed to be an analysis of the LGBT community, told a Republican gathering in Michigan that gays support health care reform because such a high percentage are dying of AIDS, and sponsored a resolution that reiterated the Republican party’s opposition to gay marriage. Agema has yet to respond to the Blade’s requests for comment.

New York, NY – The LGBT community had their eyes on Katie Couric last week when she sat down with Carmen Carrera and Laverne Cox to discuss trans issues that the two women face. But when Katie sat down with Carrera (of RuPaul’s Drag Race) and Cox (of Orange Is the New Black), things got a little uncomfortable for viewers. The news anchor appeared fixated on transgender surgeries and genitalia (or “private parts” as she called them) instead of the struggles the women face on a day-to-day basis. Cox, who broke out trans hate crime statistics, was more concerned about discussing hardhitting issues, while Carrera “recoiled” when Couric asked about the current state of her genitals. While both guests were noticeably uncomfortable – Carrera squirming, Cox appearing to seethe with anger – and viewers were just as frazzled (Tweets directly to Couric ranged from upset to downright flabbergasted). On Couric’s Follow Up Friday segment, she took the
opportunity to address the issue. “Now, even if some thought my question was off base, I wanted to make sure my question – and Carmen’s answer – stayed in the show as a teachable moment for me, as well as our viewers,” Couric said. “I’m really proud we were able to spotlight such an open and honest conversation with Carmen and Laverne Cox, who are both terrific, about the myriad of struggles that this often maligned, marginalized and misunderstood community faces.”
employment, financial services, education, and travel,” Christie’s statement said. “Birth certificates are often required to complete myriad security-related tasks. Accordingly, proposed measures that revise the standards for issuance of amended birth certificates may result in significant legal uncertainties and create opportunities for fraud, deception, and abuse.” New Jersey state Senate passed the bill just last month following its passage by the state Assembly last June.

to help protect the law. Last Friday, Ellins announced that he will be donating the leftover funds raised to defend his opposition to the ban to a New Mexican equality organization, named the New Mexico Unites for Marriage Equality, according to the Las Cruces Sun-News. Shortly after Ellins received heat from anti-LGBT advocates, a website was created to raise funds for the effort, raking in over $33,000 from 647 donors, reports the Sun-News. The $33,000, combined with $3,000 that came from private donations, was put into a trust account by Ellins’ attorney. Following the Supreme Court ruling in December, Ellins was left with “a few thousand dollars” of the fund, which he now plans to donate. “We did the right thing at the right time by issuing the licenses last August, and we’re doing the right thing now by donating the balance of our legal-defense fund to the coalition that stood beside us while we waited for the Supreme Court to make its determination,” said Ellins in a press release.

TOP FLORIDA EMPLOYERS JOIN ANTI-GAY COALITION BY GRANT JAMES
January 15, 2014 H 12
W
ashington, D.C. – Though nearly 1,000 couples have already married in Utah, the Supreme Court has stepped in to pre-vent any further couples
from doing so. Tallahassee, FL – Many of the state’s largest employers just launched the Florida Business Coalition for a Competitive Workforce on Monday, aiming to pass a bipartisan bill that would ban discrimination based on gender or sexual orientation in the workplace. According to Equality Florida, the Competitive Workforce Act would modernize state law to include anti-discrimination protection based on sexual orientation and gender identity or expression. Sponsored in the House of Representatives by Joe Saunders (D-Orlando) and Holly Raschein (R-Key Largo), and by Senator Joe Abruzzo (D-Wellington) in the Senate, the bill is currently receiving bipartisan support. “We are proud to see so many of Florida’s largest employers taking a stand to encourage the legislature to pass the Competitive Workforce Act,” said Nadine Smith
Holly Raschein
(CEO of Equality Florida) in a statement. “Increasingly we hear from companies that are contemplating relocation or expansion, and they want reassurance that their diverse work force will be able to live in a state where they and their families will be treated fairly. The corporate culture understands that top talent looks not only at a company’s internal policies, but also at the community they will call home.” The statement says that 84% of the nation’s largest companies have adopted comprehensive anti-discrimination policies that include sexual orientation and gender identity, as evidenced in a report concluded from the 2014 HRC Corporate Equality Index. The companies listed that support the bill include C1 Bank, Florida Blue, University of North Florida, Carlton Fields/Jorden Burt, Haskell, CSX, HSN, Darden, Tech Data, Wells Fargo, and Walt Disney World. While Walt Disney himself is constantly referred to as a highly discriminatory man, the park is anything but. Every year, a loosely organized pride event, Gay Days, is held at the park (despite last year’s One Milion Moms
Joe Abruzzo
protest), with attendees in the thousands. Just last year, the Walt Disney Company named George Kalogridis as president of Walt Disney World, making him the first openly gay president of the theme park. While the other companies – including Fortune 500 Companies – may not jump out as “pro-gay” to readers, they are surprisingly so. Wells Fargo was recognized by DiversityInc as one of the best companies for diversity and a top company for LGBT employees, and was also given a perfect score by the Human Rights Campaign on Corporate Equality Index (2013). The University of North Florida has an entire LGBT Resource Center available for use (UNF is one of two universities in Florida with a full-time staffed LGBT Resource Center), and C1 Bank attended the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Recognition Dinner in Saint Petersburg. “Since recruiting and retaining talent is critical to our long-term business success, Coalition members understand that Florida employers must attract qualified and diverse applicants who reflect the diverse population of the state,” the employers said in a statement.

