Summer Shorts Play Festival

Amado Mio

An array of short plays (each segment lasts less than 20 minutes) from the greatest playwrights around the nation make up “Summer Shorts: The American Short Play Festival.” This annual awardwinning theater festival showcases a lively mix of hilarious and provocative short plays. Included in this year’s performance are shorts from City Theatre National Short Play Competition winners. Most of the short plays are comedies, serving as a relaxing and hilarious way to kick off the summer. 8 p.m. Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. 1300 Biscayne Blvd. Miami. 33132.

Pier Paolo Pasolini is one of the most celebrated homosexual artists of the 20th century—a poet, writer, intellectual, and filmmaker. His controversial 1975 piece “Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom” remains one of the most disturbing films ever created, combining power dynamics, politics, grotesque violence, and sex. During that same year, Pasolini was murdered gruesomely, run over by his own car repeatedly. A male prostitute later confessed to the crime and then decades later recanted. Andrew Living Arts Studio presents a staging of one of Pasolini’s posthumous works, Amado Mio. In Italy during World War II, a teacher and three of his students escape through the countryside toward the American army. Warning, like most of Pa-

solini’s work full frontal male nudity will be on display. 8:30 p.m. Andrew Living Arts Studio. 23 NW Fifth St. Fort Lauderdale. 33301.

Avenue Q Entr-Acte Theatrix in Delray Beach will stage the popular 2004 Tony winner “Avenue Q.” The raunchy musical utilizes puppets and their human handlers in a unique combination of puppetry and music. Known for its vulgar, ironic songs, “Avenue Q” follows the problem of surviving in the big city during the tremulous years right after graduating college. The main character, named Princeton, moves into a grungy New York City apartment, meeting a host of colorful characters. 8 p.m. Delray Beach Center for the Arts at Old School Square. 51 N. Swinton Ave. Delray Beach. 33444.

Who wouldn’t want to be a fly on the wall listening to the fight over who would get top billing in this powerhouse couple’s concert tour? Beyonce rocked the music industry in the end of 2013, secretly releasing her well-reviewed, personal CD “Beyonce” with zero pre-release press. The “visual album” became the end-of-the-year conversation piece and a new staple in the gay community. Her husband, Jay Z, hasn’t had too bad a career himself. Now a businessman as much as a rapper, he is one of the most financially successful hip-hop artists and entrepreneurs in America. Tonight they share the stage, along with their love. 8 p.m. Sun Life Stadium. 2269 NW 199th Street. Miami Gardens. 33056.

T

he 45th Anniversary of the Stonewall riots seems like the perfect moment to celebrate. As we join tens of thousands of gay, straight, and openly curious on Wilton Drive this coming Saturday, the LGBT community is on display for the world to see. We are happy—no, make that joyous men and women (and those who love us) uniting in celebration of our mutual respect and harmony. Yes, we are out on the streets and visibly proud to be together and celebrating our individuality just as we celebrate our similarities. At the Stonewall Inn 45 years ago, Protester arrested however, things could not have been more during Stonewall riots in 1969 different. There was no “pride” involved for those patrons of the little bar at 51-53 Christopher Street. This was not really even a gay bar, as we know them today. The Stonewall Inn was owned by the Mafia, and was a dark hole into which the rejects of society would disappear in the evenings to escape personal pain through the miracle of alcohol. There were no strapping bodybuilders displaying unclothed body parts and rippling muscles. There were no bears or otters or other subspecies that are so common in today’s clubs and gay scene. No, in 1969, the patrons of the Stonewall Inn were disenfranchised drag queens and their transgender friends, effeminate gay men who would soon become the stereotypes of the homosexual movement, homeless youth who would congregate around the front of the building with hopes of getting some spare change and a friendly smile, plus male prostitutes flaunting their wares—usually a firm bubble but--that was available to be touched for the right price, and used for even a bigger payout. Make no mistake. This was a ratatouille of society’s rejects who were beaten and handcuffed in the early morning hours of Saturday, June 28, 1969, by police who were doing what they had become increasingly comfortable doing — harassing gays. Brave soldiers all, the drag queens ripped off their wigs and started throwing punches. The transgendered scratched and kicked their way on to Christopher Street. The effeminate boys screamed and ran, less to avoid arrest than to secure reinforcements from the homosexuals who populated much of Greenwich Village at the time.

