HOMELESS LGBT YOUTH FACTS

WiRLD Foundation launches as new non-profit

n

February 25, 2016

LOS ANGELES – The WiRLD Foundation, a new non-profit organization, has been formed to deliver resources to homeless LGBT youth rejected by their families and to aid in other worthy causes. “There is a silent epidemic in America of tens of thousands of children living on the streets because of their sexual orientation – and it’s time not only for attention to this issue, but decisive action to be taken,” said Bobby Blair, LGBT media mogul. Blair, a former international world-ranked tennis professional, has written a book, Hiding Inside the Baseline, that chronicles his own desperation and struggles as a closeted gay athlete. His story is currently airing as a television documentary. “The very first objective of the WiRLD Foundation will be to get homeless youth off the streets and into shelters where they can find food, comfort and a helping hand,” said Blair. “I believe that every single person in this world deserves to have a coach and mentor to guide them so they can achieve their true potential and live their truth.” “If the desperation of our gay, lesbian and transgendered sons and daughters is important to you, please join us and help,” he continued. “We welcome

nominations to our proposed 15-member Board of Directors as well as volunteers, especially by those with experience in social work and counseling. Anyone wanting to help in this cause will be welcomed.” The executive director of the foundation will be Brian Neal, Blair’s life and business partner who has an extensive background in LGBT charities and is the co-founder of Multimedia Platforms Inc. A fitness instructor by training, Neal was the inspiration behind the Brian Neal Fitness & Health Foundation, started in April 2011, which helped countless number of HIV-positive men and women in South Florida successfully get access to fitness programs and health training facilities. “The WiRLD Foundation will replace the BNFHF but focus on all areas of need in the LGBT community, not just HIV,” said Neal. “It is our intention also to help fund other deserving charities. We want to help wherever help is needed in the LGBT community.” Blair is the founder and CEO of Multimedia Platforms Worldwide, the only publicly-traded LGBT media company which owns and operates print and digital media in the three largest gay meccas in the nation: New York City, Los Angeles and South/Central Florida. The

company’s top brands include Frontiers magazine in Los Angeles; Florida Agenda, the weekly newspaper of record in South Florida; multi-city travel guides called WiRLD City Guides (formerly FunMaps); as well as entertainment guides Guy magazine and Next magazine in New York City and South Florida, respectively. Collectively, the brands reach approximately 7.5 million readers and 4+ million unique online users annually. MMPW’s WiRLD digital hub features a global news stand, global business directory, community LGBT network, a firstof-the kind rewards program and an online entertainment network to launch during the second quarter of 2016. WiRLD.com is currently in beta testing. “The WiRLD Foundation is the charitable arm of our WiRLD digital brand,” explained Neal. The WiRLD Foundation’s inaugural fundraising event will be “Dancing with the South Florida Stars,” a fun-filled evening during which LGBT community leaders and business people are paired with local celebrity entertainers. The event has been a staple in South Florida for the BNFHF, and will now be expanded with similar events in Los Angeles and New York. nn

Next magazine, the number one-ranked LGBTQ weekly entertainment brand in North America, will be shaking up entertainment publishing in South and Central Florida and delighting tens of thousands of readers in print and online when it makes its debut next week. The top choice by New Yorkers for the past 23 years, Next is consistently ranked by industry insiders as the most authoritative LGBTQ entertainment, nightlife and lifestyle magazine and is recognized the world over. The cutting-edge digital and print brand, known for its exclusive celebrity interviews and original content, will make its debut in Florida on March 3 with a state-of-the-art online hub, free electronic subscriptions to weekly e-zines as well as print editions serving Miami and Fort Lauderdale (weekly) and Orlando, Tampa and St. Petersburg (monthly). The combined brand is expected to reach an audience via web, mobile and print estimated at one million local and international readers per month. “This is a huge, huge step for

