requirement when majorities abuse the democratic process to discriminate against minorities,” said Elizabeth Schwartz, an attorney working on the couples’ case, in an email obtained by the Miami Herald. “Florida’s marriage ban unfairly excludes same-sex couples from one of our society’s most important freedoms.” Schwartz said courts across the country are recog-

nizing that laws and that Florida is behind in matters of equality. The office of Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi is defending the state in the federal lawsuit, and the Miami Herald reports that a spokeswoman said Bondi’s office is monitoring the case in Miami-Dade County as well.

iami, FL – A coalition of black and Hispanic civil rights groups and pastors are defending Florida’s constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, challenging the basis of the recent Miami lawsuit that seeks to overturn the ban. On Friday, the groups announced that the effort to overturn the same-sex marriage ban “threatens to violate the rights of the Florida voters who approved the ban by a wide margin in November 2008,” according to a report obtained by the Miami Herald. The ban currently defines marriage as a legal union of “only one man and one woman as husband and wife” and refuses to acknowledge anything else. In 2008, the ban passed with 62 percent of the vote. “The lawsuit directly infringes on Florida voters’ rights to amend their state constitution and their access to the political process,” said Alexander Alfano, the coalition’s attorney. In January, six gay couples sued in Miami-Dade County Circuit Court, saying Florida’s ban “violates the U.S. Constitution’s guarantees of equal protection and due process.” Supporters say attitudes toward gay marriage have changed recently; Not just in Florida. The groups, including the Florida Democratic League and People United to Lead the Struggle for Equality, filed court papers on February 25, saying a judge should toss out the lawsuit. The coalition has also launched an online petition to gather support for their efforts, at www.donttrashmyvote.com. “Equal protection is the foundation of our democracy, and it is the role of the courts to enforce that

Tampa Judge Postpones Decision on Same-Sex Divorce Case Tampa, FL – Circuit Judge Laurel M. Lee postponed making a decision on Thursday that would allow a lesbian couple to divorce, reports the Tampa Bay Times. Judge Lee told attorneys who are representing Mariama Changamire Shaw, 47, and Keiba Lynn Shaw, 45, to come back at a later date, which some are speculating could challenge Florida’s ban on same-sex marriage.

“This is obviously a significant and important legal argument for your clients,” Judge Lee told the attorneys, “and one that I want you to have every opportunity to argue before the court.” Married four years ago in Massachusetts, the couple relocated to Florida in 2011. They separated in October, and filed for divorce on January 15. The settlement agreement, part of a collaborative divorce proceeding, was worked out in March. “We should not be as a state discouraging people from moving to Florida because once here they are forever married,” said Attorney Ellen Ware, one of the two lawyers representing Changamire Shaw. “Essentially by refusing to divorce people, we are telling them if they move here they are stuck.”

Washington, D.C. – Florida judicial nominee Darrin Gayles is getting close to becoming the country’s first black, openly gay man to serve as a federal judge (Deborah Batts was the first black, openly LGBT federal judge when she was sworn in in 1994). Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) has reportedly “given the green light” to the Senate Judiciary Committee to proceed with Gayles’ nomination by giving a “blue slip” to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, according to the Huffington Post. Rubio famously refused to turn in a blue slip for William Thomas last year, another openly gay Florida judicial nominee. “This is a good thing, a very good thing,” said Fred Sainz, a spokesman for the Human Rights Campaign, reports the Huffington Post. “Judge Gayles is

exceptionally well qualified and deserves to be on the bench,” Sainz said. “Judge Thomas was similarly well qualified and, for reasons that are still completely unclear, he didn’t make Rubio’s subjective cut.” Gayles will next have to clear a committee hearing and pass the Senate as well before cementing his historical position.

