MEDICAL MIRACLE: HIV-POSITIVE BABY IS CURED

2010, and gave birth prematurely. The mother had not seen a doctor during her pregnancy and was unaware that she was HIV-positive. The hospital transferred the baby, then approximately 30 hours old, to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where Dr. Hannah Gay, an Associate Professor of Pediatrics, ordered two blood tests for the presence of the HIV virus’ RNA and DNA. Although a newborn with an infected mother is usually given one or two drugs as a preventive measure, Dr. Gay ordered a three-drug regimen devised for treatment, not prevention. On Monday, the researchers presented five positive tests (four for viral RNA, and one for DNA) from the baby’s first month of life. The research indicates that once the treatment started, the HIV levels in the child’s blood declined in a pattern that is characteristic of infected patients. With the treatment, virus levels

rapidly declined and were undetectable by the time the newborn was one month old. When the baby was 18 months old, the mother stopped giving the baby drugs. When she examined the child five months later, Dr. Gay tested the baby and the results were negative, although the pediatrician says she expected to see high viral loads in the baby. Dr. Gay contacted researchers, including Dr. Persaud, who were conducting a study sponsored by the Foundation for AIDS Research. They put the baby through a battery of sophisticated tests, and found tiny amounts of viral genetic material, but no virus that is able to replicate. On Monday, Dr. Persaud said there was little doubt that the baby—who is now 2 ½ years old—had experienced a “functional cure.” The child has reportedly been off drugs for a year and shows no signs of a functioning virus.

After the presentation, some experts suggested that the drugs given to the Mississippi baby killed off the virus before it could establish a hidden reservoir. The study findings could result in a new protocol for the immediate testing and treatment of newborns. Transmission of the virus from mother to child is rare in the U.S. (with only about 200 reported cases a year), because infected mothers are typically treated during pregnancy. But women in developing countries are less likely to be treated during pregnancy. And in Africa and other places that lack sophisticated testing, babies born to infected mothers are often not tested until after they are six weeks old. In the past, there have been unproved reported cases of babies clearing the virus, even with no treatment, including one reported in 1995 in The New England Journal of Medicine. But the tests have gotten more sophisticated in the past two decades. Studies are planned to see if early testing and aggressive treatment will now work for other babies. The United Nations estimates that 330,000 babies were newly infected with HIV in 2011, the most recent year for which data is available, and that there are more than three million children globally living with HIV. If further research determines that the Mississippi treatment works in other babies, it will almost certainly be recommended internationally. The bone marrow transplant that cured the Berlin patient, a middleaged man, is a difficult and life-threatening procedure, but the Mississippi treatment is not, and its widespread application could lead to a new standard of care. H

March 6, 2013 H 7

TLANTA, GA — On Sunday, March 3, doctors announced that for the first time in history, a baby had been cured of an HIV infection, a surprising development that could lead to changes in the treatment of infected newborns, and dramatically reduce the number of children living with the virus, which causes AIDS. The doctors, led by researchers from Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, say the baby, who was born in rural Mississippi, was treated aggressively—beginning about 30 hours after birth—with antiretroviral drugs, a procedure that normally does not take place. If the report is confirmed, it would boost international support for research directed at finding a cure for HIV/AIDS, something that was thought to be virtually impossible only a few years ago. Some experts caution that the findings for a baby may not be relevant to adults. The infant (whose name and gender were not disclosed) would be the world’s second well-documented case of a cure for HIV. The first was Timothy Brown, known as the “Berlin patient,” a leukemia patient who received a bone-marrow transplant from a donor who was geneticallyresistant to HIV infection. On Monday, March 4, Dr. Deborah Persaud, Associate Professor at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center and lead author of the report on the child, presented the researchers’ findings— which have not yet been published in a peer-reviewed medical journal—at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Atlanta. According to Dr. Persaud, the child’s mother arrived at a Mississippi hospital already in labor during the fall of

SUNSHINE STATE Trial Begins for Accused Wilton Manors Ponzi Schemer

March 6, 2013 H 8

FORT LAUDERDALE — On Monday, March 4, the trial began for a Fort Lauderdale man charged by federal prosecutors with running a multimillion dollar Ponzi scheme that bilked numerous investors, many of them members of Wilton Manors’ LGBT community. George Elia, 69, is charged with 10 fraud-related counts, including criminal charges of wire fraud, stemming from alleged false claims he made to his investors about his track record as a day-trader and his doctoring of statements to reflect inflated profits. In reality, his trading resulted in marginal gains or losses. Prosecutors say that Elia violated antifraud sections of securities laws, and that he aided and abetted these violations by companies of which he was in charge. He faces a maximum 20 years in prison. Several of Elia’s victims were introduced to the day-trader by Wilton Manors resident Jim Ellis, who pleaded guilty in February to one count of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud. Ellis is expected to testify for the prosecution against his former mentor. As we first reported last spring (Florida Agenda, April 12, 2012, COVER, “Federal Authorities Detail Complaint against Oakland Park man charged in $11 Million Ponzi Scheme: ‘Rainmaker’ alleged to have Bilked Million$ from Wilton Manors Residents”), many of the alleged victims of Elia—who was arrested on March 27, 2012 in Las Vegas—are

gay retirees living in Wilton Manors. Last month, Assistant U.S. Attorney H. Ron Davison filed a motion asking the court to prohibit Elia’s attorneys from preemptively excluding gay jurors from deciding his case. In his motion, Davison argued that, “George Elia was an equal opportunity con man,” and that the sexual identity of prospective jurors should have no bearing upon their ability to render an unbiased verdict. “Sexual orientation should be treated like race, gender, and ethnicity for purposes” of jury selection, Davison wrote.