us to improve the value of the products we offer our readers and advertisers and we could not be more excited,” said Bobby Blair, CEO of Multimedia Platforms Worldwide (MMP), which purchased the New York Next magazine last June. “Next magazine is known and respected for its content, photography and social interaction with its readers and followers. It is simply the best – and that’s what we want for Florida and what our readers and advertisers in Florida expect from us.” Guy magazine, which Blair and Brian Neal, his life and business partner, founded six years ago, and which has also been published by MMP, will be merged and consolidated into Next to allow the company to market and grow a single entertainment brand. The final souvenir collector’s edition of Guy hits the streets of South Florida this Thursday. “Next is an iconic brand that’s known to LGBT promoters, celebrities and entertainment and nightlife industry leaders everywhere,” said Peter Jackson, MMP president and executive group publisher. “It makes sense to

expand the brand to Florida and beyond, build on the strength of the Next name and solidify our position as the market leader.” So what can readers expect from Next when the inaugural editions are published next Thursday? “Expect something amazing!” said Kevin Hopper, VP/Operations, who is supervising the launch with editor Diego Wyatt. “Next will be the one source to go to for hyper-local content as well as the best in LGBT entertainment and interviews on a national level. We will continue to focus the spotlight on the hottest venues and personalities, to probe the under-the-radar hot spots, and introduce readers to cutting edge entertainment.” The first issues of Next magazine South Florida and Next magazine Central Florida will be released on March 3rd with two very special inaugural editions curated specifically for their separate markets. Content will also be accessible online at NextMagazine.com and at WiRLD.com, MMP’s new global digital media hub, phase 1 of which is currently in beta testing mode. Next magazine South Florida

will be distributed throughout Miami, South Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Wilton Manors, and West Palm Beach. Next magazine Central Florida will be distributed throughout Tampa, Orlando, and St. Petersburg. About Multimedia Platforms Multimedia Platforms Inc. (“MMPW”) is an industry-leading multimedia, technology and publishing company that delivers content and advertising to one of the most sought-after demographics in the world, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) population. MMPW’s top brands include Frontiers magazine, Florida Agenda newspaper, WiRLD City Guides (formerly FunMaps) and Next magazine representing approximately 7.5 million readers annually. MMPW’s WiRLD digital hub features a global news stand, global business directory, community LGBT network, a first of the kind rewards program and an online entertainment network to launch during the second quarter of 2016. Stonewall Pride 2016: Full of surprises

BY RICHARD HACK

WILTON MANORS— Plans are quickly falling into place for this year’s Stonewall Parade & Street Festival, which returns to Wilton Drive on Saturday June 18th. The event’s organizers exposed details of their plans at a meeting held last week at the Hagen Park Community Center with Wilton Manors City Manager Leigh Ann Henderson and Wilton Manors Entertainment Group (WMEG) executive director Jeffrey Sterling. The Stonewall Parade & Street Festival is now in its 18th year. This year’s event will feature five stages (an increase of two) on the Drive, with liquor and beverage sponsorships supported by the various LGBT clubs and bars along the popular parade route. Each of the five stages will be individually sponsored, with the rights to select entertainment, sound and lighting remaining with the sponsors. In previous years, the stage were coordinated by the WMEG. New this year will be Stonewall Village, an interactive area

at Hagen Park, which will highlight LGBT cultural and historic achievements, offer a family area with activities and refreshments, and enhance the daytime schedule for festivalgoers. The Village will open at 11 am and continue until 3 pm in the afternoon, when the focus will move onto the Drive proper. At 3 pm, the various booths and stands will open for business along the Drive, where an estimated 50,000 guests are expected. The Wilton Manors Stonewall Parade is slated to begin at 6 pm, followed by a street party well into the night. “The level of enthusiasm and the passion of these individuals and community leaders is excit-

ing,” offered WMEG executive director Jeffrey Sterling. “It means that the public cares about making this a successful and meaningful event, from top to bottom.” Sterling said that planning for the 2016 festival was proceeding at a smooth and organized pace. He also noted that IDK Event Productions, which produces several major LGBT events across the country, including San Francisco Pride and Oakland (California) Pride, has been secured to assist with festival operations and vendor coordination. In addition to the Festival and Parade, other events will unfold during the Pride month of June

including the Matthew Shepard musical drama “Not in My Town,” on June 17, at Sunshine Cathedral, and educational and cultural programs to be hosted at the Stonewall National Museum and Archives. Patrick Volkert and Mark Hunter, the owners of Hunters Nightclub in the Shoppes of Wilton Manors, were among several bar owners and restaurateurs who attended to listen, and to offer their opinions and perspective. “It’s very important for this community,” said Volkert. “The business owners and the public need to work together to help make this a success for everyone.” nn

