Bisexuals Overindulge in Drink, Cigarettes and Food Compared to Gays and Lesbians
John MacArthur: Churches which support same-sex marriage belong to Satan
SALEM,, MA—The city of Salem, Massachusetts, put an end to a longtime contract with the Christian-based Gordon College after administrators refused to cave to the gay-rights movement and remove a ban on “homosexual behavior” among students and staff. The contract between the two entities was a “reciprocal arrangement where we provided management of the facility in exchange for using it for educational programs connected to Gordon, and as well as ‘curation’ experiences for history majors at Gordon,” Rick Sweeney, the vice president of marketing and communications at the college, told the Christian Post. The contract, in place since 2008, was actually due to wrap in August, but Salem officials decided to use the optout clause and exit the agreement early, The Blaze reported. The public controversy stemmed from Gordon College president D. Michael Lindsay’s addition of his signature on a letter to President Obama requesting an exemption from his executive order on workplace discrimination against gays. Fourteen religious leaders signed the letter, The Blaze reported. Subsequently, Salem Mayor Kimberley Driscoll pointed to the college’s “behavioral standards” and policies that ban “homosexual behavior” as the reasons for the early contract drop, The Blaze reported. She said the college policy was actually in conflict with a non-discrimination ordinance that Salem had put in place a few months ago. “The city does not contract with private parties that willfully discriminate on the basis of age, ancestry, color, disability, family status, gender identity or expression, marital status, military status, national origin, race, religion sex or sexual orientation,” she said in the Christian Post report.

SUN VALLEY, CA--John MacArthur, the pastor of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, said that any house of God that supported same-sex marriage “belonged to Satan.” According to an interview published in The Blaze, MacArthur stated, “You go back to every one of those seminaries...for a century [they] have been

WASHINGTON, DC--In a federal report released this week, the government attempted to corral sexual orientation for the first time in a scientifically controlled study. The study, reported by the National Center for Health Statistics, was based on answers from more than 34,000 adults, and revealed that 1.6 percent of the population is gay or lesbian, 0.7 percent is bisexual, and 97.7 percent is heterosexual. According to the study, all groups
thought that their health was mostly excellent or very good, with the healthiest group being gay men at 55 percent. More than half of all groups also met federal guidelines for aerobic physical activity. Surprisingly, 69 percent of gay or lesbian adults reported that they had private health insurance, compared with 65 percent for heterosexuals and 57 percent for bisexuals. Bisexuals were more likely to have public health care (19 percent) compared with heterosexuals (16 percent) or gays and lesbians (15 percent). As to specific behavior, some 30 percent of bisexuals and 27 percent of gays or lesbians were current cigarette smokers, compared to 20 percent of heterosexuals. Forty-two percent of bisexuals and 35 percent of gays or lesbians said they had drank alcoholic beverages in the last year, including a day when they had five or more drinks, while 26 percent of heterosexuals said the same. Bisexuals registered the highest levels for serious psychological distress in the past 30 days (11 percent) and obesity (35 percent), compared to the other groups.

Country superstar Dolly Parton will release a new dance album focused on the LGBT community and includes the Parton-composed song, “Just a Wee Bit Gay.” Speaking to Billboard Magazine, the “9 to 5” star said, “At some point, I would like to do a dance record and I have several songs that are very positive towards the gay community,” Parton said during a press conference at the conclusion of her recent world tour. “I have a song called ‘Just A Wee Bit Gay.’ It’s a great little dance tune, it’s funny, and it’s got a lot of comic in it… I do write a lot of songs along those lines with people that are different and are just themselves.” Parton, 68, has a spent a lifetime championing gay rights, including same-sex marriage. There have been unsubstantiated rumors that Parton herself is gay, though the singer has neither confirmed or denied it. Regardless, Parton remains a icon of country music and the most honored female country performer of her time. Her 4’11” stature belies her achievements as a philanthropist, venture capitalist, theme park owner and as a LGBT icon.
deniers of biblical authority, they have no relationship to scripture, they are the apostate church, they are Satan’s church,” he said. Further, he said that all liberal-minded congregations “have no allegiance to the Bible.” MacArthur, well known for his conservative views, has previously referred to biblical readings which support homosexuality as “warped” and “completely irrational.” “God’s condemnation of homosexuality is abundantly clear – he opposes it in every age,” he wrote in an article titled “God’s plan for the gay agenda. “Whether it’s at the heart of a religious scandal, political corruption, radical legislation, or the redefinition of marriage, homosexual interests have come to characterize America,” MacArthur admitted. “That’s an indication of the success of the gay agenda. And some Christians, including some national church leaders, have wavered on the issue even recently,” he wrote. “As a Christian, you must not compromise what the Bible says about homosexuality – ever. No matter how much you desire to be compassionate to the homosexual, your first sympathies belong to the Lord and to the exaltation of his righteousness. Homosexuals stand in defiant rebellion against the will of their Creator who from the beginning “made them male and female” (Matthew 19:4). “Homosexuals, and those who advocate that sin, are fundamentally committed to overturning the lordship of Christ in this world...As you interact with homosexuals and their sympathizers, you must affirm the Bible’s condemnation.” In the same interview with The Blaze, he insisted that “the young generation has bought into the corruption and lack of ethic morals by media entertainment” and suggested that the wrath of God, as described in the book of Romans, is upon America as a result of its liberalization. “Romans 1 describes exactly what is happening in America...it defines the wrath as God giving them over, giving them over, giving them over,” he

