ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A man accused of drugging, torturing and murdering two gay men back in 2003 was arraigned on Monday. Scott Schweickert, 48, is already serving 40 years on charges related to the case. A grand jury recently indicted Schweickert for the murders of Jason Galehouse and Michael Wacholz. The two Seminole Heights men were killed on consecutive nights in 2003. Prosecutors say Schweickert lured the men back to his home after meeting them at a nightclub. Police recovered the body of Wacholtz, but Galehouse was dismembered and his body parts were scattered around the area. If convicted, Schweickert faces the death penalty.
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — Last Thursday in the early evening, officers from the Fort Lauderdale Police Department executed a surprise raid on the Boardwalk, the popular male strip club on Andrews Ave. Customers scattered into the street, as managers, bartenders and dancers were detained at the scene. Club co-owner Victor Zepka released an official statement to the Agenda concerning the event. “On Thursday, June 5, 2014, the Fort Lauderdale Police Department executed a warrant in order to detain and arrest three individuals accused of illegally selling narcotics to undercover officers. We will assist them with their investigation. If we see or hear of any dancers engaging in any illegal activity includ-
guests even more in 2015.” In addition to serving as the host hotel, Shelborne Wyndham Grand South Beach will provide the location for the Welcome Center and the sureto-sell-out pool party on the Saturday of Winter Party Festival. As one of Miami’s most celebrated beachfront resorts, Shelborne Wyndham Grand South Beach features uviews of the Atlantic Ocean in a modern, relaxed setting. Located in the heart of the Art Deco District and within walking distance to Lincoln Road and Ocean Drive, the resort allows Winter Party Festival guests to enjoy the best of what Miami Beach has to offer. Winter Party Festival 2015 plans six days of non-stop action featuring pulse-raising dance parties and welcoming receptions to sophisticated art exhibitions, all designed to celebrate the spirit of the LGBT community and its allies. Produced by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Winter Party Festival proceeds support the important work of the Task Force to build power, take action and create positive, lasting change for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their families throughout the country. A significant portion of the proceeds also funds multiple organizations serving the LGBT community in South Florida through a grant made by the Task Force to the GLBT Community Projects Fund of The Miami Foundation.

Reuters Finds Attorneys on Side of Same-Sex Marriage WASHINGTON, DC — A Reuters News Service review of more than 100 court filings during the past year shows that at least 30 of the country’s largest firms are representing challengers to state laws banning same-sex marriage. Not a single member of the Am Law 200, a commonly used ranking of the largest U.S. firms by revenue, is defending gay marriage prohibitions, according to Reuters reporter Joan Biskupic. These numbers and interviews with lawyers on both sides suggest that the legal industry has reached its “Mozilla moment,” wrote Biskupic for the news service. The Mozilla’s CEO, Brendan Eich, resigned in April after being denounced by gay marriage supporters for a donation he had made in support of California’s since-overturned gay marriage ban. Now in a similar vein, attorneys at major law firms are getting the message that if they want to litigate against gay marriage they should do so elsewhere. Earlier this year, Gene Schaerr, a partner at Winston Strawn in Washington, D.C., quit the 850-lawyer firm so he could represent his home state, Utah, in its defense of a ban on samesex marriage. Schaerr, a Mormon, told

Lauderdale for same-sex couples who want to choose our area for their destination weddings,” said Richard Gray, managing director, LGBT Market for the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau. Ignorant statements like, “Which one of you is the bride and which is the groom?” hopefully will diminish after the showcase, added Kyser, who said that nationally-known diversity trainer Doug Cureton will be on hand to offer wedding vendors etiquette hints and methods for breaking down stereotypes at a private industry professionals luncheon from noon to 1 p.m. Cureton is the founder of CreativiTEAM, Inc., a training and leadership consulting firm in Fort Lauderdale and owner of Some Men Like It Haute fashion consignment store in Wilton Manors. Kyser also will be presenting advice for planning equality-based weddings. Tickets for Gay Nuptials are $20 and can be ordered online at www.mygaywedding.org or by calling 954-3569377. All proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to The Pride Center at Equality Park, which provides a welcoming, safe space for the LGBTQ community (www.pridecenterflorida.org). WILTON MANORS, FL — Bobby Kyser, the owner of Panche Style, a Wilton Manors-based floral design and events planning firm, announced today that the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) will be the presenting sponsor of the first annual Gay Nuptials wedding showcase. The event, which will be held on August 17, 1-4 p.m. at Hagen Park Community Center, will feature 35 local vendors that offer a wide variety of wedding ceremony services to samesex couples, including venues, catering, flowers, invitations and more. “We are thrilled that the CVB understands that gay weddings are an exploding business that will bring a valuable economic impact to our community,” said Kyser. “The purpose of this event is to create an awareness of this important business opportunity as well as to increase understanding of and sensitivities to the couples seeking wedding services.” According to Bernadette Coveney Smith, the author of “The Business of Gay Weddings,” the national gay and lesbian buying power is estimated at $790 billion and gay weddings are expected to continue to grow at a rapid pace. “We are proud to be part of this upscale event, which will help educate wedding vendors and better prepare Fort

