ISRAEL NOW EXTENDS CITIZENSHIP TO SAME-SEX COUPLES Rep. Chris Smith
Obama Obsessed with Abortion and Gay Rights
of Israel, any Jew has the right to apply for, and be granted, Israeli citizenship. The right is extended under the new interpretation of the law that was decided upon at the urging of the Jewish Agency, was effective as of Tuesday morning, the Interior Ministry said, and several same-sex, non-Jewish partners of Jews have already applied for citizenship. One such couple received immigrant status. “The gates of Israel will from now on be open to any Jew and his family, without discrimination based on his way of life,” Interior Minister Gideon Sa’ar said in a statement. In Israel itself, marriage services for Jews are controlled by the state rabbinate, which does not perform same-sex marriages; nor is there any option of civil marriage for Jews.
UGANDA REWORKING ANTI-GAY LAW
K
AMPALA – Uganda’s tough anti-gay law, only recently dismissed for a technicality by the country’s constitutional court, is set for a rewrite according to Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni. Museveni wants to re-issue the divisive gay law but without tough penalties for consenting adults, a ruling party lawmaker said on Tuesday. Writing for Reuters, Elias Biryabarema said that the original version of the law, passed last February, punished gay sex with long prison terms and, as such, alarmed many Western donors, who contribute 20 percent to the Ugandan annual budget. “We agreed to come up with a new version that doesn’t hurt our Western friends but also protects Ugandans,” lawmaker Medard Bitekyerezo said. Homosexuality remains taboo in many socially conservative African societies where some religious groups have branded it a corrupting Western import. Both the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party and the opposition vowed to re-introduce the law after the constitutional court ruled it had been passed without the presence of the required number of lawmakers in parliament. Bitekyerezo said Museveni told an NRM meeting late
on Monday he backed its return, in a limited form. “He said he wants the law back in the house but now says if two consenting adults go into their room and decide to be stupid, let them be,” Bitekyerezo said. “What he said he doesn’t want, and which we must even increase the penalties, is recruitment of children and exploiting financially vulnerable youths,” he added. The new law would penalize the promotion of homosexuality and the “recruitment” of children and economically vulnerable groups into gay sex, Bitekyerezo said. Jacqueline Kasha, a prominent gay rights campaigner in Uganda, said the new version of the law was unnecessary. “If it’s about protecting children, we have laws in place already that can even be strengthened. No one is recruiting anyone into homosexuality. This is just a lifestyle someone is born with,” she said. According to Reuters, during the bill’s signing in February, Museveni said homosexuality was emblematic of the West’s “social imperialism” in Africa. Gay rights activists say it was actually colonial western powers who first criminalized homosexuality in many parts of the continent.

Republican Rep. Chris Smith of New Jersey says Obama is obsessed with promoting abortion and gay rights. “I do think that unfortunately there’s been an obsession by some within the administration — and that goes for the president himself — to promote the abortion agenda and the LGBT agenda in our foreign policy,” Smith said appearing on Family Research Council president Tony Perkins’ Washington Watch radio program last week. Smith spoke last week at the U.S.Africa Leaders Summit in Washington about the importance of including faith-based groups in the aid and development process in Africa which he was discussing with Perkins. Smith said abortion “is everywhere” in the Obama administration’s domestic policy as well, including Obamacare. Smith contends the Obama administration insists making abortion and gay rights as prerequisites to get foreign aid from the United States, saying most African leaders oppose such restrictions. “These issues are what drives this administration in much of our foreign policy in Africa. Many of these countries deeply resent it because they are profoundly pro-marriage and profoundly pro-life. But when your foreign aid is being limited or conditioned on those two issues, there are some, but thankfully not many, in these governments who begin to weaken.” The United States cut aid to Uganda after the passage of anti-gay laws in the country carrying harsh penalties for homosexual behavior.

