JUST ADAM The week reflected back through fabulously funny eyes WHERE’S MY CHURCH CHOIR? Lawwwd child this day has put me throooough it... And tomorrow looks to be just as trying. SPANGLISH. I’d say a good 90% of the building where my company’s Miami office is located is Bilingual Spanish/English.... so whenever I am in the elevator and another obvious gringo steps in, there’s an unwritten eye contact/nod bond. THE PINK LADIES. You have to give mad props to Stockard Channing. She was the hottest 40-year-old high school senior ever. And she werrrrked it 70s style. THE FACTS OF LIFE. Lawwd Jesus Kim Fields needs to fix her weave game. She is serving Bride of Frankenstein! BECAUSE I LIKE IT BIG. I still laugh every time I say I have to go to BJ’s. WHITE HAIRED MEN ARE IN. It really pains me to look at Bill Clinton in all these news footage clips… he looks like a Q-tip. FEELING ANNOYED. I’m initiating a new movement... ”Don’t Bring your Damn Kids to Work Day.” CHANNEL SURFING. Well thank God some channel gave another reality show to a Kardashian person, this time the big fat one who needs even more attention with a new “concept” where she hangs out with friends over cocktails with hideous cornrows in her hair. Thanks entertainment industry! FASHION UPDATE. Pearl Jam might be back, but forget about me wearing flannels and Doc Martens again. I’ve donated all them to my closest lesbian friends. AMEN, AMEN. God if there’s one thing I cannot stand it is extreme micromanagement. What a professional turn off. DIETING STRESS. God help me! On a juice cleanse today and they’re giving away free pizza at BJ’s! Jesus take the wheel!

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING...

Random thoughts from social media and beyond this week

BRAD PITT

“TO ME, SAME-SEX MARRIAGE IS LIKE THE NEW NORMAL. I DONʼT GIVE A SH*T. IF TWO GAY PEOPLE WANT TO GET MARRIED IT DOESNʼT BOTHER ME. IF TWO PEOPLE SAY THEY LOVE EACH OTHER AND THEY WANT TO BE TOGETHER, THEY SHOULD BE TOGETHER. DONʼT YOU THINK?”

“I THINK THAT THE BEST DAY WILL BE WHEN WE NO LONGER TALK ABOUT BEING GAY OR STRAIGHT—ITʼS NOT A ʻGAY WEDDING,ʼ ITʼS JUST A ʻWEDDING.ʼ ITʼS NOT A ʻGAY MARRIAGE,ʼ ITʼS JUST ʻA MARRIAGE.ʼ“ PINK

OCTAVIA SPENCER

“THE CALLUS ON MY RIGHT HAND IS LONG-FORMED — AND NOT FROM MASTURBATION. I’M DYING TO MOVE OVER TO THE OTHER HAND. I’D ALSO LIKE TO CALL HIM MY HUSBAND... I’VE BEEN SAYING ‘BETTER HALF’ FOR AS LONG AS I’VE BEEN ABLE TO.” NEIL PATRICK HARRIS

NENE LEAKES

“ITʼS A NO-BRAINER. IF YOUʼRE NOT FOR GAY MARRIAGE, DONʼT MARRY A GAY PERSON.” WHOOPI GOLDBERG

February 04, 2016

“IT IS EACH AMERICAN’S CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO MARRY THE PERSON THEY LOVE, NO MATTER WHAT STATE THEY INHABIT. NO STATE SHOULD DECIDE WHO CAN MARRY AND WHO CANNOT. THANKS TO THE TIRELESS WORK OF SO MANY, SOMEDAY SOON THIS DISCRIMINATION WILL END AND EVERY AMERICAN WILL BE ABLE TO ENJOY THEIR EQUAL RIGHT TO MARRIAGE.”

JIM PARSONS

“I’M PRO-MARRIAGE. IF IT’S GAY, IT’S GAY. THAT’S WHAT THEY HAVE TO START SAYING. IT’S NOT ABOUT GAY MARRIAGE. JUST BE PRO-MARRIAGE.“

“I’M I M 42 NOW AND FOR MUCH OF MY ADULT LIFE THAT WASN’T REALLY A WASN POSSIBILITY. AND II’VE GROWN MORE INTERESTED IN THE IDEA AND II’M CERTAINLY SUPPORTIVE OF THE NOTION. MY OWN PERSONAL INTEREST IN IT HAS NEVER HIGH.” BEEN THAT HIGH.

T he Golden Age of Gay Weddings

I

am probably the most single person you will ever meet. So when I was asked to lead the charge on this special wedding issue, I didn’t expect to fall in love with the process. Ask my office mates who had to deal with the sounds of my sobbing watching the viral proposals on YouTube. Just you wait until you read our six local love stories. The devotion and admiration between these six gay couples would make even the hardest skeptic believe in the power of love. In 2015, I had the special privilege to be the maid of honor at my sister’s wedding. My sister may be straight, but she has been a huge ally for the LGBTQ community even before I came out. She was the co-creator of our high school’s Gay Straight Alliance in the mid-90s, and ever since my coming out has accepted my gayness with love and support. So it was only fitting that the day before her nuptials, same sex marriage became legal. We were sitting around the kitchen table with the rest of her wedding party after a busy morning of getting a barn ready to be a wedding hall. All of a sudden, someone yelped with joy that marriage equality was finally a reality, and we all quickly turned to our phones to read news articles and post about the decision on Facebook.

February 04, 2016

8

Later that night, I sat down to write my maid of honor speech. Because marriage equality was not only an important moment for me, but for everyone in our modern family - I added quotes from Justice Anthony Kennedy’s historic opinion: The nature of marriage is that, through its enduring bond, two persons together can find other freedoms, such as expression, intimacy, and spirituality. This is true for all persons, whatever their sexual orientation. No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were. As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death. Whether you are newly engaged or newly single, may you find inspiration from the words and pages of this special wedding issue. - Contributing Editor, Alexander Kacala

How did you two meet?

floridaagenda.com

LAURA: I met Katy through a mutual friend in a bar (of all places). Katy and I actually were lunch buddies for about a year before we started dating. A group of us would go to a downtown gay bar and shoot pool when the boys went onto the dance floor to line dance. Katy and I still joke about me saying that our first meeting was like a job interview! KATY: We met 21 years ago at a bar downtown called The District. It was primarily a men’s bar, but they had country dancing lessons on Thursday night. It cleared the pool tables, and a group of women would go in and play. Laura was a friend of a friend.

Our Big Day: La ura Coo gler and Katy Yan kie

Describe your big day to our readers.

