GUIDE TO PRIDE FORT LAUDERDALE 2014 BY GRANT JAMES COVER PHOTOS BY STEPHEN KUTTNER AND OTHERS

8 February 26, 2014

Sunday 3/02

Starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Pride begins. If you’re feeling rowdy, you can head to Holiday Park for a DJ and live performances (frozen cocktail in hand of course), but if you’re more of a slow-burn type of partier, the War Memorial Auditorium has got you covered. All types of vendors will be present from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, so you’ll definitely want to peruse the aisles of the air-conditioned auditorium to shop and take a breather in between stints outside. Headlining Saturday’s event are performers Tiffany (“I Think We’re Alone Now”) and Judy Tenuta (comedian and actress extraordinaire), so don’t forget to pack your nostalgia as well.

Perhaps you’re a tad tired from Saturday’s activities, or maybe it was that last drink you told yourself not to consume (but did anyway). For whatever reason, you may need a minute before you can pick up where you left off on Saturday. Thankfully, Pride has a number of food vendors (both healthy and comfort foods) to satisfy your cravings. You might also want to take this opportunity to peruse the indoor vendors you forgot to check out on Saturday, as well as the famed AIDS quilt on display, both inside the War Memorial Auditorium. The AIDS quilt is a reminder of those who were here before us, or those we lost along the way. It is an essential part of Pride. When you’ve got your second wind, head outside to see Lisa Lisa (of Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, who rose to fame with “I Wonder If I Take You Home”), followed by headliner Sheena Easton (“Morning Train,” “Strut”).

Though Pride Fort Lauderdale officially starts on Saturday, it’s also hosting a comedy night on Friday, so clear your schedule. This year Bruce Vilanch and Judy Gold will perform. Gold (who was featured in the Florida Agenda last week) told us to expect a sidesplitting evening, with a few choice expletives peppered in of course. Vilanch, of Hollywood Squares fame, has quietly been the head writer for the Oscars since 2000, as well as a featured writer for the Tonys, Grammys, and Emmys as well. few times a year, we get the opportunity to showcase our pride right here in South Florida. Now in its 37th year, Pride Fort Lauderdale is one of the largest and longest running pride events in the area. Produced by Pride South Florida, this annual event gives back to the community long after the weekend ends. The non-profit organization provides locals with additional events throughout the year, and proudly states that 100% of the profits from Pride Fort Lauderdale will go back into the community as well (through a grant program each spring). The event spans the entire weekend, providing entertainment for anyone that’s looking for a good time. One thing is for certain though, this year, ‘80’s nostalgia is in full effect.

iding Inside the Baseline, the tennis-themed book from publisher Bobby Blair (with co-writer Barry Buss), carries a strong message of revelation and courage, and is being openly endorsed by tennis legend Billie Jean King, award winning columnist L.Z. Granderson, and tennis coach Sven Groeneveld. Himself a nationally ranked junior tennis star in the 80s, Blair says his failure to declare his homosexuality to his family, his friends and his tennis competitors and colleagues stands as his greatest regret, particularly in light of the untimely death from drug abuse of friend and former boyfriend, Wesley Jamain Cuyler in August, 2012. “The South Beach lifestyle of meth use kind of gripped Wesley and he could never let it go. I know that I failed him by not being able to be completely truthful with myself. I was his best friend. And as I sat at Wesley’s funeral surrounded by over 200 people paying homage to this wonderful person who died at 31 years old, I realized that I was never able to teach him to be his authentic self and rise to his potential because I wasn’t living as my authentic self.” We still live in a world where amateur and professional athletes do not routinely reveal their sexual orientation. “By me hiding and being in the closet, I was subconsciously giving Wesley permission to hide his drug use,” said Blair. “Once I started to open up and let some close friends and family know about my own homosexuality through Facebook and social media, people started to really support me. And from that I progressed to writing Hiding Inside the Baseline. “By doing the book, I am reaching out to not only young gay athletes, but also their parents, their families, their teachers, their friends, their coaches, their sponsors and their fans, and explain what we

go through by having to hide an essential part of our lives. This includes all the self-destructive things that we do to push down our growth, whether it is on the field or courts or in the classroom, by holding back and not being free to be ourselves. Many bad habits are created and nurtured—including alcohol and drug abuse—when we are not proud of who we are and accepted for who we are. “Anyone who is challenged by sexual orientation, I am speaking to you through this book. I am hoping that my story will help break down those barriers and help these people have more information, more knowledge, and more acceptance of what