ASK THE FITNESS MAN BY PETER JACKSON, CPT
/floridaagenda
DO IT FOR YOUR HEALTH, STUPID!
N
ew Year’s resolutions invariably include plans to lose weight and get in shape. Commercial gyms are packed in January with well-intentioned people expecting immediate results. Unfortunately, by February the crowd starts to thin when changes are not apparent and by March only a handful of the most determined remain. Here is the most important prerequisite to starting and sticking to a fitness plan: Understand it’s about improving your health and quality of life, no matter your age. Not too long ago I overheard this comment by a man in his 50s who was easily overweight by 20 pounds: “I’m not vain. I don’t need to work out. A few extra pounds won’t kill me.” I was itching to jump into the conversation and let him know how wrong he was. Improving our health and quality of life – not bulging biceps or
washboard abs – should be the primary motivating factor in starting a fitness program. According to a Harvard study, carrying around extra weight gives you a higher-than-average risk of developing any of 50 serious health issues including one of the nation’s leading causes of death: heart disease. The adult body has about 60 thousand miles of blood vessels. For every 10 pounds of fat you pack on, you are adding another 10,000 miles of blood vessels which force your heart to work harder 24 hours a day. Let’s take this scenario a step further: Individuals who exercise regularly will have a resting heart rate of about 60 beats per minute or less. A deconditioned person who does not exercise may have a resting rate of about 80 or more. Women tend to have a slightly higher heart rate than men, as do children. Obesity, stress and many other factors can, of course, speed your heart rate up considerably, even though you may
appear to be in great condition. Just for the moment, suppose that you were at complete rest for a full 24 hours. A comparison might go something like this: a) GUY WHO EXERCISES: Sixty beats per minute, times 60 minutes, equals 3,600 beats per hour. Times 24 hours, equals 86,400 beats per day. b) GUY WHO DOESN’T EXERCISE: Eighty beats per minute, times 60 minutes, equals 4,800 beats per hour. Times 24 hours, equals 115,200 beats per day. Even at complete rest, a deconditioned person who does not exercise his heart forces it to beat nearly 30,000 times more during every day of his life. But no one is at complete rest 24 hours a day, and for ordinary activity, like getting up from a chair, walking across the room, and climbing a flight of stairs, the deconditioned heart would beat
SPOTLIGHT EXERCISE: ARNOLD PRESS

HEALTH
Bodybuilding icon Arnold Schwarzenegger invented this shoulder exercise which he called “the best shoulder exercise I know of.” Start with a dumbbell in each hand, palms facing the body at shoulder height. Next, press the dumbbells to an overhead position, rotating the dumbbells until your palms are facing forward. Make sure to lock your elbows and push your dumbbells as high as you can. Now slowly lower the dumbbells, returning to the start position with palms facing your body.

