Wilton Manors, FL – On Thursday, Mixed Martial Arts fighter Jessica Aguilar will be in town for a meet and greet and to discuss her involvement in the lesbian, bisexual and transgender health directory, LBTHealth.org. “Everyone deserves to have quality health care,” Aguilar said in a recent press release. “We hope the directory opens doors for women in the LBT community who would otherwise not have sought out medical or mental health treatment in fear of shame or being misunderstood.” LGBTHealth.org is a free health directory with over 300 health care practitioners in Broward, Dade and Palm Beach counties. The goal is for LBT women to find healthcare locally without having to worry about social stigmas or prejudices. The project is being spearheaded by The Pride Center, Aqua Foundation for Women, Women in Network, SunServe, BLAST and others. “The directory is a vital need within the LBT women’s community,” said Denise Spivak, President of Women in Network in a recent press release.
“LBT women so often do not seek out medical care, for reasons that include discrimination, lack of understanding and lack of insurance. Having a resource that says to the community ‘these medical professionals understand and will treat you with care and respect’
ness as the main reason for his new political philosophy. The fundraiser begins at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19. The suggested donation is $100, or $25 for anyone under 30. To RSVP, e-mail dean@trantalis.com or call 954-566-2226.
Charlie Crist Fundraiser Receives Support from LGBT Community
New Moon Closes its Doors
Wilton Manors, FL – On March 19, a fundraiser will be held for Charlie Crist’s race for governor, and this time, it looks like he will be getting some major support from the LGBT community. Set to take place at the home of Fort Lauderdale’s own Dean Trantalis, the first openly-gay commissioner in the city. The fundraiser is the first of its kind, in the sense that Crist has never really received any support from the gay community before. Crist recently switched to Democrat, and just last year he told Watermark that he apologized for his previous stance against gay marriage, citing fair-
Wilton Manors, FL – A valued business in the LGBT closed down this week the well-known lesbian-oriented bar New Moon. Over the weekend, the bar was packed from wall to wall with patrons. The bar became the stomping ground for a number of lesbians around the tricounty area. “We’re really sad to see it go,” a patron told us over the weekend. “It’s our go-to bar when we decide to get out of the house. We’re really going to miss it.” Patrons won’t have to worry too much though, as there will be a new party at Rumors on Thursdays that will cater to the lesbian crowd: Ladies game night with two-for-one drinks and 15% off your food bill (ladies only). The new lady’s party at Rumors started on Sunday when New Moon closed its doors for the last time.

after marrying his longtime partner, Mark Zmuda is filing a lawsuit for wrongful-termination. Zmuda’s lawyers filed the suit against former employer Eastside Catholic School last week, according to The Seattle Times. “As a result of [Eastside Catholic’s] deceptive act or practice, Mr. Zmuda married his husband with a reasonable expectation that he would continue to be employed by ECS,” the lawsuit reads. Zmuda married his partner last summer, but when the staff found out about it months later, he was let go. When Zmuda was fired in December, the school said that he was fired for violating church doctrine which he agreed to upon being hired. The school said it plans to file a motion to dismiss the lawsuit, defending its First Amendment right to make decisions on matters of faith.

Trans-Inclusive Student Policy Adopted in New York

New York, NY – The New York City Department of Education announced new guidelines on Monday, including some that were designed to protect transgender students. Guideline additions ask schools to use a student’s chosen name (and pronouns)
March 12, 2014
New York, NY – Cardinal Timothy Dolan, leader of the Catholic Church in New York, had nothing but praises for openly-gay NFL hopeful Michael Smith during his interview on NBC’s Meet the Press this past week. “Good for him,” Dolan said after being asked about Sam’s recent coming out. “I would have no sense of judgement on him. The same Bible that... teaches us well about the virtues of chastity and fidelity and marriage also tells us not to judge people. So I would say, bravo.” Just last year, Dolan voiced similar thoughts on the matter. During an interview last year with Meet the Press, he voiced his opinion on the public relations issues the church faces. “I think maybe we’ve been outmarketed sometimes,” he said. “We’ve been caricatured as being antigay.” But in March last year, Dolan had some strong words for ABC’s George Stephanapoulos on This Week. “You’re entitled to friendship,” he said regarding same-sex couples. “But we also know that God has told us that the way to happiness, that – especially when it comes to sexual love – that is intended only for a man and woman in marriage, where children can come about naturally.”
Conservative Activist Gay Vice Principal Files Says Marriage Equality for Wrongful-Termination Seattle, WA – Forced out of his school Is an ‘Extra Right’
Instead, Carson labels marriage equality as an “extra right,” according to Right Wing Watch. Carson made the statement over the weekend at the Conservative Political Action Conference, an annual gathering for like-minded right-wingers. “Of course gay people should have the same rights as everyone else,” Carson said. “But they don’t get extra rights, they don’t get to redefine marriage.” Last year, Carson made a similar scandalous comment, comparing same-sex marriage to bestiality. He said that no one should be allowed to redefine marriage, “be they gays, be they NAMBLA, be they people who believe in bestiality.” Carson touched on his bestiality comment over the weekend, defending his statement and denying any comparison between the two. “Of course they’re not the same thing,” Carson said. “Anybody who believes that is a dummy, but anybody who believes somebody who says that somebody said that is a dummy, that’s the problem.”

