if either of the two current same-sex marriage cases against the state make waves. “Transgender marriages are no longer treated as suspect in the eyes of the SSA,” Lambda Legal Transgender Rights Project director Dru Levasseur said in the same statement. “The content and tone of the new guidance shows that the SSA has taken a big step forward in cultural competency about the transgender community. This important federal agency is providing greater dignity and demonstrating greater respect for transgender people. Today’s announcement removes many hurdles that transgender people had to overcome when they filed claims for spousal benefits. We hope no one has to ever again endure that disrespect that Ms. Asti experienced.”

ashington, D.C. – Last week, the Social Security Administration finally updated their guidelines for the eligibility of transgender individuals who are seeking survivor’s benefits. The new policy comes on the tail of a case involving 92-year-old transgender World War II veteran Robina Asti. Even though Asti was legally married to her husband Norwood, she was denied spousal benefits following his death. Previously, all cases that involved transgender marriages had to go through extra levels of clearance, creating delays for widowed individuals. Now, the policy states that transgender cases will be processed in the same way that cisgender cases are. “This is a critical development for all married transgender people, but is especially important for trans-

gender oder adults, who rely on the safety net of Social Security benefits,” said Karen Loewy, Lambda Legal Senior Attorney and Seniors Program Strategist in a recent statement from Lambda Legal. “The old policy subjected every claim for spousal benefits by a transgender claimant to lengthy and excessive scrutiny, presuming that a spouse’s gender transition was a barrier to receiving benefits. This new policy does a 180 degree turn – it presumes the validity of most marriages regardless of whether a spouse is transgender and ends the discriminatory special treatment experienced only by transgender spouses.” With the new law in place, seven states still have to take additional time to legally review transgender spousal cases on a case-by-case basis due to the SSA’s belief that state marriage laws are unclear when pertaining to transgender individuals. Florida is one of the seven states remaining, but that may change

SUNSHINE STATE Key West Couple Sues County Clerk for Refusing to Issue Marriage License Key West, FL – Aaron Huntsman and William Lee Jones have been together since 2003, and have a goal to be married by June, according to an article by KeysNet. Last week, the two sued Monroe County Clerk Amy Heavilin, challenging Amendment 2. Their lawyer, Bernadette Restivo, filed the lawsuit the same morning the couple applied for the marriage license in Key West, because as they planned, the clerk denied their application. “Until it changes or is found unconstitutional, it is the law,” said Ron Saunders, a general counsel at the clerk’s office “No clerk in the state can do anything until a judge rules otherwise or the law changes.” The couple have no plans to leave Key West, and they want their relation-

MARIO CAREAGA FOUND GUILTY: RELEASED DUE TO ANTI-GAY ALLEGATIONS

iami, FL – Following a guilty verdict, Mario Careaga was released on allegations of juror misconduct in his ongoing DUI manslaughter trial over the death of Nancy Lopez-Ruiz, a Miami Heat dancer. According to NBC Miami, the trial and subsequent verdict have been placed on hold after allegations surfaced of a juror who made anti-gay comments during the jury’s deliberations on Careaga’s case. Careaga, 46, was charged in the crash that killed Lopez-Ruiz on September 10, 2010. Though Careaga plead not guilty, he was found guilty of DUI manslaughter after almost 12 hours of deliberations. He was found guilty on one

count of DUI manslaughter and guilty on one count of DUI manslaughter with an unlawful blood alcohol level. After the anti-gay allegations came to light, the judge reportedly asked each juror: “Did you hear anyone make any derogatory comment regarding Mr. Careaga, or Mr. Stapleton, or their lifestyle, or being gay or anything like that?” Police say Careaga drifted out of his lane when he hit the 22-year-old dancer, who was thrown from her motorcycle and killed. Careaga said he had consumed two vodka drinks before the incident, according to police. Authorities report his blood alcohol level was .28 – more than three times the legal limit.