LAURA: Our wedding day was just that … a Big Day! Everything from getting ready to the actual ceremony, the venue, the food, music, and our joy and happiness as well as that of our families and family of friends made the energy of our evening absolutely amazing. Everyone involved really cared about what they were doing and actually made our day the best day we could have ever asked for. I cannot say enough good things about Jessica King, our wedding planner, for all her hard work – we never had to worry about one thing going wrong. Our photographers, LoFaro Photography, really captured our day beautifully from start to finish. Our pictures are spectacular! Every time I look at these pictures, I want to do all of it over again. Everything was just perfect.

Q A Photographer: LoFaro Photography

Who is more romantic in the relationship and how?

LAURA: I would like to think I am more romantic, but would have to say that Katy is. One Christmas, Katy forgot to buy a Christmas card for me. She went off in the other room and made the best, funniest card I ever got because she made it. We still laugh about this card and I keep it hanging in our home office.

9

KATY: I think we would each say that we are the most romantic! We pay lots of attention to anniversaries, birthdays, holidays, and try to make them special for each other, even after twenty years.

February 04, 2016

KATY: We got our marriage license at the Broward County courthouse on January 6, the first day it was legal, with a few beautiful words from Anne Atwell from Sunshine Cathedral, and bridesmaids Dennis and Tito, also from the church—we were couple number 24! However, we wanted to celebrate with a wedding, so we planned for March 28, 2015 at the Riverside Hotel, with 100 people in attendance. It was so wonderful having our friends and family participate—who gets to have their Dad walk them down the aisle at 54? So many things in life don’t turn out as you hope…our wedding was not one of those things. It was pretty perfect—everyone said that it was the most fun wedding they had ever attended. The Riverside Hotel was such a beautiful venue. We carefully chose the music, the ceremony, and the food, with help from Jessica King, our wedding planner. Our dear friend Rashid and his partner Michael did the flowers, and they were gorgeous! We had a bagpiper conclude the ceremony, which was just wonderful. Dear friends did the readings, and the minister was also an old friend. Having our friend Tiffany Arieagus perform was a dream.

What is your favorite thing about your partner?

GIANCARLO: I’ll let Bernardo answer this one for both of us.

February 04, 2016 11

The level of detail we put in the wedding was incredible. We wrote a note on everybody’s place cards. The linen napkins were monogramed with our logo. We bought all the head shaped vases from Italy. It was very elaborate although it took us only a month and a half to plan. After the speeches, the dinner music became louder. We had a saxophonist playing and dancing on the tables. After that, everybody headed up to the garden mound, a beautiful spot engulfed by huge trees. This is where we had an open air dance floor. Everybody danced to DJ Bea Perina until it was time to head to an after party in the Design District. Only a few could make it but it was a lot of fun (from what I can remember). We had wedding activities all the way to Sunday, since we had a lot of people from out of town.

Photographer: Mary Beth Tyson

BERNARDO: We both got dressed in our apartment with Ray Roman and Mary Beth’s camera crew. When we were finished, a boat came to pick us up in front of our building on Biscayne Bay. Giancarlo, the Captain and I had to make some time to allow all the guests to arrive at Vizcaya so the captain took us to Seaspice to have a couple of drinks. After fifteen minutes, we headed over to Vizcaya. As we were arriving, we could see everybody at a distance waiting for us. They played one of our songs as we arrived closer. Soon after, we got off the boat and walked over to the stairs that lead to the beautiful gardens of Vizcaya where we had our ceremony. My best friend Irma was the officiant. We chose everything she wore. Everybody cried. It was almost impossible for me and Irma to even get our words out. Right after we said yes and kissed, the music started and we all headed to the garden where we had two very long tables underneath the trees. We had only small plates and lots of Rose. The music was one of my favorite things. We chose five people to give speeches and let them know only five minutes before. We wanted everybody to be very genuine.

Special Wedding Issue Q Q A A Tell us your favorite memory from your wedding day.

OSMANY: Lior’s speech. It was so heartwarming - he talked about my dad who had just recently passed. And also to see my mom’s face filled with joy.

LIOR: The speeches. I made a really emotional speech and everyone was crying. I made my speech about how I was his anchor. His father had just passed away a year before and I said during my speech that I would be his anchor - I would continue his father’s legacy. And that I traveled this great distance to find him as my soul mate.

What were you feeling at the exact moment you said, “I do”?

OSMANY: To be honest, I was a little tipsy because of the bubbly. But you cannot put into words the rush of emotions, I still feel the same emotions when I think about it. It’s paralyzing.

Q A

What is your favorite thing about your partner?

OSMANY: His beautiful eyes and his goal driven outlook on life

LIOR: I like that he is sensitive and that he can cry from emotional movies. He has very high LIOR: That my decision to leave emotional intelligence. He is kind everything behind in Israel was to people. He is very communiright. For me, it was complete only cate. He can talk to everyone and because I found my soul mate and anyone. OSMANY: It was a stormy afternoon on February 28th. We both dressed in dark blue. Close to 100 family members and friends were awaiting to see us tight the knot. The ceremony was flawless, the venue was decorated to perfection. I remember walking down the aisle while Arias Marin sang “All of Me” and our best friend and drag queen Athena Dion awaited to officiate the ceremony. We laughed, we cried, we kissed, we broke the glass, we danced and we shared the most beautiful moment of our lives with the ones we love the most. LIOR: We actually had two weddings. We had one that was the official wedding in DC. We did it on very short notice. It was before it was approved to get married in Florida. We then had a big wedding with 100 guests in February with all of our family and friends in Miami. We did it all with only one week notice. We rented the tuxedos, the cake, and DJ, and Athena Dion was our officiant. We didn’t know her back then. It was really emotional.

Who is more romantic in the relationship and how?

floridaagenda.com

LEA: We each can be very romantic to let the other know how special they are. Being romantic does not have to mean spending a lot of money or grand gestures, It is about showing you are thinking about someone and letting them know they are special. While every girl loves roses on Valentine’s Day, I love to send April flowers “just because” and when it’s not a Hallmark holiday. I have done small romantic things for April like coming to her office with a cup of coffee or a box of Band-Aids (inside joke). APRIL: Lea is more romantic. She thinks about the little things…sends me flowers just because, celebrates our anniversary in weeks and months.

Q A

Lea Krauss and April Halle

Describe your big day to our readers.

LEA: The “Big Day” went by so quickly, but I remember telling myself to be present and to enjoy every moment. So I did! I enjoyed all of it – from getting ready; signing the Ketubah; the ceremony under the Chuppah; our first dance to “She Keeps Me Warm”; dancing with my father; watching April dance with her father; our siblings blessing the challah; cutting the cake; to being surrounded by close friends and family. The day was magical. Our wedding was perfect, not because it went off “without a hitch,” but because I was so excited to start my life as Mrs. Krauss with April by my side. Neither one of us was a “bridezilla” because we knew the most important part of the wedding day was our commitment to one another. All the other stuff was just not as important as our love.

