Fort Lauderdale Mayor in Hot Seat

SUNSHINE LETTERS The following letter was sent by HIV activist Marc Paige to Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler.

Idle Idol To the editor: For the past five years, I have volunteered to perform (at the Stonewall Pride Festival). I told them that I have sung all over Asia and that I would be happy to audition for whomever was in change. I also offered to send them a demo CD and my bio. I did not get one response. I sent out a letter to over 41 bars, clubs, restaurants offering a free show in order to showcase my singing, I also said the I would audition any time. Again, not one place responded to my offer. What is going on in Wilton Manors, the Gay Mecca of South Florida?!! It is often the only way a singer that has moved here to have a chance to get known. John Hamilton-DeGrussa (Address withheld).

Editor’s Note: While it is true that volunteering to sing at the Stonewall Pride Festival is not the way to normally get on stage, there are many opportunities to “launch your act” to receptive audiences via the weekly karaoke nights. Every club has one, and it only takes that single special performance done in front of the right audience to have Wilton Manors begging for more.

Dear Mayor Seiler: I was one of the speakers last night prior to the Fort Lauderdale Commission’s vote on a resolution to support marriage equality. As a married gay man (July 18, 2013 in Massachusetts), I was pleased that the Commission supported the resolution 3 - 2. I am disappointed that this resolution in support of changing Florida law to include gay couples in the institution of marriage did not get your support. I believe that this vote will come back to haunt you. This is not a threat, but rather my read on the political landscape and reality in 2014. I heard you tout your gay rights record, before explaining to the crowd of your sincere beliefs that marriage is between a man and a woman. But what I had hoped from you would have been a position like that of the current rabbi at the synagogue of my youth. When I heard that the Orthodox Rabbi of Providence’s Temple Beth Sholom testified in favor of the marriage The mayor’s response follows: Thanks for your input last night and today, and I am sorry that you are disappointed. However, I am surprised that, after twenty two (22) years of actively supporting the Gay and Lesbian community throughout the State of Florida, one vote on a ceremonial, non-binding issue would cause this type of response from you. As you know, I signed the first municipal domestic partnership ordinance in Broward County when I was

Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler

equality bill at the Rhode Island statehouse in 2013, prior to RI becoming the 10th state granting marriage equality, I sent the Rabbi a note of thanks. He wrote back and told me his decision was easy - that as an Orthodox Rabbi, he could not perform a same-sex wedding, but that civil marriage was a state concern, and that all loving couples deserve the right to be married; that the separation of church (and synagogue) and state, are vital principles in our nation. As an Orthodox Rabbi, he maintained his religious convictions, while still supporting the humanity and needs of all loving couples and families in civil society. I am saddened that you and Commissioner Rogers voted the way you did, but am thankful that the more progressive voices prevailed. If it had gone the other way, Fort Lauderdale would have once again been subjected to an antigay controversy. As a city and a region, our tourism industry took a terrible blow in 2007, barely surviving the ugly Jim Naugle debacle. I’m not sure gay tourism dollars would have forgiven another affront by this Commission. Your vote last night, had it been

2004, would have been very much in the mainstream; in 2014, it is not. Ten years later, the majority of Americans have “evolved” on this issue, largely due to LGBT people being out of the closet and open about our lives with our co-workers and loved ones, and also the leadership of President Obama. When Senator Rob Portman, Republican of Ohio, reversed his position and came out in support of marriage equality after learning his son was gay, he said this: “It allowed me to think about this issue from a new perspective and that’s as a dad who loves his son a lot and wants him to have the same opportunities that his brother and sister have.” Today, the vast majority of young people, gay and straight, are appalled by opposition to marriage equality for loving gay couples. If you have children or grandchildren who are or might be gay, I would imagine that it will be difficult and painful to try to explain this vote, against one of the major civil rights issues of our time. I am sorry you have chosen to be on the wrong side of history. Sincerely, Marc Paige