it is like to be gay in 2014.” Blair’s message is clear. Those who remain in the closet will not be as happy, get as far in life, and realize their true potential, unless they start being honest with themselves. “The risk level now is less because business owners, companies, executives and power brokers are expressing their opinion on this subject one way or the other. Everyone now has the opportunity to seek out gay-friendly employers who have publically declared their support. “I’m not only empowering those gay who are hesitant to stand up and be honest with who they are, I’m also challenging those people who have failed to say that they welcome those who have the courage to stand-up. There is a big audience in America who are incapable of understanding this issue. This group, unfortunately, included my father. He never understood this, never broached the subject with me, he didn’t like what he thought he might know, and he died never being able to experience complete and unconditional love for his son. I feel bad for him, and I feel bad for me that I was unable to go to him and say that I am gay but the same son he always had. If only I had known then, what I know now.” Hiding Inside the Baseline will be launched at an invitation only book-signing at Dapur Restaurant on Monday, March 17th and is available for purchase at hidinginsidethebaseline.com and amazon.com.

Sharon Gless Releases Video in Support of Marriage Equality in Florida

floridaagenda.com

Sharon Gless has teamed up with Equality Florida to release a video in support of same-sex marriage in the Sunshine State. “I can’t imagine what my life would be like if someone told me I couldn’t marry

the person I love,” Gless states in the beginning of the video. “Yet that is what is going on in the state of Florida every day, when they tell thousands of men and women that they cannot have what we all want. To marry the one person that we love.” The Emmy and Golden Globe winner has owned a house in Florida for 20 years now, and has played a key role in Equality Florida’s “Get Engaged” campaign,

which started in 2013. “There are many celebrities who call Florida home, and we applaud Sharon Gless for publicly expressing her support for LGBT equality,” said Nadina Smith, CEO of Equality Florida, in a statement.

AGENDA EXCLUSIVE SEX OFFENDER BIAS CASE

February 26, 2014

16

F

ORT LAUDERDALE—Criminal and civil defense attorney Chris Mancini has agreed to defend local gay resident Sean Ford in a case that will pit the ordinances of the State of Florida and those of Broward County against those of the City of Fort Lauderdale. Ford, a convicted sex offender for a liaison with an underaged teenager 20 years ago, lives with his partner Dwayne Bunsie in Bunsie’s house in Fort Lauderdale and is in full compliance with the sex-offender registration law. Additionally, the couple registered as domestic partners under Broward County’s domestic partnership ordinance that acknowledges that they have a “significant personal, emotional, and economic relationship.” On May 22, 2013, Ford was notified by the Fort Lauderdale Police Department that he was violating local ordinance Section 16-127 of the Fort Lauderdale Code of Ordinances (SORR), and that he had to leave his partner’s home immediately. The Fort Lauderdale ordinance prohibits anyone who has ever been convicted of a sex offense against anyone under 16 years of age from establishing “a permanent residence or temporary residence within one thousand four hundred (1,400) feet of any school where the majority of the population attending are students less than 16 years of age; a designated public school bus stop; a child day care facility; or a park or playground.” Bunsie’s home is within 1,400 feet of a school bus stop. In contrast with Fort Lauderdale’s SORR is the State of Florida’s SORR, Section 775.215, Fla. Stats., enacted in 2004, which expressly applies only prospectively, that is, to persons whose predicate offenses were committed after its passage. Because Mr. Ford’s offense was committed twenty

SUNSHINE STATE

years ago, the State’s SORR does not apply to him. Additionally, unlike the Fort Lauderdale ordinance provisions, the State of Florida’s SORR is limited to housing within 1,000 feet of a school bus stop. In addition to the conflicting SORR ordinances, Mancini will argue that should the City of Fort Lauderdale ordinance take precedence over the State’s SORR ordinance as well as the stipulation of the Broward County domestic partnership agreement, Ford will be homeless, joining 150 other sex offenders on the streets, further punishing Ford in defiance of the Federal ex-post facto laws. The Federal ex post facto clause guarantees that the government can’t change the law to punish you more after you’ve committed a crime. The purpose of the guarantee is to let people know in advance the legal consequences of their acts, and to keep the government from acting vindictively towards unpopular groups. If the ultimate effect of Fort Lauderdale’s SORR is to drive Ford out of his partner’s home to live on the city’s streets, he will become homeless, since most Fort Lauderdale homeless shelters specifically exclude sex offenders. What little housing there is outside of the exclusionary zone is very expensive and out of Ford’s reach financially. According to Mancini’s argument, the only basis for evicting him is his twenty-year-old offense. Since the law didn’t permit this to happen to him at the time of Ford’s offense, Mancini will argue that Fort Lauderdale’s SORR violates the guarantee against ex post facto laws. The precident-setting hearing on the case will take place March 14, 2014 in front of Judge Mindy F. Solomon in the 17th Judicial Circuit court of Florida.