Miami-Dade County Selected as Host for 2017 World Outgames MIAMI BEACH — On Thursday, February 28, the Gay and Lesbian International Sports Association (GLISA) announced that Miami Beach and Miami have been selected to host the World Outgames in 2017. GLISA President Daniel Vaudrin made the announcement during the selection ceremony in Antwerp, Belgium, the site of the 2013 World Outgames, which will take place this summer. The 2017 selection of Miami-Dade County marks the first time that the event will be held in the U.S. “This is a major leap forward for our community,” said Bruce Townsend, co-chair of the Miami Beach-Miami Sports and Cultural League, the 13-member volunteer coalition that entered the bid on behalf of the cities.

Ellis, Elia

“We are ecstatic about being able to showcase Miami Beach and Miami on this world stage.” Included in the Miami Beach-Miami bid were proposals to host a human rights conference, a diverse cultural program, a World Outgames Village, opening and closing ceremonies, and 30 sporting events. The World Outgames, which lasts for 10 days, takes place every four years in a different city. Miami Beach will be the headlining city, but events will be held throughout Miami-Dade, including proposed venues at Lummus Park, Flamingo Park, Tamiami Park, the University of Miami, the Ransom Everglades School Aquatic Center and the Miami Beach Convention Center. Previous host cities for the Outgames include Montreal and Copenhagen. “The games are an amazing opportunity to showcase our community on a world stage, and we are looking forward to welcoming tens of thousands of athletes and human rights advocates to our hometown,” said Richard Murray, President of the Murray Agency and a member of the Miami Beach-Miami Sports & Cultural League.

12 Charged with Manslaughter in Gay FAMU Student Hazing Death ORLANDO — A dozen former members of the Florida A&M University marching band were charged on March 4 with manslaughter in the 2011 hazing death of Robert Champion, an openly-gay FAMU student and drum major. Although 10 of the defendants were charged in 2012 with thirddegree felony hazing in the death of Champion, 26, prosecutors added the second-degree manslaughter charge—which carries a penalty of up to 15 years in prison—for each defendant, including two who have not yet been arrested. As we first reported last year (Florida Agenda, January 19, 2012, SUNSHINE STATE, “Parents of Gay

FAMU Student Sue School and Charter Company for Hazing Death”), Champion died in November 2011 after a savage beating that authorities say took place in a chartered school bus. Investigators say that Champion, who was unresponsive when emergency workers arrived on the scene, had bruising on his arms, back, chest, and shoulder, and that he died of internal bleeding. Judge Marc Lubet set a status hearing for August, saying that a June trial date was unlikey due to the large number of witnesses who are expected to testify.

New York Grilled Cheese Company Holds PreOpening Focus Group WILTON MANORS — The owners of the soon-to-open New York Grilled Cheese Co. held a focus group last week, to introduce a small group of community members to the restaurant’s forthcoming gourmet menu. Co-owner Leor Barak, who, with his father, also owns Nuts About Yogurt on Wilton Drive, said that most of the menu items were sampled by about a dozen focus group members, who included Wilton Manors Development Alliance CEO Krishan Manners and South Florida drag performer Misty Eyez. They were treated to the gourmet cheeses, thick cut breads, and other unique ingredients which will make up the specialized menu of seven sandwiches and other items, including bacon lollipops and frozen mimosa and sangria drinks. “We are going to serve sandwiches, side items, specialty drinks, and gourmet coffees that have never before been sampled around here,” said Barak, who says that the sandwiches will be baked in a special waffle-baker, and will include delicious signature ingredients. “Our gourmet garlic butter is made in-house, with a proprietary recipe that will knock your socks off,” Barak added. “Everything on the menu will be under $10, and served with a side of soup. We love the Drive, and want to bring something trendy and unique that will keep people coming back.”H

212 Democrat Members of Congress File Brief in Supreme Court DOMA Case WASHINGTON, DC — On March 1, 212 Members of Congress— Democrats all—filed a Friend of the Court brief in the case of U.S. v. Edith Schlain Windsor, the landmark challenge to Section 3 of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which is begin heard by the U.S. Supreme Court later this month. The case concerns Edith Windsor, whom the federal government taxed more than $363,000 when her spouse, Thea Spyer, died in 2009. The couple married in 2007 after an engagement that lasted more than 40 years. Windsor, 83, challenged DOMA, and a federal district court and the Second Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in her favor, holding that DOMA violates the Fifth Amendment’s equal protection guarantee. Section 3 of DOMA defines marriage, for purposes of federal law, as “only a legal union between one man and one woman,” excluding same-sex couples from all marriage-based federal responsibilities and rights. A total of 172 Members of the House and 40 Members of the Senate signed onto the brief, which urges the Supreme Court to uphold the Second Circuit’s decision. It includes signatures from some Members who voted

in favor of DOMA, but now consider it to be unconstitutional. According to the brief, “The goal of maximizing the financial well-being and independence of widows is not furthered by depriving Edie Windsor and others like her of the estate-tax exemption that other married Americans receive. The policy of encouraging employers to provide family health benefits is not served either by denying to employers the tax deduction for providing those benefits to married gay and lesbian couples or by refusing to cover spouses of gay and lesbian federal employees.” It continued, “Our national security is undermined by denying spousal benefits to gay and lesbian servicemembers, especially during periods of armed conflict. Our veterans are dishonored when we deny them the right to have their spouses buried alongside them in our national cemeteries.”