as often as possible. The policy covers student IDs as well. The only exception to the rule is an official school document such as a transcript. The policy also goes on to ask that schools allow students to use bathrooms and other facilities that match their gender identity. The guidelines have been met with skepticism, as the new policy doesn’t require schools to do some of the things outlines, but rather suggests that they should. The policy states that each situation should be handled on a case-by-case basis, and notes that any legal changes to official forms must meet the requirement of the state; some form of genital surgery, which in New York, is generally not available to anyone under the age of 18.

os Gatos, CA – Though Chloie Jonsson transitioned over eight years ago, she is still being treated like a man in a recent scuffle with the fitness mogul CrossFit. When Jonsson decided to join the women’s division of CrossFit, she was told she has to instead participate in the male side instead. Months after Jonsson sent the letter to the fitness giants, a response was issued by Dale Saran, CrossFit’s General Counsel. In the letter, Saran made several strange claims, both legal and medical. He said that since Jonsson was born as a male, with both X and Y chromosomes, and therefore, she is male and must train with males. When mentioning Jonsson, he says that her lawyer’s claims that she is legally and physically a female, are wrong. If this is true, I’m sure Saran is testing each and every athlete involved in the massive fitness program, both transgender and nontrans (or cis). “This is simply wrong as a matter of human biology and if you can’t see that, there really isn’t much to talk about,” Saran writes in the letter. “Chloe was born, genetically – as a
matter of fact – with an X and a Y chromosome and all the anatomy of a male of the human race. Today, notwithstanding any hormone therapy or surgeries, Chloie still has an X and Y chromosome. Thus, you’re [sic] statement is categorically, empirically, false.” According to a study (transathletes.org/skeletal), transgender women who have been on hormone replacement therapy for a number of years have no physical advantage against cisgender women. As time goes on, hormone therapy depletes muscle and actually makes bone density and soft tissue equivalent to that of a regular woman. If anything, transgender fighters are at a disadvantage against other women due to their lack of testosterone. After hormone therapy, trans individuals no longer produce testosterone, whereas cisgender women continue to produce the hormone via ovaries. It’s probably important to know that testosterone boosts bone density and aids in muscle development. At 5’4”, Jonsson is now suing the company and I couldn’t be happier. Last year’s female winner of the CrossFit Games was Samantha Briggs, who by the way, is taller than Jonsson.

LOW-INCOME HOUSING FOR LGBT SENIORS ON THE RISE

ilton Manors, FL – John C. Anderson is a new apartment complex that was designed specifically for low-income LGBT seniors, reports CBS Philly. It opened just a few weeks ago, and is the first of its kind for Philadelphia. In the whole country, there are only two others like it. “Being an LGBT friendly community, the largest development of its kind in the United States of America clearly shows Philadelphia is leading the way on human rights and LGBT rights issues,” said Mayor Michael Nutter. The development, spearheaded by LGBT activist Mark Segal, reportedly cost $19.5 million. There’s already a waiting list for the complex, which features 56 one bedroom units that cater to LGBT seniors. “If we don’t take care of our LGBT seniors, we’re not taking care of our community,” said Segal,” and that’s what real community is about.” Segal says the model should be national, and what better place for senior housing than the Sunshine State? “There is a group who is looking into LGBT low-income senior housing in Wilton Manors,” says Krishan Manners, President/CEO of Wilton Manors Development Alliance, which oversees a number of projects in Wilton Manors as well a new business ventures. “I can’t speak details yet because it’s all very preliminary. However, developers are recognizing the need and the market for this type of development.” According to the Census, Florida has the greatest proportion of people who are 65 and older, with 17.3 percent of the state’s total population; That means roughly 3,283,890 people. While we don’t have an exact statistic for LGBT seniors in Florida, we can assume that there is a decent amount in that 3 million. “To my knowledge, the City of Wilton Manors has no plans for a public/private partnership regarding subsidized LGBT senior housing at this time,” Manners told us. “While I can’t speak for our City Commissioners, I cannot imagine them not supporting a project of this nature as long as it’s deemed beneficial to the community.”