“We are at a tipping point in the movement for full equality, and the voices of allies like Sharon Glewss will make a huge difference.” Gless will be honored, along with the six couples who filed the lawsuit, at Equality Florida’s Annual Miami Gala at the Perez Art Museum on Sunday March 16. For more information on “Get Engaged,” visit getengaged.org.

Former Copa Owner Arrested Fort Lauderdale, FL — Gregg Evan Bernard, the one-time co-owner of the Copa, one of South Florida’s most popular dance clubs, was arrested on February 13th, for the alleged grand theft of $97,076.98 from the Marvilla Condominium Association. Wilton Manors Police Department Detective Bonnie Owens was the arresting officer. Bernard has since posted bond after being held at the Fort Lauderdale Main Jail. Judge Raag Singhai has been assigned the case for trial. Now a local realtor, Bernard is alleged to have used the stolen funds to pay his home mortgage at Chase Bank, storage fees to U-Store-It, his bill at Tamarac Dental Associates, membership in the Realtor Association of Greater Fort Lauderdale (RAGFL), as well as payments to truck part supplier TriState Enterprises, Florida Family Insurance, Macy’s Department Store and Char-Broil Services. Unconfirmed speculation is that Bernard allegedly had originally agreed to repay the money missing from the Marvilla Condo’s coffers and was arrested after he failed to do so. The Marvilla Condos are located at 2124 NE 5th Avenue in Wilton Manors. The withdrawals from the associations’ account were alleged to have taken place between February 3, 2010 and July 3, 2012. The Copa was destroyed during Hurricane Wilma in October 2005. During its heyday, the club hosted performances by Madonna, Grace Jones, Evelyn Champagne King, Sylvester, Two Tons of Fun, among others. It was located at the border of Fort Lauderdale and Dania.

Washington, D.C. – A gay man in Washington D.C. says that following a heart-attack, he sought out communion and last rites by a Catholic priest, where he was denied service based on his sexuality, according to the Washington Blade. The man, Ronald Plishka, told the Blade Rev. Brian Coelho offered to listen to his confession before giving him communion and anointing of the sick at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. When Plishka said that he was a fan of Pope Francis because of his stance on the LGBT community, Rev. Coelho changed his mind, opting to pray for Plishka instead. “We started talking and I told him I was so happy with this new pope because of his comments about the gays and his accepting the gays,” Plishka told the Blade. “And I mentined that I was gay. I said it and then I asked him, ‘Does that bother you?’ And he said, ‘Oh, no, that does not bother me.’ But then he would not proceed with administering the last rites or communion. He couldn’t do it.” Plishka reached out to the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington where he attended mass for ten years, reports The Washington Post. He said that the priest agreed with the Coelho. “He said, he can’t give you [communion] if you continue that lifestyle, if you’re an active participant,” Plishka told the Post. Rev. Hunry Huot of the inclusive Catholic group Diginity Washington told the Blade that the church recommends that priests provide communion and anointing to sick members of the church, regardless of the details. “Any baptized Christian ought not to be denied the sacraments at his or her request,” Huot told the Blade. “And that is a cardinal rule of pastoral care. So I don’t know what was going through the mind of this hospital chaplain to deny this man the sacraments. It violates this cardinal rule.”

New York, NY – Jason Collins made history after he was signed to the Brooklyn Nets, becoming the first openly-gay active player in the NBA. Collins, who came out last year, had not signed with a team following his departure from the Washington Wizards until now. Nets manager Billy King told NBA columnist Michael Scotta, “The decision to sign Jason was a basketball decision,” implying the decision had nothing to do with the player’s sexuality or public image. The professional athlete even got to play 11 minutes in a Nets game against the Lakers on Sunday since he was signed in time. Fellow gay professional athlete Michael Sam tweeted support to Collins. “Congratulations to my friend @jasoncollins34 – excited to see you do work out there,” Sam tweeted. Kobe Bryant was vocal on the historical moment as well, issuing the following statement to Yahoo Sports: “His impact is greater than what people think. You look at it from the context of having the first openly gay player. But they missed the domino effect that it has way beyond sports … It’s fantastic. It sets an incredible precedent.”

to make a decision on the bill. If she does not reach a decision, the bill will automatically pass, according to CNN. “I’m going to go home, and when I receive the bill, I’m going to read it and I’m going to be briefed on it,” Brewer told CNN. “We have been following it. And I will make my decision in the near future.” Brewer went on to say “...as always, I will do the right thing for the state of Arizona.” Though the Republican governor says she is “pro-business,” CNN reports that sources close to her say that she will likely veto the bill in order to focus on more pressing issues.