LAUDERDALE-BY-THE-SEA, FL— The television cameras were rolling this past Monday at Diner-By-the-Sea, following longtime servers and friends Arlene Hames and Nancy Pisarzewski who have since left on a trip of a lifetime. The pair was selected as guests on the Swiss TV show “Jobtausch” (“Job Swap” in English) in which employees exchange jobs for a week. And for the past week, the new Swiss hires have been service Arlene and Nancy’s customers at the diner according to owner Billy Sand says they have been on duty since last Thursday covering Hames and Pisarzewski’s 6 a.m.-2 p.m. shift. Sand picked the Swiss couple at the airport and has been lodging them in his home.
Sand was originally contacted over two months ago by the German-based Constantin Entertainment. producers of the show, which will air on Swiss SRF-TV. He did not initially return their phone calls thinking they were soliciting him for advertisements. Once he learned about the show, he immediately jumped at the opportunity to bring publicity to Diner-ByThe-Sea as well as the area surrounding it. “It’s great for the community of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, to bring us more exposure,’’ Sand added. Arlene and Nancy met 40 years ago when they both worked at The Pier Coffee Shop, a popular seaside eatery that closed in 2008. The 68-year-olds shifted together to Diner-By-The-Sea bringing their customer base with them. The hour-long show is expected to air in October, and feature workers from around the world attempting
TAMPA, FL — It’s been nearly 20 years since Hillsborough County Commissioners voted to exclude homosexuals from a county ordinance providing civil rights protections. Last year, the commissioners seemed to move more toward a liberal view when they voted to repeal a ban on country promotions at gay pride events and festivals. The historic vote was seen by Hillsborough’s gay, lesbian and transgender community as a sign the county was ready to reverse a history of discrimination. The next chapter in that history is set
for Wednesday when commissioners will consider asking the county attorney to amend Hillsborough’s human rights ordinance to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identification. Among the protections in the amendment include employment, public accommodations, real estate transactions, and county contracting and procurement. According to the Tampa Tribune, Commissioner Kevin Beckner is sponsoring the amendment. Beckner, an openly gay man, won his seat on the commission in 2008 and four years later, he was reelected in a landslide. “I think the political winds and the social winds have changed, and I think a lot of it is attributed to individuals, whether through their families or through work, who have come to know gay individuals,” Beckner told the Tampa Tribune on Monday. “Through their relationships, they just realize that this is the right thing to do.” Beckner seems to have the four votes he needs to see the amendment written into the human rights ordinance, based on Tampa Tribune interviews Monday.

In return, the developer will dedicate $1 million to create 20 acres of wetlands at Long Key Nature Center in Davie. And it will give them more space to build, so the condo towers will not have to be as tall as anticipated. Once built, Metropica would generate an estimated $22 million a year in taxes, with $5 million going to Broward County, Moskowitz said. The rest would go to the city of Sunrise, the school district and other taxing authorities. “This is a phenomenal project that’s going to make that western part of Broward a major retail center and residential area,” Moskowitz said. “It fits in perfectly with the mall that’s already there. In terms of building, the real estate downturn is gone. Interest rates remain low. And the need for new housing is still high.” Like many projects, Metropica was delayed by the Great Recession, Moskowitz said. “For all the time we’ve waited, this is the perfect time for them to hit the ground running and build what they’ve wanted to build for the past 15, 20 years,” Sunrise Commissioner Joey Scuotto said. “I’m happy it’s finally coming. It’s going to be a nice draw. It’s all good. They want to build condos, office space, restaurants and cafés.” July 16, 2014 9

Republican commissioners Victor Crist and Chairman Mark Sharpe said they would vote with Beckner Wednesday as did Democrat Les Miller. “Whether you’re conservative or liberal or in favor of any particular lifestyle or community, the bottom line is that in this country, at this time, discrimination is unacceptable,” Crist said. Sharpe sponsored an ordinance last year to create a domestic partner registry that would have allowed unmarried individuals to make certain legal decisions for their partners. The registry was a priority for the county’s lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender community, partly because gay marriage is prohibited in the state. The registry was defeated last year in a 3-4 vote. “I’ve always said on an issue like that, no one should be discriminated against,” Sharpe said. “That’s where you start.” Even as the social climate surrounding sexual orientation has changed, political and legal institutions have been slow to adapt. According to Beckner, it is still legal in 29 states, including Florida, to fire someone because he or she is gay, and in 34 states if transgender. According to research by The Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law, 15 percent to 43 percent of the lesbian, gay and bisexual people surveyed since the mid-1990s reported experiencing unfair employment practices based on their orientation. For transgender people, 20 percent to 57 percent of respondents reported unfair employment practices. Beckner said the issue is not just one of fairness and equality; intolerance can also hurt the county’s economic development efforts. Over 90 percent of the large companies in the U.S. have non-discrimination policies that address sexual orientation and gender identification, Beckner said in the Tampa Tribune. “They are solely focused on recruiting, as well as retaining the brightest and best talent,” Beckner said. “Businesses have come to understand the importance of diversity inside their organizations. If they’re looking to relocate, they want to make sure the community they’re moving to is also respectful and welcoming of their employees.”