Mayor of Wilton Manors. As you also know, I signed the first domestic partnership ordinance in Fort Lauderdale when I became Mayor here. While in the House of Representatives, I fought for domestic partnership benefits at the State level, fought to implement civil unions, fought to allow gay adoption, fought to include sexual orientation in non-discrimination clauses at the State level, fought to include sexual orientation in antibullying legislation, fought to protect gay and lesbian students in the school

system, worked closely with Equality Florida on numerous and multiple issues, etc. Since the 1990’s, I have always supported civil unions with full and equal benefits. I have been consistent in and with that position, long before it became acceptable to the majority. I will continue to support civil unions with full and equal benefits, as I believe gays and lesbians should have equal rights under the law. Again, thanks for your input. John P. “Jack” Seiler Mayor, City of Fort Lauderdale

Editor’s note: Mayor Jack Seiler repeated illustration of his support for civil unions rather than same-sex marriage implies that the two are equal in the eyes of the law. Even the most unseasoned elected official must realize that civil unions (or domestic partnerships as the LGBT community actually has available to them in Broward County) relegates gays to a second-class status. While these legal mechanisms of civil unions provide a measure of protections to same-sex couples and their families, they are no substitute for the full measure of respect, clarity, security and responsibilities of marriage itself. They exclude people from marriage and create an unfair system that often does not work in emergency situations when people need it most. Additionally, those registered as domestic partners do not have the right to receive the benefits from the Federal goverment available to married couples. The fact that Seiler is proud of his record at a time when full marriage status is being legalized across the country points to an ostrich with its head in the sand. Full equalitz is what is being discussed here, mayor, not half-hearted substitutions.

equality for the LGBT community, specifically in school systems. Bullying, in particular, is a common concern for most families. The unfortunate reality is that nearly one in three students report being bullied during the school year. For LGBT students, it’s even worse. Eight out of ten LGBT students report having been verbally harassed at school, while four out of

10 have been physically harassed at school. Students who experience bullying are at increased risk for depression, anxiety, sleep difficulties, and poor school adjustment. “Our commitment together is to raise awareness about the negative impact that bullying has on the overall health and well being of young people,” said Alex Gorsky, Johnson &

In the past, Care with Pride has supported PFLAG’s anti-bullying efforts, and this year The Trevor Project and Family Equality Council are newly added beneficiaries. By the end of 2014, it is projected that Care with Pride will have raised more than $500K for its LGBT charitable partners since the program’s inception in 2012. The theme for this year’s program is “Caring for All Families,” emphasizing the need to cultivate respect and

President Obama has appointed five openly gay ambassadors around the world including Australia, Spain and Denmark. The nomination of the new openly gay ambassador to Vietnam is awaiting Senate confirmation. “It is a testament to President Obama and the U.S. Senate that the sexual orientation of these nominees was irrelevant to their Brian Brown qualifications for their posts, as it should be,” said Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign, in a statement to Buzzfeed. “All Americans should be proud to have these fine public servants representing the interests of the United States.”

RINCETON, NJ—Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) said that samesex couples were “flawed.” In an interview with the Associate Press regarding a new Obama initiative to take gay rights global, Brown said, “This is taking a flawed view of what it means to be a human being — male and female — and trying to impose that on countries throughout the world.” Brown added, “The administration would like people to believe that this is simply ‘live and let live.’ No, this is coercion in its worst possible form.”