Help AIDS Walk Miami Raise This Year’s Goal Miami, FL – Until April 27, AIDS Walk Miami is asking for a little help to reach their $250k goal. If you can’t make it out to the event this year, you can still donate online, or by visiting your local Walgreens. “This continuous partnership with Walgreens is a testament to their commitment to, not only the South Florida community but their true passion to affect the lives of people impacted by HIV/AIDS as well,” a recent press release reads. “Care Resource is excited about their continued support of AIDS Walk Miami and their efforts to bring change to this community.” On Sunday April 27, the 26th Annual AIDS Walk Miami fundraiser will raise thousands of dollars to benefit Care Resource. Care Resource is a non-profit, community based AIDS service organization providing primary medical care, dental, psychosocial, case management, outreach and prevention, food bank, home delivered meals and nutritional counseling and education to over 15,00 residents living in Miami-Dade and Broward counties who are either affected or infected with HIV/AIDS. The fundraiser also benefits Food For Life Network Food Bank, which pro-vides meals and groceries, as well as nutritional counseling and education, to eliminate malnutrition and starvation in children and adults living with HIV/AIDS.

Tallahassee, FL – Equality Florida Institute will honor Edith “Edie” Windsor, the 85 year-old woman who helped lead the U.S. Supreme Court to recognizing same-sex marriages. Edie, along with Anastasia Hiotis and Carlton Fields Jorden Burt, will be honored at the organization’s St. Petersburg Gala on May 3. “At a time in history that has seen landmark milestones and victories, the Gala will provide the LGBT community and its allies the opportunity to celebrate the momentum that is building throughout the state and throughout the nation,” Equality Florida announced in a recent press release. “Florida now has more than 100 municipalities with LGBT protections in place, and 57% of Floridians now support marriage equality, putting us on the front line of southern states in this civil rights battle of the 21st century.” Edie Windsor met the love of her life, Thea Spyer, in 1965, and their relationship spanned nearly 50 years. The two married in Canada in 2007, but when Thea passed away in 2009, Edie was ordered to pay $363,00 in federal estate taxes; a tax that would not have been required if their marriage was recognized by the states. On June 26, 2013, she won a lawsuit at the U.S. Supreme Court that struck down the federal Defense of Marriage Act and secured the U.S. Government’s recognition of same-sex marriages. “At this pivotal moment, we are especially proud to have so many prominent civic, business and political leaders lending their names and their support to the fight for full equality,” said Nadine Smith, CEO of Equality Florida. “Their participation makes a powerful statement about how far we’ve come. Los Angeles, CA – One of Drag Race’s biggest contestants, season three’s Carmen Carrera, recently weighed in on the show’s use of a transphobic slur in a recent challenge called “Female or Shemale.” In a Tuesday Facebook post, Carrera slammed the show for using the term “shemale” on an episode that aired on March 17 (which is still receiving backlash weeks later). “Although I am certain RuPaul’s Drag Race didn’t mean to be offensive, let this be a learning experience,” Carrera said in her statement. “I think the show has opened up and educated the minds of many people who were ignorant to the world of drag, and has made equality and respect a possibility for those involved, not only as equal beings, but as phenomenal artists. After Dooley reportedly came out to his best friend and eventually, his very supportive team (and coach), he received “overwhelming” support from various people through emails, texts, and tweets. “I’m just grateful that when I finally did have that person I told, it was a positive influence,” he says in the video. Since coming out, the university has reportedly been very supportive of the young athlete. Recently, Notre Dame’s official website published a video feature that profiles the senior tennis player, in which Dooley, his coach and his fellow teammates all speak about how unimportant ones sexuality is when playing a sport. Dooley also offered support for other young gay athletes. “I wanted to let other student-athletes that are going through the same situation know that they are not alone and people will support you,” Dooley told the school’s official sports site in a new interview. “Hopefully we will pull people back from the pits of depression, which was my personal agenda.”

