JUDGE STRIKES DOWN MARRIAGE BAN IN OHIO

/floridaagenda

COVER STORY

BY GRANT JAMES

April 16, 2014

olumbus, OH – Earlier this month, a federal judge in Ohio ruled in favor of same-sex marriage recognition (if the wedding was performed in another state), but there was a stay in place. Judge Timothy Black has now made the decision final and has issued a ruling that orders Ohio to recognize gay weddings performed in other states. The ruling says that Ohio’s ban on recognizing legal same-sex marriages performed in other states violates the U.S. Constitution. Though the ruling will recognize legal marriages from other states, Ohio will not be performing same-sex marriages within the state. “The record before the court, which includes the judicially-noticed record in Obergefell, is staggeringly devoid of any legitimate justification for the State’s ongoing arbitrary discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, and, therefore, Ohio’s marriage recognition bans are facially unconstitutional and unenforceable under any circumstances,” Black told the Washington Blade. Evan Wolfson, the founder and president of Freedom to Marry, celebrated the news through a blog post on the organization’s official site on Monday. “Couples who are married should be treated as married no matter where they are in the country, including Ohio,” said Evan Wolfson in a statement from Freedom to Marry. “Couples should not have to play ‘now you’re married, now you’re not’ as they travel, work, move, or return home. This is a good day for families and businesses in Ohio, and a good day for the Constitution and America.” Back on April 4, the Associated Press reported that Black told both attorneys in the case of Henry V. Wymsylo that he believed the voterapproved law violates the equal protection and due process clauses of the U.S. Constitution. The Human Rights Campaign praised his early decision, announcing that it gave great hope for the future of nationwide marriage equality. “For the second time Judge Black has affirmed that the marriages of committed and loving same-sex couples must be recognized by the state of Ohio,” said HRC president Chad Griffin in a statement earlier this month. “Since the Supreme Court’s landmark marriage equality rulings last June, not a single state marriage ban has survived a federal court challenge. It’s only a matter of time before marriage equality is the law of the land in not just Ohio, but every corner of America.”

SUNSHINE STATE Miami Beach Achieves Perfect Score on HRC’s Pro-Equality Report Miami Beach, FL – Last week, the community celebrated the City of Miami Beach for achieving a perfect score of 100 points on the Human Rights Campaign’s Municipal Equality Index (MEI), making it the highest-ranking city in the State of Florida, and the second in the country. In total, 293 cities nationwide, including 15 big cities in Florida, were evaluated for the index. In a statement from Equality Florida Deputy Director Stratton Pollitzer, the City of Miami Beach was praised for its

LGBT-friendly policies. “In the fight for equality, Miami Beach has long been a leader in Florida when it comes to supporting the rights of the city’s LGBT employees, as well as residents and visitors,” Pollitzer said in a statement. “This incredible score is a giant welcome mat for Miami Beach and sets an example for others throughout the state and throughout the nation. Whether you are here to work, play or build a family, Miami Beach is a city where you will be respected and invited to be a part of this vibrant community. In our many years of working with Miami Beach, the city has always striven to be a leader and make each of its prodiversity policies among the strongest and most comprehensive in Florida and in the nation.”

Gay Veterans Art Series Premieres in Wilton Manors

Community Foundation Opens Office in Wilton Manors

Wilton Manors, FL – The recently opened Tedds ART WORKS Gallery in Wilton Manors has just announced a new featured art series with a strong political theme. “ASK,TELL!” is a series by Ed Stevens that features a group of soldiers marching in all of the colors of the gay flag, according to a press release. It also celebrates the end of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” and recognizes gay service members and all veterans. “We’re proud to present Ed’s work, including his “ASK, TELL!” series,” said owner Tedd Davis in a press release. “The bright primary colors of the gay flag and the use of miniature soldier figurines – “Army Men” as children call them – also evoke for many the memories of childhood.” The opening reception will take place on Saturday May 3 from 7-10 p.m. It will run until May 29, on Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or by appointment. The gallery is located at 2422 N Dixie Hwy, Wilton Manors.