Michael Sam Meets the Press Indianapolis, IN – Aside from his New York Times interview, Michael Sam hasn’t had much contact with the press. The first openly-gay NFL prospect changed all of that when he came forward to chat through a press conference on Saturday.

Sam said that he would like to be known as “Michael Sam the football player, not Michael Sam the gay football player.” Though Sam told reporters that he wants to be judged solely on his football skills, a lot of the questions kept coming back to his sexuality. When one reporter asked about homophobic slurs, Sam was quick to respond. “I’ve been in locker rooms with all kinds of slurs being said,” he said. “I don’t think anyone means it. As time goes on, everyone will adapt.” When asked if the slurs would egg on a fight, Sam took the high road. “A fight?” Sam asked. “If somebody wants to call me a name, I’ll have a conversation with that guy and hopefully it will lead to nothing else.” Several reporters later praised Sam’s polished, honest personality, including Sports Illustrated’s Douglas Farrar. “Sam was as honest, poised and intelligent as you’d imagine,” Farrar wrote on the SI website. “He was an ideal representative to break new ground.”

Arizona Gov. to ‘Do the Right Thing’ with Anti-LGBT Bill

February 26, 2014 17

Washington, D.C. – While Arizona residents argue over an anti-LGBT bill in the works, Gov. Jan Brewer is working on coming to a decision on the matter. When speaking to CNN on Monday at the National Governors Association in D.C., she said she will review the bill before making any decisions. The bill, known as SB 1062, would allow business owners to refuse service to members of the LGBT community, and others, based on their religious beliefs. Brewer has until this weekend

fter weeks of sitting, Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni finally decided to sign the anti-gay bill into law that he’s been flip-flopping over. Back in December, the president was still unsure, but now that he believes homosexuality is a learned behavior, he’s ruled in favor of the bill. “Since nurture is the main cause of homosexuality, then society can do something about it to discourage the trends,” he said in a vague statement. “That is why I have agreed to sign the bill.” Last week, both President Obama and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry expressed deep concern over the signing of the bill. President Obama released a statement that he was “so deeply disappointed” in the country, and that the America’s future relationship with Uganda was now a bit muddled. He went on to say that signing the bill into law would be “a step backward for all Ugandans and reflect poorly on Uganda’s commitment to protecting the human rights of its people.” Now that it has been signed into law, Kerry has released an additional statement in which he stated that it was a “tragic day for Uganda and for all who care about the cause of human rights.” Just one day after the bill was passed, a Yoweri Museveni tabloid named Red Pepper was released with “Uganda’s 200 Top Homos Named.” In the paper, transgender males are called “confessed gay” women and continuously calls gay men LGBT activist, David Kato, was clubbed to death outside “bum-drillers.” While violating the law can earn you 5-7 of his home. years in prison, many anti-gay advocates have already taken I don’t believe in divine intervention, but I’m not exactly to the streets quite violently. NO BUTTS ABOUT IT: BEST GLUTE EXERCISES Q: I’d like to get a bubble butt. Can you recommend a good exercise to tighten my butt muscles? A: Absolutely! You are referring to your gluteus maximus, called glutes for short, which are a group of three muscles located at the back of each hip. While many guys give the so-called glamor muscles of the chest, back and arms almost all of their attention in the gym, the glutes deserve attention as they are actually the largest and strongest of the 639 named muscles in the body. They are extremely important, too, with responsibility for keeping the body upright and allowing us to counter gravity to climb stairs and hills. A toned, round bubblebutt is always an attentiongrabber! And the good news is the glutes usually respond quickly to resistance training. The best exercise to

tighten the glutes, handsdown, is the squat. This compound exercise (meaning it incorporates multiple joints and muscle groups) is largely considered one of the best exercises you can do – period. It works the glutes, quadriceps and hamstrings (front and back of your upper legs, respectively) as well as the calves and core. There are dozens of variations of the squat ranging from the Body-Weight Squat (great for beginners) all the way to Barbell Squats using heavy plates (advanced). Search YouTube for video demonstrations of other squat exercises and be sure to incorporate these into your workout program. To perform a basic BodyWeight Squat: 1) S tand with your feet shoulder width apart and your arms stretched in front of

you at shoulder level. Your back should be naturally arched. 2) P ush your hips back, bend at the knees and lower your body as low as you can. 3) P ause, then use your hips and knees to lift your body back to the starting position. Perform three sets. As you build confidence, try holding a set of dumbbells at your sides while squatting to add to the degree of difficulty.