proportionately faster than a conditioned heart for the same activity. Exercise is the only way to strengthen and build up muscles, including the heart, and ward off a bunch of health problems. The body uses muscles to store energy and protein that the immune system can draw upon when required. Exercise is therefore especially important for maintaining the health of people with compromised immune systems such as HIV. So if shedding weight and getting fit are part of your New Year’s resolutions, make sure you understand that looking good will be the benefit, but improving your health and longevity are the true rewards. If you are having trouble getting started on your own, join a fitness class or hire a personal trainer. Peter Jackson, owner of Push Fitness, Club One CrossFit and Inner G Yoga, is a personal and nutrition coach known for his cutting-edge fitness and fat-loss programs for individuals, couples and small groups. put this soup on the New Year’s Eve menu and a lot of you were asking for it… here you go.... Happy new year !! The largest truffle markets in France (and probably also in the world) are in Vaucluse and Lalbenque in Quercy. These markets are busiest in the month of January, when the black truffles have their highest perfume. As of December 2009, black truffles were sold for about ¤1,000 per kilo at these markets and then at ¤3,940 per kilo by retail sellers…. “The most learned men have been questioned as to the nature of this tuber, and after two thousand years of argument and discussion their answer is the same as it was on the first day: we do not know. The truffles themselves have been interrogated, and have answered simply: eat us and praise the Lord.” — Alexandre Dumas(1802-1870) • Good olive oil • 1 onion, chopped • 1 2 ounces mushrooms • 4 cups chicken stock • 1 sprig fresh thyme • B lack truffle oil • ½ cup of heavy cream • S alt and pepper
soups, although I think I may have a reputation for doing “rich” food!) season with salt and pepper, to taste. Pour soup into a blender, (you might need to do this in stages), and don’t forget to remove what’s left of the sprig of thyme. Process until smooth. Return to the saucepan and bring to a simmer. Pour in the black truffle oil, and be careful not to over do this. A dash should do the trick… TASTE…you are a chef!!
Although born in Dublin, Ireland, Chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.