EL AVIV — In what is being labeled as a ground-breaking interpretation of the Law of Return, Isreal’s Interior Ministry decided to permit non-Jewish same-sex marriage partners of Jews living abroad to immigrate to Israel and be granted Israeli citizenship, the ministry announced on yesterday Tuesday. According to a 1970 amendment to the Law of Return, “The rights of a Jew under this Law and the rights of an oleh under the Nationality Law... are also vested in a child and a grandchild of a Jew, the spouse of a Jew, the spouse of a child of a Jew and the spouse of a grandchild of a Jew.” For the first time, the right of citizenship has been extended to homosexual and lesbian legally married couples. SUNSHINE STATE Tampa Man Denied Funeral at His Own Church for Being Gay

TAMPA--Julion Evans’ friends and family were actually in the midst of his wake services at a funeral home when the pastor of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Tampa, Fla., called to say that his funeral set for the next day at the church had been canceled. Evans was a member of the church. As reported by Tampabay.com: Pastor T.W. Jenkins nixed the funeral following complaints from several churchgoers. The reason? According to Evans’ partner, Kendall Capers, it was Evans’ homosexuality and their gay marriage that just did not sit well with the church. Members had read the obituary in newspapers, which listed Capers as his husband of 17 years. They were
married last year in Maryland. Capers said that Jenkins further told the family that a funeral for a gay man would be “blasphemous.” “We can’t even have a dignified service like the next person could?” Capers said. “This is 2014, and we’re still going through this.” “Based on our preaching of the Scripture, we would have been in error to allow the service in our church,” Jenkins told local television station WFLA-TV. “I’m not trying to condemn anyone’s lifestyle, but at the same time I am a man of God, and I have to stand up for my principles.” Jenkins has served as pastor of the church since 1995, according to the church website. Its website describes the church as a “Christ centered” and “biblically based” place of worship. It allows that it is “open to visitors searching for a spirit-filled place to call home.” Evans, 42, died July 26 after a four-

year battle with amyloidosis, a hereditary disease that attacks virtually all internal organs. It had previously killed both his father and brother. A native of Tampa, Evans’ family had arranged to have the funeral at New Hope Missionary Baptist because a large crowd was expected. The church initially agreed, Capers said. But after the obit was publicized, the complaints from church members
began rolling in. Amazingly, as stated, Pastor Jenkins notified the family of the cancellation as they were attending Evans’ wake at a funeral home. The funeral home immediately agreed to allow the funeral to take place at its facility. “We were more than glad to accommodate them,” said Debra Blanchette, a funeral director for Blount & Curry. “The service went really well.”
BONDI DEFENDS HER ACTIONS CLEARWATER -- Attorney General Pam Bondi says she is not backing away from challenging rulings in favor of gay marriage in the state. Rather, she is consolidating the cases. While attending a meeting of the Republican Party’s Executive Committee in Clearwater on Monday night, Bondi faced protesters outside. “We consolidated cases,” said Bondi. “There were multiple cases going and again, you need uniformity. You need one court, the U.S. Supreme Court, that’s where Utah is going, to decide this case. That’s where it will ultimately be decided. We can’t waste taxpayers’ dollars.” While sounding plausible, her facts are not accurate. The Florida federal appeals which Bondi filed are still active, and no decision on consolidation has been made by the courts, despite her pleadings. Bondi would now like the Supreme Court to decide the fate of Florida’s same-sex couples, after spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to defend the state’s ban on such unions. In 2008, Florida voted to define marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Bondi says changing social attitudes do not affect that. “Florida voters, eight years ago, by over 60 percent, voted this into our Constitution. It’s my job as attorney general to defend it,” Bondi said.

Even with four Florida judges ruling in the past three weeks that the ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional, State Attorney General Pam Bondi has stepped in to appeal and keep samesex marriage illegal in Florida. Equality Florida, the group that sent Florida State Attorney General Pam Bondi 7,000 signed petitions asking her to “stop wasting taxpayer resources defending the state’s discriminatory exclusion of gay and lesbian couples from marriage” are not letting this one drop. On Friday, Bondi filed two motions in a state appeals court requesting a freeze on appeals by same-sex couples who are challenging Florida’s gay marriage ban. With the motions, Bondi wants the U.S. Supreme Court to decide whether states have the right to ban gay marriage. Her contention is that it would be a burden on the state’s taxpayers to keep bringing these issues to court. Nadine Smith, CEO of Equality Florida says that this is nothing more than a delay tactic on Bondi’s part.. “Apparently Florida’s attorney general has run out of arguments in her attempt to defend the indefensible,” Smith said. “This is a clear attempt to delay resolution on an issue the majority of Floridians support.” If Bondi is successful in booting the cases out of Florida,”there is no certainty when or even if the Supreme Court will take a marriage case,” Smith said. “While Bondi delays, thousands of Florida families are denied the security and protections that come with the freedom to marry.” “We agree on one thing,” Smith says. “Bondi should stop wasting taxpayer dollars. We call on her to take the position of nine other attorneys general who have chosen not to defend an unjust law. Either end the appeals or urge the Florida Supreme Court to take the matter up right away.”