1

Another great exercise to tighten the glutes is the lunge. Again, there are many variations of this terrific exercise. Use Google or YouTube for videos or contact me for a free demonstration. Hold a dumbbell in your left hand, at arm’s length next to your side. Stand with your right leg next to a sturdy object such as a power rack. Grab the power rack with your right hand, and allow your right arm to straighten so that you’re leaning to your left. Your body, arms, and legs will form a triangle with the rack. Your palm holding the dumbbell should face forward. Without changing the bend in your elbow, raise your left arm straight out to your side until it’s at shoulder level. Lower and repeat. Complete the prescribed number of repetitions with your left arm, then immediately do the same number with your right arm.

The big difference between store brand and organic ketchup has nothing to do with the amount of calories, sodium, or sugar in either – rather, it’s the amount of the cancer-fighting pigment called lycopene in the organic brands which acts as an antioxidant in the body. Organically-grown tomatoes have twice as much lycopene as regular tomatoes. Lycopene, which gives tomatoes (and other fruits and vegetables such as watermelon and apricots) their red color, is not produced by the body. It has been shown to reduce the risk of prostate cancer in men.

THURSDAY 2/27

What is Color, Anyways? Gay rights activist, African-American filmmaker, and poet Marlon Riggs made a name for himself in the late 1980s and early 1990s by creating provocative documentary films played on Public Broadcasting Television to controversy and acclaim. Black Is…Black Ain’t uses the metaphor of Riggs’ grandmother’s gumbo to explore the rich diversity of Black identities. The film highlights the rigidity of the Black institutions of family, church, and community. Stonewall Museum screens the film as part of their Black History Month celebration. 7 p.m. Stonewall Museum and ArtServe Auditorium. 1300 E

FRIDAY 2/28

Pride Comedy Night “I’ll take Bruce Vlanch for the block” is one of America’s favorite lines. Okay, that might be stretching it, but Bruce Vlanch really is one of the most sought after comedic writers in Hollywood. Not only did he write and perform on many seasons of Whoopi Goldberg’s Hollywood Squares, but he also was the comedy writer for Oscar hosts Billy Crystal, Alex Baldwin, Steve Martin and many others. A documentary a few years ago entitled ‘Get Bruce’ played the gay and lesbian film festival circuit and was underrated to say the least. Judy Gold has won multiple Emmys and is considered one of the greatest comediennes

Using such basketball antics as “twirling ball on finger” and “through the legs ball bouncing”, the Harlem Globetrotters barely lose a game. In their free time, The Globetrotters have been known to help such famed sleuths as Scooby Doo solve mysterious crimes or play pick-up games with a bunch of robots while being coached by Gilligan and The Professor. In a year of such massive achievements in GLBTQ equality, it only makes sense that Fort Lauderdale’s annual Pride festival at Holiday Park would have a grand line-up, far exceeding the talent of year’s past. Pride has gone all out in 2014, with four stellar headliners: Judy Tenuta, Tiffany, Sheena Easton, and Lisa Lisa. Pride South Florida—a non-profit organization that provides the community with various functions through the year—holds this early pride celebration at a time when many Northerners are ready to come visit. Along with the notable 80s songstresses, Pride South Florida will also include famed hypnotist Jon Simon, the ladies of Lips, the Gay Man’s Chorus, and a host of exhibitors promoting local businesses and organizations. This year’s Pride promises to be one of the greatest celebrations Fort Lauderdale has ever seen. 12 p.m. Holiday Park/War Memorial Auditorium. 800 NE 8th St, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.

Mardi Gras Casino plays up the Mardi Gras festivities with a maniacal party beginning at 9am. Stilt-walkers, live bands, fire jugglers, magicians, and nonstop entertainment complete the holiday for which the casino is named. Participants can also enjoy the many different gambling opportunities at the casino and, by throwing your money away, understand truly what it feels like to party hard. 9 a.m. Mardi Gras Casino. 831 N Federal Hwy, Hallandale Beach, 33009.