“My case states I was wrongfully terminated from Old Florida after revealing my HIV status to the new owners,” ex-employee Stephen Kosiorek told us. In a suits demand draft from The Law Offices of George Castrataro (signed Lisa J Conrey, Esq., Attorney at Law), it is reported that Kosiorek divulged the information of his HIV status due to his newly-prescribed medication having a number of side-effects. One sideeffect of the drug is frequent urination, so Kosiorek reportedly told the owners to inform them. But when Kosiorek told the owners, “[They] did not reply or illustrate any sort of empathy or indifference – rather only an awkward silence resulted.” Though Kosiorek’s representatives claim that he was well-liked by customers, the case claims that he faced new complaints “allegedly filed by co-workers and patrons of the restaurant.” When Kosiorek pressed, asking where the claims came from, the draft reports that the owners allegedly reprimanded him, and subsequently terminated him around February 15, 2014, via text message. Kosiorek is seeking legal actions against the restaurant unless the establishment gives compensation within 15 days. Old Florida Seafood House has not responded to the Florida Agenda as of print.

Charlotte, NC – In an interview with The Charlotte Observer, Franklin Graham (son of Billy Graham) said that not only was Obama pushing a “gay agenda,” but that Franklin himself is being singled out because of his difference in opinion. “As far as persecution, I’m attacked all the time for my religious beliefs,” the 61-year-old told the Observer. Franklin said that he is simply saying what his father Billy would say if he was a younger man. “You talk about controversy – my father stood with Martin Luther King in the eartly 1960s,” said Franklin. “My father never worried about polls. I don’t care about them, either. And with

Mountain View, CA – Mozilla Firefox recently announced its new CEO: Brendan Eich, a cofounder of Mozilla and the inventor of JavaScript. Since its announcement, LGBT coders have spoken out against the decision, citing his 2008 donation in support of Prop. 8. Now, Eich has released a statement on his personal blog in his defense. “I know there are concerns about my commitment to fostering equality and welcome for LGBT individuals at Mozilla,” Eich wrote on his blog. “I hope to lay those concerns to rest, first by making a set of commitments to you. … I am committed to ensuring that Mozilla is, and will remain, a place that includes and supports everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, age, race, ethnicity, economic status, or religion.” Though the Los Angeles Times reported the donation back in 2012, it resurfaced when Eich was named the company’s new CEO. “You will see exemplary behavior from me toward everyone in our community, no matter who they are; and the same toward all those whom we hope will join, and for those who use our prod-

the issues we are facing today – if my father were a younger man, he would be addressing and speaking out in the exact same way I’m speaking out on them.” Billy Graham, a spiritual guidepost for previous American presidents, adopted a loving-God personality later in life that eventually overshadowed his conservative beliefs from earlier in life. Franklin told the Observer he is working hard to make sure that the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association will continue down a conservative path. “I love people enough and care enough,” Franklin said, “to warn them … that if they chose to continue to live in sin, God is going to judge them one day and they’ll be separated from him for eternity in hell.” When Franklin was asked about the LGBT community and adoption, he was quick to point out that same-sex couples cannot reproduce on their own, eventually leading to a “recruitment” theory. “Of course, gays and lesbians cannot have children,” he said. “They can recruit. You can adopt a child into a marriage, but you can also recruit children into your cause. I believe in protecting children from exploitation – all exploitations.”

Indianapolis, IN — Lambda Legal recently asked for the state of Indiana to recognize the marriage of a lesbian couple due to one of the women being terminally ill. Niki Quasney’s stage IV cancer is taking its toll, but Quasney and wife Amy Sandler are not recognized as legally married in their home state of Indiana. The two women entered a civil union in Illinois and were then married in Massachusetts in 2013, and are worried about their future protections and benefits following Quasney’s imminent passing. New York, NY – Over 50 protestors showed up to a demonstration on Saturday at the ATLAH Missionary Baptist Church in New York City, asking for Pastor James David Manning to stone them for their alleged sins. The Harlem church recently updated their marquee to “Jesus Would Stone Homos,” and “Harlem Is a Homo-Free Zone,” according to a recent press release. After the marquee’s updated messages appeared, the sign was vandalized with a graffiti that reads “God Is Gay.” The crowd arrived with a 40-foottall rainbow banner, shouting “Harlem queers under attack! What do we do? Act up!,” and other defensive chants according to the press release. Signs held by protestors included “God is love” and “Let he without sin cast the first stone.” The organizer of the event, Harlem transgender activist Jennifer Louise Lopez, created the protest after she recently appeared at the church and asked an employee for her stoning, and subsequently did not receive any resolution to the conflict. The crowd of over 50 people that returned, were reportedly yelling “We’re here for our stoning!” “[Manning] is a very hateful and dangerous man,” Lopez told the crowd according to the press release. “We will no longer stand by while Evangelical Christian churches misrepresent us.” The report claims that Manning did not emerge at any point during the protest.