Bishop Makalani-MaHee

February 25, 2016

14

Deeply religious even from an early age, Bishop Makalani-MaHee fought internal demons that have directed his life and defined his career. Born into a Pentecostal family in the Bronx, Makalani-MaHee struggled with his gender identity for as long as he can remember. When he was unable to find easy answers within the religion that had been taught to him, he created his own internal guidance system based on a higher power centered on love. Today, Makalani-MaHee is the transgender program coordinator for the Florida Department of Health in Broward County. With many challenges facing the trans community, trans women of color are especially left at a disadvantage. Saturday evening, 25-year-old Maya Young was brutally stabbed to death in Philadelphia, making her the latest causality of an epidemic of violence against this marginalized community. One of our ‘Movers and Shakers’ profiled in last year’s inaugural round-up of Florida’s 100 brightest LGBT community members, we had the opportunity to dive deeper with Makalani-MaHee. We discussed his passion, black history, his transition, and the daunting obstacles faced by trans women of color.

ALEXANDER KACALA: Tell our readers about the work you do with the trans community here in Broward County. MAKALANI-MAHEE: One of the things that I am charged with doing in my capacity as the transgender program coordinator for the Florida Department of Health in Broward County is of course making sure we reduce the incidence of HIV infection and STI infection. My primary responsibility is to provide HIV education, risk reduction and linkage to trans woman who are at risk as well as making sure we are really addressing the social stigma that puts people at risk. It’s not just about talking about HIV infection, STIs and getting people linked to PrEP. It’s also about making sure they have employment, that they are linked into medical care, linked into mental health care. We are taking a holistic approach to making sure the whole person is being treated and affirmed when it comes to the transgender community here in Broward County. KACALA: What are the obstacles trans men and women of color have to overcome in this community? MAKALANI-MAHEE: Employment, specifically when you talk about trans woman of color. They face discrimination when it comes to employment. It makes it difficult for you to be able to support yourself, to maintain housing much less actual valid health care as opposed to black market hormones. So if you have no employment, which leads to no housing, no medical insurance to link you

into medical care than your options are very limited and a lot of these women are faced with doing survival sex work. Then that raises your incidence for not only HIV but STIs as well. So, it’s not just about employment. It’s about employment being a gateway to having a balanced, meaningful life. KACALA: Tell me about your journey transitioning. MAKALANI-MAHEE: I spent over 25 years as an activist in the community and was very public as a radical activist and organizer. People were already familiar with me. I think that on a community level people had to adjust because they had this way of relating to me as a woman for 25 plus years. But I’m also glad the community was able to struggle with that adjustment. I was extremely blessed with community support. There was such an out pouring of support emotionally and even financially. That I know most people do not receive. I recognize that was extremely blessed to receive. When it comes to my immediate family, coming to terms with my gender transition we are still trying to navigate. I haven’t spoken to my mother since the day I tried to tell her about my decision to transition. I understand why a lot of people are hesitant to be their authentic self to come out as trans. In this society, where it is estimated that less than 8% of the population know someone who is trans, we are still portrayed as freaks, we are still perceived as people who want to mess with “God’s creation” and messing with our gender. It is not perceived as us stepping into our authentic self’s.

DISCRIMINATION: BLACKS OR GAYS....IT’S STILL UNACCEPTABLE

F

ifty-five years ago, the famous beaches of Fort Lauderdale were clean, wide, and totally segregated. Looking out across the fine sand today, where blacks, whites, Asians and Latinos frolic freely with one another, it is difficult to imagine a time when “colored folk” had their own beach in town.