Making Porn
SunServe’s Housing Case Management Department is walking in the AIDS Walk and needs your help. No, you don’t have to walk with them, but you can spend 20 bucks and enjoy free food and entertainment down at Wilton Manors’ new favorite bar The Drive. From 6-8pm come enjoy a night out with friends while contributing to a cause you’re too lazy to participate in. The Drive’s disco lounge vibe contributes to its status as Wilton Manor’s hip new venue. A full bar and reasonably priced menu will help make this event a fun charitable experience. 6 p.m. The Drive. 2390 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.
The gay pornographic film industry is fertile ground for any dramatic work and Empire Stage tills that ground with their current production. In Ronnie Larsen’s cult play Making Porn, the lives of six people involved in the gay pornographic industry in San Francisco in the early 1980’s collide. Jack Hawk, a straight, out-of-work actor is hired by gay porn producer, Arthur Mack, to star in his newest porn movie Cops. The cast of supporting characters include Ray Tanner, a jaded porn star of the 70’s, newcomer Ricky, and Jamie—Arthur’s long time boyfriend and assistant who falls in love with one of the actors. The play contains nudity, which doubles as a warning and a marketing campaign. 8 p.m.
Empire Stage. 1140 N. Flagler Dr, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.
Menopause the Musical! If the porn industry isn’t your cup of tea, what about a whole musical revolving around an important, albeit difficult time in an aging woman’s life? Menopause The Musical is about four women who reminisce about their dilemma while shopping for lingerie at a Bloomingdale’s sale. They sing 25 songs about chocolate cravings, hot flashes, loss of memory, nocturnal sweats, and sexual problems. The music parodies include “Stayin’ Awake” and “Puff, My God I’m Draggin’.” With such catchy titles and such a hysterical plotline, what more could you ask for? 8 p.m. Parker Playhouse. 707 NE 8th St, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.

Grammy nominated and platinum-selling Atlanta rapper 2Chainz has been on a roll since his rap-R&B-pop crossover hit “Duffle Bag Boy” back in ’07. In 2010 he surprised the radio with the smash hit “Boo.” 2 Chainz’s buzz has reached fever pitch with such notable rappers as Busta Rhymes, Young Jeezy, and Pusha T all helping him on his musical “campaign.” Tonight he’ll bring the braggadocio and the rhymes.

Tyler the Creator Tyler, the Creator’s 2013 album Wolf was one of the biggest albums last year. The alternative hip-hop crew Odd Future’s main rapper, producer, and source of inspiration got his name from a Los Angeles Times article about him when he was a 16-year-old skateboarding enthusiast. His bizarre and filthy material earned him a legion of followers back in 2010 when his video “French” took off, earning over a million views. His first album in 2011, Goblin, solidified his status as one of the hot young talents on the scene. Though his sharp tongue has been subject of many articles, the rapper defends his occasionally antigay slurs, citing his close friendship with openly-gay R&B singer Frank Ocean as proof, who was at one time a member of Tyler’s rap supergroup, Oddfuture. 8:30 p.m. Revolution Live. 100 SW 3rd Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33312.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR GYM TIME ISN’T PAYING OFF Q: I’m 35, 5’10”, 195 and have been working out for over a year at the gym on my own (three times a week doing the machines and cardio). The problem is nothing is happening. What is the problem? – Rob A: The sad reality is that over 90 percent of gym goers fail to achieve their goal—even after a full year of consistently exercising. Spending time at the gym a few times a week may make you feel better psychologically, but unless you are working out correctly and putting in the effort, you won’t be any better off physically. I am often amazed when I visit commercial gyms at the number of people using equipment incorrectly (potentially injuring themselves), just standing around chatting as if they were at some social event, or using weights that are too light to help them
progress in any meaningful way. Here’s the simple truth: The effort you put in to any exercise program is tied directly to the result you get from it. If you’re not getting results, you probably need to dial up your intensity. The first step is knowing what you want to accomplish. Do you want to lose weight? Bulk up? Build muscle? The approach to achieving each of these is very different. If what you are trying to do is build muscle, you should adopt the use of free weights and cables (rather than machines) as your primary tools. Next, you must go heavy (5 to 12 reps maximum) and allow yourself a minute or so between sets. Use a trainer or have a buddy spot you so you can truly push yourself. The weight must be challenging but not to the extent that you can’t