Clean the mushrooms by wiping them with a dry paper towel. Don’t wash them! Trim off any bad parts, and coarsely chop them. Set aside. Heat the olive oil in a large pot. Add the chopped onions, and cook for 3 to 5 minutes. Add the chopped mushrooms, thyme and stock and cook for 10 minutes. Reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes. apur Asian Tapas & Lounge is the type of spot that’s constantly evolving. At its core, the integrity of the business remains, but owner Edi Mulyanto isn’t afraid to shake things up. “We’re always trying new things,” owner Mulyanto told us. “When I have the time, I’m constantly trying out new things with my chef.” The restaurant recently surprised patrons with nearly a dozen new items on the menu that fit right in with their existing beloved tapas (essentially just small and big plates). Dapur’s goal is to get people to try unique combinations, and our latest visit was no exception. We started with wok-seared edamame ($5.50), which had a fantastic sweet, smoked flavor. The portion was easily enough for three to four people, making this dish a must for an appetizer. Next, we ordered an oldie but a goodie – the Spicy Tuna Tartar ($12). The chilled, freshly chopped tuna and kimchee on top of the warm, crispy rice patties is the embodiment of Dapur’s style, which includes blending warm and cold foods – admittedly one of Mulyanto’s favorite things to do. Next up was The Masterpiece ($14): seared tuna, sauteed spinach and shiitake mushrooms with a miso glaze. This hybrid-sushi was quite possibly one of the most unique and delicious
things that we’ve ever tried in the realm of Asian-fusion food. The soft chewy consistency of the mushrooms coupled with the tender sauteed spinach was out of this world, and the seared tuna with a cool center was just the icing on the cake. The Yuca and Steak ($10) is a great appetizer – it’s a small portion that still satisfies and fills you up. The appetizer combines crispy yuca with thinly seared skirt steak, with a tangy teriyaki sauce on top; this is for the tapas lover who might be a little too scared of the sashimi. The Surf & Turf roll ($16) is another option for those who tend to stray from the raw fish. Though the name sounds familiar, the roll is anything but. Made with shrimp tempura, skirt steak, cucumber, asparagus, cream cheese and teriyaki sauce, this roll is every flavor and texture your mouth wants. Our eyes were bigger than our mouths, so the Bottoms Up roll ($13) – salmon, asparagus, masago and thinly sliced lemon on top – had to go in a box home with us. By the way, we never eat leftovers; this was an exception. Dapur Asian Tapas & Lounge is now open for lunch Monday through Friday from 12 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Don’t forget to check out their new menu items, available now. Gregg Shapiro: What is the genesis of the Kutumba Theatre Project? Kim Ehly: I founded Kutumba out of a desire to speak to, speak for, and entertain the community I have been a part of for 25 years. I love the theatre and I love the LGBT community. Kutumba means to leap, to strut proudly, a unique bond amongst community members, and family or kin. I want to create a place that people in our community look forward to experiencing themselves and our ideas onstage.
Fort Lauderdale Children’s Theatre is located in the Galleria Mall. For Kutumba productions, you have the audience enter through what you described as the “guts” of the mall for a “backstage” feel. Having lived and worked in NYC as an actor, I enjoy the industrial, off-off Broadway feel of having our audience enter through the back of the building. Patrons enjoy mingling and adult beverages in the lobby before the show. Once we open the doors to the theatre, the first thing our audience sees is the living, breathing theatre space where the action will take place. The current Kutumba production Julie Johnson is set during the 1980s. What are some of your favorite ‘80s memories? I loved the ‘80s! The music, the fashion, valley girl talk...the ‘80s were a fun time, pre-cell phones and computers in everyone’s hands. It really was a completely different world then.
What was involved in the process of selecting Julie Johnson? I’ve been fond of this play for years and gave it to a producer eight years ago to do. I played Julie in that production. Happily, I am directing this time and get to influence the overall story. One of the themes of Julie Johnson is how best friends Julie and Claire continue to learn new things about each other. Have you had similar experiences with best friends? I think we are always learning new things about our close friends. Everyone has parts of themselves that are more challenging to reveal. Julie and Claire have likely been hiding their feelings for a long time. One of the best parts of life are the surprises, the unexpected, the moments when you are willing to be the most vulnerable with someone you know is safe enough to do that with. Have you started to think about your next Kutumba project? Our next project is a new play called, Outlaw Jean. We are looking to cast the show immediately. The play is a badass modern day outlaw story with a woman at the helm. It is written by MJ Kaufman, a recent playwright graduate of the Yale School of Drama. It is a last minute addition, so as long as we can find the right actors on short notice, we plan to open in April. Julie Johnson runs through Feb. 9 at Galleria Studio Theatre (in the Galleria Mall), 2542B E. Sunrise Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale. Visit brownpapertickets.com/event/511855 for more info.

What are the challenges and rewards of running an LGBT theater company in Fort Lauderdale? Challenges: Probably getting the word out about all of our productions and being sure that the people who want to do something cultural know about it. We often hear, “this
You previously mentioned there being a focus on the “L” in LGBT. Many companies bill themselves as LGBT focused, but most are focused on the G. There is simply more material out there for the G. Our aim is to serve the L as much as possible in addition to the GBT. I am a therapist at SunServe and work a lot with the Transgender population. theatre reminds me of the shows we used to see in Manhattan.” I think people in South Florida are hungry for stouthearted theatre. Our motto is “bursting with stouthearted creativity” and that is what we are striving for. The rewards are numerous. What a gift to reach people and make them think, laugh, cry, dream, desire, change, and believe in themselves, their true selves.

She directed the hit play, The Beebo Brinker Chronicles, the second production by her company Kutumba Theatre Project, in Sept. 2013. The author of two one minute plays for the One Minute Play Festival, scheduled for Jan. 25 and 26 in Miami, Kim wrote and directed her debut play, Baby GirL, in 2012, the inaugural Kutumba production. For that production, Kim received the Silver Palm Award for Outstanding New Playwright, as well as a Carbonell Award nomination and a Broadway World Award for Best New Play. Additionally, Baby GirL was named in the Top Five Plays of 2012 by the Sun Sentinel, Top Ten in the Miami Herald, and Best Debut by Florida Theatre On Stage. Kim holds a BFA in acting/directing as well as a Master of Social Work with a clinical focus, both from FAU.