receiving “the ability to access federal and state safety nets for surviving spouses and their children, and the right to a death certificate that accurately reflects their marriage,” according to a statement from Lambda Legal. “Further, Ms. Quasney and Ms. Sandler frequently travel far from their home to receive medical treatment as a result of their prior experience with the local hospital suggesting it would defer to state law to determine whether a couple is married.” Indiana currently bans same-sex marriage, including recognition of marriages from other states where it is legal. The gay ban is not written into the state constitution, unlike other states. Lambda filed a suit last month, and as of Monday, has added Sandler and Quasney to the case in hopes that it will escalate their story and the urgency of the situation.

over. So, we need to keep our minds open until the day we vote. But is the gubernatorial race the only path toward equal rights? Not at all. As I write this, the state ban on gay marriage is being challenged in the courts. If such a challenge were to have the same conclusion as similar challenges in other states, we stand a very good chance of having the ban struck down in the courts. But, even that, is a long and costly process. And the result we are seeking is not guaranteed. There is yet another path. Why not concentrate our efforts on repealing the 2008 amendment at the ballot box? It would only take about 611,000 signatures to get such proposal on the ballot. Surely, we have more gays than that attending all the circuit parties throughout South Florida. Considering how the ban was passed in 2008, I think we stand a good chance of overturning it with the voters. Just prior to that election, Quinnipiac University revealed a poll which showed that the ban was well short of the 60% majority required to become law. But in the final election, it was passed with almost 62% of the vote. So, what happened? I remember reading the amendment and thinking how easily the words could be misinterpreted. This is what it said: “Inasmuch as marriage is the legal union of only one man and one woman as husband and wife, no other legal union that is treated as marriage or the substantial equivalent thereof shall be valid or recognized.” To a voter who felt rushed during that election, as many were with the high turnout at the polls, it would be the first part of the sentence that would impress. It seemed to ask if you are for marriage as the legal union of one man and one woman. Well, yes. I think everyone is for that. What the amendment should have said was, “Do you want a Constitutional Amendment that prevents same-sex marriage and civil unions?” I am convinced that, if it had been stated that way, the ban would not have become law. This time around, we need to state the case clearly. “Are you in favor of equality for all to legalize same-sex marriage and civil unions?” Or something similar to that. I am certain that, just as recent polls have shown voters support same-sex marriage invariably by 60%, this new proposal to overturn Amendment 2 will be passed by Florida voters. DENNIS DEAN