Wilton Manors, FL – Anthony Timiraos, a Fort Lauderdale accountant, is looking to link various LGBT-related nonprofits with donors to meet the rising demands of the community. According to the Sun-Sentinel, Timiraos’s foundation is the first of its kind in South Florida, and is just one of a handful of community foundations worldwide. “I always say, ‘You need to take care of your own, because no one is going to do it for you,’” Timiraos (who happens to be gay) told the Sun-Sentinel. “And unless the gay community steps up, it won’t be taken care of.” The foundation, called Our Fund, reaches out to potential donors, using tax breaks, stocks and bonds and incentives to come on board. The organization focuses on five separate areas: youth, women, seniors, health, education, arts and culture. The new office is located at 1600 NE 26th St in Wilton Manors. Denver Rally Draws Hundreds

Portland, OR – In a statement by independent comic book publisher Oni Press, the company announced that they will stop purchasing office and packaging materials from ULine due to their support of Family-PAC, a political organization that previously tried to block same-sex marriage in Illinois.

April 16, 2014 9

Denver, CO – A reported 200 people showed up to a Wednesday evening rally outside of the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver to support marriage equality. The rally took place just hours before the court began hearing opening arguments in the Kitchen v. Herbert, the federal case against Utah’s ban on samesex marriage. The plaintiffs in the case are three same-sex couples, represented by attorneys James Magelby and Peggy Tomsic, who will argue that the federal district judge who struck down Amendment 3 was correct in determining that the law violated the Equal Protection and Due Process clauses of the U.S. Constitution. Attorneys for the state’s Republican governor and attorney general will argue that the constitutional amendment protects children, and that any “redefinition” of marriage that would include same-sex couples “poses real, concrete risks to children – especially in future generations,” according to a brief published by The Wire. “These laws deny Plaintiffs the stability, security, and protections that other families enjoy,” a brief filed by the plaintiffs reads. “In addition, treatment of Plaintiffs and other same-sex couples in Utah as strangers, rather than families, demeans their deepest relationships and stigmatizes their children by communicating that their families are second class.”

The statement, which was signed by the company’s staff (including publisher Joe Nozemack and Editor in Chief James Luca Jones), states, “Everyone is entitled to their opinion and beliefs, but it is also up to us whether or not we choose to support them. We choose instead to support our readers, creators, and employees regardless of their gender identity, race, or sexual orientation which is why effective immediately, we are severing all ties with ULine and pursuing a relationship with a local vendor.” ULine is controlled by Richard Uihlein, who is reported to be one of Illinois’s biggest Republican contributors. He has allegedly contributed to FamilyPAC as well as Illinois Family Institute, another conservative group. “While our professional relationship with ULine has been a prospeous one,” Oni’s statement reads, “the fact that FamilyPAC is funded in part by ULine’s CEO, Robert Uihlein, is information we cannot abide or ignore.”

Denver, CO – U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman has become the seventh Republican House member to come out in favor of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. In an interview with Politico, Coffman announced that he supports ENDA because of the “Golden Rule.” “I see this legislation as the workplace equivalent of the Golden Rule – do unto others, as you would have them do unto you,” Coffman said to Politico. “In the workplace, in 2014, we should judge employees the way we would want to be judged – based on our qualifications, our contributions and by our character, period.” An LGBT workplace equality organization, Freedom to Work, praised Coffman for his support of ENDA, telling The Advocate that organizers have been meeting with him for the past few months. “We applaud Congressman Coffman for supporting the freedom to work without discrimination for all Americans,” said Christian Berle, legislative director for Freedom to Work, in a statement to The Advocate. “When I met with the Congressman to discuss this legislation, he impressed me with his conservative case for giving LGBT Americans a fair shot to contribute to

Why Colbert is the Perfect Replacement for Letterman

April 16, 2014

12

W

hile he won’t be playing the character portrayed on The Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert has been officially named the replacement for David Letterman on the