TIP OF THE WEEK: AN APPLE A DAY… There’s truth behind the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” The red apple is an amazing fruit with numerous health benefits. It’s rich in inflammation-fighting antioxidants, dietary fiber and amino acids and contains no saturated fats or cholesterol. Low in calories (a medium –sized apple is about 90 calories), apples contain quercetin which scientists say plays a role in staving off illnesses ranging from allergies to heart attacks and prostate and lung cancers.
perform the exercise correctly. Good form and safety are paramount. If, at the end of your workout, you don’t feel used up and totally exhausted, it’s probably time to dial up the intensity. Increase your workouts from twice weekly to at least three – preferably four – times per week. Plan your workouts in advance and track your progress. Make compound (multijoint) exercises the foundation of your workouts. These include exercises like the Bench Press, Barbell Squat, Deadlift, Seated Row and Lat Pulldown. Pair opposing
muscle groups together (for example, chest and back, quads and hamstrings) and strive to work each group no more than twice per week. Be cautious about overtraining; give yourself at least 48 hours before working the same muscle group. Rather than obsessing over muscle gains, take pride in achieving increases in strength by progressively lifting heavier weight. Trust me, the muscle will come with time – and patience. Not least importantly, your nutrition and supplementation are critical to your muscle gains. Talk to
a certified personal trainer or nutritionist about your diet. Download my free e-book, “The BodyBlast Method” at www.PushFitnessFTL.com for more great information on burning fat and getting fit. MAKING MAKING PORN David R. Gordon of Empire Stage Chats About His Newest Production
M
BY GREGG SHAPIRO
March 12, 2014

Florida Agenda: David, you divide your time between NYC and Fort Lauderdale. How does that work out? David R. Gordon: The most difficult part about dividing my time between New York and Florida is probably being away from my wife and my dog for extended periods of time. The other difficult part about it is the housing situation, because I don’t own my own place down here. What was the impetus for founding Empire Stage in Fort Lauderdale? It all started back in the ‘90s and 2000’s. I was working in New York with a husband and wife team, Kevin Thompson and Garet Scott. She was a playwright and he was a director. Actually, now what they do
As one might expect, Making Porn “contains male nudity” as the poster and program state. What’s it like for you to appear naked onstage? Like most things in life, it is something that you get used to the more you do it. I remember back in 1996 when I was first doing Making Porn, I was so nervous about knowing my lines that the nudity wasn’t even a concern.

aking Porn, Ronnie Larsen’s popular stage comedy set in the gay porn industry in San Francisco during the 1980s, has been playing to packed houses at Empire Stage, 1140 N. Flagler, in Fort Lauderdale. The production is so successful that it has been extended until March 23, 2014. The story of three porn-stars – the seasoned Ray (Empire Stage Executive Director David R. Gordon), the enthusiastic Ricky (Ryan Mahannah) and the reluctant (and straight) Jack (Craig Moody) – as well as the men behind the scenes (director Keith Dougherty as Arthur and Larry Buzzeo as Jaime), Making Porn is alternately hilarious and hot (especially when Jack is in various states of undress). As it turns out, some of the best comedy occurs when the sole female character, Jack’s seemingly naïve wife Linda (Jennifer Zabalo) appears onstage. Her transformation alone is worth the price of admission.