Washington, D.C. – Judge Colleen KollarKotelly issued a historical ruling on Thursday that states that gays and lesbians are protected under existing sex discrimination laws. In the case, Judge Kollar-Kotelly ruled that Peter TerVeer, a gay man suing his employer, the Library of Congress, because he felt that his supervisor made “a hostile environment in which he imposed his religion and sexual stereotypes,” would be protected. She ruled that his case falls under the protections of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. “Title VII prohibits an employer from

discirminating ‘agqinst any individual … because of such individual’s … sex,’” Kollar Kotelly said in a preliminary ruling on Monday. “Under Title VII, allegations that an employer is discriminating against an employee based on the employee’s non-conformity with sex stereotypes are sufficient to establish a viable sex discrimination claim.” “Here, Plaintiff has alleged that he is ‘a homosexual male whose sexual orientation is not consistent with the Defendant’s perception of acceptable gender roles,’ that his ‘status as a homosexual male did not conform to the Defendant’s gender stereotypes associated with men under Mech’s supervision or at the LOC,’ and that ‘his orientation as homosexual had removed him from Mech’s preconceived definition of male,” she said in the hearing. TerVeer’s boss, John Mech, also reportedly imposed antigay religious views on the employees. Kollar-Kotelly also noted that because of this, TerVeer could be protected under a religious discrimination law.

Johnson, the late president and strong supporter of civil rights for African-Americans, was apparently sympathetic to any group that was discriminated against, according to a recent interview with between Katie Couric and Johnson’s daughters, Luci Baines Johnson and Lynda Bird Johnson Robb. “I think my father felt very strongly that when there was bigotry anywhere, prejudice anywhere, all of us lose out,” said Luci Baines Johnson. “Because it’s just one more expression of hate.” “It’s hard to project what daddy would have thought about that because that wasn’t an issue that had come upon the States at that time,” her sister Lynda Bird Johnson Robb added. “But I know he really wanted everybody to be able to live up to the best that God gave them.” After John F. Kennedy was assassinated, Lyndon Johnson assumed the role of president (he was Vice President at the time). Johnson surprised a number of Americans with his support of civil rights for African-Americans. 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, which he signed into law in 1964. “I certainly think that, if God made you a homosexual, that you should have love and affection with somebody,” Robb told Couric. “And I would not want to deny anybody that opportunity to be happy.” Luci Baines Johnson added, “It’s a great civil rights concern of our day.” Though many have argued that LGBT discrimination echoes the Civil Rights Movement, it’s somewhat reaffirming to hear it from the late president’s family. After all, the Civil Rights Movement appears to have paved the way for the gay rights movement we’re familiar with today. “Until justice is blind to color, until education is unaware of race, until opportunity is unconcerned with the color of men’s skins, emancipation will be a proclamation but not

Digging through old quotes that touch on the Civil Rights Movement, you’ll find virtually all of them still apply to us today. “The question is not if we will be extremists, but what kind of extremists we will be,” Martin Luther King Jr. once wrote in a prison cell. Even the quotes from those who spoke out against the Civil Rights Act of 1964 sound hauntingly familiar to One Million Moms or the American Family Association. When speaking of the passing of the Civil Rights Act, politician Strom Thurmond was particularly vocal. “Mr. President, passage of this bill will visit the heel of oppression on all the people, vitiate their constitutional shield against tyranny, and materially hasten the destruction of the best design for self-government yet devised by the minds of men,” Thurmond said in 1964. “Its passage will mark one of the darkest days in history.” Yes, the mindless dribble that lashes out against “that which we don’t know” shlepped its way all the way to present day. “I think the thing that is getting a little tiresome, the gay community, they have so bullied the American people, and they’ve so intimidated politicians,” said Michele Bachmann in an interview last month. “The politicians fear them, so that they think they get to dictate the agenda elsewhere.” Fear not, as conservative radio show host Glenn Beck recently regaled us with this knowledge: The civil rights movement never really ended at all. In fact, we’re still still fighting for our rights. “How blind to believe the civil rights movement ever ended,” Glenn Beck said in a speech. “The civil rights movement never ends, and it never will. It has been marching since the beginning of time.” Too true, Glenn Beck.