Q A

How did you two meet?

APRIL: We met at networking luncheon. You know, everyone goes around and does a 30 second spiel about himself or herself. We weren’t at the same table but after she spoke I was blown away and thought to myself “what a dynamite woman.” I went up to talk to her and we became friends. We were friends for about 4 years before we started dating.

13

Photographer: Courtney Studios

LEA: We met at a networking luncheon for lawyers who are in small law firms.

February 04, 2016

APRIL: How we got engaged made our wedding day that much more special and unique. The Windsor decision was pending and all of us were optimistic. The local LGBT vendors and allies put together an auction item for a wedding package for the Gay and Lesbian Lawyer’s Network Gala in April 2015. The package included a Sunday brunch wedding at the Riverside Hotel, suite, flowers, wedding cake, DJ, invitations, hair and makeup, massages, wedding planner, DJ, photographer, videographer, etc. As the bidding started, I became overwhelmed by my love for Lea (she was hosting the event as the GLLN President and had given a speech about transgender youths who were there with their parents supporting them). I threw up my hand and yelled out a bid and won. I walked up to Lea and got down on one knee and proposed to her in front of the 200 guests, including her parents, after asking her father for her hand in marriage. Our Rabbi officiated as we exchanged vows under the Chuppah with our family and friends bearing witness to our love.

JOHN: We met on a popular dating app after I thought I saw him walking his dog. Come to find out he was walking a dog on that street that day, but it wasn’t him! I still got the date though ... the first night we actually were going to meet up, Tony left his wallet on the plane and it took off. Long story short: He couldn’t get out of the parking garage without some sort of payment. He made it up to me by taking me for sushi on our actual first date (same place he proposed, Shari Sushi)

Photographer: Blake Simpson of Lyrical Photography.

TONY: JD (John Derek) and I first met online. He thought he saw me walking my dog downtown, but really, it wasn’t me. We went to one of our now favorite sushi restaurants, Shari downtown for our first date. I remember being impressed that he ordered my same drink of choice (slightly dirty martini). We had a great conversation at dinner and carried on our date for a walk around Lake Eola.

JOHN: After we said, “I do” and turned around just seeing all of our newly blended family and friends. It was overwhelming. TONY: My favorite memory of my wedding day was right before we had dinner after the cocktail hour and were announced into the reception. It’s a very magical feeling to stand in front of all the people you love the most and know they are there to support you and your partner. I’ve never felt so loved and special. Our best friends and grooms gals of honor made the most beautiful speeches and I followed with a speech thanking everyone for being there to support us. I am not an emotional person, and usually don’t cry, but that was the happiest feeling to really see everyone in that moment and knowing they were there just for us.

A

JOHN: We wanted the wedding to be as carefree as Sunday brunch from the jump so we made sure there was enough champagne to go around! As we all got ready in the wedding suite, I loved seeing all our girlfriends all laughing and having a genuine good time. There wasn’t an ounce of stress which really set the tone for the rest of the evening. After hair and makeup, we began the photos with our photographer, and took some shots around the hotel with downtown Orlando as our back-drop. The wedding was held on Lake Eola Park which was lit by all the Christmas lights! The ceremony was short and sweet and we couldn’t have asked for better weather. Since there was no bride, in lieu of flowers, our “flower girl” carried whimsical balloons. Our sisters walked us down the aisle which everyone loved as well. We exchanged letters to one another, said our vows, had an intention setting, then we were pronounced husband and husband. After the ceremony, our guests admired the lights as they walked around Lake Eola to the reception which was held at 310 Lakeside.

TONY: Our wedding ceremony took place on 12/12/15 at Lake Eola Park. I also proposed on this lake, so it was a very special place for both of us. We planned our wedding to begin at 5:00 so the sun would be setting in the background. We also planned it this way so the lights around Lake Eola and the fountain would be lit up as the ceremony ended. After the ceremony, our guests and wedding party walked around the lake to the reception at 310 Lakeside. We had a private patio outside of the reception for cocktail hour. JD and I made it mandatory we didn’t take too many pictures after the ceremony to hang out with our guest. After the cocktail hour we made our way into the reception area of 310. We wanted our wedding to be more like a family dinner all together. We made sure there was no dancing in the beginning so the guests would enjoy the full service and feel of a dinner together. After dinner and dancing, we continued the night by going out downtown. We originally planned for a bar crawl, but only made it to our favorite club, Stardust.

NICK: At a club in Chicago called Paradise, 33 years ago. It was Thursday night - $5 cover 25¢ drinks. Mark had his friend introduce us and within two months, October 1st, we moved in together. MARK: We met in August of 1982 in a gay bar in Chicago called Paradise. We danced until the bar closed. Nick invited me back to his nearby apartment and we slept together that night. I wasn’t going to let him go – I knew I was in love with him!

Tell us your favorite memory from your wedding day.

NICK: Maybe not quite favorite, but most memorable was arriving at the Broward County Courthouse and having to take a number to be served. The number was “69”.

Q A

What were you feeling at the exact moment you said, “I do”?

NICK: “After 33 years, is this really happening?”

MARK: Wow – I can’t believe we’re actually doing this after living together for 33 years!

MARK: As mentioned, being together for 33 years, we wanted this day to be a typical day (another day in Paradise together). I think the best part of the day was the fact that it was our special day and we spent it with close family and friends.

NICK: This may sound unromantic, but it went just as we had planned it. It was just another day in sunny Fort Lauderdale (Paradise). We spent the morning working and at noon, we closed the office to get ready to sneak away to the Broward County Courthouse to tie the knot. We were joined by Mark’s sister and niece as well as two of our dear friends who arrived with a large box which we weren’t supposed to know was a cake, but was quite the surprise. Mark’s sister had arranged for a limo to get us to the courthouse. We were whisked away to BCC to do the do. We arrived and took a number, waited a bit and entered the Chapel. The ceremony was brief and now a bit of a blur. I recall that there were rings, “I dos,” kisses and photographs. Why do people always smile bigger than usual at weddings? We all returned to our home and celebrated. We cut the cake, drank champagne and opened lovely gifts. Later that evening, we went to a monthly Mega Member Mixer at the Tower Club, where we are members. There were about 300 friends, business associates and other members in attendance. We like to fondly refer to this as “Our Wedding Reception.” MARK: We celebrated our 33rd anniversary on October 1 when we got married. We wanted it simple and just like any other day. With this in mind, my sister flew in from Chicago, my niece drove up from South Beach and our best friends surprised us with a huge wedding cake and champagne. My sister did surprise us with a big stretch limo to take us six blocks from our house in Victoria Park to the Broward County courthouse. We were very impressed with the County’s wedding service.