“Late Show.” The announcement brought a truckload of internet controversy (of course), and in a matter of hours, very polarized opinions. “How could he replace someone as legendary as Letterman?” I found myself thinking. “I mean don’t get me wrong he’s hilarious, but... the replacement for Letterman?” While he may never be as awkwardly charming as Letterman, Colbert does have some redeeming qualities, and I’m fairly certain he will do just fine. First of all, the man is hilarious. While his out-of-character, actual personality is very down-to-earth and likable, he has the ability to cut you down on command. This guy has received more blank stares than Louis C.K. and, I don’t know, Lindsay Lohan, combined. He shocks his interviewees more than James Lipton for God’s sake. Remember

when he roasted George Bush at a White House function in 2006? Priceless. Just imagine what he could do out of character? Colbert also actively defends the LGBT community. His tongue-in-cheek vibe coupled with sarcastic one-liners makes Colbert, Colbert. He constantly puts the world on the spot whenever a ridiculous story involving the LGBT community emerges and even appeared at the Vancouver Olympics Pride House where he spoke in-depth with its executive director Jennifer Breakspear. He’s also totally humble. When speaking about the differences between himself and his character, he said: “I wouldn’t want to be that a**hole. He’s got a tremendous ego. I get to pretend I don’t.” He even teaches Sunday school! He’s also a bit of a nerd (he’s a huge fan of Lord of the Rings). Colbert has humor, wit, compassion and of course, charm, so we doubt it’s going to be a rocky transition. Besides, just remember: If Jimmy Fallon can take over for Jay Leno, anything is possible.

DANCING WITH THE SOUTH FLORIDA STARS:

E

BY GRANT JAMES

ach year, Dancing with the South Florida Stars puts your favorite local entertainers under one roof, where they must fight to the death for all to see. Ok, not really, but when a dance competition is involved, it may as well be to the death. The reason the event is so entertaining is because the participants (some experienced, some not) train and practice for one month before the performance, much like Dancing with the Stars. The twist, is seeing your favorite locals cut the rug like never before. Maybe you’ll see your favorite bartender from Village Pub perform the salsa. Or what if your preferred dancer from Boardwalk is going to be doing the tango? Dancing with the South Florida Stars will also be presenting Peter Jackson with the “Making a Difference Health and Wellness Community Leadership Award” this year. This is the third part in a series of articles on Dancing with the South Florida Stars.

Elaine Lancaster

The actor (James Davis) behind Elaine was born in Alabama and raised in Georgia, while Elaine was “born in the lap of luxury, pampered by all, and spoiled rotten,” according to the diva herself. Like the true diva she became, she managed to spend every dime thrown her way developing an unquenchable quest for more. Lancaster has been the host of the White Party Miami for the past 15 years, and has also hosted White Party Palm Springs and Gay Ski Week in Aspen. She’s the official pride spokesperson for Gay Pride Miami Beach and also stars on The Real Housewives of Miami. In the past, Elaine has appeared on “Friends,” as well as segments on E! Entertainment and BBC UK. She’s currently promoting her brand new, Elaine Lancaster cosmetics line.

Terry DeCarlo

Gary Santis

Director of Development over at Broward House – a non-profit dedicated to improving the lives of individuals living with or at risk for HIV and other health issues through the provision of high quality services in a “loving, caring atmosphere, regardless of the individuals financial status” – DeCarlo is a true local activist. He’s fighting the good fight for his community, providing necessary services to those in need. DeCarlo was also a producer for One Magical Weekend in Orlando, and the World AIDS Day Concert with Wanda Sykes, Margaret Cho and Cheech & Chong. Formerly, DeCarlo was a director for Care Resource as well as the GLCCSF. He was also one of the founding board members of the Stonewall Street Festival & Parade in Wilton Manors.

Gary Santis came to be recognized in the international nightlife scene through the Warsaw Ballroom in Miami Beach in the ‘90s, where he really made a name for himself. Santis then moved on to become the man behind the legendary gay club known as Coliseum. Currently, Santis is focusing on one of Wilton Manor’s hottest clubs: The Manor. The club – which sees local, national and even international talent – is the biggest nightclub on The Drive, and draws in a consistently large crowd each week to boot. Gary is also the producer of the White Party and Black Party in Fort Lauderdale, and has been a producer for the famed Miss Florida Female Impersonator Pageant. Santis has also been a producer and part owner of the competition for the past 15 years.