February 25, 2016

16

Well, more accurately, it wasn’t in Fort Lauderdale at all. It was down in Hollywood at John U. Lloyd State Beach, a place then so remote that there were no roads in or out, and access was available only by boat or dune buggy. It hadn’t always been that way, of course. Way back in 1927, when the lynching of blacks was rather commonplace in these parts, By the “colored” Richard beach was a Hack rough patch of rocks and scrub grass full of broken glass and patches of trash on the northern edge of town. All that changed in 1953, when Arthur T. Galt sold his last bit of ocean front land to developers and the high-rise condos of Galt Ocean Mile were born.

There, the Jewish population took hold, and the blacks were pushed south to the aforementioned John U. Lloyd State Beach, where they remained— quiet, if not content, until 1961. On July 4, 1961, some local blacks held by Dr. Von D. Mizell and civil rights leader Eula Johnson led a wade-in at the white beach at the intersection of Las Olas Boulevard and AIA. As the outraged white beachgoers looked on in astonishment, Dr. Mizell and Johnson, and a group of their friends, frolicked in the ocean for a full 45 minutes before being asked to leave by the police. They left, but continued to comeback for the remainder of the summer, forcing the city to sue the NAACP in an effort to stop the daily wade-ins which had disrupted the tourist traffic and upset the white locals. Today, such discrimination seems unfathomable. And non-discrimination policies a given. Yet, here we are, 55 years later, on the same corner of Las

Olas and AIA engaged in another protest. This time, however, it’s not the blacks who are protesting; but rather, the gays who have lost their effort in Tallahassee to pass the Florida Competitive Workplace Act. It is just as unconscionable in 2016 that the LGBT community can be fired from a job or refused accommodations such as a hotel room due to their sexual orientation and gender identity than in was in 1961 for blacks to be denied access to the ocean. Banning discrimination is more than just good public policy. It’s a necessity for effective business. Some of the state’s biggest employers support the Competitive Workplace Act, including Carnival Cruise Lines, Florida Blue, AT&T, Walt Disney World, CSX Transportation, Tech Data Corporation, Darden Restaurants, NextEra Energy, Office Depot, Home Shopping Network, Marriott and Wells Fargo. “Workforce goes where it’s welcome,” Bob O’Malley of CSX said at a press conference before the Judiciary Committee hearing, as reported by the News Service. “And entrepreneurs go where

they’re welcome.” So too do tourists, our major commodity in the Sunshine State. And all the clever media campaigns and tricky slogans in the world cannot gloss over the fact that Florida as a state remains bigoted and backward, even as it moves to continue to covet the readily disposable LGBT dollar. As we honor Black History Month, we remind ourselves we deserve better, just as we did in 1961.

Richard Hack is the awardwinning author of 26 books, and the Vice President of Content for Multimedia Platforms’ publications.

ALL THINGS CONSIDERED

PAUL BERGE

BERNIE SANDERS: (Bernie Sanders website): “Senator Sanders has been a longtime supporter of LGBT rights. In 1983, during his first term as Mayor of Burlington, Sen. Sanders supported the city’s first ever Pride Parade. He later signed a city ordinance banning housing discrimination. When he served in the House of Representatives, then-Congressman Sanders voted against “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in 1993 and the socalled “Defense of Marriage Act” in 1996. Sen. Sanders hailed the landmark Supreme Court decisions in 2013 and 2015 which struck down DOMA and recognized same-sex marriage is a right in all 50 states, calling the decisions a “victory for same-sex couples across our country as well as all those seeking to live in a nation where every citizen is afforded equal rights.” DONALD TRUMP: (Towerload 2/18/16) “While appearing on a show called The Brody File on The Christian Broadcasting Network, Trump responded to claims made by the Log Cabin Republicans that he is the most pro-gay candidate currently running in the GOP primary for president. As Right Wing Watch points out, Trump replied, “Well I haven’t heard. I have not heard that at all.” Host David Brody pressed Trump, “Well, what’s your reaction that because there are evangelicals out there that want to be able to trust you on traditional marriage and other issues.” Trump responded, “I think they can trust me. They can trust me on traditional marriage.” So, there you have it, words out of their mouths, whether you believe them or not. Though it is something that still baffles me, there will be many LGBT persons voting for the candidates who would like to send them to another island, tell them their relationships shouldn’t or don’t exist or want to send them far, far away - and that’s just to start. To each her/ his own. Either way, no matter how, just make sure you VOICE YOUR CHOICE AND VOTE! No excuses accepted! I leave you with the words of Franklin D. Roosevelt: Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves and the only way they could do this is by not voting. February 25, 2016

