As Conn mentions, Pridefest is significant in a number of ways. While LGBT characters have been featured in games before–even as a protagonist in, for example, My Ex-Boyfriend the Space Tyrant–this seems to be an exception to the rule, and certainly not the norm. Pridefest may be the first video game to unambiguously cater to the LGBT community as a whole.

his power and give them more authority, including the ability to hire the police chief. Moore, who played softball at Latta High School, walked up and down the streets for days before the vote, explaining her side of the story and calling for change. Last month, 69 percent of 475 voters approved of taking the mayor’s power away. Now essentially a figurehead, it’s not clear what he is going to do next. He ran unopposed in 2013 and still has three years left on his term. When Moore returned to work June 30, people honked their car horns and gave her thumbs up as she drove around in her police SUV, according to television reports. When an AP reporter rode around with her recently, nearly everyone waved as she drove by. “Crystal is a good chief and she loves this town,” said Taylor, the councilman. “It made me proud of my town to see everybody come out for her the way they did.” The fight left Moore with nearly $20,000 in legal bills. About $8,000 has been pledged from people through a Facebook site, but that still leaves a lot of debt for someone who makes less than $40,000 a year running a 10-officer department. So the town is arranging a yet-to-be determined fundraiser, Moore said. “It’s just remarkable,” she said. “I can’t ever thank this place enough.”

dozen people gathered at her office in support on the day she was let go, CBS News reported. The support for Moore grew when Town Councilman Jarett Taylor started secretly recording his conversations with the mayor, which is legal in South Carolina. Taylor said he learned not to trust the mayor because he would tell him something, and later deny he ever said it. In a conversation released to reporters after Moore was fired, the mayor said: “I’d much rather have somebody who drank and drank too much taking care of my child than I had somebody whose lifestyle is questionable around children, because that ain’t the damn way it’s supposed to be.” Bullard, who has avoided reporters for much of the past three months, told The Associated Press that was him on the tape. He offered no apologies. “I don’t like the homosexual ways portrayed in front of children,” Bullard told AP by telephone Thursday. “You can’t explain to a 5-year-old why another child has two mommies or two daddies.” Since the story made headlines, Bullard said he had received a stack of hate mail that was “probably an inchand-a-half thick.” Within days of Moore’s termination, the town council passed a vote of confidence in her. They also set up an election that would strip the mayor of
A social SIM game designed to appeal to the LGBT community is coming to an iOS or Android tablet near you, Atari says. Dubbed Pridefest, players will be able to “launch their very own personalized pride parade in a city of their choosing.” So, customize parade flotillas by choosing size, components, mascots and decorations, as well as surrounding structures and side attractions, which in turn feed a city happiness metric, checking off quest or challenge goals to unlock new parades, receive festival supplies or secure bonuses. Social elements of the game also include avatar customization, chatting with friends and the option to bring your parade to friends’ cities, or to join in on theirs. While there’s no specific release date yet, Atari promises this is “coming soon.” “To have [Atari] support our conference and cause, as well as bring an LGBTQ-themed game to market is a huge step toward equality in gaming,” GaymerX founder Matt Conn said in a statement. “It’s extremely important that we see these large publishers like Atari stepping up to the plate, and I’m excited that they have the courage to take the first step in supporting the community.”

LATTA, SC–When openly gay police chief Crystal Moore was fired by a mayor who condemned her lifestyle as “questionable,” she feared her two decade career in law enforcement in this town was over. Then, this conservative, small town rebelled, according to CBS News. The people of Latta, who voted overwhelmingly for a state amendment banning gay marriage eight years ago, turned against the mayor, stripped him of his powers and the town council rehired Moore. They said her dedication to the town mattered more than her sexual orientation. When push (by the mayor) came to shove (by the town), it was Moore civic spirit and responsibility to Latta that made the difference. In 1989, when Hurricane Hugo tore through Latta, Moore was a high school student working part-time as a police dispatcher, and helped cut downed tree limbs to clean up the debris. This February, when an ice storm crippled the town and left it without power for days, Moore piled her officers in her SUV and checked on as many people as she could. “That’s Crystal. All she does is help people. I don’t get why he fired her. Maybe it’s the ignorant people who talk the loudest. She was the same great Crystal yesterday as she is today, and she’ll be the same person tomorrow,” said lifelong Latta resident Dottie Walters. Mayor Earl Bullard vehemently denied that he fired Moore because she was gay. Instead, he said she was dismissed for “sheer insubordination” during the three months he was her boss. Moore said she hadn’t received a single reprimand during her career until Bullard presented her with seven the day she was fired in April. Word of her termination spread fast in this tobacco hub of about 1,400 people, just off Interstate 95. About two