Special Wedding Issue

GETTING A LICENSE: THE FINE PRINT

T

he sunny climes and white sand beaches have been tempting lovers for a century. While traditionally a popular same-sex honeymoon destination, Florida has now soared to the forefront of areas to consider when planning a same-sex wedding itself. In addition to a wide range of potential venue sites, the state offers a variety of transportation alternatives, deejays, tropical flowers, event planners, beach locations, and gay-friendly bakeries to make your nuptials truly memorable. Fortunately, your first step—obtaining your marriage license—is the easiest. The state of Florida has seen to that. There are eight simply steps to follow that guarantee to take all the guess work out of the process..

February 04, 2016

18

1. LOCATE YOUR LOCAL COUNTY COURTHOUSE. The key word here is county. In Florida, we have a Supreme Court, District Courts of Appeal, and trial courts as well. None of those will be a help in obtaining your marriage license, however, which is the sole domain of local counties of which we’ve got 67 in our state. If you’re visiting Florida and don’t know the county in which you’re located, visit floridabar.org/DIVCOM/PI/ DirEntries.nsf/WCities?OpenView to find that information. Appointments are not necessary at any County Clerk office in Florida. 2. GATHER NECESSARY DOCUMENTS. You will need a state driver’s license or passport, and an original birth certificate or Social Security number. 3. PAY A FEE. Currently it costs $93.50 to get a marriage license in Florida. For Florida residents, the cost is reduced to $61.00 if you have

completed a pre-marriage counseling session. The license fee is payable in cash, via credit card or by check, so come prepared. 4. WAIT AT LEAST THREE DAYS. In Florida, there is a three-day waiting period between the time the license is issued and the marriage may take place. Your license remains valid for 60 days from the date of issue.

not only ceremony venues and marriage officiants and ministers, but also caterers, florists, bartenders, transportation, entertainment, deejays, formal wear suppliers, bakeries, and makeup artists. Marriage licenses issued in one county in Florida are good for ceremonies in all counties in Florida.

5. PREPARE YOUR VOWS. Regardless of what kind of wedding you have planned, from simple courthouse nuptials to elaborate formal events, you’ll want to personalize your own wedding vows.

7. HAVE YOUR MARRIAGE LICENSE SIGNED, DATED, AND FILED WITH THE COURT WITHIN SEVEN DAYS OF THE WEDDING. This service is typically provided by the officiant, but not always. If not, return to the Clerk of the Court and submit the document yourself.

Special Wedding Issue AGENDA INTERVIEW

DAVID TUTERA: CELEBRITY WEDDING PLANNER

I

BY ALEXANDER KACALA

f there is one thing David Tutera knows, it’s how to throw a wedding. The celebrity wedding planner, bridal fashion designer, host of WE tv’s David Tutera’s CELEBrations and author has built a multi-million dollar brand all on bridal. And his growing empire isn’t stopping anytime soon. Tutera’s grandfather, a successful florist, first noticed his grandson’s artistic ability at an early age and encouraged him to pursue his passion. At age 19, with the advice of his grandfather and only one client, Tutera opened his events planning business. Thirty years later, Tutera is getting ready to launch the second installment of “Your Wedding Experience,” a string of larger than life events touring the country. Coming to Fort Lauderdale in May, the event promises to offer endless inspiration, reputable industry experts, and the best possible resources under one roof. We had the opportunity to catch up with the man behind the bride on the favorite wedding he helped plan, his advice to same sex couples, and what people can expect from his event this upcoming May.

ALEXANDER KACALA: What is the hardest obstacle to overcome when working with a couple prior to their wedding? DAVID TUTERA: I think a couple needs to be open minded, trusting, and willing to give up control to his or her wedding planner. Without these things, the planner will not be able to help to the best of his or her abilities and execute their overall vision. The couple needs to have a clear idea of the type of style that they want their wedding to be, and what elements of the day are most important to them. Once these details are set, it is important to trust the planner in his or her expertise. KACALA: Tell us about one of your favorite weddings you helped plan and what made it so special for you?

TUTERA: I had the honor of planning a wedding for a young couple through the Make-AWish foundation. The bride was terminally ill, but her young groom stayed by her side through it all. Witnessing their love and devotion to each other was so inspiring, and having the opportunity to be a part of their big day was such a once in a lifetime feeling. I will never forget that experience. KACALA: The episode where you plan your assistant Montré Burton’s wedding recently aired. What was the most exciting moment from that experience? TUTERA: From the moment that Montré asked me to plan his wedding, I knew that the whole experience would be fantastic. But, I was taken back when Montré asked if I would be his “Man

of Honor.” That was the first time anyone had ever asked me to take on that important role and I was so honored. KACALA: What is some unique advice you can give to our readers, same sex couples who may be going into the wedding planning process? TUTERA: When planning a traditional wedding, it’s usually about checking off the expected “todos.” However, same sex couples shouldn’t have to worry about doing what’s “expected,” and should take advantage of having the freedom to plan their wedding however they would like: conventional, unconventional or mixed! Throw an event exactly the way you want to, and don’t worry about staying in the lines of conformity.

TUTERA: We are always looking for new vendors to come join us at “Your Wedding Experience”! Information on becoming a “David Tutera Approved” vendor can be found on the “Exhibit With Us” page at www.yourweddingexperience. com. Tickets can also be purchased through our website for couples.

personally be involved in helping couples plan their wedding. Not everyone is able to hire me as their planner, so I’m always looking for the next best thing and that was definitely a big part of what inspired me to create “Your Wedding Experience presented by David Tutera.” This isn’t something I am just putting together, but I am actually hosting it as well, allowing me to join couples as they touch, feel and experience all of the trend forward ideas and inspirations that I have personally come up with alongside their city’s local vendors to help get their wedding planning off to a great start!

First comes love; then comes marriage; next comes the baby carriage

M

ichael Bobbitt and husband Craig Hanna are parents of an adopted son from Vietnam. Bobbitt, a former professional dancer, is Producing Artistic Director of Maryland-based Adventure Theatre/MTC, a local children’s theatre and training academy. As such, he has a keen eye for drama. (Full disclosure: my 15-year old daughter, also adopted from Vietnam, is one of his students.) After a recent — and lately rather more frequent than he would like — trip with his now teenage son to the emergency room, Bobbitt posted the following exchange on Facebook: “Explaining my relationship to my adopted Asian son at the emergency room has been like a ‘who’s on first’ vaudeville routine. Me: I’m his dad. He’s got BY two dads. LINDA Attendant: PENTZ Where is his mother? Me: No mother. Two dads. Attendant: You are step dad or biological dad? Me: I’m black, he’s Asian. He was adopted. Attendant: So where is mother? Me:...(jazz hands)” Was this homophobia? “I honestly don’t think her response came from prejudice,” Bobbitt said. “I think she just couldn’t quite grasp it.” Mild puzzlement is generally about as bad as it gets for gay dads in the Greater Washington, DC area, a cosseted environment that is decidedly more socially progressive than many other parts of the country. However, the curiosity and questions that dog gay dads when they are out in public with their children means, as adoptive father Tony Bonetti put it, “It’s like you constantly have to come out.” And remain ever vigilant. Bills are constantly on the move, even in progressive states like Maryland, that aim to revoke LGBT adoption rights. Adoption laws vary from state to state and two — Mississippi and