Perhaps it took those first two visits to allow the enormity of loss the HIV epidemic has caused to sink it. Well, it’s sunk it now. The museum, the first one dedicated to the HIV/ AIDS crisis in the world, lets its stark and tragic message speak to guests from display panels positioned throughout the facility located at 1601 NE 26th Street in Wilton Manors, on the ground floor of Wilton Station. While not a happy place, it is stunningly inspirational, and, if nothing else, spans the amazing scope of this disease. If it were not for the museum, I would never have learned that the very first cases of HIV infection were in the early 1900s in Kinshasa, the largest city in Central Africa. I would never have hard about Robert Rayford, who died in 1969 from AIDS at the ages of 16 in St. Louis, Missouri. (It wasn’t until 1987 that frozen tissue sample from his body were found to test positive for HIV.) It was here at the museum that I rediscovered the death of Rock Hudson from AIDS in 1985. I was reminded at the losses we suffered with the deaths of designer Perry Ellis and Anthony Perkins and Amanda Blake and Rudolf Nureyev and Robert Mapplethorpe and Arthur Ashe. universal ones. It is far more obvious that this is an on-going battle that does not have an easily reachable conclusion. It is made all the more difficult when you consider the damage caused by people like former Kenyan president Daniel arap Moi, who refused to advocate condom use in his country, allowing the deaths of 24 million of his citizens in the process. Or the South African president who refused to allow AZT to be distributed in his country and publically stated that HIV does not cause AIDS. It is at the World AIDS Museum that we got a real reality check with the news that the face of HIV is not longer male and gay. The new face of this horrible disease is an African woman. Globally, there are now more women with HIV than men; and 70% of those living with the virus are in Africa. The numbers by themselves are staggering enough: Since 1980, 60,000,000 people have contracted HIV and 25,000,000 have died. (June 25, 2014) Not cool. – wayne leblanc I am really pleased this article came out. I was thinking to attend Gay Days FTL, mostly because of the lack of diversity in entertainment in this town. I attended some of the parties at gay days Orlando and I did not like it at all, never went back again… I was excited to have something new in FTL, but now… I think I cant go… I cant betrayal my brothers in need of health that the government does not provide. I went to the white party years ago, it was fun and I will always remember it, I wanted to go back again but decided not to attend it anymore due to the expense around it (parking, water, transportation, etc) and mostly, because it has not evolved. This is a wake up call for the White Party to reinvent itself and for me to volunteer and win the war together, count me in again White Party. – Imannol

Re: “The Truth about Steel Gym” (May 28, 2014) My fiancé and I are opening our new business and looked into leasing the old Poverello location. The landlords have priced the units available at double per square foot that you’d pay in Las Olas. The owners are trying to vacate that section of the shopping center so they can put up a condo complex once the market rebounds. By keeping that section vacant they can write it off as a loss on their taxes, until they are ready to scrape it and build what will bring them better profits. – Johnny C.

Keeping the section vacant has no bearing on what can be written off. The building is depreciated at the same rate whether rented or not and its always better to have income to offset the depreciation by the differential between the income and the tax rate (except for the shorter depreciation life of leasehold improvements) It more likely has to do with not wanting to be legally contracted with leases when OR if they do decide to build condo’s. Steel gym, based on the story above, should aggressively litigate lease violations and withhold rent if possible. – kelly, CPA

The New Agenda
W
the darlings of mainstream media and businesses. They are tripping over themselves in an effort to reach our untouched consumer dollar. Savor the moment for it has taken several lifetimes in arrive. Any mainstream advertising that questions the power of the LGBT community to collective flex its political and economic muscle only has to look to United
Airlines to see what happens when corporate America courts and then deliberately stomps on this well-heeled minority. After wooing pink dollars in the early 1990s with one of the first advertising campaigns directed toward the gay community, UAL Corp. made millions. For years, it found out just how loyal LGBTs can be. Then, in one of the most visible anti-gay judg-
ment calls by an American corporation, the United Airlines openly fought with the city of San Francisco over an ordinance mandating benefits for same-sex partners of all employees of city contractors. The very same company that said we were special enough to warrant advertising directed at cajoling us to “Fly the Friendly Skies,” now painted us as non-equal. The LGBT community across America rallied in protest against what it saw as a false profit of industry. Gays stopped flying United en masse. They sued the airline for discrimination—and won. And in 1999, at a performance of the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, its leader symbolically returned a $15,000 sponsorship check to United, while publically endorsing American Airlines as their carrier of choice. American recognized the opportunity, and formed a special marketing team devoted to gays and lesbians. That year alone, American made $193.5 million in LGBT earnings. Now, as we enter a new period of LGBT acceptance, we are as close to total equality as we have ever been. Corporate America knows that that $800 billion in discretionary spending can be theirs for the asking. And ask they will through media vehicles such as the Agenda as we begin to take this newspaper nationwide. As gay marketer Charles Zukow, of San Francisco’s Browne Zukow Associates said: “We support those who support us.” Just as predictable however is the LGBT community’s ability to turn its collective back on those who do not treat us well. We welcome you, mainstream America. We’re the LGBT community, it’s true. But tread lightly. We are strong. We are real. And we never forget.

