call home.” Executive director for Equality Florida, Nadine Smith, released a statement in which she expressed concern for same-sex parent helmed families and their right to be treated equally. “The law should treat all families fairly. Florida’s marriage ban makes it harder for same-sex couples to take care of one another and protect their children,” said Smith in a statement. “We are confident when we have our day in court Florida will stand with other courts across the country in concluding these laws violate the basic principles of fairness and equality for all.”

iami, FL – At the end of last week, the plaintiffs challenging the State of Florida’s refusal to permit same-sex couples to marry asked a state court to rule that the state’s ban on marriage equality is unconstitutional. In the motion, the six couples and Equality Florida Institute argue that Florida’s ban on marriage equality violates the Equal Protection and Due Process Clauses of the United States Constitution, according to a statement made by Equality Florida. The couples are from Miami and the surrounding area, with four of the couples raising children, and another couple with an adult child and two grandchildren. The couples are as follows: Catherina Pareto and Karla Arguello; Dr. Juan Carlos Rodriguez and David Price; Vanessa and Melanie Alenier; Todd and Jeff Delmay; Summer Greene and Pamela Faerber; and Don Price Johnston and Jorge Isaias Diaz. They are represented by the law firm Carlton Fields Jorden Burt, Elizabeth F. Schwartz, Mary B. Meeks, and the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR). “The couples’ motion filed today asserts that Florida’s marriage ban cannot stand in light of the Supreme Court’s ruling last June that the federal ‘Defense of Marriage Act’ violates the federal constitutional guarantees of equal protection and due process,” the statement reads. “The couples’ papers note that every court to consider these federal constitutional claims since last summer’s Supreme Court decision has ruled in favor of the freedom to marry for same-sex couples. This includes federal courts in Utah, Ohio, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Illinois, Michigan, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.” Dr. Rodriguez and his partner David Price, are particularly worried about their future here in Florida, a place they call home. “Florida is our home and it scares us that in times of crisis we won’t have the security that other couples enjoy because the state does not allow us to share in the responsibilities and protections of marriage,” said Dr. Rodriguez. “I look forward to the day we will be able to marry before our family and friends in the state we

Crist Leads Scott in New Poll: Majority of Florida Voters Support Gay Marriage

TONY FOWLER

Tallahassee, FL – Republican Gov. Rick Scott is now officially trailing former Gov. Charlie Crist by 10 points, according to a new poll. Released by Quinnipiac University, the poll shows Crist leading Scott 48 percent to 38 percent. The poll also found that 53 percent do not think

Scott deserves a second term as governor, with 42 percent approving his current job. The poll also found majority of Florida voters support same-sex marriage, with 56 percent in favor and 39 percent opposed. In women, the support for same-sex marriage was even higher, with 57 percent in favor, compared to the 55 percent of men. Every age group that was polled supported same-sex marriage, sans voters over 65, who were 45 percent in favor with 49 percent opposed.

Tallahassee, FL – A federal judge and U.S. Appeals court have rejected Mark “Chris” Sevier’s motion to intervene in Florida’s same-sex marriage case in order to marry his “porn-filled Apple computer,” according to a statement made by Sevier, reported by Miami New Times. Sevier says in the statement that if gays “have the right to marry their object of sexual desire, even if they lack corresponding sexual parts, then I should have the right to marry my preferred sexual object.” His 24-page filing states that after a while, Sevier began to prefer sex with his computer rather than the real thing. “Over time, I began preferring sex with my computer over sex with real women,” he stated. “Naturally, I ‘fell in

love’ with my computer and preferred having sex with it over all other persons or things, as a result of classic conditioning upon orgasm.” Judge Robert Hinkle stepped in to squash the motion, stating that it has no place in the lawsuit for marriage equality. “Chris Sevier has moved to intervene, apparently asserting he wishes to marry his computer,” Juge Robert Hinkle wrote in a statmenet. “Perhaps the motion is satirical. Or perhaps it is only removed from reality. Either way, the motion has no place in this lawsuit.” Sevier is now attempting to intervene in Utah’s battle for marriage equality. “Those of us whose sexual orientation has been classically conditioned upon orgasm through the staight forward science of dopamine to prefer sex with inanimate objects and animals do not have public support, like the gays, so we are especially vulnerable here,” he wrote in a new 50 page brief for his intervention in Utah.