colleagues in an email that became public that he was following his “religious and family duty.” Schaerr declined to comment, as did a Winston Strawn spokeswoman, according to Biskupic. Same-sex marriage is legal in 19 of the 50 US states, and in the District of Columbia. Last June, in the milestone US v. Windsor case, the Supreme Court struck down a federal law defining marriage as between a man and a woman for purposes of federal benefits. Emboldened by that decision, gay and lesbian couples have launched at least 70 lawsuits calling for a broader right, and three cases have been heard by federal appeals courts. In many of the cases, law firms filed friend-of-the-court briefs on behalf of allies including gay-rights groups, law professors and big companies such as Amazon, Google and Starbucks. In some cases, big law firms have made a larger commitment and are representing parties to the litigation. Virtually all are working for free or at cut rates as part of their “pro bono” programs to provide legal services they deem to be in the public interest. Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, an 850-lawyer firm headquartered in Washington, DC sued the state of Texas last year on behalf of two samesex couples and has filed friend-of-thecourt briefs in the appeals cases testing Utah, Oklahoma and Virginia bans. The firm said it has donated at least 1,100 hours so far in the litigation. States defending gay marriage bans are represented by state government lawyers, but some have also turned to outside counsel. According to the Reuters review, the private attorneys who have signed up to represent states or are backing allied groups with friendof-the-court briefs are predominantly from religious and conservative organizations, such as the Alliance Defending Freedom and the Beckett Fund, or are from small law firms. Several lawyers opposed to same-sex marriage rights said they believed big firms would not litigate for that side even if attorneys asked to do so. They pointed to the example of Mozilla’s Eich as an example of the pressures being faced, Biskupic reported.

SAN DIEGO, CA — When California state assemblywoman Toni Atkins ascended to the post of Speaker of the Assembly last month, she became the first open lesbian to hold the office. Any doubt that lesbians rule the state assembly was erased during her ceremonial swearing in last Friday in San Diego during which Atkins was joined by her spouse Jennifer LeSar to take the oath of office administered by fellow lesbian Bonnie Dumanis, San Diego County District Attorney.
Atkins replaces gay former assemblyman John Perez, who resigned his post to prepare his campaign for state controller. Atkins previously served as Perez’s chief deputy for the last four years. Born in Appalachia to a poor mining family, Atkins rose from her humble roots to earn a BA degree in political science from Virginia’s Emory and Henry College and later attended the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. She was repeatedly commended for her empathy for the underprivileged during her formal swearing in ceremony at the

contacted something unknown from someone unknown…ah, well, you get the picture. Racing to see Dr. Tocci, I was prepared to throw myself supine on his waiting room floor until he examined me. Fortunately, I did not have to humiliate myself quite to that extent, but believe me when I say that practically every experience in an urologist’s office carries with it some degree of embarrassment. After giving my penis a tug or two, he had me pull up my underwear and began to write on his prescription pad. In my mind, I was prepared for a daily dose of antibiotics; so when he said, “It’s your prostate. You need to masturbate more,” I was totally caught off guard. “Masturbate…but…” I heard my mouth saying while my mind struggled to get a grip on the situation. “The prostate is like any other gland. It needs to function to stay in great health,” the good doctor lectured. “The more sex you have, the better you’ll feel.” Well, dah…no kidding, I thought. “And if you can’t have sex, masturbate once or twice a day,” he said, before adding, “or more if you like.” I bring this up now because of a recent study done in 2013 by the National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior in which men and women were asked how often they masturbated during the course of a year. The numbers were rather shocking, particularly in light of Dr. Tocci’s orders.
Just to make certain I didn’t have my instructions wrong, I pulled out the prescription, which, in theory, belonged framed on a wall in our bedroom. Yup, there it was in doctor scrawl: Masturbate one or twice a day. According to the study done through the auspices of Indiana University at Bloomington, 16.5 percent of males between the ages of 25-29 years old never masturbated at all the previous year. But wait, it gets better. For those between 30-39, 20 percent claimed to never have buffed the banana. Twenty-four percent of those 40-49 said they had not pumped the python, while 28 percent of those 50-59 claimed the same title. But what about their prostate health, I thought. Surely, they had a Dr. Tocci in their lives to lead them down the golden road. Well, apparently not. Mind you, I’m only following Doctor’s orders, but at two times a day for a year, I would officially have bopped the baloney at least 730 times—a figure that doesn’t even have a category in the Indiana University study. Nowhere in this part of the study does it mention having actual sex, which my partner Michael thinks is a three-hour marathon. Yes, I program it into my iPhone calendar along with the rest of my schedule. Between his restaurant and my newspaper and magazine appointments, it’s a little like planning a party, complete with supplies and centerpieces. Suffice it to say, I apparently don’t have to worry about my prostate these days, which pleases Dr. Tocci but nowhere near as much as it pleases me. And, take it from me, you’ll never sleep better in your life-if you can find the time, that is. Until next week….