I chose the most current commentary I could find from each of the remaining “prominent” candidates on both sides of the party lines. TED CRUZ: (Towerload 2/18/16) “Again touching on Obergefell, Cruz said, “I think that decision was fundamentally illegitimate. It was lawless. It was completely inconsistent with the constitution. It will not stand.” As for so-called “religious liberty”, Cruz added, “[I]f I’m elected president I intend on the first day I enter office to instruct… every government agency that the persecution of religious liberty ends today.” HILLARY CLINTON: (CBS News 6/27/15) “This morning love triumphed in the highest court in our land,” she said, before quoting from the majority decision passed down earlier Friday, and allowed same-sex couples to marry. “They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law and the Constitution grants them that right.” Clinton took aim at her Republican opponents, chiding them for their objections to the Supreme Court’s rulings on both same-sex marriage and, earlier in the week, the Affordable Care Act. Many of the Republican candidates “seemed determined to lead us right back into the past,” she said. Without naming him, Clinton called out Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who has yet to announce his bid for the Oval Office, for his suggestion of a constitutional amendment to reinstate the power of the states to define marriage. “Instead of trying to turn back the clock,” Clinton said to applause, “they should be joining us in saying loudly and clearly no, no to discrimination once and for all.” MARCO RUBIO: (Media ITE) “We are going to be a country that says life begins at conception and the life is worthy of the protection of our laws. We are going to be a country that says a marriage is between one man and one woman.”

Forty-years ago, I voted in my first election and can’t think of one I have missed. It is not only my civic responsibility, it is a right not everyone in our world has. Voting is just one of many ways to voice our opinion. We may not always get the results we hope for when we vote, but I’d rather lose knowing I spoke up in some form. Nothing frosts my backside more than people who don’t vote, yet do nothing but blame everyone else for the results. On March 15, 2016, it will be Florida’s time to vote in the Primary Election. One of many things I consider when I vote is the person who has my back, not who wants to put a knife in it. By Rev. Yes, I realize there is Joel more to a candidate than what they feel about the Slotnick LGBT community, but it’s an important part of today’s world, especially since “We” seem to be part of their topic, and not everyone is happy about that. I did a bit of research when it comes to “Us.”

LGBT Rights Evolution

February 25, 2016

18

I’m a big fan of evolution. It’s a case-closed issue for me. Empirical, period. That’s why I don’t buy the argument that the LGBT community should support Bernie Sanders over Hillary Clinton because Clinton only recently “evolved” into a supporter of LGBT rights. Evolving is good. It means she learned and it means advocacy worked and we should keep doing it. There are plenty of other good reasons to support Sanders over Clinton, but who arrived first at the pro-LGBT finish line isn’t one of them. LPAC, the lesbian political BY PAC, was the LINDA first national PENTZ LGBTQ organization to endorse Clinton’s campaign for the presidency, way back in April 2015. The announcement was reinforced by a statement from LPAC member and tennis legend, Billie Jean King, who co-chairs LPAC’s Lesbians 4 Hillary grassroots campaign. “Hillary Clinton is a proven leader and she has a strong track record when it comes to inclusion — specifically for women and the LGBTQ community,” King said. “Her entire career has been a road map

to get her to this moment and she has earned my respect and my vote to become the next President of the United States of America.” The LPAC board decision to endorse Clinton was unanimous, but was it a difficult one I wondered, given Sanders’ strong views and Hillary Clinton is a proven leader and she has a strong record on LGBT and track record when it comes to inclusion — specifically for social justice women and the LGBTQ community,” King said. issues? “It was not contenWhoever the nominee is #Votetious,” Shipp told me when we Whoever the nominee Blue. Log Cabin Republicans BY D’ANNE WITOWSKI