The violence that erupted in full view of news reporters and TV cameras was a watershed moment in the fight for acceptance by the disenfranchised of Manhattan, America, and the world. And those rioters didn’t stop that Saturday morning. They continued for days to vent their frustration, and were joined by hippies and yuppies and Wall Street stock brokers, as they draw attention to a situation that was so vile as to be now routinely labeled as the single most important event leading to gay liberation and the on-going fight for equality. While the old Stonewall Inn would go out of business shortly thereafter, the movement that this riot began is responsible for giving life to every gay bar and club currently in business, every piece of legislation aimed at equal rights, every same-sex marriage and every pride event—including the one we’ll celebrate this Saturday beginning at noon. But while we’re puffed up with Pride on the Drive, we have a responsibility to recognize those drag queens, transgendered pioneers, effeminate gays and the street hustlers from the Village as the heroes they are. Most of us weren’t even born when the Stonewall riots occurred. Fewer still were there to fight for freedom. But to those who were, you have our unending appreciation and gratitude. It is because of you that we can hold our heads high and say we are LGBT. Yes, we can party and be proud for who we have become. But, we should and can never forget our roots in the pain and frustration of bigotry and hate that was gay America in 1969. It was, after all, not that long ago.

SUNSHINE STATE

Fort Lauderdale Commissioners Vote Yes on Same-Sex Marriages FORT LAUDERDALE, FL—A measure introduced by Comm. Dean Trantalis, which openly supports marriage equality as well as gay rights, passed a commission vote late Tuesday night 3-2. Voting for the measure were Comm. Bruce G. Roberts (Dist. 1), Dean Trantalis (Dist. 2), and Comm. Bobby D. DuBose (Dist. 3). Voting against the measure were Mayor Jack Seiler and Vice-Mayor Romney Rogers. The measure, officially labeled Resolution No. 14, called for the city commission of the city of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to go on the record as officially supporting marriage equality, urging enactment of a law that would provide for marriage equality in the state of Florida, and providing for rescission of conflicting provisions and an effective date when this might occurs. It was a stunning victory for same-sex activists and liberals within the commission ranks that such a measure was able to be passed in Florida, a state without gay marriage rights. From the onset, it was obvious that those in favor of the measure were in the majority, with speeches made in its defense were often eloquent and moving. While the resolution is non-binding, it does set the tone for future votes as well as the on-going court action demanding Florida recognize marriages preformed legally in other states.

PRESIDENT SIGNS EXECUTIVE ORDER; DISCRIMINATION BY EMPLOYERS HIRED BY FEDS NO LONGER ALLOWED.

P

COURTESY OF INDEPENDENT.CO.UK

Tuesday evening in New York. “While the president prepares to address a New York gathering of gay rights supporters, the American people will be left to sort out the costs to religious and constitutional liberties resulting from this executive order,” said Peter Sprigg, a policy analyst for the group, speaking to the Los Angeles Times. The president had previously put off signing an executive order in the hope that there might be some action by a bipartisan congress on the issue. This has been a long-going excuse given by the White House since as far back as 2011. The decision to sign the order caps a long campaign by gay rights advocates, who have expressed repeated frustration this year that Obama had not acted. White House officials had defended the delay, saying they did not want to act unilaterally so long as there seemed to be a reasonable possibility of congressional action. Although aides had suggested as long ago as 2011 that the outline of an executive order was ready, it wasn’t until this spring that the White House began to edge toward action. Nearly 200 members of Congress wrote the president a letter in March asking him to sign the order. The list of signatories included all 17 of the Senate Democrats seeking reelection, even those from conservative-leaning states.