y all reports, John Browne lives a lavish life. The Baron Browne of Madingley—John to his friends—has an $8.5 million flat in London’s fashionable Chelsea district that takes up the entire top floor of a building in Cheyne Walk. He earned over $13 million as the CEO of British Petroleum (BP) and is credited for turning the oil company into a global giant. During his 40-year tenure at the company, he also kept a dark secret. Lord Browne is gay and enjoys the company of young men. While climbing the ranks of power at BP, he hid his secret under a curtain of business legitimacy until rising to his leadership position of the entire oil conglomerate in 1995. In 2003, Browne met his soon-to-be lover, Canadian Jeff Chevalier, on a gay escort site called Suited and Booted where the hustler charged a reported $60 an hour. Chevalier is said to have been quite the clever conversationalist, among his other talents, and soon found himself invited to move in with the highest paid executive in Great Britain. In the four years that followed, ChevaLord John Browne lier was introduced to British society, traveling around the world on private jets, drinking $2,000 bottles of wine, attending private dinners with the Prime Minister of Great Britain, and enjoying the other perks of Browne’s lavish lifestyle. For Browne, a man who had spent four decades in the closet, it was a refreshing change of pace, and one that he thought would last forever. Apparently, being the escort of one of the most powerful men in the world is not all it seems for Jeff Chevalier cracked under the pressure of sitting in the royal box at operas with Prince Michael of Kent and having to “endure” two-hour meals with Tony Blair. Things weren’t all that they might have been outside of the relationship either. For his part, Browne had built BP into a major oil player on the world stage, but not without exposing the dangerous underbelly of oil production. Browne had
built BP into a megafirm by buying other companies and cutting costs to magnify profits. On the surface, it was good business; underneath the shining exterior of the company, things were quickly disintegrating. In 2005, an explosion at BP’s Texas City, Texas, refinery killed 15 people and injured 170. Browne promised to improve safety throughout the company. In 2006, oil was found leaking from a 16-mile stretch of BP’s Prudhoe Bay pipeline. Before it could be repaired, 267,000 US gallons of oil spilled over 1.9 acres, making it the largest oil spill on Alaska’s north slope to date. “We have to get the priorities right,” Browne said. “And Job 1 is to get to these things that have happened, get them fixed and get them sorted out. We don’t just sort them out on the surface, we get them fixed deeply.” He then climbed back into bed with his secret boyfriend, content in the knowledge that all would work out. He had, after all, just renewed a lease on an oilrig called the Deepwater Horizon, capable of drilling the deepest oil wells in the world. But the pressure placed on BP to improve its safety performance record caused Browne to announce that he would be retiring early in 2008. Such news did not sit well with Jeff Chevalier, who was having problems of his own. Nervous issues that he was treating
with drugs and alcohol. In 2007, gossip about the relationship and his hustler boyfriend became frontpage news in the Mail on Sunday tabloid. Some say that Chevalier had sold the story to the newspaper. Browne ended the relationship and sent Chevalier back to Canada, before leaving BP in disgrace. Three years later, Deepwater Horizon caught fire and exploded off the coast of Louisiana, causing the world’s largest oil spill—a manmade disaster second to none. And as for Lord Browne—well, he’s written a book. “The Glass Closet: Why Coming Out Is Good Business” is available next week from Harper Business.