elcome to your first peak at the new Agenda. No longer content with bringing the finest analysis of the latest news in Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors, we’ve expanded the Agenda’s reach to all of Florida, with additional U.S. cities on the horizon. Our goal is to continue to provide you with cutting-edge commentary on LGBT politics in a fast-changing world. With multiple victories over the past years in court contests dealing with same-sex marriages in America, the LGBT community is quickly losing its secondclass status in this country to emerge into the mainstream as the single most coveted demographic in America. With discretionary and disposable income equal to 800 billion dollars, the homosexual, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community suddenly finds itself far from its former shunned economic status by mainstream businesses. What critics and right-wing fanatics formerly called “pink money” is now seen as very coveted wealth. That it has all happened within the past nine months has left some of us breathless and wide-eyed. But not at the Agenda. Here, we are prepared to lead you through the maze of wannabe suitors and political mongers to a better understanding of your own potential in a world which has suddenly discovered that, like us or not, we are a very important and hard-to-reach sub-culture of creative, intellectual and powerful individuals. Over the outcries of religious bigots and fundamental morality naysayers, we are fast becoming

Several weeks ago, MMP welcomed award-winning writer Richard Hack as our new publisher and editor-inchief for Agenda. With Richard at the helm, we have slowly changed the direction of our publications, now fully evolved into the current edition before you. In four short weeks, the newspaper has been transformed into a vital must-read for those who want to keep abreast of every element of the current push for equality in America. Your comments on the Agenda’s new content, its columns, and expanded advertising base are certainly appreciated. It is our goal to leave no stone unturned in our quest to uncover the real meaning behind the events that are reshaping our lives and giving us new freedoms. I am proud to be the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Multimeida Platforms LLC at this turning point in our history. Beginning this week, we will be increasing our circulation to surrounding cities in Florida including Orlando, Miami, Key West, Tamps, St. Petersburg and Jacksonville. In the coming months, we will expand to other states along the Eastern seaboard including Washington, DC and New York City. Eventually, our unique customized local editions will cover
the entire United States as we continue on our mission to remain the leading source of news and analysis within the LGBT community and beyond. We are partnered in this goal through resources provided by TBG Holdings, a corporation whose understanding of this marketplace is second to none. Together, we will be unstoppable in our growth potential and our value to readers like you. Neil Swartz, the CEO of TBG Holdings is proud to have invested in MMP “because it is a company that is now,” Swartz says, “and will be in the future, a Game Changer in the LGBT community. Our goal is to provide the resources to allow MMP to grow beyond its current demographic as it acquires other selected media companies.” TBG was formed by combining an accounting firm (R3 Accounting) and an investment banking consulting firm (Birch Group). R3 Accounting, led by Tim Hart, has always maintained a strong connection with individuals and companies that lead our communities in pushing the envelope for social change. A large percentage of the R3 Accounting clientele is made up of same-gender couples and people from the LGBT community. “Bobby Blair and his media company
had come to our attention as leaders and innovators in the business community,” adds Schwarts. “When TBG took a closer look at what was under the MMP hood, and the quality of the people in this company, we knew Mr. Blair had something unique and powerful that would push the envelope and become a high growth company. “We saw the challenges MMP was experiencing in the quest to take this company public and raise the capital necessary to have Bobby’s vision grow beyond Wilton Manors. TBG’s expertise in repositioning companies and giving them the resources to go to the next level would very likely make this one of TBG’s best investments to date--and in an area where they will lead the field! TBG will take MMP through the same process that worked so well on our last two transactions where the early investors’ initial investments increased from $.10/share to over $2/share once the company went public. “TBG has put its ‘money where its mouth is,’ and MMP is now positioned not only to become a public company, but defying all odds, also move forward to fulfill its tremendous potential,” Swartz said. n 1994, the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Act was implemented by the U.S. military ostensibly to allow gay and lesbian soldiers and sailors to serve in the Armed Forces of this country. It was an open secret that a large percentage of active military personnel were gay, and the DADT Act only served to further marginalize these brave soldiers. Hiding in the closet was not entirely successful for the majority of gays in the military with nearly 14,000 of them discharged for various violations of sexual policy between 1994 and 2010. Most were accused of “homosexuality or committing homosexual acts.” In 2010 during a Congressional session, Senator John McCain read from a letter signed by “over one thousand former general and flag officers.” It said: “We firmly believe that this law, which Congress passed to protect good order, discipline and morale in the unique environment of the armed forces, deserves continued support.” While Democrats spent much of that year and the next attempting to overcome Republican filibusters preventing a vote on the Defense Authorization Act that would repeal the controversial DADT Act, it wasn’t until September 20, 2011 that full repeal was in force and gays and lesbians were free to declare their sexuality without fear of reprisal from the various branches of military service.
To many, that was the end of a black period in gay history when shame and loathing were running at an all-time high against some of the bravest and most talented service men and women. Yet, no one could have predicted what the military did next to continue to discriminate against the LGBT community. A directive was signed by the military that specifically stated that should a veteran be discharged because of his or her sexual orientation, they would receive only half of their expected retirement funds. This travesty continued for two years, at which time a class-action lawsuit was brought by the ACLU on behalf of 104 former service members. The ACLU was successful in demanding that full retirement benefits were provided to these 104. But there are literally thousands of ex- military who are gay and still being treated like second-class citizens even if they were honorably discharged. Fortunately Jackie Speier, Congresswoman from California’s 14th District, has co-sponsored the Military Separation Pay Fairness Act, to provide these special retirees full compensation under the law. Parts of the 14th District include San Francisco, and San Mateo County, so Speier knows quite a few gay vets walk its ground. In addition to discharged service members who are gay, this bill also works to provide justice for transgender men and women who are caught outside the official scope of DADT. According to Speier, because of harmful and outdated regulations, transgender individuals are still barred from serving in the military. The military prohibits anyone identified as transgender for entering military service. They count on a physical examination as part of the enlistment process, and will reject anyone with any type of genital surgery. Additionally, even if the potential service member has not had surgery but identifies as transgender, the military considers this to be a mental health condition that disqualifies these people from entering military service. For those already in the military, and decide to begin the transition, the military provides no emotional and psychological support. As unreasonable and unsupported as these policies may be, Army values do not require explanation, interpretation or justification. This inequality is simply that. Discrimination based on sexuality continues unapologetically and undisguised even in this era post Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Any progress is not real progress until it includes the entire LGBT community.