Utah — forbid LGBT families from adopting altogether. A burgeoning effort to promote the so-called religious exemption clause to justify discrimination against LGBT adopting parents is another threat and would allow private adoption agencies to turn prospective LGBT parents away. Despite the pushback, the route to parenthood for gay men still offers plenty of options, and plenty of challenges as well. In his new book, Journey To Same-Sex Parenthood, Eric Rosswood offers anecdotes and advice on the various pathways that include open adoption; fostering and adopting from foster care; surrogacy; assisted reproduction; and co-parenting. The book serves as a useful guide and resource but the personal stories also allay commonly-held fears about adopting “someone else’s child.” The passionately instant bond is described eloquently over and over in Rosswood’s book, perhaps most profoundly by Rob Watson, who adopted a baby at birth born to two heroin addicts. “The nurse brought my new son over in a blanket and I held him softly on my chest. I looked into his eyes and we connected. He was home; I was home. This was right. Deep in my heart, I knew this child was my son forever.” Bonetti and his husband Matt adopted in Connecticut, another progressive state that allowed even unmarried couples to adopt. Nevertheless, the pair had what he described as a “shotgun civil union” just days after the April birth of their adopted daughter “so we could pursue the adoption jointly.” The process was expedited by their choice to adopt Bonetti’s cousin’s baby, and the wait for final paperwork, though tense, was fast. “In October we were granted parental rights and our names both went straight onto the birth certificate,” he said. The couple subsequently moved to Maryland, deliberately chosen because of its politically and socially progressive environment. Andrew Gordon and his husband Mike decided against adoption and chose surrogacy with one of them as the biological father, putting them on a protracted, expensive, and sometimes nerve-racking path to the birth

having two gay dads would make him gay. “Some kids tease him but his response is ‘I get to do dad things twice,’” said Bobbitt, who is relieved that, “It has not caused him the trauma I thought it was going to.” Bonetti and Gordon are acutely aware of the privileged environment we all enjoy in the region. Gordon found his daughter’s pre-school was highly sensitive to mixed families. “They don’t have ‘mommy and me’ they have ‘muffins and me,’” he said. “And on Father’s day, they let her make two of everything instead of one.” But Bonetti thinks that even the progressive Montgomery County schools could do more. “At all the schools Audrey’s been to, there’s never been an assembly on family diversity and I’m beginning to feel compelled to make something like that happen,” he said. Hostility toward gay parents is founded in ignorance and unsupported by the facts. As the Human Rights Campaign states: “the literature on outcomes for children of same-sex parents is marked by scientific consensus that they experience ‘no differences’ compared to children from other parental configurations.” Bobbitt feels so surrounded by diversity that he says he sometimes forgets that he is gay and black and that his son is Asian and adopted. “Seeing many more kids in everyday life who have families like mine is pretty remarkable,” he said of the societal changes he has observed since adopting his son 14 years ago. “It used to be you had to join a group or a list but now you see them everywhere.” As Duke Nelson writes in Rosswood’s book, dads should just be allowed to be dads. “I guess this is the reason I want to share our story, to help others who want the same and don’t see their reflection in their own families or community. I want them to learn from our mistakes, to exist and be visible, so we can all just be dads and not ‘gay’ dads.”

of their daughter. “I learned more about surrogacy than I ever want to know,” said Gordon, a lawyer. Gordon said they first considered foster care adoption but got “a stack of papers that was more than my security clearance to become a prosecutor.” International adoptions for same sex parents “were drying up really fast.” Third party adoption — “produce your slick brochure and sell yourself to a birth mom” — did not appeal. One odd quirk, Gordon said, was that as a gay male couple they were told they had a higher chance of adopting than a straight couple, “because the birth mother never felt replaced.” (The other odd quirk was that when it was time to provide sperm for the surrogacy procedure, the clinic produced lesbian porn magazines. Hello?) Back in 2001 when Bobbitt and Hanna decided to become parents, options were fewer so they chose overseas adoption. However, that meant only one of them could apply, representing himself as a single dad. Despite this, while Hanna was the adopting parent, Bobbitt never felt he had to hide, even in Vietnam. And he was easily able to readopt their son in Washington DC on their return, where two fathers adopting a child was and is perfectly legal. The bigger challenge came later, as it still does for many, over the issue of recognizing both fathers as the legal parents of their son. When Bobbitt and Hanna decided to move to find better public schools, they looked at Virginia. “But at that time I would have lost my parental rights,” Bobbitt said. In choosing surrogacy, Gordon and his partner had to confront the potentially difficult decision about who the biological father would be. “We didn’t do rock, paper, scissors,” he laughed. “We agreed early on who it would be.” Telling their daughter, now four, is on hold. “She has asked us already who’s tummy she came out of, and she has met her mother several times. She just doesn’t know it’s her mother,” Gordon said. Unlike Gordon and Bonetti with daughters, Bobbitt knew his son might be the victim of taunts that

12 Songs for your Gay Wedding

Whether you are hiring a band or hiring a DJ, you can’t disappoint guests with bad music at your wedding. Check out our roundup of current favorites making the rounds on gay wedding playlists everywhere, from Sam Smith acoustic ballads to divas Mimi and Queen Bey, there is something for everyone who wants to express their love with music.

01

Love on Top - Beyonce Beyonce’s inspiration of this song was Etta James. “When I played Etta James, it was the most I’ve learned about myself until the recording of this album. I used the same passion, honesty, with my vocals as I channeled Etta James.

04

All of Me - John Legend

05

Latch (Acoustic) - Sam Smith

06

1 + 1 - Beyonce

Used in Macklemore’s famous anthem “Same Love,” openly gay Lambert’s “She Keeps Me Warm” can stand strong on its own. This sweet yet strong ballad reminds us that love is patient and love is kind.

Yes. Maybe’s it’s cliche and overplayed but we couldn’t leave out. With no gender pronouns ever used, Legend’s “All of Me” is an epic love letter written from one human to another - proclaiming their gift of love.

Out singer Sam Smith breaks away from the electronic roots of this Disclosure song with this soft piano version. Smith’s voice soars high as he sings lyrics that evoke a sense of intimacy and the exhilaration of falling in love.

When I attended a recent friend’s wedding, I was floored when the couple took to the floor for their first dance to this powerful Beyonce ballad.