L

ast week, former Gov. Charlie Crist came to campaign among LGBT supporters in South Florida. He was well received and a fundraiser at the home of local Commissioner Dean Trantalis was attended by such unlikely bedfellows as former Broward County Sheriff Al Lamberti, publisher Norm Kent and Michael Albetta. But the debate amongst gays, about which candidate to support in the gubernatorial race, intensified. While the Log Cabin Republicans were meeting in Miami to figure out how to have an effective voice within the GOP, community leader Michael Rajner and Wilton Manors Vice Charlie Crist Mayor Julie Carson were urging voters to support candidate Nan Rich for governor, making the case that Rich has a consistent record of being on the side of gay rights throughout her legislative career. While there are clearly many paths to take on the way to the Democratic primary for governor in August and the ensuing general midterm election in November, we must all recognize that those paths need to lead to the same final goal: equal rights for LGBT individuals in Florida. More specifically, a repeal of the odious Amendment 2 of the 2008 election—the amendment that made same sex marriage and civil unions illegal in this state. Rajner is right about Nan Rich. She would be a powerful ally in the governor’s seat. If her chances to beat Crist in the Democratic primary and, more importantly, to unseat Governor Rick Scott in the general election, were as certain as her support for gay rights, Nan Rich would be the clear choice for us. Doubtless, the candidate from Weston enjoys wide support among gays. It would help us to make a decision if Charlie Crist were to agree to debate her—and, personally, I think, it would help Crist. But Rich is having a tough time getting the attention of the media. Her events are rarely covered in print or by television crews. Her name is not even given as an option in opinion polls on the race for governor. Though it would seem we are being forced to accept Charlie Crist’s apology for opposing equal rights for gays in the past and to trust his recent statements of support, Crist will have a little credibility in convincing other leaders and residents of the state to repeal the anti-gay marriage amendment, which he helped pass as governor. Yet, he seems to be our best bet (for now). The election is a process. And that process is not yet

ach year, Dancing with the South Florida Stars puts your favorite local entertainers under one roof, where they must fight to the death for all to see. Ok, not really, but when a dance competition is involved, it may as well be to the death. The reason the event is so entertaining is because the participants (some experienced, some not) train and practice for one month before the performance, much like Dancing with the Stars. The twist, is seeing your favorite locals cut the rug like never before. Maybe you’ll see your favorite bartender from Village Pub perform the salsa. Or what if your preferred dancer from Boardwalk is going to be doing the tango? Dancing with the South Florida Stars will also be presenting Peter Jackson with the “Making a Difference Health and Wellness Community Leadership Award” this year. The event is sure to bring memories, and from now until the event on April 21, we’ll be unveiling each team for readers.

Following it’s grand opening last March, it didn’t take long for New York Grilled Cheese Co. to become one of the Drive’s dining staples. Luring in people from all over the tri-county area, the restaurant amps up the traditional grilled cheese, transforming their selections into gourmet sandwiches that everyone will love. Sandwich names are influenced by the Big Apple itself; The Fifth Avenue Yelp Melt (which just came to an end last week), the Broadway Classic and the Blue Buffalo to name a few. The sandwiches are made to order on a fresh country loaf, which is then pressed (giving it the appearance of a waffle) to give the ultimate crunch. While we always knew it would be a hit, New York Grilled Cheese Co. has been mentioned (favorably) in a number of publications, including year-end “best of ” lists. The grilled cheese mogul will be represented by owner Leor Barak’s partner, Ryan Steinberg, along with the fierce Mia Patrick, who performs at a number of clubs in the area (Bill’s Filling Station, Rumors and Discotekka to name a few). These two dancers mean business!

An 18-and-over club, Boardwalk features private lap dances and dancers to appeal to a wide range of ages and shapes, from twinks to studs. The club has two stages, located at either end of the main bar, and is also the home of the world famous restaurant, Beefcake’s.Boardwalk is popular with locals and visitors, with nightly events and special guest stars pulling in an international crowd. Representing Boardwalk are dancers Esman and Eduardo. Esman told us that he, like many of the contestants, is in it to win it. But when we asked what kind of dance the two would be performing for the crowd, Esman was protective of his performance. “You’ll have to come out and see for yourself – it’s a surprise,” the spunky dancer said, flashing a smile.

Trace the steps of the early settlers, take in the Misty Fjords National Monument in Tongass National Forest or stop by observation areas where you can glimpse spawning salmon and enjoy an up-close encounter with bald eagles.

take in the Misty Fjords National Monument in Tongass National Forest or stop by observation areas where you can glimpse spawning salmon and enjoy an up-close encounter with bald eagles. Next on the Alaskan cruise, you’ll sail through the Tracy Arm Fjord, on your way to Juneau, the only US state capital accessible by air or ship only. Day five brings you to Skagway, where, in 1897, gold stampeders from all over the world began their expedition into Canada’s Yukon Territory. The Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park offers the unique opportunity of a walking tour to some of the downtown locales frequented by the thousands of prospectors and miners that made their way through Skagway. After a day at sea, you’ll arrive in Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia. The city is a gentle blend of colonial England and contemporary Western Canadian culture. This is your last stop before returning to Seattle. Prices range from $1,750 to just over $2,000, making a Concierge class stateroom with a veranda not much more than a standard ocean-view room. Round-trip air fares from Fort Lauderdale are about $550.