resident Obama will sign an executive order forbidding companies that do business with the federal government—companies that collectively employ 28 million workers—from discriminating against employees on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. After years of lobbying a conservative Congress to pass a Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), the president took matters into his own hands by agreeing to sign an executive order that essentially covers 2 million gay and lesbian individuals, fulfilling a goal that gay rights organizations have sought for years. Currently, no federal law bans disPresident Obama crimination against gay and transduring address gender individuals. This is the case this week in 29 states as well, Florida among them. Twenty-one states, including California and Illinois, and the District of Columbia bar discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. Because companies that do business with the government make up about a fifth of the U.S. workforce, gay rights advocates say the change could provide employment protections for about 11 million workers currently living in states without legal protection. For LGBT advocates, the executive order is so important that they call it the third leg of the stool of Obama’s revolutionary record on gay rights, along with repealing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and backing same sex marriage. For Obama and Democrats, it’s a fresh way to try to energize the LGBT community and liberals heading into the midterms. “By issuing an executive order,” said Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin told the Los Angeles Times, “the president will not only create fairer workplaces across the country, he will demonstrate to Congress that adopting federal employment protections for [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender] people is good policy and good for business.” The Family Research Council, a prominent social conservative group, accused the White House of timing Monday’s announcement to “curry favor with activist organizations,” and noted that Obama was scheduled to speak to a fundraising gala of prominent lesbian and gay activists

amusing oddity. Well, hear me loud and clear. Being “tolerated” is no longer an acceptable option. We deserve better—not because we are better. Rather, it’s because we are the same. If we allow ourselves to be “tolerated”, we give permission to be labeled in a field of prejudice and discrimination. How dare they? It is time for all LGBT people to stop being so complacent. While it has been 45 years since Stonewall, it’s been 50 years since the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. That bit of legislation was both landmark and deceptive. The Act was intended to outlaw employment discrimination on the basis of race, religion, national origin, and sex. It was a wide net meant to cover the entire population. Except, apparently, gays who can still be fired by the Federal government for their sexual orientation. No questions asked. No questions needed. Well, that is no longer good enough. We are nothing if we are not equal. At all times and in all ways….That’s how I see it…Until next week….

HEALTH BY PETER JACKSON, CPT

ASK THE FITNESS MAN OBESITY AND DEPRESSION: IS THERE A LINK? Q: I am a 30-year-old man, 5’9” and I weigh 245 pounds. I am depressed because I am so overweight and this leads me to eat even more. I read somewhere that the reason some people can’t lose weight is because of low serotonin levels. Is that connected to my being overweight? A: The fact that you have reached out to me indicates you realize you need help – and that’s an important first step. My first recommendation would be to see a physician who can give you a thorough physical examination and determine what, if any, underlying medical conditions (such as an irregularity with your thyroid function) are contributing to your obesity. Secondly, you should seek the help of an experienced fitness professional you can help you with an exercise program and offer guidance on a healthy food plan. There is no magic pill or diet to lose body fat. It comes down to learning how to eat the right foods in the correct portions and engaging in regular exercise comprising both cardio and strength training. That’s the cold, hard truth. Your personal trainer can calculate exactly how much fat you need to lose. For a 30-year-old man like yourself, 12-17% body fat would be considered good. A pound of fat equates to approximately 3500 calories, so burning 500 calories more than you eat each day (500 x 7 days = 3500)