One thing we both agree upon however is the lack of any fashion sense that’s rampant in the LGBT community these days. Those of us of a certain age remember the days when gays were the kings of fashion. They knew how to put together an outfit for any occasion and loved strutting their stuff for the straights to see. They were particularly on their game in their churches and synagogues where, although we were never able to hold hands and pray, we did manage to standout in our Bill Blass or Yves Saint Laurent, the precursors of Armani and Versace. We were hot, we were groomed, and we were trendsetters. Fast forward to 2014 Fort Lauderdale and discover an entirely different world. Cut off T shirts and flip-flops are standard issue for gays of all body types. While I enjoy the sight of a well-worked-out body in an outfit that displays fine musculature as much as the next guy, there is nothing pleasant or particularly attractive when sagging flesh and faded tattoos are revealed by ill-fitting outfits that are forced upon us as we eat, drink and be merry. At a recent meeting of the Fort Lauderdale City Commissioners, at which same-sex marriage was being discussed, few can forget the rotund lesbian biker with her gold front tooth and tears tattooed on her face, standing to address the lawmakers. What possesses people to leave their homes like that—for any reaon, let alone a political one? It’s one thing to see a housewife, hair in curlers, and clad in stretch pants straining at the seams, standing in line at Walmart. It is entirely another variation on a theme to witness the saggy jeans inherited as a fashion trend from the ghetto on otherwise successful gay businessmen. “We are continuing, as a culture, on this downward spiral of style,” Clinton Kelly (“What Not to Wear”) said.

Same-Sex Marriage Legal Battle Before Florida Judge Today

Georgia Gives Same-Sex Benefits to University Employees

11

ATLANTA, GA—Despite the fact that the state of Georgia is in the middle of a contentious fight over the right to same-sex marriage, the University system of Georgia on Monday voted to give married same-sex couples tax benefits equal to heterosexual couples. The benefits are being available through its Optional Retirement Plan that allows for a same-sex spouse to be listed as beneficiary. That person will pay lower federal fees and be able to roll the retirement money into another account. There are 27,240 system employees currently using the Optional Retirement Plan that could be affected by the decision. Since Georgia doesn’t recognize same-sex marriage, spouses won’t be eligible for any other benefits through the university system, including health care.

MIAMI, FL – On Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m., the legal fight for equal marriage rights in the state of Florida will face its first hearing before Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Sarah Zabel. The judge will hear a motion on a lawsuit filed by gay and lesbian couples in January that claims that the state’s ban on samesex marriage is in violation of the U.S. Constitution. According to local television station WSVN, Anthony Verdugo, executive director of the Christian Family Coalition, said Zabel and Miami-Dade Clerk of Courts Harvey Ruvin are overstep-

LONDON, UK--Rock superstar Elton John said that he would like to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and talk about the issue of gay rights during his trip to Russia in November, according to an interview John gave to Britain’s Sky News. “I don’t know what good it will do,” the singer admitted. “But unless you build a bridge, it’s no good putting up a wall and saying ‘I’m not talking to these people.’ The only thing that gets solved is by talking to people.” Earlier this year, Putin said that John was loved by millions of Russians “despite his orientation” in response to criticism over a law prohibiting the dissemination of so-called “gay propaganda” to minors. One of the world’s most prominent gay celebrities, John said he will continue pushing for equality and fighting for gay rights. “I may not achieve anything but I have to try. There are so many people out there living a life of hell,” John said. “As long as I’m alive I will fight for people’s rights.” In the same television interview, John said he plans on legally marrying his civil rights partner David Furnish next year in a small ceremony.

ping their boundaries. “The will of the people must be respected. There was an election in 2008, and this issue was decided,” he said. Verdugo and other groups gathered to send a message to Ruvin: Don’t even think about selling marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples. “As a county official, he cannot alter a state document in one county. That has to come from Tallahassee,” said Verdugo. “There is no supporting law for those licenses. Those licenses would be null and void upon their sale.” Whether or not marriage licenses begin to be issued would hinge on Zabel’s next move. The motion asks for the judge to make an immediate decision on the issue without a jury, according to WSVN. Even though Florida Attorney General Pat Bondi has vowed to defend the ban in court, Cathy Pareto, one of the six couples who filed the suit, said momentum is on their side. “I’m optimistic in the sense that court after court across the country has ruled that these types of bans are unconstitutional, and I would imagine that, hopefully, at some point, as this works through the court system, Florida would come to that same conclusion,” she said to WSVN.