NFL Players File Brief in Supreme Court Prop 8 Challenge MINNEAPOLIS, MN —Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe and Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo—two outspoken advocates for LGBT rights—filed a brief last week in the challenge to California’s Proposition 8 measure, urging the justices to rule on the side of marriage equality. “This is a very big decision that the

Supreme Court is going to make on the future of gay rights in this country,” Kluwe said during an interview on WCCO (Minneapolis). “Brendon [Ayanbadejo] felt the same way—that as athletes, we have a fairly unique voice in society,” he added. “It’s something that we can make a difference for people.” Appearing on CBS Sports Radio on February 28, Ayanbadejo predicted that an openly-gay professional football player is a thing of the near future. “I just think that there [are] obviously gay players in the NFL, if you just look at the demographics and the percentage of gay people in society and plug those numbers in the NFL,” Ayanbadejo offered. “There [are] gay players and we’ve played with gay players and you’ve seen gay players come out post career and whatnot. So we’re just slowly progressing every day, every month, every year to players being comfortable to be themselves. If they can be themselves they can be better players they can have longer careers.” He added that “it’s just inevitable that at some point we’re going to see a player come out and that’s why we’re fighting so hard to have equal rights so they’ll be able to come out and be themselves.” California is one of eight states that provide gay couples all the benefits of marriage through civil unions or domestic partnership, but don’t permit actual gay marriage. The Friend of the Court brief filed by Ayanbadejo and Kluwe argues that by granting samesex couples those rights, California has already acknowledged that samesex relationships bear the same hallmarks as heterosexual ones.

Cameron Monaghan, who plays Ian—a closeted teen who is having a secret affair with his married, middle-aged boss— tweeted “This is the only time I will answer this here: No, I’m not gay. campaign in support of marriage equality. The Respect for Marriage Coalition has included Bush among clips that include prominent national Republicans speaking in support of same-sex marriage. Officials with the organization—which is led by members of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and Freedom to Marry—say they have no plans to remove the wife of former President George W. Bush from among the images, which also include former Vice President Dick Cheney and former Secretary of State Colin Powell. In the ad in question, the former First Lady tells CNN host Larry King that, “When couples are committed, they ought to have the same sort of rights that everyone has,” comments she made during a 2010 interview. In that same interview, Bush explained her difference of opinion with her husband concerning gay marriage. “I understand totally what George thinks and what other people think about marriage being between a man and a woman,” she acknowledged, but told host King— in response to his question about the future of same-sex marriage, “It will come, I think."

s we reported last week in these pages, the court brief to the U.S. Supreme Court signed last week by dozens of prominent national Republicans in support of same-sex marriage could represent a political paradigm-shift that may have its roots in the life and politics of Barry Goldwater, the father of the modern conservative era. A fierce proponent of traditionalist values (he was called “Mr. Conservative”), Goldwater is the politician credited with sparking the resurgence of the American conservative political movement during the 1960s, and likewise left his mark on American libertarianism. A businessman and later U.S Senator from Arizona, Goldwater rejected the legacy of the New Deal of the 1930s and fought through the conservative coalition to defeat what he saw as Big Government liberalism run amok. In 1964, after a gruesome and contentious presidential campaign (which gave birth to the modern negative political ad, among other charming election traditions), Goldwater, the Republican nominee, largely abandoned the national political stage to his ideological heir, Ronald Reagan, who used the vacuum in conservative leadership to fuel his own political career and election as Governor of California in 1966. Later in his career, Goldwater became a political elder statesman and greybeard of the GOP, famously calling upon the resignation of Richard Nixon in the dark days of Watergate. But by the 1980s, Goldwater had become disenchanted with the increasingly vocal presence of the burgeoning Religious Right, and its ultimate seizure of the Republican’s political agenda, which had once been centered on small government and fiscal conservatism. In 1989, two years after his retirement from the Senate, Goldwater opined that the Republican party had been taken over by a “bunch of kooks.” In 1994, he told the Washington Post, “When you say ‘radical right’ today, I think of these moneymaking ventures by fellows like Pat Robertson and others who are trying