gay scene of nearly 30 bars, clubs, cafes, and bathhouses. After a relaxing day aboard the boat sailing, while there is no pool aboard the ship, there is a hot tub on the top deck, you’ll arrive in Amsterdam the day before its celebrated Pride Festival. You’ll overnight on the Affinity, providing the perfect leaping off point for the festival. An optional postcruise stay at Hotel Pulitzer will allow you to enjoy the festival and relax before heading back home. Fares range from $3399 to $4499. Round-trip air fares are about $1,600 from Fort Lauderdale. Have you ever said, I’d sure like to take Mom/Dad/Aunt Betty or somebody straight-but-open-minded on a gay cruise? Brand g company specializes in tours that are inclusive; featuring a mix of gay men and lesbians, as well as straight allies. Brand g’s LGBT Friends and Family Alaskan group cruise on the Celebrity Solstice July 11-18, will sail from Seattle, and after a full day at seas, stops at Ketchikan, Alaska. You’ll have a day to explore the city, renowned for its unspoiled natural beauty, fishing and colorful native culture. Trace the steps of the early settlers,

ast week we took a look at Mediterranean cruises to enjoy this coming summer, but summer is also the perfect time to explore those Northern regions which might be too foreboding the rest of the year. Atlantis has an all-gay cruise heading to the land of the midnight sun from July 20 through 27. The journey begins in gay-friendly Copenhagen, then heads to Norway, with a full day in its majestic capital Oslo, home of Europride 2014. From there it’s on to historical Gothenburg, Sweden before sailing into port city of Warnermunde and boarding a private train to Berlin. After a day in Berlin, you’ll sail to Estonia, Helsinki, and arrive in Stockholm. The entire trip is on the Holland America Eurodam which has two pool decks, a spa and fully equipped fitness center. A two-story restaurant offers soaring views of the ocean and award-winning cuisine. Three other specialty restaurants offer outstanding choices for a special occasion, and of course, there are numerous cafes Misty Fjords National Monument and 24-hour room service. Queens Lounge offers cabaret entertainers, and there’s a sing along piano bar. After an open-air spinning well into the midnight sun. Fares film screening the pool deck turns into a start at $999, round trip air fare from Fort dance floor with three world-famous DJs Lauderdale is about $1,200. Meanwhile, RSVP is offering the Amsterdam Pride River Cruise from July 23 through Aug. 1. The trip begins in Zürich with two nights at the Marriott Zürich Hotel. With two full days, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy Zürich’s fine culinary highlights, unlimited shopping, more than 50 museums, and fantastic nightlife. Then you’ll transfer to Basel, to board Affinity. After sailing, your first stop takes is Strasbourg, the capital of France’s Alsace region, with optional excursions to Alsace’s famed vineyards. From there, you’ll cruise to Speyer, Germany with excursions to Heidelberg and the worldfamous Schloss Castle ruins. The next stop is Mainz, one of Germany’s loveliest wine towns. The boat doesn’t sail until the next morning, so late night explorations are possible. The next day you’ll sail through the Rhine Gorge, one of the most dramatic and awe-inspiring stretches of the river. Medieval castles tower above you until you arrive in Cologne at sunset. Cologne is Germany’s most liberal city with a thriving

RECIPE POTATOES “GRAAATAN” BY CHEF JEAN DOHERTY

T

his one is cheap, fast , easy and so delicious that you’ll make it often. Great to serve as a side with any fish or meat dish, or if your going all veggie, you can do it as your main.