know you want to know the true skinny behind the latest Pam Bondi trip-and-fall. (See Cover Story.) The Florida Attorney General has been all over the news, of course, insisting as she has that the Federal Court of Appeals review the rulings by federal judges in Monroe County, Miami-Dade County, and Broward County—all of whom determined that denying the LGBT community the right to legally wed is unconstitutional. Pam’s knee-jerk reaction was to pull out the 2008 referendum that found that 62% of those who voted at the time were in favor of making same-sex marriage illegal. Pam felt a responsibility to the people of Florida to defend this law, despite the fact that three separate judges declared it unconstitutional. Okay, so we almost got the fact that you were defending the law as a matter of procedure. You owed it to the citizens of Florida regardless of the cost. Ah, yes, the cost. That little problem has been bandied around by the press—both conservative and liberal—as a colossal waste of cash. You apparently only got the memo last week, Pam, for only then did you do a screeching 180, and decide that those federal courts in Florida that are responsible to handle your appeals weren’t really adequate for the job. Yikes. The way things looked from your filing with the 3rd District Court (which covers Monroe and MiamiDade Counties), it sounds like you just burped your politics and we all heard it. Allow me to quote: “Despite the vigorous policy and legal debates surrounding samesex marriage, there is little disagreement about this: If the United States Supreme Court holds that states must

sanction same-sex marriage, then Florida’s contrary laws must fall,’’ Bondi’s motions argued. “And if the United States Supreme Court holds that states may choose, then plaintiffs’ contrary legal claims must fall, and it would be up to Florida’s voters to effect any change. Either way, this appeal would be over, and it would end without consuming any further taxpayer resources and without burdening Florida’s judiciary.” Pardon us while we gag. “..without consuming any further taxpayer resources.” Hmm…guess you did get the memo, or at least that part of it. In case you’ve missed it, your boss Governor Rick Scott isn’t looking so hot these days, and much of that sweat under his collar is due to you, dear lady. You’ve been spending cash the state does not have, and now that your boss has said to cut the crap, you suddenly discover that all these appeals you’ve been filing may not have been such a great idea. Obviously from a public relations perspective, it’s an unmitigated disaster. From a litigation standpoint, it’s a nightmare. Now that you’ve started this train rolling, you can’t just walk

away and pretend, convenient as it may be, that none of this happened. You may be a long way away in Tallahassee, but we’ve been watching every ignorant step you take. Now that you’ve filed to appeal the decision of the federal court, there is no turning off that spigot. No saying, “oh never mind” to the 3rd District Court that you are now managing to trivialize. While it is true that eventually the Supreme Court of the U.S. will consider this case, exactly when will that be, Pam? Pardon me but, as a bisexual man, who would love to marry my partner, I don’t want to wait. You want to cancel out the appeal process, then you better be prepared to start issuing marriage licenses because that is the only thing that is going to satisfy this angry mob who is out for blood. By questioning the rights of some citizens of this country, you question the rights of all citizens. We all live, breathe, and eat the same foods, nibble ears and kiss lips, and—at the end of the day—only ask for a chance at the same happiness you’ve enjoyed and screwed up through two divorces. Nothing more; nothing less….Until next week….