n

February 25, 2016

20

As a kid, I loved Log Cabin pancake syrup. Not only that, but I thought real maple syrup was gross. Then I grew up. And I no longer believed the dumb things I believed when I was young and stupid -- like corn syrup with brown dye being superior to the real thing. Hey, you live and you learn, right? Unless, of course, you’re a Log Cabin Republican. Then all you want is the fake stuff. And by fake stuff, I mean the delusion that if you keep supporting Republicans, then Republicans will one day support you back. All evidence points to the contrary. And yet LCR just can’t quit the GOP. The reason? Log Cabin Republicans don’t really care about LGBT rights. Their concerns really aren’t much different from Republicans who live in more modern housing: amassing money and power and to hell with anyone who doesn’t have it. You don’t have to look any further than the current slate of Republicans vying to get the party’s nomination for president. All of them are vocally antiLGBT. And yet Log Cabin Republicans would rather see someone like Trump or Cruz get elected than see a

Democrat win. Case in point: LCR recently released a rather bizarre anti-Clinton ad that took her to task for her slow-roll when it came to LGBT rights. The ad begins with ominous music and the words, “Was Hillary Clinton a gay rights advocate when it counted?” over a black screen. Then it cuts to a 2004 interview where Clinton says, “I do not support gay marriage.” The ad seems to be suggesting that 2004 was “when it counted” and that, for some reason, now it doesn’t count at all. What was so special about 2004? Was it because President George W. Bush, a candidate that they supported in 2000, was voicing support for an anti-gay marriage amendment to the Constitution? LCR got their feelings so hurt that they chose not to endorse GWB in 2004. And, yeah, it does really suck that Clinton didn’t support LGBT people years ago. She absolutely should have. But Log Cabin Republicans seem to be the only people who find it unforgivable. Everybody else is like, “Fucking finally, Hillz.” And let’s not forget that even though Clinton smugly told Chris Matthews in

2002, “No,” when he asked if New York should recognize gay marriage (a clip LCR uses in the ad, though it comes after two clips from the magical year of 2004), she’s light years ahead of all of the Republican candidates on issues of equality. So is Bernie Sanders, who is also featured in the ad in a 2015 clip from The Rachel Maddow Show. “It’s great that people evolve and change their minds,” he says, “but it’s important to stand up when the going is tough.” So is LCR endorsing Sanders? No. They’re just using him to illustrate how much they hate Clinton who was, according to their ad, “Wrong on gay rights when it mattered.” Because it doesn’t matter now I guess. We might as well elect Ted Cruz, amirite? LCR’s YouTube description for the ad, by the way, reads, “On LGBT rights, Hillary Clinton has led from behind.” Which more aptly describes LCR. And not just because of the obvious gay joke. As LCR touts, “Gay and lesbian Republicans have chosen to transform the GOP from the inside.” Which is true. And let us never forget the sad fact that being Republican is a choice. Pray for them. nn

TELLING SECRETS

February 25, 2016

I am really good at keeping secrets. You can tell me to put it in the vault, there it goes. Never to be released until allowed, “Mum’s the word.” Thankfully the secrets bestowed on me are not locations of buried treasure or criminal facts that would keep the guilty out of prison. That type of information might just might test my character. Most of the secrets are only important to the people who have asked me to keep them. It might be informaBy tion not yet Maura released on a business Lane offering; it might be a change in community personnel; it could be grant money; someone thinking of running for office; the location of a great hairstylist; it could even be an ingredient in a recipe. In this age of sharing, secrets are losing their cache. Now it’s all about posting and engaging. Post that soufflé recipe to Pinterest and put an end to the mystery! Tweet the five best ways to use Powerpoint and improve your presentations. Share the notes from your grant proposal on LinkedIN and let everyone learn from feedback. I think this is terrific. As a community with less sources for information, we need to get our secrets out and