ach year, Dancing with the South Florida Stars puts your favorite local entertainers under one roof to compete for the win. The reason the event is so entertaining is because the participants (some experienced, some not) train and practice for one month before the performance, much like Dancing with the Stars. The twist, is seeing your favorite locals cut the rug like never before. Maybe you’ll see your favorite bartender from Village Pub perform the salsa. Or what if your preferred dancer from Boardwalk is going to be doing the tango? Dancing with the South Florida Stars will also be presenting Peter Jackson with the “Making a Difference Health and Wellness Community Leadership Award” this year. The event is sure to bring memories, and from now until the event on April 21, we’ll be unveiling each team for readers.

The goal of the Wilton Manors Development Alliance is to create an environment on Wilton Drive where “commerce, art and housing enthusiastically coexist and provide mutual nourishment.” The program advocates improveVelvet ments in four areas, to create a positive, distinctive image and economic success for downtown Wilton Manors. Organization: Working with public and private sector community leaders to develop consensus and coordinate resources to revitalize downtown. Krishan Marketing: Creating and marketing a positive image of downtown through special events, retail sales, effective advertising and public relations. Design: Encouraging quality building rehabilitation and construction, signage, public improvements and window displays to improve the appearance of downtown. Economic Development: Improving the economic base of downtown by strengthening existing businesses, recruiting new businesses and filling vacancies. In short, the WMDA is seeking to keep the small town charm while creating a sophisticated, urban area that can thrive and grow. Representing the alliance for the event will be Krishan Manners, a realtor and business developer. Manners may be a familiar name within the commu-

nity, but here’s one thing you may not know about him: He’s participating in this event with no dancing experience. That’s right, Manners is excited to be training and learning the routine from scratch. “I have no experience dancing whatsoever,” Manners says. “I’m coming into this with no training or preparation.” Manners partner for the competition, Velvet LaNore, a drag queen with a lot of entertainment experience. We aren’t sure what they’ll be singing yet, but we’re sure it will be a memorable moment!

We here at Guy Magazine like to have a little fun as well sometimes. Maybe we kick off our shoes, put on our velour sweatpants and watch Scandal, or maybe we head to the club and dance until exhaustion. Representing Guy Magazine in the competition will be Frank Frank Campisano and Angeliki Pilioras. Campisano, a dancer and dance teacher, is enthusiastic about the competition. “I’ve always wanted to do this event, ever since the first show,” Campisano says. “I’m so glad to have this opportunity.” Angeliki His partner, Pilioras, has been performing at multiple venues in the area, earning recognition for her famed fire dancing.

The Village Pub has become a staple of gay community, providing the community with a friendly local bar that can still get wall-to-wall packed on Friday nights. The Wilton bar has fast become the go-to place almost any time of the week. The Jerry staff is welcoming and fun, the atmosphere is eclectic, and the bar attracts people from all walks of life. In addition to the bar’s weekly happy hour (Monday to Saturday until 9 p.m.), they have live shows, an open air patio, and Ashley multiple TV screens to enjoy both music videos and sports alike. Representing Village Pub in the competition are Jerry Selano and the lovely Ashley Blake. Jerry Selano, a bartender at Village Pub, is promising some serious salsa moves from his performance this year. “We’re working on our salsa moves,” Selano told us. “We’re here to have fun most importantly! We’re very excited.” Village Pub has a 400 square foot dance floor, and some nights it can get pretty busy on said dance floor, you know, in case you’re feeling frisky. It also has a stage behind the bar that is used for great live shows hosted by local talent.