• 4 thinly sliced spuds. • 3 knobs of butter • 3 heaped teaspoons of flour • 1 ½ cups of milk • Pinch of nutmeg • Salt & pepper • 1 ½ cups of grated

sharp cheddar

In a small sauce pan, melt butter and blend in flour. Let sit for a minute. Add all of the cold milk, stirring with a whisk. Season with salt and nutmeg. Cook the sauce on a low heat until smooth and boiling, stirring occasionally with a whisk. Reduce heat and stir in cheese. You have just made a béchamel sauce. Place a half of the sliced potatoes in a lightly greased one quart casserole dish. Pour half of cheese sauce over potatoes. Repeat with second layer of potatoes and cheese sauce. Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top. Top with some paprika for color, if you like, you are the chef. Bake uncovered for about 1 hour at 350°F.

Although born in Dublin, Ireland, Chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.

AMBROSIA GREEK BISTRO

DINING

BY GRANT JAMES

April 2, 2014

A

lthough there are a fair amount of Greek restaurants in South Florida, it’s hard to find that rich, savory comfort food you’ve been craving, let alone something that’s been made from scratch. But when Ambrosia Greek Bistro opened up on Commercial Blvd (just east of US-1), they decided to put an end to that nonsense, by providing delicious, fresh Greek food. The newly-opened restaurant had some early birds seated when we entered the dining room, which was surprising considering it was just after 5 p.m. – a very good sign for a new spot. We sat down and perused the menu for what felt like forever. Not because we couldn’t find anything; Because we found everything. In the end, we decided to order as much as we possibly could to sample a little bit of everything. We started with a tiropita ($7.95), which is essentially thin filo dough filled with (and wrapped with) a blend of imported cheese. Rich to say the least, but fantastic. For our courses, we ordered moussaka ($14.95), athenian chicken ($14.95) and a gyro plate ($14.95), all recommended by our waitress. When I say that the moussaka was one of the best meals I’ve had so far

this year, I’m not exaggerating. With layers of baked eggplant, ground sirloin, herbs, spices, and a bechamel sauce on top, this dish was what dreams are made of. It was comforting without going over the top with starches (it comes with sauteed vegetables and a rice pilaf on the side), making it a great choice for a protein-packed meal. The athenian chicken was stuffed with spinach, feta and dill, and was topped with a delicious lemon sauce which added a bite to the dill and feta flavors. Now, I’m sure you’ve had gyros before. You know, the tasty Greek sandwiches made from lamb (or beef with lamb)? Served with tomatoes, red onions and a side of tzatziki sauce, these wraps have become a staple in metropolis areas such as South Florida and New York. Ambrosia’s gyro plate? The best I’ve had in the area, hands down. The richness of the meat was complimented nicely by the homemade tzatziki sauce – a wonderful meal for someone looking for a heartier choice. It’s important to say that when we paid the bill, the restaurant was filled, so get there early. Whether you’re coming in for lunch, dinner, or takeout, Ambrosia Greek Bistro offers a variety of wonderful homemade Greek food. We’re already planning to go back to try the rest of the menu.

he writer Timothy Delvecc once said “The saddest people smile the brightest.” The quote holds some truth, as those who are the most hurt or lonely may be the last person we would ever expect to endure such a struggle. “But he always seems so happy,” you might think to yourself. While there’s no real way to tell who’s struggling on the inside, we thankfully have support groups in place to help aid those in need. The Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention saves lives regularly, and has since started their “Solutions Unlimited Now” program, which is targeted towards the LGBT community, teens, seniors, and others. We had to the opportunity to speak to Howard Cohen regarding the two groups and their impact on the gay community. Can you tell readers a little bit about the suicide prevention group? The Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention (FISP) was founded in 1991 by five families who all lost a 24 year old child by suicide. The Executive Director, Jackie Rosen, and her husband, Harry Rosen, Chairman of the Board are one of those original families. They lost their son Mitchell Rosen by suicide in 1986 and have been working hard ever since to help Prevent Suicide. FISP has become a tremendous support to the Broward County community by providing suicide prevention educational programs, support for survivors of suicide, phone support, and offering “The Solutions Unlimited Now” – SUN Program for LGBT, Teens, College Students, Seniors, Spinal