JUST HOW STUPID DOES PAM BONDI THINK WE ARE?
August 13, 2014

T
his past week, Pam Bondi, the current attorney general of the state of Florida, managed to make herself look like a complete fool, throw more subterfuge into the on-going same-sex marriage debate, and attempt to backpedal on a policy which she has been jamming down the throats of every Floridian for months—all within the same multi-page filing before the 3rd District Court of Appeals. You remember Pam Bondi, the very same attorney general who upset so many law-abiding and frugal Floridians several months back when the first court case went against the state of Florida’s ban on same-sex marriage. While many other states’ attorneys general decided that fighting such an uphill and futile battle was not worth either the time or the money, Bondi reported that it was her duty to defend the voters’ decision in 2008 to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman. No content with merely fighting the same-sex marriage ruling on its own merits, Bondi is the woman who added: “Florida’s marriage laws … have a close, direct and rational relationship to society’s legitimate interest in increasing the likelihood that children will be born to and raised by the mothers and fathers who produced them in stable and enduring family units.” Before we point out that all the defendants that have brought a case against the state of Florida has been in years-old stable relationships, many have adopted or surrogate children, and all put Bondi’s childless, two-divorce record to shame, it bears repeating what else Bondi said in her initial filing: …disrupting Florida’s existing marriage laws would impose significant public harm.” When critics accused her of wasting tax payers money with no regard for our tight budgetary regulations, she said it was her “responsibility” and she really no choice but to pursue the litigation, filing an immediate appeal in the case decided in Monroe county. She later did the same in a case that went against the state in Miami-Dade county and just last week in Broward County. She appealed them all—staying any issuance of marriage licenses, while the court system played out to its all-but-predictable conclusion. Then, last week, the light bulb went on in Pam Bondi’s mind. She finally got the message that with
each appeal coasting an estimated $250,000—and with her appeals beginning to stack up with more, many more, on the way, that perhaps the taxpayers who elected here in 2010, and are slated to vote on her reelection come this November, may not be liking her free-spending ways. So, rather than admit any errors of judgment or lunacy in office, Bondi announced in a filing before the 3rd Circuit court that “Neither this Court nor the Florida Supreme Court can decide this federal issue with finality,” Bondi wrote in her filing. “The United States Supreme Court, however, has the final word on the United States Constitution.” Dah, ya think? Now Bondi wants to skip the entire due process of law in her state—a due process that only last week was her “responsibility” to enforce, to skip all the steps and legal appearances that such appeals require, and toss it up to the U.S Supreme Court who may or may not decide to even accept the case. Really? Did someone finally explain to our attorney general that all these senseless appeals were costing more money then the state has appropriated, or did someone finally break through that bubble to alert her that her chances
of getting reelected based on this unpopular behavior are drying up like shriveled grapes in an abandoned vineyard. You can’t have it both ways, Pam Bondi. Either you are charged with following state law or you are not. Or perhaps you just think that you are now above the law and can just hocuspocus us into believing whatever you say. Just how stupid do you think we are?