ummer vacations are always a good opportunity for camp, and I don’t mean the kind with tents and sleeping bags. Writer Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Notes on Camp” described its key elements as, “artifice, frivolity, naïve middle-class pretentiousness, and ‘shocking’ excess”. I’m not certain if that is a complete definition, but to paraphrase United States Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart’s description of pornography, “I may not be able to describe camp, but I know it when I see it.” A trip across the country offers plenty of opportunities to see sites that almost drip with Sontag’s requirements of naïve middle-class pretentiousness, and ‘shocking’ excess. How else could you explain, a house made of corn (or beer cans, or soda bottles), Graceland or Dollywood? Those are all easy targets, but I’m a fan of really bad public art. Public art and culture depicting pop culture icons are right up my alley or highway or dirt road. If you’re looking for something to do this summer you could do worse than this driving trip to see the campiest pop culture statues and museums in the U.S. First stop Atlanta. There’s nothing campier than a company that takes itself too seriously, and a visit to the Coca Cola Museum will give you a fit of the giggles. “Experience the rich story of the unique of World of Coca-Cola” through this interactive experience complete with video highlights, images and descriptions.

Next stop Philadelphia. Skip the cheesesteak sandwiches and run up the 72 stone steps to the Philadelphia Museum, just like Rocky. During the filming of Rocky III, Sylvester Stallone commissioned a bronze statue of Rocky, which was briefly situated at the top of the steps. After filming was completed, a debate arose between the Art Museum and Philadelphia’s Art Commission over the meaning of “art.” City officials, argued that the statue was not “art” but a “movie prop”, and moved and the statue to the bottom of the steps. Now let’s head to the city that doesn’t sleep and the gleaming sculpture of Andy Warhol that towers above Union Square, in New York City, right across from the building where his Factory was located. Seven feet tall, cast in concrete, and covered in chrome, could you get more glitzy, gaudy and glamorous? Oh sure you can, put a Bloomingdale’s shopping bag in his hand! In 1692 Salem, Massachusetts, 25 people were either executed or died after being falsely accused of witchcraft. It remains one of the darkest black marks in American history. So what does the city do to improve its image? It erects a statue of a more recent witch, Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha from the sixties sitcom Bewitched! There may be other campy landmarks between Salem and Wisconsin, but I doubt anything can top The Bronze Fonz located on Milwaukee’s Riverwalk. From there it’s just a hop, skip and a toss of the Tam o’Shanter to the Mary Tyler Moore statue in Minneapolis, where Mar’ is caught in the middle of casting her hat into the air on Nicolette Mall. Next stop is the Potato Museum in Blackfoot, Idaho. Yep, an entire museum devoted to the spud. Not only does it have the world’s largest Pringle, but also a picture of Marilyn Monroe posing in a potato sack, a potato autographed by Dan Quayle (remember he famously misspelled potato) and a burlap fashion show. Blackwells Corner in Lost Hills, California, was the last place Dean stopped before his fatal accident. It’s also the site of

a vintage gas station and gift shop memorializing the star as well as the historic nature of the place. Our last stop is California, where’s there’s no shortage of campy destinations. There’s The Chinese Theater where you check the foot and hand prints of stars of the past or Hollywood Boulevard for the Walk of Fame, but my favorite camp locale is Palm Springs. In this gay oasis in the desert head over to Palm Canyon Drive, and step back in time. The street is lined with kitschy costume shops, dinner theaters and tacky but terrific souvenir vendors and now… the Forever Marilyn statue, a gigantic recreation of Ms. Monroe’s notorious scene from The Seven-Year Itch, undies and all. Enjoy your camping trip and don’t forget to stop by the gift shop on your way out.