August: Osage County
Dave Matthews Band
Despite the limp and lazy Meryl Streep film, “August: Osage County” remains one of the more recent classics of the stage. Having won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the Tracy Letts play follows the relationship woes of a modernday, middle class Oklahoma family named the Westons. The family patriarch disappearance brings with it a cavalcade of revelations, conflicts, and darkly humorous moments. Compared to such classics as “Long Day’s Journey into Night” and “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolff,” this play will be performed by The Studio One Theatre at FAU. 7 p.m. Studio One Theatre at FAU. 777 Glades Road. Boca Raton. 33431.
Everyone’s favorite college-friendly band comes to South Florida, ready to make audience members swoon, fall in love, and get drunk, just like the old college days. Dave Matthews Band, despite being widely lampooned by comedians and snarky hipsters alike, is one of the biggest bands in America. Having sold over 30 million records, the band reached a milestone in 2012 when their latest release, “Away from the World,” debuted number one on Billboard, making them the only band to have six albums debut as number one. Classic late nineties, early 2000s songs like “Crash Into Me” and “So Much to Say” are still heavily played on radio rotation and have become culturally significant, evoking a certain American sensibility and
time period. 7 p.m. Cruzan Amphitheatre. 601-7 Sanburys Way. West Palm Beach. 33411.
H2OMBRE: Brave the Elements Perhaps booked due to the popularity of last year’s bizarre and abstract “Slava’s Snow Show,” the Adrienne Arsht Center’s newest summer spectacular, “H2OMBRE: Brave the Elements,” shares that shows penchant for both audience interaction and relationship to the natural elements. Here, instead of snow, over 6,000 gallons of water is used each show. This Argentinian production includes electronic music, aerial acrobatics, elaborate visuals, and monstrous inflatables. The show’s heroes battle mythical beasts and rough elements on state-of-theart three-dimensional projection screens. 7:30 p.m. Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. 1300 Biscayne Blvd. Miami. 33132.

Not to be confused with Cirque de Soleil, Cirque Productions is a Pompano Beach-based entertainment company specializing in European cirque-style of performance artistry with American circus arts and Broadway theatrics. It’s possible Cirque Productions does hope you confuse them with the wildly popular Cirque de Soleil, though, and a lawsuit from Cirque de Soleil emphasizes the possible artist rip-off at play. Either way, “Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy” is an elaborate production inspired by nature’s unpredictable creations, brought to life by an international cast of soaring aerialists, spine-bending contortionists, acrobats, jugglers, and musicians. 8 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW Fifth Ave. Fort Lauderdale. 33312.

The super testosterone filled world of scripted wrestling may not have seemed like an LGBTfriendly environment some 30 years ago when it debuted, but the WWE have come to be one of the most LGBT-friendly “sports.” They even have a notable, openly gay wrestler named Darren Young. Tonight in Miami, the wrestlers battle live. Famous performers like John Cena, Randy (the Viper), Randy Orton, the Shield, Bray Wyatt, and RVD will all be in attendance, smashing chairs over each other’s backs and pile Cirque Dreams driving opponents Jungle Fantasy until they sub(7/23) mit. Gene Simmons (and his tongue) has remained a relevant part of the American music scene for decades. Best known for both their outlandish stage outfits and cartoonish make-up, KISS also boasts worldwide record sells of over 100 million. Def Leppard may belong to a slightly later era (the 80s), yet still their style and hard rock sensibility matches with KISS. Hit songs such as “Pour Some Sugar on Me” and “Let’s Get Rocked” helped Def Leppard become an American household name. Both bands relish in the stage show, putting on elaborate, pyro-technic infused performances while still indulging in their hard rock roots. The two combined, on a summer tour, promises to electrify any of their multitudes of fans in attendance. 7 p.m. Cruzan Amphitheatre. 601-7 Sanburys Way. West Palm Beach. 33411.