First Pro Gay Marriage Case Is Decided in Florida; Ruling Applies only to Florida Keys Earlier in the week, Monroe County Circuit Judge Luis Garcia overturned Florida’s 2008 constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. But while victory parties are planned across the state, this decision is such a narrow victory for gay rights proponents in Florida, that caution must be exercised regarding its importance. The ruling only applies to Monroe County (the Florida Keys), but with four cases in the state racing towards decisions, it’s a good sign of things to come, and yet another entry in a long winning streak for gay marriage victories across the country. Judge Garcia ordered the Monroe County Clerk’s Office to start issu-

All laws passed by the legislature or by popular support must pass the scrutiny of the United States Constitution, to do otherwise diminishes the Constitution to just a historical piece of paper.” The ruling comes in a challenge filed in April by Aaron Huntsman, 43, and William Lee Jones, 42, a same-sex couple from Key West, Fla. Several Democratic politicians, including gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist, had nothing but praise for the judge’s decision. “This is a great step toward equality in Florida,” Crist said via Twitter. Gay marriage opponents condemned it: “This disrespects just under 5 million voters and effectively disenfranchises them. It shows no regard for the rule of law or the constitution,” said John Stemberger, president of the Florida Family Policy Council, which led the referendum campaign in 2008. more impactful challenges are pending in a federal court in Tallahassee seeking to force Florida to allow samesex marriage and recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states.
Florida Keys Not Open for Same-Sex Weddings Quite Yet KEY WEST, FL—With all the hoopla over the court victory at the hands of Judge Luis Garcia, there has been the expected stream of phone calls to Key West businesses about scheduling wedding events in the Southern most land in the continental US. Guy Ross, executive director of the Key West Business Guild, says finality in the case is a marathon, not a sprint. “I don’t think anyone is rushing around here right now ordering baby’s breath at Keys florists,” Ross said. “This has got to go through the appellate process -- my guess is that we’re looking at least a year.” But he’s glad Monroe County is leading the state’s conversation when it comes to same-sex marriage. “We’ve anticipated that marriage equality will happen in Florida and that Key West would lead the way,” Ross said. With the potential to make $1.5 billion on the same-sex marriage business, restaurants, bed and breakfasts, hotels, ministers, party planners and musicians are primed to take their cut. But first it takes the required legislation, which, as our cover story says, is not happening anytime soon. Daniel Kolbe, owner of Southernmost Photography and Wedding Planning, says he already does about five to 10 commitment ceremonies a year. In his opinion, a wedding is a wedding. “They’re the same,” he said. “From the actual ceremony to the guests, you wouldn’t know the difference.” Kolbe, married with children, believes the forward momentum for equality has been overdue. “Love is love. Why should people’s stupidity stop it? They should have a right to be miserable like the rest of us married people.”

PRESIDENT SIGNS NONDISCRIMINATION EXECUTIVE ORDER

is the case. The Employment Non-Discrimination Act passed the Senate last year with added Republican support. However, the act has not made it to the floor of the Republican controlled House. The resulting void forced Obama to make an executive move that bypassed Congress entirely. “We’re here to do what we can to make it right,” Obama said. While the executive order comes as no surprise, a section of it, dealing with an exemption for religious organizations, does. With the recent Hobby Lobby court ruling that allowed for some religionbased small businesses to receive special exemptions within the federal health care law, there has been opposing pressure for such a clause within any executive order. The President decided to maintain a provision that allows religious groups with federal contracts to hire and fire based upon religious identity. He did not, however, give them any exception to consider sexual
orientation or gender identity. Churches also are able to hire ministers as they see fit. Obama said that 18 states and more than 200 local governments already ban employment discrimination based on sexual orientation, as well as a majority of Fortune 500 companies. More surprising was the President’s sidebar note that more states allow samesex marriage than prohibit gay discrimination in hiring. “It’s not just about doing the right thing, it’s also about attracting and retaining the best talent,” Obama said. The government estimated that some 24,000 companies and 28 million workers would be affected by the executive order. That’s equal to onefifth of the US workforce. There aren’t many religious organizations contracting with the federal government, the few that do provide some unique services, including overseas relief and development programs and re-entry programs for inmates leaving federal prisons.