will lead to a pound of fat loss in a week. Health professionals advise against losing more than 1.5-2 pounds of fat per week. I am not in a position to make a connection between your obesity and possible low levels of serotonin, but I can address this topic in general terms. Serotonin (5-hydroxytrptamine) is a chemical produced naturally by the body which essentially helps brain cells communicate. It can help to calm anxiety, relieve mild depression, improve sleep and create a general sense of well-being. Changes in the level of this neurotransmitter caused by excessive use of alcohol and caffeine, a lack of exercise, smoking and diabetes, among other factors, have been attributed to a number of conditions including insomnia and, yes, obesity. Low serotonin levels adversely change our mood, so much so that drugs prescribed to treat depression and anxiety are typically engineered to work by increasing serotonin production. Americans spend $3 billion a year or more on drugs to treat depression and anxiety, according to published reports, but there are simple, inexpensive steps we can take to influence our mood naturally. The simple fact is this: We are what we eat because what we eat affects how we feel. Scientists have discovered that our diet influences the brain’s neurotransmitters

– including serotonin – and certain foods affect the natural production of this important chemical. Serotonin is made following a chemical reaction with tryptophan, an essential amino acid which is present in varying amounts in all protein foods. Here are a few: TURKEY: Every notice how relaxed you get after eating turkey at Thanksgiving dinner? That’s because turkey contains high levels of tryptophan from which serotonin is made. Turkey and other lean meats including roast beef, tenderloin and skinless chicken breasts are good sources of tryptophan. SALMON: Wild fatty fish like salmon, mackerel and sardines and packed with tryptophan and omega-3 fatty acids which positively affect mood. A 3.5 ounce serving of salmon contains 22 grams of protein and is an excellent source of omega-3 fats. Put wild

fish on your dinner table at least once a week. EGGS: Eggs are one of the best, natural sources of protein (6.3 grams per egg) and are rich in amino acids and nutrients the body needs. Forget egg substitutes and, please, eat the yolk! Scientists have now dispelled the myth that eggs yolks have a direct link to heart attacks. Dietary cholesterol found in eggs yolks are no longer believed to impact serum cholesterol which can lead to coronary disease. BANANAS: Bananas have been called “the world’s perfect food” – and with good cause. This amazing fruit is rich in vitamin C, fiber, minerals and potassium. A little known fact is that bananas contain tryptophan, and so also contributes to a positive mood. FLAX OIL OR FLAXSEEDS: Flaxseed oil is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids and is known for its anti-inflammatory

properties. Other nuts and seeds such as peanuts, almonds, sesame seeds, walnuts and pecans similarly contain generous levels of tryptophan. Other foods known to increase serotonin levels include asparagus, avocado, broccoli, buckwheat, cottage cheese, oats and pineapple. SUPPLEMENTATION: A non-prescription supplement available at any vitamin shop or health food store which is highly regarded for its ability to stimulate serotonin production is called 5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryphophan). This is an extract of the Griffonia simplicifolia plan native to West Africa. The Food and Drug Administration does not regulate the sale or monitor the claims of supplements, but it is widely believed that 5-HTP is not only safe in the right dosage (100 mg per day) but has the same effect as SSRI (Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors) antidepressants. It’s best to take this supplement at night as its calming effect helps to induce sleep. EXERCISE: In addition to eating balanced meals which contain protein and fats, making time for relaxation and getting sufficient sleep, it’s critical FOR EVERYONE to exercise at least three times a week. A regimen of both cardio exercise (walking, running) and strength training are necessary. Exercise releases chemicals called endorphins which also promote a sense of well-being.

PINEAPPLE AU RUM BY CHEF JEAN DOHERTY

• 1 large ripe pineapple trimmed, peeled, and quartered lengthwise • 5 1/2 tablespoons salted butter • 1/2 cup walnuts (2 ounces), coarsely chopped (you can use macadamia nuts too) • 1/4 cup of brown sugar • 2 tablespoons rum (I used what I had in