SAME-SEX MARRIAGE

CAUSES WHAT? T OMAH, WI—Karen Mueller, a Republican candidate in Wisconsin’s Third Congressional District spoke at a “meet-the-candidates” event last week in the town of Tomah, population 9,192. Mueller, who is an attorney, told the assembled crowd that if the ban on same-sex marriage were to be lifted, it would create an environment of incest. In an effort to explain the outrageous claim, Mueller said, “We’ve got, for instance, two sisters, and these two sisters want to get married. They love each other. They are committed to each other. They want to spend the rest of their life together,” Mueller was quoted as saying in the Tomah Journal. When reminded that incest is illegal in Wisconsin regardless of the same-sex issue, Mueller responded that lawyers for such a couple could plead a good case against laws prohibiting incestuous relationships by citing the repeal of sodomy bans. “Once you do away with that, you reveal what is really going on here,” she said. Mueller’s comments were greeted with scattered applause, according to an audience member. “I couldn’t believe my ears,” said local resident Sally Jacobs. “The worst part was that I could tell this silly woman was serious. I know we’re in the country here, but come on…” In direct response to the same-sex marriage ban, Mueller suggested that there was nothing discriminatory about it. “They can get married,” she said. “They just can’t get married to each other.” All three Republican candidates

objected to the recently announced Federal court rulings that struck down Wisconsin’s same-sex marriage ban. The ruling is currently being appealed. Mueller’s opponent Ken Van Doren claimed that the real motivation behind the push for samesex marriage was purely financial. Yet, in stating that gays were primarily after the financial benefits of being married, Van Doren innocently made the case for the opposition who say that the same-sex ban is discriminatory. Gays and lesbians are routinely denied benefits that homosexual marrieds enjoy without question. Tony Kurtz, the third candidate, said that the court “overreached” in voiding the marriage ban, but added that he supports civil unions, which Wisconsin makes available to samesex couples. The winner of the Republican primary, to be held August 12, will be running against incumbent Democrat Ron Kind in the general election November 4. Kind has held the office since 1997, and is a graduate of Harvard College where he was the quarterback on the football team. In interest group ratings from his time in office, Kind has supported women’s issues, poverty reform, veteran’s issues, social security, environmental issues, education, and civil rights. He holds a rating of 95 out of 100 from the Human Rights Campaign for his positions on LGBT issues in the 112th Congress, 2011-2013, and voted for marriage equality for gays last year. Tomah is known as the Gateway to Cranberry Country for its proximity to cranberry farmland.

MUSIC TO OUR EARS

I

f you saw (and loved) writer/ director John Carney’s 2006 breakthrough film “Once,” about the unlikely romance that develops between an Irish busker and a Czech immigrant, then you’ve probably been waiting for a followup that is its equal. “Begin Again” (Weinstein) comes close, but it doesn’t quite make the cut. Down-on-his-luck indie record label founder Dan (“The Normal Heart”’s Mark Ruffalo) hits bottom when he’s dismissed by his business partner Saul (Mos Def) from the company they co-created. His marriage to music journalist Miriam (Catherine Keener), like his steady flow of libations, is on the rocks. His teenage daughter Violet (Hailee Steinfeld) has basically lost respect for him. Across town, Greta (Keira Knightley), a British singer/songwriter, has seen her relationship with boyfriend and songwriting partner Dave (Adam Levine) come apart at the seams as he experienced an unexpected rise in popularity. Reduced to crashing on the couch of her friend and busker Steve (James Corden),

Greta plans to return to England. But a chance meeting between Dan and Greta at a live music club, where Steve has invited Greta onstage to sing a song, will have a profound effect on both of their lives that neither of them could have foreseen. Where “Once” felt grounded in gritty reality, “Begin Again” has a New York fairytale (minus the fairies – it’s Manhattan, they couldn’t find one gay character?) quality that borders on the surreal. The environmental recording sessions, for instance, are pure Hollywood. So is Dan’s discovery of his daughter’s previously unrevealed musical talent. Redemption and romantic reunions are part of the soundtrack, as are the infectious tunes (a few of which were co-written by Gregg