ASHINGTON, DC — It was weeks overdue, and took a sideline position to world affairs, but last Monday President Barack Obama signed an executive order giving employment protection to gay and transgender workers in the federal government and its contracting agencies. In signing the executive order, which was originally announced several weeks ago, Obama said that he made the decision to move by executive order after being convinced by advocates of what he called the “irrefutable rightness of your cause.” During the signing ceremony in the White House East Room, Obama said “America’s federal contracts should not subsidize discrimination against the American people,” He said it is unacceptable that being gay is still a firing offense in most places in the United States. While many in the country are shocked that no anti gay discrimination law is already in place in this country, such

ELBOURNE, AU— The International AIDS Society has confirmed that at least six highlevel researchers and AIDS experts were among those killed on the Malaysia Airlines flight downed Thursday over volatile eastern Ukraine. In confirming the deaths, the society’s president, Francoise Barre-Sinoussi, made note that her predecessor, AIDS researcher Joep Lange was among them. “The International AIDS society has today confirmed the devastating news that at least six delegates travelling to the AIDS 2014 conference in Melbourne were on board, including our former president, Joep Lange, and his partner, Jacqueline van Tongeren,” she said. “The extent of our loss is hard to comprehend and express. Our colleagues were travelling because of their dedication to bringing an end to AIDS. We will honor their commitment and keep them in our hearts as we begin our program on Sunday.” The other victims include Pim de Kuijer of STOP AIDS NOW!, Lucie van Mens and Maria Adriana de Schutter of AIDS Action Europe, and Glenn Thomas of the World Health Organization. Incoming International Aids Society President Chris Beyer said organizers want to honor their fallen colleagues’ work. The theme of this year’s conference, which started last Sunday, is “stepping up the pace” in the fight against AIDS. Beyer said this tragedy couldn’t be allowed to slow them down. “We discussed this of course, among ourselves, our friends, our colleagues, and what we agreed was that the colleagues we lost were people who committed their lives and their work to HIV/AIDS, and they would want this conference to go forward and that they would want us to have them in our hearts during the conference,” he said.

o there I was, just standing around minding my own business at one of my favorite spots under a banyan tree near the public library. “I wonder how much this is going cost us?” a woman’s shrill voice asked. “Probably my first nut,” a man answered. “You know those fags get what they want. Okay, I admit, I was curious and looked over. I saw the waddling rearend of a chubby woman in a one-piece dress that grew shorter with each step. Her companion, about 20 years her senior, was struggling to keep up with the jaunty stepped woman. It was then that he caught sight of me watching. “Whatcha looking at,” he glared in my direction. “I..um…” was the best answer I could muster. “You one of those fags that are getting married?” he asked. It was one of those questions that caught me so off guard that I began to laugh. Grandpa did not like it. “You think I’m going to stand around and get taxed pee dry to pay for your wedding? Is that it? he continued. “Well, you can just go…..” and then I lost track of his sound, muttering to himself as he shuffled back across the street. Now I bring this all up because you know there was no way that I was going to not share that encounter with you. What I eventually took from the

conversation was that the couple somehow thought that if same-sex marriages were allowed in the state, that their taxes would go up to foot the bill. It may seem like a logical conclusion if you figure in benefits which married straight couples get that unmarried gay couples don’t. And it is true that the state will have to shell out some extra coins to cover that particular shortfall. But this is not to say that same-sex marriages in Florida won’t be profitable. Correction, it will be a gold mine. Here’s why: When gays and lesbians marry, they are extremely loyal to their relationships. They are not making this commitment lightly, and certainly plan on staying together until that death us do part business. And then there’s the fact that married gays require less financial assistance and Medicare spending. And let’s not forget the increases in state and federal tax coffers when wedding ceremonies are planned—by the tens of thousands. I saw it happen in Provincetown where I was living when Massachusetts authorized gay weddings. There were thousands and thousands of couples that descended on to the town. They were more obvious there than in most large cities because Provincetown is a tiny place, and gets quickly clogged with foot flesh. There were the hotel rooms and the church rentals, the gowns and tuxedos and tuxedos and tuxedos. And don’t

get me started on the grandeur of the cakes and the flowers, the bands, the catering, and, did I mention, tuxedos. BIG BUCKS. And that’s just in tourism dollars. When married gays settle, the roost. They paint the picket fence “Fresh White” and plant their geraniums (the one with those florescent orange/ red flowers). They adopt their children, perfectly clothed in new outfits of course, and proceed to play house in the suburbs. Fortune 500 corporations know this, which is why they actively recruit gays for their workforce. It’s all that is unique about the LGBT community that these employers (and others like them) want to milk for profits. For LGBT workers, your time has come. Businesses want to play fair with their most valued employees, but it’s a lot harder when the law is not on your side. With a little luck, and a lot of convincing, that goal of equal rights is not only possible, but likely. It will be then that we smile the widest. For only then will the heterosexual community who has been so intimidated by the prospect of husband and husband, wife and wife, realize they failed to spot that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow flag. Given a few years and the LGBT community will be the new foundation of the economy. It’s called getting the last laugh….Until next week….