STILL SPARKLING Tiffany Talks Pop, Broadway and Pride

B

28

Florida Agenda: As one of the reigning pop teen queens of the 1980s, and a music industry survivor, what do you think of the evolution of the genre, personified by Britney, Christina, Lindsay and, more recently, Miley? Tiffany: Back when I was performing, there was so much you couldn’t do. It was hard to make that transition from young teenager to full adult without everybody panicking. I think we’ve gotten better but I don’t think we’ll ever really gotten over the hump of, “I just have to do it.” Unfortunately I think there is a shock factor. Taylor Swift has probably done it a little bit better as far as keeping that innocence a little

up, but I find it really hard to watch. (On the other hand) I love the mentoring on The Voice. I love watching these other artists because they’ve lived it, they have a lot to say. I don’t think you really get into that world too much where you see people mentor others, not treating people as competitors, but giving honest advice and nurturing talent. I love that about that show.

BY GREGG SHAPIRO efore Britney and Christina, before Lindsay and Miley, even before Taylor Swift, there was Tiffany. Just one name; like Cher or Madonna. Going where few performers would dare to go, Tiffany headed to the mall, a venue bursting with her contemporaries. She performed bubblegum pop concerts, featuring remakes of classic tunes such as “I Think We’re Alone Now” and “I Saw Him Standing There,” to capacity crowds, earning herself a place in the pantheon of ‘80s pop superstars. But kids, both performers and fans, eventually grow up. Tiffany has continued to record throughout the `80s, `90s and 21st century. She even found time to start a family. Also known for being a loud and proud supporter of the LGBT community, Tiffany has regularly performed at Pride fests over the years. I spoke with Tiffany about her career, past and present, in preparation for her Pride Fort Lauderdale performance on Sat. March 1 .

bit. Maybe it’s just totally in the pop culture. I’m a big fan of the people you mentioned. I’m pro-artist. We’re very eccentric and we have to have our little niche cut out to we have to be different. Today, especially in pop, there is that shock factor; the videos and the way they dress and all of that. But I think they’re doing it very well [laughs]. As long as it’s just your art and not your entire life. It still scares me when I see people partying too hard and being around the wrong influences and the possibility of getting into something that would take you away from what you are meant to do. That makes me sad. I don’t think it’s just an age thing. It’s something that’s an industry thing. You can fall into those potholes very easily because everything is excessive. Another phenomenon in which you participated is the TV talent, as in the case of

your 1985 appearance on Star Search. What do you think about the current crop of programs, such as American Idol and The Voice? I’m a big fan of The Voice. American Idol kind of lost me, especially the auditions. My son loved American Idol and he got a kick out of watching people being crapped on technically. As an artist and someone who knows how sensitive (singers can be) and that’s your dream… not everybody is meant to be on stage. Not everybody is meant to have a record deal. But I try not to kibosh their dreams entirely. With shows such as American Idol you’re going to have to have a tough skin. If you want to get into the music industry you’re going to have be able to take the yeses and the nos and the praise and the rejections. That’s really what it is. But that hasn’t stopped people from signing

American Idol champ Carrie Underwood recently played Maria in a recent TV remounting of The Sound of Music. Is there a Broadway musical in which you would like to star either onstage or in a TV version? There are definitely some things I would love to do. That’s part of my bucket list. Doing some Broadway stuff is definitely something I would like to tap into. A musical about my life has been suggested, including my songs and my story. I’m very interested in listening to what that is about. That’s kind of in the works now. We’ll see how that goes. In that musical, would you be playing you or would someone else to playing you? I hope at the end I’d be playing me. That’s the fun of it all. I don’t know if I could play me at 14 [laughs]. You have become a veteran of reality TV, most recently competing on and making it to the final four on Food Network’s Rachael vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off. What was that experience like for you? It was awesome and manic and stressful. I wanted to do my best. I love to cook and I’m a big fan of Rachael and Guy. And I was playing from my charity. It’s a trip to have

RECIPE PILAU

/floridaagenda

BY CHEF JEAN DOHERTY

P

ilau became standard fare in the Middle East over the years with variations and innovation by the Arabs, Turks and Armenians. In Italian cuisine “pilaf” is a rice pre-cooking style that allows chefs in busy restaurants to cut down time in risotto preparation. Usually a large tray of rice will be boiled for 7 minutes with a large onion and a carrot, in water. Once cooled it will be kept in the fridge and used ad hoc to prepare risotti in a shorter time: 7 to 10 minutes depending on the “al dente” texture that the chef wants to achieve, rather than the usual 16 to 20 minutes. In Greek cuisine, piláfi is the fluffy and soft, but neither soupy nor sticky, rice that has been boiled in a meat stock or bouillon broth. In Northern Greece it is considered poor form to prepare piláfi on a stovetop; the pot is properly placed in the oven.