08 09

I Still Love You - Jennifer Hudson

10

Make You Feel My Love - Adele

11

My All - Mariah Carey

12

Can’t Help Falling in Love - Ingrid Michaelson

For the jazz enthusiast, this Edith Piaf tune is covered miraculously by Armstrong who begins the number with only his trumpet. With his instantly recognizable gravelly voice, he bends the lyrics with dexterity and expression.

Released in honor of marriage equality, this track would make for a great dance tune later on in the evening. JHud even made some appearances at gay weddings to perform the track, so add it to your playlist and she may pop up!

With just a piano, Adele’s gut wrenching vocals on the cover of this Bob Dylan classic reminds us that there is nothing you wouldn’t do for your partner.

People claim that Adele’s new track “A Million Years” is a rip off of this Mariah Carey classic. Singing about giving her all for love tonight, Mariah is the only diva you need to be there when you say, “I do.”

There is something soulful and delicate to this cover of Elvis’s powerful ballad. Timeless, this is the perfect first dance song for a couple who couldn’t help falling in love.

35

03

She Keeps Me Warm - Mary Lambert

This song was written to be a wedding song, and conceived wholeheartedly in the spirit of marriage equality. “I Choose You,” off the album, The Blessed Unrest, is related to celebrating romantic love and its many flavors.

La Vie en Rose - Louis Armstrong

When Spencer Stout used this song in a flashmob proposal to his partner, Dustin Reeser, he not only helped make it an international hit for Betty Who, but provided the perfect song for all gay weddings to follow.

Rules of Etiquette at a Gay Wedding

W

hen a friend, family member or loved one gets married, it’s natural to want their big day to be as perfect as possible. The same is true when you’re attending a gay or lesbian wedding, but if you’ve never been to one before, you might be a little unsure of the etiquette or traditions. The good news is that gay and lesbian weddings are a lot like straight ones -- with just a few important differences. Read on:

couple and give them what they’ve asked for, there might be a perfect gift out there that they didn’t even know they wanted. Giving a surprise present can be a meaningful way to show the couple how much you care about them, how well you know them, how much thought you’ve given to their gift, and how much you support their union. The key to giving wedding gifts off the registry is making sure they’re AWESOME.

1. FINDING THE RIGHT TERMINOLOGY

4. EXPECT DIFFERENT TRADITIONS

If this is your first time attending a gay wedding, be careful not to assume that you know which terms a couple prefers to use to refer to themselves and their union. While straight couples are increasingly turning toward less traditional labeling in their marriages, gay and lesbian couples are even more likely to adopt non-traditional terminology. For instance, if you’re at a lesbian wedding, don’t assume that the couple is the “bride and bride.” Some couples may prefer “bride and bridegroom,” “woman and woman,” “partners” or maybe something entirely different. However the couple has decided to define their union, it’s important to show your support and respect for them by using their chosen terminology. Pay attention to how they refer to each other, the words they’ve chosen to print on their invitations and programs, and the titles that they include in their ceremony. It shouldn’t take too much detective work to figure it out.

2. FINDING A CARD

February 04, 2016

36

We’ve come a long way in the last few decades. In the past, the best card you could hope to find for a gay wedding was a gender-neutral one, there are now countless options to choose from. It’s never been easier to congratulate a “Mr. & Mr.” or “Mrs. & Mrs.” on their special day, so don’t settle for a generic card. Finding the perfect card to reflect the couple getting married is a great way to add a personal touch to your present and show your support for their partnership.

3. GIFT GIVING BY KEVIN BROADY

When it comes to wedding gifts, some couples are registered at a local retail store where going off-registry is simply not allowed. Sometimes, however, it’s a good idea to break the rules. While it’s important to respect the wishes of the

Like straight weddings, gay and lesbian weddings can run the gamut from uber traditional to extremely non-conventional. So it is likely that you will see some things during a gay marriage that you haven’t seen before -- that’s half the fun! For example, at a gay wedding, you might have two grooms that each walk down a separate aisle at the same time, or the couple might choose to enter the ceremony together. Also, without a clear-cut “boys side” and “girls side”, the wedding party at a gay wedding will often be arranged by relationship. There might be a “Man of Honor” or “Best Woman” and the pairings going down the aisle probably won’t be limited to “boy-girl”. Just like old traditions, these new traditions give same-sex couples the opportunity to express their love for each other. Keep in mind that each decision that a couple makes about their wedding is made because it has special meaning to them.

5.

STARTING A FAMILY

This well-meaning question can be uncomfortable for straight couples, but at a gay wedding this topic should be especially off-limits. The decision to start a family is a deeply personal one. Some gay couples may choose not to have children, and for them questions about their plans may seem that you are prying into their personal business. For gay couples that do hope to have children, they will have lots of important decisions to make about adoption, in vitro fertilization or surrogacy -- all of which are, frankly, none of your business. For the time being, simply congratulate the happy couple on their nuptials and enjoy this special moment with them. When and if they decide to expand their family, they’ll be sure to share the news with you. Until then, just be content to celebrate their love and keep your nose out of it.

7. BE NICE OR SHUT UP

This should be a no-brainer, but using a couple’s big day to express your negative views on gay marriage is completely inappropriate. If you find yourself feeling uncomfortable with the idea of attending a gay wedding, there are a few things you should consider: Keep in mind that if you are close enough to the couple to be invited to their wedding, chances are that they already know your stance on gay marriage. So be hapy the couple has chosen to invite you, despite your difference of opinion. If you choose to attend the wedding, make sure that you are doing so from a place of love and that you are ready to be supportive of the couple on their big day. If you decide it would be best for you not to attend, simply reply with your regrets. It’s not necessary to provide your reason for not attending and doing so would only be hurtful to the couple.

8. HAVE FUN

With all this talk of gay or lesbian weddings, it should still go without saying that, at its core, a “gay marriage” is simply a marriage. Whatever differences there may be, you are there to celebrate two people who have pledged their love and lives to one another -- so enjoy every moment. Laugh, drink champagne, take lots of pictures and maybe even find someone special on the dance floor.