CONNECTICUT SUPREME COURT RULES SAME-SEX COUPLE’S RIGHT PRE-DATE MARRIAGE
11
HARTFORD, CT — The Connecticut Supreme Court, in a remarkable decision last Wednesday, said that the some legal rights of same-sex couples predate the approval of Civil Unions in 2005 and gay marriage in 2008 by the state. Legal analysts are calling the ruling the first of its kind in the country. The state Supreme Court issued a 6-0 decision overturning two lower court rulings and allowing a widow to sue a doctor in a medical malpractice case for the death of her spouse and the loss of her spouse’s companionship and income. The alleged malpractice occurred from 2001 to 2004, a time when only married couples were allowed to sue for loss of spousal “consortium.” “It’s another example of the Connecticut Supreme Court leading the way in recognizing that the love and commitment of same-sex couples is exactly the same as different-sex couples,” said Ben Klein, a lawyer for Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders in Boston told the Associated Press. “This will be an influential and important decision that other courts will look to.” Margaret Mueller and Charlotte Stacey both worked in the insurance industry and had been

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—A threejudge panel of the 10th US Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver on Friday upheld a federal judge’s ruling that Oklahoma’s ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional. It is the latest in a string of victories
across the country in favor of same-sex marriage that will suffer the same response—further appeals, and a sharp rebuke from conservative Republicans. The Oklahoma court case is a decade old, having been first filed by two couples--Sharon Baldwin and Mary Bishop, and Gay Phillips and Susan Barton - shortly after 76 percent of Oklahoma voters backed the ban in 2004. “There are so many gay and lesbian Oklahomans who are celebrating, and they have every right to, because this is a victory for all of us,” Baldwin said, according to the Associated Press. “We may be the people at the front of the line holding the flag, but never think for one minute that there’s not a huge army behind us. We are far from alone in this,” she said. Conservative politicans in this ultra conservative state were just as quick to fall back on now-familiar rhetoric in defense of their position. “Today’s ruling is another instance of federal courts ignoring the will of the people and trampling on the right of states to govern themselves,” Republican Gov. Mary Fallin said in a statement. “In this case, two judges have acted to overturn a law supported by Oklahomans,” she said, while missing the point that the ban is being judged unconstitutional. State Rep. Sally Kern, a longtime critic of gay marriage who drew national attention in 2008 when she said homosexuality posed a greater threat to the U.S. than terrorism, urged Fallin to be an example for other states. “It’s time that we the people begin to stand up for morality and God’s standards,” said Kern, R-Oklahoma City. “If our governor

SALT LAKE CITY, UT--Utah will go directly to the Supreme Court to challenge a federal appeals court ruling that overturned its samesex marriage ban, the state attorney general’s office announced Wednesday. The office of the state attorney general selected to jump another review of the ban from the full 10th US Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver, which would have originally been the appellate process. Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes’ action had less to do with legal maneuvering than it does with financial efficiency since the state estimates that it will cost about $300,000 to defend its case before the Supreme Court—about the same amount that an lower court appeal would have cost. The Supreme Court is in recess and will not consider petitions filed this summer until it returns to session in mid-September. If the justices take up Utah’s case, it would likely be heard in early 2015 with a decision by the end of next June. Gay marriage briefly was legal in Utah after a federal judge ruled in December that a state ban on gay matrimony violated the Constitution. That decision was put on hold by the Supreme Court pending appeals but not before more than 1,300 same-sex couples married. Their status remains in limbo.
partners for 23 years at the time of Mueller’s death in 2009 at the age of 62. They had a civil union in Connecticut in 2005 and were married in Massachusetts in 2008, just before the Connecticut Supreme Court started to allow gay marriages. Mueller was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2001. In 2005, however, Mueller and Stacey learned the diagnosis was wrong and she actually had appendix cancer. Mueller died in 2009 at age 62. Stacey said her death could have been prevented if the original diagnosis had been correct. Mueller sued for malpractice, and a jury issued a $2.4 million verdict in her favor against one doctor, Iris Wertheim, after her death, said Stacey’s lawyer, Sean McElligott. Another doctor named in the lawsuitIsidore Tepler, settled the malpractice claims. The trial court and the state Appellate Court ruled against Stacey in her effort to sue Wertheim for loss of consortium, saying Stacey and Mueller weren’t married as required under the law. “The Supreme Court sought fit to rectify this injustice,” said Stacey, 63, according to Associated Press. “It validates my loss of my spouse for the fact that what I suffered for the seven years that Marge had cancer ... and all that I gave up and all that I don’t have because she died because of the malpractice.” The Supreme Court said it wasn’t legally possible for Stacey and Mueller to be married or in a civil union at the time of the misdiagnosis, and the justices accepted the couple’s contention that they would have been married long ago if allowed. “Society has come to accept the view that committed same sex couples ... are entitled to the same social and legal recognition as committed opposite sex couples,” Chief Justice Chase T. Rogers wrote in the ruling.