t’s 2 PM and you’ve hit the wall. You’ve got three more hours of work ahead of you. Sure, you’d love to hit the gym and exercise, but how? And you still have a boat load of stuff to do when you get home. Constant fatigue can stem from a variety of culprits. Physical causes like poor sleep, too much partying, or even more serious underlying medical conditions like diabetes and fibromyalgia can drain you big time. Chronic weariness can be mental, too. Stress at work and in your relationships, depression, etc., can sap your get-up-and-go and leave you dragging and blue. If your fatigue persists over a period of weeks, then you need to see your doctor. But there are certain energy draining enemies that you can confront right now if you want to get from slow to “go!” at work, in the gym, and other places. Enemy #1: Eating a sugary, fat-filled breakfast. Carbohydrate rich meals inevitably cause you to crash, leaving you tired and felling fuzzy in the head. Instead of sugars and starch, start the day with whole grains and lean protein which take longer to convert into glucose and can sustain energy levels for longer periods. How about a bowl of oatmeal with blueberries or two poached eggs with tomatoes and lettuce? Enemy #2: Skipping your exercise routine. Whatever you do, make sure to get to the gym. People who regularly complained of fatigue increased their energy levels by more than 20% with regular, low-intensity exercise according to a 2008 University of Georgia study. You don’t have to run marathons or live at the gym. Just do something, even for as little as 10 minutes a day. Use the stairs, do push-ups at your desk, walk to lunch. Enemy #3: Drinking more java. One to three cups of coffee per day will
no doubt give you that needed zap of energy. But any more than that will keep you awake at night. Coffee also over-stimulates the production of two hormones--adrenalin and cortisol--that can work against you. Chugging too much coffee can over stimulate adrenaline production which can leave you cranky and tired. Too much cortisol can make you store fat and leave your muscles sore and tired. A hot cup of coffee is a delight. Just don’t over-do it! Enemy #4: Eating the wrong snacks. Stay away from sugary quick fixes like honey buns, cookies and candy bars. Likewise avoid high-energy sugary energy drinks. These foods cause a sudden spike of energy as your blood sugar rises, then a crash as your body has to over produce insulin to help your system deal with the excess sugar. Instead, try high fiber or protein snacks like a slice of turkey, edamame (fresh soy beans) or nuts like pistachios, almonds or walnuts. Enemy #5: Feeling too stressed. Your brain doesn’t distinguish between the anxiety of dealing with a bitchy boss or being chased by a rabid dog. Either way, the body releases “fight or flight” hormones that help you cope with stress. The trouble is, the buildup of heavy duty hormones can wreak havoc on your body. Besides wrinkles and fatigue, you can eventually expect a whole array of physical and psychological problems like heart disease, ulcers and diabetes. No matter how busy or important you are, take a day off. Try yoga, visit a spa, learn to meditate. For more tips on a healthy metabolism contact TrainerTomB@aol.com. Visit my gym at www.punpnincgym.com. Call Tom Bonanti today (954-557-1119) and schedule a free intake today!

• 2 ripe avocados
uacamole, a dip made from avocados, is originally from Mexico. The name is derived from two Aztec words – ahuacatl (avocado) and molli (sauce). All you really need for guacamole is ripe avocados and salt. After that, a little lime or lemon juice— You are the Chef. Then comes chopped cilantro, chiles, onion, and tomato,… whatever. The trick to perfect guacamole is using good, ripe avocados. Check for ripeness by gently pressing the outside of the avocado. If there is no give, the avocado is not ripe yet and will not taste good. If there is a little give, the avocado is ripe. If there is a lot of give, the avocado may be past ripe and not good. In this case, taste test first before using.