to take the Republican Party and make a religious organization out of it. If that ever happens, kiss politics goodbye.” In response to Moral Majority founder Jerry Falwell opposed the nomination of Sandra Day O’Connor to the Supreme Court, telling supporters that, “Every good Christian should be concerned,” Goldwater shot back, “Every good Christian ought to kick Falwell right in the ass.” During the “family values” hysteria of the 1988 presidential campaign, Goldwater told vice-presidential nominee Dan Quayle that the candidates needed to stay focused on policy, not placating the Religious Right. “I want you to go back and tell [presidential candidate] George [H.W.] Bush to start talking about the issues,” he lectured Quayle. During the 1990s, Goldwater alienated many social conservatives, endorsing a Democrat during a tough Arizona congressional race, and advising Republicans to lay off Bill Clinton during the Whitewater scandal. On the LGBT rights front, Goldwater—a retired Major General in the United States Air Force Reserves—was highly critical of the Pentagon ban on openly-gay service members. “Everyone knows that gays have served honorably in the military since at least the time of Julius Caesar,” Goldwater noted, expressing both humanity and common sense. He also famously said that, “You don't need to be ‘straight’ to fight and die for your country. You just need to shoot straight.” The crowning and irreparable break between Goldwater and the far right occurred just a few years before his death, when he told establishment Republicans, “Do not associate my name with anything you do. You are extremists, and you've hurt the Republican Party much more than the Democrats have.” In 1996, two years before his death he told Republican Presidential Candidate Bob Dole, whose campaign had received only the barest support from the conservative wing of the GOP (with only the smallest amount of irony), “We’re the new ‘liberals’ of the Republican Party. Can you imagine that?”

After his 1964 election defeat (losing to incumbent Lyndon Johnson by one of the largest landslide defeats in history) Goldwater became less important to the American conservative movement, with Ronald Reagan taking a much larger hand in shaping and defining the movement from the mid-1950s through his own election as President in 1980. Goldwater’s defeat in ’64 took a lot of other national Republicans with him, but it served to clean house of the Old Guard of moderate establishment Republicans and make room for the new breed of conservative politicians who rode in on Reagan’s coattails (many of whom are still stinking up the place in DC decades later; can you say “John McCain?”). After Reagan 1980 win, syndicated columnist George Will said that it had taken 16 years to count the votes from 1964, and that Barry Goldwater had won. Last month, former Utah governor and GOP presidential hopeful Jon Huntsman, Jr. wrote in an editorial published in The American Conservative that, “There is nothing conservative about denying other Americans the ability to forge a marriage with the person they love. All Americans should be treated equally by the law.” Huntsman—a former U.S. ambassador under both Republican and Democrat presidents—could very well be the face of modern American conservatism (let’s call it “Post-NeoConservatism”), calling as he did upon the political right “to take a hard look at what today’s conservatism stands for,” and urging support for marriage equality as “the right thing to do.” Sounding a tone very much invoking Goldwater, Huntsman caution the GOP, “The American people will not hear us out if we stand against their friends, family, and individual liberty,” adding that “The party of Lincoln should stand with our best tradition of equality and support full civil marriage for all Americans.” If they do, it would be a second victory for Barry Goldwater, the Man Who Was Never President.H

Q-POINT

BY DEAN TRANTALIS

W

hen it comes to community involvement, I’ve experienced my share over the years. Our early marches were based on a simple message of equality. We didn’t want to be fired from our jobs or not allowed to eat in a restaurant because we were gay. We often found ourselves adapting to the look and speak of the conventional world just to fit in, not to be noticed. Imagine that, Ru Paul.

It took many marches, parades, demonstrations, firings, evictions, lawsuits, and the untiring efforts of countless supporters to help change the image of our community and to provide it with the dignity which it has since come to enjoy. Some say it took the ravages of AIDS to wake our community up, to acknowledge and adapt to its new political imper-

ative in order to ensure its survival. Others might just thank “Will and Grace” for letting people understand that gay life is like every other sitcom, except that we are more inclined to stretch the boundaries of everyday life. The measure of our success is nothing less than full equality, and we are far from it. Just because a same-sex couple can walk down Wilton Drive holding hands doesn’t mean those same two persons can canoodle a mile away on Galt Ocean Drive. It’s great that we have ordinances in place that legally protect us from certain types of discrimination, but discrimination is an insidious menace that permeates the very bones of our ordered society, and is often undetectable. A supporter on whose lawn in Victoria Park I had placed a campaign sign woke up one morning to find the sign missing. Not knowing that the supporter had video cameras, he waltzed to the front

door of his next door neighbor and on his iPad replayed the video to her, revealing her ‘caper’. Her response was simply, “I don’t want gay stuff near my lawn.” Did I mention this was in Victoria Park, once the bastion of gaydom? Yet as I go door-to-door and appeal to our community’s numbers to support campaigns that will advance the LGBT cause, I’m often greeted by those famous sisters, Apathy and Complacency. There they are: hair in curlers and soft bunny flip-flops warming their toes. They are all happy and content in their world. But outside the bubble of content in which many people see themselves living, is a world simmering with distrust and distaste for who we are. I for one continue to push our agenda to ensure that we someday achieve full equality. It happens in steps: first by asking, then by urging, and ultimately by seeking a seat on the dais in order to let it