She has been nominated for multiple Grammys, including Song of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Known for its comforting and delicious food, le patio has been a quiet little staple of Wilton Manors for six years. Opened by a French lesbian couple in 2008, le patio boosts some of the finest, most customer-friendly food on the Drive. Favorite dishes include lobster ravioli, shepherd’s pie, chicken quesadillas, and patio house lasagna. Desserts are just as nice with a special poached pear and roasted almond crumble and a crème brulee the highlights. Pete Wentz has been a tabloid fixture and mega-celebrity thanks to the once underground turned mainstream group Fall Out Boy. In 2005, the group broke through when their album “From Under the Cork Tree” produced the major hits “Sugar, We’re Going Down” and “Dance, Dance.” They took a three-year hiatus to explore other projects yet regrouped in 2013, gathering more success with their latest album, featuring the mega smash “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up).” Emo-pop or not, Fall Out Boy has been one of the more interesting elements of the music scene for the past decade. Apparently, both Pam Bondi and Luis Garcia are equally misinformed. It is true that in 2008, 62 percent of voters approved a Constitutional amendment that banned same-sex marriage in Florida— although the vote barely exceeded the 60 percent needed for passage. Fast forward to 2014. A lot of things have changed in the old orange grove. Now, according to the latest polls performed by Public Policy Polling, 75% of Florida residents favor allowing same-sex marriage in the state. Sounds like a majority of voters, Luis. And more than voted to put Pam into her office in Tallahassee in the first place. Even so, the Florida court cases, including the Garcia finding, will all eventually make their way onto the calendar of the US Supreme Court during the next session. That would make an official decision on the issue sometime next June. That’s right—June. As in nearly a year from now. Just enough time to plan a wedding.
15
Huntsman-Jones hope for a quickie on the steps of City Hall. A strange creature, this Pam Bondi. She of the long blonde hair and tailored outfits, two divorces and a on-again, off-again current relationship, who wrote in court filings that to allow samesex marriage would hurt the state’s existing marriage laws. She also commented that “Florida’s marriage laws … have a close, direct and rational relationship to society’s legitimate interest in increasing the likelihood that children will be born to and raised by the mothers and fathers who produced them in stable and enduring family units.” This from the mouth of a twice divorced woman. Garcia, in making his ruling said, “This court is aware that the majority of voters oppose same-sex marriage, but it is our country’s proud history to protect the rights of the individual, the rights of the unpopular and the rights of the powerless, even at the cost of offending the majority.”