LAUNCH FOR ‘HIDING INSIDE THE BASELINE’ Florida Agenda and Guy Magazine publisher Bobb Blair celebrated the launch of his newly released autobiography, Hiding Inside the Baseline, at a jam-packed Sidelines Sports & Video Bar in Wilton Manors on May 1. The event was a who’s who of Ft. Lauderdale VIPs; City commissioner Dean Trantalis, former legendary publisher Brad Casey, entrepeneur and philanthropist Bob DeBenedictis and Dr. Alan Shafer were among the many who attended the launch. A very heartfelt speech was given by Blair about how the many years spent in Wilton Manors has been extremely special and made for a wondering coming out process for him. He also went on to thank his partner, Brian Neal, for his dedication to their nonprofit, the Brian Neal Fitness and Health Foundation, which provides health and wellness benefits for people who have been affected by HIV/AIDS. Blair added that he and Neal both want to continue to do great things for the community, for many years to come.

oscow, Russia – The Kremlin has expanded its topsecret black list of Americans who are banned from Russia, according to an exclusive report from The Daily Beast. “The names of the specific bundlers remains a secret, but a focus was put on those with ties to the gay and lesbian community; it’s a reflection of the ongoing fight between the Kremlin and the White House over Russia’s laws punishing the promotion of LGBT ‘propaganda,’” the report reads. “The only way a bundler or lawmaker can determine if he or she is on the sanctions list is to apply for a visa to visit Russia. If the visa is rejected without explanation, the applicant is on the list.” The alleged list includes President Obama campaign fundraisers that were tied to the gay community,

according to “diplomatic sources” that spoke to The Daily Beast. The list was rumored to have been expanded in retaliation to the Obama administration’s similar black list in March, which included key business associates of Russian President Vladimiar Putin.

Columbia, MO – A Boone County judge has granted what is being called the first same-sex divorce in Missouri, which currently has a constitutional amendment against recognizing same-sex marriages. In the ruling, Boone County Circuit Judge Leslie Schneider granted the divorce for Samantha and Dena Latimer, who married in Massachusetts in 2009 while living in Columbia, Missouri. The judge ruled that under the doctrine of “comity,” a Missouri court can recognize the law of where the marriage was performed for “the limited purpose of granting equitable relief,” according to a report by the Columbia Tribune. Lambda Legal representative Christopher Clark told the Tribune that while this is the first case in Missouri, it’s bound to happen. “Same-sex couples are like everybody else in that they have relationships that sometimes don’t work out,” Clark said to the Tribune.

Olympia, WA – The Washington State Supreme Court welcomed their first openly LGBT, Latina, and Asian-American woman to the high court last week – Mary Yu. Yu, a 57-year-old lesbian, worked for the past 14 years as a King County Superior Court justice, reelected to the seat four times in a row. A Chicago native whose parents came from Mexico and China, Yu is the first openly gay person to sit on the state’s highest court, in addition to being the first Latina and the first Asian-American. “Judge Yu has distinguished herself throughout her career as someone of great intellect, dedication and compassion,” Governor Jay Inslee said in an announcement on Thursday. “She has brought to her work and to her life a never-wavering commitment to ensuring justice for everyone. Her appointment today is a moment all Washingtonians can be proud of.” Yu says that she will never forget where she came from, and will do all that she can to make sure that justice served. “Trial court judges, at every level of court, are the workhorses of our system of justice,” said Yu in a press release. “I am proud to come from their ranks and will do all that I can to remember that the trial court

remains the place where the law is actually applied to everyday life.” Yu is scheduled to be sworn in later this month.