LeAnn Rimes rose to prominence on the American country music landscape at the tender age of 13. Her first single, “Blue,” drew comparisons to Patsy Cline and enjoyed massive country music success. Her next album broke through the pop market as well, with the major hit “How Do I Live” spending 69 weeks on Billboards Hot 100. Since her heyday, Rimes has released both pop and country albums, all with respectable numbers. Her active tweeting has caused some dramatic Twitter issues in her life, but for the most part Rimes has remained a pleasant and engaging musician. 8 p.m. Mardi Gras Casino. 831 N. Federal Highway. HEALTH BY PETER JACKSON, CPT
ASK THE FITNESS MAN BUILDING MUSCLE: HIGH REPS OR LOW REPS? Q: I want to build muscle and gain size quickly. Should I be doing high reps or low reps? What’s the difference? –Eric C., Pompano Beach A: The short answer is this: low reps of 1 to 5 (in combination with explosive moves and longer rest periods of 1-3 minutes) are ideal for building strength and power while higher reps in the 8 to 12 range (in a fasterpaced training regimen with shorter rest periods of 30 to 90 seconds between sets) are best for hypertrophy (muscle growth). Choose a weight that allows you to reach failure in each range. However, there’s much more to building muscle than how many reps you perform. The three critical factors are nutrition, rest and the volume of work
performed in the gym — that is, the total number of sets multiplied by the total number of reps. High volume workouts have been proven by exercise scientists to release more of the anabolic hormones which are vital for muscle growth. So many guys at the gym complain about hitting a plateau and finding it difficult to make gains. The common reason is usually that they are doing the same familiar exercises in the same order with the same number of reps. The reason they can’t make gains is that their muscles have adapted to the routine and need to be “shocked” and “confused” in order to grow. Muscles are made up of different fiber types which respond differently to stimulation, so the best approach
is to change constantly not only intensity and volume levels but the exercises themselves, making sure the target muscle is worked from different angles. This style of training, called Periodization, has been scientifically proven to be effective in muscle gains. Your program in a given week might look like this: Workout #1: 6-8 reps, Workout #2: 8-10 reps and Workout #3: 10-12 reps. Again, for the lower rep ranges you will want to go heavy with the weights and progressively lighter with the higher repetition sets. Be sure to rotate through different exercises. Use this training protocol over a 12-week period, track your results and I’m sure you’ll experience the gains you are seeking.

Combine 3 egg yolks, 1 Tablespoon of coffee, sugar, and Cognac in a large mixing bowl. Beat for 2 to 3 minutes. Add the Mascarpone and beat 3 to 5 minutes until the consistency is smooth. In another bowl, combine the 3 remaining egg whites and a pinch of sugar. Beat like mad until mixture forms stiff peaks, and then gently fold into the Mascarpone mixture. Pour rest of the coffee into a “dipping” dish with the rum, and dip each Lady Finger, and layer them on the bottom of a serving dish. Spread 1/3 of Mascarpone mixture over that and sprinkle with cocoa. Continue layering and finish with a Mascarpone layer. Sprinkle with the shaved chocolate and refrigerate one hour before serving.

y partner Vero is French, but her grandmother was Italian, and like all Italian “mamas” she ruled over the roost…Tiramisu is the dessert she would always bring to the table after the eternal leg of lamb à la Provençale we had every Sunday. She taught me this one, and it’s real easy ‘cause you don’t actually “bake” this. It’s simply layers of coffee-soaked biscuits and sweet mixture of mascarpone cheese and eggs and sugar. Cocoa powder is sifted on top (and sometimes between the layers) for the garnish and it’s also a bitter counterpoint to the sweetened cheese mixture. To prepare the biscuit layer, ”Boudoirs” (light, finger-sized sponge cakes, you call ladyfingers here in the States) are soaked in espresso or strong coffee, often with an addition of flavorful liquor such as sweet Marsala wine or dark rum. Loads of variations for tiramisu exist. Some chefs use sponge cake or yeasted breads, like panettone, in place of ladyfingers. Other liquors are often used instead of the traditional Marsala wine in both the coffee and the cheese mixture, including dark rum, Madeira, port, brandy and cognac, I have even experimented with “Bailys Irish cream.” So you can choose, and as I always say, “you are the chef.”