is produce audio books. Back then they were producing theater in New York; very funny comedies. She was writing plays and I was playing the lead in most of her plays that she wrote. Some of the shows were Bongo Fever, A Town Called Shame, Down Down Down 30 Seconds to Hell, and they were a lot of fun. We got to know each other very well. She wrote a play called Roll With The Punches which was produced twice in New York. I I suggested we take the show to Fort Lauderdale. I’d find a theater, we’ll bring the cast down and have a good time for a couple weeks there. We ended up producing the play back in 2009 at the old Rising Action Theater on Oakland Park Boulevard. How long have you been an actor and what are some of the favorite roles you have played? I have been an actor for roughly 25 years. I have done lots of theater, lots of TV commercials, some soap operas and even some film. Some of my favorite roles include, Judd in
Oklahoma, Frank in Body Awareness, Chance Cox in Bongo Fever, and I am also really enjoying playing the role of Ray Tanner in Making Porn. I’m glad you mentioned Making Porn, a play in which you have performed in the past, and in which you presently appear. Please say something about the play, your connection to it and why you have remounted it, so to speak. Making Porn is a play that I have performed in many times over the past 20 years. When I originally got involved with Making Porn I was playing the role of Jack Hawk, now I am playing the role of Ray Tanner. Making Porn is the first play that I chose to produce at Empire Stage four years ago. It was actually five years ago that I purchased the rights to Making Porn for the entire South Florida area from the playwright Ronnie Larsen for a term of 5 years. This term is up in April of this year. This is the reason why I decided to remount the play.
Is it difficult to find actors who are willing to appear naked onstage? It is not difficult to find actors who are willing to appear naked on stage, but it is difficult to find good actors who are willing to appear naked on stage. The play also features simulations of gay sex, something that, depending on the part, can be an aspect of an actor’s job. In a show such as Making Porn, do you think it matters if the actors are gay or straight? I don’t think it matters at all whether an actor is gay or straight as long as the actor is believable in his role. I am a straight married man, but I am also an actor. So, sometimes I choose to play roles and portray people on stage who are very different from who I am in real life, such as Ray Tanner in Making Porn. The trick is to make the audience believe that you are actually that person who you are portraying on stage. As long as you are able to do that it doesn’t really matter who you are in real life. Making Porn is, first and foremost, a comedy. But it also takes a serious turn, due to the time period in which it is set (the mid-1980s), and

Have you started thinking about what the next Empire Stage production will be? I am fortunate enough over the past few years to have become friends with performer and playwright Jamie Morris. Jamie is the writer of plays such as Mommie Queerest, The Facts Of Life: The Lost Episode, and The Silence Of The Clams. All three of these hilarious plays have been produced by Empire stage over the past three years. I am happy to announce that our next Empire Stage production will be Jamie’s latest masterpiece, Redesigning Women, this summer.

Making Porn has been playing to sold-out houses and has been extended through March 23. What does that mean to you? Making Porn has been playing to sold-out houses for four weeks now. I am very grateful for the support that this production has received from the
local community. One thing that it tells me is that there is still, and probably always will be, a market for this type of show.

deals with the subject of AIDS. With HBO’s production of “The Normal Heart” set to premiere this spring, how effective do you think theater and film and other mediums are at remind audiences that the AIDS crisis is far from over? I don’t know much about HBO’s “The Normal Heart.” But one thing I do know is that it seems that society doesn’t really take the AIDS crisis as seriously as it did back in the 1980s and 1990s. You would almost think that AIDS has been cured, but as we all know it has not and should still be taken very seriously.

variation on shepherd’s pie, this hearty dish brings together saucy beef and mashed potatoes, parsnips and other vegetables. It’s always absolutely fabulous for our March 17 celebrations.
• 2 medium Yukon Gold potatoes, • 2 small parsnips • 3/4 pound lean ground beef • 1 medium onion, chopped • 2 cups finely shredded cabbage • 2 medium carrots, halved and sliced • 1 teaspoon thyme • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour • 1/4 cup tomato paste • 1/2 pint chicken or beef broth • 1/2 cup frozen peas • 3/4 teaspoon salt, divided • 1/2 teaspoon pepper, divided

• 1/4 cup milk • 1 tablespoon butter
Peel the spuds and parsnips and cut into large pieces; place in a large saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and cook for 10-15 minutes or until tender. Drain. Meanwhile, in a large skillet, cook the beef and onion over a medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Stir in the cabbage, carrots, thyme and Worcestershire sauce. In a small bowl, combine the flour, tomato paste and broth and whisk until smooth. Gradually stir into meat mixture. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes or until the veggies are tender. Stir in the peas, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Drain the spuds and parsnips and mash with milk and butter and the remaining salt and pepper. Serve with the meat mixture… you are a chef! Wash that down with a pint, SLantié!
Although born in Dublin, Ireland, Chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.