HOW TO BUILD SHOULDERS LIKE BOULDERS

Big, broad shoulders complement your arms, chest and back and emphasize a well-developed upper body. The deltoid (musculus deltoideus) plays a critical role in building strong shoulder muscles. This is the large triangular muscle covering the shoulder joint which allows movement, extension and rotation of the arm. It’s made up of three sections – the front, middle and rear deltoid. Also critical to improving your shoulder strength is working the upper traps (trapezius), located between the neck and shoulders. Here are four great shoulder exercises using only dumbbells to work the front, rear and outer shoulders as demonstrated by NICK DILUCENTE, one of the personal trainers and group fitness instructors at Push Fitness.

BENT-OVER FLYES (Rear Shoulders) Holding dumbbells with palms facing each other, bend over until your back is just about parallel to the floor. Extend the weights until your arms are almost parallel to the floor. Hold to the count of three then lower to the starting position. Perform 3 sets of 12 to 15 reps.

FRONT RAISES (Front Shoulders) Sitting on a bench, hold a pair of dumbbells at your sides, palms facing in. Next, raise your right arm up and out in front of you until it is parallel to the floor. Pause, then lower to starting position. Perform 3 sets of 10-15 alternating repetitions with each arm.

KNEELING ROWS (Front Shoulders) Bend over a bench with your left knee and left hand supporting your body and your right hand grasping a dumbbell, palm in. Pull the weight up to your chest. Pause then lower to the starting position. Perform 10-15 reps then switch the weight to the left hand and kneel on your right knee for another set.

MILITARY PRESSES (Outer Shoulders) Sit on a bench and grasp a pair of dumbbells above your shoulders with your palms facing out. Next, press the weights overhead until your arms are almost straight. Pause then lower to the starting position. Perform three sets of 10-15 reps.

he celery root only became a novelty vegetable in 19th-century America. Its popularity spread during the middle decades of the century from Germany, its home, to France, and then to America. One reason for its popularity was that it conveyed the taste of celery without all the difficulties attending the growing and blanching of regular celery. Hence, for a host of uses in stews and soups, it was more convenient and a cheaper way to supply that fresh, distinctive celery note. As a root, it kept for months, while ordinary celery wilted or rotted within weeks of harvest.

• 3/4 cup Homemade Mayonnaise • 8 medium cornichons, sliced 1/8 inch thick • 2 tablespoons capers, drained • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard • Coarse sea salt and freshly ground pepper • 1 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice • 3 tablespoons finely chopped fresh tarragon • 3 tablespoons finely chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley • 1 medium celery root, peeled (about 1 1/2 pounds)

In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, cornichons, capers, and mustard. Season with salt and pepper. Blend until well combined. Fold in tarragon and parsley; set aside. Slice the celery root, using a mandoline fitted with the julienne blade, into 1/8-inch-thick strips into a large bowl. Add your mayonnaise mixture, and toss to combine. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Garnish with cayenne pepper. Use shrimp and make a meal, or Add a golden delicious apple and a carrot…You are the chef.

s RuPaul’s Drag Race goes, the sixth season is definitely a press-on nail-biter. The competition is fierce and fishy. But if you ask anyone, there are two frontrunners in heels. They are Courtney Act and Bianca Del Rio. Courtney (aka Shane Jenek) is a glam blonde who is a multi-threat because she not only looks great, but she can also sing in her own voice. No stranger to the world of TV competition shows, Jenek was a 2003 Australian Idol semi-finalist. Since then Courtney has released a few singles, include the recent “To Russia With Love.” But it’s her appearance on Drag Race that has been earning Act her biggest and most devoted following to date. I spoke with Courtney Act about RuPaul’s Drag Race and her upcoming Miami Beach Gay Pride appearance on April 13.

Guy Magazine: Shane, I’d like to begin by talking about your drag name, Courtney Act. Was there something you were caught in the act of doing that inspired the name? Shane Jenek/Courtney Act: [Laughs] No, I just thought that it was a cute name. I thought Courtney Act would be a good play on words. As a seasoned competitor, how did being on Australian Idol prepare you for RuPaul’s Drag Race? Being on Australian Idol, the actual show prepared me a little bit. But what happened after Idol prepared me a lot. It thrust me into the professional world where I was performing in musicals and acting and working in television and things like that. I really feel fortunate for having had the Idol experience.