GAY-FRIENDLY WEDDING GIFTS WORTH BUYING OFF-REGISTRY

floridaagenda.com

The LGBT community has come a long way this year with the historic Supreme Court ruling declaring gay marriage to be legal across the country. However, the work in ensuring marriage equality isn’t done yet and many gay couples will face negative comments and attacks from unexpected places, including co-workers, wedding vendors, and their own family members. All of this can take an emotional toll. Taking a moment to let the couple know that you are celebrating not just their union, but their right to make that commitment to one another will mean a lot to them.

t the Pride Center, two leading women oversee two different religious organizations that happen to use the same space. Pastor Leslie Tipton holds church services on Wednesday and Sundays, while Rabbi Noah Kitty holds services Friday evening. They are also both wedding officiates, lending their services and guidance to same sex couples looking to get hitched. Pastor Leslie Tipton has been the senior pastor at SpiritSong Wilton Manors, a Christian non-denominational church that operates out of the Pride Center, for four years. The church is celebrating its 17th year anniversary in August. Tipton has been involved with this Church since 2000 when she moved here to South Florida. She joined the church right away as a volunteer and then was hired to work for the church as a pastor in 2007. For the past four years, she has been the senior pastor. Rabbi Noah Kitty has been the Executive Director and rabbi at Congregation Etz Chaim since 2010. Before that, she was a self proclaimed “Jew in the pew.” When she first came to the synagogue, she was just a regular member. Not in a leadership position, she volunteered when the Rabbi left and then kept being invited to take on more and more leadership roles. But she came to

South Florida originally to take care of her mom after her father suddenly passed away in 2002. Tipton came to South Florida around the same time. “I moved here with my ex partner. I thought that was the reason. The real reason was to get me into the church,” Tipton told me when I sat down with the two women in Rabbi Kitty’s office. “God has plans for all of us,” Kitty replied. “I do a lot of weddings,” Tipton says. “I do them here or at people’s homes or venues. I have probably done 20 weddings since June of last year.” Kitty hasn’t done quite as many. “I have been doing commitment ceremonies since 1989. But I have not been asked to do a lot of formal weddings since the decision came down. Mostly because by the time the decision came down here in Florida, most of our members or Jews in the area were already married in New York or Vermont or Ohio. It became legal here in Florida, their status was upgraded, and then it became a federal statute. So they were already married as it were.” That’s actually how Tipton got married to her wife in 2012. “I was hired to do a wedding in Manhattan by a couple that lived here on December 12, 2012. So they paid for my flight and hotel stay. I said to Sandy, ‘Why don’t you come with

me?’ We got married the day after they did. It was really neat.” When going through the process of planning a ceremony for same sex couples, Tipton has found that same sex couples want their experience to be unique and special for them. “They want scripture to be in their wedding but they want it to be something that isn’t heard at every other wedding. They want something that is going to be meaningful to them. I usually ask them is there a reading that is especially meaningful to you? Or is there something you have heard before that you want to explore? It is important to them that their wedding be their wedding and not just cut and paste.” Part of Tipton’s role is discover and explore new readings or pieces and bring it to the couple. “ I recently did a wedding where they wanted the portion that Justice Kennedy wrote about equality of marriage. And that was just last Friday. I read that as well.” Kitty tries to communicate the importance of marriage: “What I try to impress upon couples is that I have found in my work with the LGBT community and in my life in the LGBT community is that many people I have known have tended to couple and uncouple rather quickly. So while they might be monogamous. it is more like serial

The most important part of the Gay Wedding Cake: The Same-Sex Topper

/floridaagenda

47

You’ve planned your wedding like a pro. You’ve picked the date, you’ve selected a venue, you’ve thought about music, you’ve planned your outfit. The transportation is set, the minister has been confirmed, the menu is fixed, and the guests have been invited. The all important wedding cake is often supplied by whoever is catering the reception. Not so, however, for the cake topper. That detail is completely up to you. For a straight couple, the selection of a cake topper is relatively simple. There are hundreds of choices—each more adorable than the next. But what of the same-sex couple. Two men or two women on top of the cake. Now that’s not so easy to find. And what if one men is black or one of the women is dressing in a tuxedo. Trust me when I say, this presents a problem. Or at least until last year, it used to. While there have been many pop-up companies racing to fill the void for same-sex topped in resin, plastic, wood and cloth, no one comes close to providing a customized product as well as a company from Hong Kong (of all places) calling itself WowMiniMe. WowMiniMe is unique among topper manufacturers because each one it makes is customized especially for you. They call their service “Head to Toe” custom, and all it requires are photos of the spouses in appropriate attire to be uploaded to the company at service@wowminime.com. The firm will prepare a proof of suggested designs for your topper, customized right down to the faces on the pieces. The cost for the topper isn’t cheap, totaling $149 plus shipping, but the effect is stunning, and will provide a truly unique momento of your very special day. Further details about wowminime can be found on wowminime.com, with complete instructions and suggested designs. WowMiniMe. An idea whose time has come.

Perfect Honeymoons, Handpicked

Just for You

BY RICHARD HACK

February 04, 2016

48

After the perfect wedding, the perfect honeymoon awaits. While all of Fort Lauderdale, Miami and the Palm Beaches provide an abundance of wonderful alternatives to wander and wonder, statistically speaking, there are more honeymooners that travel out of town than remain for the weeks following their nuptials. Following are some of their favorite choices, with our own personal recommendations to keep the sunshine at your side. Before compiling this list, we chatted with Richard Safaty of Freedom Travel, who is used to helping LGBT couples plan their honeymoons. “Couples usually seek a destination that neither have been to before. They want to share a new experience together. That is one of the main things that is important. Also, safety. They want to travel somewhere were they are going to be in a comfortable, gay friendly atmosphere where above all else they feel safe.

While not the first place you might think to honeymoon, Uruguay is very gay friendly, having voted for samesex marriage in 2010. The exotic Punta del Este and the boho-chic enclave of José Ignacio are less than a hundred miles up the stunning coastline from the capital of Montevideo and primed for gay business. The boutique, gay-owned Casa Sarandi guesthouse is a great starting point for exploring the city or try one of the surprisingly affordable rooms of Casapueblo, the whitewashed cement citadel created by the late artist Carlos Páez Vilaró.

ICELAND

Though Provincetown is better known, the coast of Maine is far more untouched and charming. The state voted for same-sex marriage in 2012, and every part of the coastline has romance written in the rocks and sand. The White Barn Inn in the seaside village of Kennebunkport shouldn’t be missed. Historically a shipbuilding and fishing village for well over a century, the town has been a popular summer colony and seaside tourist destination. You’ll remember it also has the Summer White House of George W. Bush. Just north of Kennebunkport is Old Orchard Beach, with Dickinson’s Candy Factory at 42 Old Orchard Street. It is the kind of place that exists only in films. Its quaint, its romantic, and home to Michael Dickinson. For a honeymoon that’s a party.

One of the gayest cities in all of Spain, Sitges sits on the seaside where the Platjador holds reign right across from the gay beach. The town is full of cathedrals and museums, while the beach is sexy with clothing optional sections. Making things muy perfecto, the hotel’s restaurant serves brunch until noon every day. So civilized. P.S. Same-sex marriage has been legal in Spain since 2005.