ero and I went through a juicing stage about 3 years ago, and upon juicing a lovely organic pineapple I decided to plant the head. It grew and grew, and I was not only loving the beauty of this growing fruit, I was also looking forward to harvesting a beautiful home grown pineapple. The pic was taken in April, harvested last week, and just now, ready to savor. This is the recipe I have come up with. Cut off and discard core from pineapple quarters, then cut each quarter lengthwise into about 5 lengths. Heat 1/2 tablespoon of butter in a heavy skillet over moderate heat until just melted, then add the walnuts and cook, stirring, until a shade darker, about 2 minutes. Transfer walnuts with a slotted spoon to paper towels to drain. Heat another tablespoon of butter in the pan over a moderately high heat until the foam subsides, then sauté one third of pineapple, turning over occasionally, until golden, 4 to 5 minutes. Transfer to a platter. Sauté remaining pineapple in 2 batches in same manner, using 1 tablespoon butter per batch and transferring to serving dish. While the last batch of pineapple cooks, heat the sugar, rum, and remaining 2 tablespoons butter in a small heavy saucepan over moderately low heat, stirring, until sugar is dissolved, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat. Serve pineapple with sauce spooned on top and sprinkled with walnuts. You are a chef. Don’t forget to plant the head!

Although born in Dublin, Ireland, Chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.

GREGARIOUS DRINKERY 2033 WILTON DRIVE, WILTON MANORS FL 33305 754-779-7399

June 18, 2014

Kalamata olives, diced tomatoes, and smoked applewood bacon. Go ahead. Clean your plate. Handheld sandwiches include a very tasty ground turkey patty, a hearty grilled chicken as well as beef and fish. We sampled the Grilled Chicken Sandwich (8.95). It was a thick affair topped with lettuce and tomato and a side order of fries. Any of the toppings are available as add-ons for 75 cents (we couldn’t resist the smoked applewood bacon). We were tempted by the sound of Reuben Fritters ($4.95), five golfball-sized croquettes made of minced corned beef. They are breaded in a panka-type crumb coating and deep-fried, before being drizzled with a spicy chipotle sauce and topped with green onions. The resulting taste was okay, if not the “absolutely divine” appetizer the menu promises, but suffice it to say, I’ll take any future Reubens sandwich style. We did enjoy the homemade potato chips that we sampled from the plate of a nearby guest who raved about appetizer of Hummus and Fresh Baked Pita Chips ($6.95). It looked large, tasty and gone…the guest having wiped that last bit up with his fingers! An excellent sign. While Gregarious Drinkery is fresh on the Drive and still working out some kinks, it does try very hard to accommodate its guests who seem for the most part to be more interested in drinking than eating. And therein lies Gregarious’s biggest problem. It needs to decide if it is a club or a restaurant, sports bar or video lounge. At the moment, it is trying to be all things to all people. The music is guest-selected on a jukebox, and is played far too loud for anyone dining to hold a conversation. Yet with cute servers and bartenders, all the pieces are in place to make it an eventual must stop. We’ll keep you posted.

here’s a new social gathering spot on the Drive called Gregarious Drinkery. With its sofa seating and stonewall décor, it’s a high-energy, sophisticated place to assemble pre-bar crawl on any given night. They’ve got seven flat-screen TVs which circle the bar and surrounding restaurant, a jukebox that plays dance music from the 70s, and a video system that allows TV shows and major league baseball to be played at the same time as cult classic films like “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” starring Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell. Marilyn stayed with us during a recent meal at Gregarious, which has now opened its kitchen and has a menu of assorted bar basics including burgers, salads, and housemade Potato Chips ($4.95) and cut-to-order French Fries ($4.95). In an interesting “one from column A; one from column B” approach, the drinkery offers entrees that can be accessorized with “protein” (in this case, shrimp, chicken, ground Angus beef, fish, and ground turkey) for $1.50-$2.00 more. Given that this is basically a video bar and not an Italian restaurant, we decided to throw caution to the wind and order the Pasta that comes standard with freshly shaved Parmesan cheese atop an extra version olive oil dressing. A small portion will set you back $6.95 with a large going for $8.95. We ordered the large pasta bowl with shrimp “protein” and were delighted to see that the pasta was actually a thin spaghetti that perfectly circled the nicely sized shrimp on our plate. A great bargain and delightful taste. Gregarious also serves a variety of Flatbreads (8.95) generously spread with hummus. The price includes two toppings and one protein, so it’s a meal in itself. Among the available toppings are artichoke hearts, caramelized onions, roast red peppers, chopped garlic,