e love Aaron Huntsman and William Lee Jones. Well, alright, we haven’t actually met them in person, though in the photos we’ve seen of the pair of bartenders from Key West, they look respectable enough. No, scratch that. They look a little on the scruffy side of respectable, but there is nothing wrong with that, especially in Key West. The pair is in their early 40s, have been together for over a decade, and presumably were naïve enough to walk into the office of the Monroe County clerk and ask to get a marriage license. If you believe the published reports of the moment, they were outraged when they were denied, and filed suit to force the issue. The resulting litigation fell into the courtroom of Judge Luis Garcia, who was appointed to the bench by then-governor Jeb Bush. How’s that for surprise? Our one-time oh-so-conservative governor, who’s older brother was making a mess of the country on multiple levels, did one thing that we can point to with pride. He appointed Luis Garcia to the bench. Prior to his robes, Garcia was an assistant state attorney in Dade and Monroe Counties for seven years (1989-2000). He’s 51 years old, originally hails from Chicago, received his law degree from DePaul University in 1986, and receive his law degree from Boston’s Northeastern University School of Law three years later. DePaul is a private Roman Catholic school, which only compounds the intrigue in this case. And while DePaul is good, Northeastern is a step up on the academic ladder. It’s in Boston, after all, and you know how blue-blooded that tight circle of scholarly venues is. It’s also the school where Wendy Williams got her training in good gossip. In any case, Jeb Bush liked Garcia and we do too, though not for the reason that you’re probably thinking. True, he ruled in favor of same-sex marriage in Florida (or at least a tiny section of the state). The reason we like Garcia is that he ruled from the bench constitutionally, and not from emotion. By all accounts, Garcia is personally not in favor of same-sex marriage, but saw a wrong and attempted to make it right. Florida’s right-wing attorney general Pam Bondi allowed that moment to go unchallenged for about ten seconds, before filing an appeal and ending the

OUT OF THE SHADOW OF FORT LAUDERDALE

F
or too many years, Jacksonville, FL, has been regarded by muscle gods and hairless twinks as the ugly step-sister to Fort Lauderdale. If you haven’t paid a visit up north to our conservative neighbor, it is time to go explore. You’ll find that the party is just revving up with newfound excitement thanks to the gentrification of the Riverside, Avondale and Marco neighborhoods, just teeming with gays and lesbians. Oh, all right, perhaps “teeming” is a bit of an oversell, but as Florida’s largest city, there is absolutely no shortage of sweetie-pies and those who like them. Located along the St. Johns River, the city of 1,300,000 is flourishing economically, with affordable housing, trendy restaurants, and some fine tourist attractions including our favorite the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens (829 Riverside Ave). The Cummer (gotta love that
name) has a wide variety of European masters and American impressionists, to be sure. But head outside for the real show. The two-and-a-half acres of outside gardens along the river are a cruising paradise for those in the know. The Jacksonville Municipal Stadium (1 Alltel Stadium Place) was only constructed in 1995, but has recently undergone a $63 million renovation. Among the additions are a 25,000-squarefoot sports bar called the Bud Zone, and a 20,000-squarefoot Patio, as well as newly renovated clubs and suites. Adjacent to the stadium, on the old practice fields (used from 1995 through 2003) is a 400,000-square-foot entertainment zone known as the Pepsi Plaza. For Jaguars game days, this area includes tailgate cabanas for pregame hospitality, a corporate hospitality area, interactive games, and a stage for pregame and postgame entertainment.
On our first trip to Jacksonville many years ago, we stayed in the now-defunct Heart of Jacksonville Motel, an absolute dive that served us well for many a one-night stand. We’ve upgraded these days, and highly recommend the Crowne Plaza Jacksonville Riverfront-Downtown (1201 Riverplace Blvd, on S. Main St.). It’s an extremely gay-friendly chain hotel with a 24-hour gym that’s hard to beat for convenience. It’s close to all things relevant, and has an incredibly lavish outdoor pool overlooking the St. John River, complete with glistening bodies from the local muscle set who have taken to using it as their sunning spot du jour. For more diehard training, there is always the dependable Bailey’s Powerhouse Gym (11740 San Jose Blvd) where the men of mass congregate when they’re not showing off their eight-packs on the dance floor at The Metro (849 Willow Branch Ave between Plum and Green) in
its Disco Club. Now, here’s the deal. The Metro is actually seven clubs disguised as one, and the dance floor is just the beginning. On weekends, the Boiler Room hosts The Metro’s Dick Dancers, who take it off for tips. In Club Shadows, the fake fems do their impersonations. In the cleverly named Game Room, you’ll find pool tables, arcade and video games. For the more refined gentlemen, there’s the Rainbow Room, a intimate piano bar. Fresh air is a constant at the outdoor Tiki Bar, while Sapphos is The Metro’s very own women’s bar with a full authentically female revue. Don’t ya love it? The one-time Third Dimension 3D has simplified its name and its look. Now called In Cahoots (711 Edison Ave at Park St), the club has a different theme every night, Drag, hip hop, casino nights, and go-go girls should be enough to convince you to check in advance what’s going down. A word to the wise.

ero and I took off for San Francisco last week, and we wandered through the Castro area in search of a decent restaurant. We came upon a little jewel that’s been there “35 Shucking years” (that’s what their teeshirts said ) and we settled in with a bottle of “Sancerre” and a couple of dozen Oysters while we waited on our main dish, all the while watching the chef prepare our “Cioppino,” Our very helpful server told us the story: Cioppino was developed in the late 1800s by Italian fishermen who settled in the North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco. Originally it was made on the boats while out at sea and later it became a staple as Italian restaurants proliferated in San Francisco. This little Seafood restaurant, only slightly bigger than ours, reminded us of home. So we ordered another bottle of Sancerre. We were so impressed by this dish and it’s simple execution in a confined space that we will soon be adding it to our specials list, maybe even the menu.