Who do you see as your greatest competition on RuPaul’s Drag Race? I would have to say my biggest competition is Bianca Del Rio. She’s very talented. She might be the queen of mean, but she’s got a heart of gold. She’s pretty lovable. She’s so funny and so witty; she’s a producer’s dream. Bianca del Rio is like a comedy writer sitting up in the box feeding somebody lines, except she’s on the show and she’s giving herself lines. There is an improvisational nature to her. Yes, she’s talented and witty and hysterical. I feel like every reality TV show producer is going to be like, “Oh, my God! We have to have an improvisational comedian on every show moving forward.” Of the competitors who have been eliminated so far, are there any that you think went home too soon? Yes. I really enjoyed Milk. I thought Gia Gunn was hysterical. I think those two were fun. I don’t think anybody went home too soon. There were some you thought were going to be here a bit longer. Sometimes it’s that extra week or two weeks that somebody stays and you get to see them blossom. Definitely. They get the chance to really come out of their shells. Then there are a few other people who seem to get a few extra chances…[laughs]. Shane, is RuPaul all she’s cracked up to be? Definitely! You watch it on television and you wonder what RuPaul’s like. The minute you’re in the same room with her you can feel RuPaul. You can feel this warmth, this genuineness. More

than anything, I would say I’ve never felt somebody’s passion for drag nearly as much as RuPaul’s. She really believes in drag. It helped me believe in and love drag even more. I really love what I do and I love being an entertainer. But I don’t think I ever realized how important drag was in that. Drag has a really powerful quality that RuPaul helped me realize. As Courtney Act, you recently performed your cabaret show Boys Like Me to sold-out crowds at The Laurie Beechman Theatre in NYC. Do you have plans to tour the US with the show? Yes, definitely. That’s my dream. Boys Like Me, is like a one-woman live show with a band; it’s my favorite thing to do on the entire planet. Performing in clubs is fun, but it’s not nearly as creatively fulfilling as the cabaret show. My goal is to do club gigs this summer, tour around and get people to see me live and then come back later in the year and tour my cabaret show. I want to do that thing you see in movies where an artist is promoting a new album or something and they get on a bus with the band and they drive from city to city around America. I want to do that. Drive into a new city each week and do Boys Like Me Wednesday through Sunday night and drive on to the next city and do it all again the next week. I think you make it sound a lot more glamorous than it is. I think because my reference for the tour bus is from (the Spice Girls movie) Spice World [laughs]. That’s my idea of a tour bus, the Spice Girls tour bus. That would be fun!

I think in reality it would be some janky old Greyhound. And don’t be surprised if you find yourself driving that bus once in a while. I’ll have to get my heavy vehicle license. You will be performing in April at Miami Beach Gay Pride. Have you performed at other Pride festivals and if so, which ones? I performed at the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras which is one of the biggest Pride festivals in the world. I recently performed, with 68 dancers, at the Mardi Gras Party which is a circuit party for several thousand people. It was one of the most amazing performance experiences that I’ve done. But (Miami Beach Gay Pride) will be my first Pride in America. With that in mind, what are you most looking forward to about performing at Miami Beach Gay Pride? What I love about Prides is that they’re all-inclusive. Performing at a gay club or bar, you get people who go out on weekends and whatnot. I find that Prides bring people out of the woodwork. There’s such a wide cross-section – people who are young, people who are not so young, gay, lesbian, straight and everything in between. I like that. Because I think that the gay community, from my understanding of old stories passed down, used to be so much more intermixed from the different sub-communities. I really like when that happens. The twinks get to learn from the bears and the bears get to learn from the lesbians and everyone learns about each other and we get closer and tighter knit as a community.