STARS IN OUR EYES

t’s hard to find fault with John Boone’s big screen adaptation of John Green’s Y/A novel masterwork “The Fault In Our Stars” (Fox 2000). As faithful as a two hour movie can be to the near-epic tome on which it is based, “The Fault In Our Stars” is a luminous cinematic tragedy, falling somewhere between Love Story and Terms of Endearment. Like the book, the movie version eases us into the looming trauma with humor. It’s an effective device in putting the viewer at ease while introducing us to the characters. Main character/narrator Hazel (Shailene Woodley) attends a cancer support group, oxygen tank in tow, at the urging of her concerned and caring parents Frannie (Laura Dern) and Michael (Sam Trammell), who think she’s depressed. Their nudging pays off because Hazel meets the charismatic Augustus (Ansel Elgort), who lost half a leg to osteosarcoma, and her life is forever altered. Getting better acquainted via texts (presented animatedly on screen), through the books they share, and the movies they watch, Hazel and Augustus fall in love before our eyes. Before you can say “make a wish,” the pair is bound for Amsterdam where they hope to get answers from reclusive writer Peter Van Houten (Willem Dafoe) about some of the mysteries surrounding his one and only book. This is the proverbial beginning of the end. After sharing a romantic dinner and a night of intimacy, the trip reaches near-catastrophic levels on a few occasions. Once back home in Indiana, things take
Scene from “The Fault in Our Stars”
a sharp turn for the worse and the waterworks begin. If you are prepared for what follows then you will be better able to appreciate the film as a whole, including the breathtaking performances. Woodley has already proven herself to be a rising star, on par with Jennifer Lawrence, in films ranging from “The Descendants to Divergent.” But the real star of the show-especially judging by the squeals, swoons and sighs of the tween/ teen girls and gay guys in the audience at the screening--and rightfully so, is Elgort. This is a breakout performance comparable to Brad Pitt in “Thelma and Louise.” You never doubt his character for a second and his performance, as well as Woodley’s, is Oscar caliber.
A
s Lifetime Network biopics go, “House of Versace” (Lifetime/Lionsgate) towers, like a leggy supermodel, over “Liz & Dick.” Gina Gershon was born to play platinum fashion amazon Donatella Versace, straddling the line between characterization and caricature. The same can be said for Enrico Colantoni as the Gianni Versace. Based on Deborah Ball’s book of the same name, “House of Versace” dramatizes the tempestuous but undeniably successful working relationship that existed in the Versace family. “Clever little snake” Donatella (Gershon) has a knack for lining up celebrities to wear her brother’s couture designs. She loves the nightlife and isn’t shy
about whipping out her nose candy dispenser and indulging. Gianni (Colantoni) is the opposite; a workaholic who prefers being a homebody, snuggling in his pajamas with boyfriend Antonio (Stefano DiMatteo). This type of behavior doesn’t sit well with Donatella, who has her own brood (a husband and two kids) to look after, leading to “jealous bickering” between Donatella (her “brother’s muse”) and Antonio (her brother’s man). At least Donatella and Gianni get along with each other better than they do with number crunching brother Santo (Colm Feore), who resents the way that he and his family are disrespected by his closer siblings. “House of Versace’s” turning
L
ike “House of Versace,” “The Bling Ring” (A24/ Lionsgate) is based on real people and events. Taken from a Vanity Fair article by Nancy Jo Sales, “The Bling Ring” follows the exploits of Adderall-popping, selfiesnapping teen thieves who perpetrated a string of Hollywood Hills burglaries. Gay teen Marc (Israel Broussard)
meets Rebecca (Katie Chang) on his first day at the “dropout school” they attend. They click and soon they’re getting high at the beach, talking about their future goals and stealing the contents from unlocked cars in upscale neighborhoods. From there they move on to unlocked houses, where they help themselves to money, credit cards, jewelry, purses and cars. Clubbing with Chloe (Claire Julien), they meet up with homeschooled best friends Nikki (Emma Watson) and Sam (Taisa Farmiga). Marc and Rebecca continue their “shopping” spree, with a stop at Paris Hilton’s pad, and soon their friends want to join in the felony fun. Their desire to “rob,” returns the quintet to the Hilton homestead where they help themselves to more goodies.
Living the high life, in more ways than one, the gang achieves minor celebrity status; but even the most ardent fan knows this life of crime can not go on forever. Perhaps the most remarkable thing about “The Bling Ring,” aside from the sociopathic behavior and lack of remorse the teens exhibit, is the way Emma Watson is proving to be such a versatile actress (also see her in “The Perks of Being a Wallflower”). Not stymied in the least by her tenure in the Harry Potter series, Watson is an actress to watch. However, if you’re still waiting for Ms. Coppola to live up to the promise of “Lost In Translation,” you will have to wait a little longer, because “The Bling Ring” is a disappointment. DVD special features include Digital Ultraviolet, “making of” and behind the scenes featurettes and more.

back better than ever. She designs a new and beautiful collection built on the foundation made by Gianni and peace returns to the kingdom. Campy fun for gay men and their straight women friends (and, of course, all those lesbians who have been crushing on Gershon since “Bound”), “House of Versace” is classic home entertainment. The DVD contains no bonus materials.