always be known that we are an important part of society. My fiercest opponent is not the other candidate. No, it’s those twisted sisters, Apathy and Complacency, who think that we don’t need one of our own at the table because are friends will take care of us. Yeah, right. If everyone who is eligible to vote did vote, we would never have to rely on the kindness of strangers. Otherwise, we will find out the hard way, that if we don’t have a seat at the table, we will more than likely be served on the menu. only challenging the constitutionality of the part of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) that defines marriage as the union of a man and a woman for federal purposes. (A second part of the 1996 law, which says that states are not required to recognize same-sex marriages contracted elsewhere, is not before the high court.) In Windsor, the Supreme Court’s ruling will at best decide whether the federal government can discriminate against same-sex couples, even if they were married in the nine states or the District of Columbia, where such unions are permitted. The Hollingsworth case, which challenges California’s voter-approved Proposition 8, offers the broader question of whether a constitutional right to same-sex marriage exists even in states that don’t allow it. Like the arguments made by a

prominent group of national Republicans last week, the government’s brief argues any law attempting to prohibit marriage equality must be subjected to heightened scrutiny, because it singles out a class of Americans who have historically been subjected to discrimination, for unequal treatment under the law. The administration’s brief argues that the factors that led earlier courts to require heightened scrutiny for laws regarding gender and illegitimacy should also require it for ones that address sexual orientation. Although it isn’t certain how the Supremes will rule on that question— they could decide that their ruling only applies to California, or avoid the matter on technical grounds—the administration’s brief is significant since until recently it was believed they would stay out of the Prop 8

fight, in part owing to the President’s public stance on gay marriage. Last year, Obama told ABC News, “I continue to believe that this is an issue that is going to be worked out at the local level, because historically, this has not been a federal issue, what’s recognized as a marriage.” On the other hand, the President has consistently opposed Proposition 8, going back to his 2008 candidacy. The Hollingsworth case is scheduled to be argued before the Supreme Court on March 26, with the Windsor case scheduled for the following day. The administration’s lawyer—most likely the Solicitor General—is sure to be questioned closely (especially from Scalia, but just as likely from the “liberal” wing of the court) about inconsistencies in their positions. ast week, the Obama administration announced that it was throwing its not inconsiderable weight behind efforts to convince the U.S. Supreme Court to rule that California voters were not entitled to ban gay marriage there. Although the federal government is not a party to the case (Hollingsworth v. Perry), nor was it required to take a position in it, the high-profile attorneys (they had their own HBO movie, for crying out loud) who filed the challenge, Theodore Olson and David Boies, and gay rights groups, worked tirelessly to convince the administration that it had a moral duty to speak out in favor of their brief. The feds previously filed a brief in the marriage equality case in which it is a party (U.S. v. Windsor); but in that case, marriage equality supporters are

“PROUD” TO BE FUNNY: AN INTERVIEW WITH 2013 PRIDEFEST GAY COMEDIAN JASON STUART

J

Q & A

By GREGG SHAPIRO

ason Stuart has been funny for a very long time. He’s also been making people laugh for 30 years as a professional stand-up comedian. Breaking ground in nightclubs, on TV, and in movies, Stuart continues to ply his trade in comedy, too. A selfdescribed “generic gay guy...who happens to be an actor and a comedian,” Stuart likes to mingle and meet people, so be sure to say hello to him when you see him this weekend in the run-up to 2013 Pridefest (but wait until he finishes his act). Stuart and fellow ‘out’ comic Jessica Kirson will perform on Friday, March 8 at Pride Comedy Night. For more information, visit pridesouthflorida.org.)

March 6, 2013 H 12

What would you say was the single most significant event of your comedy career? I have to say that in the last year or two, I've re-fallen in love with doing standup in the sense that I talk more to the audience, say whatever I want. I don't worry about getting on television or trying to fit into some sort of idea of the way that I should be. People always say to me, “Is your act about being gay?" I say, "My act is about being me. Part of being me is being gay." They asked me if I ever want to stop talking about being gay. I say, “When people stop laughing about things, then I'll stop talking about it.” I don't really think about whether it’s gay or straight. As long as it's funny, I'm going to talk about it. For years I've been saying I think I'm a funny person. My job as a comedian is to set it up so the audience understands what I think is funny. That's what's fun about doing it. Do you think that as a gay comedian, the equation Tragedy + Time = Comedy has worked for you and can you give me an example of how you apply it? When that terrible storm happened on the East Coast, Hurricane Sandy, I heard them say that the Jersey shore was gone. The first thing that I thought about was

true that gay people invented blow jobs. I said, "We didn't invent them, but we did perfect them.” You talk about your mother, Kathy Griffin talks about her mother, Margaret Cho talks about her mother— I've been talking about my mother longer than both of them. I've never not talked about my mother. I have to. She's going to be 76, she wears cha-cha heels and plastic earrings. That’s my mom. Do you think you’d make a better Oscar host than Seth McFarlane? Oh, God, please, just to be invited! To host? Just to get nominated for Best Supporting Actor before I'm dead. You want to make me cry right here? My fantasy is to do a cool supporting role in an independent film, and not win. Then spend the next five years playing the same part in big studio movies, getting paid tons of money, and then five years later I do another independent film, get nominated for an Oscar and win it. Then go do television in a supporting role on some medical show where I play the head nurse [laughs].