• 1lb basmati rice or long grain rice • 1 onion, finely chopped • 1 bouquet garni • About 5 oz of butter • 10 oz of veal stock or “demi glace” • salt and white pepper

31

Although born in Dublin, Ireland, Chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.

February 26, 2014

Turn on the oven to a temperature of 360° In a small ovenproof saucepan, melt approximately 2 oz of butter and gently cook the onions and the bouquet garni, without letting them brown. Add the rice. When the rice becomes transparent, pour in the veal stock. Bring everything to a boil and season it (be careful not to use to much salt ) Cover with some waxed paper and with the saucepan’s lid. Cook in the oven for 17 min. Once you have removed the rice from the oven, leave it covered for another 15 min. Remove the bouquet garni and separate the grains of rice with a good knob of butter, using a fork. Of course, those of you who can afford it can also add some truffles, cut into thin strips and several slices of foie gras. This will take you to unexpected culinary heights. You are the chef.

I think you answered that question when you would break into song on Rachael Vs. Guy. Do you have any fond memories from the past that you’d like to share with readers? I met Michael Jackson at the Forum. I had just knocked his album out of number one (on the charts). When I heard he was in concert I wanted to go. We got to go backstage and I thought, “Oh, I don’t know how this is going to go down.” He wanted to have a conversation with me. He was so polite and so wonderful. He just wanted to get to know me. We took a picture, which I will always cherish. Tiffany performs on Sat. March 1 at Holiday Park as part of Pride Fort Lauderdale, sponsored by Pride South Florida. You live in Nashville and your latest CD is a country record. What can you tell me about it? That’s my roots. (Most) people

What else makes “The Rose Tattoo” special? It definitely shows my songwriting capabilities. Nashville is big in country music but it’s not exclusive to country. I also want to move on to other projects such as my singersongwriter album which is mostly a ballad album. Hopefully it will answer the question that people have, “Can she really sing?” [Laughs] Hopefully this album will prove that.

February 26, 2014

As I mentioned, you will be performing at Pride Fort Lauderdale. When did you first become aware of a gay following for your career? There have been a few different times. Maybe when I was 18 -through my makeup artist. I learned a lot from him, from hair and makeup to how to be a person in the public eye. It was a gay man who taught me you can still be nice to have to bring it up a notch. I came from a modest household. I wasn’t raised with celebrities. My manager would have died if he heard that advice [laughs]. But he was right. When you’re in the public eye, especially as a woman, hopefully you don’t become a super diva. But there’s a fine line and hopefully you are your best and a notch above.

One of your fellow competitors, Judy Gold, will also be performing at Pride Fort Lauderdale. Do you have any funny stories you’d like to share about Judy from her time on Rachael vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off? First of all, she’s just lovely. She’s always on, from the minute she wakes up to the time she goes to bed, you just can tell. I love her jokes, I love her sarcasm. I’d love to go see her show. I’m looking forward to seeing her again. It’s weird, because once you work with someone, it opens that door. She’s someone I’m excited about having that relationship with.

don’t know I started in country music. I came to Nashville and I was 10 years old to get a record contract. I wanted to do something as a thank you to all the people who’ve been listening to me, embraced my talent and help me develop it. The one thing I learned from country music that I will always cherish is that you’re never bigger than your fans. They are your lifeline and I love that. I learned to work with people and to hear people. That’s how the mall tour came about. That made sense to me. I’m a shopaholic first of all [laughs]. But it also made sense because it was about people and getting to know people. I love my fans and I love meeting new people. I’m here for them and whatever the event is; this is my life.

the cameras in your face. You’re working in the kitchen that you don’t really know and things are missing. There’s a whole back story to reality TV. It’s TV, at the end of the day. But for me, the hardest thing was getting used to that clock. I was constantly running out of time. I felt like I should’ve done better. You’re out of your element and you’re wondering what it is they got on tape. When it doesn’t go well, you’re like, “I need a glass of wine” [laughs.