TWO HOUR VACATIONS
T
he cheapest time to vacation in South Florida is from right now to the beginning of November. Hotel rates are dirt-cheap and most attractions, except theme parks, have few visitors, making this a great time for a quick getaway. The following areas are all within a two-hour drive, making them perfect for a long day trip or a cheap weekend escape. Miami offers two distinct opportunities for fun. Stay in Miami proper, or head to South Beach, often referred to as the “Gay Riviera.” No matter which option you choose, it’s less than an hour’s drive away. If you prefer not to drive or deal with parking, take the Tri-Rail. If you’re looking for a more urban escape, stay in Miami proper. Stay in downtown and get around easily and for free by jumping on the MetroMover, or check out Little Havana on SW 8th Street for some authentic Cuban food. You can also opt for Coconut Grove, the home to many of GLBT Miami’s community. During your visit make certain to check out the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. Stay at the Mayfair Hotel (3000 Florida Ave, Miami) for upscale amenities and spend the day in one of the rooftop poolside cabanas with spectacular ocean views. Wherever you stay, a visit to the Wynwood arts district is a must. Either drive or taxi as it is surrounded by some sketchy areas.
If you prefer to snooze away the afternoon on the beach, then dance the night away at one of the clubs, head for Miami Beach.
If you prefer to snooze away the afternoon on the beach, then dance the night away at one of the clubs, head for Miami Beach. By taking the Tri-Rail, you can hop on a shuttle to Miami Beach, where you won’t need a car, as all the attractions are within walking distance. Hotel Gaythering (1409 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach) is a gay owned and operated boutique style hotel. It’s convenient to everything and features a lounge, coffee shop and do-it-yourself spa (sorry ladies, the spa is men only). The Hotel Nash (1120 Collins Ave, Miami Beach), formerly Lords South Beach, was renovated a few years ago. Located in the heart of the Art Deco district, the guest rooms pay homage to femme fatales on stage and screen. Z Ocean (1437 Collins Ave, Miami Beach) offers a vast array of spa services should you want to pamper yourself. Book a pool lanai suite, which opens directly onto the hotel’s glass-bottom pool and oversized hot tub. The Dream (1111 Collins Ave, Miami Beach) located next to Versace mansion, features Art Deco designs with a Moroccan influence. The rooftop pool and lounge offers spectacular views of the Miami skyline. Miami’s gay beach on 12th Street is marked with rainbow flags, making it easy to find. For an all-over tan, check out Haulover Beach. It’s quite a way from South Beach, but the Route 120 Beach MAX bus will take you right there. Take a break from the sun and shop along Washington or on Lincoln Road. Books and Books (927 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach) is a great place to pick up a beach read and the café’s a reasonably priced dining option. For breathtaking sunsets and white sand beaches, drive a little more than an hour and a half ’s west to the gulf coast. Naples is a sweet little town with incredible shopping, golf courses and great beaches. The stretch from Seagate Drive to Gordon is where you’ll find the best spots. While not overwhelmingly gay, it is a gay friendly destination. For your stay, the Gulfcoast Inn (2555 Tamiami Trail N, Naples) isn’t luxurious, but it does offer an incredible two-
night package which includes the room, dinner for two people, a free cocktail and continental breakfast each morning. The newly renovated Inn at Pelican Bay has a wonderful pool and, while a mile from the gulf, offers free shuttle service to and from the beaches. For a luxe trip check out the Inn on Fifth (699 5th Ave S, Naples), actually two iconic structures facing each other across Fifth Avenue South. It’s in the heart of downtown Naples, close to entertainment, shopping and the dining district, while the beach is just a short stroll away. With 119 rooms and suites, it is intimate, yet rich in amenities. You’ll love the rooftop oasis pool, spa, two restaurants and a 24-hour fitness center. Club level suites come with a personal concierge, secluded rooftop retreat and daily snacks. For dining and drinking, Mangrove Café (878 5th Ave S, Naples) puts an international spin on its cuisine and Chops City Grill (837 5th Avenue S, Naples) is a favorite steak house. While the nightlife isn’t particularly wild, Bambusa Bar & Grill (600 Goodlette Rd N, Naples) is a casual spot to grab a few drinks before or after dinner, or stay and enjoy the drag shows and “Bitchy Bingo.” The Real Macaw (3275 Bayshore Dr, Naples) offers live music on weekends. Key Largo is the northernmost of the chain of keys that terminate in Key West. While not as raucous as Key West, it still feels a world away – and it’s only an hour and a half from Fort Lauderdale. Key Largo has two state parks, a national park, a national marine sanctuary, and boasts some of the most fascinating botanical scenery in the state. The clear water and the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and National Marine Sanctuary (10261 Overseas Hwy, Key Largo) make Key Largo a top diving destination. Even if it’s your first time snorkeling, the beautiful tropical waters and spectacular under the sea world make you want to return. If being in the water isn’t your thing, feel free to relax along the water’s edge or at a hotel pool. Art collectors (and fans) will appreciate the work at a number of local

The freestyle snorkel program provides a chance to interact with the dolphins in a natural setting, and for those who are less accomplished swim-

Unlike many other places, the dolphins do not leap out of the water and perform any trained behaviors; they interact naturally, as if you came upon them in open water. t’s no secret that people are larger today than ever before. Waistlines have expanded over the last forty years and studies show that portion sizes have grown as well. Researchers from New York University found that average portion sizes started to grow in the 1970s, rising quickly in the 1980s — and this phenomenon hasn’t shown signs of slowing. A “large” order of fries from McDonalds’ weighs the same as 1998’s “Supersize” fries. And it doesn’t stop there. Check out these eye-opening figures, provided by the National Institutes of Health: • Today’s 6-inch bagel has 350 calories. This is 210 more calories than a 3-inch bagel 20 years ago. • Today’s 5 ounce muffin has 500 calories. This is 310 calories more than muffin 20 years ago.