share. It can be a tendency of minority groups to hold these tight but I know that a “rising tide lifts all boats.” The more we grow as a demographic and show our strength, we more we become a force. We need to be opening doors to each other on business opportunities. We need to educate each other on effective communication. We need to know more about our non-profit organizations and how they are structured. The new hairstylist with a flair for taming curly hair needs to lauded and exposed! And if Neiman Marcus can let their cookie recipe out to the world, we can also share your secret culinary delights. As you know Agenda is focused on your stories. We are grateful for the six local couples who shared their big day in the Wedding Issue. We are committed to digging deeper into the Top 100 Movers and Shakers; we’ll pull out their secrets to success. In this issue, we start sharing secret recipes of local restaurants with you, our Agenda audience. We are expanding our content staff with new voices and expertise. If you are blogging, you should be writing for Agenda! If you are on YouTube teaching people to bake, you should be posting to our Facebook page. If you are tweeting on politics, we want to retweet you. Let Agenda be your platform for growth. If you are funny, smart, creative or investigative, please reach out and join our team. Don’t keep your talents a secret. In this day of sharing who wants to keep that quiet? nn

Field Instructor and Clinical Supervisor at Sunserve A Vietnam Vet, Smith retired from the armed services to only devote his second career to his true passion--helping others through psychotherapy. In his early 40s, Smith received his master’s degree and a license in Clinical Social Work and psychotherapy. For the past 11 years, he has used his degree to help counsel our community as a mental health counselor at Sunserve, a South Florida non-profit social service agency. And when the organization needed more help with its graduate internship program five years ago, Smith stepped up and assumed the role as Field Instructor and Clinical Supervisor – training the next generation of clinicians. Besides his volunteer work with Sunserve, Smith has also given his time to the Pride Center as the treasurer of the Senior Advisory Council and then as a member of the board of directors to now become the chair of the Governance Committee for the board. In May of 2016, Smith will retire once again, but Sunserve will still have his warm embrace in the form of an advisor.

Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Stovall and Chief Operating Officer (COO) Deck are working on a new publication to share with the world. LUL (Let Us Live) Magazine is their brainchild for an all-inclusive LGBT publication that represents unity and diversity in an overwhelming lovable way. The dynamic pair is committed to providing our community with a magazine that reinforces individuality, compassion and diversity in a realistic and innovative way. They choose to highlight and celebrate our differences as our own unique attributes that make us one strong everlasting community. They are working tirelessly to bring the publication to light and will not stop until they accomplish their goal. Visit www.LuLmagazine.com to learn more.

The Kiki Project Program Specialist Roundtree has always known that he had much to offer the world so when a friend told him about an opportunity to work with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) in 2013, he quit his job as a UPS worker and began a new life in awareness and advocacy work. Roundtree found his passion working with the community by doing outreach work with AHF. The job was so rewarding that he decided to advance his knowledge and trained to become certified as a HIV tester and counselor. It was a step in the right direction, which brought him to the Pride Center. For the pass two years, Roundtree has been working with the Pride Center on a program called the Kiki Project. The Kiki Project focuses on empowering, educating, inspiring black men who like men 18 years old and up. But work isn’t the only place Roundtree expresses his new found passion. He also leads by example in his everyday life by sharing his smile and continuing to lend his voice to positive causes that help further awareness and change. February 25, 2016

Dr. Mitchell has been empowering our youth since she arrived to Miami from Jamaica in the 1980s. Her philosophy is to allow our youth to flourish by making them part of the equation. Instead of instructing our youth, she includes them in every process from organizing events to business development and management. The Psychology and Philosophy Doctorate collaborated with LGBT youth to organize the first Diverse Minority Pride. And in 2013, they helped her establish the Florida Youth Pride Coalition by creating the name and the logo. Today, the organization functions with an innovative approach to youth mentorship. For every executive board position, there is a youth board position in which they share, collaborate and vote on all aspects of the organization while shadowing their respective executive board mentor.