Alexander and former child-star Danielle Brisebois) sung by some of the cast members. There are parts of “Begin Again” that feel familiar, especially if you’ve watched “Once,” not enough to consider this “Once Again,” but sufficient to make you wonder if Carney is running out of ideas. However, if you are looking for some non-traditional summer entertainment, you’d be wise to start with “Begin Again.” [In theaters July 2, 2014.]

the concert features 18 songs from the legendary piano man’s career, now in its sixth decade. Backed by longtime members of his band, including Davey Johnstone, Nigel Olsson and Ray Cooper, as well as backing vocalists including Tata Vega, the Rocket Man demonstrates why he’s been able to be the concert draw he’s been for all these years. Seated at the titular Million Dollar Piano, a nine-foot Yamaha (introduced by EJ as his “costar”) equipped with several video screens to identify songs, albums and more, the gay music icon sings and tells stories to the audience. He even gets extra points for a Madonna slam. DVD bonus material includes a “Making The Million Dollar Piano featurette and “Live In Kiev” footage.

A

fter you’re done enjoying the fireworks here on the 4th of July, head up to Philadelphia where the biggest influx of tourists is over and you can enjoy historical sites without tripping over families of out-of-towners. Philadelphia is one of our country’s oldest cities so there’s plenty of history to “get straight” and a few to “get gay” as well. The City of Brotherly Love was the site of some of the nation’s first gay rights pickets, and in 1982 was one of the first cities in the country to pass an anti-gay discrimination law. For history buffs, Philadelphia is full of Colonial heritage. See the Liberty Bell in its new light-filled digs at Liberty Bell Center, on Independence Mall. A short block away is Independence Hall where patriots gathered in 1776 to defy the king of England and where 11 years later, representatives from 12 states shaped the Constitution. A guided tour led by National Park Service rangers includes the original inkstand used to sign the Declaration of Independence;

RACHEAL GRAZIAS

The Mummers Parade, held in Philadelphia on New Year’s Day, included gay and drag performers for the first time this year

and an original draft of the Constitution. If you want a complete tour of Philly’s historical sites, with lots of background knowledge, sign up for “Philadelphia on Foot” run by Ed Mauger (215-627-8680). A captivating blend of historian and gossip, he’ll lead you on a walking tour to behind-the-scenes places and tell true tales that involve everything from 18th-century sex to surgery. Refuel at City Tavern where the founding fathers gathered. It is still a working restaurant where dishes are prepared according to historic recipes and served on Colonial-style dishware by a wait staff in period dress. Try the pepper pot soup and lobster pie. Cap off the evening with “The Lights of Liberty”, an hour-long outdoor soundand-light show on the cobblestone streets of Society Hill. If you want even more history, plan a day trip out to Valley Forge where General George Washington and his troops endured the difficult winter of 1777-78. It is now a National Historical Park and is less than an hour from Center City. Now that you’ve got your history straight,

let’s talk about how to make your nightlife gay. Gay life (and nightlife) is centered in an area of the city fondly called the Gayborhood, which runs from Chestnut to Pine Streets between 11th and Broad Streets. If Epcot Center had a “GLBT” section, it would look like this. Narrow, tree-lined, cobblestone streets, and brick townhouses and apartment buildings peppered with bookstores, incredible little storefronts selling trendy furniture, clothing and accessories, coffee shops, restaurants, bars and clubs. Philadelphia isn’t a big city and many of the destinations you’ll want to visit are either in the Gayborhood/Center City or a short walk away. There are a number of good hotels, but when I’m visiting Philly, I always stay at The Loews Philadelphia Hotel. The first skyscraper ever built in Philadelphia and a former bank building is now home to this 600-plus-room hotel and located in the heart of the city. There’s easy access to the Convention Center, Chinatown, the dramatic Academy of Music, and, of

course, the Gayborhood. The Gayborhood offers plenty of nightlife options, whether you prefer to sit at a piano bar, chat at a neighborhood pub or dance the night away. Tavern on Camac is a traditional piano bar with folks singingalong on the first floor, an intimate cabaret on the second and other floors for dancing and private events. iCandy features three floors swarming with men every night. The Bike Stop, which has been around for more than 30 years, is another multi-level club with each floor offering a special focus on leather. U Bar, formerly known as Uncles reinvented itself and now boasts a sleeker look, better lighting and floor-to-ceiling windows. The legendary strong drinks and great beers at reasonable prices remains the same. Voyeur is a popular after-hours club; Knock is a popular restaurant/bar; and there’s always Woody’s, the traditional first stop on any proper night out. AIOLI BY CHEF JEAN DOHERTY