MIND YOUR MANORS
I
n the shell of what not too long ago was Pinche Taquereia has bloomed Mind Your Manors, a festive burger/salad/sandwich bar with an interesting ambience and menu. With outside casual outside seating separated for the elegant inside dining area, MYM as they’ve dubbed themselves might very well have latched onto a concept that may find a following on the Drive. Part of the issue with MYM’s location is a rent which is part of the recent price gauging taking place on the Drive by landlord making any new business hard pressed to generate enough income out of the gate to cover that rather large base, let only make a profit. At MYM, the push is to offer some reasonable appetizers to tempt you into travelling further along on the menu for more upscale items. On our recent drop in, we tried the Smoked Salmon Bruschetta ($10), a delightful blend of the fresh fish mixed with capers, onions, sundried tomatoes and fresh chopped basil in a deliciously light lemon feta dressing. The latter was drizzled, but never overwhelmed, the four toast points liberally topped with shredded Parmesan cheese. A delicious choice. While we’re not big fans of Portobello cap mushrooms, our guest tried the Stuff Mushrooms ($6), and ate every one. When you think Portobello, you think a three-to-four inch round King of the mushroom family. As presented here, it’s more baby button mushrooms and stems in size, with a healthy portion of eight, plated over lettuce. The stuffing here is cream cheese and sour cream/ scallion mixture that’s topped with melted mozzarella cheese and chopped bacon and fried. While the bacon failed to be obvious either in taste or delivery, the stuffed mushrooms still got a glowing review from our guest. We tackled a large Buffalo Chicken Sandwich ($10.50) that featured beer

battered and fried chicken strips tossed in blue cheese dressing and melted Swiss cheese that dripped from the pressed Cuban bread in a man-sized serving that defies eating in one seating. Yes, we would definitely order it again. It came served with tater tots that were extraordinary and deserve a special mention here. Available as Big Boy Tator Tots ($6) on the side dish menu, these are three-inch long logs of flavor whose crispy fried exterior doesn’t prepare you for the soft, creamy potato hidden inside. Tasting something like twice-baked potatoes, these Big Boy Tator Tots more than lived up to their name, and deserve a special return trip just to revisit this taste treat! There are several pricier menu items here that surprised with their delicate flavor. We tried the Soft Shell Crab Sandwich ($17), a rarity on any menu. Served on Ciabatta bread with lettuce and tomato, the entrée included two soft-shell crabs, deep-fried and covered in a savory remoulade sauce. While the price seems high for a sandwich, give this one a chance if you enjoy this seldom seen soft-shell crab delicacy, nicely presented. There are unsampled Burgers on the menu as well that declared themselves as a “trio of meats.” Exactly which meats we cannot say, but from afar they appeared to be thick and juicy accompanied by a heap of golden brown hand-cut fries. Yum. There are variations with Brie cheese and caramelized onions, chipotle mayo and pepper jack cheese, or any other combo you might care to suggest. At $14, they seemed on the pricey side. And as we all know too well, pricey on the drive never brings in business. Mind Your Manors is definitely worth a visit: for the food, the flavor, and the always-entertaining people watching on the Drive. Go and tell them the Agenda sent you.

I
f you are one of the few people who missed the 2011 James Franco vehicle “The Rise of the Planet of the Apes”, the more successful of the 21st century “Planet of the Apes” franchise reboots (the other being the humiliating 2001 Tim Burton “Planet of the Apes” remake with Mark Wahlberg), the first couple of minutes of “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” directed by Matt Reeves (“Let Me In,” “Cloverfield”), does a decent job of filling in the blanks. Those blanks include a simian virus that decimated much of the human population, unleashed by a greedy pharma corp anxious for profits from a potential treatment for Alzheimer’s.
Through the wonders of CGI and various computer generated apps, the apes, led by talking chimp Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his close associate, the aggressive Koba (Toby Kebbel), exist relatively peacefully in the woods, hunting other wildlife for nourishment. But the arrival of a group of humans, including Malcolm (Jason Clarke), Ellie (Keri Russell) and Malcolm’s son Alexander (Kodi SmitMcPhee) threaten the balance between man and beast. The man portion of the equation is desperate to reactivate a shutdown dam near the forest to restore their diminishing power supply in what remains of San Francisco.
Full of the kinds of messages one would expect in our current (human) political climate about how fear makes others follows (a page ripped from the Republican playbook) and the intrinsic value of trust, “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” gives the audience a lot to think about while watching the outstanding special effects and action sequences. Finally, a true summer blockbuster has dawned.
T
hose waiting for the proper follow-up to Zach Braff’s amazing directorial debut “Garden State” will have to wait a little longer. His new movie, “Wish I Was Here” (Focus), doesn’t get
us there. In the tradition of the Coen Brothers’ “A Serious Man,” Jill Soloway’s “Afternoon Delight” and Gillian Robespierre’s “Obvious Child,” “Wish I Was Here” is a “Jewy” (a term used by the aforementioned Soloway) dramatic comedy about questioning everything from religion and the existence of God to family and responsibility to careers and personal happiness, and more. Failed actor Aiden (Braff, who played gay in 2000’s “Broken Hearts Club”) and his half-Jewish wife Sarah (a decent Kate Hudson) send their daughter Grace (Joey King) and son Tucker (Pierce Gagnon) to yeshiva, a costly
tribute as reverent and celebratory as the informative doc “Life Itself” (Magnolia), based on his memoir. It’s also appropriate that Steve James, a filmmaker who’s 1994 doc “Hoop Dreams” was one of Mr. Ebert’s favorites, should be the person helming “Life Itself.” Ebert’s story is as fascinating and powerful as the best filmmaking. An only child from Southern Illinois, he developed into a wellrespected journalist while still an undergrad. His love of writing led him to grad school in Chicago where he got a job at the SunTimes newspaper, leading to not only a career as one of the most beloved film critics of his generation, but also a Pulitzer Prize. Director James expertly interweaves intimate film footage from as recent as 2013 (shortly before Ebert’s death) with an
array of clips from the critic’s storied past, including his coverage of the Cannes Film Festival, as well as his contentious TV pairing with the late Chicago Tribune film critic Gene Siskel. It was, of course, through Siskel and Ebert’s film criticism programs, including “Sneak Previews,” among others, that the duo became international superstars and their thumbs up/thumbs down rating system became their trademark. The interviews, including a majority with Ebert’s widow Chaz, as well as those with fellow journalists, film critics, close friends and family members, flesh out the portrait of the man. But it’s the unforgettable scenes with Ebert himself, at the end of his life, as cancer took its devastating toll on him, that make “Life Itself” well worth experiencing.