TRAVEL BY RICK KARLIN

RICH, DARK & DELICIOUS

M

y name is Rick and I’m a chocoholic. Last week I licked the frosting off a cake and threw the cake away. I get a Tootsie Pop and smash it on the ground to get to the chewy, chocolaty center. I’ve been tempted to snort cocoa like cocaine. To paraphrase an old saying, “I like my chocolate like I like my men: dark, rich and filled with cream.” So, it’s no surprise that I have an entire file folder filled with places to check out for a chocolate fix when I’m traveling. Europe is on the agenda this fall because the 20th anniversary of The Salon Du Chocolat will be held in London from Oct. 17-19. The Salon du Chocolat is like the ultimate circuit party for chocoholics. Imagine more than 60,000 square feet of exhibition space dedicated to chocolate and cocoa! Chocolatiers unveiling their new products, live demonstrations, workshops, exhibitions and special events all pay tribute to the humble bean. The highlights of the show include award presentation and a chocolate fashion show, where all the creations are edible. For its 20th Anniversary, the Salon du Chocolat will present a great retrospective exhibition featuring the 150 most beautiful chocolate dresses ever. Entrance fees are a quite reasonable £15 (£12.5 if purchased in advance). There are other shows scheduled throughout the world. For a list of

cities and dates or more information, go to http://www.salonduchocolat.fr. As long as I’m in London, a trip to the Rococo flagship store on Kings Road is in order. In the winding aisles of all things chocolate, I can sip hot chocolate in a courtyard while watching chocolatiers in action, take a truffle-rolling class at the adjacent school, and, of course, shop for all things chocolate. For more information on the store and classes, go to http://www. rococochocolates.com/. After a short ride on the Chunnel train to Paris, for the Salon du Chocolat show there (Oct. 29-Nov. 2), I’ll make a short stop for the impossibly thick chocolatchaud. More than a simple hot chocolate; this is like chocolate lava, at Angelina on Rue Rivoli (http://www.angelina-paris. fr/en). Then I’ll head to Montreux and board the Swiss Chocolate Train, for a round trip journey in a 1915 Pullman car to Nestlé’s Maison Cailler chocolate factory, in the western Swiss village of Broc. An hour-long tour begins with a look at

Hershey Chocolate World’s Great American Chocolate Tour includes a chance to create your own candy bar and go on “Hershey’s Chocolate Tasting Adventure.”

ancient Aztec cocoa ceremonies, a view of the milk chocolate production line and ends with an all-you-can-eat tasting experience. Reservations are required and can be made at http://cailler.ch/. To totally blissout, I’ll also work in a tour of Confiserie Poyet in Vevey for a chocolate tasting class. For more information go to http://www. myswitzerland.com/en-us/confiserie-poyet. html, and a chance to enter a contest to win an assortment of Swiss chocolates. Of course, if my budget didn’t allow the trip to London and Paris, I could always head north to Mast Brothers Chocolate, in Brooklyn. Sourcing their