A

ioli is a kind of garlic mayonnaise sauce from the south of France. It is a great accompaniment for grilled fish, crab, shrimp, poached fish, and all sorts of vegetables. In small towns in the south of France, you can find yearly festivals known as “la fête de la grande aioli.” Here the aioli is much more than a garlic mayonnaise: It is a party for the whole village, and huge platters of boiled vegetables, fish, and hard-boiled eggs are served, along with gallons of aioli. All the people get together to dance, drink wine, and enjoy. You can make this recipe the traditional way with just olive oil, or substitute your favorite vegetable oil for part of the olive oil. (I like it 50 percent olive oil and 50 percent vegetable oil myself.) The garlic in this is potent. Start with one clove and be sure to remove the germ in the center of the garlic, which can be difficult to digest. (In other words, it’s what gives you bad breath!) You can also play around with this recipe by adding some hot sauce, mustard, chopped herbs, or anything else that strikes your fancy. Remember—you are the chef! (The most important thing about this recipe is to have all your ingredients at the same temperature before making • 2 egg yolks this sauce. The best way is to take every• 2 cloves of garlic thing out of your fridge about an hour • Salt and pepper beforehand.) Take a mortar and crush the garlic into • Cup of olive oil (or a fine paste. Season with salt and pepper, half veggie oil, half and then add the egg yolks. Whisk in the olive oil) olive oil, slowly and gradually, like you • A few drops of would for mayonnaise. Finally, add a few lemon juice drops of lemon juice. Add a teaspoon of warm water to your aioli at the end, to keep it from splitting. Although born in Dublin, Ireland, Chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.

wines by the bottle and glass is complemented by a selective variety of craft and IPA beers. The diverse boutique wine list is global in focus, offering more than 50 wines by the tasting, the glass or bottle. Prices average $10-$15 a glass, $35-$65 a bottle. The prices become even more reasonable on weeknights between five until seven with a two for one happy hour special. The beer selections range from hoppy to malt, something for every beer drinker’s taste. A few of the microbreweries are Florida-based. Beer prices range from $7-$10 a glass, oddly enough not part of the happy hour offerings. Liking Chill’s Facebook page will get you invites to special events and wine and beer tastings, some of them free. While not a gay bar, the atmosphere is certainly gay friendly, the bar has even hosted a couple of events for GLBT organizations, including HRC and the Fort Lauderdale Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. Weeknights can be a little quiet early in the evening, but that’s an advantage if you’re working on your mobile device (Chill has free Wi-Fi). After a few glasses of wine, your typing may get a bit sloppier, a problem you won’t encounter at Starbucks. On weekend evenings, there are local performers of varying quality. Service is friendly, if not always the most polished. One of my pet peeves is when servers “auction off” the items ordered, as in, “Who had the Chardonnay?” How hard is it to remember when there are only four people at a table? My only other complaint is that, while Chill looks like a deco movie set for a glamorous period film set in the 1930s or ‘40s, the soft purple lighting isn’t the most flattering. Switching it for a nice pink hue would make everyone in Chill look more attractive, not that the decidedly pretty people hanging out there need much help in that department.