that crazy television show (“Jersey Shore”). I thought to myself, “Well, where are all those people? If the Jersey shore is gone there is probably a bunch of drunk, orange people wandering around Manhattan." That's the way my mind works. My mother and I went to see (the Barbra Streisand/Seth Rogen movie) “The Guilt Trip.” My mother says to me, "Am I like that?" I said, "No, Mom, of course not. You're worse" [laughs]. Have you been working up any material on the Pope’s resignation? I love the Pope! He has a great dress and a fabulous hat. When I was a kid, the Pope

said that all the gay people were going to hell. I thought to myself, "If all the gay people are going to hell, where else would I want to go? What am I going to do, go to heaven with all those straight people wearing white after Labor Day?" I don't care, I'm going to hell. I'm going where a Speedo because I hear it's hot. What are your other favorite topics? It’s always about my mother. For example, I'm dating this new guy and I call my mother to tell her. She says, "Is he gay?” I said, "No, he's a leprechaun! Of course he's gay. I came out 25 years ago!" She says, "Oh, I forgot." She asked me if it's

You have branched out into acting roles on television and in movies. I have six movies coming out in the next year. James Franco wrote and produced one, called “Holy Land,” where I play a hoarder. I did a movie with Sally Kirkland called “Posey,” where I play the manager of [a] rehab center. I also did a movie with Adrian Grenier called “Goodbye World.” You are performing on March 8 as part of the Pridefest official activities, along with Jessica Kirson. I love her. We've worked together a couple of times. She's hysterically funny, she's wonderful, she's sweet. It's nice to work with talented people. I love the idea of a gay man and a gay woman doing a show together. People can expect laugh out loud comedy from two outrageous comedians.H

TRULY AWESOME ARMS, PART 2: BUILDING BEAUTIFUL BICEPS

By TOM BONANTI

L

ast time, we began a discussion about making a commitment to building an amazing set of biceps. For maintenance, work biceps once a week for 20 minutes or so using an array of arm curls. To increase size and perfect your shape, work them two to three times a week for the same amount of time. Make sure to give your biceps 48 to 72 hours rest between workouts. This gives broken down muscle fibers a chance to recover, and grow thicker and denser. When performing your reps, never jerk or swing the weight because the biceps can tear easier than any other muscle when your form is clumsy. I combine biceps with chest, shoulders, or even legs, but never with back because any decent back routine is going to tax biceps, thus preventing you from really giving them your all. Here are four of my favorite

exercises for building beautiful biceps. Do three sets of eight to twelve reps of each exercise, and make sure to stretch between exercises and sets. 1. Cable Curls: These are a nice alternative to barbells and dumbbells. Attach a straight bar to the lower cable assembly and grasp the bar with a medium-width, underhanded grip. Stand upright with the arms straight and the bar resting in front of the thighs. Keep your upper arms tight at your sides, bend the elbows and curl the bar up to the chin level. Pause briefly, squeeze the contraction, and lower the bar back down slowly to starting position. 2. Standing Dumbbell Curls: Here’s a way to isolate each bicep. Stand upright, holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides in a palms-in grip. Keep the upper arms motionless as you bend the elbows and curl the weights

upward, turning the hands so that the wrists face the shoulders at the top. Pause, squeeze and lower back down twisting to the palms-in position. 3. EZ Curls: Standing with knees slightly bent, grip an EZ curl bar (this bar is made explicitly for biceps training, it is bent in the middle to facilitate your grip) with palms facing up, shoulder-width apart. Curl the bar by flexing your arms at the elbow. Your elbows should remain close to your sides. Lower the weight in a controlled manner to starting position. Remember to hold a powerful contraction at the top and slowly lower the weight down on the negative. 4. Incline Dumbbell Curls: Sit on a bench at a 45-degree incline. Keep your back straight, feet flat on the floor, and arms at your side. Curl the dumbbell by flexing arms toward the shoulders. (You can do

single alternating arms, as well.) Slowly lower dumbbells in a controlled motion until your arm is extended. Make sure especially when you do dumbbell curls that you do not swing the weights too much. Remember to keep proper form and execute each rep in a controlled and calculated manner. Good luck with your workouts. Be consistent and patient, and don’t be afraid to push yourself. Contact me at trainertomb@aol.com with questions anytime, and check out my website at pumpnincgym.com.H

IBIZA II Dance the Night Away By ROBERT ELIAS DEATON

I

March 6, 2013 H 24

biza is famous for its parties and nightlife and drinking into the wee hours of the morning. That reputation is not unfounded. While the beaches are full of white sand and naked bodies during the sun-filled days, it is after sundown that the Spanish island some 50 miles off the coast of Valencia shines brightest. There are seven major clubs on Ibiza, scattered around the Island, but all are within a 45-minute drive from Ibiza Town. Of the lot, the most famous is also the oldest and the closest—Pacha, famous for its fireworks (literally!) and its cherries that not only make up half of its logo but also are a featured addition to every drink. Created in 1973, this little old finca has grown into the most dominant clubbing brand in the world, with the Ibiza venue still very much the driving force and jewel in the crown. With a reputation for providing clubbing with style, it is unrivalled when it comes to adding some VIP pizzazz to proceedings. This playground for the rich and famous regularly features mega-star DJs like Guetta and Erick Morillo. Expect to pay 10 euros for a cab ride from Ibiza Town, €15 from neighboring Playa d'en Bossa, and €20-25 from San Antonio on the other side of the