hether under the influence or not, no one drives with the intention of killing another human being. But that’s what happened to Mario Careaga, who has been convicted for DUI manslaughter of Miami Heat dancer Nancy Lopez-Ruiz in 2010. One controversy in Mr. Careaga’s case comes in accusations that one of the jurors who convicted him uttered a homophobic remark during the legal proceedings. If true, this would call into question whether Mr. Careaga was convicted for a crime or for being gay. I completely understand the emotional aspect of having a friend or relative sentenced to a prison term for an “accidental” crime. The truth is that such a conviction punishes not only the accused, but all those who are close to him. It’s a difficult time for all who are close to the case, not the least of whom is the family of the victim. There are no “winners” in such a case. Even though the evidence of jury prejudice presented by Mario Careaga’s attorney was not enough to convince Broward Circuit Judge Ilona M. Holmes to declare a mistrial, the objections to the conviction, particularly in the LGBT press, continues. There is great truth in what Mario Careaga’s partner, who was in the car when the accident happened, told NBC News — “Bad things happen to good people.” Most of us who live in South Florida have been there. We have known someone, been close to someone who had to spend time in jail for a DUI conviction. Adding to the sense of tragedy is that, according to all who have known Mr. Careaga, he seems to be a “kind and decent man.” While many people are heartbroken over this case, we all have an obligation to abide by the law. I’m also all too aware of those who are so against drinking and driving that they refuse to even meet me if they know another friend who has a DUI record will be in the same room. This supposed “accidental” crime is, to them, unforgiveable. In their minds, being a nice guy, or being gay, does not excuse anyone. But forgiveness must come at some point. Not so much for the sake of the offender, but for those who are close to him, who also serve a sentence in a figurative sense. Yes, the law is there to send a message of prevention. But the message of “don’t drink and drive” is least likely to get through to those who are easily affected by a small amount of alcohol in their system. In the case of my friend who ended up spending 30 days in jail on a DUI conviction, just a couple of beers was enough to totally alter his judgment and the way he acted. Mr. Careaga is reported to have had only two “drinks” on the day he killed Nancy Lopez-Ruiz. The operative word here is “only.”

EDITOR

It is important for us all to know our own limitations. How much is too much is the question we must constantly be asking ourselves. It is also this question that I had hoped Judge Holmes would have kept in mind at Mr. Careaga’s sentencing hearing this week. I see the need for justice, but I fail to see the benefit to society to have one more life destroyed by this incident. But Judge Holmes seemed to have neither a sense of proper measure nor leniency, as so many prominent witnesses recommended on Mr. Careaga’s behalf. She sentenced him to the maximum allowed by law — 15 years. If Mr. Careaga were living in the State of Oklahoma, he would have gotten one year in prison as the maximum sentence allowed for the same conviction. If he had lived in Washington State, he could have gone to prison for the rest of his life. But even in that state, the average sentence for vehicular homicide is three years. How is it that there is such a wide variety of penalties for the same act within the same country? One must conclude that it depends on the circumstances of each case. And what sets this case apart is that it is a high profile case. And while we are on the subject, does it strike anyone as odd that Florida, which seems to have such an unforgiving sentencing for vehicular manslaughter, is the same state that has a special “Stand Your Ground” law to pre-excuse anyone who wants to shoot and kill somebody for real or imagined reasons? It seems to be a state with a very mixed-up value for human life. What is barely essential in sentencing Mario Careaga, and hopefully in all cases, is not sympathy or even leniency, but a sense of fairness, balance and equality. Considering that we have had a First Lady in the White House, Laura Bush, who is also allegedly guilty of vehicular manslaughter, but never charged and never arrested (in fact, the records of her case have been expunged by the State of Texas), we may well ask, “Where is the justice?”

WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH PrEP?

SPECIAL FLORIDA AGENDA REPORT

BY GRANT JAMES

with subjects receiving treatment until the end of the year this year. Videos were turned off during this portion of the discussion as the results for the Miami demo have yet to be published. (It’s important to know that the drug was first administered in 2012, so long-term results have yet to be determined.) A Q&A portion of the evening gave locals the opportunity to ask questions and voice concerns. While most consisted of worries about whether the drug could interfere with other prescription drugs, one concern wasn’t being voiced. “Are there any concerns that the virus may become resistant to the drug over time?” we asked. A pharmaceutical rep informed us that while the studies are ongoing, there has been no evidence thus far that implies that the virus would mutate and become resistant to the drug. As the studies are ongoing (and very recent) there are still many unanswered questions. For now, South Florida residents will have to use their own judgement (and advice from a doctor) to decide whether PrEP is right for them. For more in PrEP, visit the Center for Disease Control’s official page for the pill at www.cdc. gov/hiv/basics/prep.html