Erika Norell

Erika Norell is one of the most celebrated drag title-holders in the country: She’s won over 50 titles worldwide. While currently the house entertainer over at The Manor, Norell travels extensively to perform at various gigs across the country. Norell is also one of the leading house divas over at Off the Hookah on Sunday nights, which sees hundreds of people each week. One thing you may not know? When the diva’s not performing, she is creating designer outfits for a number of local and international entertainers!

Meet the Teams Discotekka

Alibi is Wilton Drive’s favorite spot on a Thursday night. Those mason jars are lethal, but people guzzle them like it’s..well, a jar full of liquor. This video bar is the place to be seen, or to simply sit at a table with friends in an effort to catch up over some dinner. The food, which is spectacular, is always changing, so it doesn’t ever get boring. The drinks are reasonably priced, the crowd is massive, and the faces are both familiar and unfamiliar (thank god). Representing the bar is Greyson Jackson, a dancer from Boardwalk. Richard Anthony, a member of the 501 nonprofit social service SunServe, will be his partner. “We’re doing a classic ballroom dance,” Jackson tells us. “I’m very excited that I was included in the competition. It serves as a confirmation for me. It means my dancing at Boardwalk has finally paid off. It’s nice to know that people believe in you.” Watch out competitors, because Jackson has some actual training. “I have over 10 years of dance training,” he says, “specifically ballet, modern/contemporary and hip-hop.”

April 16, 2014

Sasha

Discotekka is one of downtown Miami’s hottest night clubs. It brings in droves of hunky latinos, raves, foam parties, blackout parties, and everything in between. The club is located in the heart of downtown Miami, and is often referred to as the “Best Saturday night in town.” It isn’t hard to see why, as it’s certainly one of the biggest. Different rooms inside of the club give of very different vibes: Perhaps one is playing Salsa or Reggaeton, while the other two play different forms of electronic music. There’s really something for everyone. Representing one of Miami’s biggest gay hangouts is Sasha Lords. Lords has performed at a number of clubs, including The Manor (on Friday nights), Mekka and Palace Bar. Lords has also been crowned Miss Noche Latina, and has taken place in the Miss Florida Pageant as well.

Island City Art Walk

The grandest night of the week happens on Thursdays when George’s Alibi unleashes its wildest monster: $3 long island ice tea. Served in a mason jar, the $3 long island ice tea wreaks havoc on any person who indulges in its sweet yet ferocious charms. By midnight on these infamous Thursdays, an Alibi Thirsty Thursday guest is usually wandering around the minimall parking lot, stumbling as less drunk friends try holding him/her up. More drinks may be consumed at this point, and said guest is now comatose in a corner. The next morning a hangover and missed workday lead to questions like “Was it all worth it?” The answer: yes. 9 p.m. George’s Alibi. 2266 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

Most people walking along The Drive are looking for a drink or a roll in the hay. For one night a month, though, Island City Art Walk attempts to bring a bit of culture to the whole Wilton Drive affair. Local, national, and international talent present their work during this monthly event. All mediums are featured, including art installations, traditional painting, sculpture, and photography. This month’s featured artist is Lynn Dolan and the work “Summer Awakened.” With 7 galleries and numerous business sponsors, the Wilton Manors’ Art and Entertainment District is growing rapidly. This event showcases the new motif of The Drive: Art+Commerce. 7 p.m. Wilton Dr (various locations), Wilton Manors, 33305.