point occurs in July of 1997 when Gianni is assassinated by serial killer Andrew Cunanan in front of his Miami palace. The filmmakers do an excellent job of marrying the vintage funeral footage with that created for the film. From this point on we witness Donatella’s downward spiral, resulting in the dissolution of her marriage, estrangement from her daughter and son, and the Versace legacy in ruins. Not even the arrival of matriarchal Aunt Lucia (Raquel Welch channeling Sophia Loren) seems to have an effect. To make matters worse, Princess Diana’s sudden death sends Donatella over the edge. All is not lost, however, and an intervention leads to Donatella being whisked away to rehab in a private jet. Clean and sober (but still smoking like a fiend), Donatella comes

ast week, in honor of Pride Month, we took a look at various monuments across the United States devoted to GLBT individuals and achievements. Of course, the U.S. is not the only country to honor members of the GLBT community. Throughout the world, memorials have been erected in parks and public spaces where people of all ages can visit and learn about individuals who were persecuted because of who they loved. This week, we expand our focus to look at global remembrances. England’s Alan Turing, known as the father of computer science, most likely helped end WW II by breaking Germany’s codes. However, in that unenlightened day, it didn’t stop his country from harassing him to the point where he eventually committed suicide. Today he is revered and remembered with a peaceful statue of him sitting on a park bench in Sackville Park, Manchester, England. A plaque explains that he was not only a great mathematician and scientist but also a ‘victim of prejudice’. Turing holds a half-eaten apple because it is thought that he killed himself by taking a bite out of a cyanide-laden apple after he started taking female hormones as an alternative to being sent to prison. While not specifically dedicated to the GLBT community, The Kiss Wall on Brighton’s seafront shows six couples of different genders and ages frozen in a kiss. The wall celebrates the diversity of Brighton, which is proud of being known as

one of the most accepting and gay-friendly places in the UK. Barcelona has a reputation as a safe haven for persecuted groups and individuals, as well as a city that respects the rights of the GLBT community. In the Spanish city’s Ciutadella Park is a monument with a Catalan inscription which translates as “In memory of the gays, lesbians and transsexual persons who have suffered persecution and repression throughout history.” Just as Jews were forced by the Nazis to wear yellow Stars of David to identify themselves, gay men were forced to wear pink triangles. In the 1980s, in the midst of the AIDS crisis, the GLBT community inverted the triangle and adopted it as a symbol against oppression. The Homomonument in Westermarkt, Amsterdam, is one of many memorials that use this symbol to remember gay victims of the Holocaust. It consists of series of triangles, three of which make up a larger triangle forming a plaza. gay and lesbian community) features a pink triangle with black poles. It was dedicated in February 2001, and is maintained by the Sydney Pride Centre. Throughout Germany and Austria, there are numerous monuments to the gay men who were put to death by the Nazis. The Nazis didn’t believe that there was such a thing as a lesbian, but no doubt, many were persecuted under other guises. In 1984, the former Mauthausen concentration camp was the first to install a monument acknowledging gay prisoners. It is inscribed with (translated here) “Put to death - ‘put to silence’ - for the homosexual victims of National Socialism.” A year later, the Neuengamme concentration camp erected a memorial to the 100 gay men imprisoned there, at least 33 of which lost their lives. In Frankfurt, a statue stands in remembrance of the homosexuals who were persecuted by the Nazis. The monument is a 19th century bronze sculpture depicting an androgynous “injured” angel. The damage to the statue resembles a scar, to symbolize the violence against the GLBT community experienced during the Third Reich. At the
base of the memorial is an inscription that translates as “Homosexual men and women were persecuted and murdered in Nazi Germany. The crimes were denied, the dead concealed, the survivors scorned and prosecuted. We remember this, in the awareness that men who love men and women who love women still face persecution.” In 1989, at Nollendorfplatz, on the wall of the Underground Station, Berlin installed a commemorative plaque as a monument to Berlin’s homosexual victims of the Nazis. Nearly 25 years later, the city also erected a memorial that aims to address ongoing discrimination. The sloping gray concrete slab on the edge of Berlin’s Tiergarten Park, echoes similar structures honoring Jewish victims of the Holocaust across the road. The Tiergarten monument features a video clip of two men kissing. At the dedication ceremony, the city’s openly gay mayor Klaus Wowereit said, “This memorial is important from two points of view: to commemorate the victims, but also to make clear that even today, after we have achieved so much in terms of equal treatment, discrimination still exists daily.”