Q&A

You guys hold group meetups as well, yes? Our latest SUN group called “The Rainbow Club” is currently meeting at the Fusion office at 2304 NE 7th Avenue in Wilton Manors. We are still looking for new members. The group consists of gay men from the age of 45-65. The group officially started on March 18th and runs 10 weeks until May 20, 2014, Tuesday afternoons from 3:30 to 5pm. Can you tell readers more about the SUN group? The SUN group provides a structured group counseling model which consists of a Problem Solving program to particular groups at no cost to the member. This ten step ten week program is facilitated by myself, a licensed mental health professional, in confidential groups of eight to ten participants.

Cord Injured Adults, and mothers recovered from addiction. FISP’s vision is to HELP STOP SUICIDE by offering help to all those who suffer or are contemplating suicide and to all those who are effected by the suicide of a loved one, by providing the alternatives of hope,

support, and resources to all. How can those in need reach someone? You can call the office line 954384-0344 or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273 TALK (8255) to speak to a live person.

What’s the goal for the Rainbow Club? Our hope with the Rainbow Club is to provide a safe place to discuss personal challenges about “fitting in” into the gay culture of the Wilton Manors/Oakland Park and to brainstorm possible solutions to reduce stress and avoid depression and the possibility of suicidal thinking. For more information on FISP, visit fisponline.org, or call 954-384-0344.

STREAMLINE YOUR WAISTLINE Sculpting the Perfect Six Pack

April 2, 2014

30

/floridaagenda

BY TOM BONANTI

T

here’s one sure way to strengthen, tone and sculpt that ornery midsection. Sure a lean, mean midsection is the result of good nutrition and regimented cardio, but for building those abdominal muscles, you’ve got to do crunches, pure and simple! Forget traditional situps – they’re tough on your neck, lower back, and they hardly isolate the rectus abdominus and obliques, which make up your “six-pack.” Crunches don’t require as much motion as sit ups, but they’re tougher. Performed properly, a crunch requires total contraction of the abdominals and obliques and there’s no relaxation point during each repetition. Doing crunches regularly will streamline your midsection faster than any other exercise or crazy ab contraption sold on TV. For best results, perform 3 sets of 15 reps of each crunch in

rapid succession. Make sure to really contract those ab muscles so that you feel the burn. Standing Crunches: Stand with hands behind head and feet shoulder width apart. Bend to the left and extend the left elbow forward. Pause, return to starting position and next bend and extend the right elbow forward. Feet Elevated Crunches: Lie on your back with hands behind head and legs bent at 90 degree angles, the lower legs on a bench, chair or exercise ball. Raise shoulders off the floor. Pause, then lower to starting position. Be careful not to pull on your head or neck as you crunch up. Feel the burn as you let your abs crunch to do all the work. Reverse Crunches: Lie on your back with hands behind a raised head with legs raised and bent at 90 degree angles. Proceed to raise hips off the floor, extending knees toward the head. Pause, then lower to starting position. Side Bends: Stand with feet wide apart and hands behind the head. Bend to the right as far as you can. Pause, then rise and bend to the left.

These will tighten and tone obliques which are rarely seen even on the trimmest guy, but strong obliques will streamline the waist line! Twisting Crunches: Lie on your back with hands behind a raised head with legs bent and feet flat on the floor. Proceed to raise the head and shoulders off the floor, twisting with all your might to the left. Pause, return to starting position and rise and twist to the right. Single leg Crunches: Lie on your back with hands behind a raised head, with the left leg extended outward and the right leg bent, foot flat on the floor. Proceed to simultaneously raise shoulders off the floor while extending the left leg up. Pause, then lower to starting position. The above routine will deliver results if performed 2-3 time per week. Remember, regular cardio and a low-fat diet are essential to your program if you really want a dynamite six pack! Contact trainertomb@aol.com for more tips. Visit my gym www. pumpnincgym.com, and call me today to set up a free intake (954) 557-1119.