May 7, 2014

ilton Manors, FL – Last week, a crucial meeting was held at The Pride Center at Equality Park. The parking lot was filled with a plethora of cars, and finding a seat was almost impossible. First and foremost, PrEP is not the same as PEP. PrEP, a pre-exposure prophylaxis, is used as a preventative measure for people who are risk of contracting HIV. It is meant to be used consistently, as opposed to PEP, which is meant to be taken within 72 hours of a possible (or definite) exposure to the virus. PrEP is not meant to be taken by someone who is HIV positive. One myth discussed was that PrEP simply “doesn’t work.” This is apparently a common concern, but the panelists for the event (which included a pharmaceutical rep for PrEP, two doctors, a social services manager and a man who has been taking the pill for an extended amount of time) were quick to provide the statistics. There has been a reported 99 percent success rate against the virus when taking PrEP consistently, and 90 percent if the person uses the drug 4 times a week (as opposed to daily). The side effects reported so far have been minimal, with most cases diminishing or vanishing completely over time. “For the first week or two, I felt a little bloated, like I was full, but that was it,” said Robbie, a participant in the study. Another myth discussed was that PrEP might not be readily available. Panelists told the attendees that they are in fact able to obtain the pill from their primary doctor via prescription. Though most health care programs cover PrEP, the sticker price is a whopping $1800 per month. A PrEP Demo performed in Miami is ongoing,

Becoming Dr. Ruth

Patti LuPone Wanted!

Dr. Ruth Westhelmer is most famous for doling out advice to concerned, sexually frustrated couples. Her life story revolves around much more than just her profession, though. In “Becoming Dr. Ruth,” TV star Debra Jo Rupp (That 70’s Show) becomes Karola Ruth Siegel and tells the story of her complicated and action-packed life: from surviving the Holocaust to joining the Israeli Haganah as a sniper, to receiving her doctorate and becoming a household name as America’s favorite sex therapist. Straight from its critically acclaimed, New York run, “Becoming Dr. Ruth” plays tonight in Fort Lauderdale. 8 p.m. Parker Playhouse. 707 NE 8th St, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.

Patti LuPone—theatrical stage legend and recent Fort Lauderdale performer—has been the subject of many gay musical theater enthusiasts for a number of years. While LuPone embodies a diva-esque personality, she houses the voice and talent to back it up. Once during her muchheralded performance of Mama Rose in “Gypsy,” Lupone lashed out against the audience because they kept taking pictures of her. Because of all this hilarious drama, actors like Ben Rimalower adore Patti LuPone. Tonight, Mr. Rimalower performs his one-man show, “Patti Issues,” in which a young gay boy finds solace from his family turmoil in the transformative voice of Patti LuPone. The much-heralded play makes its debut

in South Florida this weekend. 8 p.m. The Cabaret South Beach. 233 12th St, Miami Beach, 33139.

The Wanted British boy band group The Wanted is cute, Disney-ready, and a tween girl’s favorite pop group. They had a mild hit two years ago with the radio-friendly Glad You Came. Recent hits include We Own the Night, All Time Low, and Gold Forever. They’ve been nominated for a multitude of Teen Choice Awards yet have come up empty-handed each time. With more time and effort at perfecting their craft, they may be able to finally win the highly coveted Teen Choice Award. 9 p.m. Filmore Miami Beach. 1700 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, 33139.

SUNDAY 5/11

Rob Schneider

Mother’s Day at Lips

Some may call him the poor man’s Adam Sandler, and there’s certainly a lot of evidence to support that claim (the films The Animal and Deuce Bigalow are mostly known for their plethora of Golden Raspberry Award nominations). Even so, Rob Schneider is a popular, stalwart entertainer. When not fighting with film critics (like the late Roger Ebert), Schneider spends his time performing stand-up, driving environmentally friendly cars, and outspokenly advocating against vaccination practices. Tonight, he entertains a South Floridian audience in West Palm Beach. 8 p.m. Palm Beach Improv. 550 S Rosemary Ave, West Palm Beach, 33401.