Martin’s love for the LGBT community is clearly represented in the abundance of advocacy work he has done and continues to do. He has been a core member of the MProject; Broward House’s Men Empowering Men initiative, president of his college’s (Broward College) gay-straight alliance, a member of Planned Parenthood’s Broward County Youth Council, and a HIV counselor and outreach specialist for Minority Development and Empowerment, Inc. The majority of us would like to date or even marry the person of our dreams. You may have an idea of what that person may look like, emotional attributes they possess, as well as how you’d spend your future together. As you progress in your dating journey, you will meet many types of people. Some of these romantic interests will be passionate and intense and may eventually break your heart. Conversely, with others, you will be the heart breaker. Unfortunately, for many, when relationships end, a sense of loneliness By becomes the foundation for James future relationMiller ship choices. After several failed, or devastating heartbreaks, we will often settle for something I call, “Standins.” In other words, a Standin is essentially a warm body we date until we find someone that is closer to who we had originally intended to date. The problem with Stand-ins is we intend to casually date them, but because we want to connect with someone so badly, we surprisingly find ourselves attached to them. There are many times when we can tolerate being single, especially if we are focused at work, with friends or able to channel that energy into something productive. For some, the sense of loneliness or incompleteness may present itself through promiscuity. After the encounter, this drive will be satiated for a time but the loneliness will return. An Ideal Home /floridaagenda

A long time ago, in the very bad old days, Richard Burton and Rex Harrison portrayed a dismally unhappy gay couple in a wretched little movie called Staircase. One problem: their characters were unhappy mostly because they were gay. Well, we’ve come a long way, and now we get to be unhappy for all the same reasons heterosexuals enjoy, which seems to be the plot of An Ideal Home, the new film from queer director Andrew Fleming. The story involves Paul Rudd and Steve Coogan as a married couple whose relationship is on the rocks. The situation is further complicated when Coogan’s surprise grandchild shows up at their door. Wild – and somewhat jaded – guess: the adorable child reminds them what family is really about. Whatever the typical tropes may be, we love Coogan and Rudd and, so, yeah, we’re in.

JT Leroy JT Leroy is back again. First there was a documentary, then another documentary, and now a narrative feature that has attracted the attention of James Franco, Kristen Stewart and Helena Bonham Carter. Who’s JT Leroy, you ask? JT Leroy was actually nobody, a staggeringly far-reaching literary hoax sensation of the early ’00s, one concocted by a female author posing as a teenage literary wunderkind who identified as transgender. Novels were written, literary acclaim followed, public appearances were made by a young woman in a wig and sunglasses, celebrities lined up to sing Leroy’s praises, a few even participated in the lie. And then it all came to a screeching halt when the truth was revealed. Fascinating, right? Justin Kelly, who has already directed Franco, is at the helm of this one. It’s early days yet, but here’s hoping it all comes to pass.

I Love Dick is coming When you’re hot, you’re hot, and Jill Soloway is hot. On the strength of the critical and audience love of Transparent (those awards don’t hurt, either), Amazon has ordered a second pilot from the show’s creator. It’s called I Love Dick, but it’s probably not exactly what you have in mind. The comedy comes from playwright Sarah Gubbins, based on Chris Kraus’ 1997 novel, set in the rural art community of Marfa in Southwest Texas, and the story revolves around an unhappily married couple who become mutually obsessed with a difficult, magnetic professor named Dick. Romeo San Vicente will keep this space free for you to write your own “I Love Dick” joke. He can be reached care of this publication or at DeepInsideHollywood@qsyndicate. com.

n THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA

More than 20 years have passed since Guy Pearce appeared on screen as a larger-thanlife drag queen in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of The Desert. Now, that film’s writer-director, Stephan Elliott, has recruited Pearce for another round of sexual nonconformity. Their upcoming film together, also written and directed by Elliott, is titled Flammable Children, and it co-stars Radha Mitchell. Telling the story of three families on the beaches of Australia in the mid1970s, the comedy explores the sexual revolution of that era and the changes it effects on everyone. If none of that sounds especially Priscilla-esque, then we have two words for you: Lizzy Gardiner. She’s the Academy Award-winning costume designer responsible for the Priscilla outfits. You’ll want to see this movie for her work, if nothing else. Cameras roll early this fall, the beginning of Australia’s summer.