island. Pacha is also reachable from Ibiza Town on foot, in a nice 10-15 minute stroll from the center of the village to the club’s front door. For 100 euros, gain entrance to a VIP table and feel like a prince (or even a queen). If electronic dance music is your thing, think Space Ibiza in Playa D’en Bossa. Owned by Ibicenco Pepe Rosello, Space Ibiza is one of the few clubs that offers daytime clubbing as well as nighttime excesses. Now a sprawling and modern discoteca, with five different areas, Space is Ibiza power-clubbing at its finest, with a particular emphasis on the best international DJs across all genres. Sundays at Space are particularly popular (with a cover charge to match), with its opening (May) and closing (September) parties for the season the best attended of any events. Expect to pay from 20-40 euros for parties at Space. Your ticket usually entitles you to one free drink. Drinks are priced at the Ibiza norm, with a Vodka Lemon costing 12 euros and a beer 8 euros. It’s expensive to play this well. The world’s biggest club is in Ibiza and is known as Privilege. With a Main Room like an aircraft hangar, Privilege is so large that the club could fit the whole of most of the other clubs in Ibiza inside it. Renowned for hosting spectacular and grandiose parties, Privilege provides layer after layer of club space to explore, as well as a swimming pool at its center. For a totally different nightclub experience, attend one of Privilege’s sex shows, which have to be seen to be believed. Yes, it’s real sex. Home of Manumission, an annual event/party that constantly strives to outdo itself, year after year. Free

buses will get you to Privilege from Ibiza Town, San Antonio, or Playa D’en Bossa, or it’s a 10-15 euro cab ride from any of these places to the club. A not-to-be-missed event any night of the week. Other clubs on Ibiza include Amnesia, located in the middle of the island near San Rafael; DC10, near the airport on the road to Las Salinas; plus Eden and Es Paradis, located on the waterfront in San Antonio. T

he assortment of smoothies offered at JuiceBlendz is characteristically superb. This franchise chain was an early leader in highprotein, all-natural drinks for increased energy and muscle building. Of the Healthy Choice Blendz, for those looking to maximize your gym workouts and training sessions, order up the Isoplex Low Carb Smoothie ($6.25), which is actually a complete meal replacement in a 24-ounce cup, featuring Isoplex (a supreme form of Whey Protein that delivers time-released ingredients to prevent muscle atrophy and add metabolism support), skim milk and two fruits of your choice (our suggestion is banana for potassium and strawberries for antioxidants). But JuiceBlendz is far more than just drinks. The company has a complete range of eats, as well, including some excellent choices for a fast breakfast treat. Bagels are in the center ring, providing the foundation from which to build a sandwich for $3.75. The JB Garden Bagel is the healthy food choice, serving up spinach, tomato, cream cheese, and melted Provolone cheese on a wheat bagel that is toasted to perfection. For those carnivores, the JB Ham Bagel adds deli ham to the mix, while a JB Plain Bagel with cream cheese charts in at a reasonable $1.99. For lunch and dinner, wraps reign supreme at JuiceBlendz, made fresh using spinach, tomato and whole wheat (the choice is yours). Our favorite of the group is the Asian Blendz Wrap ($6.25) featuring sliced chicken breast that is incredibly moist, charmed with the crispiest of fresh romaine lettuce, sliced carrots, toasted sesame seeds for added crunch, and JB peanut sauce that provides a savory zest. The Sensational Caesar Wrap ($6.50) truly lives up to its billing, stuffed full of

sliced chicken breast, Romano dressing, and fresh grated Parmesan cheese. JuiceBlendz also produces some excellent sandwiches made all the more special by its freshly baked Italian Ciabatta. The bread shines with its crisp crust and dense interior sandwiching the JB Ultimate ($6.95). The surprise here is the amount of deli ham, Ovengold turkey breast, and super-lean roast beef layered with Provolone cheese and JB sauce, a tangy sweet taste unique to JuiceBlendz. For a totally different meal, try the hot and toasted JB Albacore Melt ($6.75), which combines spinach with light mayonnaise and Provolone cheese. Ask for it “extra toasty,” and experience the diverse flavors at full bloom. The franchise also rocks with its French Baguette roll featured in the JB Turkey Club ($6.75), combining Ovengold sliced turkey breast, sliced tomatoes, crisp bacon, melted Provolone cheese, and JB’s secret spread in another hot sandwich that’s a hearty as it is delicious. The JB Ravin’ Roast Beef ($6.95) packs on the Provolone (once again melted) with cream cheese in a refreshing hot-and-cold taste counterbalance topped with warm au jus. For those who need just a little extra to fill out their meal, JuiceBlendz adds 99-cent side portions of ThreePotato Salad, Rotelli Pasta Salad, or a spicy Salsa Raviolini—all of which are small in size but huge in flavor. JuiceBlendz features a Daily Specials menu that allows you to mix and match without breaking the pocketbook. Order any wrap with a side and a bottled drink for $4.99. A wrap with a 16-ounce smoothie tallies up $6.99. But splurge on a 24-ounce smoothie, and tell them Florida Agenda sent you.H

RECIPE

MUSHROOMS PROVENCE By CHEF JEAN DOHERTY

T

he Pharaohs of ancient Egypt ate mushrooms as a delicacy, while the Greeks believed them to be a source of strength, and the Chinese regarded them as health food. Mushrooms are eaten for their flavor and texture, as well as for their health benefits. They are rich in mineral content and their fat or “lipid content” is very low, so mushrooms are a low-calorie food, appropriate for lowcalorie dieting (usually cooked raw or with oil to provide a healthy and light starter or side dish). Here’s a starter that’s easy and delicious.