This Mother’s Day, Lips offers something any accepting mother of a homosexual would enjoy— brunch and dinner with the DIVAS! For the dinner, Mom enjoys a complimentary glass of wine. If choosing brunch, deals on unlimited mimosas, champagne, and bloody marys will surely satiate a mother’s early morning quench for alcohol. While enjoying these delicious meals, a bevy of drag queens entertain with raunchy and pitch perfect imitations of everyone’s favorite gay icons. From Bette to Barbara, the show’s outpouring of love and cattiness never stops! 11 a.m. & 7 p.m. Lips. 1421 Oakland Park Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33334.

Thaïs

MONDAY 5/12 STEPHEN KUTTNER

Ancient Egypt is the setting for this classic opera. In “Thaïs,” a beautiful and seductive courtesan is pitted against a virtuous and pious monk. Thanael, a Cenobite monk, tries to convert Thaïs to Christianity, but discovers too late that his obsession is rooted in lust. Jules Massenet’s masterpiece is described often as having a sort of religious eroticism. It includes the famous aria “Dis-moi-que je suis belle” and the moving orchestral “Meditation.” 7 p.m. Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. 1300 Biscayne Blvd, Miami Beach, 33132.

WEDNESDAY 5/14

Men’s Life Drawing It may have been a cheesy signal of romantic tension in the film “Titanic,” but drawing a nude model does have its appeal. For one, the artist is able to stare at a nude form for lengthy periods of time. For another, it’s interesting watching the model maintain said nude pose. Getting in touch with your artistic side isn’t all that bad either. All experience levels are welcomed at the Men’s Life Drawing classes, but remember to bring art supplies for both drawing and painting (including charcoal, pencil, or watercolor). Guest artists from the community will also be in attendance at this monthly event. 7 p.m. Push Fitness. 1098 NE 45th St, Oakland Park, 33334.

FRIDAY 5/9 On Friday, the party moves to Club Fort Lauderdale for a party known simply as “Wet n’ Wild.” This private men’s club boasts a huge pool, outdoor whirlpool and showers, as well as a sauna, steam room and gym. Relax or get a little wild at this daytime event, beginning at noon. (Club Fort Lauderdale – 10 NW 5th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33311.) BEACHBEAR WEEKEND PHOTOS COURTESY OF ATLASMEN.COM

Hopefully, you saved your energy, because the after party is taking place at Slammer 321. Beginning at 1 a.m., bears will flock to this men’s private club, where you can BYOB and really let loose. (Slammer 321 – 321 W Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.)

Your Sunday is meant to be somewhat lazy, so thankfully Sunday’s events don’t begin until 5 p.m. at Hunters. Hairy, masculine GoGo dancers will be dancing all evening for your pleasure, so make sure to bring those singles. Afterward, head to Scandals for a Western-themed night of fun, starting at 9 p.m. Sammer 321 will host another after hours event starting at 1 a.m. as well.

SATURDAY 5/10 Starting at 4 p.m. on Saturday, the official host hotel for the weekend, Courtyard Marriott Fort Lauderdale, will host a Tea Dance. This is your chance to relax poolside! This event is free to the public and features music by DJ Barry Huffine. (Courtyard Marriott – 440 Seabreeze Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33316.)

THE FITNESS MAN

THE TIME FOR TERRIFIC TRICEPS BY PETER JACKSON, CPT • PHOTOGRAPHY BY TOBY BLADES (TOBYSPHOTOS.COM) The triceps brachii (Latin for “three-headed arm muscle”) are located at the back of your arm on the opposite side of the biceps and actually make up about two-thirds of the muscle in your arms. Any movement involving straightening your arm uses the triceps. While bulging biceps are always impressive, it is your triceps that will add size and make your arms look massive. Guys with well-developed triceps typically boast a

horseshoe-shape ridge of muscle which is truly a thing of beauty! There are three distinct muscles in the triceps which all join together at the elbow: the lateral head (the outer area), the long head (the inner area and the largest of the three) and the medial head (mostly covered by the lateral and long heads). It’s important to understand that most upper

OVER-HEAD ROPE EXTENSIONS – This is a great warm-up exercise for the triceps and the elbow joints. This can also be useful when trying to add a little more mass or detail to the long head of the triceps, because of the triceps are fully stretched when in this position. Stand in front of a high cable pulley, with a rope attachment and face away from the weight stack. Grasp the rope and take two large steps forward. Lean down with upper body until parallel with the floor and remain in this position throughout the duration of the exercise.