TRAVEL

MARCH TRAVEL Holi Days BY RICK KARLIN

February 26, 2014

38

M

arch, the saying goes, comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. That may be true for some parts of the world, but in the Northern U.S. it comes in like a lion and goes out like a lion. The real place to enjoy March is in Southeast Asia. It is the magic time before the monsoons and stifling heat, making it a lovely time to visit India. If you haven’t visited India before, the best place to start is Mumbai (or for old school folks, Bombay), the capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra. With about 13 million inhabitants, it is the commercial capital of India, and a global financial platform. It also includes the Bollywood film studios and television schools. Its standard of living is higher than in most other regions of India and most of the residents speak English. Of course, you’ll also want to tour the markets and enjoy the festival of smells and colors, and the animated vendors and shoppers. Taxis and rickshaws are plentiful and an effective means of getting around the city. Time your visit to take in Holi, a celebration of the end of winter and beginning of spring, celebrated for three days coinciding with a third full moon of the year (this year beginning on Monday, March 17.) On the eve of the final day, bonfires are lit at major crossroads in towns and cities and effigies of the demon Holika are burned to symbolize the triumph of good over evil. Most of the raucous fun is on the final day, with the Festival of Colors. On Holi’s final day, children and adults take to the streets throwing colorful powder on each other. Dyed water is shot from syringes, thrown from buckets and poured into balloons, which are then tossed at people. It’s sanctioned anarchy and, as a visitor, you’ll be a particular target, so expect to finish the day looking like a walking rainbow. Wear something you don’t mind tossing away. Mumbai isn’t the only place in Southeast Asia to celebrate Holi, of course. A number of cities and towns around India offer celebrations as well. While India is large, a railway network covers the length and breadth of the country, with more than

People covered in paint on Holi Festival. The festival of colors, marking the arrival of spring, is one of the biggest festivals in India

7,000 stations over a total route length of more than 40,000 miles. Air transportation is also an option, and a must if you plan to attend celebrations in disparate cities. Consult a travel agent for assistance in planning trips to multiple locations. Just outside of Delhi you can experience a modern version of Holi, complete with a music festival. “Holi Cow” is the biggest and oldest Holi modern music festival in India. In addition to the music, you can experience a variety of food from vendors, shopping and, of course, be prepared to be covered in color. It’s almost an Indian version of Burning Man, with a nice mix of locals, tourists and expats and is safer for single women. Check out the event’s Facebook page for more information at facebook.com/holicowfestival. The women of Barsana village near Mathura in Uttar Pradesh rule the roost during Holi. They jokingly beat up men from neighboring Nandgaon village with sticks, in what’s known as Lathmar Holi. This celebration takes place around a week before the main day of Holi (this year on March 10). The following day, the celebrations move to Nandgaon village. Plan on arriving in Barsana a couple

of days in advance of Lathmar Holi so that you can also enjoy the Laddoo Holi festivities. Sweets are thrown around and spiritual songs related to Radha and Krishna are sung, making it an unforgettable experience. In Shantiniketan, in West Bengal, Holi is observed with “Vasanta Utsav” (Spring Festival). It was started by Nobel Bengali poet Laureate Rabindranath Tagore at Vishva Bharati University. Students dress up in spring colors and put on a huge cultural program for visitors, including dances to Tagore’s songs. Purulia, in West Bengal, begins a few days early with a three day folk festival. The festival includes Chau dance, Darbari Jhumur, Natua dance, and songs of West Bengal by wandering Baul musicians. The festival is organized by Purulia’s villagers as a way of helping sustain themselves. The location is around 5-6 hours by train from Kolkata (Calcutta.) Accommodation is provided in tents and there are portable toilets as well. In Jaipur, an elephant festival on Holi Eve kicks off the celebrations. Elephant parades, elephant beauty contests, folk dances, and a tug-of-war between

elephants, locals and foreigners are all regular events. The Jaipur Elephant Festival is held at Jaipur’s Chaugan Stadium, right in the middle of the Old City of Jaipur. Entrance is usually free. A one week hotel stay in Mumbai, at a four star hotel, can run as little as $250. Round-trip air fare is about $1,200 for economy. You can easily find package deals for a two-week stay during Holi at a fourstar or better hotel with round-trip airfare to Dehli on Expedia for as little as $1,700, a few hundred more for Mumbai and around $2,400 for Jaipur. If you prefer a guided tour of Holi events, Viator offers a two-day package which starts in Dehli, picking you up at your hotel with a private guide to Mathura and Vrindavan to join in Holi celebrations, a visit to Banke Bihari Temple, Hindu folk theater and a dinner of Indian specialties. Hotel pickup and drop-off in private, air-conditioned vehicles with an English-speaking guide, overnight accommodation in a three-star hotel, some meals and entrance fees, as well as a package of dye are included. Go to lonelyplanet. com and search “holi” for more on guided tours of Holi.