cacao from small farms in Ecuador, Madagascar, and Venezuela, the Mast Brothers create artisanal chocolate confections from scratch at their Brooklyn factory, which offers tours during which you can see how raw cacao beans from the Dominican Republic, Venezuela and Madagascar are hand-sorted, roasted and winnowed through a machine custom-made by a former aerospace engineer. One of the tour’s highlights is seeing a demonstration on how flavors like fleur de sel and coffee are added to the confections. Tickets are inexpensive, but do require advance purchase. Go to http://mastbrothers.com/. In Somerville, Mass., just outside of Boston, the Taza factory tour, with its aroma of dark chocolate, lets you know that you are in for an intense chocolate experience. The 45-minute tour ends at the company store, which is laden with free samples and includes some limited edition creations. For more information, check out http://www.tazachocolate.com/Tours. Of course, any tour focusing on chocolate would have to make a stop in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Hershey Chocolate World’s Great American Chocolate Tour includes a chance to create your own candy bar and go on “Hershey’s Chocolate Tasting Adventure.” A quick stop at the Museum on Chocolate Avenue for the Hershey story and some hands-on activities is a must before heading off to Hershey Park for a day of riding roller coasters, visiting the water park, taking in some of the campy shows and, of course, sampling chocolate. Before heading home, book a day at the Chocolate Spa. The treatments at this high-end hotel spa include a dark chocolate fondue wrap, a whipped cocoa bath, an edible dark chocolate facial and an invigorating chocolate sugar scrub. For more information on attractions in Hershey, go to www.hersheypa.com. I’d say more, but I’ve got a half-gallon of Dove Unconditional Chocolate Ice Cream to consume before lunch. Pass the spoon.

LUMINARY COUPLES

W

ith legalization of same-sex marriage growing state by state, it’s easier than ever for gay or lesbian couples to marry. What is sometimes left out of the discussion is how hard it is to stay together. The divorce rate in the U.S has remained stable since the 1980s when it reached 40% according to a study by the University of Denver. This makes the fact that there are same-sex couples that have maintained long-term relationships even more amazing. When these couples started out same-sex marriage wasn’t even an option. The only thing that has kept them together is a commitment to the relationship and each other. In 2011, Ellen Wedner and Keith Cromley, organizers of the Pride Parade in Wilton Manors in 2011, decided to include same sex couples and began a coordinated effort with the Stonewall National Museum and Archives to showcase these couples. Stonewall National Museum provided a reception and had posters made of each couple with before and recent photos and a short bio on each couple. That first year ten couples rode the parade route in vintage cars and were a crowd favorite.

In 2012, Luminary Couples made its first independent appearance in the Pride Parade due to the determination of its members and Magnum Healthcare owner Charley Menten and his partner John Fama. Stonewall Museum hosted another reception at which eight new couples were inducted and the following year, 2013, brought four new couples. Luminary Couples of South Florida was formed as an official group after the 2013 parade. The group consists of couples that have been together for between 17 and 50+ years. Luminary Couples provides social support for LGBT long-term couples, supports and promotes LGBT equal rights by sharing their experiences and provides concrete examples that same-sex couples are capable of maintaining loving, stable and committed relationships. This is the first year Luminary Couples is participating as a formal group. While it still has the support of The Stonewall National Museum and Archives and The Pride Center, and sponsorship by Magnum Health, the group’s members have assembled their contingent and arranged a float on their own. I met with them during a recent parade planning session and discussed how they made their relationships last.

ob and Chuck met at Ocean Beach in New York City in 1963. They spent the day together and had dinner that evening in, as Chuck describes it, “A romantic outdoor garden restaurant in Greenwich Village,” then he adds with a wink, “And later up in my apartment.” They both knew that first day that they were meant to be together. Bob says, “I moved into his apartment two weeks later.” They faced some problems,

Bob, a medical intern at the time, was a bit overwhelmed by Chuck’s involvement in the gay social life and they both went through periods of infidelity, (“It was the ‘70s!” adds Bob) but were able to stay together due to their mutual respect and dedication to each other. Bob and Chuck were married in City Hall in NYC, surrounded by friends on July 15 last year. A week of parties in New York and Fort Lauderdale followed. They were among the couples featured on a float honoring Legacy couples that have been in committed relationships of 20 years or more in the 2nd Annual Miami Beach Gay Pride Parade. They are among eight other couples bringing a suit against Rick Scott (among other state officials in their official capacity as representatives of the government) to challenge the right of the State of Florida to refuse to recognize and honor the marriages of same-sex couples, which were legally married elsewhere.