BY RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN
KINGPINS PIZZA AND WINGS
B
ryan Nosal, the popular exmanager of Steel Gym, has left the fitness business to become the proprietor of Kingpins Pizza and Wings, tucked within the Manor Bowling Alleys, on 26th Street. While it may seem a bit of a stretch to move from health workouts to gooey cheese pizzas and fried chicken wings, Bryan has always been less about the workout experience and more about enjoying life. Kingpins Pizza and Wings falls into the latter category. We haven’t been to the bowling alley in quite a few years, but on a recent visit things looked like there was s convention of bowlers in town, since every lane was occupied with athletes of different calibers and talents. The one thing they seemed to share among them was a love for Kingpins food. The signature dish is, of course, pizza, and while it is handmade fresh per order and available only by the full pie, these are large pieces of work that when purchased in the biggest size (XL—18 inches) is a remarkable serving large enough for four. At a price of $12.95 for cheese, $15.95 for pepperoni, and $18.95 for a three-topping combo, it’s a fast, inexpensive reason to splurge and enjoy chowing down between gutter balls. While the toppings come in the usual array of beef, ham, the aforementioned pepp, sausage, peppers, onions, mushrooms, jalapenos, pineapple, black olives, spinach, bacon, and sliced tomatoes. When the pie is served piping hot, it’s a wonderfully gooey affair, that holds its own against the local pizza joint several blocks up the street. The pie could definitely stand for a tad more tomato sauce on the crust which tends to be overwhelmed by the cheese. Our advice is to eat this pizza quickly for the real taste enjoyment. By 20 minutes after that first bite, you’ll find the
dough has become hard, the cheese gelled, and the resulting taste experience eventually disappointing. This is not, however, unlike any other pizzas transformation from fresh to cold, and should not be the deciding factor here. A far safer choice if you plan on dining alley fresco are the tasty Chicken Wings, available in 12 flavors, including our personal favorite—the house custom mix. (Thai Hot is recommended as well). They come in portions of 10 ($8.95), 15 ($12.95), 25 ($22.95), and 50 ($39.95) wings, and are plump enough with chicken meat that five will satisfy the average appetite. Although they are not listed as signature dishes on the menu, there are an assortment of sandwiches here including a incredibly tender Philly Cheesesteak, with onions, peppers and melted provolone cheese ($9.95). The hoagie roll provides just the right amount of heft, and is repeated on the equally as hearty Italian Sausage ($8.95), again with peppers and onions. You can’t go wrong with these family favorites. Speaking of families, there’s much for the kids to enjoy here as well— Hot Dog & Fries ($4.95), Chicken Tenders & Fries ($7.95), and Fried Shrimp & Fries ($8.95). The universal problem with all the above dishes is the fries. As presented in Kingpins Pizza, they are a barely edible frozen affair that are undercooked, and do not hold up well when topped with condiments. As you can imagine, the Chili Cheese Fries ($5.95) are a limp mess of a dish that needs immediate reworking for serious consideration. But considering how tasty the majority of the remainder of this fast-food menu is, we can excuse some kinks on the way to perfection, Stick with the favorites and strikes will certainly be in your future.