CLOSE GRIP BENCH PRESS – TThis is another effective mass-building exercise for the long head of the triceps. Lie on a flat bench and take a narrow grip (slightly narrower than shoulder width) on the bar and press the bar to full extension, fully contracting the triceps. Peter Jackson is a fitness and nutrition coach and the founder of Push Fitness known for his cutting-edge fitness and fat-loss programs for individuals, couples and small groups. body exercises require the use of your arm muscles. Pushing movements (such as the bench press), in particular, recruit the triceps to allow you to straighten your arms (while pulling movements, such as the cable row, recruit your biceps). So by default, when you are pushing heavy weight your triceps are simultaneously getting a good workout. Here, Push Fitness client ROB DELEHANTY demonstrates 4 terrific exercises to build the triceps.

LYING TRICEP EXTENSIONS A.K.A. SKULL CRUSHERS – This is a great warm-up exercise for the triceps and the elbow joints.

CABLE PRESS DOWNS – Select one of a variety of grips-v-bar, cambered bar or straight bar. Mixing it up from session to session will keep your muscles from becoming conditioned to the same movement week to week and more importantly, keep you packing on the mass! Excellent for mass and detail! Stand one step back from the cable and lean forward, maintaining an arch in the back and keep the knees slightly bent. This will reduce the amount of stress to the abdominal muscles during the motion and will enable you to place maximum tension on the triceps.

CHICAGO: YOUR KIND OF TOWN

TRAVEL

BY RICK KARLIN

“C

ity of Big Shoulders”, “Hog Butcher to the World”, “The Windy City” and “Second City” and the less charitable “Mistake by the Lake.” Chicago has more aliases than Sean “Puffy” “Puff Daddy” Combs. Some it deserves; it was the second largest city in America at one time. Some are dated (it’s no longer the meatpacking empire it once was) and some are right for the wrong reasons (Windy City refers to its long-winded politicians, not the climate, although it can be very cold and breezy). For five months of the year it is barely tolerable unless you have Nordic or Eskimo blood in your veins. For three months of the year the weather is unpredictable, it can be sunny and warm, then drop 50 degrees in a matter of hours. But, for four months of the year, it is a glorious place to be. Even then, the summer weather can vary from the balmy 80s to blisteringly hot 100º plus days, but for the most part the weather is lovely from late June through September. Chicagoans take advantage of the lovely weather and spectacular lakefront during that time and there’s no reason you shouldn’t do so as well. Every weekend there are nearly a dozen festivals from which to choose. Lakefront parks and beaches are spotlessly clean, free and run nearly the entire length of the city. There are dining and cultural options too numerous to count. If you’re into music there are the world-renowned music fests; Lollapalooza (Aug. 1-3), Pitchfork (July 18-20), Wavefront (July 5-7), Bluesfest (June 13-15), Jazzfest (Aug. 28-31), Square Roots folk Music Fest (July 11-13), African/Caribbean International Festival (July 3-6) and Taste of Chicago (July 9-13) which combines the best food in Chicago with top music acts. Among some of the other neighborhood festivals worth checking out are; the 30th annual Belmont-Sheffield Music Festival and Printers Row Lit Fest (both June 7 -8), the 40th annual Wells Street Art Festival (June 14-15), Gospel Music Festival (June 27-29), Craft Beer Festival (July 19-20), Chinatown Summer Fair (July 20), Fiesta del Sol (July 31-Aug. 3), FestaItaliana (Aug.