LIGHT A FIRE UNDER YOUR WORKOUTS BY TOM BONANTI

T

here is no need for workouts to become boring. Likewise, no one should ever throw in the towel if a fitness regime isn’t achieving the desired results. Every fitness enthusiast or body builder hits a brick wall occasionally, but perseverance is the key to success in any endeavor. Journaling your workouts at the gym, finding a reliable workout partner, hiring a personal trainer and even doing some research on the internet can help you come up with fresh techniques for your exercise program. This week let me share with you a few dynamite techniques that are sure to set some major fire under those springtime workouts. Get ready to feel the burn! “Superset” is a widely misused term. Technically, a superset is when you train two opposing muscle groups (i.e. biceps versus triceps,

back versus chest, quads versus hamstrings, etc.) with only a small break between exercises. For example, you may do a set of flat bench dumbbell I’m not talking attitude, I’m referring to exhaustion, then move to a set of presses for chest, then move quickly to your reps! his everyday meatloaf is made with lean ground beef. Serve mashed potatoes or pasta with this meatloaf, along with sliced tomatoes or your favorite veggies for a delicious meal.

• 2 tablespoons butter • 8 ounces sliced mushrooms • 1 cup chopped onion • 1 cup thinly sliced celery • 3 shredded carrots • 2 tablespoons water • 2 lbs ground beef (85% to 90% lean) • 1/2 cup flour • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme

In a pan, melt butter over medium heat; add mushrooms, onion, celery, carrots, and water. Heat to boiling; cover and cook for 8 minutes, or until vegetables are just tender-crisp. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, flour, salt, thyme, parsley, and the cooked vegetables. Mix gently and shape into a loaf on a greased, shallow baking pan (with sides). Bake the meatloaf at 350° for about 1 hour to 1 hour and 10 minutes, or until loaf is browned. You are a chef.

THE CRAZY POTATO Fresh Peruvian Food That You Need to Try

hough The Crazy Potato sounds like some sort of a fry spot, it’s anything but. I’d never had Peruvian food before walking through the restaurant’s doors, so I had no expectations (and no idea what I was about to consume). The staff – who by the way were extremely attentive and polite – seated us right away, and gave us some ideas for our entrees. As soon as she said the word ceviche, I was sold. I knew this was going to be my kind of food, and o-m-g was I right. We started our meal with a Causa Tasting ($16.95), which is a selection of three different causas: Crab Meat, Pulpo Olivo and Nikei. I can now confidently say that causa is my new favorite food. Essentially, causa is a layered dish made from chilled, blended potatoes (like a potato pancake but not fried), with various fillings or toppings. They can be made from all varieties of potatoes, and usually include a mixture of ingredients to give it the right flavor. The Crab Meat causa was made from a beautiful purple potato, with avocado, quail egg, rocoto sauce and cilantro

oil. It was exotic-looking, with a fantastic garnish and presentation. The flavor (of course) was just as amazing. The Pulp Olivo causa contained grilled octopus, peruvian black olives, red pepper, corn and onions and was placed atop a yellow potato causa of avocado puree with a rocoto huancaina (cream) sauce. Lastly, the Nikei contained tuna tartar atop a yellow potato causa, with rocoto huancaina sauce as well as Japanese nori and wontons. Next came the Ceviche Pescado ($11.95), which was made with fresh fish, marinated in freshly squeezed lime juice, sweet potato, red onions and yellow pepper. It was probably one of the best ceviche’s I’ve had in the area. Lomo Saltado ($12.95) is a dish made with sauteed steak flambe, with tomatoes, onions and soy sauce, served over a bed of rice and fries. Yes, it’s a lot of carbs. Yes, it was filling. Yes, it was delicious. This newly-opened Peruvian restaurant is a spot to watch. It’s fresh, affordable, exotic and just a breath of fresh air. We’ll be back for sure! The next time you stop in, tell them Florida Agenda sent you.

…that’s interesting. I know, right? Out of all of the things that are in the show, the average relationship is what is fictionalized [laughs]? Really terrible, I know. But the original intention was to tell my story and not to hide it.