arol and Laura met 28 years ago in Panama City, FL. They both worked for a mental health center as therapists and program directors. Carol exclaims, “Who would have thought that a lesbian would meet the love of her life on the Red Neck Riviera!” They immediately began to hang out together and discovered they had similar hopes and dreams. After realizing it was a mutual attraction, they moved in together and haven’t looked back. They feel as if there haven’t been any major obstacles to their relationship but admit they have had some difficult times, but never to the point where they would have called it quits. “We love each other and our relationship is worth working on,” they say, adding that spending their lives together has been wonderful. Carol says, “I get to spend my life with the woman I

love, luckily enough, she is also my best friend!” They registered as domestic partners in Broward County as soon as it became possible. “I think we were probably second in line!” jokes Carol. Carol had been proposing for years, then one day Laura proposed. Laura is from Iowa and they got married there three years ago. The couple stayed at an old Victorian house on the bluffs of the Mississippi, and was married surrounded by Laura’s sister and her family, with two friends from Fort Lauderdale acting as witnesses. One of the couple’s good friends is a judge and she co-officiated with the judge from Iowa. When asked for advice for couples just starting out, Carol jokes, “Be sure you have a 25 year engagement before you jump into marriage! No, just kidding! Commit to working things out as much as possible.”

arco and Tim met in a club in Las Vegas 26 years ago, where they both lived at the time. After talking for a long time, they exchanged numbers. When Marco got home that night, there was a message from Tim inviting him to dinner. On their first date, Tim cooked a four-course meal, including Marco’s favorite dessert Bananas Foster. Marco says, “I knew then that he was the one for me, a good potential husband.” Tim jokes that it was the Bananas Foster that won him over. Their mutual love of travel has provided them with many memories. They weathered some health and financial problems and almost broke up twice, but Marco said, “Tim convinced me to stay. He is my rock.” They both credit communication as the key to their relationship. Tim says, “Be upfront about what you expect in a relationship.” Marco adds, “Be transparent, communicate and stay strong during the challenges, the pain, the tears. We talk, work it out and move forward.” They eloped to Provincetown last fall. “It was just the two of us with the officiant, at low tide at sunset. It was magical, just us talking to each other and looking forward to the future.”

Within a day or two, they had scoped each other out and as Mary says, “The more we were together, the stronger the feeling became.” This was even before “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and being in the military was an obstacle, but they never thought of ending the relationship. According to Mary, “Enjoy and treasure the good times. Learn to get over the bad time. Keep moving together.” If you read this article expecting a secret to a successful relationship to be revealed, you’ll be sorely disappointed. he “babies” of the group have been together 16 years and met the new-fashioned way, by Internet. They were introduced to each other via an on-line bulletin board (note to younger readers; this was a forerunner of Facebook or Grindr). It took several re-scheduled dates over a period of six months before they finally met face to face. Greg knew right away that Jayant was the one for him. Jayant, who was dating two other men at the time, said he knew that Greg was the one when he went to the theater with one of the other men he was dating and kept thinking about Greg. They not only have very different personalities (Jayant says, “We are like oil and water.”) but also diverse backgrounds, Greg remembers the biggest obstacle was “… introducing my Indian boyfriend to my German-American family.” While they both admit to thinking of calling it quits from time to time, Greg says, “The feeling never lasted through the nights. We always worked things out before bedtime.” Jayant’s take on it is, “He is still the best one I see around me.” The couple also credits their shared value system and the ability to support one another as a key to their success. They exchanged rings on the first anniversary of their meeting and plan to get

I was committed to move out of state. I missed her and wanted to move back right away.” Carol had an aneurysm in 2001, which has proved to be an obstacle, especially for Carol who now has on-going health and mobility problems.