VIEQUES As a territory of the U.S., the island of Vieques, eight miles off the Puerto Rican coast, has the advantage of using U.S. currency and pricing, taking some of the mystery out of the honeymoon budget. While Vieques is hardly cheap, it does have extraordinary beaches. Splurge on lodgings at the W Retreat and Spa, or splurge even further and rent an entire Prouve-style villa, in the form of the Casa de Crystal, for $439 a night. Either way, you can take short day trips back to the mainland to explore Old San Juan, or to spend the night bouncing around the city’s many gay bars and clubs.

AMSTERDAM Plan your honeymoon in Amsterdam during the summer, and time it to see the Drag Queen Olympics, running from late July to early August coupled with the Pride Parade which floats done the canals. There’s excursions to the Van Gogh Museum, the Anne Frank House, shopping along P.C. Hooftstraat, or peoplewatching in the city’s trendy Jordaan District. There’s any number of designer hotels carved into heritage spaces; the Hoxton, in five former canal houses, or the Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht, in what was once a library, and is now a wonderland designed by the inimitable Netherlands-born designer Marcel Wanders.

MOOREA

Though LGBT activists in Greece are still fighting for marriage equality, there is nothing discriminatory about Santorini. From one end of the Greek island to the other, the country remains a gay travel hotspot. Actually formed from five islands that have been filled in with volcanic lava, Santorini is a international honeymoon destination best reached by plane or ship from Piraeus. The gayest avenue is the Tropical in the capital city of Fira, with its amazing view of the caldera and the steep cliffs that drop into the deep blue ocean. Full of very familiar celebrities and politicians looking for an escape, the nightclubs in Fira are the perfect place to work up a sweat for honeymoon activities later on in the night. Our favorite place to stay is the Petit Palace Suites Hotel, overlooking the Aegean Sea.

PARIS Despite its recent terrorist activities, the charm of Paris is both seductive and enduring. Honeymoon in this city and expect to pay a premium, but this kind of romance is priceless. The highceilinged rooms full of endless toile and Louis XV-style details at the Hôtel Lancaster come highly recommended and the hotel gets our nod for the best honeymoon suite in town. This luxury hotel is in an 1889 townhouse that sits a block from Avenue des Champs-Élysées--perfect for an after dinner stroll or that must-have shopping excursion. Most gay bars are located in the 3rd and 4th arrondissement of Paris in an area called Le Marais. Drop into any of its restaurants or small shops, and meet other gays and lesbians from around the world celebrating their honeymoons as well.

49

Though you’ve probably never heard of Moorea, it’s one of the most beautiful spots on earth. If the thought of dropping off the radar for your entire honeymoon pleases you, there is no better place than this less popular sister of Bora-Bora. By far the best hotel on this island of great hotels is the Hilton Moorea Lagoon and Spa. There’s overwater bungalows or in hotel suites, each with its own particular selling points. Like Tahiti and Bora-Bora, which are just a short ferry boat ride away, Moorea has granted LGBT travelers full protection status since France passed marriage equality in 2013.

SANTORINI

February 04, 2016

Johanna Sigurdardottir was the first openly gay head of state in the world. The divorced former prime minister entered a civil union with Icelanic novelist Jónína Leósdóttir, who Johanna married in 2010, when same-sex marriage was legalized in Iceland. The liberal Nordic country makes a perfect honeymoon for gays and lesbians, with most of the action naturally centered in the capital town of Reykjavik. There you can find a handful of gay owned and operated bed and breakfasts, as well as the luxurious 101 Hotel, which boasts nice views of the harbor and old town. Another perk: Iceland has some of the lowest airfares in the world. A flight from Boston to Reykjavik has been known to go as low as $99.

When it comes to visions of paradise, few places in the world can outdo the islands of Maui and Kauai in Hawaii. King Kamehameha was the first ruling monarch to approve of same-sex unions for his army warriors back in 1812. With the passage of Hawaii Marriage Equality Act in 2013, Hawaii’s reputation as the most popular honeymoon destination for gay couples was born. While Maui has more nightlife, Kauai has more dramatic scenery including the peaks of the Na Pali Coast, primeval rainforest, red-rock cliffs of Waimea Canyon, and Wailua Falls. Best hotel deal on either island is to be found on Maui at the Wailea Grand Champions.

Q:

BY JAMEER BAPTISTE

What is the secret to a long-term relationship? When you’re touched by the love bug, you just can’t help but think it’s going to be everlasting. But once the honeymoon stage ends, the real work begins. Here’s advice from five couples that have withstood the test of time and are still going strong.

NADINE AND ANDREA SMITH 11 YEARS STRONG

BEN LYMAN AND BRUCE MICHAEL CUSHMAN AND VELVET LENORE HORWICH 9 YEARS STRONG 16 YEARS STRONG

For Nadine and Andrea Smith, who have been married for 7 years out of the 11 years they have been together, love endures when a couple is supportive, truthful and forgiving. “We support each other’s dreams, tell the truth even when it isn’t the easiest path, and we forgive more than we quarrel,” said Nadine. “Love comes first.”

Ben and Bruce Horwich, owners of Miami’s gay retail store Creative Male, had this to say about longevity in a relationship: “The secret to a long-term relationship is really understanding the other person and accepting who they are,” conveyed Bruce. “Don’t look to change them. Enjoy and respect each other’s differences.” “Bruce and I have formed a trusting positive partnership mainly because we respect, understand and appreciate each other,” commented Ben. “Plus, we never sweat the small stuff.”

Photographer Michael Cushman and Entertainer Velvet Lenore not only love together, they work together too. Here’s how they’ve kept their relationship going strong. “Know each other, learn each others nuances, and work as a team,” suggested Michael. “Working together helps with getting though any situation that might arise. And listen. Effective communication also helps.” “Respect and communication are key. Always know each others whereabouts and respect each other’s space,” said Velvet. “Talk about everything and listen to how the other one feels, so you both are on the same page. Lastly, make time to do nice things together, even if your schedules get crazy.”

JERRY CHASEN AND MARK KIRBY 16 YEARS STRONG

ROBERT LAMAS AND MILANCITA RODRIGUEZ 5 YEARS STRONG

Jerry Chasen and Mark Kirby are no stranger to long-lasting love. They have been together since 2000 and decided to show their love for each in 2006 with a commitment ceremony and then again in 2011 when they legally wed. Together they both agree that there are four things that contribute to an everlasting relationship. “Honesty, respect, laughter, and great sex!”

Robert Lamas, a RN, and Milancita Rodriguez, owner of Milancita.com, have been together for five blissful years. And this month on February 21, they will be celebrating their sixth anniversary. Here’s their advice for a long-lasting relationship. “The secret to a good relationship is to keep dating as if it were your first time out,” advised Robert. “Love is important in any relationship; the second part is respect.” “It takes two to make a relationship work, so leave the “me, me, me” out of the equation, unless you want to do some major problem solving,” says Milancita. “Make sacrifices for your significant other. Your relationship is considered to be a sign of commitment.”