14-17), Remix Chicago: Chicago’s recycled art fair (Aug. 30-31), Chicago Gourmet (Sept. 26-28) and, of course, Pride Fest (June 21-22) and the Pride Parade (June 29.) For a complete list of weekly festivals, head over to choosechicago.com. For culture vultures you couldn’t pick a better year to visit Chicago as a number of cultural organizations are celebrating significant anniversaries. It’s the 80th season of Grant Park Music Festival, the 60th anniversary of the Lyric Opera, Second City’s 55th anniversary and the 125th anniversary of the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio. For sports fans, Wrigley Field, home of the Cubs, is celebrating its centennial, so its annual GLBT day, “Out at Wrigley” on July 12 will be especially significant. BTW, the Chicago Cubs is the only professional sports team owned by an openly GLBT person. Wrigley Field is only steps away from Northalsted, also known as Boystown, which was recently named “the best gay neighborhood in the world” by Out Traveler Magazine. A collection of fabulous shops, delectable restaurants and famous

nightlife (30 bars and clubs in less than one mile stretch!), NortHalsted is also home to The Legacy Project, the world’s only outdoor walking GLBT museum. The biggest party of the year is Market Days (Aug. 9-10), when the ultra-gay fest welcomes millions of people (that’s not an exaggeration!) to the hood. Chicago’s other predominantly GLBT neighborhood, the formerly primarily Swedish enclave of Andersonville, is just a few miles to the north and kicks off the summer festival season with its Midsommarfest (June 6-8). If Lakeview’s NortHalsted region is Boystown, then Andersonville could rightly be called “Man-dersonville” or “Woman-dersonville” as it is popular with more established male and lesbian couples. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that means it’s quiet and sedate. Andersonville which borders Uptown and Edgewater, the tres gay lakefront neighborhoods where the majority of Chicago GLBT community choose to live, is just vibrant as Boystown. Uptown is a little grittier and more urban and its primary festival, Windy City RibFest (July 4-6) draws a mixed crowd.

Edgewater’s big celebration is Edgefest (Aug. 2-3) and, of course, every weekend is a party at the predominantly gay Osterman Beach (aka Hollywood Beach) right across from the historic Edgewater Beach Apartments. Round trip airfares to Chicago from Fort Lauderdale can usually be found for less than $300. Chicago has no shortage of four and five star hotels, but if you prefer to stay “in the ‘hood,” consider Villa Toscana - a Victorian B&B, the Best Western Hawthorne Terrace, City Suites Hotel, the Majestic Hotel and the Days Inn on Diversey Ave., all located in or near Boystown. The Ashland Arms is a leather guest house and Magnolia Studios is a B&B, both located in Edgewater. For those on a strict budget, the Chicago Getaway Hostel, is in Boystown-adjacent (and very safe,) Lincoln Park. For more information on lodging, cultural attractions and GLBT events throughout Chicago’s summer and early fall, check out www.choosechicago.com/articles/view/ LGBT-Chicago/949

DELICIOUS CRÊPE STUFFING

BY CHEF JEAN DOHERTY

SUBMITTED PHOTO

Y

ou were asking me about a good filling for the Crêpes we made last week. This is a savory one. (See the recipe for crêpes online: floridaagenda.com/2014/04/30/crepes/)

• 6 slices bacon • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter • 1/2 pound fresh mushrooms, sliced • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour • 1 cup milk • 1 (10 ounce) package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

May 7, 2014

• Salt and pepper to taste

Place bacon in a frying pan. Cook over medium-high heat until evenly brown. Drain, crumble and set aside. Reserve about 1 tablespoon drippings, add 1 tablespoon butter, and then sauté the mushrooms. In a separate saucepan, melt 3 tablespoons butter over medium heat. Whisk in 1/4 cup flour, stirring constantly, until a smooth paste is formed. Gradually stir in 1 cup milk, stirring constantly until a smooth thick gravy is formed. ( this is called a Béchamel Sauce) Add bacon, mushrooms, spinach, parsley, Parmesan cheese, salt and pepper. Let cook until somewhat thick, about 8 minutes. Fill each crepe with this delicious filling, roll up, fold up or pile up…. You are the chef.

Although born in Dublin, Ireland, Chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.