M
ichael Douglas, who won a 2013 Emmy for his portrayal of Liberace in “Behind The Candelabra,” has made a career of playing unlovable characters over the course of the last 25 or so years; from Gordon Gecko in “Wall Street” and Oliver Rose in “The War of the Roses” to Grady Tripp in “Wonder Boys” and Ben Kalmen in “Solitary Man.” You can now add curmudgeonly realtor Oren Little in “And So It Goes” to that list.
Racist, sexist, anti-child and anti-canine, Oren (Douglas) doesn’t have anything nice to say about anybody, including his neighbors/tenants, his co-workers or even his own son Luke (Scott Shepherd). His deceased wife Sarah Beth was the only person he ever truly loved. That is until he meets, insults and makes nice with next door neighbor, the widowed and overly emotional lounge singer Leah (Diane Keaton). But “And So It Goes” wouldn’t
be a rom-com for the senior set if Oren didn’t go through a metamorphosis, like the caterpillars and butterflies in his granddaughter Sarah’s (Sterling Jerins) science project. Of course, Oren didn’t even know he had a granddaughter until his estranged son told him about her, shortly before going to prison for an SEC violation. And so it goes that Sarah and Leah aid in Oren’s transformation. “And So It Goes” was directed by long-time supporter of the LGBT community, Rob Reiner, the

filmmaker responsible for classics such as the standard-setting romcom “When Harry Met Sally…,” as well as “This Is Spinal Tap,” “The Princess Bride,” “Stand By Me” and “Misery.” Reiner appears to have mellowed since his `80s heyday. The fact that he had to resort to cheap physical comedy, including scenes involving a Slip’N Slide pratfall and a Rottweiler humping a giant teddy bear, indicate that he needs to find screenplays worthy of his, and his cast’s, proven talents.
after the war. Due to Lustiger’s determination to communicate the urgency of the situation to the pope, who was utterly blinded by his obsession with the defeat of the godless communists, that a resolution was eventually reached and a healing process could begin. The biggest problem with “The Jewish Cardinal,” and one that proves to be an unnecessary distraction, is that the passage of time is well documented in the faces of some characters (Pope John Paul II, for instance), while others, including Jean-Marie and Fanny are simply (and unbelievably) ageless. If you want to see a better representation of a similar type of story, see Pawel Pawlikowski’s “Ida,” currently playing in theaters. Isabelle Stead’s short film “Kosher,” about a boy and his pig, is among the bonus material.

(Audrey Dana), but also conservative Catholics. As he rises through the ranks of the church, becoming an archbishop and finally a cardinal, Lustiger becomes famous for both his short-fuse and his boundless capacity for compassion.
Throughout the film, Lustiger insists on maintaining a sort of Jewish identity, at one point referring to himself as “God’s mixed child,” declaring that he didn’t desire his fate; that it came upon him. Because of this dual heritage, Lustiger is thrust into a situation involving the insensitive establishment of a Carmelite convent on the grounds of Auschwitz (where Lustiger’s mother perished). This is an especially eyeopening segment as it portrays the Polish Catholic clergy’s ignorance about the symbolism of Auschwitz and also succeeded in reigniting anti-Semitism in Poland 50 years

If you can’t get to your gym or fitness class, then take the stairs at work, take a walk after dinner. Stay active and do anything except make excuses why you can’t exercise.
4 Watch your Body Image: Too many guys and ladies I know are hellbent on having “the perfect body”. It is called Body Dysmorphic Disorder and it is a malady most of us
suffer from at some point or another. It is reinforced by the mass media – 20 something models with 2% body fat, air-brushed to the max. These become our standards of beauty, the apex of perfection. Bull! Very few of us can live up to these unrealistic images. Your body is a work of art in progress. It is not perfect, but for god’s sake accentuate the positive with hard work and good nutrition. Learn to accept your body, imperfections
and all. You’ll live a happier life. 5) G et more sleep: Eight to ten hours of uninterrupted slumber is recommended as the norm for all of us. Sleep allows your body to recover from daily stress. It also helps your body to grow and recover after workouts and fitness activities. Try not to eat less than three hours before retiring. Restrain your alcohol intake especially before bedtime.

3) P repare food ahead of time: If your weeks tend to be crazy busy, then take some time on the
weekend to prepare food for the hectic days ahead. Make homemade granola bars, boil some eggs, whip up some smoothies, chop up and bag fresh fruits and veggies for energizing snacks. Take food to work and avoid vending machines and fast food joints! Eat out less and prepare what you eat if you are truly serious about your nutritional plan.

2) Work out smarter, not longer: Experts say that just 20 minutes of moderate resistance training a few times per week can help preserve and even build muscle as well as increase bone density and overall joint flexibility. That’s a good place to start. If you are short on time or bored with
plodding through your same old routine for hours on end, be adventurous. Try high intensity interval training (HIIT). Push yourself harder by alternating blasts of cardio with weight training for shorter periods of time, say 30 minutes per workout. Pump up the intensity of your workouts by taking shorter rest periods. Save socializing, texting and gossiping for the office. When you go to the gym you are there to work!