• Today, a large cookie has about 275 calories. This is 220 more calories more than a cookie 20 years ago. • Today, a 3 cup chicken Caesar salad has 790 calories. This is 400 more calories more than Caesar salads 20 years ago. Keep in mind that the health experts all agree on one thing: Obesity is on the rise because people eat too many calories and do not exercise enough. Portion control is a very important factor for losing weight, but to attain a slim and healthy physique exercise is also a must. Now that you know portion sizes today are far larger than you really need, what are you going to do the next time you go out to eat? Try the following three tips and watch as your waist begins to slim and your confidence soars.
TRIM-DOWN TIP #1: RE-PROGRAM YOUR MIND
TRIM-DOWN TIP #3: GO HALFSIES
I know that this is a tough one — so bear with me. These days we are in such a hurry, we rush to work, rush to lunch, rush through errands and then rush home. So it is no wonder that food consumption is no exception. Most meals are devoured before your stomach has the chance to let you know that it is full. Eat your next meal slower than usual. Chew each bite thoroughly, engage in conversation and pay attention for signs that you may be getting full. Once you realize that you are full, stop eating. Congratulations — you just tailored your portion down to its proper size.
I understand that it may be very difficult for you to leave food on your plate, even though your mother isn’t looking over your shoulder, and even if you eat slowly. No problem—you just need to do some strategic planning. The next time you go out to eat, do one of the following two options. 1) Share an entrée with a friend and order salad or soup to start your meal. This will cut your calories down dramatically, while still giving you the satisfaction of clearing your plate. 2) If sharing isn’t an option, ask your waiter to bring a to-go box along with your order. As soon as the food is placed in front of you, put half of it into the to-go box. You are now left with a reasonable portion and even have your next meal taken care of.

I’m sure your mother did a great job when she taught you to “clean your plate.” The problem now lies in the fact that your plate is usually loaded with more than 3 times the calories than you really need. So what’s the solution? Realize that it is okay to leave food on your plate. Eating everything on the plate is probably a habit now, but it is one that you can break. Focus on how you feel halfway through your meal. Are you full? If you are beginning to feel full, then stop eating. Don’t worry — your mom won’t send you to your room!

Less St. Petersburg This one-woman show details the difficulties in being a homeless woman. Many women on the streets come from abusive pasts, broken homes, and other devastatingly traumatic events that leave them powerless to control the downward spirals of their lives. “Less” depicts the harsh realities of a life where there are only three choices: panhandling, stealing, or prostitution. The show attempts to depict just how thin the line is between being “normal” and being homeless. The evening will also tie in the theme of homelessness with a gallery of paintings by Ben Love, a previously homeless artist, and music from The Open Door Band, comprised of homeless and previously homeless musicians. 7 p.m. The Studio@620. 620 First Ave. S. For a time country music singers who supported LGBT issues were few and far between. Those times may be changing, but trailblazer Brad Paisley came out in favor of gay marriage way before it was considered faux pas not to. Not only is Paisley a class act ally, but he’s also one of the most popular country music singers working today. He has won three Grammy Awards, fourteen Academy of Country Music Awards, fourteen Country Music Association Awards, two American Music Awards, and, most importantly, has earned the greatest honor bestowed upon a country music singer, becoming a member of the Grand Ole Opry. 7 p.m. Cruzan Amphitheatre. 601-7 Sansburys Way. by a local innkeeper that was such a culinary delight that he ordered the townspeople to gather all the eggs in the village and to prepare a huge omelette for his army the next day. You should always use a nonstick frying pan for best results. Use 2 to 3 eggs per person.
29
Don’t stir! Let the eggs cook for up to a minute or until the bottom starts to set. 5. With a heat-resistant rubber spatula, gently push one edge of the egg into the center of the pan, while tilting the pan to allow the still liquid egg to flow in underneath. Repeat with the other edges, until there’s no liquid left. 6. Y our eggs should now be a bright yellow pancake, which should easily slide around on the nonstick surface. If it sticks at all, loosen it with your spatula. 7. If you’re adding any other ingredients, now’s the time to do it. Spoon your filling over one side of the omelette. Now gently flip the egg pancake half over, using your spatula. Cook for another few seconds, or until there is no uncooked egg left. I like mine a little runny in the middle, so, as I always say “you are the chef.” There’s no limit to the number of fillings you can use with this basic omelette recipe.