hill is a sleek, modern wine lounge with convenient, if not abundant free parking. It’s a place to enjoy a glass (or two or three) of wine, chat with friends and, well, chill. There is a beautiful bar, numerous tables, couches and even an outside area, if you don’t mind the mixture of cigarette smoke and exhaust fumes (it’s right at the intersection of Sunrise and Federal) and the smell of popcorn from the Gateway Theater, located right next door. If the smell of that popcorn makes you hungry, the small menu has something for everyone. Cheese and charcuterie boards are available in two sizes for $20 and $27. A variety of crostini are also available. The selections include prosciutto with peaches, sweet peppers with goat cheese, escargot with spinach, pate with goat cheese and brie with mushrooms. Each option is $10. A sampler platter featuring your choice of any combination of the five varieties is $25. For something really yummy and decadent, try either of the baked cheeses; brie topped with gingered pears and caramel or Camembert topped with roasted mushrooms. The baked cheeses require a 30-minute wait, so have a second glass of wine to pass the time, then scoop up the oozy goodness with some bread. Many other dishes are served tapas style. The pan-cultural selection includes a trio of dips, Mediterranean meatballs, frico tacos, cherry tomatoes stuffed with mozzarella and basil, and the classic prosciutto-wrapped asparagus. These dishes are priced between $8 and $12. A sampler platter is also available featuring the taco, cherry tomatoes and asparagus for $25, although you’d be better off ordering the three items separately for just $2 more. However, it’s the beverages that draw folks to Chill. The vast selection of

HEALTH BY PETER JACKSON, CPT

ASK THE FITNESS MAN WEIGHT TRAINING ESSENTIAL TO BURN BELLY FAT Q: I’m a 35 year-old, 205 pound man whose goal is to have six-pack abs. Currently I’m about 15 pounds overweight – most of which seems to be in my mid-section. I’ve been doing more cardio and tons of sit-ups, but that’s not working. Help! A: There is no magic bullet for burning belly fat, but this much is certain: cardio and sit-ups alone won’t get you where you want to be — and neither will the gadgets you see on TV infomercials at 3 a.m. The answer lies in reducing your overall body fat by adopting a healthy, balanced diet and getting sufficient exercise including weight training. Body fat is stored energy and to lose it you must burn more calories (energy) than you consume. Creating a calorie deficit and dropping

weight by dieting alone (calorie restriction) doesn’t work long-term. When you diet and drop weight in this manner, you also lose important lean muscle because your body will break down muscle for energy. Adding a weight-training program to your strategy of eating healthy and increasing cardio activity will raise your metabolism. As you gain muscle, you will burn more calories and consequently lower your body fat. Average body fat for a man of your age is about 17%. You will need to lower your body fat to about 10% for your “six-pack” abs to show. Here are a few recommendations to help drop the fat from your belly: • Eat four to six small meals and snacks a day versus two or three big ones, cut

TIP OF THE WEEK: CINNAMON HAS MANY BENEFITS

July 2, 2014

Add ½ teaspoon of cinnamon to your oatmeal and protein shakes to burn body fat and lower your LDL cholesterol. This amazing spice has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for everything from colds to nausea, diarrhea and yeast infections. Studies suggest cinnamon has a regulatory effect on blood sugar and encourages body fat reduction by enhancing glucose burning inside fat cells.

out the sodas and alcohol and drink several glasses of water per day. • Calculate your daily calorie needs using this simple formula recommended by Men’s Health: Multiply your target body weight (190 pounds in your case) by 10. This equals 1900 calories. If you engage in more than an hour of exercise per week, add 1 to the multiplier for each additional hour. This means if you engage in 4 hours of exercise per week, your daily goal would be 190 x 13 = 2,470 calories. • Eat 1 gram of protein per pound of your target bodyweight (one gram of protein is roughly 4 calories). So if want to weigh 190 pounds, you’d eat roughly 190 grams (760

carbohydrate target.

• Eat half a gram of fat for your target body weight (1 gram = 9 calories). This means for your target weight of 190 pounds, you should consume about 95 grams (855 calories) of fat daily.

• This is a guide only. Consult your physician and registered dietitian before beginning any fitness and nutrition program.

• To calculate your carbohydrate intake, add the calories from protein (760) and fat (855) and subtract from your total calorie goal (2,470), leaving you with 855 calories which will be your daily