April 16, 2014

Florida Agenda: The autobiographical nature of Have I Got a Girl For You is immediately obvious when the main character is named Josh. Was it always your plan to call the character Josh or had you considered other names? Josh Mesnik: Yeah, it never even occurred to me to call him anything else. The show is my story and I don’t pretend that it’s not. Although there have been a few elements that needed to be fictionalized. The relationship story is a conglomerate of a couple different things; that’s probably the one that has become the most fictionalized…

Josh is, in fact, also called Christian and Moishe – names that both negate and accentuate his heritage.

sland City Stage has a hit on its hands. The world premiere of Josh Mesnik’s sex romp Have I Got a Girl For You is packing in audiences from all across the region (hello, Boca!) and beyond. Deservedly so, Have I Got a Girl For You is the kind of comedy that has something for everyone and is sure to keep every audience member in stitches while some of the cast parades around in barely a stitch of clothing. The tawdry tale of Josh (Mike Westrich), a newly sober gay man in his late 20s, who takes a job booking hookers at a South Florida escort agency, and finds himself tangled in a wanton web of hilarious situations. I spoke with the man behind the true story, John Mesnik, about all of gritty details.

Scene from Have I Got a Girl for You Culturally, I identify as Jewish. I’m from a mixed marriage, but I was raised Jewish. A lot of my humor is a tip of the hat to the Borscht Belt humor with, hopefully, a new twist. That’s always been part of my vernacular and how I function. The Christian name comes along because everyone has a double name in the agency. I’m glad you mentioned the humor in Have I Got a Girl For You because it’s delightful, combining camp and smut with the greatest of ease. Who are some of your other comedy influences? As far as playwrights go, Nicky Silver and (Christopher) Durang are my biggest influences. Aaron Sorkin’s a big influence of mine. I like the way that his dialogue flies. Don’t get me wrong – I just named three massive playwrights that have trickled down (on me) slightly. I like to write in a naturalistic pattern. There are also very strong rhythms to Sorkin’s style and I try to write that way as well. I try to write where, on the page, the actor can get a sense of hearing it. That’s what I’ve been told. That comes from my background, starting as a performer and having a good ear. Dialogue, for me, is the easy part. Structure is another thing.

I was surprised by the way the escorts were portrayed as being racist. All real. Did that surprise you the first time you heard it? Yes. That’s why that scene is there. To say that every single one (was), no, but a lot of the girls had a good amount of inherent racism. We screened our clients, but a lot of the times I didn’t know what they looked like. We dealt with all businessmen and for me, a businessman is a businessman. There were people of any sort of race that I wasn’t going to book who don’t sound like they’re up to the standards of the agency, but that had nothing to do with race. Sobriety and recovery plays a large role in Have I Got a Girl For You. I’ve been sober for nine years. I originally came down to Florida to get sober. I didn’t know that I could. I had no intention to be sober for as long as I am. It just worked out that way with a lot of hard work. It was the best thing I ever did in my life, but I also like to say that I wouldn’t have done it unless I absolutely had to. My life had gotten out of control. Drugs and alcohol had taken over. I definitely saw the fatal

Have I Got a Girl For You has a South Florida setting. It took place down here so it was always going to be down here, no matter where it’s performed. There’s really only one joke that is locally specific – the one about Wilton Manors – that would probably be tweaked outside of here. Even as the South Florida view outside of the country works, it works as a setting. Especially when you say it’s an escort agency set in Boca Raton – that’s got national recognition, no matter where it’s playing. It’s really great that it’s having its premiere full-production down here and it’s a local sort of thing. We’re very excited and there are a lot of prospects on the piece. That’s definitely helped us on the press perspective as well. Island City Stage was recently awarded six Carbonell Awards, as well as a sizable grant from the John C. Graves Charitable Fund of the Community Foundation of Broward. What does it mean to you to be affiliated with such an honored theater company? It means a lot. Michael Leeds, the co-artistic director with Andy Rogow, had directed me quite a few years ago. That’s where I originally met Michael. When all of this was happening with the show and the workshop production at the Fringe Festival – it’s a great opportunity, but it’s not a full-production – he had heard about it and asked for a script. When he read it he loved the writing and the story. Michael has been there since day 12, maybe not day one [laughs], so his support and belief throughout the whole process has been tremendous.