March 6, 2013 H 28

Ingredients • 1 lb small button of mushrooms • 1 bunch of spring onions • Juice of two lemons • 1 clove of garlic, cored and crushed • 1 handful of golden raisins, soaked for an hour • Fresh thyme • Fresh rosemary • 1 glass of white wine • 1 tsp of cracked pepper • Salt and pepper • Olive oil Trim and wash the mushrooms thoroughly. In a thick pot, heat up two tablespoons of

olive oil and cook the mushrooms for about three minutes, or until all the cooking juices have evaporated. In a separate sauce pan, pour the wine, one tablespoon of water, half of the lemon juice, three tablespoons of olive oil, the cracked pepper, the herbs, the finely chopped garlic, raisins, and white onions. Season with some salt and bring to a boil. Cook for about 15 minutes and then add the mushrooms.Turn the heat up and cook until the liquid reduces by ¾ of its starting volume. When done, pour the cooked mushrooms into a bowl and allow them to cool down before refrigerating. Just before serving your mushrooms, add the leftover lemon juice and give ’em a good stir. This recipe makes a great, refreshing appetizer on a hot sunny day—but serve it whenever you like:You are the chef!H Although born in Dublin, Ireland, Chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.

Mid-Century Meets California Contemporary in New Wilton Manors Home Makeover

S

outh Florida property developer Jay Fertig and real estate broker Gary Lanham are preparing to unveil a new joint project: the complete makeover of a single-family residence on one of Wilton Manors’ most desirable neighborhoods. In the greater Fort Lauderdale area, few communities are more sought after, and with real estate values rising, prime properties will be increasingly harder to find. Look no further than this stunning home. When completed, the waterfront lot on the South Fork of Middle River will showcase an exquisitely updated house, surrounded by custom-designed landscaping, garden rooms, new pool and spacious indoor and outdoor living areas. Located at 1911 NW 3rd. Ave., the property is perfectly situated on a cul-de-sac. Fertig called on two award-winning California architects to bring this 1961 Florida bungalow into the 21st century. Custom gardens will surround the house, creating private pockets of paradise accessible from master and guest suites, as well as main living area.

The Vision

March 6, 2013 H 34

Developer Jay Fertig, president of Bayshore Land Group, is the visionary of this project, which he anticipates will be the first of several single-family home ventures in this area. He invites you to watch its transformation from cookie-cutter 1961 cottage to a spacious contemporary dwelling surrounded by tropical garden rooms, private patios, pool and much more. “We are fast-tracking this house and expect to finish by

The City Wilton Manors, a city just north of Fort Lauderdale, enjoys cultural and demographic diversity. Based on the 2010 U.S. census, it’s the second gayest city in the country, according to the Williams Institute, a UCLA Law School think tank. Buyers who were priced out during the run up to 2008 now see opportunity, as evidenced by business development, appreciating home values and increasingly affluent residents. “Also noteworthy, the recent change in Florida law to allow adoption by GLBT and same-sex couples makes Wilton Manors even more desirable for families,” notes Lanham. “Wilton Manors Elementary is a highly rated Magnet school. It is where parents want to send their kids to school, and this further enhances the appeal of this neighborhood.”

The House While much of the original exterior structure will not change, under the new roof everything has been updated. Like new construction, this home meets all current building codes. Here are a few of the major improvements: • Reposition entry to create unimpeded view to water’s edge in rear. • Reposition interior walls to expand living spaces, enlarge master suite, add walk-in closets, update bath with wallhung floating cabinet and dual sinks. • Reconfigure guest quarters with en suite bath and French doors to private lanai with garden and water views. • Add asymmetrical lap pool and new landscaping.

mid-to-late April” says Fertig. Gary Lanham, President of Lanham & Associates of Oakland Park, will handle marketing of the property. “This is a rare opportunity to get a home in west Wilton Manors at precisely the right time—we are seeing prices begin to rise and the value buyer is ready to jump back in.” Fertig and Lanham share a mission to offer opportunity and value for their clients. “We want to build truly contemporary, and affordable, homes that will meet the discriminating and demanding criteria of the predominantly gay buyers who want to live in Wilton Manors,” says Lanham. “In addition to single professionals and retirees who are year-round residents, we see growing interest from people in the northeast who want to invest in a second home.”

“Our concept is to create a private, garden-like setting for the house, grounds and pool,” says Fertig. “We achieve this with a walled enclosure in the front which will expand outdoor living spaces that are private. We’ll use wood to blend with the landscape, and the gate will be translucent glass to add architectural interest and contemporary flair. A shade trellis will lead to the entry, further enhancing the garden ambiance.” “When Jay’s redesign is completed, this house will be the star of the neighborhood,” says Lanham. Early buyers may have input on finishes. Interested parties should contact Gary Lanham at www.LanhamAssociates.com for additional information or to schedule a viewing.