1. C rack the eggs into a mixing bowl and beat them until they turn a pale yellow color. 2. Heat a heavy-bottomed nonstick sauté pan over medium-low heat. Add the butter and let it melt. 3. Add the milk to the eggs and season to taste with salt and white pepper. Then, grab your whisk and whisk like mad. You’re going to work up a sweat here!! If you’re not up for that, you can use an electric beater. Whatever device you use, you’re trying to beat as much air as possible into the eggs. 4. W hen the butter or oil in the pan is hot enough, pour in the eggs.

he omelette is thought to have originated in the ancient Near-East. Beaten eggs were mixed with chopped herbs, fried until firm, then sliced into wedges. This dish is thought to have travelled to Western Europe via the Middle East and North Africa, with each country adapting the original recipe to produce Italian frittata, Spanish tortilla and the French omelette. As the story goes, when Napoleon and his army were traveling through Southern France, they decided to rest for the night near the town of Bessières. Napoleon feasted on an omelette prepared

“The Hundred-Foot Journey”
H
Michelin star. Even at its most predictable, “The Hundred-Foot Journey” is filling and nourishing. It’s the kind of pleasing movie that can satisfy just about any craving. Like Gillian Robespierre’s “Obvious Child,” “What If” (CBS Films/ eOne) is a funny and touching romcom for millennials. Based on a play by T. J. Dawe, the Toronto-set “What If” is bracketed by parties. At the first party, awkward but adorable med school dropout-turned-manual writer Wallace (Daniel Radcliffe) meets animated animator Chantry (Zoe Kazan), the cousin of host Allan (Adam Driver). Wallace, recovering from a bad break-up, lives in his sister Ellie’s (Jemima Rooper) attic and can often be found stargazing on the roof. A somewhat more stable Chantry lives with Ben (Rafe Spall), her UN lawyer boyfriend of five years. A farewell party for Chantry, who has accepted a workrelated transfer to Taiwan, and a wedding (not telling whose) make up the closing party bracket.
In between, we observe as Wallace and Chantry make an effort to become friends without putting unnecessary sexual strain on their relationship. Allan and new girlfriend/fiancé/bride Nicole (Mackenzie Davis) are of little or no help (see the campfire/beach scene) to the mixed gender pals. Chantry’s younger sister Dalia (Megan Park) almost means well, but alas she too comes up short when it comes to advising Chantry in matters of the heart and the head. But what fun it is to watch the two of them go through changes as they face the challenges. “What If” is a little heavy on the physical and gross-out comedy. Ben falls out of a window; Wallace goes down a flight of stairs. There’s a lot of bodily function talk, a choking/Heimlich scene and a whole bit involving a Fool’s Gold Loaf (go ahead, Google it) and Elvis Presley. Nevertheless, “What If” is refreshing, kooky and sexy. Radcliffe hold his own as a leading man and isn’t afraid of a bare butt shot. Kazan is as charming as ever.

van breakdown brake incident allows for Hassan and sous chef Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon) to meet cute (it’s an international rom-com, kids!) before they discover they are going to be competitors. In spite of Hassan’s resistance, Papa went out and bought the abandoned restaurant across the road from the Michelin-starred restaurant run by the stuffy and fussy Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren) where Marguerite is employed. After initially being dismissed as a joke, Mallory realizes that Maison Mumbai could spell trouble for her eating establishment; especially after she gets a taste of Hassan’s cooking (he’s been studying the art of French cooking and adding his own Indian flourishes). There is a buffet of conflict, including Mallory and Papa’s personal war, as well as shocking racially-motivated violence. But the laughs and goo-goo eyes, including those between Mallory and Papa, are as plentiful as a feast. Hassan passes Mallory’s omelet test and is hired away to help her earn her second

ere’s a bit of advice before you go see the new Lasse Hallström movie “The Hundred-Foot Journey” (Touchstone/ DreamWorks). Don’t see it on an empty stomach. A feast for both the eyes and the belly, “The HundredFoot Journey” is the feel good/tastes good movie of the season. Co-produced by Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey, based on the novel by Richard C. Morais, “The Hundred-Foot Journey” comes across as a comeback for Hallström who seemed to have lost his footing in recent years. It’s a movie in the tradition of “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” and “Big Night,” featuring clashing adults, competing dining destinations and chaos, as well as inevitable romance. Hassan (the gorgeous Manish Dayal), his Papa (Oma Puri), two brothers and two sisters, arrive in a small village in the French countryside after being exiled from Mumbai and spending a year in London (under the Heathrow flight path).