heavy and emotionally draining material. Braff begins things on a high comedic note, in a scene involving an overflowing “swear jar,” followed by another amusing scene at an audition where he runs into Paul (gay actor Jim Parsons in what is a subtle nod to “Garden State”), before switching gears. What we are left with is indecisive self-indulgence with moments of authenticity (the hospital scene with Grace and Gabe, for instance) and wayward wackiness (oy vey, there’s an ancient rabbi on a Segway!). An admirable, if overly long achievement, Braff also deserves praise for the way he works modern poetry into the film. See “Wish I Was Here” if you don’t go in with great expectations. It’s fitting that Roger Ebert, a man who loved and devoted his life to film, should be given a

private religious school whose tuition is paid for by Aiden’s father Gabe (a restrained Mandy Patinkin). But things are about to change. Gabe, whose cancer was in remission, is sick again. This time it looks worse than before and Gabe’s unable to continue being Aiden’s kids’ benefactor. With that as the backdrop, Aiden has to make serious life choices. Does Aiden give up his dream? Do they send the kids to public school or home-school them? Can Aiden get his socially awkward genius brother Noah (Josh Gad of “The Book of Mormon”) to make peace with their father before he dies? These are just a few of the somber issues facing Aiden. The trouble is that Braff can’t decide just how serious he wants to be here. It’s an important decision because he is dealing with

t may be the middle of July, but it’s not too early to start thinking about the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, a busy travel time during which a little advance planning is needed. Stuff your suitcase instead of your stomach this holiday season, and take a trip during Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 27—30. Pied Piper has a group charter aboard the Celebrity Silhouette leaving from Fort Lauderdale right after Thanksgiving on November 30 and sailing through Dec. 7. Prices range from as low as $600 (inside cabin) to suites priced from $1,900 to $8,300. This is the 15th annual postThanksgiving cruise for Pied Piper and its most popular cruise of the year. Rather than taking over an entire ship, Pied Piper books a block of tickets and then arranges special events for its party. While you can book on the same ship separately, you won’t be part of Pied Piper’s additional events and activities. Pied Piper hosts a welcome aboard party, comedy and movie events, a costume party, a private beach party in one of the tropical cruise ports, nightly cocktail gatherings, and singles mixers. All the amenities are included in the cruise fare. Greg Louganis and Von

Smith will be the featured headline entertainers for this year’s cruise. The eight-day cruise visits Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Jamaica and Haiti. Since two of the four stops are known to be vehemently antigay, you may want to forgo land excursions on those days. Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is an event as iconic in New York as the New Year’s Eve ball drop. This year marks the 86th annual parade. Instead of watching on the TV at home, why not take it in live and in person? NYCTrip.com offers a package featuring brunch at Del Frisco’s Steak House with eye-level views of the parade! Packages start at $1,009 per person. The package also includes; four nights at a midtown Manhattan hotel, a sightseeing tour of holiday window displays, free admission to your choice of the Empire State Building observatory, Museum of the City of New York or an
NYC Water Taxi Statue of Liberty Flex Pass. That package also includes a choice of admission to the American Museum of Natural History, Metropolitan Museum of Art or Top of the Rock observation deck as well as discount coupons to a number of merchants and attractions. Celebrate the holiday where it all began, on Cape Cod and spend the weekend in Provincetown. Traffic to the Cape will be much lighter than in summer months, parking will be plentiful (and usually free) and, while many shops will be closed, the ones that will be open will have great deals since this is the last weekend for store owners to clear out merchandise. For historical reference, visit Plymouth, an hour and a half away. Here’s where the Mayflower pilgrims disembarked in 1620, and where the Thanksgiving tradition was born. Plymouth also boasts historic homes including the Mayflower Society House,
an18th century mansion overlooking Plymouth Harbor. Tours take place daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. At Plymouth Bay Winery owners Michael and Pam Carr are eager to share stories and recipes and offer tastings. Afterwards, head down the street to Plymouth Winery, and sample some more grape, ask for a sample of her Diamond Wine, which has the intense flavor of fresh table grapes. Visit Plimoth Plantation, a living history museum (retaining the original spelling of the town), which offers a chance to explore a 17th century village and experience how the Pilgrims and Native Americans lived. Back in PTown, on Nov. 26, it’s the 104th annual lighting of the Pilgrim Monument. The festivities begin at 5 p.m., with the lighting taking place at 7.pm.
